Burn your body fat in an apt way

The best exercise for burning fat need not be a high-intensity exercise, mix up your moderate-intensity exercise schedules and do them daily interchanging.

Deepa Gupta | New Delhi |

The best exercise for burning fat need not be a high-intensity exercise. You can mix up your moderate-intensity exercise schedules and do them daily interchanging with one-another turn by turn. The most important thing is to enjoy your workout whichever you may do.

It may be walking, easy jogging, bicycling, swimming, aerobics, yoga, dancing, badminton, football, tennis or any other sport of your choice. Challenge your body in a new way every day. Thus, maintain and attain your weight-loss by doing a variety of different physical activities.

Body fat starts burning when you exercise at an intensity where your heart rate is 60 to 70 percent of your maximum heart rate. The heart rate range may vary according to your age. In this zone, you’ll be breathing heavier, feeling increased exhaustion, sweating and probably dehydrated.

You need at least 45 minutes of moderate exercise to mobilize your body to dip into fat reserves and burn stored fat. Intensify your workout slowly and steadily increasing time, speed and energy level so that more fat can be consumed as fuel. It is safest to increase the time by 10 percent per week.

Warm up at an easy pace in initial five to 10 minutes at low intensity. It will prepare your body to exercise. Then start at an intensity of 50 to 60 percent of your maximum heart rate doing any workout that may result in breathing harder than usual. Its duration should be between 30 to 60 minutes. After the completion of your workout, cool down with five to 10 minutes of low-intensity exercises. It’s the time for stretching of the muscles now used in your workout regimen. That’s the end of your session.

Your workout pattern shouldn’t be same every day. Change it to get your body build muscles and burn calories. You can acquire your fitness goal more quickly by adding bursts of intensity. Like, if you are walking, you may include a hill climb or climbing of stairs on and off. Maintain a good posture always while exercising.

Hormone levels for most people peak at 6 p.m. Exercising three hours before or after the peak may give you your best workout for both endurance and building muscles. Muscles are warmer and more flexible at this time than in morning. You may be able to work out harder and faster in the evening time. You can exert more feeling less exhausted. It may help regulate the amount of food you feel like eating for dinner. But, at the same time distraction and other commitments may make keep you from exercising at this time.

The key thing is to make a habit to do the physical workout at any time of the day suitable to you and follow it consistently. So, there is no prescribed time that can be considered as best to exercise. Do it any time that fits best into your schedule. Consistency is important here and not the time.

Two important things to be kept in mind:

Keep yourself away from the excuses not to exercise five to six days a week. Be honest with yourself and keep an exercise log.

Don’t indulge in eating more calories as a perk for your physical workout. To lose weight, you need to be selective about your food habits. Make a record of everything you eat. Look for the ways to amend bad eating habits if there are any.

Know your basic calorie per day metabolic rate and how many calories you burn while exercising. Stop drinking sodas, sugary fruit juices, sports drinks, milk tea or coffee. Stick to water and keep your body well hydrated. Eat healthy fibrous food- whole grains, fruits, veggies and nutrient-rich low-fat diet.

This way you’ll not only reduce your body weight but curb health risks too by making yourself more physically or mentally fit. The trick of weight-loss lies in your workout programme’s frequency, duration and intensity. Happy weight-loss!

Opposition disrupts J-K assembly proceedings

IANS | PTI |

Opposition members disrupted proceedings in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Wednesday after the Speaker disallowed discussions on civilian killings and a spike in militancy-related incidents in the valley.

The opposition members stood up from their seats and caused an uproar as Speaker Kavinder Gupta disallowed an adjournment motion moved by the National Conference (NC), Congress and Yusuf Tarigami of the CPI(M).

The House was scheduled to take up a discussion on Governor N.N. Vohra’s address made in the legislature on Tuesday.

Modi chairs BJP Parliamentary Meet; Triple Talaq Bill discussed

SNS | New Delhi |

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday chaired a key BJP Parliamentary Meet wherein discussions were held on the bill criminalising instant Triple Talaq.

“In today’s parliamentary party meeting, we discussed two important bills. the Constitution 123rd Amendment Bill which will give constitutional status to OBC Commission and the bill  which will end Triple Talaq and protect the rights of Muslim women,” Union Minister Ananth Kumar said after the meet concluded.

Modi arrived for the meeting in Parliament House at around 9.45 am and as per reports the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government sat together to chalk out a plan to counter the opposition in the upper house where discussion on the bill will begin post lunch.

BJP chief Amit Shah along with other senior leaders were present in the crucial meeting.

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, which makes instant triple illegal with up to three years in jail for the husband was listed for introduction in the Rajya Sabha by Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Tuesday.

However, the tabling of the bill was delayed to Wednesday as the Centre tried hard to build a consensus to ensure its smooth passage in the upper house where it does not enjoy brute majority.

The opposition parties including the Congress, Left, AIADMK and the DMK are in favour of sending the Muslim Women Protection of Rights in Marriage Bill 2017 to the Standing Committee but the government rejected the demand.

The amendments to the bill moved by the opposition too were rejected.

But the biggest bone of contention between the BJP and the opposition is the on the three-year jail term clause for the erring husband. The opposition has said that the clause can be misused by women to harass their husbands.

The bill could get stalled in the Rajya Sabha where government lacks a majority and it may be referred to a parliamentary committee for its review.

Ashes test: Starc ‘ready’ to go says Smith, Agar likely to sit out

PTI | Sydney |

Pace spearhead Mitchell Starc is in line to return to Australia’s bowling line-up with second spinner Ashton Agar unlikely to play in tomorrow’s final Ashes Test against England.

Captain Steve Smith said Starc was “ready to go” after bowling this week in the nets after missing the drawn fourth Melbourne Test with a bruised heel.

“Starcy has pulled up pretty well this morning and he says he’s ready to go. I guess that’s a good indication,” Smith told reporters on Wednesday.

Agar’s chances of playing in his fifth Test, bowling in spin tandem with Nathan Lyon, have also been downgraded with extra grass on the Sydney Cricket Ground pitch.

“The wicket’s got a fair bit of grass and looks to be a pretty good wicket,” Smith said.

“I’d say we’ll probably opt for just the one spinner.

Nathan’s done a terrific job throughout this series and I’d say we’ll go down that route.”

Australia have already clinched the Ashes with an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-Test series ahead of the Sydney finale.

Left-armer Starc is the leading wicket-taker in the series with 19 despite only playing three Tests and will boost Australia’s pace attack after he missed out in Melbourne, giving way to Jackson Bird who went wicketless.

Smith, who has dominated the series with three centuries in his tally of 604 runs in six innings at an astonishing average of 151, has been troubled this week by a sore back, but said he will play.

“A little bit stiff but nothing I haven’t dealt with before,” Smith said.

“I’ll have a good hit today, a catch, and I’ll be fine tomorrow.”

Smith has spent more than 31 hours at the batting crease against England in this series, becoming Australia’s first captain to score 600 or more runs in an Ashes campaign since Don Bradman.

The 604 runs Smith has scored is the fourth-most by a captain in an Ashes series, with the 810 Bradman scored in 1936-37 the high mark.

Another century in Sydney will see him join Bradman, Herbert Sutcliffe and Wally Hammond as the only men to score four hundreds in the same Ashes series.

The Australia skipper averages 63.55 in his 60 Tests which places him only behind Bradman’s pinnacle of 99.94.

Uber investors sell at big discount, but still make billions

AP | Detroit |

Investors in the Uber ride-hailing service didn’t get all they wanted in selling at least part of their holdings to a group led by Japanese technology conglomerate SoftBank.

But don’t show them too much sympathy.

Even though they sold at roughly a 30 per cent discount from what the shares were worth in 2016, those who invested early made nearly 100 times their initial stake, going from around 35 cents per share to just under USD 33, according to one investor who requested anonymity because the sales are private.

Uber was valued around USD 68.5 billion during a 2016 capital investment, but it dropped to somewhere above USD 48 billion in the SoftBank deal announced last week.

The reasons for the discount are many, among them the seemingly endless string of scandals, lawsuits and fights that plagued Uber through almost all of 2017. Also, competition has gotten tougher from Lyft and Grab in the US as well as Ola in India and several emerging services elsewhere.

During the past year, Uber has been rocked by revelations of rampant sexual harassment in the company, technological trickery designed to hinder regulators, and a yearlong cover- up of a hacking attack that stole personal information of 57 million passengers and 600,000 drivers.

Rohit Kulkarni, managing director of SharesPost, a company that analyzes private company investments, says three big events that happened around the time that SoftBank began courting investors combined to discount the shares.

Just before SoftBank’s intent to shop for shares was announced, regulators in London refused to renew the cab- hailing app’s license to operate. Then the data hack and cover-up were revealed, and the company told investors its third-quarter net loss had widened to USD 1.46 billion on huge legal costs.

The events helped SoftBank’s group get a better deal, Kulkarni says.

Many big Uber investors include venture capital firms that got in early. They hedged their bets, selling part of their stake to bring big profits to their shareholders while holding the rest for big gains if the company gets past the scandals, the investor said.

“This is still a good deal,” said Gartner analyst Michael Ramsey. “The earlier the investment, the bigger the payout.” All-in, the SoftBank group will pump about USD 9 billion into Uber, including $1.25 billion in new shares that were purchased at the 2016 valuation. SoftBank acquired about 15 percent of Uber, while other investors in its group got around 3 per cent.

The deal, due to close this month, also brings management stability to Uber, reducing the influence of ousted CEO Travis Kalanick. SoftBank, which has global investments in other ride-hailing companies, gets two seats on the board and will help Uber navigate the tough global competition, says Kulkarni.

Donald Trump threatens to cut off aid to Palestinians

IANS | Washington |

US President Donald Trump has raised the prospect of cutting off aid to the Palestinian territories unless its leaders agree to resume negotiations to broker a peace deal with Israel, the media reported.

“We pay the Palestinians hundred of millions of dollars a year and get no appreciation or respect. They don’t even want to negotiate a long overdue peace treaty with Israel,” Trump tweeted on Tuesday.

“We have taken Jerusalem, the toughest part of the negotiation, off the table, but Israel, for that, would have had to pay more. But with the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace, why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?”

Trump’s tweets came nearly a month after he became the first sitting US President to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, drawing Palestinians into the streets in protest and causing Palestinian leaders to reject the US’s decades-old role as the central negotiator in Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, reports CNN.

He also said he would move the US embassy there from Tel Aviv, where all other nations have their consulates.

The decision was overwhelmingly condemned at the UN, where 128 countries voted against Trump’s fulfilment of a campaign promise.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas claimed that Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem, which both Israelis and Palestinians claim as their capital, discredited the US as an honest broker in the peace process.

While Trump administration officials have said they expected a “cooling off period” with the Palestinians, Trump’s tweets on Tuesday signaled that the President has grown frustrated with Palestinians’ refusal to partake in a US-led peace process in the wake of his Jerusalem decision, CNN reported.

The tweets also came after the White House confirmed that the US plans to withhold some of its aid to Pakistan to pressure the country into better counterterrorism cooperation with the US.

The US had spent $616 million on aid to the Palestinian territories in 2016, according to the US Agency for International Development, which includes humanitarian assistance, private sector debt payments and infrastructure development assistance.

Jerusalem is one of the world’s most contested sites. Israel claims the whole of the city as its capital.

The Palestinians want East Jerusalem, occupied by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war, to be the capital of a future Palestinian state.

Anurag’s aggressive approach to filmmaking amazing: Aanand L. Rai

IANS | Mumbai |

Filmmaker Aanand L. Rai prefers to collaborate with those who make work enjoyable. He says Anurag Kashyap, with whom he has joined hands for Mukkabaaz, is one such director who is aggressive in his work.

Rai was present at a press conference for Mukkabaaz, his first venture with Kashyap, here in Mumbai on Tuesday.

He said: “I really enjoy making films. I have only one condition when it comes to making films, to make them with people with whom my wavelengths amtches. I enjoy working with them.

“I wanted to work with Anurag, and when he told me this story, I thought there won’t be a better opportunity than this one.”

“The love story is amazing with sports and politics in the backdrop. I don’t think anybody has spoken about it in such a realistic manner. The way Anurag makes films aggressively is always amazing and I think that is really important to me as a producer,” Rai added.

Mukkabaaz features Vineet Kumar Singh, Zoya Hussain, Ravi Kishan and Jimmy Shergill. Releasing on January 12, the film is directed by Kashyap and produced by Rai.

Rai is himself directing Zero, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif.

He said Zero is the growth which he has been wanting after Tanu Weds Manu Returns.

“It is an important film for me. See, with each film, you ask for some change and growth within yourself. After Tanu Weds Manu Returns, I was asking for some growth within myself and I thought I should tell this story.

“It has been a long process to write this story, taking it on the floors and now releasing it,” said Rai on Zero.

The title and teaser of the movie were launched on New Year’s Day.

“This film is taking longer than a normal story. So it became important for us to share the title and glimpse of the film with the audience. New Year was starting and we thought of releasing the teaser and now we have a year to complete our film,” he said.

On the teaser, Rai was asked if there is a reason behind using the “Jab Jab Phool Khile” song “Affoo Khudaya”.

He said: “I don’t want to talk about it here and just end it. There is a very interesting back story as to why we did it and I will give you more time very soon to talk and discuss it.”

Asked to comment on rumours about a sequel to Raanjhanaa part 2, Rai said: “I don’t understand why people are asking for ‘Raanjhanaa’ part 2. I don’t think every picture that people like should have a part 2.

“Making a sequel is never the intention of making a movie.”

“A film will be made if you have a story. And as far as the sequel of Raanjhanaa is concerned, the film was a complete story. Which I’ve already expressed and there will be no part 2 of the film. But I think Anurag Kashyap might have a Mukkabaaz part 2″

Will announce most “dishonest and corrupt” media awards: Prez Trump

PTI | Washington |

President Donald Trump who shares a bitter relationship with the mainstream American press has said he will announce the “most dishonest and corrupt” media awards next week.

Trump has been at loggerheads with several US mainstream media outlets, including the CNN, ABC News, The New York Times and the Washington Post among others.

He has quite often described these popular media houses as “fake” media.

The term is now popularly related to news with which one does not agree with.

“I will be announcing THE MOST DISHONEST & CORRUPT MEDIA AWARDS OF THE YEAR on Monday at 5:00 o’clock,” Trump said in a late-night tweet.

“Subjects will cover Dishonesty & Bad Reporting in various categories from the Fake News Media. Stay tuned!” Trump said.

He, however, excluded Fox News, his favourite news channel.

In November, he tweeted about a competition among news networks for the “Fake News Trophy”, excluding Fox News.

“We should have a contest as to which of the Networks, plus CNN and not including Fox, is the most dishonest, corrupt and/or distorted in its political coverage of your favourite President (me). They are all bad. Winner to receive the FAKE NEWS TROPHY!” Trump had tweeted on November 27.

Late in the evening, Fox News listed out some news stories of other networks that later proved to be inaccurate.

In an email to his supporters on December 28, the Trump campaign sought nomination for the “King of Fake News” trophy.

“At President Trump’s request, we are holding a contest to name the 2017 KING of Fake News. And we want to hear from you,” the email said.

“The FAKE NEWS has utterly abandoned their duty to fairly report the news to the American people. Some journalists and liberal pundits think that Americans are too stupid to see through their amateur efforts to manipulate public opinion, but THEY’RE WRONG,” the email wrote.

Noting that Americans are sick and tired of being lied to, insulted and treated with outright condescension, the Trump Campaign said “That’s why President Trump is crowning the 2017 KING OF FAKE NEWS before the end of the year”.

“There’s no point in pretending that some journalists are anything more than peddlers of falsehoods and liberal propaganda,” it said.

As per the Trump Campaign list, the competition for “King of Fame news” is between three news outlets.

“ABC News ‘MISTAKENLY’ reported that candidate Trump directed Michael Flynn to make contact with Russian officials before the election,” it said.

“CNN ‘MISTAKENLY’ reported that candidate Donald Trump and his son Donald J Trump Jr had access to hacked documents from WikiLeaks,” is the second story on the list.

“TIME ‘MISTAKENLY’ reported that President Trump removed a bust of Martin Luther King, Jr from the Oval Office,” the email said as it asked the participants to “let the President know if there is another story you think should be crowned as the 2017 KING of Fake News”.

Apple acquires Buddybuild app development startup, will drop Android support

IANS |

Apple has acquired Canadian start-up buddybuild, a mobile iteration platform focused on building integration and debugging tools for iOS developers, for an undisclosed sum.

“We’re excited to share that the buddybuild team has joined the Xcode engineering group at Apple to build amazing developer tools for the entire iOS community,” buddybuild said in a statement on Wednesday.

The company said that it would stay in Vancouver – a hotbed of developer and engineering talent.

“The buddybuild service will remain available to existing customers to build, test and ship iOS apps to testers through buddybuild.com,” it added.

The startup is no longer accepting new customers.

“Existing ‘Free Starter’ plans and Android app development will be discontinued on March 1, 2018,” the company said.

According to TechCrunch, buddybuild would be rolled into Xcode, Apple’s suite of development tools for iOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS. Apple still generates significant revenue from apps.

“Of the $17 billion generated in Q3 from apps globally (excluding China), Apple accounted for around $11 billion of it, according to App Annie,” the report added.

Buddybuild was founded in 2015 by former Amazon employees Dennis Pilarinos and Christopher Stott. In 2014, Apple acquired TestFlight which began to require users to employ Xcode to utilise the service.

Politician Rajinikanth to meet DMK patriarch Karunanidhi

SNS | New Delhi |

Actor turned politician Rajinikanth will on Wednesday meet ailing DMK chief M Karunanidhi at his residence even as those close to the leaders ruled out any political overtones.

The Tamil movie superstar will meet the former Tamil Nadu chief minister at his Gopalapuram residence and it will be Rajinikanth’s first political meet after he announced his entry into politics on December 31.

The DMK leaders indicated that not much should be read out of the scheduled meeting and that it will be a courtesy call.

Karunanidhi, who was taken ill in October 2016 due to a drug-induced allergy, was twice admitted to a private hospital in December last.

He has been since confined to his house, but made one rare appearance on October 19 this year when he visited an exhibition here held to showcase the 75-year journey of DMK’s mouthpiece, ‘Murasoli.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had in November met the ailing DMK patriarch while Congress President Rahul Gandhi had called on the nonagenarian in December, 2016.

Gillian Anderson is quitting ‘The X-Files’

PTI | London |

Actor Gillian Anderson has confirmed that she would exit The X-Files after season 11.

The actor, who plays agent Dana Scully in the show, made the announcement in an interview with TV Insider.

“I’ve said from the beginning this is it for me. I was a bit surprised by people’s (shocked) reaction to my announcement… because my understanding was that this was a single season,” Anderson said.

Back in October, the 49-year-old actor suggested that the season would be her last, though a statement from FOX at the time seemed to shoot down any official departure, stating Anderson “has not commented on returning as it’s premature in that she is currently filming the new event series.”

Debuting in 1993 on FOX, the long-running sci-fi series is set to return for season 11 on tomorrow on FOX.

Maha bandh in Maharashtra; state on edge after violence, protests

PTI | Mumbai |

Maharashtra remained on edge after the anniversary of a battle fought 200 years ago brought to fore simmering caste tensions even as a statewide bandh called on Wednesday to protest the state government’s alleged failure to stop violence witnessed stray protest by Dalits.

Dalit protesters tried to block tracks at the Thane railway station on Wednesday morning, but they were chased away soon and the traffic on the Central Railway line remained uninterrupted, said a railway official.

Protesters also tried to block rail traffic on the Western line in suburban Goregaon, said a police official.

Today’s Class 11 exams at St Xavier’s College in South Mumbai have been cancelled, college authorities said.

Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh (BBM) leader and Dr B R Ambedkar’s grandson Prakash Ambedkar have called for Maharashtra bandh on Wednesday to protest the state government’s “failure” to stop the violence at Bhima Koregaon village in Pune district two days ago.

Ambedkar alleged that Hindu Ekta Aghadi was responsible for the violence.

He said Maharashtra Democratic Front, Maharashtra Left Front and some 250 other organisations have supported the call for shutdown.

While the state government clarified that it hasn’t declared a school holiday, bus operators said they won’t run school buses in Mumbai on Wednesday.

“We can’t risk students’ safety and security. Will take a second decision at 11 am if we can run them in the second half, depending on the situation,” a School Bus Owners’ Association spokesperson said.

Gujarat MLA and Dalit leader Jignesh Meavani, who was in Mumbai on Tuesday, alleged the attacks on Dalits in Pune district two days ago were carried out by supporters of the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

“These organisations are modern-day Peshwas, representing Brahminism in its worst form. Two hundred years ago, our forefathers fought against the Peshwas. On Wednesday, Dalits of my generation are fighting against the new Peshwas,” he said.

“Why can’t Dalits peacefully commemorate the anniversary of the Bhima Koregaon battle? The attackers have resorted to such methods because they are scared of Dalit assertion,” he said.

Pune police last night said they had received a complaint against Mevani and Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University’s (JNU) student leader Umar Khalid for their “provocative” speeches at an event in Pune on December 31.

Mevani and Khalid had attended the “Elgar Parishad”, an event organised to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the battle of Bhima-Koregaon, at Shaniwar Wada in Pune.

Violence erupted in Pune district when Dalit groups were celebrating the bicentenary of the Bhima-Koregaon battle in which the forces of the British East India Company defeated the Peshwa’s army.

Dalit leaders commemorate the British victory, as it is believed that soldiers from the Mahar community – then considered untouchable – were part of the East India Company’s forces. The Peshwas were Brahmins, and the victory is seen as a symbol of assertiveness by Dalits.
