PTI | Bhopal |

The Madhya Pradesh government has directed all educational institutions in the state to hold Surya Namaskar and Pranayam sessions on January 12, to mark the birth anniversary of spiritual leader Swami Vivekananda.

However, it also made it clear that participation in the Surya Namaskar or sun salutations would not be mandatory.

“Surya Namaskar and Pranayam will be performed in all academic institutions from 9 am tomorrow,” a government press release said on Thursday.

A state-level Surya Namaskar program will be organised at the Lal Parade ground here in the presence of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and his cabinet colleagues Vijay Shah and Deepak Joshi.

Students from schools in Bhopal would participate in the program, the release said.

Following the controversies associated with such events on earlier occasions, the state government clarified that the participation would be voluntary.

Santosh 51st overall after stage 5 at Dakar Rally

Santosh decided to play it safe and steady as the rally neared the halfway mark to finish the stage at 52nd position

PTI | Arequipa (Peru) |

Indian driver C S Santosh, racing for Hero MotoSports Team, gained five positions to be 51st overall after the fifth stage of the Dakar Rally, which will now move into Bolivia.

Santosh decided to play it safe and steady as the rally neared the halfway mark to finish the stage at 52nd position.

“It was a really hard day. I was feeling a bit tired in the morning as I didn’t have a good sleep, so it took me a little time to get going in the stage. The stage was tough, especially the last 50km or so,” Santosh said.

“The dunes were really churned up and the sand was incredibly soft. It took everything that I had and the machine had to make it through today. One more day to go before the much deserved rest day,” he added.

Dakar debutant Oriol Mena, also competing for Hero MotoSports Team, finished 11th, his second top-15 stage finish. Overall, Mena now stands at the 21st position at the end of stage 5.

In the 5th stage, the organisers separated the route for the Quads/Bikes and Cars/Trucks. The trucks and the cars, therefore, were the first to discover the stage, even before their riders, as they made their way through the sands of Tanaka, traversing through 30km or so of mountain dunes.

The next stage will see the rally change countries to enter into Bolivia making its first halt at La Paz – the world’s highest capital city.

The rally will move a gear up to become faster as it leaves the sands behind to tackle the Bolivian Altiplano at the altitude of 2500m and above.

Pakistani celebs condemn rape, killing of minor girl

IANS | Islamabad |

Pakistani actors Mahira Khan and Ali Zafar condemned the rape and killing of an eight-year-old girl, who was found dumped in trash after being repeatedly assaulted sexually. The movie stars say “sexual abuse needs to spoken about openly”.

“This. We need to start talking about sexual abuse openly. We need to include that in our school curriculums. Awareness is key. Associating abuse and rape with shame is why countless go unheard. Stop with the shame,” Mahira tweeted on Thursday morning.

Riots erupted in Pakistan’s Punjab province on Wednesday over police inaction after the minor’s body was found.

The victim was last known to have attended a tuition centre near her house in the Road Kot area last Thursday on January 4, after which she went missing, Dawn reported.

Demanding justice for the victim, the actress added: “We fail as a nation every time we witness a crime as heinous as this. We fail even more when we aren’t able to bring these evil butchers to the gallows. And we fail the most when we sit in our homes instead of getting out on the roads. Press Club, Karachi. 2 p.m.”

Ali said he was disgusted with the heinous crime and wants justice for the minor girl.

“Never been so angry and disgusted in my life. Her parents had gone for Umrah (pilgrimage) when this happened. Imagined their state of mind. Justice has to be served! Justice for (the girl),” he tweeted.

The brutal murder of the little girl has incited anger among residents as it is the 12th such case to occur within a two kilometre radius in the city since last year.

Kasur, over 400 km from Islamabad, made international headlines in 2015 when a gang of paedophiles were running a child sex racket that was busted, Dawn reported.

The paedophile gang allegedly abducted and sexually assaulted at least 280 children in the area, blackmailed the families of the victims since 2009, and even sold video clips and images of the assault.

Guitarist and songwriter Salman Ahmad shared on his popular Pakistani band Junoon’s Facebook page, that Kasur is the city of his father and ancestors.

“It is also the burial place of one of the greatest Sufi saints, Baba Bulleh Shah… Bulleh would be turning in his grave to learn of the monsters that prowl Punjab and hunt young children …

“Is there no law or justice left in Pakistan to reign in these satanic forces? Shame on the police and Punjab government for turning a blind eye or being complicit in the sex trade flourishing in Kasur and elsewhere in the country.

“A sexual assault which involves children should be dealt with ruthless punishment. If we don’t set an example with across the board accountability, right now, these monsters will continue their lustful orgies entrapping children… and extinguishing their light.”

Sena asks RSS, BJP “bhakts” to clear stand on nationalism

PTI | Mumbai |

Taking a swipe at its ally BJP over the Supreme Court’s ruling that playing the national anthem in cinema halls was optional, the Shiv Sena on Thursday urged “bhakts” and the RSS to clarify their stand on nationalism.

An editorial in Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ sarcastically described the SC ruling as “historic or revolutionary”, and said the ruling came after the BJP-led Union government took a position that playing the anthem in halls was “not important”.

“The Supreme Court did a U-turn on its own decision after the Centre took a stand that (playing) the national anthem in theatres was not important… What are the stand of the RSS and other nationalist organisations on this,” it asked.

“It (the apex court’s decision) is a jolt to those who took the stand in the Modi regime that those who sing ‘Vande Mataram’ are nationalists and those who do not are traitors,” the newspaper said.

Calling the government’s position on the anthem cowardly, it said the definition of nationalism was changing every day.

Till recently, it was asserted that those who protected cows were nationalists and those ate beef were traitors, but the chief minister of BJP-ruled Goa yesterday said there was no ban on beef in the state, it pointed out.

While it has become mandatory to display Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s photographs in Madrassas in Uttar Pradesh, there are no norms for the national anthem now, it said.

“It is as if those who died at the gallows for freedom chanting ‘Vande Mataram’ were stupid. What does the BJP bhakts (supporters) have to say about this,” it asked.

2017 was a great year, say publishers

PTI | New Delhi |

For publishers in India, 2017 was a great year an amazing range of books, new imprints, rewards and recognitions and prized acquisitions.

The year saw numerous autobiographies and biographies, and books related to business, commercial and mass market fiction, besides literary fiction, sports, self help, chik-lit and culinary works. There were a number of works by new and little-known authors too.

Penguin celebrated its 30th anniversary in India and HarperCollins India its 25th year. Bloomsbury India marked five years of its launch and the quarterly The Equator Line magazine completed five years.

“We had a great year at HarperCollins. It was our 25th anniversary year and was really special. We celebrated the occasion with newly designed special editions of our 25 most iconic titles, launched an imprint for business books Harper Business,” says HarperCollins India CEO Ananth Padmanabhan.

“We also launched a brand new children’s publishing program in November and a range of educational toys called FLAP (Fun a Learning and Play), the first by any publisher in India,” he told PTI.

“We also won many awards; the best business book for Y V Reddy’s ‘Advice and Dissent’, one of the first books in the new list, Anuk Ardupragasam’s ‘The Story of A Brief Marriage’ won both the Shakti Bhatt Prize and the DSC South Asia Prize.

Our books were on every shortlist in 2017. In short it has been a spectacular and rewarding year of books and awards,” he adds.

“At Palimpsest, we look back on 2017 with satisfaction particularly for three books we put on our list: Sophie Judah’s ‘Victory Tea Estate’, Balraj Khanna’s iconic Partition narrative ‘Line of Blood’, and ‘Demonetization in the Detail’, a collection of essays edited by veteran journalist H K Dua,” says Bhaskar Roy, CEO of Palimpsest Publishers.

Hemali Sodhi, senior vice president (marketing) and publisher (children s) at Penguin Random House India, terms 2017 as an extraordinary year.

“We celebrated Penguin’s 30th anniversary in India. To mark the occasion, we published special collector’s editions across both the adult and children’s divisions. Beautifully designed, the 30 books in the adult list and 10 books in the children’s list featured some of our most beloved and popular titles published over the last 30 years. We also celebrated the 30th anniversary through the year with some very innovative and fun initiatives and campaigns,” she says.

“It was also a wonderful year for our local publishing program – our range of books and authors consistently won awards, garnered acclaim and hit the bestseller charts. We were awarded the publisher of the year at the Tata Literature Live, and also won all the industry awards for book production,” she adds.

According to Bloomsbury Publishing India Vice President (Sales & Marketing) Yogesh Sharma, 2017 was the best since Bloomsbury was launched five years ago in India.

“Our local publishing expanded significantly on the back of critically acclaimed books such as ‘The Epic City: The World on the Streets of Calcutta’ by Kushanava Choudhury, The Windfall’ by Diksha Basu, ‘Who Me, Poor?: How India’s Youth are Living in Urban Poverty to Make it Big’ by Gayatri Jayaraman, and ‘Purveyors of Destiny: A Cultural Biography of the Indian Railways’ by Arup K Chatterjee, among others,” he says.

“Both our trade and academic businesses including the digital collections grew as we strengthened our presence in sales and marketing. We grew by a record 32 per cent outstripping the industry average by far,” Sharma says.

According to Oxford University Press-India Managing Director Sivaramakrishnan V, the focus of OUP in 2017 was achieving learning outcomes, technology adopted quickly and content rewritten and redesigned to adapt to a variety of emerging media.

“Virtual and Augmented Reality was probably the most talked about trend of 2017. AR/VR technologies help learners experience and interact with digital learning objects to support their learning. Educators, who earlier had print or digital images/animations for teaching support, now can leverage these high-fidelity educational experiences to achieve better learning outcomes,” he says.

Among the highlights of Pan Macmillan India’s publishing list in 2017 were the 10th anniversary edition of Ramachandra Guha’s “India After Gandhi”; “Awaken”, the first book of Ashok Banker’s Shakti trilogy; “The Demon of Cawnpore” by Jules Verne; “The Party Worker” by Omar Shahid Hamid; Chhimi Tenduf-La’s “Loyal Stalkers”; “Mrs C Remembers” by Himanjali Sankar; and “Boy of Fire and Earth” by Sami Shah

Conferred with D Litt degree, Mamata says intolerance rising in India, history being distorted

SNS | New Delhi |

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said “intolerance” was “rising” in the country while there was an attempt to distort history.

Speaking at the University of Calcutta after being decorated with a higher doctorate degree (D. Litt) during its convocation ceremony, Banerjee said: “Intolerance is rising in the country. History should not be distorted.”

“India has diversity of origin and we should respect that,” she added.

Meanwhile, a public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in the Calcutta High Court challenging the University’s move to confer the honourary doctorate on Banerjee.

The PIL, filed by Abu Taleb and Ranjugopal Mukherjee, argues that the varsity is a state-funded institution and will suffer a “credibility loss” if it confers the degree upon the highest executive authority of the state.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national secretary Rahul Sinha also took a dig at the Calcutta University authorities for “stooping” to an unimaginable low.

Spain’s Barreda wins Dakar 5th stage

Barreda on Wednesday finished the route between San Juan de Marcona and Arequipa

IANS | Arequipa (Peru) |

Spaniard Joan Barreda (Honda) won the fifth stage of the Dakar Rally to vault up to fourth overall in the motorbike category.

France’s Adrien Van Beveren (Yamaha) retained the overall lead despite finishing fifth in the stage, but saw his advantage over Argentina’s Kevin Benavides (Honda) reduced to just one minute.

Walkner is third in the general.

Chilean rider Pablo Quintanilla (Husqvarna) trailed Barreda by more than 28 minutes on Wednesday and tumbled to ninth place overall.

Though hampered by a nagging wrist injury, the Spaniard was aggressive from the start, determined to gain ground after a crash forced defending champion Sam Sunderland to abandon the race on Tuesday.

While competitors put the rigors of the Peruvian desert behind them with the end of Wednesday’s stage, they will now have to contend with the challenge of high altitude in Bolivia.

PTI | Melbourne |

Spain’s Rafael Nadal has been top seeded at the Australian Open, above Swiss great Roger Federer at two, followed by Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov, Germany’s Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem of Austria.

Serbia’s Djokovic, who is making a comeback after a six month lay-off due to a tennis elbow injury, is ranked at 14. He is chasing a seventh Australian Open title and started off well with a reassuring 6-1, 6-4 win at the Kooyong Classic on January 10.

At the 14th rank, Djokovic may run into a tough opponent early on but the win against Thiem has set him up as a potential finalist.

Despite the tournament suffering due to withdrawals by Andy Murray and Kei Nishikori, the return to fitness of Djokovic and hopefully Nadal too opens up the tournament.

In women’s rankings, Romanian Simona Halep tops the chart followed by Danish player Caroline Wozniacki, Spanish-Venezuelan Garbine Muguruza, Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina and America’s Venus Williams.

Muguruza is injured and is not sure if she will take the field.

Arrest us if we are terrorists, BJP dares Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah

SNS | New Delhi |

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday dared Siddaramaiah to arrest its cadre after the Karnataka Chief Minister said that members of the BJP and RSS were “Hindu terrorists”.

Addressing the media, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said: “If we are extremists and terrorists, why aren’t you arresting us.”

The BJP leader further said that Siddaramaiah’s statement has exposed Congress chief Rahul Gandhi’s visits to temples.

“The statement of Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah has reiterated Congress’s policy of appeasement and its hatred towards Hindus. The CM has attacked Hindus and Rahul Gandhi’s temple runs stand exposed,” he said.

Earlier in the day, the Karnataka CM said that members of the BJP and RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) were “Hindutva terrorists.”

The statement comes a day after Siddaramaiah said the BJP, RSS and Bajrang Dal were harbouring extremists.

On Wednesday, BJP chief Amit Shah hit back at the CM and accused him of being anti-Hindu and indulging in vote-bank politics.

Assembly elections in Karnataka are likely to be held in May and the BJP is going all guns blazing to oust the Congress from the state and has set itself a target of 150 seats.

The party is planning to launch a two-front attack on the incumbent Congress with Shah along with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath consolidating Hindu votes while Modi, with a blitzkrieg of rallies later, will woo the urban voters.

The Congress and the BJP had won 122 and 40 seats respectively in the last assembly polls.
