Sri Lanka name pacer Lakmal as Test vice captain

Right-arm seam bowler Lahiru Gamage has been picked as well.

IANS |

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Saturday named paceman Suranga Lakmal as the Test vice captain, while announcing the squad for the brief two-Test tour to Bangladesh, starting January 31.

After ending 2017 on a below-par note, which saw the Islanders being outplayed by India both at home and away, the Islanders under new coach Chandika Hathurusingha, have already made a few changes, including re-appointing Dinesh Chandimal as the leader of the Test team.

The Test squad also sees the return of batsmen Kusal Mendis and Danushka Gunathilaka while there is an added emphasis on pace, with Dushmantha Chameera and 20-year-old Lahiru Kumara being picked.

But it is the first-time selection of unorthodox offspinner Akila Dananjaya that is the strongest indication that the selectors and new coach are looking at taking Sri Lanka’s attack in a new direction.

Lakmal has been rewarded for a good 2017 with the team’s vice-captaincy while Rangana Herath and Dilruwan Perera head up the spin department, with left-arm wristspinner Lakshan Sandakan also included.

Right-arm seam bowler Lahiru Gamage has been picked as well.

There are notable omissions as well with pacemen Nuwan Pradeep, Vishwa Fernando and all-rounder Dasun Shanaka, being left out.

Among the batsmen to be dropped are Lahiru Thirimanne and Sadeera Samarawickrama along with all-rounder Asela Gunaratne, and Kusal Perera — both of whom are, however, in the ODI squad.

Sri Lanka Test squad: Dinesh Chandimal (Captain), Dimuth Karunaratne, Angelo Mathews, Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva, Niroshan Dickwella (WK), Roshen Silva, Rangana Herath, Suranga Lakmal (Vice Captain), Dilruwan Perera, Dushmantha Chameera, Lakshan Sandakan, Akila Dananjaya, Lahiru Gamage, Lahiru Kumara.

SpaceX Dragon cargo spacecraft to return today with key NASA cargo

IANS |

Carrying approximately 4,100 pounds of NASA cargo, science and technology demonstration samples from the International Space Station (ISS), SpaceX’s Dragon cargo spacecraft was set to splash down in the Pacific Ocean on Saturday.

Spacex’s Dragon is the only space station resupply spacecraft currently able to return cargo to Earth.

The spacecraft lifted off from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on December 15, carrying about 4,800 pounds of supplies and scientific cargo. It arrived on the ISS on December 17.

A variety of technological and biological studies are returning in Dragon, NASA said. This includes hardware from the “Made in Space Fiber Optics” payload, which demonstrated manufacturing fiber optic filaments in a microgravity environment.

Designed by the company “Made in Space” and sponsored by the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS), the investigation pulled fiber optic wire from ZBLAN – a heavy metal fluoride glass commonly used to make fiber optic glass.

Research indicates that ZBLAN fiber pulled in microgravity may not crystalise as much, giving it better optical qualities than the silica used in most fiber optic wire. Results from this investigation could lead to the production of higher-quality fiber optic products both in space and on Earth. Mice from NASA’s Rodent Research-6 study also will return live to Earth for additional study.

The investigation, which was conducted jointly with the US National Lab, evaluated a new drug delivery device for administering continuous low doses, which could help counteract muscle wasting and prevent the need for daily or frequent drug administration.

A tiny capsule, implanted under the skin, delivers a constant, low dose of a drug via a silicone membrane, with channels as narrow as 1/50,000 the width of a human hair.

The drug, called formoterol, is a common therapy in asthma inhalers and for other lung diseases that relaxes muscles responsible for tightening a patient’s airways.

The low-dose delivery also could help avoid the known side effects of taking high doses long-term, NASA said.

The controversy and drama queen of this season has been none other than television bahu Hina Khan. Her journey in Bigg Boss has been quite similar to the daily soaps and we are not even surprised. From supporting Zubair Khan after he misbehaved with the ladies on the show to insulting Arshi Khan for her clothes and making comments on her contemporaries, she did it all. And the self titled ‘Miss right’ is still going on in the show, isn’t that a clue? Maybe, her outspoken nature is what her fans like. She has always been honest and vocal about her opinion. In fact, Hina has excelled in all the tasks that she has performed and is a tough competitor for the house mates. She seems to have a very loyal group of fans who will keep on supporting her the till the end. This might end up making her the winner of the show.

Shilpa Shinde has already been declared as Salman’s favorite on the show. All the contestants think that he is baised towards her and it cannot go unnoticed. If we refer to the previous shows, we can see that the ‘favorites’ of Salman have never won the show. Interestingly, be it Elli Abram, Sana Khan or Tannisha none of them won the show after reaching the finale. Since, the show likes to be unpredictable we think it will not make someone the winner who is the first one who comes to your mind. The fact that Shlipa too has a very faithful fan following can’t be ignored. Even after not being the best in the tasks she managed to reach the finale and this time, one of Salman’s dearest might win the show. What do you think?

Vikas Gupta

A producer, who might have been unknown to you, has now emerged as the star of the show this season. He is the strategist and mastermind in the show. The way he plans out every step he must have certainly made a blueprint to reach the trophy. Earlier, as he started on the show he was been bullied and called out names over the guesses of him being ‘gay.’ He is the participant who has proved himself as a player really well. After eviction, Arshi Khan also confessed that she wants Vikas to win, was she indicating to something? Former contestant Kishwer Merchant said that the show revolves around Vikas, maybe the finale will also be about him. But with Hina and Shilpa as competitor it will not be so easy for him.

Puneesh Sharma

Bigg Boss 11

Puneesh Sharma was mostly underestimated by housemates and with Priyank Sharma  and Luv Tyagi as competitors he never got much of the limelight. However, he took the first step right as his supposedly love affair with Bandagi Kalra made him popular on the show. To everyone’s surprise, he continued on the show after Bandagi’s elimination. And he is still going strong with the support of commoners and following the footsteps of last commoner and winner Manveer Gujjar, he might actually win the show. Do you think this can happen or will they make a celebrity contestant a winner since a commoner won the last season?

Well, there have been a lot of speculations, just weigh the points and take the clues from them to predict the winner. You might actually find out it before the show declares it on January 14. Good luck with that.

ED arrests ex-Andhra Bank official in Rs 5,000 cr fraud case

IANS | New Delhi |

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested a former Director of Andhra Bank in its ongoing money laundering probe in the alleged Rs 5,000 crore bank fraud case involving Gujarat-based pharmaceutical company Sterling Biotech, an official said on Saturday.

Anup Prakash Garg was arrested after day-long questioning on Friday under charges of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the official said.

Both the ED and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had named Garg in their criminal cases as an accused. The ED initiated a money laundering probe in the case taking cognisance of CBI FIR in the case.

The ED said it found during probe that “certain entries” in a diary seized by the Income Tax Department in 2011 showed various cash payments amounting to Rs 1.52 crore made to one “Garg, Director, Andhra Bank” between 2008-2009 by the Sandesara brothers.

“Various cash payments were made to Garg, as reflected in the said entries, on the instructions of Sandesara brothers, by withdrawing cash from the bank accounts of several benami companies of the Sandesara brothers,” it said.

The financial probe agency alleged Garg of infusing several crores of rupees of his unaccounted cash in various companies through many Kolkata-based bogus shell companies with the help of cash or cheque entry operators in Kolkata to launder the proceeds of crime obtained by him from the Sandesaras.

In November last year, the ED arrested a Delhi-based businessman Gagan Dhawan in connection with the case.

The CBI had booked Sterling Biotech, its directors Chetan Jayantilal Sandesara, Dipti Chetan Sandesara, Rajbhushan Omprakash Dixit, Nitin Jayantilal Sandesara and Vilas Joshi, chartered accountant Hemant Hathi, Garg and some unidentified persons in connection with the alleged bank fraud case.

Sterling Biotech had taken loans of over Rs 5,000 crore from a consortium of banks led by Andhra Bank which had turned into non-performing assets. A total pending dues of the group companies were Rs 5,383 crore as on December 31, 2016, alleged the CBI FIR.

Rahul Dravid’s India team faces Australia in U-19 World Cup opener

India are three-time champions, the last triumph coming in 2014.

PTI |

Optimism mingled with an eagerness to know what lies ahead as India’s potential future stars geared up to lock horns with Australia in their big- ticket campaign opener of the ICC U-19 World Cup here tomorrow.

Coached by the distinguished Rahul Dravid, there is no dearth of talent in the sqaud, and the former India captain’s sprightly boys would have got acclimatised to the conditions by now having arrived many days prior to the start of the tournament.

India are three-time champions, the last triumph coming in 2014.

While Dravid, who has been at the helm of U-19 and India A squad for some time, may not like to focus on individuals, it is very difficult to not see the likes of skipper Prithvi Shaw as the a vital cog in the team’s batting wheel.

Alongside Shaw, who has created ripples with his exploits in the domestic circuit for Mumbai, there is Himanshu Rana, who has also amased plenty of runs in Youth ODIs.

Punjab’s Shubhman Gill at number three is one of the most exciting young batsmen going around, and with a few impressive first-class games this Ranji Trophy season, he will have gained in confidence.

The top-order’s performance is likely to be crucial to India’s chances in the tournament. The middle-order is likely to be manned by Anukul Roy and Abhishek Sharma, and they would certainly want to make heir presence felt.

Another exciting name doing the rounds is Bengal pacer Ishan Porel. With Mohammed Shami rarely turning up for his state team owing to national commitments, Porel has caught the eye in the limited opportunities that came his way.

Porel is set to spearhead the pace attack and he could be complemented by Shivam Mavi, who will be aided by the seaming conditions in this part of the world.

Acted in interest of judiciary, justice: SC judge Kurian Joesph

PTI | Kochi |

Justice Kurian Joseph, one of the four senior Supreme Court judges who virtually revolted against the country’s chief justice over “selective” case allocation and certain judicial orders, on Saturday expressed confidence that the the issues raised by them would be resolved.

Joseph said that they acted solely in the interest of judiciary and justice, a day after he and the three other judges took the unprecedented step of addressing a press conference.

He rejected suggestions that they had violated discipline and expressed the hope that their actions will bring in more transparency in the administration of the Supreme Court.

“Stood up for justice and judiciary…. That is what we said there (in New Delhi) on Friday. Nothing beyond that,” Justice Joseph said in Malayalam when local television news channels approached him at his ancestral home in Kalady near here seeking his reaction on Friday’s development.

“An issue has come to attention. It will certainly be solved since it has come to the attention,” he told reporters.

Justice Joseph said the judges had acted only to “enhance the trust of the people in judiciary.”

The four senior most judges of the Supreme Court — justices J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, M B Lokur and Kurian Joseph — had on Friday called a press conference in New Delhi and said the situation in the top court was “not in order” and many “less than desirable” things have taken place.

Unless this institution is preserved, “democracy will not survive in this country,” they had said.

Justice Chelameswar, the second senior judge after the Chief Justice of India, had said “sometimes administration of the Supreme Court is not in order and many things which are less than desirable have happened in the last few months”.

Chelameswar said they had met CJI Dipak Misra on Friday morning and “raised issues affecting the institution”.

He also said that the four judges had written a letter to CJI Dipak Misra some time back, raising important issues.

West Bengal school includes Saraswati Puja in holiday list following outrage

SNS | New Delhi |

A school in West Bengal, which had initially not declared Saraswati Puja in its holiday and celebration notification, was forced to include the same following public outrage.

Uttar Dinajpur Jila Prathmik Vidyalaya Sansad, in a circular dated January 10, listed five events for the month of January to be either observed as holidays or celebrated in the school. Out of them, New Year’s Day on January 1 and the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda on January 12 were marked as holidays, whereas the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, which falls on January 23, and Republic Day were marked as events to be celebrated in the school.

The school had also mentioned Makar Sankranti, which falls on January 14, in the notification but had neither marked it as holiday nor as an event to be celebrated. It should be noted that January 14 is a Sunday.

Soon after the notification was issued, some Twitter users uploaded a copy of it on the social media platform. As the list went viral, many enraged users wrote their displeasure about the absence of Saraswati Puja. They questioned the administration on why an important Hindu festival of West Bengal was left out. Some of them also accused the school administration of playing communal politics.

To calm the flared tempers the school administration issued a new notification on January 11 mentioning Saraswati Puja as a holiday. The religious event falls on January 22. The notification was signed by the school’s chairman Mohammad Zahid Alam Arzu and secretary Aminul Ahsan.

Both the chairman and the secretary could not be reached for comments.

The incident brought back memories of Tehatta High School in Uluberia. In January 2017, a riotous mob had ransacked the school and prevented it from celebrating Saraswati Puja because the administration had earlier refused to mark Milad ul-Nabi.

Tensions had then forced the school-in-charge Utpal Mallik to resign from his post. Students of the school had blocked a national highway demanding that school should be allowed to celebrate Saraswati Puja. In response, the students were lathi-charged by the police. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was severely criticised for the police action as well as the increasing fundamentalism in the state.

Saraswati Puja is one of the most significant Hindu festivals celebrated in the state. Schools across West Bengal make preparations well in advance for the day. Students enthusiastically participate in the religious ceremony which revolves around the worship of Saraswati — the Hindu goddess of education. The day holds a special significance for young parents whose kids traditionally start their academic life in writing ceremonies conducted in temples and ornate pandals erected in schools.

5 legends of Lohri you may want to know

SNS | New Delhi |

Lohri is one of the most popular festivals celebrated among Punjabis in India. The festival of Lohri has many renowned legends associated with it and the legend of Dulla Bhatti is considered the most significant of them.

Lohri marks the end of winter on the last day of ‘Poush’ and beginning of ‘Magha’ which is exactly when the sun changes its course.

The legend of Sun God

A few days before Lohri, village maidens assemble and visit the households to ask for cow-dung cakes. The girls gather around the house and chant: ‘We’ve come, all the girls of the village! We’ve come to your courtyard!’, and so they go from house to house collecting cow-dung cakes till they have a veritable pile. They deposit all of them in one house and return to their homes. This ritual has a valid reason behind it that has been passed down by their forefathers.

As Lohri is celebrated on the last day of the month of ‘Poush’ to mark the end of winter, it is said that the forefathers formulated a sacred mantra which would protect them from the cold. This mantra was created to invoke the Sun God to send them so much heat that the winter cold would not affect them. And, in thanksgiving to the Sun God, they chanted this mantra round a fire on the last day of ‘Poush’. The Lohri fire is symbolic of the homage to the sun. A song is sung on this occasion:

“Where have the shawls and braziers gone?

To the golden mountain Where’s the golden mountain gone?

To the sun’s ray Where has the sun’s ray gone?

To the sun Where’s the sun gone?

To the fire The fire burns, the ray warms

The snows melt, the cold days have ended.”

Our ancients believed that the flames of the fires they lit took their message to the sun, and that is why on the morning after Lohri, which is the first of the new month Magh, the sun’s rays would suddenly turn warm and take the chill away from the people’s bones.

Another version of Lohri

In another version of Lohri’s legend and tales it is said that in olden times, human beings lit fires to keep away flesh-eating animals and protect their habitations. Everyone in the community would contribute to the fire for which young boys and girls would collect firewood from the jungle to burn.

That is the reason why even today people burn cow dung cakes and it is the teenager who go and collect them. The Lohri bonfire is considered as an old symbol of protecting oneself with the community and it is also considered as a form of fire worship. The Lohri fire is holy and it is to this fire that couples pray for more children and parents for husbands for their unmarried daughter.

The Legend of Dullah Bhatti

On the eve of Lohri the most popular songs sung by groups of boys and girls that invariably end with the exclamation ‘ho’:

Sunder mundriye ho!

Tera kaun vicharaa ho!

Dullah Bhatti walla ho!

Dullhe di dhee vyayae ho!

Ser shakkar payee ho!

Kudi da laal pathaka ho!

Kudi da saalu paata ho!

Salu kaun samete!

Chacha gali dese!

Chache choori kutti! zamidara lutti!

Zamindaar sudhaye!

Bum Bum bhole aaye!

Ek bhola reh gaya!

Sipahee far ke lai gaya!

Sipahee ne mari itt!

Bhaanvey ro te bhaanvey pitt!

Sanoo de de Lohri, te teri jeeve jodi!

(Laugh, cry or howl!)

Lohri is a festival that is associated with weddings and hence many Lohri songs are based on the stories of Dulla Bhatti. Dulla Bhatti is a tale of a man that used to steal from the rich and rescue girls sold off to the Mughals. He used to rescue the girls and provide for them, including a suitable man for their weddings.

The song exhorts the youth to protect the honour of their sisters, daughters and punish those who try to dishonour them. His songs of heroism and valour are sung and recite everywhere in Punjab.

The legend of the two sisters

According to another legend, Holika and Lohri were actually sisters. After an order given from Harnakash, Holika took Prahlad and Lohri to sit in the fire, while Holika perished in the Holi fire, her sister Lohri survived the trail with Prahlad.

The derivation of the name ‘Lohri’

Some people believe that Lohri has derived its name from Loi, who was the wife of Saint Kabir. There also another legend that suggests that Lohri comes from the word ‘loh’, which means the light and the warmness of fire.

Eating of ’til’ (sesame seeds) and ‘rorhi’ is considered to be essential on Lohri day which why perhaps the words ‘til’ and ‘rorhi’ merged to become ’tilorhi’, which eventually got shortened to Lohri.

The Badshah of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan enjoys a huge fan following and we are well aware of that. His superhit movie ‘Fan’ made us aware about the madness of his fans. The actor has a worldwide following and now a new name has been added to the list. It is none other than our childhood favorite wrestler John Cena.

If you follow him on the social media site Instagram, you must have come across the posts about Shah Rukh Khan. He has also posted pictures of famous sportsmen Kapil Dev and Rahul Dravid. The Shenshah of Bollywood Amitabh Bachchan has also been a part of it, but the wrestler seems to be obsessed with Shah Rukh Khan. He recently posted a picture of the actor with a quote on Instagram, “Learn to laugh at yourself, at every chance you get. If you manage to learn to not take yourself too seriously, no matter how big shot you become, you’ll instantly disarm life’s power to beat you down.”

Not just that, he also shared a video of Shah Rukh Khan’s TEDtalk and captioned it, “This was randomly put up in a small article by @theCHIVE very glad i stumbled across it.” The actor replied to it, again proving that he is actually funny, he wrote “thx for taking out time to ‘See’ it. We think it is flattering and John Cena cannot be blamed as Shah Rukh keeps inspiring people with his little speeches and motivational words. Shah Rukh keeps proving that he is undoubtedly the ‘King.’

China to establish barrier-free transport system by 2020

IANS | Beijing |

China is looking to establish a service system for barrier-free transport by 2020, according to the Ministry of Transport (MOT).

A guideline on improving transportation services for the elderly and the disabled was jointly released Thursday by the MOT, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the China Disabled Persons’ Federation and four other departments, Xinhua reported on Saturday.

By 2020, barrier-free facilities should be established at all newly-built and rebuilt railway stations, service centres along expressways, airport terminals and other transport facilities, for the disabled and the elderly.

Post offices should make sure that any mails for the elderly and the disabled are delivered to their specific addresses, while new buses in cities with over 5 million citizens should be low-floor vehicles, the guideline reads.

Moreover, the guideline asks local governments to provide support in the forms of land and funds for the construction of barrier-free infrastructure.

It also asks for policies that allow guide dogs to get on public transport, and braille signs on public transport facilities.
