SNS | New Delhi |

Air India on Tuesday cancelled Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad’s ticket for the second time after he was barred by the airline for allegedly assaulting their staffer.

Gaikwad's Mumbai-Delhi ticket was cancelled for hitting AI staffer R Sukumar several times with his slippers over seating issue.

The tussle broke out after he was denied business class on a Pune-New Delhi on March 23.

The Sena leader was banned by AI and other top airlines with ‘immediate effect’ on March 24 and he boarded a train to Mumbai later in the evening.

Defiant Gaikwad refused to offer any apologies to the victim.

“Kaahe ka pashchaataap (what is there to repent)? I will not apologise. He (Sukumar) should come and apologise. Then we will see. A 60-year-old man should know how to behave,” Gaikwad had said.

Jaitley hopes GST Bill will be passed through consensus

IANS | New Delhi |

Describing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill as "revolutionary", Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday hoped all the political parties would pass the related bills through consensus in the current session of Parliament.

Jaitley's remarks came at the BJP parliamentary party meeting which was also attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior ministers of the government.

"GST Bill is revolutionary and I hope that its passage will be ensured in Parliament in the current Budget session," Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar quoted Jaitley as saying.

Kumar said that discussions on the GST Bill will take place in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

The senior BJP leader said that Jaitley briefed the BJP MPs about the CGST, IGST, UT GST and GST Compensation Bills introduced in the House on Tuesday and hoped that the bills would be passed in the present session through consensus.

Kumar said passage of the GST Bill will benefit the people as well as economy.

India moved a step closer to becoming a unified market with the tabling in Parliament on Monday of the GST Bill, which extends pan-India except to Jammu and Kashmir.

Jaitley introduced the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Bill, 2017, along with three other related bills in the Lok Sabha, providing for a maximum GST rate of 40 per cent, an anti-profiteering authority and imprisonment for evading taxes.

The GST will subsume various indirect levies of the Centre and states like service tax, excise duty, octroi and value added tax (VAT) and create an input tax credit chain for refunds.

The CGST Bill will enable levy and collection of tax on intra-state supply of goods and services or both by the central government.

Apart from GST, the parliamentary party also discussed Congress leader and former union minister M.V. Rajasekharan's letter showering praise on the Prime Minister and union cabinet's decision to set up a National Commission for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes with constitutional status.

Yash Tonk takes ‘gurudakshina’ from co-actors

IANS | Mumbai |

Actor Yash Tonk, who will be seen in the TV show Jaat Ki Jugni, has been taking fees from his co-stars for conducting Haryanvi language training sessions on set.

"It's fun to take 'gurudakshina' from co-actors for teaching them Haryanvi. So every other day, someone or the other is giving me a treat or the entire unit of Jaat Ki Jugni," Yash said in a statement.

The fee is to do with food.

An insider from the set of the Sony Entertainment Television show said: "The actors requested him to provide Haryanvi training sessions. He has accepted their request provided they pay fees to him. So on a daily basis, his co-actors get trained by him and give him 'gurudakshina'. Yash demands delicious food from them and asks them to distribute sweets to everyone on set."

Volvo cars to get costlier from April

SNS | New Delhi |

The Indian arm of the Swedish carmaker Volvo has announced that from April 2017, its entire fleet of cars on sale in India will get hiked price tags. The ex-showroom prices will undergo an upward revision of up to 2.5 per cent. The company says that this change is directly linked to the rise of input costs, which affects all models sold in India.

Volvo Cars currently sells eight luxury models, that poke their cases into the German dominated world of Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi, in India. The Swedish automaker currently retails the S60, S60 Cross Country, V40, V40 Cross Country, XC60, XC90, XC90 Excellence and the S90. At the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show, Volvo unveiled the new XC60 which will also go on sale in India in 2018.

We heard of a similar announcement from Honda Cars India recently that it too will hike prices at the start of the next fiscal year. While what automakers claim that they are losing money because of high input costs might be true, what’s really ironic is the timing of such steps of hiking prices. This time around the price hike is very conveniently slated for April 2017. This suspiciously equates to an act for more sales numbers and meet 2016-17 fiscal year targets.

A similar act was planned by most of the game players towards the end of last year. Nearly all of them announced that due to the rise of input costs, prices for their offerings will be hiked from January 2017. Again, clearing up stocks from 2016 is of utmost priority for every carmaker and this price hike gimmickry was just to cover that.

Will smile more when we win overseas: Virat Kohli

Kohli said that he would wear a 'broader smile' on his face once the current team conquers an overseas season.

PTI | Dharamsala |

India captain Virat Kohli on Tuesday said that he would wear a "broader smile" on his face once the current team conquers an overseas season.

Asked why he does not look happy even after 10 wins in 13 Tests over India's longest home season in recent times, the skipper replied, "It is a classic case of understanding that this is not the end of anything."

"No need to get over excited with whatever we have done."

"We are very happy with No. 1 ranking in the world but our main challenge begins now. If we can conquer the overseas season, that's when you will see a broader smile on my face when I sit down for the press conference."

For Kohli, the biggest gain has been building a team for the future with all these wins at home.

"It is a very proud moment. Playing good cricket all season, especially in the home season, we dominated all of it," he said.

"It was very important for a young side to do so and build a team for the future so that we can give such performances consistently. That we did in this whole season and it was important how we responded to difficult situations."

Kohli also acknowledged the hard yards put in by the support staff in team's success.

"The credit goes to all of them, support staff s role is not highlighted much but their contribution is nearly 40 percent because they handle the players' mindset and their skills and working hard with them, giving them good feedback, so these are important things. So this is a team effort, rather this is a squad effort because it involves everyone."

"Credit goes to everyone in this squad."

Kohli praised Ajinkya Rahane's captaincy and revealed that it was his deputy who was in favour of playing five bowlers. Kuldeep Yadav was picked because of his X-factor.

"I spoke to Jinks (Rahane s team nickname) before the game and he asked me what I feel. I said, this is your game and you have to be comfortable with playing play four or five bowlers. He instantly said five bowlers because he understands the workloads of the guys throughout the whole season."

"So that fifth bowler, that was Anil bhai and Jinks and myself, we all had a discussion. Kuldeep was the X factor, they hadn t played him, they hadn t seen him much and he turned out to the difference in the game.

"I think from 130 for 1 to 300 all out on the same day can really demoralise the opposition. And I think it was a great call on Jinx and Anil bhai's part."

Zayn Malik worried about Harry Styles’s solo album

IANS | Los Angeles |

Singer Zayn Malik is worried that his former One Direction bandmate Harry Styles could "overshadow" him in the future with his debut album.

"Zayn has been flying high on his success as a solo artist, but he's stressing out big time now that Harry's coming out with a new album," a source told Hollywood Life magazine.

Malik has been working hard on his solo career since leaving the British boyband back in 2015. He released his breakthrough solo album Mind of Mine in 2016 and has gained much success ever since. But now, he is worried that Styles is going to steal his "thunder" with a new LP, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

"Out of all the One Direction guys, Harry is the one Zayn has always felt the most competitive with, and with good reason," the source added.

Malik has been hearing from music insiders that Style's solo effort will dominate the charts because it's "edgy and different".

Styles has teased his project in a television ad and announced April 7 as the release date of the much-anticipated song.

Share your Live Location privately with Messenger

IANS | New York |

Facebook Messenger has added a new feature Live Location that lets you share — for an hour within a private direct or group message thread — your real-time location on a map.

"Live Location is super helpful when trying to coordinate with friends, telling people how close you are when you're on your way to an appointment or even sharing where you are with your roommate when you're on your way home at night," Tech Crunch quoted the feature's product manager Selena Wang as saying.

The feature was available for all iOS and Android Messenger users from Monday.

David Marcus, Head of Messenger, said, "Many of us make plans on Messenger that involve finding each other, or letting friends and loved ones know we're on the way. Sharing your location will also help some of you feel safer on the way home."

To use Live Location, a user can tap the Location button inside a message thread or find it in the More menu. Then on the map, tap the blue bar to start sharing your Live Location.

The recipients will see user's exact current location on a map for 60 minutes, and an estimated time of arrival by car for you to reach them.

A clock in the corner of the map counts down until your location sharing expires, and you can hit 'Stop Sharing' at any time.

The company has said Live Location uses a standard amount of battery and it does not drain the battery quickly.

Salesgirl shot dead in Gurugram market

IANS | Gurugram |

An 18-year-old salesgirl was shot dead by a man in a busy market here, the city police said on Tuesday.

The girl, identified as Gunjan, worked at a Patanjali store at an upscale Sector 21 market in Palam Vihar area here.

Talking to media, Assistant Commissioner of Police Jai Singh said the killing took place late on Monday night. Pawan Kumar, a resident of Chauma village in Gurugram district, went to the store where Gunjan was employed and shot her at point-blank range as she came out of the store after her working hours.

The fatally shot girl was rushed to nearby Columbia Asia Hospital but she was declared dead by the doctors.

The girl's father said that his daughter was on a few occasions harassed by the 28-year-old Kumar, who hails from Haryana's Jhajjar.

He added that he complained to the police regarding the harassment, but the police took no action.

Several police teams have been formed and are conducting raids at various places to arrest the accused, the Assistant Commissioner of Police said.

India vs Australia: Stat-attack from Border-Gavaskar Trophy

India won the four-match Test series 2-1 to regain the sparkly Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Akash Khanna | New Delhi |

Under the captaincy of Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane, India won the four-match Test series 2-1 to regain the sparkly Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala on Tuesday.

The series witnessed high-sparking clashes and every session of a Test match was extremely exciting to watch.

En route, a few cricketers marked their impressions and a few broke records on top of that.

Pune Test: Gargantuan target by Australia

India entered the battleground being home favourites, though they couldn’t start well. Riding on a strokeful century by skipper Steve Smith, Australive give India a 441-un target to win, their third-highest in India.

The top two targets, 542 in Nagpur and and 456 in Bangalore, were given by the Aussies in the 2004-05 series. Australia won both the matches and this one as well.

Spectators in Pune witnessed captain Smith scoring his fifth consecutive Test century against India. Before the series, the 27-year-old hit a hundred in each match of Australia’s 2014-15 home series.

On the other hand, India continued to falter with losing their last seven wickets for  11 runs, their worst ever in Test cricket.

Star player Virat Kohli also failed to shine in Pune, in fact his 13 runs from both the innings (0, 13) was marked to be his lowest-ever in a home Test, where he batted in both innings.

Bangalore Test: KL Rahul – the impeccable opener

Batting in front of his home crowd, KL Rahul smashed 90 and 51 runs in two innings to drive the hosts to a 75-run win in Bangalore to level the four-match Test series.

With this, Rahul became the third opener in the history of cricket to hit a fifty-plus knock in both the innings of a Test match. Other two that feature in the list are West Indies’ Gordon Greenidge (1974) and India’s Ajay Jadeja (1995).

Conversely, Australian opener David Warner continued struggling with his form. Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin chipped in, making him his bunny as he dismissed him for record eighth time.

Warner has faced Ashwin in 12 Tests and losing his wicket to him eight times was his highest to have fallen to any bowler.

However, it wasn’t just India that dominated throughout the Test. Australia also had a grip over the match for a while. In the first innings, India’s middle-order batsmen Ajinkya Rahane, Karun Nair, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravichandran Ashwin lost their wicket in a span of 8 balls, the quickest dismissal trail in Test cricket.

Ranchi Test: Pujara surpasses Dravid’s record

The turf of Ranchi that hosted a Test for the first time, saw Cheteshwar Pujara troubling the mighty Australians as much as legendary batsmen Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman used to do.

Pujara slammed his second double-ton against Australia, joint-most among Indian batsmen with Tendulkar and Laxman and joint third-most overall in international cricket.

His 525-ball knock of 202 runs was the longest ever in the history of Indian Test cricket. Earlier, Dravid had faced maximum 495 balls in his innings of 270 runs in Rawalpindi in 2004.

Batting along with wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha, Pujara put a record 199-run partnership stand, highest ever for the seventh-wicket.

Dharamsala Test: Ashwin, Jadeja end well

Indian tweaker Ravindra Jadeja was bestowed with the Man of The Series award for claiming 25 wickets and scoring 127 runs, batting at lower-middle-order.

In the Dharamsala Test, the 28-year-old scored his sixth fifty-plus knock in the 2016-17 season, equal to captain Virat Kohli, Murali Vijay and KL Rahul.

Jadeja also became the third player to score 500-plus runs and claim fifty-plus wickets in a Test season. Earlier, Kapil Dev and Mitchell Johnson had achieved the same feat in 1979-80 and 2008-09 season respectively.

However, Pujara was the one who excelled the most in the season as he scored 1316 at an average of 62.66, second most by any batsmen. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting leads the chart with 1483 runs at an average of 78.05, with eight centuries.

In the bowlers’ chart, Ravichandran Ashwin stole all the limelight claiming record 79 wickets in the 2016-17 season, the most by any bowler in a season.

The 30-year-old spinner went past South Africa’s Dale Steyn, who took 78 wickets in 2007-08 season.

Lawmakers back measures to protect Israel by punishing Iran

AP | Washington |

Aiming to prove their commitment to Israel, senior US lawmakers are backing bipartisan legislation that would slap Iran with new sanctions while maintaining rigorous enforcement of the landmark nuclear deal.

The measures, unveiled at the opening of the annual American Israel Public Affairs Committee conference, seek to build consensus among Republicans and Democrats who are so often bitterly at odds on domestic issues.

The AIPAC meeting continues on Tuesday with appearances by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

During Monday's session, House Speaker Paul Ryan declared the US commitment to Israel "sacrosanct."

But Ryan also derided the nuclear deal an "unmitigated disaster" that gives Iran "a patient pathway to a nuclear weapons capability."

In exchange for Tehran rolling back its nuclear programme, the US and other world powers agreed to suspend wide-ranging oil, trade and financial sanctions that had choked the Iranian economy.

The House bill, which is co-sponsored by House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, targets Iran's "illicit" ballistic missile development programme.

The measure would shut out of the international financial system Iranian and foreign companies involved in the missile programme along with the banks that back them.

The Senate legislation imposes mandatory sanctions on people involved in Iran's ballistic missile program and anyone who does business with them. The measure also would apply terrorism sanctions to the country's Revolutionary Guards and enforce an arms embargo.
