India’s demonetisation move leaves Nepal worried

The demonetisation has affected all nine districts of the border region and five districts in Karnali.

IANS | Kathmandu |

The demonetisation move has affected people in border regions of Nepal as most of them have been facing problems in exchanging their Indian currency of Rs 500 and 100 denomination.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes has been a cause of worry for most of the households in far-western regions of Nepal as youths from the hills head off to India to work and possess the demonetised currency notes, The Himalayan Times reported.
Tej Bahadur Singh from Bajura district of Nepal has Rs 50,000 in the 500 and 1000 denominations.
“This is all the saving of my son who works as a security guard in India. He has been saving money to buy some land, but ever since I’ve heard that these notes aren’t accepted anymore, I am very worried,” he said.
According to Tek Bahadur Shahi from Barhabisa, up to Rs 4 million in demonetised currency notes have been estimated from a village in the city.
“There are around 135 houses in the village and they are found to be in possession of up to four million rupees in 500 and 1000 rupee currency notes,” he said.
The demonetisation has affected all nine districts of the border region and five districts in Karnali.
Humla Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) district committee member Debachu Sarki said local traders and businessmen were exchanging the demonetised notes for Nepali currency.
Trader Bagadal Mall from Bajura also lamented the November 8 decision which has affected the neighbouring nation.
According to Banijya Bank (Bajura branch) senior assistant Jitjung Singh, many people are frequenting the bank to exchange their Indian currency notes these days.
“Nepal Rastra Bank is taking diplomatic initiatives. I think something will come out of it in a few days,” he said.

Voyage of a lifetime

Mehak Chauhan/thestatesman.com | New Delhi |

Slowly and smoothly she sways and slips into the forests, rattles on the bridges and glides next to the roads, rivers and lakes. On those never-ending tracks, the train takes us to places faraway. She takes you through tunnels and over the bridges.

The transitions are magnificent and touch your heart. From lush green meadows to shiny golden deserts, from a calm lake to flowing rivers, from the setting of sun to the rising of moon you can witness all of this and more.

Train travel is a big way of life for people in urban India. Indians, hence, have a special connection with trains. Every vacation can be associated with a train journey long or short and a vacation to some hill station has always been in our lists.

With the largest rail network in the world, India surely has a lot of routes to offer. Have you ever thought of taking a train ride to the hills? This time ditch the road and board a train to Shimla from Kalka. The English-style unusual toy train to Shimla is smaller than the usual. It comes under the world heritage list of UNESCO and occupies fourth rank in it. This tiny train takes five to six hours to reach Shimla and passes by beautiful towns and villages of Himachal like Dharampur, Solan, Kandaghat, Taradevi, Barog, Salogra, Totu and Summer Hill.

The beautiful slow-paced train takes you on curvaceous routes to the queen of hills and lets you relish the scenic beauty all around. It passes through 102 tunnels with Barog being the longest. It is the straightest tunnel in the world.

There is an interesting story about Barog which is told by the locals and surely gives goosebumps to the listeners. During the British Raj, an engineer named Colonel Barog was assigned the task to construct a tunnel. He personally dug from both the ends of the tunnel but failed to align them with each other. He was fined with One Rupee by the then British Government. He could not handle this humiliation and killed himself inside the tunnel. The place got its name from him and it is said that his spirit haunts the tunnel. He is known to be the happy ghost and some locals have shared their experiences of having a light hearted small talk with him. He is known to greet those who pass through the tunnel walking.

The cool fresh wind gives the ‘pahaadi’ (hilly) feels as you gaze at the tall mountains in shades of green and blue. Moving through the pine trees and forests you can feel the temperature transition as you reach higher altitudes slowly and gradually. Cool breeze and sun shining bright at the same time is rare and gives one of the best stimuli to your senses.

Every railway station that falls on the route has a unique essence of that place which is portrayed by their architecture. You will find kids with their school bags walking next to the track smiling and waving at you as the train passes by. The warmth with which the locals greet and welcome you makes you fall in love with the place a little more, each time.

Priyanka Gandhi to play key role in UP polls: Congress

Once the elections schedule will be announced, it will bring more clarity on her plans for campaign in the state.

PTI | New Delhi |

Priyanka Gandhi will campaign
for Congress and play a “major role” in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly
election to be held early next year, party leaders said on Friday.

“She (Priyanka) is going to play a major role. Let everything be
finalised,” UP Congress campaign committee chairman Sanjay Singh said.

“It has been decided that she will campaign for the party in the state
elections. She has accepted our request to campaign. Whenever we will get her
schedule, we will use her time accordingly,” Uttar Pradesh Congress
Committee chief Raj Babbar said.

He added that once the elections schedule will be announced, it will bring more
clarity on her plans for campaign in the state.

Earlier, Babbar had said Priyanka’s presence will give confidence and energy
not only to the party men but also to the people across the state.

He had also mentioned that if she gives enough time then Priyanka could
campaign in all the 403 constituencies in Uttar Pradesh.

In the past, Priyanka has not campaigned in elections outside Amethi and
Raebareli Lok Sabha constituencies, represented by her brother Rahul Gandhi and
mother Sonia Gandhi respectively.

A large section of Congress leaders believes that the party will gain immensely
if she campaigns across the state.

South Korea refuses Google access to official mapping data

South Korea  refused to grant permission to Google to use the official maps of the country, citing security concerns with neighbouring North Korea.

IANS | Seoul |

South Korea on Friday refused to grant permission to US tech giant Google to use the official maps of the country, citing security concerns with neighbouring North Korea.
This means the company’s Google Maps service in South Korea will continue operating with strict restrictions, Efe news reported.
South Korea based its decision on the National Security Law, established in 1947, which lays down strict restrictions to protect the country from North Korea.
The country’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said in a statement that Google will continue offering its services without being able to use government mapping data due to security reasons over the ongoing conflict between South and North Korea.
According to the ministry, Google did not accept Seoul’s suggestion to remove or blur important defence or government facilities on its maps, including military bases and the presidential Blue House, located north of the country’s capital.
Google has been offering its Maps service in South Korea since 2008 although it does not include walking or driving directions or 3D maps.
Local companies, including Naver and Daum and GPR operators have benefited the most from the restrictions on Google as their websites and applications offer complete map services.
The US company has been requesting for permission to use government mapping data since 2010.

Madrid derby highlight of weekend matches in Spanish league

Despite criticism of their performance, Real Madrid have a six point lead over their neighbours.

IANS | Madrid |

League football returns to Spain
following the international break with what could possibly be a season defining
game for both Real and Atletico Madrid on Saturday night.

The first Madrid derby of the season sees league leaders Real visit the Vicente
Calderon Stadium for the first time since their dramatic win over Atletico
Madrid on penalties in the Champions League final, media reported.

Despite criticism of their performance, Real Madrid have a six point lead over
their neighbours, who know defeat would virtually mean the end of this season’s
title challenge.

Diego Simeone’s side will be at virtually full strength as forward Antoine
Griezmann has recovered from the foot injury he suffered on international duty.
But Real Madrid have lost Alvaro Morata with a hamstring injury and although
Sergio Ramos and Luka Modric should be able to start, Tony Kroos is also
sidelined.

Real Madrid players Pepe, Karim Benzema and Casemiro are also doubtful due to
injuries.

If the game needed any further emotion, it will be the last league derby between
the two sides in the Calderon as Atletico prepare to move to their new ground
at the start of next season.

FC Barcelona have a magnificent chance to put the pressure on both their title
rivals when they take on Malaga earlier on Saturday afternoon. Andres Iniesta
is still sidelined for the Catalans and Samuel Umtiti has a muscle problem, but
Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba should be able to return following their injury
lay-offs to give a timely boost to Luis Enrique’s men.

A win for Barca against an improving Malaga would momentarily take them top of
the table and mean Real Madrid would need to win in the Calderon in order to
maintain the leadership.

However, Deportivo la Coruna, who will face high-flying Sevilla in Saturday’s
early kick off, are in trouble.

Deportivo are struggling for goals, while Sevilla, despite having the same
number of points as Atletico Madrid, have only one league win away from home in
the last 16 months.

A loss on Saturday could cost Deportivo coach Gaizka Garitano his job.

Eibar and Celta also play on Saturday, before Sunday kicks off with Espanyol’s
visit to play Alaves. Alaves took three vital points from Osasuna before the
international break, but have only one home win all season, while Espanyol’s
two wins have both come on the road.

Valencia will hope to get back to winning ways at home to rock bottom of the
table Granada,, while third from bottom Sporting Gijon have a tough game at
home to in-form Real Sociedad before Sunday’s best game sees Athletic Club
Bilbao entertain Villarreal.

Third placed Villarreal have lost just once all season and are unbeaten in
seven of their last 10 visits to Bilbao, while the home side, who recover Mikel
San Jose, Aymeric Laporte and Benat after injury, will look to veteran striker
Aritz Aduriz, who has scored 10 goals against Sunday’s rivals, to lead them to
victory.

The Big Bang Theory actress and Sweeting split in September 2015 after just 21 months of marriage and she sought solace in her beloved equines to get through her sadness, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

PTI | New Delhi |

Gold and jewellery establishments in the national capital remained shut for the 8th day today after Income Tax Department on November 10 carried out surveys following reports of alleged profiteering and tax evasion by traders as government demonetised high value currency note.
The survey operations were carried out in at least four locations, including the popular Dariba Kalan, Chandni Chowk and Karol Bagh.
The government last week demonetised high denomination of 500 and 1,000 Rupee notes to flush out black money.
Most of the jewellery showrooms here have been closed since November 11.
According to sources, the officials of Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence (DGCEI), an intelligence arm under the Finance Ministry, has sent notices to these jewellers seeking details of the gold sales.
They have been asked to give details like quantity of stock held by them and sales made during these days.

La Liga clash: Atletico seeks retaliation against Real Madrid

Atletico will be hosting Real Madrid at its Vicente Calderon Stadium in round 12 of La Liga.

IANS | Madrid |

Atletico Madrid will be hosting crosstown rival Real Madrid at its Vicente Calderon Stadium in round 12 of La Liga, which will be their first capital derby following the 2015-16 UEFA Champions League football final that Real Madrid won.
The derby will take place on Saturday after the international pause and will be the last between the two teams at the Vicente Calderon, as the Atletico side will be moving to the renovated La Peineta stadium on the outskirts of the city as of next year, reports Efe.
Since the beginning of the season, coach Diego Simeone's men have not lost a game at the Calderon, while Real Madrid, leader of La Liga standings on 27 points, is the only team that has not suffered a defeat this season.
Currently, Atletico is fourth, four points behind Madrid.
Two weeks before El Clasico against Barcelona at the Camp Nou on December 3, Real Madrid, coached by Frenchman Zinedine Zidane, will have to play the Madrid derby without Germany midfielder Toni Kroos, who is recovering from a broken foot and Alvaro Morata, who picked up a muscle injury. Both will be sidelined until the end of the year.
Sergio Ramos and Luka Modric will return to the field against the Rojiblancos, who are seeking to keep their clean derby record, which stretches over the past three years.
This will be a chance for Atletico to avenge its defeat against the Merengues in the Champions League final last May, which in itself was a repetition to the 2013-14 final loss.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid is looking forward to sustain its place at the top of the standings, especially given that Barcelona is chasing in second place, just two points behind Los Blancos.
Barcelona has a good chance to win this week against Malaga, which holds the 10th position with just 15 points.
However, Uruguay forward Luis Suarez will not be present due to suspension, while the team might gain back the services of Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba after they both recovered.
On the other hand, Villarreal in the third place with 22 points will be visiting Athletic Bilbao, which holds the 7th place with 17 points.
On Saturday, Deportivo La Coruna will be hosting Sevilla, while Eibar will be facing Celta Vigo.
The 12th round will kick off on Friday when Real Betis hosts Las Palmas.
On Sunday Alaves plays Espanyol, while Valencia will host Granada, which failed to snatch a single win since the beginning of the season.
Sporting Gijon will welcome Real Sociedad, while the round will conclude on Monday with a match between Leganes and Osasuna.

UN calls urgency meet for combating climate change

Nearly 200 countries on Friday called for highest political commitment to combat climate change on urgent priority at a UN gathering.

PTI | Marrakesh |

Nearly 200 countries on Friday called for “highest political commitment” to combat climate change on “urgent priority” at a UN gathering here, noting that global climate is warming at an “alarming and unprecedented” rate.
The “Marrakesh Action Proclamation”, which was agreed upon by all the parties — 196 nations and the EU bloc — taking part in the summit, was read out at the Conference of Parties (CoP) Plenary session which said it was an “urgent duty to respond” to global warming.
This can be termed as one of the main outcomes of the ongoing crucial summit on climate change.
“Our climate is warming at an alarming and unprecedented rate and we have an urgent duty to respond… we call for the highest political commitment to combat climate change, as a matter of urgent priority.
“We call for strong solidarity with those countries most vulnerable to the impact of climate change, and underscore the need to support efforts aimed to enhance their adaptive capacity, strengthen resilience and reduce vulnerability,” the proclamation said.
“We, Heads of State, government, and delegations, gathered in Marrakech for the high-level segment of the 22nd Session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change… issue this proclamation to signal a shift towards a new era of implementation and action on climate and sustainable development,” the proclamation said.
Nations while welcoming the Paris Agreement, its rapid entry into force, ambitious goals, inclusive nature and its reflection of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities, also affirmed their commitment for its full implementation.
India had pushed for inclusion of sustainable lifestyle with minimum carbon footprint and a clear cut mention of flow of funds in the draft of the political proclamation which was earlier made.
“We, the Developed Country Parties, reaffirm our USD 100 billion mobilisation goal,” the proclamation said.
It also called for an increase in the “volume, flow and access” to finance for climate projects, alongside improved capacity and technology, including from developed to developing countries.
Environment Minister Anil Madhav Dave had during his recent statement in the high-level segment of the summit noted that access to adequate finance remains an “overriding concern” for India.
He had said that it is “critical” that developed countries provide finance and technology transfer support to developing nations.

Force 2 review: Stuttering sequel

While Force was a decent action flick when it released in 2011, its sequel Force 2 is anything but entertaining.

Prithviraj Dev | New Delhi |

Movie: Force 2
Director: Abhinay Deo
Cast: John Abraham, Sonakshi Sinha,
Rating: **
Move over Salman bhai, there is a new shirtless hero in town.
Yes, this is 2016 but apparently viewers still haven’t got enough of the abs-craze, so John Abraham struts his stuff sans-shirt for the opening five minutes, thrashing goons in the most ridiculous of manners along the way.
While Force was a decent action flick when it released in 2011, its sequel Force 2 is anything but entertaining.
Abraham revisits his role as unhinged-but-still-Mumbai’s-best police officer, ACP Yashvardhan and has the by-the-book RAW officer Kamaljeet Kaur(Sonakshi Sinha) for company.
One breaks through walls with sheer will while the other does SWOT analysis to catch the villain. No prizes for guessing who does what.
Abhinay Deo had pulled out the proverbial rabbit out of the hat with his directorial debut, Delhi Belly, but proves that with Force 2, perhaps that was just a flash in the pan. With a weak script and no exceptional actors to boast off, this film has a runtime of 127 mins but yawns will come long before the end-credits.
The ‘star’ actors' performances’ feel ‘forced’ (pun intended), Abraham just flexing his considerable biceps at every other instance and screechy and wild-eyed on the other. Sinha, on the other hand, looks out of place, with her make-up always intact, her most remarkable achievement, considering the number of near-death brushes she overcomes!
The bad guy of the film Tahir Raj Bhasin, is decent, as he keeps the nation’s finest on their toes with his devious planning. A big minus is the cliched soundtrack that is deemed mandatory with every appearance of his, which is intended to intimidate the audience, but just ends up being annoying. While he is an engaging antagonist, his done-to-death motives which are revealed towards the climax are a let-down to say the least.
Thankfully there aren't any song and dance sequences, one of its few saving graces but all in all, Force 2 is a movie only to be watched if one has a lot of money and time to waste.
