N Korea condemns US aircraft carrier deployment

IANS | Seoul |

North Korea on Tuesday condemned the deployment of a US nuclear aircraft carrier and its strike group near the Korean peninsula and warned that it was prepared to respond to a "pre-emptive strike", according to authorities.

"If the US dares opt for a military action, crying out for pre-emptive attack and removal of the headquarters, North Korea is ready to react to any mode of war desired by the US" a foreign ministry spokesman said in a statement published by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The statement came after the Pentagon announced Saturday that it was deploying the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson and a Navy strike group to waters off the North Korean coast in response to the latest missile provocations by the Pyongyang regime, on April 5.

"We will take the toughest counteraction against the provocateurs in order to defend ourselves by powerful force of arms," the statement added.

Following President Donald Trump's inauguration in January, the US government has called for a tighter approach of dealing with Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programme, Efe news reported.

The ministry also highlighted the fact that Washington has analyzed different scenarios for carrying out a pre-emptive strike at the hermit state or eliminating its leader Kim Jong-un.

"We will hold the US wholly accountable for the catastrophic consequences to be entailed by its outrageous actions." the spokesperson said, adding "The prevailing grave situation proves once again that (North Korea) was entirely just when it increased in every way its military capabilities for self-defence and pre-emptive attack with a nuclear force as a pivot."

Tension on the Korean peninsula has been increasing amid suspicions that Pyongyang may be preparing a new missile or nuclear test this month.

North Korea convened its annual parliamentary session on Tuesday to commemorate the fifth anniversary of former leader Kim Jong-il's transition to power.

In addition, the country will also celebrate the 105th anniversary of the birth of its founder, Kim Il-sung, this Saturday and the 85th anniversary of the founding of the Korean People's Army on April 25.

President Jacob Zuma warns against racism resurgence in South Africa

IANS | Cape Town |

South African President Jacob Zuma has warned against "a resurgence of racism" in the country where "racists have become more emboldened".

"We have sadly not yet succeeded in building the non-racial society that we envisaged," Zuma said at the Chris Hani Wreath Laying Ceremony and handover of the Chris Hani heritage site in Boksburg, Gauteng province, on Monday.

The late Hani, South African Communist Party (SACP) General Secretary, was assassinated at his Boksburg home on April 10, 1993. His death almost derailed the reconciliation talks that led to the end of apartheid in 1994.

Zuma lauded Hani as a real fighter against racism, who lost his life at the hands of hard-core racists, Xinhua news agency reported.

The President linked last week's massive protests to racism, saying it demonstrated that "racism is real and exists in our country".

Thousands of South Africans marched in parts of the country to press their demand for the resignation of Zuma last Friday.

Although SACP leaders shared the same stage with Zuma in memory of Hani, the SACP said it has not changed its plea for Zuma to resign.

Zuma has come under mounting pressure after he reshuffled the cabinet on March 31, sacking or replacing 10 ministers and 10 deputy ministers, notably Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

Zuma said many placards and posters carried by the protesters "displayed beliefs that we thought had been buried in 1994".

Some posters depicted black people as baboons, Zuma said, adding that "it is clear that some of our white compatriots regard black people as being lesser human beings or sub-human".

"The racist onslaught has become more direct and is no longer hidden as was the case in the early years of our constitutional democratic order," said Zuma.

"We cannot allow and assist racists to take our country backwards."

At a legislative level, the South African government has published the Prevention and Combating of Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Bill, according to Zuma.

Once it becomes law, the law will criminalise several forms of discrimination including on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion and nationality.

Cancer battle brought Michael Douglas close to family

PTI | London |

Actor Michael Douglas says he has become a better husband and a father since his cancer battle.

The 72-year-old actor was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2010 and says that since recovering from the illness he has been determined to spend more time with Catherine Zeta Jones, 47, and their children, Dylan, 16, and Carys, 13, reported Contactmusic.

“I have more time with them, and I chose to use my time. Once I started coming out the other end of stage four, it gave me a whole new appreciation of life. Also it allowed me to spend a fair amount of time with my wife and children, and support them.

“When you get into your 70s, you are not getting the same roles. And it made me appreciate how blessed it was to have the family I have around me in life. For many of us that are getting there, you start not taking the years for granted. Family gives me more purpose than any other thing in my life,” Douglas says.

The couple briefly split in 2014 but are now happier than ever.

“You've both got to want to make it happen. Every marriage has got its issues – this and that. I think if you are fortunate enough to take a look, and you want make it work and you want to try then you can succeed. Then when we do succeed it makes you tighter than ever before – we are like 17 years now,” he adds.

Executions in China said to outpace world despite decline

AP | Beijing |

China's use of the death penalty remains shrouded in secrecy and still outpaces the rest of the world combined, even after the nation's execution rate fell sharply over the past decade, human rights activists said on Tuesday.

Amnesty International reported 1,032 state-sponsored executions worldwide in 2016, excluding China, where the true number is unknown because the government considers it a state secret. The group said it believes China executed thousands, but it didn't offer a more precise estimate due to a lack of accurate information.

The human rights group Dui Hua estimates about 2,000 executions took place in China last year, down from a 6,500 a decade ago, said the group's executive director, John Kamm.

The tally was based on research into lower-level court cases and contacts with government officials and Chinese and Western legal scholars, Kamm said.

Amnesty said its figure for worldwide executions excluding China represents a 37 per cent drop from 2015. The United States recorded 20 executions, its fewest in 25 years, in part because of court rulings and shortages of chemicals used in lethal injections.

Yet as other countries shift away from capital punishment, China increasingly is seen as an outlier, said Amnesty International East Asia Director Nicholas Bequelin. Government officials did not immediately comment on Amnesty's report.

But China's chief justice, Zhou Qiang, told the national legislature last month that over the past decade executions were limited to “an extremely small number of criminals for extremely serious offenses.”

China has faced longstanding pressure from the international community to curb its use of the death penalty, which reached a frenzy in 1983 with 24,000 executions after provincial courts were given powers to mete out capital punishment, according to Dui Hua.

The nation also has faced criticism for harvesting organs from executed inmates, including for sale to patients from overseas. China banned the practice in 2015 but Bequelin said it's impossible to know whether organ harvesting for profit has ceased because the legal system operates within a “black box” with little transparency.

“China is trying to have it both ways, both getting credit and allaying international pressure over the death penalty in the county, while maintain and enforcing an elaborate system of secrecy,” Bequelin said.

Oversight of death sentence cases was returned to China's highest court, the Supreme People's Court, in 2007. Since that time, the government has narrowed which crimes can bring capital punishment but still lists more than three dozen eligible offenses, including treason, separatism, spying, arson, murder, rape, robbery and human trafficking.

Ninety per cent of executions last year were for homicide cases, said legal scholar Hong Daode.

“There has been a long tradition in China that the one that has taken people's lives should pay with his own life,” said Hong, a professor of criminal law at China University of Political Science and Law.

Hong and others faulted Amnesty for claiming in its report that verdicts on only 85 executions between 2014 and 2016 showed up on a supreme court website, out of at least 931 that the human rights group tallied through public news reports.

Among the cases omitted were the executions of foreigners for drug crimes and people accused of terrorism in China's in Xinjiang Uyghur autonomous region, the group said.

La Liga side Granada hire Arsenal legend Tony Adams as manager

Adams has been appointed as caretaker coach of Granada until the end of the season.

IANS | Granada |

La Liga strugglers Granada FC on Monday fired coach Lucas Alcaraz following a 1-3 home defeat against Valencia a day earlier, and hired former Arsenal legend Tony Adams, who will try to salvage Granada from relegation.

The club in a statement said that its decision was made following the team's recent poor results, and thus, Granada had to part ways with Alcaraz and his staff, reports Efe.

Adams has been appointed as caretaker coach of Granada until the end of the season.

As a player, Adams played more than 500 matches at Arsenal, with which he won four league titles, as well as three FA Cups and two League Cups.

The former England international had an unsuccessful managerial spell with Portsmouth in 2008-09 and also led Wycombe Wanderers and Azerbaijani side Gabala.

The former Arsenal captain has taken on the role of sporting director at Granada recently, of which he said: "I'm here to put the Spanish structure in place, with players who will belong to Granada CF and who will fight for Granada."

After 31 La Liga weeks, Granada currently holds the next to last place on the table with 20 points gathered through four wins, eight draws and 19 defeats

Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich akin to final: Toni Kroos

"They will be two fantastic games. This tie could easily be the Champions League final."

IANS | Madrid |

Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has asserted that the upcoming quarterfinal clash against German football giants Bayern Munich may decide the future winners of this year's Champions League.

Real are scheduled to take on Bayern in what is expected to be a high voltage encounter at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Wednesday and then six days later at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium here.

Kroos, who represented Bayern from 2007-2014, asserted that the two-legged home quarter-final tie against the reigning German champions will be like a final.

The 27-year-old said that he was looking forward to taking on many of his friends and former teammates. Kroos came through the Bayern ranks, playing 130 Bundesliga games for the club.

"I know the players there better than anyone and it will be a special tie, but I don't have any other big feelings towards it. I always keep up with how Bayern are doing. There are still many of the same players there. We are all looking forward to these games — both my friends at Bayern Munich and I," the Germany international told the official Real Madrid website.

"They will be two fantastic games. This tie could easily be the Champions League final."

Kroos asserted that the players of both teams will be under immense pressure and was confident that his will to win will enable him to perform well despite the pressure cooker situation.

"At Bayern you have the same pressure, they expect you to win every game and competition that you're in. And this is the same as Madrid. Every time something goes wrong, perhaps due to other teams being at a better level, there is more commotion here than in Munich," the 27-year-old said.

"You see people are closer to the team and more concerned with what you are doing. My attitude is the same as that of the club, because I want to win everything. And this desire is stronger than the pressure a player puts himself under. This has always worked through the years as I have been able to win titles along the way," he added.

Bayern's veteran star Arjen Robben meanwhile urged his team to be confident ahead of the tie.

"It is difficult, they are one of the best teams in the world, with world-class players," the Dutch winger told AS.

"It will be important to start the game confidently and with passion on the pitch, and try and impose our own style of play. It is about going out to win the game from the first moment. We have reasons to be confident, although at the same time we must be humble. We need to begin the game with passion, aggression and show that we want to win from the first moment."

Bayern thrashed domestic rivals Borussia Dortmund 4-1 in the German league which Robben felt was the ideal preparation leading up to the Real tie.

"We have just beaten a big opponent (in Dortmund) which of course gives us confidence," he said.

"We created many chances and enjoyed ourselves on the pitch. I feel that we are ready for Madrid."

UN designates Malala as youngest Messenger of Peace

IANS | United Nations |

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday designated 19-year-old Malala Yousafzai from Pakistan as the UN's youngest Messenger of Peace.

In a ceremony held here, Guterres said the designation came for Malala's service to the ideals and objectives of the United Nations and her courageous defence of the rights of all people, including women and girls, Xinhua reported.

Malala said she was honoured to be the Messenger of Peace. At the occasion, she once again appealed for equal education opportunities for girls.

"Education is the basic right for every child; especially for girls, this right should not be neglected," Malala was quoted as saying.

Born on July 12, 1997 in Pakistan's Swat Valley, Yousafzai became an international symbol of the fight for girls' education after being shot on October 9, 2012 for opposing Taliban restrictions on female education.

She survived the attack and became an advocate for the millions of girls denied a formal education worldwide.

Malala became the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 2014.

US open to further action on Syria: White House

IANS | Washington |

The White House on Monday said that the US was open to further action on Syria if Damascus continued to use chemical weapons.

"The sight of people being gassed and blown away by barrel bombs ensures that if we see this kind of action again, we hold open the possibility of future action," Xinhua quoted White House spokesman Sean Spicer as saying.

The US on Thursday launched 59 Tomahawk missiles at Syria to neutralise its chemical weapon arsenal, two days after reports of a chemical weapons attack emerged from the battleground in Syria, which the West said the Syrian government should be to blame.

"The resulting action of what happened ensured that their fueling operation is gone from this air facility, 20 per cent of their fixed-wing aircraft were destroyed and knocked out," Spicer said of the US missile attacks on Thursday.

US President Donald Trump told Congress that his decision to attack Syria was in the interest of the US, adding that further actions are being considered.

EPL: Crystal Palace stun listless Arsenal

The Eagles proving their result at Stamford Bridge a week ago was no flash in the pan!

SNS | New Delhi |

Relegation-threatened Crystal Palace stunned Arsenal 3-0 in their English Premier League tie at Selhurst Park on Monday, the Eagles churning out a stellar all-round performance to put them six points above the relegation zone.

Barely a week ago, Sam Allardyce’s men had scripted an unlikely smash-and-grab victory over league leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge but their performance against Arsene Wenger men was even better.

The Eagles got off to a brilliant start, with Andros Townsend finishing off a flowing move in the 17th minute to take a vital lead. In-form winger Wilfried Zaha had slipped while controlling Yohan Cabaye’s though ball, but still managed to send in a low cross which Townsend toe-poked past Arsenal keeper Damian Martinez.

Martinez was in the side after the Gunners’ first two keepers, Petr Tech and David Ospinia, were both ruled out due to injuries, but on the whole Wenger fielded a very strong XI. Of course, defensive stalwart Laurent Koscieny was missing but a team of Arsenal’s resources should have  had enough quality in their bench to eke out a result at Selhurt Park.

But with talisman Alexis Sanchez and the mercurial Mesut Ozil having an off day, Arsenal never truly threatened Wayne Hennessey in the first half. Defensive midfielder Thomas Elneny had a shot from distance but that was well-saved by the Eagles custodian. Arsenal were dominating possession and Sanchez had a chance inside the box but his left-footed shot was comfortably gathered by Henneseey as the Eagles went into the interval leading 1-0.

If Arsenal’s first-half performance was poor, the second was calamitous as they failed conjure anything of note in the final 45 minutes.

Palace sensed an upset was on the cards and their counter-attacking tactics paid off handsomely when Yohan Cabaye sent in a looping shot from just inside the box which sailed into the far corner in the 63rd minute. Once again, the excellent Zaha was instrumental in the goal, sending in a inch-perfect cutback for Cabaye to stroke home.

And the result was confirmed five minutes later when Luka Milivojevic scored his first goal in England from the penalty spot. Martinez had caught Townsend inside the box and left referee Michael Oliver with no chance but to point to the spot. The Serbian midfielder picked his corner and despite Martinez going the right way, Palace were 3-0 up on the night.

While Allardyce’s men remain in 16th place and aren't quite out of the woods yet, another win or two from their next seven games would see them over the finish line.

For Arsenal, as expected, the result doesn't make for easy viewing as Manchester United are now three points clear in 5th place and a season without any European football is a likely possibility at this stage.

Pyongyang accuses US of ‘maintaining colonial rule’ in South Korea

IANS | Pyongyang |

North Korea on Monday accused the US of trying to "maintain its colonial rule" in South Korea by helping the conservative forces remain in power.

Rodong Sinmun, the official daily of the ruling Korean Workers' Party, said the US is "displeased with the ever increasing possibility of the collapse of the conservative regime and regime change by the progressive pro-reform forces in South Korea."

"The reality is clear that the US remains unchanged in its wild ambition for maintaining its colonial rule over South Korea and gets ever more sly and vicious in its methods to quench the South Korean people's growing desire for independence," Xinhua quoted the newspaper as saying.

Whenever South Korea faced a serious political crisis, "the US maintained its colonial rule by replacing its lackeys with others and setting up a new puppet regime," the newspaper said.

"The colonial rule that divided the territory of Korea and the homogeneous Korean nation into two and inflicted unbearable pain upon the Koreans is bound to collapse under the united struggle of the Koreans in the north and the south and abroad," it said.

The situation on the Korean peninsula is getting tense as the US is sending an aircraft carrier combat group to the waters near the North Korea.

Washington says the deployment is in reaction to "provocations" by the North Korea.

Pyongyang has carried out a number of missile launches and nuclear tests, with the most recent being Wednesday's launch of a ballistic missile.
