Cape Verde’s fairytale FIFA World Cup debut reached another remarkable chapter on Friday as the African nation booked a place in the knockout stage with a resilient 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia, setting up a blockbuster Round of 32 meeting with defending champions Argentina.

The point was enough for the Blue Sharks to finish second in Group H with three points, edging past two-time champions Uruguay and 2034 World Cup hosts Saudi Arabia by a single point to complete an unbeaten group-stage campaign.

Next up awaits the ultimate test, Lionel Messi’s Argentina in Miami on July 3, in what will undoubtedly be the biggest match in Cape Verde’s football history.

Cape Verde looked the more adventurous side for much of the contest and came closest to breaking the deadlock. Willy Semedo twice threatened in the opening half, first forcing Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais into a sharp save before narrowly missing the target with another effort.

Saudi Arabia’s afternoon took a worrying turn midway through the first half when defender Hassan Al Tambakti suddenly collapsed without any contact. After receiving lengthy medical treatment, he was stretchered off the pitch.

Cape Verde continued to push forward after the break, with a fierce long-range strike sailing inches wide before Laros Duarte was denied by another outstanding save from Al Owais with 15 minutes remaining.

Despite failing to find the breakthrough, the final whistle sparked emotional celebrations as Cape Verde’s players and staff embraced, knowing the draw had secured one of the greatest moments in the nation’s sporting history.

The Blue Sharks have now become only the third African nation to progress beyond the group stage without losing a match in their first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance, turning what began as a dream debut into one of the tournament’s most inspiring stories.
