However, a crowd allegedly from the BJP also gathered at the spot and staged a protest against him. As the police brought Jasimuddin out, they hurled eggs at him, which prompted the security forces to use batons to control the situation.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Soma Das Mitra said in a statement, “Mohammad Jasimuddin (54), son of late Mohammad Amin of 95 MG Road, Kolkata 700007, under Jorasanko police station was arrested on June 7 at around 11.45 am from his residence in connection with Jorasanko police station case no. 104 dated 05.06.2026 under sections 223, 72, 79, 351(2) and 3(5) of the BNS along with section 23 of the POCSO Act. He was also arrested in connection with Jorasanko police station Case no. 105 dated 07.06.26 under sections 74, 79, 351(4), 115(2), 126(2), 118(1) and 3(5) of the BNS.”
Local sources claimed that some associates of the councillor had been named in a case involving the alleged harassment of a minor girl three years ago. The girl, who is now a college student, was allegedly harassed again on Saturday and was threatened to withdraw her complaint. The police subsequently registered a new FIR against Jasimuddin.
The FIR includes charges of criminal conspiracy, illegal acts, intimidation, outraging the modesty of a woman and disclosing the identity of a victim without consent.
Jasimuddin, a former Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader, joined the TMC before the 2015 municipal elections and went on to win two consecutive terms as councillor from Ward No. 39.
However, it has been claimed that his influence within the TMC has now declined following his part’s recent loss in the state assembly elections.
Jasimuddin’s arrest comes a day after the police arrested Bappaditya Dasgupta, the councillor of Ward No. 101 in Patuli, on charges of extortion. Dasgupta, had joined the TMC in 2010 jumping ship from the BJP. He had also served as the chief whip of the party’s councillors in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
