Chocolate Day: Why singles are skipping emotional labour and choosing chocolate on February 9

No roses, no reservations, no awkward questions. Chocolate Day is where singles ditch Valentine pressure and celebrate self-love the sweetest way possible, one bite at a time.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Chocolate Day arrives quietly on February 9 sitting comfortably between Rose Day drama and Valentine’s Day pressure. No grand expectations. No relationship declarations. Just chocolate. And in 2026, that simplicity is exactly why it works.

What was once marketed as a couple’s celebration has slowly turned into a self-love festival for people who are single, tired, or simply over romantic performance. This shift is not just emotional. It is backed by psychology, consumer data, and changing dating behaviour.

Chocolate literally triggers “happy chemicals”

Chocolate’s emotional reputation is not a myth. According to research published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, chocolate consumption activates the brain’s dopamine reward system, the same system linked to pleasure and motivation.

Chocolate also contains phenylethylamine (PEA), a compound released in the brain when people experience attraction or excitement. Scientists often call it the “love molecule.”

In simple terms, chocolate mimics some of the biochemical effects of falling in love, without the emotional complications.

Dark chocolate goes even further. A study published in Nutrients journal found that cocoa-rich chocolate increases serotonin levels. This goes on to help regulate mood, anxiety, stress. This is why chocolate is commonly linked to comfort eating during emotional lows.

Stress is rising, dating is tiring

Chocolate Day’s popularity among singles makes sense in a stressful world. According to the World Health Organization, global stress levels have steadily increased since the pandemic, with young adults reporting higher emotional fatigue and anxiety.

Dating has not helped.

A 2023 Pew Research Center study found that 46% of online daters described their experience as frustrating. 35% said dating apps made them feel pessimistic about relationships. Many respondents said dating felt like work rather than joy.

Chocolate Day offers an alternative: a celebration with zero emotional labour.

Comfort eating is a real psychological response

Psychologists describe chocolate as a “functional comfort food.” Research published in Appetite journal explains that sweet and high-fat foods temporarily reduce the body’s stress response by lowering cortisol levels.

Chocolate also contains magnesium. This is a mineral that is supposed to improve your sleep quality and reduce anxiety. According to the National Institutes of Health, magnesium deficiency is common among adults dealing with chronic stress.

This makes Chocolate Day feel less like indulgence and more like emotional first aid.

Self-love is no longer loud

Self-love culture has changed. Once associated with luxury and Instagram perfection, it is now leaning toward quiet pleasure and personal comfort.

A global consumer trend report by Mintel notes that younger consumers increasingly prefer “small, private rewards” over public celebrations. This includes solo dining, stay-at-home treats, personal rituals.

Chocolate fits this perfectly. It is affordable, accessible, deeply personal. No captions required.

Chocolate sales tell the same story

Market data backs this emotional shift. According to reports from the National Confectioners Association, chocolate sales peak during Valentine week, but not all purchases are gift boxes.

Recent years show rising demand for single-portion premium chocolates, suggesting more people are buying for themselves rather than for partners. Brands have noticed. Advertising now focuses on self-reward language such as “me time,” “unwind,” and “you deserve this.”

Chocolate Day has quietly become a day of personal indulgence rather than romantic obligation.

Health benefits (but with boundaries)

Nutrition experts are careful but clear. Dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa is rich in flavonoids, antioxidants linked to improved heart health and better blood circulation. Studies published in The British Medical Journal associate moderate dark chocolate intake with lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

Of course, moderation matters. Chocolate is not a cure for loneliness. But experts agree that pleasure itself has health value when guilt is removed.

Chocolate Day removes that guilt.

Unlike Valentine’s Day, Chocolate Day has no social ranking system. No bouquets to compare. No dinner bills to judge. No relationship status to explain.

Sociologists argue that this makes it emotionally safer. Celebrations without competition reduce social anxiety and increase personal satisfaction. Chocolate Day’s lack of structure is its greatest strength.

You eat. You enjoy. And, you move on.

In a culture slowly learning that being alone is not the same as being unhappy, Chocolate Day feels modern, honest, and oddly comforting.

Bharat Ratna for Savarkar would enhance award’s prestige, says RSS chief

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said awarding the Bharat Ratna to Veer Savarkar would enhance the honour’s prestige, noting that the freedom fighter already enjoys wide public admiration.

IANS | New Delhi |

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday said that conferring the Bharat Ratna on Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, popularly known as Veer Savarkar, would be an “honour for the award itself”, asserting that the Hindutva ideologue has already garnered widespread public admiration.

Bhagwat made the remarks while addressing an event titled ‘100 Year of Sangh Journey – New Horizons’ in Mumbai.

Speaking on the “delay” on the conferment of the award, he said, “I am not part of that committee, but if I meet someone, I will ask why it is being delayed. If Savarkar is given the Bharat Ratna, it will be an honour to the award itself, and its prestige will increase. Even without receiving any honour, he already rules the hearts of the people.”

The demand for awarding Bharat Ratna to Savarkar has been a recurring political issue.

While several leaders and groups have advocated for the country’s highest civilian honour to be bestowed upon Savarkar, the Congress party has strongly opposed such proposals, describing him as a “traitor” over his mercy petitions submitted to British authorities during his imprisonment in the freedom struggle.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena have repeatedly voiced support for granting Bharat Ratna to Savarkar, citing his contributions as a freedom fighter, writer and social reformer.

During his address at the event, Bhagwat also spoke about the organisational approach and philosophy of the RSS, emphasising that the Sangh focuses on instilling “sanskar” or values rather than engaging in aggressive publicity or campaigning.

“Excessive campaigning leads to publicity, which can breed arrogance. One must protect oneself from it. Publicity should be like rainfall: appropriate in timing and quantity,” Bhagwat said, while adding that the RSS has been expanding its outreach initiatives in recent times.

Bhagwat also commented on language use within the RSS, stating that English would not be adopted as the medium of communication for the organisation’s functioning, as it is not an indigenous language.

He clarified that while English is used where required, it is not central to the Sangh’s communication practices.

“We want to collaborate with Indian individuals. Wherever English is required, we are willing to use it.,” he said.

He further stressed the importance of language skills, suggesting that individuals should strive to speak English proficiently.

“People should be able to speak English in a way that native speakers will want to listen,” Bhagwat said.

At the same time, he underlined the need to preserve native languages, stating, “We should master English, but that does not mean we forget our mother tongue.”

Recalling a previous interaction in Bengaluru, Bhagwat mentioned that representatives from several southern states had difficulty understanding Hindi during discussions.

He said that he had responded to their queries in English in order to ensure effective communication, highlighting the organisation’s pragmatic approach towards language usage.

Displaying ’empty trunk’, Tejasvi Surya detained during protest in Bengaluru

BJP Yuva Morcha National President and Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya protested against the Bengaluru Metro fare hike by travelling with an empty trunk at R.V. Road Metro Station. The protest, held with BJP workers and MLA C.K. Ramamurthy, led to a confrontation with police and his brief detention, as leaders accused the state government of burdening commuters with steep fare increases.

IANS | New Delhi |

BJP Yuva Morcha National President and Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya staged a protest at a Metro station in Bengaluru on Monday against the recent fare hike. Responding to Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar’s remark that Surya is an “empty trunk”, the BJP MP carried an empty trunk during the protest and displayed a poster stating, “The Congress-led government is an empty trunk government.”

The protest also carried photographs of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar.

The protest was held at the R.V. Road Metro Station along with Jayanagara Assembly constituency MLA C.K. Ramamurthy and BJP party workers. The police objected to the protest, leading to arguments between the police and Tejasvi Surya.

As the police took him into custody, Surya questioned the grounds of his detention, stating that it amounted to a breach of his privilege as a Member of Parliament.

He told the police that they would have to inform the Speaker of the Lok Sabha if he was to be detained. Surya was planning to travel by Metro, but the police denied him permission and took him into custody.

“I want to ask the police department: in their notice, they have stated that I should not stage a protest or dharna. I am not doing anything of that sort. I have brought an empty trunk and am travelling by Metro. The conditions of this notice do not apply to me. You should not make a preventive arrest and should allow me to travel by Metro,” Surya said.

He also questioned the state government over the police action. “I want to question the Chief Minister, the Deputy Chief Minister and the government. I have gone to West Bengal, where the goons of the Trinamool Congress and their country bombs did not scare me from staging protests. Now they want to threaten me by issuing a police notice. We are not cowards who will be scared by such notices. This agitation will continue,” he said.

The police maintained that Surya was carrying a trunk with a poster against the Congress-led government and that, as per a High Court order, protests are not permitted anywhere in Bengaluru except at Freedom Park.

BJP MLA C.K. Ramamurthy said MP Tejasvi Surya and P.C. Mohan had spoken to the Union Minister regarding the issue and that the matter had been put on hold. “Our objective is that the Fare Fixation Committee should be changed, and a fresh proposal should be sent. Instead, the state government is pushing ahead with the fare hike,” he said.

Referring to Deputy CM Shivakumar’s remark, Ramamurthy said the allegation that Tejasvi Surya is an empty trunk is baseless. “In this background, we are protesting with an empty trunk. Across the country, Metro fares have not been increased anywhere. In Bengaluru, Metro fares have been hiked by up to 80 per cent. The state government is responsible. If the price hike has been implemented across the country, the Centre could have been blamed,” he stated.

He further said that the hike has been implemented only in Bengaluru and that the state government is responsible for the burden on commuters. “Passengers, mostly from the middle class and students, are being affected. Fares have increased by up to Rs 50, forcing people to spend nearly Rs 300 per day to travel by Metro,” Ramamurthy said.

It may be noted that on Saturday, Tejasvi Surya announced that following discussions with Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, the proposed Bengaluru Metro fare hike has been temporarily suspended. He stated that he had sought the Union Minister’s immediate intervention regarding the fare increase scheduled to take effect on February 9.

It also scored one of the biggest Easter weekend openings in history and finished as the year’s second-highest-grossing film, right behind ‘Barbie’.

Why Donald Trump went after Bad Bunny for Super Bowl Halftime Show: Language, immigration politics, culture wars

Donald Trump sparked fresh culture war debate after attacking Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime show. The moment reignited arguments over language, music, and Latino representation in America.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

As millions around the world tuned in for the Super Bowl spectacle, US president Donald Trump jumped onto social media with a full-blown rant that instantly became part of the night’s drama and this time, his target was Bad Bunny for his halftime show.

Super Bowl night that turned political fast

While fans were still settling in with snacks and jerseys, Trump was already typing furiously on Truth Social. His verdict on the halftime show was harsh. According to Trump, Bad Bunny’s performance was “absolutely terrible” and, in his words, “one of the worst, EVER.”

Trump did not hold back. He claimed the show “made no sense” and said it did not reflect what he called the “Greatness of America.” He went on to argue that the performance failed to meet the country’s “standards of Success, Creativity, or Excellence.”

Trump’s criticism went deeper than just taste. He complained that viewers could not understand what Bad Bunny was saying and described the dancing as “disgusting,” especially considering that children were watching across the US and around the world.

He labeled the halftime show a “slap in the face” to the country and used the moment to praise what he said were America’s recent achievements, including record stock markets and strong 401(k)s. According to Trump, there was “nothing inspirational” about the performance at all.

He also predicted that the show would still receive glowing reviews but not because it deserved them. Trump accused the “Fake News Media” of being out of touch with what he called the “REAL WORLD.”

As if that wasn’t enough, he threw in one more complaint, urging the NFL to immediately scrap its new kickoff rule. He ended the post with his familiar slogan and signed off as “President DONALD J TRUMP.”

Friendlier message before the firestorm

Interestingly, Trump’s tone earlier in the evening was far more cheerful. As the Super Bowl was just beginning, he posted a positive message wishing Americans an enjoyable game.

In that post, he said the country was “stronger, bigger, and better than ever before” and promised that “the best is yet to come.”

That optimism, however, clearly did not survive the halftime break.

MAGA outrage began months ago

The backlash did not start on Super Bowl night. When the NFL and Apple Music announced Bad Bunny as the 2026 halftime performer last September, the reaction from MAGA circles was immediate and intense.

Trump’s former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski was among the first to speak out. He strongly condemned the choice and even suggested that ICE agents would be present at the Super Bowl, a comment that drew sharp criticism.

Lewandowski said it was “shameful” that the NFL picked someone he claimed “seems to hate America.” He argued that the halftime show should bring people together, not divide them, and added that there were plenty of other entertainers who could have done that job instead.

Rare US appearance for Bad Bunny

Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl performance carried extra weight for another reason. It is set to be his only US concert appearance this year. His Debí Tirar Más Fotos World Tour is skipping the United States entirely.

In an interview with I-D magazine, Bad Bunny explained that fear of ICE raids played a role in his decision not to tour the US. This detail only added fuel to the already heated political reactions surrounding his Super Bowl appearance.

Trump says he doesn’t even know the artist

Trump later doubled down on his criticism during an appearance on NewsMax’s “Greg Kelly Reports.” He called Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl booking “absolutely ridiculous,” while also claiming he had never heard of the Grammy-winning artist.

“I don’t know who he is,” Trump said, adding that he did not understand why Bad Bunny was chosen. He blamed unnamed promoters and said the entire situation was “crazy.”

Bad Bunny’s message to the Latino community

Bad Bunny has spoken openly about what performing at the Super Bowl means to him. When he hosted “Saturday Night Live” last October, he said the halftime show was bigger than his own career.

He described it as a win for Latinos and Latinas across the United States who have worked hard to open doors. According to Bad Bunny, their contributions and presence in the country cannot be erased or taken away.

Opposition to move no-confidence motion against LS Speaker Om Birla: Report

Congress MP KC Venugopal told the media that the Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, has not been allowed to speak in Parliament on important matters, and he faulted the Lok Sabha Speaker for denying the opportunity to the LoP who is considered a shadow of the Prime Minister in the Lower House.

Deepak Nagpal | New Delhi |

Reports said on Monday that the Opposition is planning to move a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. This has been reported by the news agency ANI, quoting sources.

It has been reported that the Opposition is likely to move the motion in the second part of the Budget Session, as it requires 20 days’ notice. The reasons to be listed for moving the motion include: Lok Sabha LoP not being allowed to speak; women MPs named by the Chair; certain Treasury Bench MPs always given privilege in the House; and the way 8 Opposition MPs were suspended for the whole session.

Congress MP KC Venugopal told the media that the Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, has not been allowed to speak in Parliament on important matters, and he faulted the Lok Sabha Speaker for denying the opportunity to the LoP, who is considered a shadow of the Prime Minister in the Lower House.

Venugopal further blamed Speaker Birla for levelling unfounded allegations against women MPs, stating such an attitude against the Opposition has never been seen in Parliament before.

“As per the Parliamentary rules, the Leader of the Opposition is a shadow Prime Minister. But here, the LoP is not being allowed to speak in the House. The government can say anything and attack anyone… the Speaker is himself making allegations against the Congress women MPs, but there is no space for the opposition in this House at all and they are not even allowed… This kind of attitude against the opposition never happened before… We will wait for the action…,” the Congress MP told reporters outside Parliament, as per ANI.

He added, “The US-India trade deal was somewhat shocking and the Leader of Opposition wanted to mention a few things about it to the Speaker, but that was also not allowed. The government wants to preserve Parliament for itself…”

Why LoP was not allowed to speak and the allegation against women MPs

It may be noted that Rahul Gandhi had triggered a huge row in Parliament last Monday by quoting from an unpublished book of former Army Chief General MM Naravane. Excerpts of the memoir were published in an article published by an online magazine. The book talks about the Indo-China LAC standoff of 2020.

Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha Speaker had alleged on Thursday that he had asked PM Narendra Modi to not to come to the Lok Sabha on Wednesday evening to reply to the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address, fearing a physical attack by Opposition MPs, including women parliamentarians who had planned to block the PM’s way.

Speaking on the Opposition’s plan to move a no-confidence motion against Om Birla, Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav said all opposition parties will follow the decision made by the senior leaders of the INDIA alliance.

Congress MP Mallu Ravi said the Opposition was left with no other choice. “LoP Rahul Gandhi was not allowed to speak in the House. Whenever we want to speak, the House is adjourned. Today, we also asked for permission for the LoP to speak, but it was not granted. Does it happen in any democratic country where a LoP is not allowed to speak? This is not a parliamentary democracy. The BJP does not have the capacity to run the House and only blames the Opposition,” Ravi said.

Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) MP Rajesh Verma, however, said the Opposition led by the Congress was only seeking to do politics. “If the Congress doesn’t understand even now, then this will become a reason for its fall. It is important to recognise that the Opposition is neither allowing the House to function nor making any positive contribution to the government’s decision-making. Bringing this no-confidence motion proves that they only want to do politics,” he said.

Meanwhile, opposition uproar continued in the Lok Sabha today as it reconvened and was adjourned first till 12 noon and then till 2 pm by Speaker Birla. The Opposition demanded a discussion on the India-US trade deal framework, among other issues.

Prakash Raj steps away from ‘Spirit’? Actor reacts to fallout rumours with director Sandeep Reddy Vanga on Prabhas-starrer

Delhi school bomb threat: Khalistani-linked emails sent to 9 schools, security tightened across city

Several Delhi schools received bomb threat emails on Monday, triggering security checks and investigations as police tightened alert levels across the capital amid rising concern.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

At least nine schools across Delhi received bomb threat emails on Monday morning, prompting a swift security response and heightened alert across the national capital, police sources said. The threatening emails, suspected to be part of a Khalistani-linked intimidation attempt, were received between 8.30 am and 9.00 am.

Following the alerts, Delhi Police teams and bomb disposal squads rushed to the campuses. Thorough checks were carried out as a precautionary measure, even as authorities began tracking the origin of the emails.

Police officials confirmed that the threat messages were received by multiple schools spread across different zones of the city, triggering concern among parents and school administrations. Officials said investigations are ongoing and the threats are being treated with seriousness amid a broader pattern of similar incidents in recent weeks.

Schools that received bomb threat emails in Delhi

According to police sources, the schools that received the emails include Loreto Convent School in Delhi Cantt, Cambridge School in Srinivasanpuri and New Friends Colony, Venkateshwar School and CM School in Rohini, The Indian School in Sadiq Nagar, DTA School in INA, and Bal Bharati School in Rohini.

Security personnel conducted detailed inspections across all campuses. No suspicious object had been found till the filing of this report, officials said, adding that standard operating procedures were followed at every location.

Security agencies probe source of emails

Authorities are now examining the technical trail of the emails to determine their origin and intent. Police sources said cyber units are involved in the probe, and the situation continues to be monitored closely across Delhi, with additional security deployment in sensitive areas.

Officials emphasised that the response was precautionary but necessary, given the repeated nature of such threats and their potential to cause panic.

Earlier bomb threat scare in Chandigarh schools

The Delhi incident follows a similar scare in Chandigarh last month, when bomb threat emails were sent to 30 schools across the Union Territory on January 28.

According to Chandigarh Police, 22 private schools and eight government schools had received the emails, prompting an immediate response from anti-sabotage teams, bomb disposal squads, local police, fire brigade personnel, ambulances and PCR units.

After thorough checks, no explosive or suspicious material was found. An FIR was later registered at Police Station Sector 17 under Sections 113(3), 351(4) and 62 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 66F of the Information Technology Act.

“As a precautionary measure, regular deployment of police force will be ensured in and around schools… to ensure the smooth and safe functioning of educational institutions,” Chandigarh Police had said in a statement.

Adarsh Gourav: Being around the underground rap scene helped me find Maruti’s fire

Adarsh Gourav reveals how spending time with Mumbai’s underground rap community helped him prepare for ‘Tu Yaa Main’.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

BAFTA-nominated actor Adarsh Gourav has gone deep into Mumbai’s underground rap scene for his upcoming film Tu Yaa Main. In the film, he plays Maruti, a local rapper from Nalasopara, and the actor felt that understanding the world behind the music was the way to bringing the character to life.

Rather than relying only on the script, Adarsh chose to step into the spaces where the city’s independent rap movement was born.

Learning from the city’s independent voices

As part of his preparation, Adarsh spent time with underground artists from Govandi, Nalasopara, Kurla, Dharavi and Andheri. He observed their daily lives, jammed with them and spoke to them about their journeys.

“Very early on, I realised that Maruti couldn’t be built in isolation,” Adarsh said. “His voice, his body language, even his silences come from the place he grew up in.” He added that being present in those spaces helped him understand the emotional weight behind the music.

More than music, it was about lived stories

According to the actor, what stayed with him most was how deeply and personal the music felt. The conversations often went beyond beats and lyrics.

“We spoke about ambition, about being unheard, and about using music as a way to claim space,” he shared, adding that those interactions shaped his performance more than any written note could.

Understanding where the ‘fire’ comes from

Reflecting on the experience, Adarsh said spending time with the underground rap community helped him understand the raw honesty that fuels their art.

“Their music isn’t performative, it’s lived,” he said. “I wanted Maruti to feel like someone who belongs to that world, not someone pretending to. That truth was important to me while playing him.”

About ‘Tu Yaa Main’

Directed by Bejoy Nambiar, Tu Yaa Main is produced by Aanand L Rai and Himanshu Sharma under Colour Yellow, along with Vinod Bhanushali and Kamlesh Bhanushali of Bhanushali Studios Limited.

Rooted in today’s creator-driven culture, the film offers a youthful take on love and survival and is set to release on February 13, 2026.

Adarsh Gourav’s journey so far

Adarsh Gourav began his career as a child actor and appeared in films like My Name Is Khan. He later gained recognition for his work in Made in Heaven and achieved global acclaim with The White Tiger, earning a Golden Globe nomination.

Known for his grounded performances, he has also featured in international projects such as Apple TV+’s Extrapolations.

A high-speed Lamborghini driven by Shivam Mishra, the son of businessman KK Mishra, injured at least six people on VIP Road in Kanpur on Sunday afternoon, triggering panic and a brief mob backlash. The crash occurred at around 3.15 pm near Rev-3 Mall, where the car went out of control, rammed pedestrians and multiple vehicles, and was later seized by police.

The Kanpur Police have registered an FIR against an unknown person under various sections of the BNSS in connection with the incident, under the Gwaltoli police station area.

Witnesses, meanwhile, alleged the driver was intoxicated; police said those claims are being examined.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Atul Kumar Srivastava said the Lamborghini veered into people standing along the roadside and several vehicles, causing injuries and chaos in the area. The injured were taken to a private hospital, while the car, which was registered in Northwest Delhi’s Rohini, was placed in police custody.

“The accident occurred around 3.15 pm near Rev-3 Mall when the luxury car, reportedly driven by Shivam Mishra, the son of businessman KK Mishra, went out of control and ploughed into people standing along the roadside and several vehicles, triggering panic in the area,” said Srivastava.

Kanpur Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal on Monday confirmed that the car was being driven by Shivam Mishra.

“We have found the details of the car. The car has been seized. The car was driven by Shivam Mishra. His father is KK Mishra. After the accident, Shivam Mishra’s bouncers pulled him out of the car. It is being said that he has some medical issues. The FIR of the accident was registered earlier, and now, in our investigation, we have learned that the name of the driver is Shivam Mishra,” Commissioner Lal told the media.

“Shivam Mishra is in the hospital. Our police team has reached his residence for further investigation. An FIR of an accident has been registered. One person was injured. He has been treated in the hospital. Law is equal for everyone, whether it is a Lamborghini or a smaller car. Actions will be taken against Shivam Mishra who was driving the car,” he added.

What happened on VIP Road

Eyewitness accounts said the Lamborghini Aventador was moving at a very high speed when it first struck an auto-rickshaw and then smashed into a parked Royal Enfield motorcycle. The impact flung the motorcycle rider nearly 10 feet into the air. The luxury car mounted the motorcycle’s front wheel, dragged it for some distance, and finally hit an electric pole before coming to a halt.

Crowd backlash and police response

Mishra allegedly tried to flee the scene instead of stopping after the collision. People said bouncers following him in another vehicle attempted to shield him and misbehaved with bystanders. Enraged passersby then smashed the Lamborghini’s windows and pulled Mishra out of the car.

Police reached the spot soon after, brought the situation under control, and shifted Mishra and the injured to hospital. The Lamborghini, reportedly worth over Rs 6 crore, suffered heavy damage and remains in police custody as the investigation continues.

BJP MLA Vungjagin Valte airlifted to Delhi after mob attack amid Manipur unrest

BJP MLA Vungjagin Valte was airlifted to Delhi for medical treatment after suffering critical injuries in an alleged mob attack amid ongoing unrest in Manipur.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

BJP MLA Vungjagin Valte was airlifted to Delhi on Sunday for medical examination after sustaining serious injuries in an alleged mob attack linked to Manipur’s continuing communal unrest. He was flown out in an air ambulance, as his condition remains critical.

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand received Valte at Imphal Airport before his departure. The evacuation comes at a time when the state is witnessing fresh political tension and street protests following recent changes in the government.

Valte’s son, David Mang Valte, speaking from Churachandpur, said the family was informed two days ago about complications related to his father’s lungs. “The day before yesterday, we came to know that he has a lung problem. Now his condition is a little bit stable. He is critical after he suffered from that mob violence. His health is not in good condition for now,” he told ANI.

Attack linked to ongoing communal tensions

David Mang Valte said the attack took place against the backdrop of tensions between the Kuki, Meitei and Zomi communities. According to him, the MLA had gone to meet the former Chief Minister of Manipur during the period of unrest.

“Due to the communal crisis between the Kuki, the Maiti, and the Zomi communities, he went to visit the former CM of Manipur. On his way back home, he was attacked by the Arambai Tenggol,” he said.

BJP MLA Tongbram Robindro Singh said the newly formed government is focused on stabilising the situation. “Following the formation of the new popular government in Manipur, sustained efforts are underway under the leadership of the CM, Yumnam Khemchand. We are working to restore peace and normalcy in the state. All the people of Manipur are wishing for his speedy recovery,” he told reporters.

Background of unrest in Manipur

Manipur has been witnessing ethnic violence since May 2023, with tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities continuing for nearly two years. Months of unrest have reshaped daily life in Manipur, hurting livelihoods, disrupting economic activity and testing the state’s ability to govern.

The latest flare-up followed protests after the swearing-in of Deputy Chief Ministers Nemcha Kipgen and Losii Dikho. Anger erupted over the inclusion of three Kuki-Zomi MLAs in the Manipur government. While Nemcha Kipgen was sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister, two others, LM Khaute and Ngursanglur, were reportedly due to take oath.

Opposing the move, protesters staged demonstrations demanding justice. The situation escalated on Thursday evening at around 6 pm in the Tuibong Main Market area, where hundreds of young protesters attempted to push security forces back to their barracks.

Clashes, tear gas and overnight standoff

As security personnel refused to withdraw, clashes broke out, with stone pelting reported and tyres set ablaze on the road. Assam Rifles officials, including the commander of the 27 Sector, were deployed to control the situation, though initial attempts failed to calm the crowd.

Security forces later temporarily pulled back while maintaining their positions. Protesters regrouped multiple times through the night. Tear gas was used intermittently, and around 11 pm, a lathi charge was carried out to disperse the crowd. Despite this, the situation remained tense as protesters regrouped again and resumed confrontation with security personnel.

Last week, BJP Manipur Legislature Party leader Yumnam Khemchand Singh was sworn in as Chief Minister after the withdrawal of President’s Rule. Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla administered the oath at Lok Bhavan in Imphal.

Senior legislators Nemcha Kipgen and Losii Dikho also took oath as Deputy Chief Ministers. BJP workers later gathered at the party headquarters in Imphal to celebrate the appointment of the new Chief Minister.

Tamil Nadu weather: Morning fog till February 12, dry conditions to persist

Several districts in Tamil Nadu are likely to witness morning fog over the next few days, while dry weather and gradually rising temperatures are expected to continue across the state.

IANS | Mumbai |

Several districts across Tamil Nadu are likely to wake up to moderate morning fog over the next few days, with reduced visibility expected during early hours, even as the state continues to experience predominantly dry weather and a gradual rise in temperatures, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said.

According to the latest forecast, misty and foggy conditions will prevail in many northern and western districts until February 12. Areas including Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Erode, Dindigul, and the Nilgiris are expected to witness moderate fog during the early morning hours, potentially affecting road travel and daily commuting.

Motorists, particularly those using highways and ghat roads, have been advised to drive cautiously due to reduced visibility.

Chennai and its neighbouring districts — Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kancheepuram — are also likely to experience light to moderate mist during the morning.

In the capital city, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy, with one or two places reporting mild fog at dawn.

Despite the foggy mornings, the overall weather pattern across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal will remain largely dry until February 14th.

The Meteorological Department has ruled out any significant rainfall activity during this period, indicating stable atmospheric conditions across the region.

Meanwhile, daytime temperatures are forecast to climb gradually. Maximum temperatures in some parts of the state may increase by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius by February 12th, leading to warmer afternoons.

Weather experts noted that such fluctuations are typical in this time of year, when clear skies during the day contribute to rising heat while cooler nights create fog formation in the early hours.

Health officials have advised residents to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak afternoon hours. The elderly, children, and those working outdoors have been urged to take extra precautions.

With dry conditions set to persist and fog expected in several districts, residents can expect misty mornings followed by warm and clear days across Tamil Nadu in the coming week.

The focus of the workshop will be on sharing the CWC’s existing services and new initiatives with all stakeholders and seeking their feedback to strengthen Centre–State coordination in flood forecasting, preparedness, and flood management planning. It also aims to promote effective utilisation of the CWC’s forecasting and decision-support services by state governments with support from various central organisations concerned.

The governments of flood-prone states will be given an opportunity to share their initiatives in flood forecasting activities and options for creating synergy with the CWC services.

The workshop is expected to contribute to improved flood preparedness, better-quality flood management proposals, and strengthened institutional coordination in line with the government’s focus on disaster resilience and climate-responsive water management.

Forenoon technical sessions will highlight the CWC’s flood forecasting capabilities, including short-range and seven-day advisory forecasts, inundation forecasting, integrated reservoir operation support, GLOF monitoring, and new initiatives such as AI/ML applications, use of extended-range rainfall forecasts from IMD, and flash flood forecasting. State governments will share their experiences and initiatives in flood forecasting and coordination with the CWC.

The afternoon session will focus on the guidelines for preparation, submission and appraisal of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for flood management and anti-erosion works, with emphasis on improving project quality and timely appraisal. The feedback from the states will help in revising the guidelines.

The workshop will conclude with a session chaired by the CWC Chairman, Anupam Prasad, outlining key takeaways and the way forward.

Secretary, Department of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, V.L. Kantha Rao, will inaugurate the workshop, which will be attended by the CWC Chairman and members, and senior officers from the state governments.

Gaurav Gogoi a key player in global nexus meant to destablise India: Assam CM Sarma

Amid escalating political controversy in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma once again reiterated his ‘Pakistan link’ claims of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his wife, stating that both were involved in a plot to undermine India’s development by associating with Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh.

Sarma had earlier announced that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into alleged links involving Gaurav Gogoi and his wife with Pakistan-based individuals would be transferred to a central agency.

Backing his previous claims, in a post on X, the Chief Minister described the development as a “significant step in exposing a broader Pakistan-linked network aimed at destabilising India through proxy actors”.

“Today marks a significant step in unearthing a global nexus to destabilise India by Pakistan and its proxy players. I have placed on record, to the people of Bharat, the deep conspiracy hatched by Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, a Pakistani national to embed an agent Elizabeth Coleburn to study India’s development and find ways to derail it through environmental activism,” Sarma wrote on ‘X’.

The Chief Minister further alleged that Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, son of a former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, played a role in this network, either directly or indirectly.

According to Sarma, Gogoi facilitated these activities by allegedly sourcing sensitive parliamentary information, undertaking undisclosed travel to Pakistan, and maintaining links with Pakistani officials under the pretext of youth exchange programmes.

“Through layers of shady employment contracts, concealed funding patterns, suspicious travel activity and transmission of sensitive information, this setup ran a web of anti-India activities. What’s deeply unfortunate is that a Congress MP from Assam, who also happens to be the son of a former Chief Minister, was also a key player in this entire network and directly or indirectly facilitated these activities through sourcing sensitive parliamentary answers, undertaking secret Pakistani trip and maintaining relations with Pakistani officials in India in the guise of youth exchange,” said the ‘X’ post.

Sarma praised the Assam Police for uncovering what he called a dangerous nexus despite institutional limitations.

He added that although the scale of the alleged activities was not initially apparent, he felt it was his responsibility to present the findings of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the public.

“I commend my officers of Assam Police, who despite their limitations have been able to reveal this dangerous nexus and bring startling revelations to the fore. The depth of material in hand and the many unanswered questions call for greater scrutiny by a Central Govt agency and we have referred the matter to the Ministry of Home Affairs for further directions. When this matter surfaced, we did not imagine the sheer scale of the anti-India activities but having known about the facts, it was my duty to bring to light the findings of the SIT. While a Central Agency will delve deeper now, I leave it to people’s court to also decide how a leader of the Congress party in Assam, in cahoots with Pakistani state actors, worked against the interests of India,” CM Himanta said.

Meanwhile, Gaurav Gogoi hit back at Sarma on Sunday, accusing Chief Minister of raking up old allegations of anti-national activities against him as the issue of 12,000 bighas of land is coming to the fore, with people coming out and wanting to see a new Bor Assam.

Indian Constitution begins with ‘We the People’, not ‘Bharat Mata’: Owaisi

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi emphasised that the Indian Constitution begins with the English words ‘We the People’, and not with the name ‘Bharat Mata’.

ANI | New Delhi |

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi emphasised that the Indian Constitution begins with the English words ‘We the People’, and not with the name ‘Bharat Mata’.

Speaking at a public rally in Sadasivpet on Sunday, he addressed the long-standing parliamentary debate over the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, underscoring the importance of the Constitution’s secular and inclusive principles.

He noted that it does not invoke the name “Bharat Mata,” underscoring that the Constitution guarantees freedom of religion under Article 25. The preamble, he noted, enshrines the values of liberty, equality, justice, and fraternity for all citizens.

“When the debate was going on, on the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, I stood up and told the entire Parliament that on January 24, 1950, we gave ourselves a constitution, and that constitution begins with the English words ‘We the People.’ This constitution does not begin with the name of Bharat Mata. The constitution states, under Article 25, that you will have religious freedom. The preamble of this constitution speaks of liberty, equality, justice, and fraternity,” Owaisi said.

He emphasised that linking patriotism solely to religion undermines the sacrifices of many freedom fighters and is inconsistent with the principles of the Constitution.
“If you connect religious worship with love for the nation, then what answer will you give to Bahadur Shah Zafar, who sacrificed his life and whose remains are in Rangoon?… What answer will you give to Yusuf Meherally? Who told Gandhi to use the words ‘Quit India,’ and who gave the slogan ‘Go Back, Simon’? If you connect one thing with religion and say that religion is love for the nation, it is not acceptable to us,” said Owaisi.
During the Parliament’s winter session last year, a detailed debate was held on the occasion of Vande Mataram’s 150th anniversary.
