Sting is working on reggae album with Shaggy

IANS | Los Angeles |

British singer Sting has teamed up with Jamaican rapper Shaggy to release a reggae album this year.

The pair’s first single “Don’t Make Me Wait” is set for release on February 2 and, although fans may find it hard to envision their voices together, Sting, whose real name is Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, is adamant they have “a lot in common.”

“We have a lot in common. We’re both married to very strong women. We both come from small islands that used to belong to the queen. And we like each other.

We like each other’s voices and music and vibe. We’re like kindred spirits,” Sting told York Post newspaper Page Six column, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

The duo debuted their new single in Jamaica last week at a Shaggy and Friends charity concert raising money for Bustamante Hospital for Children.

56-year-old builder shot dead in Pune

PTI | Pune |

A 56-year-old builder was allegedly shot dead by two unidentified men outside his residence in Deccan-Gymkhana area here, police said on Sunday.

The assailants fired five rounds at Devendra Shah in front of his son on the plush Prabhat Road around midnight last night. Two of the bullets hit Shah, an official said.

Police have retrieved a CCTV camera footage of the area in which the two assailants are seen.

The two assailants came near the building in which Shah resided in Lane No. 7 on Prabhat Road and started arguing with a man who runs a laundry business there.

“One of the assailants asked the laundry man to summon Shah. The shop owner then called the builder down,” Additional Commissioner of Police (South/North region) Ravindra Sengaonkar said.

The moment Shah came down with his son, both the assailants fired five rounds at the builder, he said.

“Two bullets hit Shah. The assailants then fled the spot,” said Sengaonkar.

The builder was rushed to a nearby private hospital where he succumbed during treatment.

“We have got the CCTV camera footage in which the two assailants are clearly seen coming,” the officer said, adding that the assailants had not covered their faces.

Shah’s son told the police his father did not have enmity with anyone, Sengaonkar said. The motive behind the killing was yet to be ascertained, he said.

The Deccan Gymkhana police registered a case under IPC Section 302 (murder) against the assailants, he said, adding that an investigation was on.

Soon, using railway cloak rooms, lockers to cost more

PTI | New Delhi |

Soon, passengers who stow their luggage in railway cloak rooms and lockers would have to shell out more for availing the service.

The railway board has now empowered Divisional Railway Managers (DRMs) to raise the usage fee for the service at stations.

It will soon launch a bidding system to modernise the service, including a computerised inventory, and allowing fee to be raised annually.

Currently, Railways charges Rs 20 for the use of a locker for 24 hours and Rs 30 for every additional 24 hours or part thereof. Earlier it was Rs 15.

The cloak room rent is Rs 15 for 24 hours, in 2000 it was Rs 7 and Rs 20 and for every additional 24 hours which was earlier Rs 10.

The last revision of the rates was done in February 2013, the first since 2000 when the prices were Rs 10 and 15 for 24 hours for use of lockers and cloak rooms respectively.

Once the new policy is in place, the base price for a unit of luggage to be kept for specified hours in the cloak rooms and lockers will be decided through an open bidding system.

“It has, now been decided that DRMs shall have full powers for upward revision of the cloak room and locker tariff at stations based on their local conditions…,” the new policy decision said.

This service is widely used by backpackers and many domestic tourists who are on short visits to a tourist spot.

“Many do not want to lug their luggage around and want a safe place to keep their stuff. The railways has been providing this service for long.

“At some stations where there is high tourist footfall and thus high demand, we thought that the officer in the field should decide how much he wants to fix the fee at,” a senior railway official said.

The service in fact is quiet helpful for tourists – all one has to do is deposit the luggage duly locked and then a receipt is given.

This receipt, duly signed as an acknowledgement of having received the luggage, should be surrendered along with the prescribed charges at the time of delivery. At most stations, one can keep their luggage for up to a month in these cloak rooms and lockers.

The policy decision also says that a trial run is being planned in identified A1 or class A stations where space will be provided by railways for a licensing fee to the successful bidder to run the service.

“The successful bidder may be allowed fixed escalation in charges on a yearly basis,” said the document detailing the outsourcing plans of the railways’ cloak rooms and lockers issued earlier this month.

Skincare tips for women above 40

After 40, it is very important for a woman to choose the right skin care regime and make-up.

IANS | New Delhi |

After 40, it is very important for a woman to choose the right skin care regime and make-up. Always hydrate your skin before applying the foundation and opt for peach or pink blush, say experts.

Make-up artists Bhumika Bahri and Niti Luthra have listed down some techniques for women above the age of 40.

* Skincare as an investment: Investing in good skin care routine is the first step towards enhancing your skin. As we touch 40 our skin becomes dry and wrinkles start to appear. A good moisturizer and anti-aging serum will revive your skin.

* Prep and prime: The skin should be prepped properly for an even base. Primer plays an important role for a lesser base. Use concealer and contouring for a defined base.

* Balanced skin tone: Foundation with hydrating formulas work best after 40 as the skin becomes thin and makes the complexion dull. The hydrating foundation brings back the colour of the skin. Liquid formulas work best as it will not settle in the fine lines. Warm colours and yellow undertones balance the skin tone.

30 minutes facial exercise daily can make you look younger
* Peach or pink blush: Women above 40 years of age are advised to use peach and pink blush to add colour to their skin. It will add a natural healthy glow to the cheekbones.

eyes, fashion, festival season, stylish

*Enhance your eyes: Eyeshadows should be of warm tones. Using matte browns or neutral toned eyeshadows would define the eyes. Use Kohl or gel eyeliner along with mascara to give a softer look.

LIPS

*Fuller lips: As we age our lips become thin and dry. Using lip liner would give fuller lip effect. Matte lipsticks with a dab of gloss in the center will give plumpness to the lips. Light and bright shades should be used as per the skin tone.

Govt plans to auction ‘enemy’ properties worth Rs 1 lakh crore

PTI | New Delhi |

Over 9,400 ‘enemy’ properties, worth more than Rs 1 lakh crore, are set to be auctioned by the home ministry starting the process of identifying all such estates, officials said.

The properties were left behind by people who took citizenship of Pakistan and China.

The move came after the amendment of the 49-year-old Enemy Property (Amendment and Validation) Act which ensured that the heirs of those who migrated to Pakistan and China during Partition and afterwards will have no claim over the properties left behind in India.

At a recent meeting, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh was informed that the survey of 6,289 enemy properties has been completed and that of the remaining 2,991 properties which are vested with the custodian will be completed, a home ministry official told PTI.

Singh directed that those properties which are free from encumbrance should be disposed of quickly for monetisation.

The estimated value of these 9,400 properties is around Rs 1 lakh crore and when they are sold off, it would be a huge windfall for the government, another official said.

Similar properties in Pakistan belonging to Indians have already been disposed of.

Nodal officers are being appointed by state governments to coordinate identification, vesting and valuation of enemy properties, the official said.

Among the 9,280 properties left behind by Pakistani nationals, the highest 4,991 properties are located in Uttar Pradesh followed by West Bengal which has 2,735 such estates.

There are 487 such properties in Delhi.

Among the 126 properties left behind by Chinese nationals, the highest 57 are located in Meghalaya followed by West Bengal with 29. Assam has seven such properties.

According to the new Act, ‘enemy property’ refers to any property belonging to, held or managed on behalf of an enemy, an enemy subject or an enemy firm.

The government has vested these properties in the Custodian of Enemy Property for India, an office instituted under the central government.

After the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965, the Enemy Property Act was enacted in 1968, which regulates such properties and lists the custodian’s powers.

The government amended the Act in the wake of a claim laid by the heirs of Raja Mohammad Amir Mohammad Khan, known as Raja of Mahmudabad, on his properties spread across Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Prithvi Shaw hits 94 as top-order fires India to 328/7 against Aussies

The splendid top-order batting vindicated Shaw’s decision to bat in their tournament-opener.

PTI |

Skipper Prithvi Shaw led from the front with a 94-run knock and shared a 180-run stand with fellow opener Manjot Kalra (86) to power India to a challenging 328 for seven against Australia in their ICC Under-19 World Cup match, here today.

The splendid top-order batting vindicated Shaw’s decision to bat in their tournament-opener.

There was no respite for the Australian bowlers even after departure of Shaw and Kalra with Shubhman Gill tormenting the bowlers with his 63-run knock.

It was not that Shaw and Klara plundered boundaries, instead they raised their knocks with some stupendous risk- free batting.

Shaw, though, missed out on a century by six runs as he was caught behind off Will Sutherland, son of former Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland.

The Indian captain faced 100 balls and scored eight boundaries, including two sixes in his knock.

His opening partner also missed out on a ton, falling for 86 which came off 99 balls with 12 shots to the fence and on over the ropes.

There were no steady partnerships after their departure even as Gill kept one end solid with his 54-ball knock which had six fours and a six.

The middle order batsmen lost their wickets, trying to accelerate the run-rate as Himanshu Rana (14) and Anukul Roy (6) fell cheaply.

Abhishek Sharma though managed to come up with a 8-ball 23-run cameo which propelled India past the 300-run mark. he hit two sixes and as many fours.

As Indian batsmen looked for some quick runs, Australian medium fast bowler Jack Edwards ended up taking four wickets.

It was Edwards, who dismissed Rana and then later added wickets of Abhishek and Shiva Singh (10) to his tally.

India can test our resolve: Pakistan issues challenge on nuclear war

SNS | New Delhi |

In a response to Indian Army chief General Bipin Rawat’s remarks, Pakistan’s foreign minister Khawaja Asif on Saturday challenged India to test Pakistan’s resolve over a nuclear war.

In a tweet, Asif wrote, “Very irresponsible statement by Indian Army Chief, not befitting his office. Amounts to invitation for nuclear encounter. If that is what they desire, they are welcome to test our resolve. The general’s doubt would swiftly be removed, inshallah.”

Army Chief Rawat on Friday had said that the Indian force was ready to call Pakistan’s “nuclear bluff”.

“We will call the (nuclear) bluff of Pakistan. If we will have to really confront the Pakistanis, and a task is given to us, we are not going to say we cannot cross the border because they have nuclear weapons. We will have to call their nuclear bluff,” Gen. Rawat had said in a response to a question during a press conference on possibility of Pakistan using its nuclear weapons in case the situation along the border deteriorates.

After Asif, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesperson Dr Mohammad Faisal took to Twitter and said “The threatening and irresponsible statement by the Indian Army Chief today is representative of a sinister mindset that has taken hold of India. Pakistan has demonstrated deterrence capability.”

“These are not issues to be taken lightly. There must not be any misadventure based on miscalculation. Pakistan is fully capable of defending itself,” he added.

Kshatriya women threaten ‘jauhar’ if ‘Padmaavat’ release not stopped

IANS | Jaipur/Chittorgarh |

In a new twist to the ongoing controversy over release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie “Padmaavat“, female members of Kshatriya community in Chittorgarh on Saturday threatened to perform “jauhar” (self-immolation) if the screening of the film is not stopped by the government.

In a Sarvasamaj meeting held in Chittaurgarh, the members decided to stage a phase-wise protest against the proposed release of film. The meeting was attended by around 500 people, out of which 100 females belonged to high-profile families of the city.

Speaking to IANS, spokesperson of Rajput Karni Sena Virendra Singh said on January 17, national highways and railway tracks across Chittorgarh would be blocked.

The film, already cleared by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) after five modifications and renamed from “Padmavati” to “Padmavat” and now titled “Padmaavat“, is scheduled to release on January 25 across India. The Rajasthan government has, however, decided against releasing it in the state.

On Sunday, a delegation of the Sena will meet Rajnath Singh, who is scheduled to visit Udaipur, requesting him to stop the screening of the movie across India.

According to Virendra Singh, a representative board will also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 16, who is scheduled to visit Pachpadra village in Barmer district for laying the foundation stone for a refinery project.

“A request will be made to him as well to stop the screening of the film,” he said.

“But, if despite all these measures the film is released, the women of Kshatriya Samaj will perform jauhar on January 24 — the day when the queen performed jauhar — and at the same site,” said Virendra Singh.

Chhittaurgarh Jauhar Smriti Sansthan general secretary Bhanwar Singh said that preparations were also being made to close the gates of the historical Chittorgarh fort once again.

Earlier, the Sena had planned a protest on January 25 and 26, but in the wake of Republic Day celebrations, the protest was rescheduled to January 17, Virendra Singh added.

Ashwin basks after helping India contain S. Africa on Day 1

Ravichandran Ashwin took four wickets in the final session to show the team’s intent of making a strong comeback.

IANS | Centurion |

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was delighted after his three wickets helped India reduce South Africa to 269/6 in their first innings on the first day of the second Test match here on Saturday.

Aiden Markram (94) and Hashim Amla (82) threatened India with signs of a prospective big total. But India’s bowling unit, spearheaded by Ashwin (3/90), took four wickets in the final session to show the team’s intent of making a strong comeback after the defeat in the opening Test in Cape Town.

The Tamil Nadu tweaker accounted for openers Markram and Dean Algar (31) and Quinton de Kock (0) to peg the hosts back. Hardik Pandya then effected two run-outs of Amla and Vernon Philander as India came back strongly into the game.

“I like to think I have kept us in the game. It could have so easily been a game where they could have run away with it after the second session. I like to believe I was just dogged enough,” Ashwin said at the post-match press conference.

“Within my mind, this was probably one of the relaxed days of my cricket career. I wasn’t really thinking too much and delivering the ball. My only intent was to try and keep it in a particular spot. Try and deliver from different positions in the crease, and I was really enjoying it,” he added.

“Those wickets in the last session are valid incentive for us going into the Day 2. It was due to extraordinary work from Hardik. New ball is not doing a lot actually. If those two batsmen walked out tomorrow morning, it would have been tougher for us.”

Ashwin revealed that the team was thinking of going with an all-seam attack having seen the wicket two days before the match started. But the curator reduced the greenish part of the wicket, giving Ashwin the chance to play the match.

“Two days from the game it looked like we are going to play an all-seam attack. And then when we walked into the ground yesterday, it was white in colour and the grass was coming off,” Ashwin said.

“All of a sudden I really had to pull myself back and think I am in the game now. Today morning when we came to the ground, it looked like a wicket that was really flat and had to have a spinner in the game. I am happy with the wicket.”

Emmanuel Macron calls for preserving Iranian nuclear deal

IANS | Paris |

French President Emmanuel Macron has recalled “the importance of preserving the Iranian nuclear agreement, and the necessary respect by all parties of their commitments under this agreement” in a telephone talk with Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

A press release published by the French presidency said this on Saturday, Xinhua news agency reported.

The French presidency added that Macron and Netanyahu “also referred to the subject of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process in the continuity of their exchanges of December 10”.

This phone talk came after an ultimatum issued by US President Donald Trump to the Europeans to tighten in the coming months the terms of the agreement reached in 2015 between Iran and the major powers if they want to avoid Washington’s withdrawal from the deal.

The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday criticised the fresh sanctions imposed by the US by calling them illegal and hostile and warned that they would receive a serious reaction by the Islamic republic.

The US Treasury on Friday announced sanctions on 14 Iranian individuals and entities, including the head of Iran’s judiciary, Sadeq Larijani, for human rights abuses and supporting Tehran’s ballistic missile programme.

On Friday, US President Donald Trump opted to extend sanctions relief provided to Iran as part of the 2015 nuclear deal but he warned European allies that he would pull out of the pact unless its “terrible flaws” are corrected.

Ind vs SA 2nd Test: South Africa pegged back by late Indian bowling show

Indian pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma and Harik Pandya operated with probing line and length.

IANS |

India fought back late to reduce South Africa to 269 for six wickets in their first innings on the opening day of the second cricket Test at the SuperSport Park here on Saturday.

Aiden Markram (94) and Hashim Amla (82) threatened India with signs of a prospective big total. But India’s bowling unit, spearheaded by off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (3/90), took four wickets in the final session to show the team’s intent of making a strong comeback after the defeat in the opening Test in Cape Town.

Captain Faf du Plessis (24 batting) and Keshav Maharaj (10 batting) were at the crease at the end of the day’s play.

Du Plessis earlier in the morning won the toss and elected to bat on a bouncy wicket with less seam and swing as compared to the Newlands wicket in the first Test.

Opening batsmen Markram and Dean Elgar (31) justified the skipper’s decision with sensible batting. They stitched together a 85-run partnership to give a good start to the hosts.

Indian pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma and Harik Pandya operated with probing line and length.

Ishant replaced Bhuvneshwar Kumar for this match, while injured glovesman Wriddhiman Saha made way for Parthiv Patel. Another change was Lokesh Rahul replacing Shikhar Dhawan.

Mohammed Shami disappointed by bowling fully-pitched deliveries though Pandya rose up to the challenge got more overs to bowl than the former.

The 23-year-old right-hander Markram was particularly impressive, registering his second Test fifty which had 14 fours.

When South Africa were 61/0, India sought a review after the umpire turned down a caught behind appeal against Elgar off off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. But the umpire’s decision remained with the snickometer giving no sign of the ball kissing the bat.

Markram was the aggressor, while Elgar batted with steely resolve and backed his defensive techniques to the hilt as the hosts reached 78/0 till the lunch session.

Elgar fell three overs into the second session. The experienced left-hander stepped out of the crease but his uppish drive to a rising delivery from Ashwin went to close-in fielder Murali Vijay.

But an unflustered Markram joined hands with Amla and the pair continued to control the Indian bowlers. Markram even though fell six runs short of his third career century in five game, gave a good accout of his talent. He was in a punishing mood but with a sensible approach.

He dealt with disdain whenever the Indian pace bowlers erred in line and length and was also good against Ashwin.

Ashwin moved round the wicket to force a faint edge of the 23-year-old’s bat for an easy catch for Parthiv, bringing an end to a 67-run stand.

Gujarat wicket-keeper Parthiv later, however, dropped a half chance on Amla when he was batting on 30. Amla went after Ishant’s wide delivery on the leg stump but coulnd’t connect it properly. A fully stretched Parthiv dived to the left but the ball evaded his left hand.

The dropped catch proved costly as the veteran right-hander went on to add another 52 runs.

The third session was fruitful for the Indians as they claimed the key wickets of Amla, AB de Villiers (20).

De Villiers chopped a delivery from paceman Ishant on to his stumps, with the hosts at 199/3.

Amla was settling in nicely for a big knock, playing a crafty knock until a direct throw from Pandya led to his dismissal as South Africa lost their fourth wicket for 246 runs. Amla controlled a short delivery from Pandya to the short leg before running for a single. Pandya collected the ball and threw directly at the non-striker’s end to catch Amla short of the crease. It was quite a big wicket considering Amla is known for playing big knocks and to see him back rejuvenated the Indians.

In the very next over, Quinton de Kock (0) was caught at slip by Virat Kohli off Ashwin.

Trusted lower-order batsman Vernon Philander ran himself out due to a mix-up with du Plessis. After playing a Pandya delivery towards the short midwicket, Philander ran towards the other end without a confirmed approval from du Plessis. Pandya collected the ball and threw at wicket-keeper Parthiv, who did the rest to dismiss Philander.

Afterwards, du Plessis and Maharaj held the fort as South Africa reached 269/6.
