At least 12 Indian nationals were killed in an exploision at a gas facility in Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, the Indian Embassy in Doha confirmed on Monday.

“Qatari authorities have confirmed that 12 Indian nationals have unfortunately passed away in the Ras Laffan incident yesterday night. We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the departed souls,” the Embassy said in a post on X.

According to the Embassy, Qatari authorities have confirmed that all the injured are in stable condition and receiving appropriate medical treatment.

The Indian Embassy said that it is working closely with Qatari authorities to esnure the mortal remains of the deceased are sent to India at the earliest.

“Our Embassy is working in close contact with the Qatari authorities to extend all possible help to the Indian nationals and their families affected by this incident, including ensuring that mortal remains of the deceased are sent to India at the earliest,” the Embassy added.

According to Qatar’s Energy Minister, Saad bin Shreida Al-Kaabi, who is also the CEO of QatarEnergy, the explosion occured on Sunday evening at the Barzan local gas supply facility and triggered a fire.

One Pakistani national is also among the 13 killed in the incident.

Prior to this, the embassy had expressed “deep concern at the unfortunate incident”, reporting that several individuals had sustained injuries and others were unaccounted for.

“At this challenging and difficult time, the Embassy of India and the entire Indian community in Qatar stands in solidarity with the Government and people of Qatar. We wish for the speedy recovery of those injured and hope and pray for the safety of those missing,” it said.

QatarEnergy previously indicated that the blast and fire ignited during the start-up of operations at the Barzan local gas supply facility on Sunday evening.

The company confirmed that emergency response teams were deployed immediately to contain the fire, which is now under control.
