Statesman News Service | Jammu |

As many as 235 civilians, including schoolchildren, stranded in snow,
have been rescued by the troops of the White Knight Corps of the
Indian Army and J&K Police from the 14,000 feet high Sinthan Pass in
the Kishtwar district of the Jammu division, said a defence spokesman
on Monday.

These civilians travelling in 38 vehicles on Sunday were caught in
heavy snowfall in the road that links the Kishtwar with the Anantnag
district in south Kashmir. They were travelling on the mountainous
road ignoring the snow alert of the weather department.

The defence spokesman said that the civilians were stranded in severe
weather conditions.

The White Knight Corps wrote on X; “On 15 March information was
received regarding 235 civilians and 38 vehicles stranded at Sinthan
Pass in the general area of Kishtwar, due to heavy snowfall and severe
weather conditions. Troops of @Whiteknight_IA were immediately
mobilised to launch a swift rescue operation despite treacherous
terrain and relentless snowfall”.

“Braving extreme weather and snow-blocked roads, rescue teams reached
Sinthan Top and stranded civilians were provided hot meals, drinking
water and shelter. Repair and recovery teams restored mobility of
stranded vehicles, while passengers from unrecoverable vehicles were
safely evacuated. Medical teams rendered assistance and essential
medicines to those in need”.

“The operation concluded successfully, with all civilians and vehicles
safely escorted to safety. The mission witnessed seamless coordination
between the Indian Army, J&K Police and National Highways and
Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL), reaffirming the
Indian Army’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives in the

TMC walkout in Rajya Sabha against removal of West Bengal officials by ECI

Members of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) staged a walkout in-the Rajya Sabha on Monday, protesting the Election Commission ofIndia’s (ECI) alleged misuse of power following the late-night removalof senior West Bengal officials.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Members of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) staged a walkout in
the Rajya Sabha on Monday, protesting the Election Commission of
India’s (ECI) alleged misuse of power following the late-night removal
of senior West Bengal officials.

During the session, Trinamool MPs condemned the removal of the state’s
Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary, and Home Secretary by the poll
body, labeling the action arbitrary and undemocratic. The protest
intensified as party members voiced strong criticism of the Chief
Election Commissioner’s conduct.

“In the dead of night, the Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary, and
Home Secretary of Bengal were removed by the Election Commission,” a
Trinamool member declared. “The EC has full authority, but they can
misuse it. I am wearing a white shirt; yet they claim it’s blue!”

The party stated that the walkout was a demonstration against the
Election Commission’s current action. “To protest the Chief Election
Commissioner’s actions, we, the All India Trinamool Congress, are
walking out for the day,” said Rajya Sabha member Derek O’Brien.

This demonstration occurs amid heightened political sensitivity, with
motions for the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner initiated
in both Houses of Parliament. Though rare and constitutionally
complex, these motions have escalated tensions between the ruling
government and opposition factions over the Election Commission’s
role.

The Election Commission, constitutionally mandated to ensure free and
fair elections, has the authority to transfer or remove officials to
maintain electoral neutrality. However, such decisions frequently
trigger political controversy, especially during election seasons when
administrative changes attract intense scrutiny.

The Trinamool walkout briefly disrupted Upper House proceedings,
underscoring mounting friction between the opposition and the Election
Commission over electoral oversight and administrative moves in West
Bengal.

upcoming assembly elections, where the BJP seeks to challenge the
incumbent Trinamool Congress.

Another emotional reaction read, “Wow. I am crying.”

One fan added, “I’m a Sanju fan but I love KL. He is so humble.”

Samson was honoured at the BCCI Naman Awards 2026, held in New Delhi on March 15, as part of India’s 2026 T20 World Cup–winning squad. The wicketkeeper-batter also received official recognition for being named the Player of the Tournament by the ICC after a standout campaign.

The ceremony also felicitated the India national cricket team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, for winning the country’s third T20 World Cup title.

India created history by winning their third T20 World Cup title after a commanding 96-run victory over New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Samson played a crucial role in the tournament, emerging as India’s leading run-scorer with 321 runs in five innings at an average of 80.25 and a strike rate of 199.37. His tally also surpassed Virat Kohli’s 319 runs in the 2014 T20 World Cup, the previous record for most runs by an Indian in a single edition of the tournament.

Hardeep Puri’s daughter moves Delhi HC, seeks removal of content linking her to Jeffrey Epstein

Himayani Puri has sought permanent and mandatory injunctions along with damages against several individuals and online platforms for allegedly publishing and circulating defamatory content linking her to the criminal activities of Jeffrey Epstein.

Statesman News Service | NEW DELHI |

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri’s daughter, Himayani Puri, on Monday moved the Delhi High Court against what she called “false and malicious” news reports and social media posts linking her to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

In her plea, Himayani has sought permanent and mandatory injunctions along with damages against several individuals and online platforms for allegedly publishing and circulating defamatory content linking her to the criminal activities of Jeffrey Epstein.

She claimed that the allegations against her are motivated and targeted because she is the daughter of Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, who himself has found himself embroiled in the same controversy after his e-mail exchanges with Epstein surfaced.

“It is only because Mr. Hardeep Singh Puri is currently a senior member of the Union Cabinet that his daughter, the Plaintiff, who is an exceptionally accomplished and self-reliant professional, is being viciously attacked,” the plea stated.

The development comes after several posts and reports claimed that Himayani maintained direct or indirect business, financial, personal, or other network associations with Jeffrey Epstein. The posts and reports also alleged that the Real Partners LLC, where Puri worked, received funds from Epstein and his associates.

In her plea, Himayani Puri urged the Delhi High Court to direct social media platforms, including X, Google, Meta, and LinkedIn, to take down the “false and defamatory posts”.

Hardeep Puri’s clarification on his Epstein links

Earlier last month, Hardeep Puri had admitted that he and Epstein knew each other and they even met on a few occasions. However, the minister claimed that his interactions had nothing to do with the sex offender’s criminal activities.

“The Epstein Files are about charges that he had an island where he used to take people to indulge their sexual fantasies, charges of paedophilia, there are victims of this. Those victims have brought cases against people in authority. My interaction had nothing to do with that,” Puri said.

Describing the nature of his interaction with Epstein, Puri said, “These facts are known in the public domain. Three million emails have been released. I was in New York for 8 years, from May 2009, when I joined as India’s Ambassador to the UN. In 2017, I became Minister. There are references to possibly three or four meetings in 8 years.”

He stated that he had already sent a note to Rahul Gandhi in November last year clarifying that his meetings with Epstein were only professional.

‘550 Indians return home from Iran’: EAM Jaishankar thanks Armenia for safe evacuation

The evacuation has been carried out through coordinated land and air routes, with neighbouring Armenia playing a key role in facilitating the movement of Indian citizens out of Iran.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

More than 550 Indian nationals have been safely evacuated from Iran amid the escalating conflict in West Asia, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Monday. The evacuation has been carried out through coordinated land and air routes, with neighbouring Armenia playing a key role in facilitating the movement of Indian citizens out of Iran.

According to the MEA, the Government and people of Armenia assisted India in enabling the safe transit of evacuees to India. External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar on Monday expressed gratitude to Armenia and appreciated its cooperation during the evacuation efforts in the midst of the ongoing regional crisis.

Tensions in the region escalated after US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28 reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei along with several top military officials. In response, Iran launched drone and missile attacks targeting the United States, Israel, and allied forces across West Asia, raising concerns about the safety of foreign nationals in the region.

First batch of students returns to Delhi

The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) confirmed that the first batch of 70 Indian students evacuated from Iran had safely arrived at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi on Sunday.

Nasir Khuehami, National Convenor of the association, said the students undertook a difficult transit route before reaching India safely. The students travelled to India on a commercial flight after transiting through Armenia and Dubai, following a lengthy land and air journey arranged in coordination with authorities.

Government evacuation efforts

The Government of India is continuing efforts to assist its citizens in Iran while also monitoring the broader impact of the conflict on shipping routes and India’s energy security.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the ministry remains in constant contact with Indian nationals in Iran and is helping those who wish to leave the country.

Key points shared by MEA:

  • Around 9,000 Indian nationals are or were in Iran, including students, seafarers, businesspeople, professionals, and pilgrims.
  • Following earlier advisories, many Indians, particularly students, have already returned to India.
  • Several nationals, including students and pilgrims in Tehran, have been relocated to safer locations within Iran.
  • The government is assisting Indian citizens travelling to Armenia and Azerbaijan so they can take commercial flights back to India.
  • Support includes help with visas, border crossings, and coordination with local authorities.
  • The Indian Embassy in Tehran remains in constant contact with the Indian community and is providing all possible assistance.
  • Indians planning to leave Iran via land borders have been urged to follow the advisory issued on March 9 by the embassy.

The couple got engaged on June 4 in Lucknow in a traditional ceremony. Their wedding, originally planned for November, was postponed due to Kuldeep’s international commitments during the multi-format series against South Africa.

Kuldeep, a key member of India’s white-ball setup, was retained by Delhi Capitals ahead of the IPL 2026 season. He is expected to join the team camp soon as preparations begin for the upcoming season, which starts on March 28. Signing of US trade deal put on hold until Washington decides new tariff structure: India

Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal informed that the deal was to be signed in March but the signing will now take place once the United States finalises a new architecture of global tariffs.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

India has put on hold the signing of a trade agreement with the United States in view of the recent US Supreme Court ruling that struck down the reciprocal tariffs imposed by the country’s President Donald Trump, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal said on Monday.

Addressing a press briefing in New Delhi, Agarwal informed that the deal was to be signed in March but the signing will now take place once the United States finalises a new architecture of global tariffs.

“US deal was to be signed in March. IEEPA (International Emergency Economic Powers Act) tariffs don’t exist per se due to US Supreme Court rulings now. Under Article 122, tariffs of 10% exist globally now. Any deal that India signs will be signed against a tariff structure. US is trying to recreate a tariff architecture globally. Once US creates that, it will be better to sign then. Actual signing will be done when the new architecture of tariffs globally is done by the US,” the Commerce Secretary said.

US President Donald Trump had announced a trade deal with India earlier this year. Under the deal, the US would impose 18 per cent tariffs on India, with the White House claiming that New Delhi would charge almost zero tariffs.

The US also removed the additional 25 per cent levy on Indian imports after Prime Minister Narendra Modi purportedly agreed to stop purchasing Russian Federation oil.

The deal sparked criticism from the Opposition parties as they claimed that PM Modi was “pressurised” to agree to an unfair deal. The Opposition argued that the US was set to benefit more from the deal than India.

They also questioned the government’s decision to allow the US to enter India’s agriculture sector. The government, however, hit back saying India’s dairy and agriculture sectors have been protected in the deal.

The development to put the signing of the India-US trade deal on hold also comes amid the raging conflict in the Middle East. With the supply of energy products disrupted due to Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Trump has also given India and some other countries permission to purchase Russian crude oil for 30 days.

When asked about India’s purchase of Russian oil, Agarwal said that India continues to source oil from Russia and noted an increase in the volume as well.

“We are buying Russian oil. There has been an increase in buying from Russia,” he added.

RCB home games return: Chinnaswamy Stadium cleared for IPL matches

The decision came after a review by the home minister and an expert committee, who assessed the stadium’s safety and infrastructure measures.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Fans will soon be able to watch their favourite team play at home, as the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has received formal approval from the Karnataka government to resume Indian Premier League (IPL) matches at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

The decision came after a review by the home minister and an expert committee, who assessed the stadium’s safety and infrastructure measures. The announcement followed a meeting with KSCA officials and a detailed inspection on March 13.

KSCA spokesperson Vinay Mruthyunjaya confirmed the news:

“We are extremely happy to inform you that the government has permitted us to play IPL matches at Chinnaswamy Stadium. All five matches proposed by RCB will be played here, and the playoffs and finals are also likely to be held at the stadium,” he said.

Mruthyunjaya added that the government issued a formal permission letter and emphasized that all safety guidelines and standard operating procedures must be strictly followed.

“As committed by the KSCA, all Phase 1 works have been completed to the satisfaction of the Expert Committee. They conducted a personal inspection across the stadium to verify the work done,” he explained. The committee also suggested additional safety measures to be implemented on match days.

KSCA Vice President Sujith Somasundar highlighted the importance of public awareness:

“The committee recommended a strong social media campaign to educate spectators on the new safety measures, including exit points, ambulance services, and other arrangements. We want fans to know how to attend a match of this magnitude safely,” he said.

With all safety measures completed, the stadium is now cleared to host matches at full capacity of 33,000 spectators.

The KSCA will soon hand over the stadium to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as per the existing stadium agreement and assist the franchise in maintaining safety standards.

Phase 1 work, carried out based on recommendations from the police department, included widening stadium gates, increasing exit points, creating holding areas, and improving entry and exit movement for spectators.

With formal clearance now in place, Bengaluru is set to host IPL matches once again at the iconic Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Dubai’s aviation hub trembles: War-risk insurance surges, global airlines pull back

Several global airlines suspend Dubai routes as war-risk insurance premiums surge following a drone incident near the airport, raising fresh concerns about aviation safety across the Gulf region.

Statesman News Service | Mumbai |

Dubai’s status as one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs faced fresh turbulence on Monday after flights were briefly suspended at Dubai International Airport (DXB) following a drone-related incident near the airport.

Authorities said the move was a precaution to ensure passenger and staff safety. The Dubai Media Office confirmed that emergency teams responded after a drone struck near the airport, sparking a fire in the vicinity. Civil Defence contained the blaze, and no injuries were reported.

The incident comes at a time when global airlines are already scaling back operations to Dubai and other Gulf destinations amid security concerns tied to the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Insurance shock and airspace fears drive airline suspensions

Several international carriers have temporarily suspended services to Dubai and neighbouring cities, citing concerns over airspace safety and sharply rising insurance costs.

British Airways has cancelled flights to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Amman, Bahrain, Doha and Tel Aviv. Routes to Abu Dhabi are expected to remain suspended for a longer period. The Lufthansa Group – including Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Swiss, and Brussels Airlines – has halted services to Dubai and Abu Dhabi until at least mid-March, with further reviews planned.

Other airlines have also pulled back. KLM has cancelled Dubai flights until March 28, Cathay Pacific until March 31, and Finnair until March 29. Singapore Airlines has paused services until at least mid-March.

Industry officials say the decisions are closely tied to war-risk insurance premiums, which have surged sharply (300-1,000%) for aircraft flying through Gulf airspace. When premiums climb steeply, airline risk committees reassess whether operating those routes remains viable.

The drone-related fire reported near Dubai International Airport on Monday, though quickly contained, is likely to reinforce those concerns.

A global hub under pressure

Dubai International Airport handled more than 95 million passengers in 2025, connecting travellers to over 260 destinations across six continents. The airport has long served as a key transit point linking Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas.

For now, however, the network is relying largely on its home carriers. Emirates and Etihad continue to operate services and are gradually restoring schedules, but the temporary withdrawal of several international airlines has reduced the volume of connecting traffic that normally flows through the hub.

In global aviation, hubs thrive on international airline networks feeding passengers from multiple regions. When those connections slow or stop, even briefly, the ripple effects can be felt across tourism, transit, travel and airport operations.

Conflict continues to shadow regional aviation

The aviation disruptions come against the backdrop of rising tensions in the Middle East.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said Iran’s military capabilities had been heavily damaged by American strikes but stopped short of declaring the conflict over.

“I think I’d just say they’re decimated,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One. “If we left right now, it would take them years to rebuild.”

He also said the United States retained the capability to strike additional Iranian targets if necessary.

For airlines operating in the region, however, the immediate concern remains safety and operational risk. Many carriers say services will resume only once conditions in regional airspace stabilise and insurance costs return to manageable levels.

‘Demoralising for 13,000 officers’: CAPF bill faces backlash from veterans

Retired paramilitary officers have raised concerns that the proposed CAPF Bill could affect implementation of a Supreme Court verdict aimed at improving promotion opportunities for thousands of cadre officers.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

A proposed law governing India’s Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) has triggered concern among several retired officers, who say the move could weaken a recent Supreme Court judgment meant to improve career prospects for thousands of cadre officers.

The controversy comes as the government is considering the Central Armed Police Forces (General Administration & Regulation) Bill 2026, which retired officers believe could alter how senior posts are filled in the paramilitary forces. CAPFs, including the CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP and SSB, together deploy nearly 10 lakh personnel and play a critical role in guarding India’s borders, protecting strategic installations and conducting counter-insurgency operations.

For years, officers within the Central Armed Police Forces have watched many of the top positions in their own organisations go to Indian Police Service (IPS) officers on deputation. Cadre officers, who spend their entire careers serving in these forces, have long argued that they should have a clearer chance to rise to the highest ranks themselves.

The issue eventually reached the Supreme Court. In a ruling delivered on 23 May 2025, the Supreme Court backed CAPF cadre officers, saying they should be given the same status as other organised Group A services in the government. The court also said that senior posts, up to the rank of Inspector General, should, over time, be filled by promoting officers from within the CAPFs themselves. A review petition filed by the government was later dismissed in October 2025.

‘Bill may continue IPS dominance in CAPFs’

SK Sood, retired Additional Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF), said the government is presenting the legislation as an administrative reform, but officers see it differently.

“The proposed bill by the government is supposedly aimed at bringing administrative reforms in the CAPFs,” he said. “However, this is only a euphemism for the continuation of the domination of IPS officers at higher levels.”

Sood noted that cadre officers had fought a lengthy legal battle that culminated in a favourable Supreme Court ruling recognising their rights. The government, he said, had earlier indicated that it would implement the court’s decision.

“The government, in their press briefing in July, had announced that the cabinet had taken a decision to implement the SC order and give all benefits of ‘organised Group A Service’ at par with all other services,” Sood said.

According to him, this included filling posts up to the rank of Inspector General through promotions within the forces and granting non-functional financial upgradation, a system meant to reduce stagnation in government services.

However, he said the government later filed an appeal, which was rejected by the Supreme Court.

“Introduction of this bill is disheartening and demoralising to over 12,000 officers of these forces,” Sood said.

He also questioned the continued deputation of IPS officers to the CAPFs.

“Continuation of IPS officers in these forces is also a serious compromise with the national security, as they have no connection with ground-level issues, operations philosophy or ethos of these forces. Besides this, they come to these forces for a short-term deputation and are unable to grasp the festering issues of these forces.”

Sood argued that instead of enabling reforms mandated by the Supreme Court, the bill could hinder them. “Details of the bill must be put in the public domain to enable a detailed scrutiny, besides calling the affected parties to present the entire gamut of issues involved,” he added.

‘Supreme Court verdict meant to bring professional leadership’

Retired BSF Inspector General MS Malhi said the Supreme Court judgment was the result of a long struggle by CAPF officers seeking professional recognition within their own forces.

“The Supreme Court judgement is the culmination of decades-long struggle of CAPF cadre officers to bring professionalism, domain expertise and strategic thinking in the higher echelons of all CAPFs,” he said.

Malhi said implementing the ruling would allow leadership to emerge from within the forces themselves.

“The implementation of this judgement will bring in home-grown leadership in all CAPFs, will raise their morale and help in further strengthening the national security,” he added.

A serving officer, who did not wish to be identified, also stressed the importance of respecting the court’s ruling.

“Institutional power should never override judicial authority,” the officer said. “The 23 May 2025 Supreme Court ruling must be respected.”

‘Stagnation has long plagued CAPF officers’

HR Singh, former Additional Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and president of the Alliance of All Ex-Paramilitary Forces Welfare Association, said promotion delays have long affected cadre officers.

Singh, a 1975-batch officer who served for nearly four decades, including in the National Security Guard, said the problem is particularly severe in some forces.

“I retired as ADG in June 2013 after serving for over 38 years in various operational theatres in various capacities. I also served for 6 years in the elite force, the National Security Guards, and for over 2 years as Director of the CRPF Academy. In a batch of 34, only 2 officers were able to reach the level of ADG.”

“Likewise, our 13,000 cadre officers of CAPF have been facing stagnations at various ranks, and the situation in CRPF & BSF is worse, as even after putting in 16 years of service, the Assistant Commandants have not even got the first promotion to the rank of Dy Commandant, whereas the officers of the 2012 batch of IPS with even lesser service, i.e., 14 years, are joining CAPF as Deputy Inspector General of Police. This situation is quite demoralising for our cadre officers,” he said.

The legal battle over promotions, Singh said, lasted more than 13 years before the Supreme Court delivered its verdict on 23 May 2025, ruling in favour of CAPF cadre officers. A review petition filed by the government was later dismissed in October that year.

When the judgment was not implemented within the expected timeframe, officers approached the court again.

“When the Ministry of Home Affairs did not take any action within the time frame of 6 months to implement the judgement, our officers filed a contempt case, which was heard on 10th February and 10th March 2026.”

During the hearing, he said, the government indicated it was considering bringing the statutory intervention.

“It has been learnt that the cabinet has approved the CAPFs (General Administration & Regulation) Bill 2026, which is likely to be put up during the current budget session of the Parliament just to nullify the Apex court’s judgement,” Singh said.

He urged the Prime Minister, the Union Home Minister and the leadership of the CAPFs to implement the court’s ruling.

“The future of about 13000 cadre officers is not adversely affected. This is a matter of national security, as CAPFs have been guarding sensitive Indo-Pak, Indo-Bangladesh, Indo-China and Indo-Nepal & Bhutan borders, as well as the internal security, the security of all high-risk installations and VIPs.”

Introducing legislation without wider consultation, he argued, could have serious implications.

“Now when the world is passing through a very uncertain and unsecured geopolitical situation, such a bill should not be introduced in haste in Parliament without being referred to the stakeholders and without being referred to the parliamentary standing committee on home affairs for wider discussions. The CAPFs are professional forces; their officers have given supreme sacrifices for the nation, and a large number of their officers sustained severe injuries, losing limbs while facing the gravest threats from the foreign terrorists and Naxals. The PM and the HM have been full of praise for their remarkable dedication and professionalism on many occasions. The HM has declared 31st March 2026 as Naxal-free India based on the prolonged operations conducted by CAPFs.”

“It seems to me that Hindus are not insecure, but CAPFs are,” Singh added.

Punjab to host Asia Cup Hockey in Jalandhar and Mohali, confirms CM Bhagwant Mann

CM stated that the matches are scheduled to take place at Mohali and the Burlton Park stadium in Jalandhar. The final schedule for the tournament is expected to be finalized by the 21st or 22nd of this month.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday announced that the state has secured the hosting rights for the prestigious Asia Cup Hockey Championship. Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh to mark the fourth anniversary of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, the Chief Minister stated that the matches are scheduled to take place at Mohali and the Burlton Park stadium in Jalandhar. He noted that the final details and schedule for the tournament are expected to be finalized by the 21st or 22nd of this month, marking a significant return of major international hockey to the state.

During the briefing, the Chief Minister launched a blistering attack on political rivals, specifically targeting Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa. Mann leveled serious allegations against Randhawa, labeling him the “leader of gangsters” and accusing the former minister of patronizing criminal elements during his tenure. He further took a swipe at Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal’s recent remarks on tackling crime, asserting that, unlike the previous administrations, the AAP government does not provide political tickets or official posts to individuals with gang affiliations.

Reflecting on his government’s four-year track record, the Chief Minister highlighted several administrative and welfare milestones. He claimed that the state successfully resolved its power crisis by operationalizing its own coal mines, thereby eliminating the “commission culture” associated with previous regimes. Mann also detailed the state’s agricultural relief measures, noting that for the first time, flood-affected farmers were provided compensation at the rate of Rs 20,000 per acre. He criticized the Central Government for withholding the Rural Development Fund (RDF), despite the state amending legislation to meet central requirements, and blamed former CM Captain Amarinder Singh for the initial misuse of these funds.

The Chief Minister also emphasized the state’s commitment to sports and women’s welfare, announcing the establishment of 6,000 indoor gyms across Punjab. He reaffirmed that the government has fulfilled its major promises, including free bus travel for women and the distribution of 13.70 lakh sanitary pads. Contrasting his administration’s performance with the BJP-led Center, Mann characterized the BJP’s past promises of financial transfers and job creation as “mere rhetoric,” while asserting that Punjab has maintained a clean record without a single competitive exam paper leak in four years.

‘You plan to steal the ICC trophy?’: Ex-Players Akmal, Shehzad blast Pakistan after Bangladesh ODI series loss

Former players Kamran Akmal and Ahmed Shehzad lauched scathing criticism of the team’s performance and leadership.

Pakistan’s cricketers have come under heavy scrutiny following their 2-1 ODI series defeat to Bangladesh, with former players Kamran Akmal and Ahmed Shehzad launching scathing criticism of the team’s performance and leadership. The Men in Green, led by Shaheen Afridi, suffered an 11-run loss in the series-deciding match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

Pakistan entered the series without senior batters Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman, who were dealing with injuries sustained during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The team management opted to field a relatively inexperienced side, giving opportunities to younger players. However, the lineup struggled under pressure and failed to capitalise on the chance, raising concerns about the team’s strategic planning and mental toughness.

Reacting strongly to the outcome, former wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal expressed serious concerns over the state of Pakistan cricket and questioned the lack of accountability within the Pakistan Cricket Board.

“For god’s sake, think about Pakistan cricket. Just see the levels we have gone down to. The Netherlands must be thinking that if they get to play a three-match ODI series against Pakistan, they can attain Test status, as they can also beat us. You have made a mockery of your cricket. You people just don’t care,” Akmal said on the ‘Game Plan’ show.

He also criticised tactical decisions in the decider, asking, “You have lost the match. What experiments are you doing? It was a good pitch. Why did you choose to bowl? Why didn’t you bat? They would have scored 350. Litton Das was slow in the end, that’s why Bangladesh got restricted to 290. It was a series decider. When you do not win the series against teams, how will you progress? You plan to steal the ICC trophy?”

Former batter Ahmed Shehzad echoed Akmal’s concerns, highlighting Pakistan’s ongoing struggles and warning that the team’s standards are declining at an alarming rate.

“After the pathetic T20 World Cup campaign, you did not make any changes. You brought youngsters out of nowhere. Now you have lost the series and you are giving excuses of having youngsters in the playing XI. When you don’t accept your mistakes, you will never move ahead in life,” Shehzad said on his YouTube channel.

Shehzad also questioned Afridi’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss in the deciding match, saying, “It was a good pitch. You should have batted and put runs on the board, then bowled under lights. When your senior players behave like this, what do you expect from the youngsters?”

Bangladesh’s victory was built on a composed century from Tanzid Hasan, who struck 107 off 107 deliveries to help the hosts post 290/5. Pakistan’s reply saw a determined 106 from Salman Ali Agha, but the visitors fell short at 279 all out. Taskin Ahmed was instrumental with the ball, claiming four wickets to seal the win for Bangladesh.

The ODI series defeat follows Pakistan’s disappointing T20 World Cup campaign, where they were eliminated in the Super 8 stage, marking the fourth consecutive ICC tournament in which the team failed to reach the semi-finals. Shehzad warned that Pakistan’s international stature is rapidly declining, stating, “You are becoming an associate team. People are now treating Pakistan like Zimbabwe. And then you say we crashed out of the World Cup due to run rate. Have some shame.”

Both Akmal and Shehzad’s remarks underline growing frustration over Pakistan cricket’s management, tactical approach, and inability to address long-term structural issues despite repeated failures on the global stage.

‘Officers removed will not handle any poll duties’: EC replaces Bengal’s acting DGP, Kolkata Police Commissioner

DG, Law & Order, Vineet Kumar Goyal, who has also been removed, is a former Kolkata Police Commissioner, who was removed from the post soon after his name was dragged into controversy after the RG Kar rape and murder case of a junior doctor in August 2024.

The Election Commission of India has issued directions to the West Bengal government regarding the transfer and posting of senior police officers ahead of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly Elections 2026. A key directive is that officers removed from their current positions will not be assigned any election-related duties until the conclusion of the elections.

The poll body emphasised that the officers transferred out shall not be posted in any poll-related positions until the completion of the assembly elections, underscoring the poll body’s commitment to ensuring neutrality and fair conduct of the elections. The Commission stated that the poll preparedness review had prompted these postings.

The transfer orders follow the announcement of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 schedule by the ECI on 15 March 2026. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, in his press conference to announce the election dates on Sunday, assured that elections in West Bengal would be violence-free and peaceful.

Elections in West Bengal are scheduled to be held in two phases on April 23 and 29. Counting will be held on May 4.

Who replaces whom?

In a letter addressed to the Chief Secretary, Government of West Bengal, the Commission announced the replacement of key police officers in West Bengal, including the acting Director General of Police (DGP) Peeyush Pandey and Kolkata Police Commissioner Supratim Sarkar. Both Pandey and Sarkar were appointed on January 30.

Siddh Nath Gupta, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1992 batch, has been made the new DGP, replacing acting DGP Pandey. Similarly, Ajay Kumar Nand, a 1996-batch IPS officer, had been made the new Commissioner of Kolkata Police, in place of Sarkar.

Director General, Law & Order, Vineet Kumar Goyal, had also been removed and replaced by Ajay Mukud Ranade, a 1995-batch IPS officer, but as Additional Director General, Law & Order.

Goyal is a former Kolkata Police Commissioner, who was removed from the post soon after his name was dragged into controversy after the ghastly rape and murder of a junior doctor of state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata within the hospital premises in August 2024.

The EC also ordered the posting of Natarajan Ramesh Babu, a 1991-batch IPS officer, as the Director General, Correctional Services. Also, Ajay Mukund Ranade (IPS 1995) has been posted as ADG & IGP (Law & Order), West Bengal.

The Commission has directed that these transfers be implemented with immediate effect, and a compliance report confirming the joining of the officers must be submitted by 3:00 PM on March 16, 2026. A copy of the letter was also sent to the state’s Chief Electoral Officer as well.

Yesterday, the EC had ordered the transfers of Chief Secretary, Nandini Chakraborty, and Home Secretary, Jagdish Prasad Meena, and that both will not be involved in any kind of election-related duty.

Dushyant Nariala (IAS-1993) has been appointed as Chief Secretary, Govt. of West Bengal, and Sanghamitra Ghosh (IAS-1997) as Principal Secretary, Home & Hill Affairs. While Dushyant Nariala replaced Chakraborty, Shanghamitra Ghosh replaced Meena.
