RBI Deputy Governor calls for agile, risk-based regulation in digital era

Delivering a special address at the 3rd Annual Global Conference of the College of Supervisors in Mumbai, Murmu noted that while digitalisation has improved efficiency, transparency, competition, and access to financial services, it has also introduced new and complex risks that can spread rapidly across interconnected systems.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Deputy Governor Shirish Chandra Murmu Tuesday, highlighted the rapid transformation of the financial ecosystem driven by digitalisation, and said regulators must adopt agile, forward-looking, and risk-based approaches to safeguard financial stability while enabling innovation.

He cautioned that machine-speed transactions, automated decision-making, and always-on digital services have compressed response times for regulators, increasing the potential for operational failures, cyber incidents, fraud, and sudden loss of confidence.

According to him, traditional regulatory frameworks built around periodic reporting and post-facto action must evolve towards proactive detection and timely intervention without compromising regulatory judgment.

The RBI DG pointed out that digital finance has blurred regulatory boundaries, with financial services increasingly being delivered through non-financial platforms involving both regulated and unregulated entities.

This fragmentation, he said, often leaves no single authority with a complete view of risks across the activity chain, increasing the scope for regulatory arbitrage domestically and across borders.

On the nature of regulation, the Deputy Governor observed that overly prescriptive rules risk becoming obsolete as technology evolves, while purely principle-based regulation can lead to uneven application if governance is weak. He advocated a balanced approach combining clarity with flexibility, supported by strong supervision and enforcement.

Addressing financial stability concerns, Murmu flagged emerging systemic risks from increased reliance on cloud services, algorithms, and third-party technology providers.

He stressed that accountability for technological outcomes must remain firmly with regulated entities, even when operations are outsourced or automated.

He also highlighted cyber threats, data integrity issues, and the rapid spread of misinformation as growing challenges in the digital age, underscoring the need for strong operational resilience and clear regulatory communication to maintain public trust.

At the same time, the RBI DG said digitalisation offers regulators powerful tools to enhance supervision.

He cited RBI initiatives such as MuleHunter.ai for detecting mule accounts, the PRAVAAH portal for digital regulatory services, and DAKSH, an end-to-end supervisory workflow system, as examples of how technology can improve risk monitoring while reducing compliance burden.

Compassion limited to animals, not humans? SC questions attitude of those feeding stray dogs in public places

During the hearing, the apex court raised a pointed query on accountability, asking who should be held responsible if a nine-year-old child is killed in a stray dog attack.

IANS | New Delhi |

The Supreme Court on Tuesday questioned the attitude of people and organisations that feed stray dogs in public places, asking whether their compassion is limited to animals and not extended to humans.

During the hearing, the apex court raised a pointed query on accountability, asking who should be held responsible if a nine-year-old child is killed in a stray dog attack.

“Shouldn’t organisations that advocate feeding stray dogs in public places also be held accountable?” the court asked.

Senior Advocate Arvind Datar submitted that the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules are primarily aimed at birth control and that even their full implementation would not completely eliminate the risk of dog attacks. He added that the ABC rules do not adequately address the issue of aggressive stray dogs.

Recalling its previous hearing on January 8, the bench noted the poor implementation of the ABC Rules and had also cautioned dog lovers on their responsibilities. At that hearing, the court’s observation that dogs can smell fear in humans before attacking had gone viral. The court clarified that it had never directed the removal of all street dogs but had only emphasised their humane treatment in accordance with the ABC Rules.

The court further observed that stray dogs can carry specific viruses and that when such dogs are attacked and eaten by wild animals like tigers, they can transmit diseases such as canine distemper, which may eventually lead to the death of the infected animals.

Senior Advocate Vikas Singh argued that the issue should not be reduced to a dog-versus-human debate, but viewed more broadly as an animal-versus-human conflict.

He pointed out that around 50,000 people die every year due to snake bites and that incidents of monkey attacks are also reported. Singh added that dogs play a role in controlling rat populations and that maintaining ecological balance is essential.

Senior Advocate Menaka Guruswamy contended that killing stray dogs would not reduce their population, and that sterilisation is the only effective solution.

“If regulators had done their job properly, we would not be facing this situation today,” she said, adding that organisations working on the ground should be adequately funded. She also alleged that several programme centres are failing to properly utilise the funds allocated to them.

A woman who was herself a victim of a dog attack also addressed the court, expressing her belief that proper implementation of the ABC programme would help reduce both aggression and the stray dog population. She said she was bitten by a community dog without any apparent provocation and wanted to understand the reason behind such behaviour.

“The dog had been subjected to cruelty for a long time. It was kicked and stoned. This was defensive aggression triggered by fear,” she said, adding that cruelty towards otherwise friendly community dogs instils fear, which eventually manifests as aggression. She emphasised that she had suffered due to the actions of others.

The Supreme Court has been hearing the matter as a suo motu case since July last year.

Will India also pay the price for Trump’s Iran-related tariff?

‘’Effective immediately, any country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a tariff of 25% on any and all business being done with the United States of America. This order is final and conclusive,’’ President Trump wrote on ‘X’, creating fresh economic troubles for the Islamic nation, which is witnessing large-scale anti-government protests.

Ashok Tuteja | New Delhi |

There is an intense speculation in diplomatic circles in New Delhi on how US President Donald Trump’s latest action of imposing a 25 per cent tariff on any country doing business with Iran will impact India’s bilateral trade with the Islamic nation with which New Delhi has enjoyed long-standing civilisational and commercial ties.

Trade observers in New Delhi said President Trump’s move is likely to have a cascading impact on India’s trade with Iran since India is a major exporter to the Islamic nation. Indian exports to the US have already come down considerably in the wake of the punitive 50 per cent tariffs imposed by President Trump for buying Russian oil. A further 25 per cent tariff on Indian products, should it continue to trade with Iran, will take the duty on Indian products to the US to 75 per cent.

All this comes at a time when the US is already considering a bill that proposes to impose 500 per cent tariffs on countries continuing to purchase Russian oil despite sanctions. If the legislation is passed, the demand for Indian products in the US will come down drastically and reduce the volume of Indian exports further. Although India and the US have been negotiating a bilateral trade agreement since February last year, talks between the two sides have failed to make much headway due to differences over key issues.

India has strong trade links with Iran, including energy imports and the development of the crucial Chabahar Port that provides India a direct transport link to Afghanistan and Central Asia, bypassing Pakistan.

According to the Indian Embassy in Tehran, India and Iran are important trade partners. India has been among Iran’s five largest trade partners in recent years.

Major Indian exports to Iran include rice, tea, sugar, pharmaceuticals, man-made staple fibres, electrical machinery, and artificial jewellery, while major Indian imports from Iran consist of dry fruits, inorganic/organic chemicals, glassware, etc.

India’s trade with Iran has lately come down in view of the crippling sanctions imposed on the Islamic nation by the US and some other Western nations.

India could also find it difficult to continue to invest in the Chabahar Port in light of the latest step against the Islamic Republic by Washington. The US administration has in the past permitted limited exemptions for Chabahar as it is meant for providing humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan; it is to be seen whether the new tariff regime that President Trump has announced for Iran will have an impact on this key port too.

Yash’s ‘Toxic’ teaser faces obscenity allegations; Karnataka Women’s Commission writes to CBFC after AAP complaint

Yash’s upcoming film ‘Toxic’ has sparked controversy in Karnataka after the AAP alleged that its teaser contains obscene and explicit scenes harmful to women and children. Acting on the complaint, the Karnataka Women’s Commission has written to the CBFC seeking appropriate action.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

The internet barely had time to finish wishing Yash a happy birthday when his ‘Toxic’ teaser landed him in hot water. The drama has now moved from social media to official government offices. Yes, even before ‘Toxic’ hits theatres, it has already become one of the most talked-about films of the year, and not just for cinematic reasons.

About ‘Toxic’ teaser

On January 8, Yash celebrated his 40th birthday by giving fans a special gift, the teaser of his upcoming film ‘Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups’. The teaser introduced him as a character named Raya and marked his first project after the massive success of ‘KGF: Chapter 2’ in 2022.

Fans were excited. The teaser went viral within hours. But along with cheers came sharp criticism. Some viewers, especially political and social groups, alleged that certain scenes in the teaser were obscene and sexually explicit.

Women’s Commission steps in against ‘Toxic’

The Karnataka State Women’s Commission (KSWC) has now officially entered the matter. On Monday, the commission wrote to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) asking it to take “appropriate action” after receiving complaints against the teaser.

The commission’s secretary sent a letter to the CBFC, referring to a petition filed by Usha Mohan, the Karnataka state secretary of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The letter requested the board to verify the complaint as per rules and submit a report on action.

In simple words, the Women’s Commission wants the CBFC to look closely at the teaser and decide if it breaks any rules.

AAP women’s wing raises serious concerns

Before the letter, leaders from the women’s wing of AAP’s Karnataka unit personally met officials of the Women’s Commission. They submitted a complaint demanding immediate action.

In her petition, Usha Mohan alleged that the teaser contains “obscene and explicit content” that harms the social well-being of women and children. She claimed that the teaser was released publicly without any age warning, making it easily accessible to minors.

According to the complaint, the scenes not only degrade the dignity of women but also insult Kannada culture. The party urged authorities to take strong steps including banning the teaser and removing it from social media platforms.

The petition clearly stated that the issue should be treated seriously to protect the cultural and moral values of the state.

Activist files separate complaint to CBFC

The controversy did not stop there. Social activist Dinesh Kallahalli also filed a formal complaint directly with the CBFC. He addressed the complaint to CBFC chairperson Prasoon Joshi.

Kallahalli described the teaser as “grossly obscene, sexually explicit, and vulgar in nature.” He expressed concern that the teaser is being widely shared on social media without any restrictions exposing children and young people to content he believes is legally and morally unacceptable.

He argued that such content crosses the limits of freedom of speech and expression guaranteed by the Constitution.

In his complaint, Kallahalli referred to the Cinematograph Act, 1952, the Certification of Films Rules, and CBFC guidelines. He said that all films and promotional material must meet standards of decency, morality, and social responsibility.

He also cited Supreme Court judgments, stating that obscenity and sexually explicit material are not protected under constitutional freedom of expression. According to him, the teaser of ‘Toxic’ goes beyond acceptable limits and therefore should not receive any protection.

What the ‘Toxic’ makers have released so far

So far, the makers of ‘Toxic’ have only released a brief teaser and first look. The film director is filmmaker Geetu Mohandas. They have shot it simultaneously in Kannada and English with dubbed versions planned in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and other languages.

The project is ambitious and marks Yash’s big return after ‘KGF: Chapter 2’, which raised expectations sky-high.

Centre persuades delivery aggregators to take down mandatory 10-minute delivery deadline

A meeting was held with leading platforms, including Blinkit, Zepto, Zomato, and Swiggy, among others, to address concerns related to delivery timelines.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Coming as a major relief to the gig workers, Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has persuaded major delivery aggregators to remove the mandatory 10-minute delivery deadline.

A meeting was held with leading platforms, including Blinkit, Zepto, Zomato, and Swiggy, among others, to address concerns related to delivery timelines.

As per the reports, quick commerce firms, such as Blinkit and Zepto, have voluntarily decided to halt 10-minute delivery claims after Minister Mandaviya raised the issue.

Blinkit’s principal tagline has been revised from “10,000 plus products delivered in 10 minutes” to “30,000 plus products delivered at your doorstep.”

The development comes after the delivery workers staged a nationwide strike on New Year’s Eve 2025. They protested the physical strain, safety risks, and income instability caused by aggressive delivery timelines and said the race to meet 10-minute targets was pushing them to take risks on the road while also limiting their ability to earn fairly.

Reacting to the protests, Eternal Group CEO Deepinder Goyal had defended the delivery model, saying it does not encourage unsafe driving.

He had said the delivery partners are not shown customer-facing delivery timers on their apps and are not under direct pressure to meet the 10-minute promise.

Welcoming Mandaviya’s move, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha called it a win for gig workers, saying, “Satyamev Jayate. Together, we have won”.

“This is a much-needed step because when “10 minutes” is printed on a rider’s t-shirt/ jacket/ bag and a timer runs on the customer’s screen, the pressure is real, constant, and dangerous. This step will help ensure the safety of the delivery riders and everyone who shares our roads,” he said.

“This step will help ensure the safety of the delivery riders and everyone who shares our roads. Over the past months, I have spoken to hundreds of delivery partners. Many are overworked, underpaid, and risking their lives to fulfill an unrealistic promise. I thank every citizen who stood with us – you stood firmly on the side of human life, safety & dignity. And to every gig worker – you’re not alone, we’re all with you,” he said in a post on social media platform X.

Notably, during the Parliament session, Chadha had demanded regulations for quick commerce and other app-based delivery and service businesses, emphasising the need for social security benefits for gig workers.

The definitions of gig workers and platform workers and provisions related to the same have been provided in the Code on Social Security, 2020, coming into force on November 21, 2025.

The Code provides for framing of suitable social security measures for gig workers and platform workers on matters relating to life and disability cover, accident insurance, health and maternity benefits, old age protection, among others.

Notably, the Ministry of Labour and Employment had also launched the e-Shram portal in 2021 for the creation of a Comprehensive National Database of Unorganised Workers, including platform workers and migrant workers.

Rahul Gandhi Accuses I&B Ministry of Suppressing Tamil Culture Over Film ‘Jana Nayagan’

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday condemned the Information and Broadcasting Ministry’s move to block the film ‘Jana Nayagan,’ describing it as an assault on Tamil culture.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday condemned the Information and Broadcasting Ministry’s move to block the film ‘Jana Nayagan,’ describing it as an assault on Tamil culture. Posting on handle X, Gandhi stated, “The I&B Ministry’s attempt to block ‘Jana Nayagan’ is an attack on Tamil culture. Mr Modi, you will never succeed in silencing the voice of the Tamil people.”

The Ministry had reportedly taken steps to withhold clearance for the film, citing issues related to certification and content guidelines. Additionally, it requested YouTube to remove the film’s trailer, pointing to certain scenes considered objectionable.

Gandhi’s comments come amid continuing tensions between the central government and Tamil Nadu state authorities on various matters. His statement is viewed as a gesture of support for the Tamil community and a defence of their cultural identity.

‘Looking forward to build rocket missile force, ready to expand drone range’: Army Chief lays out action plan

The Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi today hinted at India’s plans to establish a missile force comprising long-range rockets, citing the growing need of the hour.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

The Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi today hinted at India’s plans to establish a missile force comprising long-range rockets, citing the growing need of the hour. While addressing a press conference in Delhi, the Indian Army Chief said that the country is looking forward to building its own rocket missile force to keep up to speed with the evolving security dynamics.

General Upendra Dwivedi said, “We need a missile force. Today, you will see that rockets and missiles have become intertwined because if we want to achieve an impact, both rockets and missiles can deliver it. We are looking towards a rocket missile force because, as you know, Pakistan has established a rocket force, and China has also created such a force. It is the need of the hour that we also establish such a force.”

Making a mention about the successful testing of the Pinaka system, Pralay and BrahMos, the COAS said, “We have also signed several other contracts that will explore ranges up to 150 km and later we will see it reaching a range of 300-450 km.”

The Army Chief further briefed the media about the Indian Army’s decision to manufacture as many drones as possible. He said, “Every command of the Indian Army can either make or has already manufactured 5,000 drones. These are not small drones. We have test-fired drones up to a range of around 100 km, and we are going to increase the range as well…”

‘Satisfied with progress in 2025’

During his address, the Chief of the Army Staff also expressed satisfaction over the capability development and infrastructure enhancement in the field of security in 2025 by India.

The Army chief said that through multiple initiatives as part of ‘JAI — Jointness, Aatmanirbhar, Innovation’, a clarion call given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 2025, a year of reforms given by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in January 2025, and the Indian Army’s own decade of transformation, “we can be justifiably very satisfied with the progress made during the year 2025.”

Passenger Vehicle dispatches rise 27% in December 2025: SIAM

Passenger vehicle dispatches from manufacturers to dealers rose 27 per cent year-on-year in December 2025, driven by strong demand for utility vehicles, industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) said on Tuesday.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Passenger vehicle dispatches from manufacturers to dealers rose 27 per cent year-on-year in December 2025, driven by strong demand for utility vehicles, industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) said on Tuesday.

Total passenger vehicle sales stood at 3,99,216 units in December, compared with 3,14,934 units in the same month last year, registering a growth of 26.8 per cent.

Two-wheeler dispatches to dealers also recorded a sharp increase, rising 39 per cent year-on-year to 15,41,036 units last month, as against 11,05,565 units in December 2024, according to a SIAM statement.

Sales of three-wheelers increased by 17 per cent to 61,924 units in December, compared with 52,733 units in the year-ago period.

SIAM said the automobile industry has entered the fourth quarter of FY2025-26 with strong momentum, following robust double-digit growth across all vehicle segments in the latter part of 2025. The sector anticipates steady growth in both wholesale and retail volumes throughout the quarter.

SIAM noted that the year-end sales push, a healthy pipeline of bookings, and the full transmission of interest rate cuts announced in 2025 on vehicle loans are likely to support demand. These factors are expected to drive continued growth into FY2025-26, backed by stable macroeconomic conditions and supportive policy reforms by the Government of India.

“While remaining watchful of geopolitical developments, the industry expects FY2025-26 to close on a positive growth trajectory, with policy-led tailwinds firmly in place, sustaining the robust performance witnessed in recent years,” the industry body said.

UP MLA Abbas Ansari granted regular bail by Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted regular bail to Uttar Pradesh MLA Abbas Ansari in a case registered against him under the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act.

IANS | New Delhi |

The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted regular bail to Uttar Pradesh MLA Abbas Ansari in a case registered against him under the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act.

Abbas Ansari is the elder son of late gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari and represents the Mau Sadar Assembly constituency.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant made absolute the interim bail earlier granted to Ansari, noting that there had been no allegation of misuse of the concession during the period he remained on interim bail.

“In such circumstances, and without expressing any opinion on the merits of the case, the interim order is made absolute and the petition stands disposed of,” the court observed.

While granting regular bail, the apex court directed that Ansari must strictly comply with all the conditions earlier imposed at the time of granting interim relief.

He has been permitted to travel outside Uttar Pradesh, but only after informing the trial court as well as the local police authorities in advance.

The court also mandated that he provide his contact number along with complete details of his travel destination.

Earlier, in September 2025, the Supreme Court had relaxed his bail conditions. Ansari was required to stay at the official accommodation allotted to him in Lucknow.

Separately, in September last year, the membership of Abbas Ansari in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly was also restored after the Allahabad High Court stayed his jail sentence in the case.

Abbas Ansari had been accused of delivering a hate speech during the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. He allegedly made provocative remarks at a public meeting, warning government officials that he would “settle scores and teach them a lesson” once the Samajwadi Party came to power.

Mukhtar Ansari, who wielded considerable political influence in eastern Uttar Pradesh for decades, had represented the Mau region multiple times. Abbas Ansari, carrying forward his political legacy, won the Mau Sadar seat in the 2022 Assembly elections.

Different vibes, same impact: Smriti Mandhana and Harris applaud each other after big win in WPL

Following the win, a playful interaction between RCB captain Smriti Mandhana and Player of the Match Grace Harris, shared by the official WPL X handle, caught fans’ attention.

Neha Buswal | New Delhi |

Royal Challengers Bengaluru registered a dominant nine-wicket win over UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 on January 12, producing a commanding all-round performance.

Following the win, a playful interaction between RCB captain Smriti Mandhana and Player of the Match Grace Harris, shared by the official WPL X handle, caught fans’ attention. Captioned “Introvert, Extrovert – Different vibes, same impact”, the clip highlighted the contrasting personalities of the two batters and their chemistry during the chase.

The video begins with Harris jokingly calling herself an extrovert, while Mandhana embraces her introverted nature. Reflecting on Harris’ blistering knock, Mandhana said she had the “best seat in the house” during the chase.

“I didn’t have to do anything. I just had to get her on strike. Not just one over – she was whacking every over. It’s easy to bat when someone gets going like that. And they weren’t just sixes; they were long sixes. It was a treat to watch,” Mandhana said.

Harris, in turn, praised Mandhana’s calm presence at the crease.

“It’s very easy batting with Smriti because she is so calm and classy. When you bat with her, she’s elegant, free-flowing and technically correct, so you don’t feel like you need to overhit the ball,” Harris said.

Harris’ explosive 85 off 40 balls was the centrepiece of RCB’s chase, after the bowlers had first restricted UP Warriorz to 143/5. Nadine de Klerk (2/28) and Lauren Bell (1/16) delivered disciplined spells to set the platform.

Mandhana later explained the team’s decision to promote Harris to open the innings.

“We had a brief discussion about the batting order. She plays in the middle order for Australia but opens for Brisbane Heat. We were very clear how dangerous she can be up front. If she gets going, it almost takes the match away from the opposition,” Mandhana said.

She also lauded Bell’s impact with the new ball.

“In the first three overs, she just didn’t let anyone touch the ball. Giving six overs for 30-odd runs is how you want to start the bowling innings when you win the toss,” Mandhana added.

Accepting the Player of the Match award, Harris said she was enjoying her role and time with RCB.

“I’ve always enjoyed the WPL. It’s a great set-up and I’m really loving life at the moment. I thought I’d be facing an older ball, but our coach Malolan Rangarajan told me I might open, and I just thought – how good,” Harris said.

Former India captain Mithali Raj also applauded Harris’ match-winning blitz during commentary.

“Grace Harris set the tone right from Deepti Sharma’s first over. Her timing was impeccable, and the power behind every shot was unreal. At one point, even we wondered what line or length could stop her,” Mithali said on JioStar.

RCB eventually chased down the target in just 12.1 overs, underlining their dominance and sending a strong message early in the WPL 2026 season.

Analysts warned that the cap could wipe out billions in industry profits and curb lending. Payments firms Visa and Mastercard, though they don’t issue credit cards, felt the impact, as they relied on fees generated when consumers use their products.

President Trump has set a January 20 deadline for companies to comply or face being “in violation of the law,” and warned of “very severe things” for firms that do not lower rates to 10 per cent.

“I want a cap on credit card interest rates because some of them are 28 — almost 30 per cent. People don’t know they’re paying 30 per cent (credit card interest rates),” Trump said.

“The people out there are working, and they have no idea that they’re paying 30 per cent. We are putting a one-year cap at 10 per cent and they know it. They (credit card companies) have really abused the public. I am not going to let it happen,” the US President said last week.

Though industry groups including the Bank Policy Institute and the Consumer Bankers Association endorsed the goal of more affordable credit, they warned a 10 per cent cap would impact credit availability and harm consumers and small businesses that rely on cards, according to multiple reports.

Analysts noted that implementing the cap would require new legislation from Congress, and is unlikely given the strength of the banking industry’s lobbying power in Congress.

Trump’s announcement comes at a time as the US heads for its midterm election, following his comments to Republican aides of possible impeachment, if the midterm polls in November are lost.

‘Air strikes, missile attack, cyber operation, psychological campaign’: Options before Trump on Iran

The Pentagon is reported to have listed before President Trump multiple options for attacking Iran, including pointed strikes on parts of its nuclear programme.

As anti-regime protests continue to rage in Iran, some important developments are happening in the United States.

Two separate reports have claimed that President Donald Trump, who has warned the Iranian regime against killing protesters, has been presented with options on the Middle Eastern country.

The reports came as an unidentified American official was reported as saying that an attack is possibly “a few days away”.

What the New York Times reported

The Pentagon is reported to have listed before President Trump multiple options for attacking Iran, including pointed strikes on parts of its nuclear programme.

The leading American daily quoted a “senior source” as saying that a cyberattack or a strike against Iran’s internal security apparatus are among the options that the Trump administration is exploring. The source added that action against Iran is possibly “a few days away”.

This came as other officials reported Trump to be exploring diplomatic avenues as well.

Iran protests: Donald Trump says Tehran reached out for talks; internet shutdown continues, 544 deaths reported

CBS News said this

CBS News, meanwhile, said the options presented before President Trump include a wide range of military and covert tools other than conventional air strikes.

Two unidentified Defence Department officials told CBS News that while air strikes and missile attacks remain key parts of any action against the Iranian regime, a cyber operation and psychological campaign could also be used to interfere with Iranian command structures, communication and state media.

There is also an option to use covert tools along with a conventional attack, including using the military.

However, no final decision seems to have been taken yet and a key meeting of Trump’s national security team is due today at the White House.

Trump has been issuing warnings to Iran for weeks now, saying he will be forced to intervene if the Iranian security forces continue to kill people protesting against the oppressive regime. The President Sunday said Iran had indicated its willingness to negotiate, but added that the US military was “looking at some very strong options.”

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters Monday that the President is “unafraid to use military options if and when he deems necessary.” But she added that “diplomacy is always the first option” and that “what you’re hearing publicly from the Iranian regime is quite (different) from the messages the administration is receiving privately”.

‘Leave Iran now’

The remarks came as the US Virtual Embassy in Iran on Monday issued an advisory to American nationals to “Leave Iran now”. The embassy said protests across Iran are escalating and could “turn violent”.

It may be noted that street protests have been reported from all 31 provinces of Iran. The Human Rights Activists News said at least 544 people have been killed in two weeks of protests.

Amid the unrest, the regime blocked phone service and internet access in the capital, Tehran, late last week.

‘Operation Sindoor ongoing’: Army Chief reveals India was ready for ground offensive against Pakistan

Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi today hailed the ongoing Operation Sindoor as the best example of tri-service synergy under a clear-cut political directive and full freedom to act or respond. While addressing the annual Army Day press conference in Delhi today, he asserted that any future misadventure will be ‘resolutely responded to’.

The Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) said, “…As far as our eyes and ears are concerned, because Operation Sindoor is still on, those eyes and ears will remain open. Under this, whatever action we have to take, we have already taken it forward.”

General Upendra Dwivedi said, “Following the Pahalgam terror attack, a clear decision to respond decisively was taken at the highest level. Operation Sindoor was conceptualised and executed with precision. Through 22 minutes of initiation on 7th May and an orchestration that lasted 88 hours up to 10th May, the operation reset strategic assumptions by striking deep, dismantling terror infrastructure, and puncturing the longstanding nuclear rhetoric. The Army successfully destroyed seven out of the nine targets and thereafter played a pivotal role in ensuring a calibrated response to Pak actions….”

Addressing the annual press conference of the Indian Army, he revealed that the Army had mobilised its personnel during Operation Sindoor and was ready to launch ground operations in case of any infringement by Pakistan. He said, “We had done major mobilisation…We were fully prepared for ground offensives if Pakistan made any mistake.”

The Indian Army Chief also acknowledged the proactive role of all stakeholders at the national level, including CAPFs, intelligence, civic bodies, state administration, and other ministries, including the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Railways, in the success of the operation.

Situation along borders under control

The Indian Army Chief stated that the situation along the Western Front and Jammu and Kashmir has remained sensitive since 10 May 2025, but is firmly under control. On the occurrence of terrorist activities in the area, he underlined that the terrorist-initiated incidents have practically ceased.

During the press conference, General Upendra Dwivedi shared that a total of 31 terrorists were eliminated in 2025, of which 65% were Pakistan origin, including the three perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack neutralised in Operation Mahadev. He further added that the active local terrorists are now in single digits and terrorist recruitment is almost non-existent, with only two in 2025.

“Clear indicators of positive change in J&K include robust development activity, revival of tourism and peaceful Sri Amarnath Yatra, which saw more than 4 lakh pilgrims exceeding the five-year average. The theme of terrorism to tourism is gradually taking shape…,” he said.

On the security update along the Northern Front, the Chief of the Army Staff clarified that the current situation remains stable, but needs constant vigil. He highlighted that apex-level interactions, renewed contact, and confidence-building measures are contributing to the gradual normalisation of the situation that has also enabled grazing, hydrotherapy camps, and other activities along the Northern Borders. “With our continued strategic orientation on this front, our deployment along the Line of Actual Control remains balanced and robust. Concurrently, capability development and infrastructure enhancement are progressing through a whole-of-government approach,” he said.

‘Marked improvement in Manipur’

Highlighting the marked improvement in the situation in Manipur during 2025, General Upendra Dwivedi credited neutral, transparent, and decisive action by security forces as well as numerous proactive government initiatives taken for the Northeast.

He said, “Peaceful conduct of the Durand Cup, resumption of cultural festivals and renewal of suspension of operations, that is, SoO, with Kuki insurgent groups in September 2025, have been key markers of stability.”

Army Chief on global conflicts

General Upendra Dwivedi, in his address, mentioned about the sharp rise in the number and intensity of armed conflicts worldwide. He stressed upon the simple reality of the global shifts, saying that ‘nations that stay prepared prevail’.

In this backdrop, he cited how Operation Sindoor demonstrated the country’s readiness, precision, and strategic clarity. He said, “Through our various initiatives, as part of ‘JAI’, that is, Jointness, Atmanirbharta, and Innovation, a clarion call given by the Prime Minister on September 2025, a year of reforms given by the Raksha Mantri in January 2025, and the Indian Army’s own decade of transformation. We can be justifiably very satisfied with the progress made during the year 2025…”
