Musical tribute to Swami Vivekananda

Kunal Roy | New Delhi |

On the occasion of the 156th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, the Sangeet Natak Akademi in collaboration with the Ramakrishna Mission, Delhi organised a musical event to pay tribute to the saint.

The cultural mélange also commemorated 125 years of the historic address which Swami Vivekananda had delivered at the Parliament of World Religions in Chicago in 1893. “Vivekananda spoke so much on India and its problems.

He was the one who directed everyone’s conscience towards India’s fall and also told how an individual can uplift moral and cultural values in a society and work for the betterment of our motherland,”said Swami Shantatmananda, secretary, Ramakrishna Mission, Delhi.

At the musical evening renowned musicians paid homage to the saint with beautiful renditions of Hindustani classical music. Shruti Sadholkar Katkar left the audience mesmerised with her performance of Hindustani vocals. Later, the Gundecha Brothers took the audience on a delightful journey of music as they performed Dhrupad, a genre of Hindustani classical music which Swami Vivekananda himself had mastered.

The evening, which was specially dedicated to celebrate Vivekananda’s life, ended with melodic notes from veteran flautist Ronu Majumdar. Speaking to The Statesman, Swami Shantatmananda stressed on taking forward Swamiji’s work and messages and said special attention must be paid to organising programmes, talks and seminars so that the current generation doesn’t remain ignorant of the country’s cultural legacy.

Talking about Vivekananda’s importance and relevance in current times, he added,” Swamiji didn’t talk only on Puja and meditation but he talked extensively about cultural and moral decline in human beings. Our youth should take inspiration from Swamiji’s talk on national regeneration and patriotism.

The youth today wants to move to a foreign land to earn name and money. Swamiji wanted to sow a seed of patriotism in everyone’s heart and we must take forward his ideas and work.”

Chidambaram slams ED for raids at son Karti’s premises

SNS | New Delhi |

As the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday conducted searches at multiple premises linked to Karti Chidambaram, his father and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram slammed the agency and said that it had no jurisdiction to carry out the raids.

“They (ED officials) searched and found nothing but since they had to justify themselves they took papers of a statement made by government in Parliament, few years back,” said Chidambaram reacting to the raids that were carried out in connection with a money laundering probe in the Aircel- Maxis case.

“The ED has no jurisdiction to investigate under PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act),” he added.

The Congress leader further said that there was no FIR concerning a scheduled crime by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or any agency.

The ED conducted raids in Delhi and Chennai since early morning after similar searches on the premises of a relative of Karti on December 1, 2017.

The ED case pertains to the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval granted in 2006 by the then finance minister P Chidambaram.

The agency had said it is investigating the circumstances of the said FIPB approval granted by the then finance minister (P Chidambaram)”.

The ED also alleged that Karti has “disposed” of a property in Gurgaon, which he had allegedly rented out to a multinational company “to whom foreign direct investment (FDI) approval had been granted in 2013”.

It charged that Karti had “also closed certain bank accounts and attempted to close other bank accounts in order to frustrate the process of attachment” under the PMLA.

The agency said FIPB approval in the Aircel-Maxis FDI case was granted in March, 2006 by the then FM even though he was competent to accord approval on project proposals only up to Rs 600 crore and beyond that it required the approval of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA).

India vs South Africa, 2nd Test: Here is what Virat Kohli said after losing the toss

South Africa leads the three-match Test series 1-0.

SNS |

South Africa have won the toss and have opted to bat against India in the second Test at the SuperSport Park, Centurion, on Saturday.

Virat Kohli’s side will aim to bounce back after their defeat in the opening Test against South Africa.

While talking about the second Test, Indian skipper strongly believes that experience of Newlands will help visitors put up a better batting show in the second Test.

“One must not get surprised by the bounce here. There are other pitches that bounce around the world as well. But here bounce can be steep and it can be quite steep from length. Those are things you have to mentally tune yourself to get over and accept that this is going to be the major part of batting in South Africa.”

The South African skipper Faf du Plessis is expecting a strong response from the ICC table toppers.

“I expect another huge performance from them. They are a remarkably strong team and for us, it’s making sure that we don’t take a step back and rely on a 1-0 lead. If you do that against a strong team like India, they’ll pounce on us.”

While talking about the toss and second Test, Virat said, “It is a no-brainer. We would’ve wanted to bat first as well. The pitch looks very different and dry from what it looked a couple of days ago, all the grass has been taken off. We were looking for a similar wicket to Cape Town and the way we got back into the game gave us a lot of heart. It is more of a situation that’s tricky out here, hopefully the bowlers will step up. The first hour will be difficult for the batsmen and we are looking to exploit the conditions. Saha has a hammy niggle and we do not want to take a chance with him. KL Rahul comes in for Dhawan and Ishant replaces Bhuvi to get some extra bounce.”

Talking about the pitch and Lungi Ngidi debut, Faf said, “We are going to bat first again. It is usually very slow on day one and it takes to spin later on. The previous toss was touch and go but all the stats are in favour of the team batting first out here. The cracks could open up over the next few days and it could get difficult. It is still a big fight, two quality teams trying hard to win a Test match and we expect the same from India. There are a few things in the first Test we think we can improve upon. Lungi Ngidi is making his debut on his homeground. He’s an exciting youngster and has a lot of pace and bounce. And that is the only change.”

South Africa leads the three-match Test series 1-0.

India (Playing XI): Murali Vijay, Lokesh Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli(c), Rohit Sharma, Parthiv Patel(w), Hardik Pandya, Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma

India vs South Africa, 2nd Test: Faf du Plessis takes dig at Virat Kohli

Indian skipper Virat Kohli has often been compared to legendary cricketers because of his form and batting style.

SNS |

Be it Sachin Tendulkar or cricket great Don Bradman, Indian skipper Virat Kohli has often been compared to legendary cricketers because of his form and batting style.

However, South African skipper Faf du Plessis beg to differ. Recently when du Plessis was asked whether Virat Kohli was on a par with AB de Villiers or better in the longest format of the game, he said with a wink: “Anyone who gets judged on being the best in the world, whether it is a bowler, batsman or team, I feel should get judged all around the world.”

While talking about their star batter AB de Villiers, Faf said, de Villiers is very desperate and hungry to do well. Without  a doubt de Villiers is proven performer on all sort type of ground. When Africa is in a tricky condition, he is expected to bailed them out and that’s exactly what he did in Cape Town.

“His job is to score big runs and make an impact with the bat. I know he is very hungry to do well, and a hungry AB usually means a big run-scoring AB. So, hopefully over the next few months, we will get a lot of runs from him,” said du Plessis.

Teams:

South Africa squad: Dean Elgar, Aiden Markram, Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis(c), Quinton de Kock(w), Vernon Philander, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Morne Morkel, Chris Morris, Temba Bavuma, Theunis de Bruyn, Andile Phehlukwayo, Duanne Olivier, Lungisani Ngidi

Trump ‘got the message’ over UK visit: London Mayor

IANS | London |

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has said that US President Donald Trump had “got the message” from Londoners after cancelling his visit to the city.

Trump had claimed he had scrapped the visit because he did not want to open the new US embassy in the British capital, but Khan on Friday suggested the real reason was because he would not be welcome, CNN reported.

President Trump got the message from the many Londoners, Khan said. He said his countrymen love and admire America and Americans but find Trump’s policies polar opposite to the city’s values, Khan said in a statement released on Twitter on Friday.

“Many Londoners have made it clear that Donald Trump is not welcome here while he is pursuing such a divisive agenda. It seems he’s finally got that message. This reinforces what a mistake it was for Theresa May to rush and extend an invitation of a state visit in the first place.”

The Mayor said Trump’s visit would “without doubt have been met with mass peaceful protests”.

Large demonstrations are expected to accompany any visit to the British capital by Trump, who is deeply unpopular here, said CNN.

A petition to stop Trump from making an official state visit to Britain garnered over 1.8 million signatures in 2017, in a backlash over his controversial travel ban.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson fired back at Khan on Twitter, saying on Friday that he would “not allow US-UK relations to be endangered” by the London Mayor, whom he referred to as a “pompous puffed up popinjay in City Hall”.

A UK official said on Friday that the invitation to Trump for a state visit, first extended by May during her visit to the US early in Trump’s presidency, still stands, the CNN report said.

“The invitation for a state visit has been extended and accepted,” the official said.

The official drew a distinction between the state visit, which would include a visit with Queen Elizabeth II and royal trappings like a horse parade.

While a working visit, would include a meeting with May and other diplomatic formalities like opening the embassy.

After Trump declared his disapproval with London’s new US embassy as the reason for cancelling his visit to the city, Madame Tussauds placed a waxwork of the President outside the building, CNN reported.

The owner of the house, Sanjeev Garg and his wife were in Agra in Uttar Pradesh when the blaze occurred.

Initially there was confusion over the cause of the fire in Sector 9 of Vidhyadhar Nagar that killed family members, including Garg’s father Mahendra Garg, 75, – an iron trader and his grandchildren Arpita, 23, Saumya, 20, and Animesh, 17, a police officer said.

However, preliminary investigation by FSL officials point at the possibility of a short circuit.

The bodies were sent for postmortem to Kanwatiya Hospital.

In another incident, a fire broke out in the basement area of a building in Civil Lines of Jaipur on Saturday morning. Police said the building’s basement housed a plywood godown.

The building was immediately evacuated.

Police in Chile probe series of church attacks ahead of Pope’s visit

IANS | Santiago |

Chilean authorities are investigating a series of attacks and threatening incidents at churches in the Santiago metro area ahead of Pope Francis’ three-day visit.

Members of the national police force’s Police Special Operations Group (GOPE) were deployed to the municipality of Estacion Central after a bomb was found on Friday inside the Jesus Maestro church, the latest of five incidents, Efe news reported.

Although that home-made device did not detonate, the targeting of five churches in a short span has sparked concern among authorities three days before the pontiff’s arrival.

Carabineros said a barrel of flammable liquid and pamphlets denouncing the Pope’s visit, which is scheduled for January 15-18, also were found at the latest crime scene.

Three bombs exploded early on Friday in Catholic churches in the municipalities of Recoleta, Peñalolen and Estacion Central, while a fourth was found outside a church in the capital.

“Pope Francis, the next bombs will be in your cassock,” a pamphlet found in one of the churches read.

Prosecutors suspect the so-called Lautaro Youth Movement, which allegedly carried out similar attacks on political offices in November and December, in the lead-up to the December 17 presidential runoff, also is behind these latest incidents.

In an interview with Oasis radio, President Michelle Bachelet described the attacks as “very strange,” while the Archdiocese of Santiago said they “run counter to the spirit of peace inspired by the pope’s visit.”

President-elect Sebastian Piñera also condemned the attacks on Twitter as driven by “hatred and intolerance” and urged Chileans to receive Pope Francis with joy and in peace.

Separately, members of the “Andha Chile” movement of mortgage debtors protested at the Apostolic Nunciature, where the pontiff will stay while in Santiago.

The pope, who was born in neighbouring Argentina, also will make stops in the northern Chilean city of Iquique and the southern city of Temuco during his visit.

Indian Navy looking at more P-8I ‘submarine killers’: Admiral Sunil Lanba

IANS | New Delhi |

The Indian Navy is considering the acquisition of more Boeing P-8I aircraft for surveillance and Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), according to Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba.

In an interview to the magazine ‘India Strategic’, Admiral Lanba said that air surveillance capability is an important subset of naval operations and that while the proposal was on the table, he could not disclose the required numbers.

His predecessors have spoken of a requirement of 30 Long-Range Maritime Reconnaissance (LRMR) aircraft, under which the navy has already inducted eight aircraft and placed an order for four more.

Because of the overall tardy process of routine modernisation of the armed forces over the last 30 years, the Indian Navy has not been able to renew its inventory of submarines but the acquisition of the P-8I (I stands for India) has given it a very strong offensive capability to detect and hunt hostile submarines.

In fact, in terms of contemporary weapon technologies, the P-8I, often referred to as the “submarine killer”, is perhaps the most advanced system that any of the three Indian services have acquired in recent years. The aircraft was deployed in 2013 by the Indian Navy around the same time the US Navy did.

The Defence Ministry has officially stated that the P-8I is “capable of thrusting a punitive response and maintaining a watch over India’s immediate and extended areas of interest”.

Asked about the growing number of hostile submarines in the Indian Ocean, nearer home in fact, Admiral Lanba said: “As a professional military force, we constantly evaluate the maritime security environment in our areas of interest. We lay a lot of stress on Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA). Accordingly, we are fully seized of the presence and likely intentions of all extra-regional forces operating in the Indian Ocean. Our Navy is fully capable and ever ready to meet any challenges that may arise in the maritime domain.”

Significantly, the agreement for the P-8Is was signed on January 1, 2009, within a couple of months of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks which exposed the vulnerability of the country’s maritime defences. The attack, in fact, triggered the government to clear quite a few proposals for the armed forces as well as to review what should be done to ensure security of Indian waters, particularly the coastal belts on the country’s eastern and western seaboards.

The Navy is now the nodal agency for coordinating surveillance through satellites and aircraft and a network of police and small boats has also been integrated into the system.

The Navy and the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) also operate a number of HAL-made Dornier 228 aircraft, while some proposals for more LRMR and Medium-Range Maritime Reconnaissance (MRMR) have been on the table for the last few years.

Observed Admiral Lanba: “Every endeavour is being made to collectively ensure that our maritime security, of which coastal security is an important subset, is adequately strengthened.”

“A number of measures have been taken since 26/11 to strengthen maritime, coastal and offshore security by the concerned agencies in the country. These measures broadly include increasing capacity and capabilities of maritime security forces, enhanced surveillance and domain awareness of the maritime zones, increased regulation of maritime activities, streamlining intelligence-sharing between different agencies and strengthening overall maritime governance. There have been significant improvements in the operational response to developing situations at and from the seas,” he added.

At the national level, coordination of coastal security-related activities is being carried out by the National Committee for Strengthening Coastal and Maritime Security (NCSCMS).

The Navy had ordered eight P-8I aircraft in 2009 for $2.1 billion along with a training package. Weapons and torpedoes were extra as needed, and then, under the Options Clause, four more aircraft were ordered in August 2016.

The standard delivery schedule begins within three years of signing a contract and making the first payment. Boeing has said that it delivered the first lot of eight aircraft “on time, on cost” and helped set up their base at the INS Rajali Naval Air Station at Arakkonam in Tamil Nadu.

Boeing had been awarded a three-year contract in June last year for engineering and logistics support for the P-8I fleet. In January 2018, the Navy has been given approximately Rs 2,000 crore (almost $315 million) for a Training Solution along with a 10-year package for comprehensive maintenance service.

The training facility at INS Rajali will be the third of its kind after those in the US and Australia, and will train pilots, observers and ordnance and technical personnel. Spread over 60,000 sq ft, the facility would be completed by 2021.

A Training Simulator to be set up at the Naval Institute of Aeronautical Technology (NIAT), Kochi, for ab-initio training of the technical personnel is part of the package.

Pratyush Kumar, Boeing’s India President and Vice President International, had observed after signing the three-year contract last year: “Our team remains focused on executing our commitments to customers on schedule and cost. With this contract, the Indian Navy can be assured of achieving exceptional operational capability and readiness of the P-8I fleet.”

Boeing’s earlier contract was due to expire in October 2017.

The Indian variant has certain Indian components, including communication software and IFF (Identify Friend or Foe), to align with Indian naval and Air Force aircraft and net-centric systems.

It has 360-degree radar view, thanks to Raytheon’s AN/APY-40 forward looking radar’s 240-degree coverage and the rest from Telefonics aft-looking radar.

Built on the Boeing 737 frame, the P8-I is capable of detecting and destroying hostile submarines deep under the water. It has 11 hard points for carrying Harpoon anti-shipping missiles and depth charges, and five stations in the weapons bay for Raytheon-supplied Mk-54 torpedoes. Two hard points upfront are for Search and Rescue equipment.

There are five operator stations, and windows for outside views. All the systems are integrated with the onboard Mission Computer and Display System for control and data distribution in high speeds with ultra-high resolution. The APY 10 radar is developed keeping in mind not just the land but waters of the vast oceans as well, be it day or night. It is capable of tracking even small vessels in littoral and high seas environments.

The Indian variant also has the Magnetic Anomaly Detector (MAD) which measures minute variations and disturbances in the earth’s magnetic field caused by the underwater movement of steel-encased submarines.

India has already acquired a number of Harpoon Block II missiles for use both by the Navy and IAF, which also conducts maritime patrols.

Ind vs SA, 2nd Test: Must not get surprised by the bounce in South Africa, says Kohli

The Delhi batsmen also slammed the critics regarding their view on the selection of Ajinkya Rahane.

IANS |

Indian skipper Virat Kohli on Friday said the batsmen must not get surprised by the challenges offered by the bouncy wickets during the South African tour.

Kohli also said that reading bounce will be the key factor during the Proteas tour.

“We must not get surprised by the bounce here. We have to maintain composure when you get sudden change of bounce, which you experience in South Africa, Kohli told reporters here.

“Here the bounce can be steep from length also. You need to mentally tune yourself to these things and accept that it is going to be a major part of batting in South Africa,” he added.

The Delhi batsmen also slammed the critics regarding their view on the selection of Ajinkya Rahane.

Before the start of the first Test in Cape Town, cricket experts were asking about Ajinkya Rahane’s exclusion from the playing XI. But after India lost the first game, now many of those wanted Rahane in the playing eleven.

“It’s funny how things change in a matter of weeks, or just about five days. Before the first Test no one thought that he should be in the eleven and now suddenly people are looking at the other option,” Kohli said.

Praising the Mumbai batsman, Kohli said: “”He (Rahane) is a quality player. He has done well in South Africa, in all conditions actually away from home. He is probably been our most consistent and solid player away from home.”

The skipper also hinted that the team might witness a few changes from the first Test.

“As far as the opening combination goes, we will decide today at the end of practice what is it that we are going to go within this game. We might do something different also but there is definitely no need to panic,” he said.

Commenting on the pitch, Kohli said: “It looks likely a really lively pitch. It is exactly what we expected it to be and we actually wanted it to be that way so that both teams are into the contest provided they play some good cricket. This pitch will again test us to play our best cricket and that is something that we are looking forward to do.”

Get in comfy: Be easy yet trendy

Deepa Gupta | New Delhi |

Hurrah! From going a day out with friends to collapsing onto the couch without feeling the need to change into something more comfortable is the hymn of the season. The good news is that palazzos have come a long way in recent years not only with a lot of options in designs and styles, you can even wear them to a party enjoying the cosiness of stylish pyjamas. Make the most out of this magical outfit.

In the ongoing golden age of comfy dressing, palazzos are a secure/stylish girl’s fashion paradise. Go through your wardrobe, pull out the uncomfortable churidaars and other body fit lowers troubling you. Bag them up and stuff somewhere in an unused closet or wherever. You’re just getting them out of your sight so you can focus on the comfortable palazzos you actually want to wear. All that other stuff is just taking up the space.

The flowing lowers come in an array of neutral colour palettes to go well together with all other hues in your wardrobe. These colours make this outfit breezier and you look damn cute any time. Allow yourself some signature colours also to liven up your neutrals when the mood strikes you. You’ll like mixing things up from time to time. Pull it on and off within two seconds, so why are you not going to want to wear it. With these great loose flowing pants and their stretchy fabric, you never have to be stuck to the stuff that’s just seems to be torturous and occupying space in your cupboard. If you’re going to shop new palazzos, stick to a couple of branded stores and don’t even bother looking anywhere else. Pick four to five places that work best for you. If you don’t find something specific that you want, be cool and move on.

No doubt, it is one of the world’s simplest and most comfortable dresses. It’s appropriate for most work environments. With a sleek look and tailored without actually being restrictive, these comfy lowers look great even if your weight is up or down a few pounds. They’re easy to dress up with jewellery and accessories when you feel like it. Of course! You can wear them pretty much year-round with kurtis, crop tops, long tops and even one piece dresses. Buy multiple and look chic every day.

Wearing high heels with palazzos is a fashionista’s choice. However, flats, sneakers and low chunky heels look totally modish under them. Day or night, work or weekend, you don’t need to wear a skin tight lower to look fabulous and you don’t need them sitting in your wardrobe mocking you either. There is nothing wrong with both matching as well as contrast. Both make you look perfect with minimal effort. If you find your outfit boring with plain or simple print, add beads, buttons, sequins, embroidery or graphics. These embellishments also go with everything. If you like sparkle, go for shiny material in poly silk or shantoon type.

Thanks to the style as no belts are required. Good belts are expensive and bad ones may ruin the look of your outfit. If you want to emphasize your waist in palazzos, just wear a cropped top over your favourite one flowing loose. Lacy crop tops that show off your arms, chest, shoulders or back look sexier with sophistication. These day, spending on body hugging lowers is more like paying a fortune for something you’re wearing occasionally or leaving sitting in a closet piling for many months. Now the search for a comfortable lower that can be worn anywhere, anytime is over. Palazzos are totally acceptable. You’ll love the look in no time. They’re the latest funky or party or office style. Snag few in sophisticated fabrics, prints, work and colours. Polish your looks with smart accessories like a top handle bag, a cross body bag or loafers.

If you have not tried them yet, say hello to your soon-to-be-favourite wide leg pants. Pick those which are incredibly beautiful and delightfully comfortable.

It’s true: Palazzos are trending!
