NIA asks banks to freeze accounts of Naik, IRF

PTI | New Delhi |

Seeking to starve controversial preacher Zakir Naik and his organisation of funds, the NIA on Wednesday asked banks to freeze accounts belonging to him and his Islamic Research Foundation, which has been banned under the anti-terror law.
Official sources said all the banks, where Naik’s and his organisation’s accounts were in operation, have been asked to immediately freeze those till further directions.
NIA had registered a case against Naik, IRF and unnamed office bearers of the foundation under section 153-A of IPC (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), besides various sections of anti-terror law Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
Following this searches were conducted for three days at 20 premises during which details of bank accounts and other financial activities related to Naik and IRF were seized.
The sources said the move to block his bank accounts was taken after the NIA claimed to have seized documents which showed ISIS recruit Abu Anas had received Rs.80,000 from the IRF as scholarship in October 2015.
Anas, an engineer and a resident of Tonk in Rajasthan, had quit job in a Hyderabad-based company when he was arrested by the NIA in January for allegedly planning to carry out a terror strike ahead of Republic Day.
The NIA claimed the probe into the IRF’s funding and distribution of money showed that Anas, who was among 16 people arrested for ISIS links at that time, had received Rs 80,000 from IRF as scholarship.
NIA has also written to Union Home Ministry for banning the webiste run by the IRF and as well as suspending its online activities which inlcudes videos of speeches on social networking sites, the sources said.
The Home Ministry will pass on the request to Information Technology ministry for blocking the Universal Resource Locator (URL) of the website.
The NIA has been conducting searches since November 19 and raided at least 20 premises in Mumbai which are connected to the proscribed IRF or its trustees.
During the search operations, video tapes and DVDs of Naik’s public speeches, documents related to property and investment, financial transactions, foreign and domestic funding to IRF as well as its associated companies, and electronic storage devices have been recovered.
The NIA alleged that IRF, which was banned by the government last week under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), had close connections with some companies dealing in media, perfumes and some other sectors.

No outlet to vent my personal issues: Shah Rukh Khan

IANS | Mumbai |

He is known as the “Badshah of Bollywood”, has delivered several blockbuster films in 25 years of his career, has millions of fans wanting to catch just a glimpse of him, but superstar Shah Rukh Khan says he does feel “lonely at times” and has “no venting” for his personal issues.
While he is essaying the role of a psychiatrist to actress Alia Bhatt’s character in the film Dear Zindagi, which is releasing on Friday, Shah Rukh says that when it comes to his own personal life, he doesn’ talk to anybody or ask for advice.
“I am very cloistered, very shell like. I feel awkward talking about my personal feeling. As a matter of fact, (when) a friend does talk to me about my personal feelings, I get very awkward,” Shah Rukh said here in an interview.
The 51-year-old says that he doesn’t think he will ever “seek professional” help unless he is “admitted” to an asylum.
“I don’t know how to behave (when people talk about personal issues), I am very shy. I don’t talk to the closest people I have about my feelings. And if somebody brings it up… like Karan (filmmaker Karan Johar) actually is the closest and he once in London said something to me ‘Bhai you know…’, I said ‘No don’t talk to me about this'”.
“It’s not that I am uncomfortable about my personal feelings, I keep them to myself. Never! I don’t think I will ever seek professional advice unless I am admitted to an asylum because people think so and force me to, I have never sought any advice,” the “My Name is Khan” actor said.
Asked that since he doesn’t vent out, doesn’t his head become busy?
“Yes, my head does become busy with a lot of thoughts. I just live with it. It makes you little lonely, makes you a little sad. No, I don’t even go on a little roof and scream out, I have no venting for my personal issues and emotions except for the fact that I am an actor,” Shah Rukh said.
The star says that he expresses his real emotions via screen, taking advantage of the emotional scenes that he has to shoot.
“I come on screen and I take it out. There are days when I cry on screen and that could be actual tears but I don’t make a big deal out of it. Other days I just could be very happy on a scene and that could be my personal feeling,” he said.
Being a father to two teenagers, people often wonder if he advises his children and talks to them about their relationships in general? Shah Rukh says that he has never sat down with Suhana,16, and Aryan, 19.
“I don’t talk to my children about relationships. I don’t talk to them about anything that they don’t wish to talk with me. So if they call me and they come and say ‘listen I was wanting to know this papa’ I will talk to them about it but I would never say sit down I need to talk to you about the birds and the bees or talk to you about relationships.”
He says his “most personal question to my son and daughter is ‘How is it going?, How is it on the personal front? they said fine (I am assuming on the personal front accounts for their personal relationships as well) apart from that I have never asked what they do, how they do, where they do and whenever they ask me for advice, its not really been so serious. But If they do… of course they give me advice on not smoking, but I have never sat down and given them advice,” he added.

Rupinder’s double in vain as India loses 3-2 to Australia

India failed to impress in the first match of the four Nations Invitational Tournament in Melbourne as Australia outclassed them by 3-2.

SNS | New Delhi |

Under the captaincy of VR Raghunath, India failed to impress in the first match of the four Nations Invitational Tournament in Melbourne as the hosts Australia outclassed them by 3-2 on Wednesday.
Australia started an aggressive game since the start, though it was Rupinder-led Indian defence that stood tall in front of their way.
Indian drag-flicker Rupinder Pal Singh earned the breakthrough in the 21st minute as he found the back the back of the net via a penalty corner.
Australia’s Jeremy Hayward scored an equaliser in the 24th minute through a PC to take the Aussies to level 1-1 against India, just before the half time.
The second half saw a more resilient Australia who kept on attacking for a lead. They got success early in the third quarter as Hayward struck his second goal in the 36th minute to extend Australia’s lead over India.
Trentt Mitton scored in the 43rd minute through a PC, to conclude the third quarter in the best possible way for Australia. India looked harassed by this time and continued to falter in the final quarter as well.
Star drag-flicker Rupinder stuck his second in the 53th minute to keep some hopes alive, though it couldn’t help much. The final score read 3-2 and Australia sealed the victory.
India will next face Malaysia on Thursday in their second match of the tournament.

LS washed out for 5th day over demonetisation

PTI | New Delhi |

Lok Sabha witnessed a virtual washout for the fifth consecutive day on Wednesday as government and opposition parties continued to clash over the demonetisation issue and the rule under which a debate should take place on it, with the former ruling out any provision of voting in the discussion.
Opposition members, including those from Congress, TMC, RJD, CPI(M) and BJD, besides SAD and Shiv Sena, both part of the ruling NDA, expressed their views in the House when it assembled at noon after one adjournment, with the Sena changing its stance on demonetisation and sparing the government of embarrassment by praising the move and supporting its stand that the debate be held under Rule 193, which does not entail voting.
Sena had been critical of the demonetisation move and its members even joined a TMC-led protest march to the President last week, but softened their stand after a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday.
The House saw continued protests by Opposition members soon after it assembled for the day, with Congress and TMC MPs trooping into the Well, forcing its adjournment first till noon and later for the day.
Speaking soon after the House was reconvened at noon, Mallikarjun Kharge (Cong) said they were ready for a discussion under Rule 56, which entails voting.
“But a message has gone out that the opposition is not ready for discussion. People are distressed, people are at pain and we want to discuss their problems. What we want is that the Prime Minister should be present here. You (Speaker) should allow us the adjournment motion,” he said.
Modi was present in the House briefly during Question Hour, during which only one question could be taken up amid the opposition’s din which led to the first adjournment.
Taking a dig at the Prime Minister, Kharge said it is being told outside Parliament that a few people are supporting black money. “But the fact is that ruling party is supporting black money and not allowing the discussion to take place in the House.”
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said the government is willing to discuss the issue any time and it may not be a short duration debate but could “go on for 1-2-3 days.”
“If the opposition offers any constructive suggestion, we will heed to it, implement it. We have launched a campaign against black money, fake currency and corruption and people of India are supporting Modi,” Kumar said.

Mamata accuses Modi govt of ‘snatching’ people’s saving

SNS | New Delhi |

Taking the protest to the street in Delhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday lashes out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his demonetisation move.
Speaking at a protest against demonetisation outside Jantar Mantar here, the Trinamool Congress chief said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government is snatching away people’s saving.
“The Modi government is trying to snatch away people’s savings. When our country’s economy was moving at a steady rate, the government brought in demonetisation that stifled the country,” Banerjee said.
Accusing the Modi government of creating hardship to the common people, Banerjee said that “most of industries are on standstill, labour and working class is not getting their daily wages and not able to eat anything”.
Banerjee in her address maintained that the Trinamool Congress’ protest is not about election.
“This protest is not about election. The government should understand that whatever they did is affecting normal people.” Banerjee said.
The TMC chief also said that the BJP will see the impact of demonetisation in the upcoming elections.
“I challenge the BJP that this time nobody will support their party, even their own workers will abandon them. The BJP will get a reply for demonetisation in the upcoming elections,” she added.

India taking softer line towards Sirisena govt: Sri Lanka’s ex-leader

Former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has accused India of taking a softer line towards the Maithripala Sirisena government over its policies towards China.

PTI | Colombo |

Former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has accused India of taking a softer line towards the Maithripala Sirisena government over its policies towards China, as he embarked on a week-long visit to Beijing to meet top Chinese leadership.
Ahead of his trip to China on the invitation of the Chinese government, Rajapaksa while talking to reporters on Tuesday recalled the “tensions” his administration encountered with India.
Recalling an incident where Chinese submarines had docked at the Colombo port, the former President said, “They (India) were furious when submarines docked at Colombo. From what I know, the Chinese inform the Indian embassy in Beijing before a submarines enters the Indian Ocean. But they made a huge cry about it.”
On the contrary, he said, India is now silent as the present government of his successor Maithripala Sirisena handing over to China the port in Hambantota.
China was Rajapaksa’s main international ally when it supported him at international fora and funded his mega development projects, mainly in his home district of Hambantota.
“They (New Delhi) made a big issue about the submarines, but today even if you give the entire port (to China), it is not a problem for them (India). This shows the difference in diplomatic relations,” he said, accusing India of taking a softer line towards the Sirisena government.
“The government is trying to give land from Trincomalee to India. To China from Hambantota. They are trying to give 1,000 acres to Japan to grow vegetables,” he said.
During his week-long visit to China, Rajapaksa will meet the leaders of the Chinese Government on November 28 and is scheduled to stay in Guangzou and Beijing.
He will visit the Dafo Monastery, free trade zones and the city of Shenzen.
The former president is accompanied by Parliamentarian Lohan Ratwatte, former foreign minister Prof GL Peiris and others.
Rajapaksa’s visit to China assumes much significance in the wake of a recent public spat between Beijing and Colombo.
Chinese Ambassador Yi Xianliang called a rare press conference and criticised Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake for his statement that Chinese had lent money to Rajapaksa government at high rates of interest.
Ambassador Yi said minister Ravi Karunanayake was asking for more Chinese loans after publicly criticising the Chinese funding as “expensive loans.”
The Sri Lankan finance minister said he was happy to pay back Chinese loans at 2 per cent if the Ambassador says he would be happy to lower the interest rates.

“I have been working hard on myself for a lot of years.Everyday has been like a struggle because this isn’t like a theory exam where 2+2 is 4. There is no clear path to reach your destination..but yes so far so good,” he added.
Aditya started at a young age, playing a boy who fantasizes about a much older woman Manisha Koirala in Ek Chotisi Love Story. In hindsight, he has no regrets starting with a film that raised quite a few eyebrows.
“No, at all. The story was very relatable. I had a crush on my teacher and it garnered me a lot of recognition. I remember meeting Anil Kapoor sir and introducing myself with that film,” he said.

‘Come to Parliament and answer on demonetisation’

IANS | New Delhi |

Accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “wreaking havoc” on the lives of the poor and common people through demonetisation, Janata Dal-United leader Sharad Yadav on Wednesday day warned the Prime Minister against evading Parliament.
Taking a stand different from party President and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on demonetisation, Yadav joined a protest rally called by Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee here against demonetisation.
“You (Modi) can address a musical concert but cannot answer the opposition in Parliament. It is not your minister who brought the demonetisation, it is your decision, so the responsibility lies with you to give answers to the questions that are being raised,” Yadav said at a rally here in Jantar Mantar.
“Today, the farmers are ruined, the workers are starving and the common people are queuing up in banks leaving aside their livelihood. Demonetisation has wreaked havoc on the lives of the common people.
“Who is responsible for the all the destruction that is being suffered by the people of they country? It is your responsibility but you don’t come to Parliament,” said Yadav.
He warned that if Modi continues to evade Parliament and fails to give answers, people will bring in a revolution.
“Come to Parliament and tell us the reasons. And if you don’t, then remember, the Congress once had imposed Emergency and people had given a befitting reply then.
“Come to Parliament and tell why you wreaked havoc in the houses of farmers, fishermen, the poor, the common man.
“You must have heard of revolution, people will show you what revolution means,” added Yadav.
While the opposition has been closing ranks and mounting a united fight against Modi over the demonetisation, Nitish Kumar has supported the Centre’s move to spike Rs.500 and Rs.1,000 notes.
