Nitish Kumar files nomination for RS polls, triggers major political shift in Bihar

BJP National President Nitin Nabin, BJP leader Shivesh Kumar, Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) President Upendra Kushwaha, and JD(U) leader Ramnath Thakur, son of Karpoori Thakur, submitted their nominations to the election commission.

Imran Mojib | Patna |

Amid political upheavals in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections on Thursday. Along with him, four other candidates of the ruling alliance filed their nominations.

BJP National President Nitin Nabin, BJP leader Shivesh Kumar, Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) President Upendra Kushwaha, and JD(U) leader Ramnath Thakur, son of Karpoori Thakur, submitted their nominations to the election commission.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several senior leaders of the alliance were present on the occasion.

Nitish Kumar’s decision to move to the Rajya Sabha has created a major stir in Bihar’s politics. Earlier, there was speculation that his son Nishant might be nominated for the seat. However, as he has often done in the past, Kumar surprised both party members and the people of Bihar by announcing that he himself would go to the Rajya Sabha.

Speaking to the media after the nominations were filed, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said Nitish Kumar’s tenure as Chief Minister would be written in golden letters in Bihar’s history. “During his tenure, Nitish Kumar freed the state from ‘jungle raj’ and built an extensive network of roads. Under his leadership, the state witnessed many important schemes and development projects. The people of Bihar will remember Nitish Kumar’s contributions for a long time,” he said.

He also recalled that Nitish Kumar was among the prominent leaders associated with the JP Movement of 1974, and since then he has tried to follow the principles of Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan. He said Nitish Kumar has always upheld simplicity, integrity, and high values in public life. “Nitish Kumar’s tenure has always been spotless, and the work he has done as Chief Minister will always be remembered and respected by the people of Bihar. With his entry into the Rajya Sabha, a new direction may be seen in Bihar’s politics,” he said.

Congratulating Nitin Nabin, the Union home minister said he and BJP workers welcome Nitin Nabin to Parliament. After a long and successful political career in the state, he will now make an important contribution in the House as well.

Nitin Nabin said, “Bihar and my constituency hold a special place in my life. A person can never truly grow by abandoning his roots. Bihar is my soil. Nurturing this land and keeping it fertile is something deeply rooted in my soul. I believe that wherever I go in life, my constituency will always remain with me.”

Another Iranian warship heading towards Sri Lankan waters, makes ‘urgent port call’ after Iris Dena torpedoed by US military

The development comes a day after the US sank and torpedoed the IRIS Dena, which was in the Sri Lankan waters in the Indian Ocean after returning from a military exercise in India’s Visakhapatnam.

Statesman News Service | NEW DELHI |

A day after a US submarine torpedoed an Iranian frigate, the Iris Dena, another ship from the Islamic country, is heading towards Sri Lanka’s territorial waters, Sri Lankan Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa told the country’s parliament on Thursday. The minister, however, didn’t provide any further details.

Sri Lankan MP Namal Rajapaksa later claimed that the Iranian ship is in the Island nation’s Exclusive Economic Zone and has made an “urgent port call”.

“It has been brought to our notice that another Iranian vessel is in Sri Lanka’s Exclusive Economic Zone, just outside our territorial waters, and has sought the government’s permission to make an urgent port call. However, it is yet awaiting the government’s clearance,” the MP wrote on X.

The MP urged the Sri Lankan government to reveal its stance on the matter. “If it is unable to make a decision, it should refer to the decision made by Madam Sirimavo Bandaranaike during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 when she adopted a neutral policy allowing a Pakistani aircraft to refuel at the BIA after India closed its airspace to Pakistani aircraft in response to the conflict,” he added.

LIVE Updates US-Israel-Iran War: Another Iranian warship heading towards Sri Lankan territory makes ‘urgent port call’

The development comes a day after the US sank and torpedoed the IRIS Dena, which was in the Sri Lankan waters in the Indian Ocean after returning from a military exercise in India’s Visakhapatnam.

At least 87 sailors were killed in the attack, and several others were feared dead. The Sri Lankan navy rescued 32 sailors.

US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth called it a “huge win” for Washington, asserting that America is winning “decisively, devastatingly and without mercy.” “Under the direct command of President Trump, the War Department unleashed this operation early Saturday morning,” he said.

The US, alongside Israel, attacked Iran last weekend, killing the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and several other top political and military leaders.

In response, Iran vowed to avenge Khamenei’s killing and launched retaliatory strikes on US and Israeli targets. Tehran struck US assets in several Gulf nations, sparking a wider Middle East conflict.

India, Finland elevate bilateral ties, agee to support efforts aimed at peace in Ukraine, West Asia

The two countries agreed to elevate bilateral ties to ‘’Strategic Partnership in Digitalisation and Sustainability’’ and signed three pacts, including one on migration and mobility partnership.

Ashok Tuteja | New Delhi |

Observing that military conflict can’t resolve any issue, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said India and Finland have agreed to continue supporting any effort aimed at an early cessation of hostilities and restoration of peace in Ukraine or West Asia.

‘’Both India and Finland believe in the rule of law, dialogue and diplomacy. We also agree that the reform of global institutions is not only essential but urgent to tackle increasing global challenges,’’ he said at a media interaction with visiting Finland President Alexander Stubb after talks between them.

The two countries agreed to elevate bilateral ties to ‘’Strategic Partnership in Digitalisation and Sustainability’’ and signed three pacts, including one on migration and mobility partnership.

Noting that the world is passing through a period of instability and uncertainty, Modi said there is war going on from Ukraine to West Asia. ‘’In this kind of global environment, the relations between India and Europe—two major global diplomatic powers—are entering a golden era,’’ he said and referred to the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) reached between the two sides earlier this year.

The PM said the two countries are opposed to terrorism in any form and are committed to uprooting the menace.

He said the increasing cooperation between India and Eruope is strengthening global stability, growth and mutual prosperity. ‘’This agreement,” he said, “will also enhance trade, investment and technology cooperation between India and Finland.”

The PM also spoke highly about the cooperation between India and Finland so far and referred to the presence of Nokia in India. He noted that architects from Finland helped India make the world’s highest railway bridge on river Chenab. “Today on President Stubb’s visit to India, we are elevating India-Finland relations to a strategic partnership in digitalisation and sustainability…this partnership will give an impetus to our cooperation in hi-tech areas ranging from from AI to 6G telecom, from clean energy to quantum.’’

In his remarks, the Finland President hailed India’s foreign policy, saying it is not illusionary but pragmatic and realistic. India has shown to the world how one can exercise strategic caution and safeguard autonomy while championing the cause of multilateralism and global cooperation. He also spoke of the India-Finland economic cooperation, saying the two countries aim to double bilateral trade. The world, President Stubb said, is changing and observed that India and its friends in the Global South will decide the direction in which the world will go. He said conflicts are going on in both Ukraine and West Asia. ‘’Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine has lasted for long—4 years—we agree that ending the war is in everyone’s interest,’’ he said. The visiting leader said a lasting peace can only be one that respects the principles of the United Nations.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to broaden and deepen cooperation in areas of trade and investment, digitalisation, clean energy and circular economy, semiconductors and critical minerals, education and innovation, technology, including AI, 6G, quantum computing and people-to-people ties.

RS polls: BJP fields Lakshmi Verma, Congress renominates Phulo Devi Netam from Chhattisgarh

The announcements have set the stage for an important political contest in the state Assembly, where numerical strength will determine the outcome.

Statesman News Service | Raipur |

The political contours of the upcoming Rajya Sabha election in Chhattisgarh became clearer this week as both the BJP and the Congress finalised their nominees for seats falling vacant in April this year. The saffron party has fielded senior leader Lakshmi Verma, while the Congress has once again nominated veteran tribal leader Phulo Devi Netam.

The announcements have set the stage for an important political contest in the state Assembly, where numerical strength will determine the outcome. The nominations also highlight the strategic emphasis both parties are placing on experienced leaders with strong grassroots connections.

The BJP’s choice of Lakshmi Verma marks the elevation of a long serving organisational leader with more than three decades of political and social engagement. Her name was finalised after internal consultations in which a panel of seven names was reportedly examined, before the list was narrowed to three contenders, Lakshmi Verma, Narayan Chandel and Dr Krishnamurti Bandhi.

Party sources indicated that Verma’s nomination reflects the leadership’s confidence in her long association with the party organisation and her experience in public life. Political observers also view the decision as a signal that Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai’s preference has received the approval of the party high command.

Born on 5 January 1967, Verma holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration and is fluent in Hindi and Chhattisgarhi. She hails from village Mudpar in Simga block of Balodabazar district and currently resides in Raipur.

Her political career began in 1994 when she was elected corporator from Ward No. 7 of the Raipur Municipal Corporation. She later served as the elected chairperson of the Raipur District Panchayat from 2010 to 2015. Between 2019 and 2021, she worked as an Independent Director at FSNL under the Union Ministry of Steel. Since October 2024, she has been serving as a member of the Chhattisgarh State Women’s Commission.

Beyond electoral politics, Verma has remained active in social initiatives and organisational work. She led the Shakti Mahila Manch in Raipur for over a decade and was honoured with the District Youth Award by the Nehru Yuva Kendra in 1999. She has also served as a member of the District Labour Rehabilitation Committee, patron of the Chhattisgarh Ekta Mazdoor Kalyan Sangh, and counsellor at the Raipur Family Court. Currently, she holds the position of National General Secretary in the All India Kurmi Kshatriya Mahasabha’s women’s wing and the Akhil Bharatiya Panchayat Parishad.

Within the BJP, Verma has been associated with the organisation since 1990 and has held several key roles, including State Executive Committee member, State Vice President of BJP Chhattisgarh from 2021 to 2024, district in charge of Gariaband and state media spokesperson.

Meanwhile, the Congress on Wednesday announced the renomination of senior tribal leader Phulo Devi Netam for the Rajya Sabha seat from Chhattisgarh. The decision by the party high command was welcomed by leaders and supporters across Bastar division and among tribal communities in the state.

If elected, Netam would secure a second consecutive term in the Upper House. She was first elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2020 and has since emerged as a prominent voice representing tribal concerns from the Bastar region. Earlier, she served as an MLA from the Keshkal Assembly constituency and also held the position of president of the Chhattisgarh Mahila Congress.

Within the Congress, her renomination is being viewed as recognition of her experience and strong grassroots connection with tribal communities. Party sources say her candidature is expected to reinforce the representation of tribal issues and regional concerns of Chhattisgarh in Parliament.

Senior Congress leaders and tribal organisations have welcomed the decision, describing Netam as a leader who has consistently raised issues affecting Bastar and the wider tribal population. Supporters say her continued presence in the Rajya Sabha would ensure a stronger voice for the region at the national level.

With the Rajya Sabha terms of several members expiring in April, political parties across the country have begun announcing their candidates. In Chhattisgarh, the nominations of Lakshmi Verma and Phulo Devi Netam have added a distinct political dimension to the election.

Intel agencies warn of AI propaganda drive to radicalise Indians over Khamenei killing

Radical elements are preparing artificial Intelligence generated videos and circulating them, to radicalise the youth and then instigate them to carry out attacks in India.

Manisha Gupta | New Delhi |

As the US-Israel-Iran war continues, the ripple effect was seen in India as well, in terms of protests against the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in recent US-Israel military strikes on Iran.

In this backdrop, an Intelligence Bureau official today revealed that some radical elements have been preparing Artificial Intelligence (AI) generated videos and circulating them, to radicalise the youth and then instigate them to carry out attacks in India. These are propaganda videos that are being prepared in multiple languages. Another official said that these elements are not just targeting the Shia Muslims. The audience includes the Sunnis as well.

Following the death of Khamenei, the Centre had issued an advisory stating that radical elements would look to infiltrate prayer meetings and solidarity rallies and radicalise the youth. Mourning processions have already been held by Shia communities in Hyderabad, Mumbai, Lucknow, and Delhi. Officials say that they are expecting more such processions in the days to come. This is what the radical elements would be looking to target, the official added.

Propaganda videos prepared in multiple languages

The propaganda videos are being prepared in multiple languages. For instance, the videos are made in Malayalam for Kerala, so that these elements are able to target the youth in that state. Similarly, for the Kashmir audience, the videos are in Kashmiri or Koshur, and for UP, it is in Hindi, the official said.

In addition to these languages, AI is also being used to create content in Urdu and other Indian languages. This is an indication that the radical elements are planning on expanding their reach using the war as an excuse.

Influencers being watched closely

In addition to the AI-generated videos that are in circulation, a close watch is being kept on influencers who run religious and cultural channels online. These persons would try to subtly slip in messages to incite the youth in India, the official added. Issues such as the Shia genocide and attack on the Umma are subjects that they would use to radicalise the people, the agencies have learnt.

Another official added that although the Islamic State is opposed to the Shias, it would still look to capitalise on the situation and push its agenda. This outfit and the likes of Al-Qaeda have very often used global issues to push their own version of Islam, the official said.

X, WhatsApp, Telegram being used to radicalise

Further, the agencies have learnt that platforms such as X, WhatsApp and Telegram are being used to spread the agenda of the radicals in India. Officials say that messaging currently is subtle, and this indicates that they are testing the waters. As the war intensifies, the message would become louder and open calls would be made to indulge in violence.

As per the agencies, this is a longer game, and the intention is not to strike immediately. These people want to create a pool of a large number of individuals by using the Iran issue and then strike big in India.

Farooq asks Centre to clarify stand on US-Israel strikes on Iran; Mehbooba questions NC’s silence

Farooq, while talking to media persons at Katra, suggested that the Indian government should give its official stance on the issue, adding that similar interventions had taken place in other countries as well.

Statesman News Service | Jammu |

National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Thursday asked the government of India to clearly state its position on the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, warning that the situation could have serious global repercussions.

Farooq, while talking to media persons at Katra, suggested that the Indian government should give its official stance on the issue, adding that similar interventions had taken place in other countries as well. He cautioned that the escalating tensions could even trigger a wider global conflict if not handled carefully.

The NC chief strongly criticised the US-Israel strikes on Iran, asserting that no country has the authority to impose control over another sovereign state. He also said it was the responsibility of the Government of India to clarify its stance on the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel.

Farooq said Iran is an independent nation and that the attack by the United States was unjustified. He maintained that invading another country is wrong and warned against attempts by powerful nations to dominate others. Referring to past instances, he also accused the US of similar actions in countries such as Venezuela and described the situation as unfortunate.

He warned that the consequences of the ongoing conflict could be felt across the world. According to him, if the situation continues to worsen, it could potentially lead to a much larger global crisis. He cautioned that such tensions might escalate further and even trigger a Third World War, stressing that the matter must be handled with great responsibility.

Commenting on public reactions, Farooq said there was anger among Muslims over the developments.

He alleged that the United States intends to take control of Iran, warning that such a move would have serious consequences.

Meanwhile, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti said that Farooq’s statement has come a full week after the strikes, after thousands have already died and after the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader.

“Iran, for decades, has consistently supported India on key foreign policy issues, including on Kashmir. The Centre’s current position clearly marks a departure from India’s traditional stance”, she said in a post on X.

Slamming the NC government in J&K, she said “What is even more troubling is the silence of J&K’s own government. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Farooq Abdullah himself have avoided a clear and strong condemnation. Instead of calling out Israel’s attack, the National Conference statement simply described the Iran strike as a recent development.”

“If the NC government truly stands with the people, why not pass a clear and official resolution through the cabinet? Why shift the discussion to the party office for a vague statement when the government itself has the authority to speak with clarity and conviction?”

“At moments like these, as the Chief Minister of India’s only Muslim-majority region, Omar Abdullah had an opportunity to show moral clarity, to stand in solidarity with the people and victims in Iran and send a message from Jammu & Kashmir that injustice and aggression cannot be ignored. Silence in the face of such tragedy only raises deeper questions”, Mehbooba added.

On the US-Israel vs Iran conflict, Fathali said, “We entered the negotiation table, despite knowing their intentions, but they set the time, before that they attacked, and we announced that we would respond… Unfortunately, the region faced so many problems, and the Zionist regime wanted to disturb and destroy all the properties in our region…”

On the auspicious occasion of Holi, Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee President Ajay Rai and other party workers visited Srividya Math on Thursday to receive blessings from Jagadguru Shankaracharya Swami Shri Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati Ji Maharaj.

Along with the state Congress chief Ajay Rai, party members offered rose petals at the feet of Jagadguru Shankaracharya and extended to him their heartfelt greetings for Holi. They prayed for the welfare of the country, state, and society.

On this occasion, Ajay Rai said the saint community has always guided society in the right direction. The guidance of great saints like Jagadguru Shankaracharya in protecting the traditions, faith, and religious values of Sanatan Dharma is inspiring for the entire society.

Rai expressed his support for the movements and religious and social issues being raised by Jagadguru Shankaracharya Swami Shri Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati Ji Maharaj and said that the Congress Party stands firmly with him and will continue to do so. If any attempt is made to harm the religion, culture, and dignity of the Sant Samaj, the Congress Party will strongly oppose it.

May this holy festival bring happiness, peace, prosperity, and well-being to everyone’s lives and further strengthen the spirit of love and unity in society.

Beyond power shift: Nitish’s exit triggers battle of loyalty in Bihar

There is a possibility that a BJP leader may hold the position of Chief Minister.

Imran Mojib | Patna |

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s emotional post on X announcing his decision to go to the Rajya Sabha and step down from the post of Chief Minister is being seen as the end of an era in the state’s politics and the rise of new leadership.

There is a possibility that a BJP leader may hold the position of Chief Minister.

It is believed that Nitish Kumar’s son Nishant Kumar could be made the new Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, and at the same time the command of Janata Dal United (JDU) might be completely handed over to him. Nitish Kumar may remain Chief Minister only until April 10, because the term of the outgoing members will end around that time, after which his Rajya Sabha tenure will formally begin.

For now, the NDA alliance does not appear to be in a hurry to form a new government and the leadership change so that the transfer of power can take place smoothly through the full process and mutual consensus.

Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar Samrat Choudhary congratulated Nitish Kumar on his decision to contest the Rajya Sabha elections. He said Kumar’s visionary leadership, unwavering commitment to good governance, and continuous efforts for the overall development of Bihar are an inspiration to everyone.

He also expressed confidence that Nitish Kumar’s experience and leadership will further strengthen the dignity of the Rajya Sabha.

Union Minister Giriraj Singh said Nitish Kumar is moving to the Upper House of the Parliament by his own personal wish and decision. He also emphasised that in the future the government in Bihar will function according to Nitish Kumar’s wishes and decisions.

Commenting on Nishant Kumar entry into politics, BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain acknowledged that there is a strong demand for him and said that if he steps into politics, it will certainly benefit Bihar.

However, the situation on the ground suggests that the transition may not be smooth.

Nitish Kumar’s decision to go to the Rajya Sabha has pushed the political temperature to its peak. A large crowd of JDU workers have gathered outside the Chief Minister’s residence. With slogans and emotional appeals, the workers declared: “Nitish Kumar belongs to Bihar, we will not let him go anywhere.”

Some workers even said they were ready to sacrifice their lives, which made the atmosphere even more tense.

The situation became uncontrollable when JDU Legislative Council member Sanjay Gandhi, considered close to Nitish Kumar, reached near the Chief Minister’s residence. Angry workers surrounded his vehicle, forced him to get out, and allegedly attacked the car.

Amid the political maneuvers being played out over the Rajya Sabha seat, the anger of grassroots workers indicates that this is not just a matter of a change in position, but also a battle of emotions and loyalty.

Now all eyes are on Nitish Kumar, how will he control the rising tension. The coming hours could prove extremely important for Bihar’s politics.

Iran guns for total chaos, hits Azerbaijan that has no US troops, base

Perhaps, it is, since Azerbaijan became the unsuspecting, yet eighth Iranian attack target in six days when an Arash-class suicide drome hit the Nakhchivan International Airport and another landed near a school in the Shekerabad village.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Is Iran going for scorched earth? Is Tehran moving towards a policy of regional saturation, from targeted military strikes on US-Israel bases and installations?

Perhaps, it is, since Azerbaijan became the unsuspecting, yet eighth Iranian attack target in six days when an Arash-class suicide drome hit the Nakhchivan International Airport and another landed near a school in the Shekerabad village.

This is an exclave of Azerbaijan, separated from mainland by Armenian land and has 44-km-long international border with Iran, with a sizeable Shia population. It came as a surprise since Azerbaijan has nothing to do with the current conflict between Iran, US and Israel and it hosts no American base, unlike Israel, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and Turkey, which was hit by a ballistic missile.

“The Azerbaijani side,” Azerbaijan’s embassy in Iran said in a statement on social media, “reserves the right to take appropriate response measures.”

“We strongly condemn these drone attacks launched from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which resulted in damage to the airport building and injuries of two civilians. This attack against the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan constitutes a violation of the norms and principles of international law and serves to increase tensions in the region,” the embassy added.

“We demand from the Islamic Republic of Iran to provide, within the shortest possible timeframe, a clear explanation regarding the case, conduct an appropriate investigation, and take the necessary urgent measures to ensure that such attacks are not repeated in the future.”

Iran has been stung by the loss of IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean to US submarine strike which claimed the lives of some 87 Iranian sailors, an event that has been dubbed as an “atrocity” at sea by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

“Mark my words: The U.S. will come to bitterly regret (the) precedent it has set,” he said on social media.

Ayatollah Abdollah Javadi Amoli, in one of the few clerical statements so far from Iran, later called on state television for the shedding of both Israeli and “Trump’s blood.”

“Fight the oppressive America, his blood is on my shoulders,’” Ayatollah Abdollah Javadi Amoli, Iranian cleric, said on state television. An open call to violence from an ayatollah, one of the highest ranks within the clergy of Shiite Islam, is a rare thing to happen.

So far the war between Iran and the US and Israel, which commenced after the latter hit Iran’s leadership, killing Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has claimed 1000 Iranian lives, apart from dozens on the other side. The conflict, which started with the avowed intent of regime change in Iran, has now shifted to an open-ended war since the goalpost has been shifted to destroying and debilitating Iran as a region power.

Nitish Kumar announces his decision to move to Rajya Sabha

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, putting an end to weeks of speculation, announced on Thursday that he would move to the Rajya Sabha, while assuring that the new government in Bihar will continue to receive his full support and guidance.

Imran Mojib | Patna |

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, putting an end to weeks of speculation, announced on Thursday that he would move to the Rajya Sabha, while assuring that the new government in Bihar will continue to receive his full support and guidance.

Taking to social media platform X, Nitish Kumar expressed gratitude to the people of the state for their continued trust and support over the past two decades. “For more than the past two decades, you have continuously maintained your trust and support in me. With that strength, we have served Bihar and all of you with complete dedication. It was the power of your trust and support that has enabled Bihar today to present a new dimension of development and dignity. For this, I have expressed my gratitude to you many times before as well,” he wrote.

The Chief Minister also said that since the beginning of his parliamentary career, he had long wished to serve in both Houses of the Bihar Legislature as well as both Houses of Parliament. “Since the beginning of my parliamentary life, I had a wish in my heart that I would become a member of both Houses of the Bihar Legislature as well as both Houses of Parliament. In the current election I wish to become a member of the Rajya Sabha,” he added.

Assuring people that his association with them will continue, the JD(U) chief reassured his commitment to build a developed Bihar will remain unchanged. “I want to assure you with complete honesty that my relationship with you will continue in the future as well, and together with you the resolve to build a developed Bihar will remain firm as before. The new government that will be formed will have my full support and guidance,” he said.

His decision marks a significant moment in Bihar’s politics. After serving the state as Chief Minister for over two decades, Nitish Kumar is expected to file his nomination for the Rajya Sabha later today, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah set to be present on the occasion.

Amid discussions about Nitish Kumar moving to Delhi, speculation has intensified in Bihar about a possible leadership change and the likelihood of his son, Nishant Kumar, being given a new responsibility.

During the Union Budget 2026 the government has also announced measures promoting digital trade facilitation, tax certainty, reduced compliance and litigation, trust-based customs systems, and an investment-friendly tax regime.

In terms of startups, over 2.16 lakh startups have been recognised by DPIIT as of February 2026 making India stand firmly as one of the world’s largest startup ecosystems.

Further, credit guarantee schemes have also enhanced EoDB by providing collateral-free, or third-party guarantee-free, loans for MSMEs and startups.

Credit Guarantee Scheme for Micro & Small Enterprises (CGTMSE) has facilitated credit guarantees for credit support of up to Rs 10 crore to Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs).

While the Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups (CGSS) supported startups by providing credit guarantees; the revised framework has enhanced guarantee coverage, increasing the maximum limit from Rs 10 crore to Rs 20 crore per eligible borrower.

Further, the Credit Guarantee Scheme for Exporters (CGSE) provided for the additional collateral-free credit support of up to Rs 20,000 crore to direct and indirect exporter MSMEs.

The government has also introduced reforms in the insurance sector through the Sabka Bima, Sabki Raksha (Amendment of Insurance Laws) Act, 2025. The legislation raises the foreign direct investment limit to 100 per cent and simplifies regulatory requirements, aiming to expand capital availability and deepen insurance penetration.

Regulatory reforms are being complemented by efforts to reduce compliance burdens. The Reserve Bank of India has consolidated more than 9,000 circulars into 238 Master Directions to simplify regulatory guidance. Similarly, the Jan Vishwas Act and its proposed amendments seek to decriminalise hundreds of minor offences across multiple laws.

India’s insolvency framework has also been strengthened through the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, which has enabled the rescue of over 3,800 companies and helped creditors realise nearly Rs 3.99 lakh crore under resolution plans as of September 2025.

Additional reforms include the Securities Markets Code, rationalisation of the Minimum Alternate Tax framework, simplification of labour laws through four labour codes, expansion of quality control standards, and the Regulatory Compliance Burden initiative that has reduced more than 47,000 compliances.

Israel warns Iran ready to target ‘everyone around them’

IDF International Spokesperson Lt Ben Cohen claimed that Iran has demonstrated a willingness to escalate tensions across the region.

Manisha Gupta | New Delhi |

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) today warned that the Iranian terrorist regime has made it very clear that they’re willing to target “everyone around them” in West Asia as the conflict continues to escalate in the region. IDF International Spokesperson Lt Ben Cohen claimed that Iran has demonstrated a willingness to escalate tensions across the region.

“I can tell you that the Iranian terrorist regime has made it very clear that they’re willing to target everyone around them in the area and they’ve done so continuously over the last few days,” he said, speaking to IANS.

Cohen said the ongoing campaign, named ‘Operation Roaring Lion’, was launched to neutralise the major security threat posed by Iran.

“We began ‘Operation Roaring Lion’ on Saturday morning with the primary objective of targeting the Iranian terror regime and eliminating an existential threat to Israel and the entire world, which includes the ballistic missile programme, the Iranian desire to achieve and obtain a nuclear weapon, and the proxy network,” Cohen said.

The Israeli military also mentioned that in the early hours of Thursday, it shot down an Iranian Yakovlev Yak-130 fighter jet and is continuing its operations targeting aerial defence systems and ballistic missile infrastructure inside Iran.

He added that over the past several days, the United States and Israel have continued coordinated strikes across Iranian territory. According to him, the operations have targeted multiple strategic installations, including ballistic missile facilities, air force assets, and naval infrastructure.

Referring to the latest military developments, Cohen said Israeli forces had carried out a significant aerial engagement in recent hours.

“In recent hours, we had a historic moment when an IDF fighter jet shot down an Iranian Yak-130 fighter jet over Tehran, and we continue to target aerial defence systems within the Iranian terror regime, to target ballistic missile targets and to target other Iranian terror regime targets,” he told IANS.

‘I just wanna go home’: WI Coach Daren Sammy as Middle East airspace restrictions delay team’s departure

Expressing his frustration, West Indies head coach Daren Sammy said he simply wants to return home. The former two-time T20 World Cup-winning captain shared his feelings on X on Thursday.

The ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iran has disrupted travel across the sporting world, with several teams participating in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup facing difficulties returning home after their matches.

Among those affected is the West Indies team, whose departure from India has been delayed due to international airspace restrictions caused by heightened security concerns in the Gulf region.

Expressing his frustration, West Indies head coach Daren Sammy said he simply wants to return home. The former two-time T20 World Cup-winning captain shared his feelings on X on Thursday, posting: “I just wanna go home.”

However, Daren Sammy later shared another update on X, expressing frustration over the lack of clarity around the team’s departure.

“At least an update, tell us something. Today, tomorrow, next week. It’s been 5 days,” Sammy wrote in another post on his X account.

Earlier on Monday, Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirmed that the team’s departure from India had been postponed following their exit from the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup due to airspace restrictions in the Gulf region.

In an official statement, CWI said:
“These restrictions are a direct result of the security threats posed by military action in the Gulf region, which has impacted several international flight routes and required airlines to adjust scheduled services for safety reasons.”

The board added that the safety and well-being of players, coaching staff, and officials remain its highest priority.

“CWI is working closely with the International Cricket Council (ICC), relevant governmental authorities, and airline partners to secure the earliest possible safe travel arrangements for the squad and support staff,” the statement said.

West Indies were eliminated from the tournament after a five-wicket loss to India at Eden Gardens in Kolkata during the Super 8 stage. The Caribbean side had remained unbeaten during the league stage but suffered defeats against South Africa and India, eventually missing out on a place in the semi-finals.

In their final match, West Indies posted 195/4, with contributions from Roston Chase (40), Shai Hope (32), and Shimron Hetmyer (27). A late unbeaten 76-run partnership between Jason Holder (37*) and Rovman Powell (34*) helped push the total.

India’s bowling was led by Jasprit Bumrah, who took 2/36. The hosts chased down the target with key innings from Sanju Samson (97* off 50 balls), Suryakumar Yadav (18 off 16), and Tilak Varma (27 off 15) to seal a comfortable victory.

West Indies have previously won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup twice, in 2012 and 2016.

Salim-Javed era: The time when writers became the driving force behind high-impact Hindi film stories

Before the hero moved, before the villain reacted, it was the Salim-Javed line that arrived first. Sharp, dramatic, impossible to ignore. Their dialogues walked out with the audience, repeating themselves like part of daily life.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Imagine a buzzing film set in Bombay in the late 1960s. Extras milling around, lights blazing, and somewhere in the chaos, a struggling actor hoping for his big break crosses paths with a sharp-tongued dialogue writer who grew up in a house full of Urdu poetry. That actor was Salim Khan. That writer was Javed Akhtar.

Nobody on that set knew they were witnessing the start of one of Hindi cinema’s most powerful creative partnerships. For over a decade, they worked side by side and wrote scripts for around twenty films. Their names appeared on movie posters right next to producers, directors, music directors, lyricists. That was rare. Writers usually stayed invisible. But Salim and Javed became stars without ever appearing on screen.

‘Sholay’ and the national memory

One cannot talk about their legacy without mentioning the massive success of ‘Sholay’. Directed by Ramesh Sippy, this film mixed action, drama, humour, and strong writing.

But what truly stuck in public memory were the dialogues. Lines were performed, quoted, repeated. People memorised the film.

‘Kitne aadmi the?’ A single threatening line spoken by the villain Gabbar Singh became instantly recognisable across the country.

That was the magic of Salim-Javed. They wrote lines that behaved like cultural catchphrases.

Urban streets, underworld shadows

Their stories did not float in fantasy worlds. They were rooted in urban life. Cities, factories, docks, mines, crime networks, and struggling middle-class homes filled their narratives. They showed the darker side of development. They showed how a system could fail an honest person again and again.

The central hero often stood alone, facing a rigged world. He had inner demons. Emotional wounds. Sometimes he even questioned his own path. But he never gave up on fighting.

Many writers can create plots. Few can create unforgettable lines. Salim-Javed specialised in powerful metaphorical language. Instead of plain sentences, they used images and comparisons that painted pictures in the audience’s mind.

A mine could become a giant creature swallowing workers. Money could become poison. Darkness could symbolise emotional pain. Light could hint at hope.

These metaphors made dialogues richer and more memorable. Even when audiences forgot entire story details, they remembered the lines.

Their best metaphors usually appeared in the final parts of the film when emotions reached peak intensity.

Revenge, power, emotional showdowns in ‘Trishul’

In the film ‘Trishul’, the central character arrives in Delhi with a burning desire to avenge the suffering of his mother, who had been abandoned by a wealthy and ambitious father. What follows is psychological duel between father and son.

As the son slowly destroys the father’s financial empire, the confrontation becomes deeply emotional. When the father realises his business is collapsing, he compares himself to a ship that is not about to sink, even though investors are running away like rats. This simple metaphor captures arrogance, denial, desperation in one stroke.

That coal mine in ‘Kaala Patthar’

In ‘Kaala Patthar’, the hero works in harsh conditions inside coal mines. His personality is quiet but heavy with guilt and anger. When a tragic accident exposes the cruelty of the mine owner, the hero confronts him in public.

Instead of simply accusing the owner of exploitation, he compares the mine to a giant python that swallows workers, crushes them, drains their blood, and spits them out as corpses.

This type of metaphor turns social criticism into powerful cinema language. The audience does not just hear about injustice. They visualise it as a terrifying creature feeding on human lives.

Duty versus love in ‘Shakti’

Another powerful emotional drama unfolds in ‘Shakti’ where a strict policeman father and his rebellious son clash due to conflicting values. A childhood kidnapping incident plants the first seed of emotional distance. As the son grows up, he gradually moves toward crime, even while loving his mother deeply.

When the father realises that smugglers have essentially “bought” his son by paying his bail, he does not simply say he has lost him. Instead, he describes the moment as if someone had placed a price tag on his child and purchased him right in front of his eyes.

It is humiliation. Helplessness. A feeling that love has been defeated by money.

The emotional tension in the same story rises further when the son tries to take his ill mother for expensive treatment. She refuses because his wealth comes from dishonest means.

Many critics accused these films of glorifying violence and macho masculinity. But supporters argue that the true brilliance lay in emotional depth created through poetic dialogue. Instead of a brute, the hero became a tragic figure shaped by circumstances. That emotional poetry helped audiences sympathise with even morally grey characters.

Cinema songs and metaphors

Before this writing duo, metaphorical language existed mostly in film songs rather than spoken dialogues. Poets writing lyrics had already created memorable images comparing life to caravans, dreams to waves, love to storms.

Salim and Javed moved that poetic tradition into regular speech within films. They proved that even everyday conversations between characters could sound lyrical without becoming difficult to understand.

Dialogues that became cultural currency

The influence of their writing spilled into daily life in fascinating ways. Advertisements borrowed villain characters and dialogue styles to sell products years after film releases. Audio records containing only dialogues were sold alongside film songs. Fans memorised favourite lines and repeated them like quotes from poetry.

On fan websites and discussion forums, people listed their most loved film dialogues, often linking the words directly with the actor who delivered them. Actor and dialogue merged into one iconic memory in public imagination. Then came memes too.

But intellectuals debated their impact

Some intellectual circles worried such stories encouraged revenge-driven heroes and violent solutions to anything, everything. They argued celebration of macho anger might shape public attitudes negatively.

Supporters countered these stories reflected real frustrations faced by ordinary people. The hero’s anger was not meaningless rage. It was reaction to systemic injustice.

Male characters dominated screen time. Women provided crucial emotional direction. Budhi maa‘s silent approval or disapproval could change hero’s path. Lover’s gentle words could soften hardened hearts. Wife’s moral stand could challenge corruption more powerfully than physical confrontation. (Nah, we don’t do that here!)

How Salim-Javed changed the status of film writers

Another lasting impact was the visibility they brought to screenwriters. Earlier, writers rarely received star-level recognition. After their success, audiences began noticing who actually created the story and dialogue behind these hit films.

At the heart of Salim-Javed’s work was a simple but effective formula: take a relatable emotional conflict, place it in a socially charged setting, and express the inner turmoil through striking metaphors that amplify feelings without complicating language.

This emotional grammar made their stories timeless.

Nepal Election Day Reflection: KP Sharma Oli says March 6 marks two moments when he returned from ‘mouth of death’

The CPN-UML chairman used the moment to pay tribute to fallen activists and recall the long years he spent behind bars during the struggle against the Panchayat regime.

Statesman News Service | Kathmandu |

Some dates quietly pass every year. Others carry stories that refuse to fade. For former Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, March 6 (Falgun 21 in Nepali calendar) is one of those days he says he can never forget.

While Nepal remains glued to the high-stakes drama of election day, the former PM chose the moment to revisit a personal memory. He posted on Facebook that this is one date he can never forget; the day he says he escaped death twice, once during the Sukhani martyrs’ killings in the Jhapa movement era and decades later during his life-saving kidney transplant.

A date that brings back old political wounds

March 6 in Nepal marks Sukhani Martyrs’ Day, a dark chapter in the country’s political history.

In his post, Oli recalled the days of the Jhapa movement, a rebellion against the autocratic Panchayat regime in the early 1970s. Many young activists were under arrest during the crackdown. Oli said he too was imprisoned during that turbulent period.

According to him, five fellow activists Ramnath Dahal, Netra Ghimire, Biren Rajbanshi, Krishna Kuinkel and Narayan Rajbanshi were taken out of jail by authorities under the pretext of transferring them to another prison. Instead, they were taken to the Sukhani forest in Jhapa and killed.

Oli said he narrowly escaped the same fate.

He described that moment as one where he “returned from the mouth of death,” while his comrades lost their lives. The killings later became a powerful symbol of resistance against the authoritarian system.

Fourteen years behind bars

The aftermath of the movement was harsh. Oli wrote that he spent 14 years in prison, a long stretch that shaped his political journey.

Those years, he suggested, were part of the struggle that eventually helped push Nepal toward democratic change.

Remembering the fallen activists, Oli offered a tribute saying their sacrifice played a crucial role in bringing the country toward a democratic dawn.

Second brush with death: This time in a hospital

But the strange coincidence does not end with politics.

Oli pointed out that exactly six years ago on the same date, he underwent his second kidney transplant. The surgery was a critical medical procedure after years of health complications.

He described both events, the political survival decades ago and the life-saving surgery years later, as days when he felt he got “a new life.”

A controversial political legacy

Oli, who served as Nepal’s 38th Prime Minister, has long been one of the country’s most polarising political figures. He has been chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (UML) since 2014 and served as a Member of Parliament from 2017 to 2025.

His political career has often been centre of controversy from sharp remarks against critics and the media to allegations of cronyism, corruption and nepotism during his time in power.

His government also faced severe backlash after deadly crackdowns during the anti-corruption Gen Z protests, which eventually led to his removal from office.
