‘Krrish’, ‘Ra.One’ no match to ‘Shaktimaan’: Mukesh Khanna

IANS | Mumbai |

Actor Mukesh Khanna says superhero movies Krrish and Ra.One cannot match the level of
his iconic TV show Shaktimaan despite
their big budget.

Khanna essayed the roles of Shaktimaan and his alter ego Pandit Gangadhar Vidyadhar Mayadhar
Omkarnath Shastri on the show.

Citing an example from Natwarlal, the actor said
the film had a song which fascinated children so much that they went to watch
the film with parents.

Khanna said the trick is to please the children, so that
even parents are excited to watch a film, just like he did with his TV show.

“That time, content was there but nobody followed it
up. I followed it up with Shaktimaan.
I waited four years for others to make a super hero project but nobody did. So,
I made ‘Aryamaan’. Today there is Krrish
and Ra.One, but they are yet to reach
the level of Shaktimaan,” Khanna
said.

Earlier this year, the 58-year-old actor said he was in
talks to bring back Shaktimaan on
TV.

When asked about the progress, Khanna said he is still
committed to bringing the project.

“We are talking to Doordarshan, they are ready to give
us a slot. We are talking to satellite channels, there were talks even for a
web series. Let’s see. I don’t know where it will be launched. But I have to
bring back Shaktimaan. And I have to be Shaktimaan.”

The actor says children remember him for his iconic role
even today.

“I have lost 10-15 kgs. I need to reduce 5-10 kgs more.
I can’t let anyone else play that character. Wherever I go, the kids chant
‘Shaktimaan’. They know me as that. I have to come again as Shaktimaan but we
will have a modern setting.”

The actor, who is the chairperson of Children Film Society
of India, said he cannot make a film on Shaktimaan as it will be a
conflict of interest but hopes to pass content driven films for children under
his chairmanship.

Demonetisation: New currency notes to boost electronic payments

SNS | New Delhi |

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s move to replace current
high-value currency notes with new ones to fight black money issue would,
perhaps, provide a major boost to electronic payments and dent
unaccounted black money.

“If most of the black money is brought into bank accounts or
into the tax net, there will be far less reason to deal only in cash, and far
more reasons to transact through electronic payments,” NASSCOM
president R Chandrashekhar said on Wednesday.

Welcoming the move, the National Association of Software and
Services Companies said, “This move is a masterstroke that will make a
major dent on unaccounted or black money, rendering it valueless unless it is
taken to a bank to be exchanged, potentially bringing it into the tax net”.

“It will also accelerate the push toward electronic payment,
which presently has relatively little penetration in India, where cash accounts
for 78 per cent of all transactions by value according to the Reserve Bank of
India (RBI)” it added.

Talking about e-commerce, the statement clarified that the
move will reduce logistic cost which arises due to cash on delivery (COD).

In a surprise move, Modi on
late Tuesday  declared a decisive war against black money and
announced that high denomination notes of Rs.500 and Rs.1,000 will no longer be
legal tender.

“New notes of Rs.2,000 and Rs.500, with completely new
design, will be introduced,” Modi said in his address to the nation.

UP police on alert, traders bodies asked to cooperate

Uttar Pradesh police has been alerted to maintain strict vigil near banks and other places to maintain law and order in the wake of decision to demonetise Rs.500 and Rs.1000 currency notes from Wednesday.

PTI | Lucknow |

Uttar Pradesh police has been alerted to maintain strict vigil near banks and other places to maintain law and order in the wake of decision to demonetise Rs.500 and Rs.1000 currency notes from Wednesday.
After the announcement caught people by surprise, long queues were seen at ATMs and petrol pumps on Tuesday night.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has urged the Centre to ensure that the decision to demonetise Rs.1,000 and Rs.500 denomination currency notes did not have an adverse impact on the poor, farmers and villagers.
He urged the Centre to arrange for special camps in villages for exchanging currency notes saying banks were not easily accessible in the rural areas.
The situation became difficult for commuters on Wednesday morning with many petrol pumps closing down claiming that they were out of stock, while in shops, customers were turned away by traders, who were not ready to accept notes of Rs.500 and Rs.1,000 denominations.
“Director General of Police Javeed Ahmad has issued directives to all district police chiefs stating that there may be serious law and order issues after the announcement.
“Patrolling and visibility (of force) should be there at market areas, near banks, post offices,” Additional Superintendent of Police in DGP office Rahul Srivastava said.
He said police officers have been directed to talk to traders bodies and petrol pumps and keep an eye on situation in rural areas.
Police has been deployed at petrol pumps to control the crowd.

Amitabh Bachchan sings Ganesh aarti in ‘Sarkar 3’

IANS | Mumbai |

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has sung a Ganesh aarti song for
the upcoming film Sarkar 3, helmed by filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma.

The 74-year-old thespian on Tuesday night shared two
photographs of himself performing an aarti on a beach for a scene in the
film.

“In prayer for Sarkar 3 and the aarti for Ganesh,
which I have sung,” Amitabh tweeted.

The scene was shot at the Juhu beach here, and Big B said
the serious look for the scene — as seen in the photographs — is deliberate.

“In prayer for the aarti for ‘Sarkar 3’ on the beach of
the Arabian Sea off Juhu and behind one of the prominent hotels of the area.
The sinister serious looks even for the Ganesh aarti, is deliberate and
pertinent for the scene,” he wrote on his blog.

“The aarti has been sung by me. No, it is not the same
one I did for Siddhivinak Temple, it is differently placed, more pertinent to
the events of the story of the film,” he added.

Asam Sahitya Sabha prez talks of militancy in 1st English work

PTI |

Asam Sahitya Sabha president Dhrubajyoti Borah traces the journey of a group of militants towards an elusive freedom and an uncertain future in his first English book.
The Sleepwalker's Dream: A Novel is about June, Ron and several other rebels fleeing their hideout in Bhutan after an army attack along with their injured unconscious leader, who is unlikely to survive the ordeal of their journey towards the Assam border.
With winter approaching, they desperately need to find a temporary shelter and miraculously their leader emerges from his coma and is able to guide them to a cave which has supplies of food and other essentials.
As the only woman in the group, June sometimes feels isolated though she does sentry duty like her male comrades and keeps herself in good physical shape.
But her memories keep taking her back to her long-lost family, her village, her innocent childhood and the tragic circumstances under which she had become an insurgent.
Borah, in his book published by Delhi-based Speaking Tiger, gives life to Ron when he, too, is flooded by his own
memories of his boyhood and the early days of passionate commitment and high adventure.
On his first novel in English and the challenges and pleasures of this transition, the Guwahati-based Assamese writer and novelist said, “It's not really a transition. I am an Assamese Indian writer first. But I had thought that if a good publisher accepts my book then I would at least know that I can write in English.”
“Little did I know that the manuscript has to pass through a tight scrutiny of a strict editor. Writing in English was both a challenge and a pleasure and also a journey of exploration of the possibilities of literary expression and bridge building,” said the writer, who is a physician by profession.
Asked if it was difficult to write about a very complex and misunderstood subject revolving around a group of insurgents, the president of the apex literary body of the state said, “The insurgents are from among us.
They may be friends, friends of friends or their relatives. Some people may have first hand experience of them, others may have suffered grievously at their hands. But they are not a people apart. They belong to us.”
“Their lives are also beset with the same fears, sorrows and uncertainties as us. Only, they thought and acted differently. Middle class prudence and instincts of self-preservation hold many of us back, but they take the plunge in pursuit of their dreams, however ill-advised or wrong they may seem. Understanding them is like understanding one's own self. It is not easy and it needs patience and compassion.”
On how he developed his characters, especially the female insurgent in his novel, Bora said, “A character in a novel is entirely a creation of the author.
With flesh-and-blood experience gathered over the years from different sources and persons (not all of them insurgents).
“A character plays a definite role in the narrative of a novel, in that fictional environment, just like people of flesh and blood play a definite role in the real world. The female insurgent plays a pivotal role in this novel and I have tried to see things from her perspective, believing (I hope I am right) that in this way I can recreate an insightful and meaningful story.”
On which aspect of the story appealed to him the most, Borah said, “The absurdities of human existence in the face of adversity and the ingenuity and desperate courage people call upon to survive; the lust for life and the search for meaning-these elements in the story appeal to me most.”
Asked if any of the characters in the novel were influenced by real-life people, he said, “Nothing can be created from nothing. As I have said, many ingredients go into creating the world of the novel. It has to have its own sun, moonlight, wind, rain and snow.”
“And its own situations populated by its own people, birds, animals and plants. It is filtered and crystallised through the author's imaginative mind and does not necessarily reflect anybody in particular or even the real world”, said Borah, who has a literary career spanning over three decades publishing many critically acclaimed works of fiction and non-fiction, including novels, monographs on history, travelogues and collections of articles”.

RBI may allow forex hedging by MNC subsidiaries

The RBI, which had first announced the move in the October policy review, has invited comments on the draft rules by November 11.

PTI |

The Reserve Bank on Friday came out with the draft guidelines for centralised hedging for local subsidiaries of foreign companies.
The overseas parent of a company or its central treasury can hedge the currency risks arising from genuine current account exposures of the local subsidiary to better manage the latter’s currency risk, the RBI said in a notification.
The RBI, which had first announced the move in the October policy review, has invited comments on the draft rules by November 11.
The purpose of the new policy is “to provide greater flexibility for hedging the currency risks arising from current account transactions of domestic subsidiaries of multinationals by the parent or any non-resident group entity”, the central bank said.
It is proposed that such companies will be able to hedge in all foreign currency-rupee derivatives. But to avail of the facility, the foreign entity will have to be incorporated here, as India is member of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the draft guidelines said.
It may approach a registered investment bank which handles the forex transactions of its subsidiary for hedging the currency risk of and on the latter’s behalf, the RBI said, adding the foreign entity can also approach the i-bank either directly or through its banker overseas.

Udja Re: Shraddha Kapoor’s rocks ‘Rock On!! 2’

SNS |

As Rock On!! 2 is nearing its release date, another track from the film, Udja re, is out.

What’s striking about the song is that actress Shraddha Kapoor has lent her voice for it.

Occasionally incorporating high and low notes, Shraddha’s playback singing sets the tone of the song which is ‘set yourself free’.

Featuring the actress in an on-stage performance, it marks her first take for an aerial act and she looks breathtakingly gorgeous with her graceful moves.

The 29-year-old performs sections of contemporary dance which add to the visual appeal.

The empowering lyrics of Udja re have been penned by veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar and the music has been composed by Shankar Ehsaan and Loy.

The song is spectacularly choreographed by Bosco Caesar.

Also starring Farhan Akhtar, Arjun Rampal, Purab Kohli, Shashank Arora, Prachi Desai, and Shahana Goswami, the second part has been directed by Shujaat Saudagar.

Produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under the banner of Excel Entertainment presented by Eros International, the movie is all set to release on November 11.

Yaya Toure apologises to Man City for ‘misunderstandings’

Toure has scored 75 goals in 267 matches with City since coming from Barcelona in 2010

IANS |

Ivorian football player Yaya Toure has apologised to his team Manchester City for the “misunderstandings from the past” and said he wants to “help” it “succeed further.”
In a statement issued by the club’s website on Friday, Toure said: “I wish to apologise – on behalf of myself and those who represent me – to the management team and all those working at the club for the misunderstandings from the past.”
“Those statements do not represent my views on the club or the people who work there. I am immensely proud to have played a part in the club’s history and want to help City succeed further. I live to play football and entertain the fans,” he added.
Pep Guardiola, coach of the ‘Citizens’, had made clear that Toure, 33, would not play in the first team, if his agent Dimitri Selcuk does not apologise for criticising the coach for leaving the player off the list for the Champions League.
Toure has scored 75 goals in 267 matches with City since coming from Barcelona in 2010 for £24 million pounds ($30 million).
“I would like to thank all of the fans for their messages through this difficult period. This means a great deal to me and my family,” Toure concluded in the letter.

Premier League Preview: Conte’s Chelsea host Koeman’s Everton

While a Chelsea win is the likely outcome, one can expect Everton to make life difficult for the Blues!

SNS |

An increasingly confident Chelsea host an inconsistent but dangerous Everton side in the showpiece English Premier League tie late on Saturday.
Chelsea have found their swagger of late, banging in the goals but will be wary of the Ronald Koeman’s men who are just two places and four points behind them in the table.
While a Chelsea win is the likely outcome, one can expect Everton to make life difficult for the Blues!
Chelsea
Chelsea are among the most in-form sides in the Premier League, having picked up steam after their damaging defeat to Arsenal in September.
Manager Antonio Conte has managed to stamp his style into a side that horribly underperformed last season, making his unorthodox 3-4-3 formation work with spectacular results
Eden Hazard’s talent had never been in doubt, rather his temperament, but the diminutive winger has been proving his doubters wrong with some sensational displays recently. Along with him Chelsea have the Premier League’s top-scorer Diego Costa, to thank for their recent resurgence.
Costa simply can’t stop scoring at the moment and with a solidly stacked midfield behind him, it is not hard to understand why. Summer signing N’Golo Kante has been excellent in midfield but it is the unheralded Victor Moses who has raised quite a few eyebrows with his displays of late.
Chelsea have had Kurt Zouma and Cesc Fabregas return to training but they are unlikely to feature for the Everton game.
Everton
After a great start to the season which saw them win six out of seven games, Everton have been been humbled in recent weeks by the likes of Burnley and Bournemouth.
The fact that they held Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and then beat West Ham comprehensively over the weekend proves that the Toffees cannot be taken for granted.
Romelu Lukaku is Koeman’s main man up front, and the ex-Chelsea striker will feel he has a point to prove against his old club. The Belgian is among the Premier League’s leading goal scorers with 7 strikes to his name and and may just add another at Stamford Bridge.
The defence is marshalled by Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka who will have to manage an essential balance in their 4-3-3 formation which is built to attack.
Everton are still without the services of injured trio of Leighton Baines, James Mc Carthy and Arouna Kane and will have to make do without the suspended Idrissa Gueye.
Maareten Steklenburg, however, is fit to play and should start in goal which is a big boost for manager Koeman.
Super Stat: Everton manager Ronald Koeman is unbeaten at Stamford Bridge as a Premier League manager, having collected four points from his two previous trips!
