Anubhav Sinha admits ‘Assi’ missed theatre expectations despite praise: ‘Disturbing’ reviews scared audiences away

Despite glowing praise, Anubhav Sinha admits Assi struggled to pull larger crowds to theatres. He says words like “disturbing” and audience warnings made some viewers hesitate, even as conversations around the film grew louder.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha is smiling, but also thinking hard. His latest film ‘Assi’ has landed on ZEE5, and the reactions have been loud, emotional, and sometimes even confusing. Messages, DMs, reels, and reviews, everything is pouring in. And somewhere between applause and hesitation, Sinha is trying to decode what really happened.

The filmmaker in a recent India Today interview opened up about love, the mixed theatre turnout, the impact of reviews, and why he still wants to keep making such films, even when the road is tough.

A flood of love… and unexpected intensity

Sinha revealed that he has been overwhelmed by the response since the film premiered on April 17. But the way people express appreciation has changed. Instead of letters or phone calls, he is now receiving Instagram reels, direct messages, and social media reactions. He joked that “the mode of message transport has changed,” but said the medium does not matter as long as the sentiment is positive.

He admitted that he expected the film to spark conversations, much like his earlier film ‘Thappad’. According to him, the purpose of making such films is not to give answers but to raise questions.

He believes society often understands issues better than filmmakers, and when people talk about them, they eventually discover both questions and solutions.

Still, the intensity of reactions surprised him. Sinha said he wanted the film to affect viewers, but the emotional impact went far beyond his expectations. The discussions became deeper, more personal, and more widespread than he had imagined.

He also addressed the idea that audiences may not be ready for layered storytelling. Sinha strongly disagreed, saying viewers are often underestimated. He pointed out that Indian cinema has always supported diverse storytelling. He cited filmmakers like Prakash Mehra, Manmohan Desai, Govind Nihalani, Shyam Benegal, and Basu Chatterjee, all of whom thrived at the same time despite making very different kinds of cinema.

Theatre footfalls: hope, reality, and a little disappointment

While the appreciation was strong, Sinha admitted that he had hoped for better turnout in theatres. He described commercial success as very important, especially for films like this that are difficult to make and consume. Such films, he said, are harder to execute financially, but that is a choice he willingly makes.

He used a poetic analogy to explain his expectations. You aim for the moon, he said, even while knowing you might not reach it. But in this case, the film did not even achieve what he considered “adequate” footfalls. It did not become luxurious in terms of audience numbers, and it also fell short of what he thought was sufficient.

However, he did highlight a positive figure. More than 1.2 million people watched the film in theatres. He called that encouraging, even if it did not match his initial hopes.

Sinha also reflected on changing habits. According to him, theatre-going itself has reduced because it has become less convenient. He compared it to changing retail patterns, noting that people now have easier options at home. Streaming, comfort, and convenience are all influencing how audiences choose what to watch and where.

Reviews: praise that helped… and words that scared viewers

One of the most interesting points Sinha made was about reviews. He believes they played a big role in shaping the film’s theatrical performance. Many critics praised the film but used words like “disturbing” or “a punch in the gut.” While these were meant as compliments, Sinha feels they may have discouraged some viewers.

He also noted that audience reactions had a similar effect. People came out of theatres saying things like “it’s not for everyone” or advising sensitive viewers to avoid it. These comments, he said, unintentionally worked against the film by making it seem intimidating.

At the same time, not all buzz was negative. Positive phrases like “important watch,” “important story,” and strong praise for performances did attract viewers. So the film experienced a push-and-pull effect. Appreciation drew people in, while warnings made others stay away.

Sinha explained that reviews matter more for films like this than for mainstream entertainers. Big commercial films often survive mixed reviews, but for content-driven cinema, audiences rely heavily on critics and early reactions before deciding to buy a ticket.

IRGC seizes two cargo vessels crossing Hormuz Strait without ‘necessary permits’; one was headed to Gujarat

EPAMINONDES, one of the two vessels seized by IRGC, is a Liberia flagged ship that was reportedly headed to Gujarat from Jebel Ali in Dubai.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy on Wednesday claimed to have seized two cargo vessels, the MSC Francesca and Epaminondas, for attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz “without the necessary permits.”

In a statement shared by semi-official Tasnim News, the IRGC Navy alleged that the ships were tampering with maritime navigation systems when intercepted, adding that they were directed towards the Iranian coast.

“Two vessels violating regulations — MSC FRANCESCA (linked to the Zionist regime) and EPAMINONDAS — which endangered maritime security by operating without authorization and tampering with maritime navigation systems, were intercepted by the IRGC Navy and directed toward the Iranian coast,” the Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy said in the statement.

The IRGC Naval Command further added: “Disrupting the order and security of the Strait of Hormuz is our red line.”

According to reports, EPAMINONDES is a Liberia flagged ship that was headed to Gujarat from Jebel Ali in Dubai.

This follows earlier reports about two container ships being attacked in the Strait of Hormuz. The ships were targeted as part of an enforcement operation by Iranian authorities, according to Tasnim News.

The development comes amid the growing uncertainty over the second round of peace talks between the US and Iran.

Despite the extension of the ceasefire, Iran has been firm on its stand, saying talks with the US will be held only when rational conditions exist.

Amid US President Donald Trump’s threats that he will order the bombing of Iran if the deal is not signed, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei today said that Tehran stands ready to defend itself militarily.

He, however, added that the Islamic Republic was open to the prospect of further talks provided rational conditions exist.

According to the official IRNA news agency, Baghaei said that Iran will negotiate “whenever we conclude that the necessary and rational conditions exist to use this tool to achieve national interests.”

Ceasefire extended

Earlier on Wednesday, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that Trump has agreed to extend the ceasefire, which was about to expire today.

“On my personal behalf and on behalf of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, I sincerely thank President Trump for graciously accepting our request to extend the ceasefire to allow ongoing diplomatic efforts to take their course,” Sharif said on X.

He further added, “With the trust and confidence reposed in us, Pakistan shall continue its earnest efforts for a negotiated settlement of the conflict. I sincerely hope that both sides will continue to observe the ceasefire and be able to conclude a comprehensive ‘Peace Deal’ during the second round of talks scheduled in Islamabad for a permanent end to the conflict.”

A new research by Patanjali Research Foundation has highlighted the potential benefits of yoga, naturopathy, and Ayurveda in improving glycemic control and overall well-being among patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM).

The study, titled “Impact of Integrative Therapies on Glycemic Control in Type 1 Diabetes: A Systematic Review and Global Research Landscape”, has been published in the journal Frontiers in Clinical Diabetes and Healthcare.

The research was led by Acharya Balkrishna along with researchers from the Patanjali Herbal Research Division and the University of Patanjali in Haridwar, Uttarakhand.

During the study, yoga demonstrated its advantages in enhancing nerve conductionand cognitive functions in diabetic patients, thereby aiding in theeffective management of diabetic complications.

“Yoga has been observed to enhance insulin sensitivity in target tissues, therebyreducing insulin resistance and boosting the peripheral utilization ofglucose. Additionally, it can rejuvenate or regenerate pancreatic b-cellsand heighten the sensitivity of these cells to glucose signals,” the study claimed.

The researchers analysed 612 scientific records from data bases including PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar. “Out of these, 12 studies met the inclusion criteria for detailed qualitative and quantitative analysis.”

Some Ayurvedic herbs and supplements that have been studied for potential benefits in managing blood sugar levels include cinnamon, fenugreek, Aloe vera and bittermelon. They were found to be beneficial in managing the Tyoe 1 diabetes.

The study concluded that Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is a complex, multifaceted disease and traditional insulin therapy is essential for managing blood glucose levels and preventing complications.

However, it added, integrating complementary therapies including dietary modifications, exercise, and mind-body practices like yoga and meditation has shown promise in supporting traditional treatments and enhancing quality of life for individuals with T1DM.

“Emerging research suggests that these holistic approaches may improve glycemic control, reducestress, and enhance overall well-being, offering potential benefitsthat go beyond conventional treatment alone. As the evidence for integrated therapies grows, healthcare providers have the opportunity to empower patients with more comprehensive, personalized management strategies that align with individual lifestyles and preferences.”

“This integrated approach not only aims to optimize clinical outcomes but also fosters patient engagement and resilience, paving the way for a more sustainable and effective management framework for T1DM in the future,” the study noted.

‘Used entire system to put democracy in jeopardy’: SC slams Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee over I-PAC ED raid

A bench of Justices PK Mishra and NV Anjaria said that a chief minister cannot storm the premises in the midst of an investigation.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday slammed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over her alleged obstruction during an Enforcement Directorate (ED) raid at Trinamool Congress political consultancy firm I-PAC founder Pratik Jain’s Kolkata residence in January this year.

The court held that a chief minister cannot storm the premises in the midst of an investigation and asserted that the Bengal CM’s actions put democracy in jeopardy.

“This is, per se, an action by an individual who happens to be the CM who has used the entire system to put democracy in jeopardy,” the top court told Banerjee.

Hearing the ED’s plea seeking registration of a CBI FIR against CM Banerjee and the State Police Officials for allegedly obstructing the agency’s raid, a bench of Justices PK Mishra and NV Anjaria said that when a CM walks into ED inquiry, it is not a Centre vs State matter.

“What right of the state does this involve? This is not a dispute between the state and the central government. You cannot walk in. Any Chief Minister of any state walks in the midst of an inquiry of an investigation and you say that it is a dispute essentially between the state and the central government?” the bench remarked.

The apex court also deprecated the alleged ‘gherao’ of judicial officers deputed in the state for the SIR exercise.

Terming the current socio-political realities in the poll-bound state an “extra-ordinary situation”, the bench told the counsels arguing on behalf of the West Bengal administration, which includes CM Mamata Banerjee and other senior officials, that they may argue on abstract legal principles but the Court cannot shut its eyes to the practical realities going on in the State.

“This is an extraordinary situation. Before the other Bench (referring to the gherao in the SIR case), we have seen that several judicial officers have been kept hostage. We cannot shut our eyes to realities. You may argue abstract legal principles, but we cannot lose sight of the practical situation occurring in the State”, the Court remarked.

The matter has been listed for further hearing on Thursday.

Air China restarts Delhi-Beijing direct flights amid warming India-China relations

The service will run three times a week on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Amid warming bilateral relations between India and China, Air China has resumed Beijing-Delhi flight services, giving a major boost to air connectivity between the two countries.

According to a news report by the Chinese English daily Global Times, the service will run three times a week on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

The economy class fares will start from approximately Rs 49,000 (3570 yuan), with the flight departing at 3:15 pm from Beijing and arriving in Delhi at 8:20 pm local time.

The bilateral ties between India and China have improved since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Tianjin last year.

Following the visit, both countries agreed to resume flight services and bilateral trade via Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand and Shipki La Pass in Himachal Pradesh after a six-year hiatus.

Last month, China Eastern Airlines resumed its direct flight between Kunming and Kolkata. The carrier had earlier resumed direct flights between New Delhi and Shanghai in November last year.

Similarly, Indian airlines have also undertaken similar measures, with IndiGo resuming daily direct flights between Kolkata and Shanghai from March 29.

Earlier, IndiGo resumed the Kolkata-Guangzhou route and launched the Delhi-Guangzhou route.

Border trade via Lipulekh Pass set to resume in June

India and China are also set to resume border trade through the Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand after a six-year hiatus.

The trade, which was halted in 2020 following border clashes between the armies of the two countries, will resume in June this year.

The development follows the August 2025 diplomatic agreement between India and China to reopen three designated Himalayan trade routes – Lipulekh, Shipki La, and Nathu La.

Delhi horror: Civil servant’s daughter found murdered at home; sexual assault suspected

A young UPSC aspirant was found dead in her Delhi residence, with investigators probing possible assault and focusing on a former domestic help as a key suspect.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

A 22-year-old woman, the daughter of a senior civil servant, was found dead at her home in a southeast Delhi colony on Wednesday morning, in a case that has sent shockwaves through the area.

The victim, an engineering graduate preparing for the UPSC examination, is suspected to have been sexually assaulted before being killed, according to preliminary findings. The case has raised serious concerns over safety within residential spaces, especially when occupants are alone.

Police sources said the woman was alone at the time of the incident as her parents had stepped out for the gym. Investigators suspect she was strangled using a mobile phone charging cable.

The crime came to light after police received information early in the morning. Teams rushed to the spot and began a detailed probe.

Former domestic help under suspicion

Police said suspicion has centred on a former domestic help who had been dismissed from service around one-and-a-half months ago. Efforts are currently underway to trace the suspect.

A case has been registered, and further investigation is in progress, police added.

‘Spiked drink, no Wi-Fi for 3 days’: US tourist alleges sexual assault at Coorg homestay; 2 arrested

A foreign tourist’s escape and complaint to embassy officials led to arrests in a Kodagu homestay case, now under scrutiny for alleged isolation tactics and regulatory violations.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

An American tourist was allegedly sexually assaulted at a private homestay in Karnataka’s Kodagu district. Police have arrested two men and launched a detailed probe into the incident.

The case has raised fresh questions over safety at homestays and the enforcement of regulations, with Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara indicating that there were attempts to suppress the matter before police stepped in.

What happened at the Kodagu homestay

Police said the woman had checked into a homestay in Kutta village in Coorg’s Virajpet Assembly constituency on April 19. The main accused, identified as Vrujesh Kumar, a native of Jharkhand, allegedly spiked her drink before sexually assaulting her.

Following her complaint, a case was registered at the Kutta Police Station, and the accused was arrested. The homestay owner, Vishal, has also been taken into custody.

Investigators suspect the owner attempted to prevent the victim from seeking help. “Prima facie evidence suggested that the owner attempted to cut off the victim’s connection to the outside world. His role is being investigated, and he has been arrested,” a police officer told local media.

Sources said the Wi-Fi at the property was deliberately switched off for three days, leaving the woman unable to contact anyone.

How the victim managed to escape

Police said the woman managed to leave the homestay after telling the owner she was heading to Mysuru. Once out, she contacted officials at the United States embassy and the Mysuru police via email.

Following this, local police, in coordination with embassy officials, formed a special team to investigate the case. Both the accused have been arrested and remanded to judicial custody until May 3.

Officials from the Ministry of External Affairs in Delhi and Chennai are also in touch with local authorities to review the situation and coordinate further action.

‘Attempts to cover it up were foiled’: Minister

Responding to the development, Home Minister G Parameshwara said, “As soon as the matter came to light, the police arrested the accused. Further action will be taken as per the law.”

He added, “It appears that after the incident, there were attempts to cover it up. But once the police received information, they acted promptly and gathered details.”

The minister also underlined the need for strict compliance with norms. “Action must be taken accordingly. Whoever is running such establishments as homestays must have proper licensing. We have already laid down SOPs on what needs to be followed to operate a homestay. If such incidents occur in violation of those norms, legal action must be taken,” he said.

“Such incidents do not send a good message about the state or society. Especially when outsiders or foreigners are involved, it reflects on our society and our country. That is why strict action is necessary, and we are taking it,” he added.

Past incident underscores safety concerns

The case has drawn comparisons with a 2023 incident in Karnataka’s Hampi region, where a group of tourists, including an Israeli woman, was attacked while stargazing near the Tungabhadra canal.

In that case, male tourists were assaulted and pushed into the canal, while two women were allegedly gang-raped. The accused were later arrested and charged under multiple IPC sections, including gang rape and attempt to murder. A court later awarded the death penalty to three convicts.

‘Time may come when India plays its role’: Rajnath Singh signals bigger diplomatic space on West Asia crisis

Rajnath Singh highlights India’s neutral global stance, strong Germany ties and growing economic partnership, while pointing to diplomatic engagement across major world conflicts.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday indicated that India could step into a more active role in resolving global conflicts, including the ongoing tensions in West Asia, even as he underlined New Delhi’s steady and balanced diplomatic approach under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The remarks came during an interaction with the Indian community at the Indian Embassy in Berlin, where Singh framed India’s foreign policy as one rooted in neutrality and engagement with all sides. He said India has already made efforts to push for peace but stressed that outcomes depend on the right timing and evolving global conditions.

India’s diplomatic stance and possible future role

“India has tried… But everything has its time. It is possible that tomorrow, the time may come when India plays its role in this and achieves success as well. We cannot rule out this possibility. The Prime Minister has appealed to both sides to end the war. Our Prime Minister has a very balanced approach to diplomatic matters,” Singh said.

He pointed out that the Prime Minister has personally reached out to leaders involved in key global conflicts to encourage dialogue and de-escalation.

“When he (PM Modi) met Russian President Putin and the Ukrainian President, he discussed this. Even when he met Trump, he also discussed and said that a solution should be found,” he added.

Strait of Hormuz passage highlights India’s positioning

Singh also cited India’s navigation through the sensitive Strait of Hormuz as an example of its diplomatic balance, noting that Indian vessels were able to pass through at a time when others struggled.

“The way India is moving, you must have seen that in the Strait of Hormuz, no ship from any country was able to pass through. If anyone managed to pass through their 7-8 ships, then it was India… It is not that the US considers India as its enemy, or Iran considers India as its enemy. No, this is a very balanced approach of India,” he said.

First Germany visit underscores growing ties

Speaking about his visit, Singh said it marked his first trip to Germany at the invitation of German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius. He described the engagement as a reflection of strengthening bilateral ties.

“This marks my very first visit to Germany. I am here on the invitation of the Defence Minister (German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius)… I believe that this is an achievement in itself; the relations between India and Germany have gradually become stronger with time…This year, 2026, is special for us, because this year, our formal diplomatic relations with Germany have been completed for 75 years…Our relations are based on democratic values, completely based on democratic values,” he said.

Highlighting the economic dimension, Singh said trade and industry have played a key role in cementing relations between the two countries over the decades.

“In the last 7 decades, our relations with Germany have strengthened in every sector. Today, Germany has become the largest trading partner of India in Europe. More than 2,000 German companies are active in India… Germany’s leading companies are also giving momentum to India’s industrial development and Make in India. On the other hand, many Indian companies are also making a strong presence in Germany,” he added.

No talks till blockade ends: Iran draws hard line as ceasefire tensions simmer in Hormuz

Iran links future negotiations with the US to lifting of a naval blockade, even as fresh maritime tensions and economic stakes keep the Strait of Hormuz crisis on edge.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Iran has made it clear that any fresh round of negotiations with the United States will hinge on one key step – lifting of the ongoing US naval blockade, according to its envoy at the United Nations.

The demand comes at a time when a fragile ceasefire remains under strain in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route. While diplomatic channels appear open, Tehran’s insistence on the blockade issue signals how deep mistrust continues to define the standoff between the two sides.

Citing an interview with Rudlaw News Network at the UN Headquarters, Tasnim News Agency mentioned Iran’s UN Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani as saying that Washington must first end what he described as repeated violations of the ceasefire before any talks can move forward.

“The naval blockade of the United States, it is a violation of the ceasefire. And we told them that they should break this blockade. We have received some signs that they are ready to break it. And as soon as they break this blockade, I think that the next round of the negotiation will take place in Istanbul. Listen to them, we have not initiated the military aggression. They initiated the war against us, and we are ready. If they want to sit at the table and discuss and find a political solution, they will find us ready. If they want to go to the war, in this case, also Iran is ready for that,” Iravani said.

Blockade becomes central sticking point

The remarks indicate that although backchannel communication may still be active, the naval blockade remains the primary barrier preventing formal diplomatic engagement. Tehran’s position underscores that any movement towards talks is contingent on immediate de-escalation by Washington.

The statement also comes against the backdrop of a ceasefire extension announced by US President Donald Trump late Wednesday, aimed at creating space for diplomacy.

Trump claims Iran wants Hormuz reopened

Earlier, Trump suggested that Iran may be projecting defiance publicly while privately seeking relief from economic pressure caused by restricted access to the Strait of Hormuz.

“Iran doesn’t want the Strait of Hormuz closed; they want it open so they can make USD 500 million a day (which is, therefore, what they are losing if it is closed!)” he posted.

According to Trump, Tehran’s rhetoric on the waterway is aimed more at domestic and political audiences than its actual economic needs.

Fresh maritime incident raises stakes

Even as diplomatic messaging continues, tensions on the ground remain high. On Wednesday, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported that a container vessel was attacked by a gunboat linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The incident occurred about 15 nautical miles northeast of Oman. The ship’s master said the vessel was approached without any warning communication before being fired upon. While the bridge sustained significant damage, there were no reports of fire or environmental impact.

Strait of Hormuz remains flashpoint

The Strait of Hormuz continues to be the focal point of the crisis, given its importance as a key transit route for global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. If the situation drags on, it could start hitting global energy supplies and shipping routes in a big way.

Right now, both sides are talking and posturing at the same time, so while negotiations aren’t off the table, getting there won’t be straightforward.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

The festive buzz around Kerala’s grand temple season suddenly turned heavy, and the film world didn’t stay silent. What should have been days of celebrations became a moment of grief after a deadly blast in Thrissur. Soon, messages of shock began pouring in and one of the first voices came from Malayalam megastar Mammootty.

Taking to X, Mammootty wrote that he was shocked to hear about the tragic incident in Thrissur. He added that his heart went out to the family of the deceased and offered sincere prayers for those who were injured.

Soon after, another familiar face from Malayalam cinema, and now politics, Suresh Gopi also reacted. The Minister of State for Tourism & Petroleum and Natural Gas expressed deep pain over the explosion at the firecracker unit in Mundathikode, Thrissur.

In his post, he said his heart went out to the victims and their families during this devastating time, while praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Festival preparations turn tragic; PM announces relief

For those unaware, at least 13 people were killed and several others injured in the massive explosion that took place on Tuesday. The blast occurred at a fireworks preparation and storage shed linked to celebrations for Thrissur Pooram, one of India’s most celebrated temple festivals.

The explosion reportedly triggered a huge fire. Thick smoke spread across the area, causing panic among workers and nearby residents.

Condolences also came from the country’s top leadership. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as profoundly tragic and said he was anguished by the loss of lives. The tragedy, he noted, has cast a shadow over the region ahead of the upcoming festival.

He also announced financial relief: Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each deceased, and Rs 50,000 for those injured.

Ajith Kumar lands in Chennai after Belgium race, returns just in time to cast vote in Tamil Nadu elections

Fresh from an endurance race in Belgium, Ajith Kumar quietly returned to Chennai as videos of his airport arrival spread online. The actor made it back ahead of polling day, continuing his pattern of showing up to cast his vote

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Ajith Kumar has just flown back from Europe, and the timing had people talking. The actor had been busy racing in Belgium, yet he made sure to land in Chennai before voting day.

The actor had travelled to Belgium to participate in the intense endurance race at the legendary Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. The event, the 24H Series GT3 Pro-Am, demands long hours, coordination, and stamina.

Despite the demanding schedule, he returned to India before the Tamil Nadu State Assembly elections set for Thursday. Videos of him exiting the Chennai airport surfaced quickly, showing him quietly walking out without stopping.

Observers pointed out that this is not unusual. Ajith Kumar has a track record of planning his travel in a way that allows him to be back in time to vote. And this time, his close friend and colleague Vijay is contesting.

Racing weekend ends with second-place finish

Before the flight back, his team, Ajith Kumar Racing, had already wrapped up a major weekend. The team secured a second-place podium finish in the GT3 Pro-Am category at Spa-Francorchamps.

The announcement came through the team’s social media, which posted images of the podium celebration along with a short video clip. The message highlighted the P2 finish and described the result as a significant moment for the team. Pictures showed the team standing on the podium, while the short video captured the brief celebration after the race.

The actor had travelled to Belgium a week earlier to prepare for the endurance event. During that period, the team regularly shared updates of training photos, track preparation, and short clips.

Not the first podium

The recent second-place finish also connects to earlier results. Ajith Kumar Racing has previously secured podium finishes at the same circuit.

Last year, the team finished second at the Creventic Endurance Race at Spa-Francorchamps in the Porsche 992 GT3 Cup category. That result marked the third consecutive podium finish for the team in the Creventic Endurance Series.

The sequence started with a third-place finish at the Dubai Autodrome on January 11 last year. After that came another third-place finish at the Mugello Circuit on March 22, 2025. The run then continued with a podium finish again at Spa-Francorchamps.

BJP escalates its protest over Kharge’s remark on PM Modi, approaching the Election Commission and demanding both strict action and a public apology amid intensifying political rhetoric.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

A senior Bharatiya Janata Party delegation on Wednesday approached the Election Commission of India, urging it to act against Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over his controversial remark describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “terrorist”.

The complaint comes at a politically sensitive time, with sharp exchanges dominating campaign rhetoric. The BJP has framed Kharge’s comment as crossing a line, arguing it goes beyond political criticism and strikes at the dignity of the Prime Minister’s office.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, who was part of the delegation along with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, said the party met the poll panel with “grief and anger”.

“Today, a high level delegation of BJP met with the Election Commission. We have met the EC with grief and anger because normally we meet the EC for election process related work but today our delegation went for the derogatory remarks made by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This is not a BJP issue but an issue for the entire nation. Calling the PM of the country, a terrorist, you can understand the level of low the Congress has touched in terms of respecting an individual and the democracy. I don’t think any political party has ever used such insulting remarks against a PM,” he stated.

Rijiju said the delegation has asked the Election Commission to initiate “strict action” and demanded that Kharge apologise to the nation.

‘PM represents the country, not a party’: Rijiju

Sharpening his attack, Rijiju said the Prime Minister represents the entire country and not just a political party.

“The PM is not just a party’s PM but a country’s PM. He has been elected as the PM of the world’s largest democracy. Congress has often made derogatory remarks against PM, whether its vile, poisonous snake, commander-in-chief, and what not. But today they crossed all boundaries. PM Narendra Modi is considered as a global leader and the ideal of democracy. We have requested the EC that if any political party uses such language, then it is not a BJP issue, but a cheap tactic in the democracy. We have thus, asked for a strict action on this and also that Kharge should apologise to the entire nation. So that no one dares to disrespect the PM of the country and that in the presence of EC, no political party can make such remarks,” he added.

Election Commission takes cognisance

According to Rijiju, the Election Commission has acknowledged the complaint and indicated that the matter will be examined.

“The EC has taken cognisance of the matter. We have been assured that an investigation will be done in the matter,” he said.

Rijiju also drew a sharp political line, asserting that the government under Modi would continue to act firmly against terrorism while voters would respond to the Congress politically.

“The investigation that EC has to do is different. But the terrorist who fight against our country will be finished under the leadership of same PM Modi, who has been called a terrorist. The public will punish the Congress, as PM Modi will punish the terrorists,” he said.

What Kharge said in Tamil Nadu speech

The controversy traces back to Kharge’s speech on the final day of campaigning in Tamil Nadu, where he criticised the AIADMK for aligning with the BJP and made pointed remarks about the Prime Minister.

“I also thank the Tamil Nadu people who have given MPs to us, that’s why we were able to fight and defeat the bill. This is the land of scientific thinking and ideals of Periyar, Dr. Ambedkar, Annadurai, great Kamaraj and Karunanidhi. These people stood for this women’s reservation, justice, equality, and fraternity. Modi is not for these principles and one more thing I want to tell how this AIADMK people who themselves put the photo of Annadurai, how can they join with Modi who is a terrorist and who won’t believe in equality, his party won’t believe in equality and justice and these people are joining with them, it means that they are weakening democracy, they are weakening the philosophy of Annadurai, Kamaraj, Periyar and Karunanidhi and Babasaheb Ambedkar. The Congress-DMK alliance will continue to deliver welfare, inclusive growth, quality education and accessible healthcare,” Kharge had said.

From jail cell to terror plot: NIA court jails LeT operative T Naseer, six others in Bengaluru radicalisation case

Seven men, including LeT-linked operative T Naseer, have been convicted in a Bengaluru prison case that exposed a covert network of inmate radicalisation and a planned escape bid.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

A special court of the National Investigation Agency has handed down seven-year jail terms to seven men, including alleged Lashkar-e-Taiba operative T Naseer, in a case that exposed how radicalisation and terror plotting were being carried out from inside a Bengaluru prison.

What has unsettled investigators is not just the crime, but the method. Officials say the group was quietly working to influence fellow inmates, turning the prison space into a recruitment ground and building a network aimed at pushing extremist activities beyond its walls.

According to the NIA, the accused had pleaded guilty to charges linked to case RC-28/2023/NIA/DLI. Along with Naseer, those convicted include Mohammed Faisal Rabbani, Zahid Tabrez, Syed Suhail Khan, Syed Mudassir Pasha, Mohammed Umar, and Salman Khan. Each of them has also been fined Rs 48,000 under provisions of the IPC, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Arms Act and Explosives Substances Act.

Plot hatched inside Bengaluru central prison

Investigators said the conspiracy was orchestrated within the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru, where Naseer was lodged. The plan allegedly involved identifying vulnerable inmates, radicalising them and preparing them for terror-related operations in India, furthering the agenda of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba.

The case was first registered by the Bengaluru Central Crime Branch in July 2023 after arms, ammunition and digital devices were seized from individuals suspected of planning attacks in the city. The probe was later handed over to the NIA after indications of a wider conspiracy emerged.

Escape plan and wider network uncovered

During the investigation, the agency uncovered a parallel plan to facilitate Naseer’s escape while he was being escorted from prison to court. Naseer, a life convict in multiple terror cases, was also an undertrial in the 2008 Bengaluru serial blast case at the time.

The NIA subsequently filed a chargesheet against 11 accused and one absconding suspect, identified as Junaid Ahmed. Efforts are ongoing to trace and arrest him.

In a significant development, one of the convicts, Salman Khan, was brought back to India after being extradited from the Republic of Rwanda through coordinated action between Indian and Rwandan authorities.

Concerns over prison radicalisation flagged earlier

Officials indicated that the methods used in the case resembled earlier instances of extremist networking inside prisons, particularly in sensitive regions like Jammu and Kashmir.

The issue of inmate radicalisation had also been highlighted by the Union Home Ministry in January 2023, which advised prison authorities across states to conduct de-radicalisation programmes and segregate inmates showing tendencies to influence others.

“The jail administration has to ensure that inmates inclined towards propagating the ideology of radicalisation and those who have the propensity and potential to negatively influence other inmates are housed in separate enclosures away from other inmates,” a letter by Deputy Secretary Arun Sobti had read.

‘Iran retains key military capabilities’: Pentagon reality check punctures Trump’s narrative of a weakened Iran

A Pentagon intelligence report has challenged US claims on Iran’s military losses, even as Washington extends the ceasefire and maintains pressure through a continued maritime blockade.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

A fresh intelligence assessment from the Pentagon has raised questions over the US administration’s claims about weakening Iran’s military, even as President Donald Trump announced a last-minute extension of the ceasefire with Tehran following an appeal from Pakistan’s leadership.

The development puts two parallel tracks in focus: a gap between internal US intelligence findings and public statements by top officials, and a renewed diplomatic pause in a tense standoff that has already seen failed negotiations and threats of escalation.

According to a report by NBC News, the Pentagon’s defence intelligence wing has concluded that Iran continues to retain its “key military capabilities”, suggesting that recent operations have not significantly eroded its core strength. The findings directly contrast with earlier remarks by Trump and US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, who had indicated that Tehran’s forces had suffered irreversible damage.

US intelligence assessment contradicts earlier claims

The intelligence report underlines that the Iranian military remains a formidable regional force despite recent engagements. This stands in sharp contrast to claims by the administration that Iran’s “air force has been destroyed” and its “navy decimated”, as cited in the NBC News report.

The assessment adds to growing scrutiny over the accuracy of public messaging from Washington at a time when military and diplomatic calculations remain tightly intertwined.

Trump extends ceasefire, keeps blockade in place

Amid these internal assessments, Trump confirmed that the ceasefire with Iran would be extended, just hours before its expiry. The decision followed what he described as a direct request from Pakistan’s leadership.

Calling the Iranian leadership “seriously fractured,” Trump said the maritime blockade on Iranian ports would continue until Tehran presents a “unified proposal” for negotiations.

In a post on Truth Social, he said the US had “been asked to hold our Attack on the Country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal.”

He added that he had “directed our Military to continue the Blockade and, in all other respects, remain ready and able,” making it clear that the pause in hostilities was conditional and temporary.

Tehran rejects US move, signals escalation

The extension drew an immediate pushback from Tehran. Mahdi Mohammadi, adviser to Iran’s parliament speaker, dismissed the move, asserting that the “losing side cannot dictate terms.”

He said the extension “means nothing” and called for a stronger military response against US forces. In a post on X, Mohammadi stated that “Trump’s extension of the ceasefire means nothing” as the “losing side cannot set the terms.”

He further argued that “continuing the siege is no different from bombing and must be responded to militarily,” warning that the move could be an attempt to buy time for a surprise strike. “It is time for Iran to take the initiative,” he added.

Talks in Islamabad failed to deliver breakthrough

The current situation follows the collapse of earlier diplomatic efforts, including a prolonged round of negotiations held in Islamabad. The talks, which lasted 21 hours, failed to produce a long-term agreement between the two sides, leaving the conflict unresolved and tensions high.

With intelligence reports saying one thing, leaders projecting another, and military realities adding their own pressure, the situation remains tense and unclear, with neither side willing to step back.

School introduces summer-friendly traditional mid-day meal

Amid intense heat, Zirat Colony High School has taken an innovative initiative to promote awareness about good health and eating habits among students.

Amid intense heat, Zirat Colony High School has taken an innovative initiative to promote awareness about good health and eating habits among students.

With temperatures soaring, today’s mid-day meal menu featured soaked rice, water infused with fragrant Gandharaj lemon leaves, potato chokha, egg bhujia, and a mango-based tadka prepared using fruit from the school’s own trees.

Although the weekly menu usually includes egg rice, the school introduced this special summer-friendly traditional meal keeping in mind the rising temperatures and their impact on schoolchildren.

According to the school authorities, the primary objective was to convey that soaked rice is beneficial in keeping the body cool while maintaining nutritional value during summer.

The initiative generated enthusiasm among students. Several of them, including Ayantika, Megha Saha, Bartik Shil and Taras Tudu, relished the meal and remarked that the new menu was preferable to items such as chowmein, biryani or meat-based preparations.

Acting headmaster Dr Abdul Sharif Shek said: “We want the mid-day meal to be seen not merely as food, but as a learning process related to food science and healthy dietary habits, including their role in regulating bodily functions.”

The initiative was led by teachers Sameer Chakraborty, Satyaki Banerjee and others.

School president Partha Chatterjee said: “During summer, soaked rice helps keep the body cool, aids digestion and provides energy. Our aim is to pass on this traditional food habit to the younger generation.”
