England lurching to defeat after Marsh brothers’ tons

Australians amassed 303-run innings lead and then reduced the battle-weary tourists to 93 for four at the close with a day to play.

AFP | Sydney |

Nathan Lyon was hailed as Australia’s “key” bowler as the team closes in on an emphatic victory in the final Ashes Test after beleaguered England unravelled on a torrid day in Sydney on Sunday.

The Australians amassed a massive 303-run innings lead in blistering heat and then reduced the battle-weary tourists to 93 for four at the close with a day to play.

Compounding England’s woes was a finger injury for skipper Joe Root, his team’s last major hope of staving off a 4-0 series rout on Monday’s final day of the Test.

Root was unbeaten on 42 at the close with Jonny Bairstow not out 17.

Lyon captured the important wickets of Alastair Cook and Dawid Malan to have two for 31 off 19 overs at stumps.

“I think Gaz (Lyon) is the key tomorrow. The wicket is definitely suiting his conditions, especially with the left handers, he’ll come into play,” Australian centurion Shaun Marsh said.

“I thought he bowled really well today and showed his class and hopefully he can come out tomorrow and get a few early breakthroughs for us.”

Australia called a halt to their epic first innings at 649 for seven, and soon had England in trouble after the tourists had been cooked in the field for more than two draining days.

Mark Stoneman was leg before wicket to Mitchell Starc for a duck and lost a review in the process, and next ball Cook was put down at first slip by Marsh off Josh Hazlewood for five.

But Cook’s reprieve did not last long and he was bowled for 10 when a sharp Lyon turner hit the top of off-stump in the off-spinner’s first over.

Cook, who became during his innings only the sixth batsman to score 12,000 Test runs, finished the series with 376 runs at 47.

James Vince survived a caught behind off Lyon on review on 15, but three runs later edged Pat Cummins to Steve Smith at slip.

Dawid Malan followed when Lyon trapped him leg before wicket for five.

Ton-up brothers

“In many ways the last few days have summed up our trip,” said England assistant coach Paul Farbrace.

“It’s been exceptionally tough, we’ve come up against a team that’s playing very good cricket but the one thing that we’ve been talking about is making sure we keep on fighting and battling.”

Shaun and Mitchell Marsh earlier became the third set of brothers to score centuries in the same innings for Australia.

The Marsh boys joined Greg and Ian Chappell and Steve and Mark Waugh to score brotherly centuries for Australia, while it was the eighth time overall it had happened in Test cricket.

The Chappells were the first Australian brothers to notch centuries in the same innings at The Oval in 1972 with the Waughs the last to do it against England, also at The Oval, in 2001.

Mitchell Marsh almost spoiled his century in all the excitement as he embraced his brother mid-pitch before he had completed the second run scrambling back to his crease to avoid being run out.

Mitchell Marsh was bowled next ball by Tom Curran for 101 off 141 balls with 15 fours and two sixes. The century came after his 181 in the third Test in Perth.

He was the third centurion of the massive Australian first innings total, following Usman Khawaja’s 171 on Saturday.

Shaun Marsh was eventually dismissed after lunch, run out for 156 by Stoneman’s direct throw from the covers.

He batted for 403 minutes and faced 291 balls for his second century of the series and his sixth in 28 Tests.

Starc slogged Moeen Ali for six and was out the next ball finding Vince at long on for 11.

Tim Paine (38) and Pat Cummins (24) were at the crease when Steve Smith called them in about an hour before tea.

Big-hearted paceman James Anderson bowled with great economy in the stifling conditions as temperatures hit 42 Celsius (108 Farenheit), taking one for 56 off 34 overs.

Spinners Ali and debutant Mason Crane conceded a combined 363 runs in taking three wickets between them.

Strategy was always a strong part of my game: Gilles Simon

PTI | Pune |

He does not have either a powerful serve or flashy ground strokes to intimidate his rivals, yet Gilles Simon scripted the fall of big guys on the Tour Marin Cilic and Kevin Anderson to lift his first title in almost three years.

Ranked a humble 89, Simon landed on his visit to India without his coach and other support staff but was ready for the grind and scalped the two Grand Slam finalists in 2017 at the Tata Open Maharashtra.

The 33-year-old parted ways with his coach Jan de Witt mental coach Ronax Lafaix and physical trainer Milos Jelisavic.

His rivals admitted that Simon played smart and the affable French man, who became a crowd favourite, too endorsed their view.

“This is something I always did. I never hired a coach to help me with strategy. The previous coach I had was a massive mind in the game and knows a lot about the tactics. The strategy was always a strong part for me,” said Simon after winning his 13th ATP singles title.

“To understand what is happening on the court is always my strength. As long as I stay calm and cool and which I did all the week and that s why I could perform on that level.”

Someone who has beaten greats of the game, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, Simon controlled the match with his incredible retrieving skills and mixed up the pace in serve to surprise his rival.

A point noted by Anderson, to whom he had lost in all three previous contests.

Asked if he changed anything in his game to get the better of the tall South African, Simon nodded but did not elaborate.

“Yes, I changed a few things but I won t tell you because he does not have to know. I made small adjustments. His serve is like his that I have to find a magic trick to return every time, so you just try to jump on the board and try.

“My serve was great. Yes, I was changing and mixing the pace on my serve and it was pretty effective. I wish I could serve like him and hit it every corner but that s what I can t do, so I try find a way to start the point well in a different way, he said.

Simon agreed when asked if playing against another big- serving player in Marin Cilic, prepared him well for the final.

“Yes I must say. It was helping a lot because they have some similarities to their game. Kevin is even serving better than Marin. It s terrible to return but it was more so about the rallies from the baseline, they like to hit a lot, they play at a high pace, so yes playing Marin before Kevin was helping a lot,” Simon said.

Simon said he did not expect to reach both the singles and doubles final in the first tournament of the season.

“I was really surprised and it feels good. And I played good. I played a good match against Roberto, the defending champion. I played a few good shots during the match.

“So something happened during the week. I felt like home.

“I was hoping to play one in final, in singles. I have never won two doubles matches in a row, it never happened. So it was a great surprise.”

Talking a about the 39-shot rally on the set point in the tie-break, Simon said, “My heart rate was like 260. I was happy he could not move on the last forehand. It was very important. It was a point when there was lot of pressure,” he added.

Germany’s Merkel embarks on new talks to form government

AP | Berlin |

German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives and the centre-left Social Democrats are starting talks on forming a new government, attempting to break an impasse more than three months after the country’s election.

Merkel’s conservative Union bloc and the Social Democrats have run Germany together for the past four years. But the Social Democrats vowed to go into opposition after a disastrous election result September 24, and only reluctantly reconsidered after Merkel’s attempt to build a coalition with two smaller parties collapsed in November.

The effort to form a government has already become post- World War II Germany’s longest. Leaders aim to decide by Friday whether there’s enough common ground to move on to formal coalition negotiations, which would require approval by a Social Democrat congress. (AP)

Mohan Bhagwat to hoist national flag in Kerala on Jan 26

PTI | New Delhi |

Undeterred by an ugly spat over the unfurling of the national flag in Kerala on August 15, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat is all set to hoist the tricolour again in the Left-ruled state on Republic Day.

The flag will be hoisted on January 26 in a school on the outskirts of Palakkad in Kerala, RSS members said.

Bhagwat will be in Kerala to attend a three-day camp of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), starting January 26, to be held in a school near Palakkad town.

“The sarsanghchalakji (RSS chief) always hoists the national flag on Independence Day and Republic Day wherever he is on these days. Since on January 26 he will be in Kerala, he will hoist the flag there. It should only be seen in this light,” a senior Sangh functionary said.

Sangh members added that the school where the RSS event is being organised is under the administration of the RSS’s Bharatheeya Vidya Nikethan.

A functionary said the RSS was a nationalist organisation and celebrating these national days was a part of its culture.

On August 15 last year, Bhagwat had unfurled the tricolour at a school in Palakkad district, flouting an order of the district administration.

“It was very unfortunate that last year the state government ordered the school not to allow him to hoist the flag,” the functionary said.

The RSS has a considerable presence in Kerala, where the BJP is seeking to make inroads.

The state has been witnessing incidents of political violence involving cadres of the ruling Communist Party of India – Marxist (CPI-M) and the RSS.

Sebi bans Active Rural Development, Four directors for 4 year

PTI | Hyderabad |

Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) will be investing about Rs 10,000 crore during the next five years on expansion programmes with a target to achieve Rs 34,000-crore revenues by then, said a top official.

N Sridhar, Chairman and Managing Director of SCCL, said the investment involves expansion of new mines, adding 800 mw to the existing 1,200 mw power plant and setting up 500 mw solar power project.

The government-owned coal mining company is poised to clock Rs 24,000-crore income this year from both selling coal and power and aims to take this figure to Rs 34,000 crore in five years.

“We are expanding the existing power plant (of 1,200 mw) by adding 800 mw. We expect the work to start next year.

We are also in the process of setting up a 500 mw solar power project.

“We are opening 12 new mines (six underground and as many opencast) which will have capacity of 21 million tonnes per annum. The total investment for all the programmes would be Rs 10,000 crore in the next five years,” Sridhar told PTI in an exclusive interview.

“Broadly, we see capex of Rs 2,000 core per annum from the next year for five years,” he added.

Currently, the miner has 47 coal mines spread across the northern part of Telangana with about 10 billion tonne reserves. Under Sridhar, who took charge three years ago, SCCL has been showing growth in both production and dispatches.

“This year we expect 62.5 MT production by the end of the current (fiscal) year. We added about 10 MT growth during the past three years. Similarly, we may touch 65 MT this year against 52 MT three years ago,” he said.

According to him, revenues may touch nearly Rs 24,000 crore, which includes income from power, in FY18 from Rs 19,274 crore in FY17, up over 23 per cent.

“We are expecting Rs 1,100 crore profit this year (FY18) as against Rs 400 crore last year. On the back of new mines, SCCL aims to take the production to 85 MT in the next five years.

“So we expect Rs 34,000-crore turnover, which will include income from both coal and power, in five years,” he said.

The average price of coal the SCCL sells currently is about Rs 2,500 per tonne with different rate structure for power producers and others.

“To encourage clean energy, we are going to set up solar power projects with combined capacity of 500 mw. We have identified lands also for setting up the solar projects. The total power production capacity would be 2,500 mw (both solar and thermal) by 2022,” Sridhar explained.

SCCL is a debt-free company with about Rs 6000 crore cash reserves. However, it planned to raise sole debt for the proposed 800 mw thermal power project.

Replying to a query, he said the company has sought allocation of some more coal mines for extraction from the Centre and is awaiting a reply in this regard.

The PSU earlier had called for Expressions of Interest (EOIs) from global players for acquiring mines abroad.

However, slackening coal prices dampened the company’s interest to acquire overseas assets.

Body of man recovered from fire-hit film studio in Mumbai

PTI | Mumbai |

The body of a 20-year-old man was recovered on Sunday from the rubble at the Cine Vista film studio, where a fire broke out last evening, the police said.

The fire at the studio in suburban Kanjurmarg broke out around 8 pm yesterday. By 10 pm, it was brought under control.

The deceased, identified as Gopi Verma, used to work for a television serial production unit, senior inspector, Park Site police station, Vilas Jadhav, said.

Verma was reported to be missing by his family members after the fire broke out at the studio, where the shooting for two TV serials was on at the time of the incident.

His body was found in the rubble this morning, Jadhav said, adding that it was sent for a post-mortem.

Over 100 TV crew members were evacuated from the studio after the blaze.

The blaze had started from the electric wires in the studio and spread to the other areas, fire brigade officials said.

This was the third major fire incident in the city in the last 10 days.

Fourteen persons were killed in a fire at an upscale pub in the Kamala Mills compound on December 29. Besides, four persons, including two children, had died and five were seriously injured after an upper floor of a residential building in suburban Marol caught fire on January 4.

One killed, thousands displaced after Madagascar cyclone

AFP | Antananarivo |

One person was killed, three are missing and thousands have been displaced after tropical cyclone Ava tore through Madagascar, authorities have said.

The cyclone, which made landfall on Friday morning, lashed the eastern part of the African island off Mozambique with violent winds and heavy rains before moving off the territory last night.

“Based on the provisional toll, one person has died, three people have been reported missing, 10,465 people have been displaced and more than 12,000 affected by the storm,” the National Bureau for Risk and Catastrophe Management said in a statement.

The cyclone caused flash flooding in the capital Antananarivo and the port city of Toamasina.

Madagascar, one of the world’s poorest countries, is regularly hit by cyclones.

In March last year, cyclone Enawo killed at least 78 people.

Krishnaveni and her elder sister Ranganayaki (80) were found murdered with their throats slit, police said.

On receipt of information, police reached the spot and conducted a preliminary enquiry.

Hindu refugees eagerly await return to Myanmar

AFP | Cox's Bazar |

Hindu farmer Surodhon Pal has packed his bags, eager to return to Myanmar after fleeing for Bangladesh during a wave of violence last year, but he is in a tiny minority — most of the refugees are terrified of going home.
Bangladesh wants the more than 655,000 refugees who have flooded into the country since late August to start returning to Myanmar by the end of this month under a controversial agreement between the two nations. The vast majority are Rohingya Muslims who have faced decades of persecution in Myanmar, which sees them as illegal immigrants, even though many have lived there for generations.

They say they would rather stay in the squalid camps in Bangladesh than return to the scene of violence the US and the United Nations have said amounts to ethnic cleansing.

But a small community of Hindus who lived alongside the Rohingya in Myanmar’s Rakhine state and were caught up in the turmoil say they do want to return.

“We want security and we want food. If the authorities can give us those assurances we’ll happily go back,” Pal, 55, told AFP.

“The Bangladeshi government and the UN looked after us well, but now we have prepared our bags and are ready to return to our country.”

Last month Dhaka sent a list of 100,000 refugees to Myanmar authorities for repatriation after the two governments signed an agreement in November for the process to begin on January 23.

But rights groups and the United Nations say no one should be repatriated against their will and so far only around 500 Hindu refugees have expressed willingness to go.

Modhuram Pal, a 35-year-old community leader, said some 50 Hindus had already returned to Rakhine where they were welcomed by Myanmar security forces.

Hindus who fled the area have told AFP that masked men stormed into their community and hacked victims to death with machetes before dumping them into freshly-dug pits.

Myanmar’s military alleges the Arakan Rohingya Solidarity Army (ARSA) carried out the massacre on August 25, the same day the rebel group staged deadly raids on police posts that sparked a military backlash. At least 45 bodies have been found in mass graves.

The ARSA has denied the allegations, saying it does not target civilians.

But Pal and his fellow Hindu refugees say they will only go back if they are rehoused away from their former villages in Rakhine.

Monubala, a Hindu woman who like many of the refugees goes by one name, told AFP masked men dressed in black had attacked her village near Kha Maung Seik, where the massacre occurred.

“I left my home, including my chickens, ducks, goats and all property, and came to Bangladesh to save my life,” she said.

Doctors without Borders estimates that thousands were killed in the violence that hit Rakhine in late August.

Govt open to proposals to further cleanse pol funding: Jaitley

PTI | New Delhi |

The electoral bonds mechanism is a substantial improvement in transparency over the present system and the government is open to suggestions to further cleanse political funding, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said today.

In a Facebook post, Jaitley said the conventional practice of funding the political system was to take donations as well as undertake expenditures in cash.

The sources are anonymous or pseudonymous. The quantum of money was never disclosed and the system ensures unclean money coming from unidentifiable sources.

“It is a wholly non-transparent system. Most political groups seem fairly satisfied with the present arrangement and would not mind this status-quo to continue.

“The effort, therefore, is to run down any alternative system which is devised to cleanse up the political funding mechanism,” Jaitley said.

The finance minister had last week announced the contours of the electoral bonds, which will be sold by country’s latest lender SBI and will have a tenure of just 15 days.

The bonds are being pitched as an alternative to cash donations made to political parties.

Jaitley said the choice has now to be “consciously” made between the existing system of substantial cash donations involving unclean money and other transparent options like cheque, online transactions or electoral bonds.

“While all three methods involve clean money, the first two are totally transparent and the electoral bonds scheme is a substantial improvement in transparency over the present system of no-transparency,” he said.

“The government is willing to consider all suggestions to further strengthen the cleansing of political funding in India. It has to be borne in mind that impractical suggestions will not improve the cash denominated system. They would only consolidate it,” Jaitley wrote.

He said India, despite being the largest democracy in the world, has not been able to evolve a transparent political funding system in the last seven decades.

“The round the year functioning of the political parties involves a large expenditure… These expenditures run into hundreds of crores. Yet there has not been a transparent funding mechanism of the political system,” he said.

Fodder scam: Akhilesh Yadav expresses solidarity with jailed Lalu

PTI | Lucknow |

Expressing solidarity with jailed RJD chief Lalu Prasad, Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav said on Sunday that the “BJP did injustice” to him.

“The BJP did injustice to him,” he said when reporters asked him about Prasad’s sentence in the fodder scam.

SP national general-secretary Ramashankar Vidyarthi said in Ballia that Prasad was facing consequences for not joining the BJP bandwagon.

“He is being trapped in a conspiracy by the BJP. Had he joined the BJP, he would not have to suffer jail sentence,” he said, adding, “I am sure he will get justice from High Court”.

He said it was the need of the hour that all opposition parties unite to defeat the BJP.

Prasad was yesterday sentenced to three-and-a-half years in jail and fined Rs 10 lakh by a special CBI court in Ranchi in a fodder scam case relating to fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 89.27 lakh from the Deoghar treasury 21 years ago.

The punishment was handed down to Prasad, 69, by CBI court judge Shiv Pal Singh through video conferencing, since the RJD leader was lodged in Birsa Munda Central Jail after being convicted in the case on December 23, CBI counsel Rakesh Prasad said.

Drunken driving in Hyderabad kills woman

IANS | Hyderabad        |

A woman was killed and two others were critically injured when a car being driven by a youth under the influence of alcohol hit their scooty here on early Sunday, police said.

The accident occurred on Road Number 10 in the posh Banjara Hills area. The youth lost control of the speeding car which hit the scooty, police said.

A woman, identified as Mastani and who was riding the scooty, died on the spot. Two other women, Anusha and Priya, who were riding pillion, were critically injured. They were admitted to a hospital.

After hitting the two-wheeler, the car sped away. However, after covering some distance, the driver again lost control and hit the road divider.

Police arrested Vishnu Vardhan, who was driving the car in an inebriated condition.

This the latest in a series of accidents in the city involving drunk drivers. The accidents are being reported even as police continued its drive against drunken driving.

During the checks conducted at upmarket Jubilee Hills late Saturday night, police booked over a dozen people including four women.

Police had booked as many as 2,500 people for drunken driving during New Year celebrations in the city.

Last year, 7,500 people were sent to jail on charges of driving vehicles under influence of alcohol.

In 2016, a 10-year-old girl and two of her family members were killed when a car in which they were travelling was hit by another car being driven by a youth under the influence of alcohol.

The youth was accompanied by three of his college friends and they were all returning from a bar.

China’s Arunachal transgression not planned

IANS | New Delhi |

The recent Chinese intrusion into Arunachal Pradesh was an “inadvertent border crosswalk” by some labourers and did not involve Chinese troops, according to a report by the National Security Council, an apex body that advises the Prime Minister on security-related issues.

According to highly placed sources, the report said the group was tasked with construction work and was unaware they were on Indian territory before they were confronted by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). It added the group had no involvement with the Chinese People’s Liberation Army.

The area where the intrusion occurred is in Bishing of Upper Siang district, along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and the two countries do not have a agreed border in this area. Given the mountain terrain and winding topography, the road construction group entered the Indian side where they built a track more than 600 meters long.

The report that analysed the incident that took place around December 26 said the intrusion was not planned. When the road building party was confronted by the ITBP, they left the equipment and ran away.

China has approached the Indian side and requested that the equipment be returned, which includes a JCB and a water tanker.

Sources said the Indian side was likely to return the equipment whenever the next meeting at the border was held.

India and China share a 4,000-km boundary and except for a small portion of boundary in the middle, the borders have not been settled.

In the east, China claims India’s Arunachal Pradesh as its own while New Delhi lays claims to Aksai Chin in the west now with Beijing.

Both Defence and Home ministries have on several occasions called the lack of a fixed boundary the reason behind incidents of transgression by Chinese troops.

The incident had raised concerns similar to what happened along the India-China-Bhutan tri-junction in Doklam where China tried to build a road in territory claimed by Bhutan, and was stopped by India, resulting in a 73-day stand-off.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi admitted the stand-off put a “severe” strain on bilateral ties.

In December, Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese State Councillor and Communist Party of China leader Yang Jiechi held the 20th Meeting of Special Representatives of India and China on border issues.

The two sides called the talks “positive and focused” and agreed to seek “mutually acceptable resolutions of their differences.
