BSE to keep 22 companies under enhanced surveillance

PTI | Mumbai |

BSE will bring 22 companies under enhanced surveillance measures and move seven of them into the restricted trading category.

As per two separate circulars issued on Monday, while the exchange will shift seven firms to Stage 1 of the Graded Surveillance Measure (GSM), it will transfer 15 to Stage 2.

Among the seven firms to be shifted to Stage 1 of the GSM are Jagson Airlines, JD Orgochem, Kachchh Minerals, Skyline Ventures India and SVC Superchem.

A total of 15 firms, including Colinz Laboratories, Dhruv Estates, Rama Petrochemicals, Shree Precoated Steels, Sparc Systems and Transglobe Foods, would be shifted to Stage 2 of the enhanced surveillance.

The measures on these firms would be effective from April 18.

In Stage 1, the scrip is moved to the "trade for trade" segment with the permitted price band of 5 per cent or lower as applicable.

In Stage 2, there would also be a requirement for Additional Surveillance Deposit (ASD) of 100 per cent of trade value charged to the buyer.

The BSE has asked members to take "adequate precaution" while trading in the shares of these firms, as the settlement would be done on trade-to-trade basis and no netting off would be allowed.

Mobile wallets’ real power lie beyond payments: Research

IANS | Beijing |

Mobile e-wallets are slowly being morphed into rich customer engagement platforms, thus offering reach and the opportunity for marketers to borrow mobile moments to better serve their customers, a Forrester research said on Tuesday.

Alipay and WeChat in China show marketers the future of mobile wallets.

While mainstream Western mobile wallets primarily focus on payments, pioneer mobile wallets in China have taken aggressive steps and become powerful customer engagement tools with innovative features such as WeChat's social gifting and Alipay's augmented reality (AR) coupons and red packets.

"Emerging mobile wallets will develop features like Alipay and WeChat. We expect mobile wallet innovations to happen more quickly in emerging markets with less legacy and competition. Paytm in India is a good example," senior analyst Xiaofeng Wang said in a blog post.

The successful marketing use cases developed on Alipay and WeChat Wallet will inspire third-party players like Apple and PayPal to morph their mobile wallets into more powerful customer engagement platforms, Wang added.

The marketers need to smartly leverage the mobile ecosystem to borrow mobile moments from the popular apps that their customers already use every day, the analyst suggested.

Twitter adds two-factor authentication app support

IANS | New York |

Twitter quietly released support for third-party two-factor authentication applications enabling the twitterati to now use these apps to protect their accounts, a media report said.

A Twitter developer said that this feature had been live since "late last year or early this year", tech website Android Police reported on Monday.

This feature allows Twitter users to use third-party apps, such as Google Authenticator or LastPass Authenticator, to protect their accounts.

To turn this feature on, users can go to the Settings menu on Twitter's website, then go to Account, and look for "Login verification" under the Security menu.

Twitter already has its own two-factor authentication feature, and new users will need to activate this system before being allowed to set up a third-party authenticator app.

Once Twitter's system is activated, users can click the button reading "Setup a code generator app" to activate the third-party app of their choice.

In January this year, computer scientists have found massive collections of fake accounts on the micro-blogging site and suggested that one person or a group is managing these accounts.

According to a BBC report, the largest network that was found have tied together more than 350,000 accounts and further work suggested that others might be even bigger.

The networks were uncovered accidentally when some researchers were probing Twitter to see how people use it.

Some of the accounts were used to fake follower numbers, send spam and boost interest in trending topics.

As of the third quarter of 2016, the micro-blogging service averaged at 317 million monthly active users.

John Legend, Chrissy Teigen have normal arguments

IANS | Los Angeles |

Singer John Legend says he and his wife and supermodel Chrissy Teigen have arguments like any other couple.

Legend, who has one-year-old daughter Luna with Teigen, says they fight about punctuality and overuse of electronic devices, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

"Chrissy and I bicker about the normal things like, 'When will you be home from work?' I also look at my phone too much… Twitter, Instagram, texting. She occasionally tells me off for that," Teigen told Cosmopolitan magazine.

However, he stated that one area that doesn't spark arguments between them is when they are cooking.

"Chrissy and I cook to relax. I'm very good at making fried chicken, macaroni cheese, omelettes and pancakes… Then we just hang out and watch TV. Netflix and chill, as they say," he said.

Glacier shape can predict melting risk

IANS | Washington |

Analysing how glaciers are shaped can help scientists identify which one of them are susceptible to thinning, says a study.

Just how prone a glacier is to thinning depends on its thickness and surface slope, features that are influenced by the landscape under the glacier, said the study published in the journal Nature Geoscience.

The research could help predict how much the Greenland Ice Sheet will contribute to future sea level rise in the next century, a number that currently ranges from inches to feet.

The Greenland Ice Sheet is the second largest ice sheet on Earth and has been losing mass for decades, a trend scientists have linked to a warming climate.

However, the mass change experienced by individual coastal glaciers, which flow out from the ice sheet into the ocean, is highly variable. This makes predicting the impact on future sea-level rise difficult.

"We were looking for a way to explain why this variability exists, and we found a way to do it that has never been applied before on this scale," said lead author Denis Felikson, a graduate research assistant at The University of Texas Institute for Geophysics (UTIG) in the US.

Of the 16 glaciers researchers investigated in West Greenland, the study found four that are the most susceptible to thinning: Rink Isbrae, Umiamako Isbrae, Jakobshavn Isbrae and Sermeq Silardleq.

Three of them – Umiamako Isbrae, Sermeq Silardleq and Jakobshavn Isbrae – are already losing mass, with Jakobshavn being responsible for more than 81 per cent of West Greenland's total mass loss over the past 30 years.

Rink has remained stable since 1985, but through shape analysis researchers found that it could start to thin if its terminus, the front of the glacier exposed to ocean water, becomes unstable. This is a strong possibility as the climate continues to warm.

"Not long ago we didn't even know how much ice Greenland was losing, now we're getting down to the critical details that control its behaviour," Tom Wagner, director of NASA's cryosphere programme, which sponsored the research, said.

The analysis works by calculating how far inland thinning that starts at the terminus of each glacier is likely to extend.

Glaciers with thinning that reaches far inland are the most susceptible to ice mass loss, the study said.

James Arthur hasn’t read his autobiography

IANS | London |

Singer James Arthur has revealed that he has not read his first autobiography, which was released shortly after he won The X Factor in 2012.

The 29-year-old earlier said that he is planning to release a self-help inspired autobiography, but he says he has not read his first book, James Arthur, My Story: The Official X Factor Winner's Book, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

"I haven't even read that. I wouldn't want it in my Christmas stocking," Arthur told The Sun newspaper when asked about his first book.

The Say you won't let go singer revealed last month that he is planning to write a tell-all autobiography that he hopes will act as a self-help book for others.

"I want to help people to get to know my story, and really tell them in detail what I've been through. The album says a little bit about it but it doesn't really tell the full extent," he said.

"I want it to act as a self-help book. I want to talk to people about how I felt a little bit different from a young age and felt a little bit weird and a little bit like an outcast, and the journey that I've been on to get to this place," he added.

H-1B visa to be reviewd as Trump set to sign new order

IANS | Washington |

US President Donald Trump will sign an executive order on Tuesday directing federal agencies to implement the "Buy American, Hire American" policy which calls for a review of the H-1B visa programme for skilled workers, senior officials said.

Trump will sign the executive order during a trip Tuesday to Kenosha, Wisconsin, where he will tour the headquarters of Snap-on-Tools, a high-end tools manufacturer, and deliver a speech about US manufacturing, CNN reported.

The officials on Monday touted the executive order as a "historic step" that would help protect American manufacturers and American workers whom the administration believes have been hurt by lax enforcement of "Buy American" laws and employers abusing the H1-B visa programme.

"Both 'buy American' and 'hire American' rules have been enormously diluted over time, resulting in many lost job opportunities for American workers," an administration official told CNN.

"This is what America wants," said a second official.

On the "hire American" front, the executive order will direct federal agencies to more strictly enforce H1-B visa laws and propose reforms to the programme to prevent fraud and abuse and ensure visas are awarded to the most-skilled applicants.

The H1-B visa programme is intended to bring skilled workers in certain fields to the US, but the administration contended that employers have abused it to hire workers who will accept cheaper pay than Americans.

The trip to Wisconsin will be Trump's first since becoming President.

Trump clinched victory in the state that has not voted for a Republican for president since 1984.

North Korea will regularly test missiles: Official

IANS | Pyongyang |

North Korea will continue to test missiles on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis, Vice Foreign Minister Han Song-ryol has said.

He said that an "all-out war" would result if the US took military action, BBC reported.

"If the US is planning a military attack against us, we will react with a nuclear pre-emptive strike by our own style and method," Han told BBC.

Earlier, US Vice President Mike Pence warned North Korea not to test the US, adding his country's "era of strategic patience" with Pyongyang was over.

"Just in the past two weeks, the world witnessed the strength and resolve of our new President in actions taken in Syria and Afghanistan," Pence said.

"North Korea would do well not to test his resolve or the strength of the armed forces of the United States in this region."

Pence arrived in Seoul on Sunday hours after North Korea carried out a failed missile launch.

Tensions have been escalating on the peninsula, with heated rhetoric from both North Korea and the US.

North Korea has accelerated its nuclear and missile tests in recent years, despite international condemnation and UN sanctions.

Its aim is to be able to put a nuclear warhead on an intercontinental ballistic missile that can reach targets around the world, including the US.

US President Donald Trump has said that will not happen, and stepped up pressure on the isolated North.

He has sent a navy strike group towards the Korean Peninsula, and the US and South Korea are moving ahead with the early deployment of a controversial missile defence system.

Despite the tension, North Korea may carry out a sixth nuclear test soon, observers say. It test-fired a missile on Sunday that exploded within seconds of launch, following a grand military parade on Saturday.

Han told the BBC that North Korea believed its nuclear weapons "protect" it from the threat of US military action.

The North casts the US as the aggressor.

At a news conference at the UN on Monday, North Korea's permanent representative Ambassador Kim In-ryong, condemned the US missile strikes in Syria, which targeted an air base after a suspected chemical attack by the government.

He said the US was "disturbing global peace and stability and insisting on the gangster-like logic that its invasion of a sovereign state is decisive and just and proportionate and contributes to defending the international order".

China has reiterated its call for North Korea to stop all tests, and has also called for a peaceful solution.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang told reporters in Beijing on Monday that the Korean peninsula was "highly sensitive, complicated and high risk" and that all sides should "avoid taking provocative actions that pour oil on the fire".

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow would not tolerate "missile adventures by Pyongyang" but a unilateral use of power by the US would be "a very risky course".

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Monday told a parliamentary session that diplomatic efforts were "important to maintain peace", but "dialogue for the sake of having dialogue is meaningless".

He added that Japan needed to apply pressure on Pyongyang to "seriously respond to a dialogue" with the international community.

Telangana to help Tripura in improving Ease of Doing Business index

IANS | Agartala |

The Telangana government will train Tripura government officials to improve its ranking in the Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) index, official said here on Tuesday.

"A group of officials from Telangana government's Industries Department would soon arrive here to teach the officials of Tripura Industries and Commerce Department and other industry related department," an official of Tripura Industries and Commerce Department said.

She said that after the Telangana government's officials' visit to Tripura, a group of officials likely to go to Telangana for on the spot knowledge on EoDB functioning in the southern state.

The EoDB index is a ranking system established by the World Bank Group. In the EoDB index, 'higher rankings' (a lower numerical value) indicate better, usually simpler, policy and regulations for businesses and stronger protections of property rights besides single window approval mechanism.

Telangana ranked first in the country in EoDB this year.

In the recent assessment done by the union Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Telangana government scored 98.78 per cent. The Centre in a recent meeting with all states requested Telangana to train Tripura officials in improving the state's rank.

"States that got top ranks have been asked by the central government to help states that secured poor ranks this year. Tripura has been allotted to Telangana. Industrial officials of Tripura government would visit Hyderabad," the Tripura official added.

She said that Tripura ranked first in EoDB among the eight northeastern states including Sikkim and secured 22nd position among Indian states and union territories.

ED summons Himachal CM to appear on April 20

IANS | New Delhi |

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh in a money laundering case. He must appear before it on April 20, an official told IANS on Tuesday.

Earlier the ED had summoned him on April 13. But he failed to appear before it.

The senior Congress leader had allegedly avoided earlier summons to get his statement recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

He is said to have excused himself by referring to his official commitments.

The ED has already questioned his wife Pratibha Singh and son Vikramaditya Singh in the case.

In the first week of April, the Enforcement Directorate attached Virbhadra Singh's Delhi farmhouse worth Rs 27.29 crore.

The agency's move came after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a chargesheet against Virbhadra Singh and others in March for allegedly amassing assets worth Rs 6.03 crore.

The ED had filed a criminal case under the PMLA against Virbhadra Singh, his wife Pratibha, Life Insurance Corporation agent Anand Chauhan, his associate Chunni Lal, and others in 2015 following the CBI's FIR dated September 23, that year.

The case was registered after a preliminary inquiry found that Singh as Union Minister from 2009 to 2012 allegedly accumulated assets worth Rs 6.03 crore, which were disproportionate to his known sources of income.

After his Delhi farmhouse was attached, the Chief Minister accused the Centre of harassing him and destabilising his government.

He alleged that central agencies like the ED and CBI were being misused against political opponents by the Centre.

Lena Dunham explains ‘Girls’ finale

Actress Lena Dunham, who played the role of Hannah in Girls, says her character became a mother in the end of the TV series as they didnt want to have a "traditional romantic partnership".

The final episode of Girls was aired on April 16 night. The show began with Hannah being bratty with her parents and it ended with Hannah becoming a parent herself to a boy named Grover.

"There was always some sense that for Hannah, finality didn't have to do with a traditional romantic partnership, but it did have to do with some kind of partnership," Dunham told people.com.

"And the most selfless partnership you take on is when you have a child — that's something that seemed like it would be a really interesting thing to see a notoriously selfish person try their hand at," she added.

Lightman’s allegations against Mani Ratnam unfair: Raman

IANS | Chennai |

The Lightmen Union on Tuesday slammed one of their own, Manimaran, for his allegation of noncompensation of medical expenses by veteran filmmamker Mani Ratnam as unfair.

Manimaran has threatened to go on a hunger strike if not compensated for medical expenses incurred while working on Mani Ratnam's 2007 film Guru.

The lightman had suffered a blood-related infection on the sets of Guru, and claims neither the Lightmen Association nor Ratnam's team had compensated him for the treatment in the past one decade.

"His allegations against us and Mani Ratnam are unfair. He sued us in Labour Court and the Union was ordered to pay him Rs one lakh which has already been settled," Lightmen Union Secretary Raman said.

"This issue was settled amicably long back. We even have a letter of acknowledgement from him," he added.

Manimaran has even threatened to commit suicide in front of Ratnam's house if not compensated.

"He is trying to exploit the situation and earn sympathy. When the issue has already been settled, I don't understand why he is creating a scene now," Raman said.

Sources from Ratnam's production house Madras Talkies were, however, unavailable for comment.

With an effort to enhance the bilateral ties, US National Security Adviser (NSA) HR McMaster on Tuesday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. McMaster also held talks with his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar.

Apart from this, he is expected to meet External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj later in the day.

Delhi Metro to run on cheap green power

Gaurav Chandra | Bhopal |

In the next couple of years, Delhi, considered among the most polluted cities, is expected to get green power from Madhya Pradesh to run its Metro trains. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) would start getting not only green but cheap electricity at almost half the current rate.

This becomes possible as a result of the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), signed in Bhopal on Monday between the DMRC and parties concerned to buy green energy from the upcoming 750-MW Rewa Ultra Mega Solar (RUMS) project in Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh.

According to officials, the project is possibly the largest ultra-mega solar power project in the world. It would have three phases with the first phase being completed already with the remaining two phases to be completed in the next 18 months.

As per official reports, the cost of the project covering an area over 1,500 hectares at Bandwar region in Gudh tehsil of Rewa district would be around `4500 crore.

Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal, Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu, MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan and other dignitaries were present during the signing of the PPA at a function held at Hotel Marriot in Bhopal.

Naidu said he was delighted that the DMRC, which comes under his ministry, will get green energy for around `3.30 (levelised tariff) per unit from RUMS. The current rate is `6 per unit.

Piyush Goyal said that India’s solar power generation capacity has galloped to 12,200 MW and hoped that it will climb to one lakh MW by year 2022.

MP CM Chouhan said that clean and green energy was a priority of the state adding that his government is promoting sustainable development keeping in mind the environment. “We don’t want our future generations to face hardship due to pollution,” he added.

According to MP’s New and Renewable Energy Department (NRED) Principal Secretary Manu Shrivastava, the RUMS project is a joint venture of Solar Energy Corporation of India and MP Urja Vikas Nigam (MPUVN), wherein both parties have 50 per cent stake.

At present, the world’s largest solar power project – Ivanpah Solar Power Facility of 392 MW, is at Mojave deserts in California, US.
