Youth hiring in India to grow by 11 pc by 2026, to add nearly 1.28 crore new jobs: Report

Youth hiring in India is projected to grow by 11 per cent by 2026, generating approximately 1.28 crore new jobs, according to a report on Monday.

IANS | New Delhi |

Youth hiring in India is projected to grow by 11 per cent by 2026, generating approximately 1.28 crore new jobs, according to a report on Monday.

The report by NLB Services showed that IT services will account for around 30-40 per cent, manufacturing around 12 per cent, healthcare around 13 per cent, fintech around 20 per cent, logistics around 10.7 per cent, and green energy around 4 per cent of these roles.

“As we mark Youth Day on the lines of ‘Ignite the Self, Impact the World’, India stands at a pivotal inflection point where its demographic dividend can translate into sustained economic acceleration if matched with the right skilling investments,” said Sachin Alug, CEO, NLB Services.

“With over 65 per cent of India’s population below the age of 35 and an estimated 12 million youth set to enter the workforce by 2026, the urgency to build future-ready capabilities has never been higher,” he added.

The report noted that demand for high-impact roles such as AI/ML engineers, data scientists, cybersecurity specialists, cloud architects, digital product managers, and sustainability professionals is expected to outpace supply.

It also flagged a significant opportunity gap in AI-skilling programmes, even as workplaces increasingly prioritise AI fluency and advanced digital competencies.

Alug said that structured upskilling, skill-aligned recruitment, and outcome-based talent models will be central to ensuring India’s youth not only participate in, but actively power, the country’s next phase of economic transformation.

“The next phase of growth will be driven by skills across AI and machine learning, data science and analytics, cybersecurity, cloud and platform engineering, digital product management, automation, and green technology roles,” Alug said.

Currently, only 45 per cent of youth are considered job-ready for high-growth tech and digital roles.

“This gap presents a clear opportunity: targeted upskilling at scale could unlock productivity gains of around 21 per cent across knowledge-intensive sectors, with the potential to contribute up to 8 per cent to India’s GDP by 2026,” Alug noted.

The report suggested that inclusive participation remains an important factor in India’s workforce outcomes. Women currently account for 41.7 per cent of the formal workforce, and youth employability levels in tier-2 and tier-3 cities trail metro cities.

Further, expanding access to quality training infrastructure, increasing female workforce participation to 55 per cent by 2030, and integrating underrepresented groups could add an estimated 9.3 million skilled workers to the economy over the next 5 years, it said.

Iran protests: Donald Trump says Tehran reached out for talks; internet shutdown continues, 544 deaths reported

As protests intensify across Iran, Donald Trump says Tehran has sought talks, while warning that US action may come first amid rising deaths and unrest.

Statesman News Service | Mumbai |

US President Donald Trump has said Iran has approached Washington to discuss negotiations, even as the White House warns that events unfolding inside the country could force American action before any talks take place.

Speaking to reporters onboard Air Force One, Trump said Iranian leaders had contacted the US amid escalating protests across Iran, now in their third week. The unrest, driven by inflation, economic hardship and public anger, has turned violent in several regions.

“They do. They called. Iran called to negotiate yesterday. The leaders of Iran called. They want to negotiate. I think they’re tired of being beat up by the United States. Iran wants to negotiate,” Trump said.

He confirmed that a meeting was being planned but cautioned that Washington may not wait indefinitely.

“We may meet with them. I mean, it’s a meeting being set up, but we may have to act because of what’s happening before the meeting. But a meeting is being set up,” the US President added.

US issues warnings as Iran unrest deepens

Trump’s remarks came as protests intensified across Iran, with reports of clashes between demonstrators and security forces in multiple provinces. Human rights groups say hundreds have been killed since demonstrations began on December 28.

Asked about Iran’s warning that US military and commercial bases would be considered legitimate targets if Washington struck, Trump responded sharply.

“If they do that, we’ll consider things that they wouldn’t believe. We will hit them at levels that they’ve never been hit before,” he said.

When pressed on whether Tehran would take the threat seriously, Trump replied, “Wouldn’t you say that they probably do at this point, after going through it for years with me?… Soleimani, al-Baghdadi, the Iran nuclear threat wiped out… What a stupid question.”

The President also said his administration was discussing ways to restore internet access in Iran after authorities shut down services nationwide. He said conversations were ongoing, including the possibility of involving Elon Musk’s Starlink, though no decision had been taken.

“We are going to be talking about that. We may get the internet going. We may speak to Elon Musk; I am going to call him,” Trump said.

Deaths mount as internet blackout continues

Iran has been under a near-total internet shutdown since January 8, a move widely seen as an attempt to suppress information flow and coordination among protesters. According to Netblocks, the blackout crossed the 84-hour mark on Monday.

Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) said at least 544 people have been killed during the protests so far, with over 10,681 arrested and transferred to prisons. Demonstrations have been recorded at 585 locations across 186 cities in all 31 provinces.

Among the dead are protesters, security personnel, non-protesting civilians and children. HRANA said dozens of reported deaths are still under investigation, warning that verification has become increasingly difficult due to the internet shutdown.

Meanwhile, exiled Iranian Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi has publicly backed the demonstrators, calling the unrest a nationwide uprising against the Islamic Republic.

In a video message, he urged Iranians to continue protests and appealed to government employees and security forces to side with the public.

“I announce another stage of the national uprising to overthrow the Islamic Republic and reclaim our dear Iran,” he said, adding that embassies abroad belong to the people and should display Iran’s national flag.

US voices hint at military action

In Washington, senior US lawmakers have also issued stark warnings. Senator Lindsey Graham, speaking at a fundraising event, suggested military action against Iran could be imminent.

“I don’t know what, but this might be the night. It’s just a matter of time now,” Graham said, adding that the Iranian leadership “needs to go.”

Trump has separately said Iran appears to be crossing a “red line” over the killing of protesters, prompting Washington to consider what he described as “very strong options”.

“They’re starting to; it looks like,” Trump said when asked if the red line had been crossed.

“There seem to be some people killed that aren’t supposed to be killed… we’re looking at it very seriously. The military’s looking at it. We’re looking at some very strong options; we’ll make a determination,” he added.

According to reports cited by ANI, Trump has been briefed on a range of military options, though the administration has not disclosed what steps, if any, it may take next.

Jairam Ramesh Urges Union Budget 2026–27 to Address Real Economic Challenges Beyond Statistical Illusions

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Monday questioned the Union government’s economic strategy ahead of the Union Budget 2026–27 presentation, warning that the Budget must go beyond “statistical illusions” and confront the deep structural issues facing the economy.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Monday questioned the Union government’s economic strategy ahead of the Union Budget 2026–27 presentation, warning that the Budget must go beyond “statistical illusions” and confront the deep structural issues facing the economy.

Responding to the Parliament session schedule announcement, Ramesh noted the Budget’s timing—less than three weeks away—and its likely alignment with the 16th Finance Commission’s report submitted on November 17, 2025. Covering the period from 2026–27 to 2031–32, the report addresses tax revenue sharing between the Centre and the States, as well as its distribution.

Ramesh highlighted States’ concerns over fiscal federalism, particularly criticising the new 60:40 cost-sharing formula, which he said has undermined the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). “States, already anxious about the 60:40 formula that bulldozed MGNREGA, will be even more apprehensive,” he said.

He identified three pressing economic challenges that require urgent Budget attention: sluggish private corporate investment despite tax cuts and strong profits; a sharp decline in household savings, limiting investment capacity; and widening wealth, income, and consumption inequalities.

Ramesh cautioned that headline GDP growth figures mask these problems and stressed that large-scale job creation depends on addressing them. “Sustainable higher GDP growth essential for expanded employment will not be possible without immediate action,” he said.

He questioned whether the government would confront these realities with meaningful measures or remain in a comfort zone of selective data and optimistic projections.

‘Centre strangulating Kerala’s finances’: CM demands rightful share of funds at Satyagraha protest

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan today launched a new front of resistance in Thiruvananthapuram with a one-day Satyagraha protest against the Centre for strangulating the state financially through its anti-people policies.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan today launched a new front of resistance in Thiruvananthapuram with a one-day Satyagraha protest against the Centre. Vijayan accused the BJP-led central government of strangulating the state financially through its anti-people policies.

The Satyagraha protest organised by the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) aims to draw national attention to the Central government’s violation of the financial rights of Kerala. The agitation will be held till 5pm today at the Martyrs’ Memorial (Raktasakshi Mandapam) in Palayamm, Thiruvananthapuram. Several ministers, legislators, Members of Parliament, party leaders and other elected representatives are expected to take part in the protest.

CM accuses Centre of violating state’s fiscal rights

Addressing the LDF-led Satyagraha, Vijayan alleged that leaders at the Centre assume absolute authority and continue discrimination against Kerala. He accused the BJP of violating the state’s constitutional rights. He said, “What is happening to Kerala is something that should never occur in a democratic country. The Union rulers are arbitrarily and discriminatorily usurping our rights. These are constitutional rights, and it is to protect those rights that we are being forced to take to the streets.”

CM alleged that from January through March, the Union government cut the funds available for the state’s utilisation by more than half at the last minute. He said, “Kerala was entitled to ₹12,000 crore. It is not possible to move forward relying only on revenue income; borrowing is also essential, especially to meet end-of-year expenditures. Of the ₹12,000 crore borrowing limit, ₹5,900 crore has been denied without justification. This is not all. Under centrally sponsored schemes implemented in the country, including those in Kerala, the state first spends its own funds.”

Furthermore, the chief minister claimed that the Union government intended to weaken and undermine Kerala as a whole and dismantle its achievements across sectors. “These actions cannot be seen as targeting only the state government. They affect all sections of the people and amount to a policy that squeezes Kerala as a whole. What is happening is part of a deliberate and well-planned approach. Planning should be meant to lead a state towards progress, but the Union government is attempting to weaken and undermine Kerala,” he said.

Sundar ruled out of ODI series against New Zealand, Badoni named replacement

Sundar reported acute discomfort in his left lower rib area while bowling during the first ODI at the BCA Stadium on Sunday.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

India all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the remainder of the ODI series against New Zealand after sustaining a side strain during the series opener in Vadodara, the BCCI confirmed on Monday.

Sundar reported acute discomfort in his left lower rib area while bowling during the first ODI at the BCA Stadium on Sunday. He will undergo further scans, following which the BCCI medical team will seek expert opinion to determine the extent of the injury.

“India all-rounder Washington Sundar reported an acute onset of discomfort in his left lower rib area while bowling during the first ODI against New Zealand at the BCA Stadium, Vadodara, on Sunday. He will undergo further scans, following which the BCCI Medical Team will seek expert opinion. Washington has been ruled out of the remaining two matches of the ODI series.

“The men’s selection committee has named Ayush Badoni as his replacement. Badoni will link up with the squad in Rajkot, the venue for the second ODI,” the BCCI said in a statement.

This is the first time the 24-year-old Badoni has been called up to the national team. He has so far featured in 27 List A matches with 693 runs and 18 wickets to his name.

Sundar’s injury adds to India’s growing list of fitness concerns. Rishabh Pant was ruled out of the ODI series just days before the opener after suffering a side strain, with Dhruv Jurel drafted in as his replacement.

Tilak Varma, meanwhile, is recovering from groin surgery and will miss the first three T20Is of the five-match series against New Zealand beginning January 21 in Nagpur.

The setback is significant for India, particularly with the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup approaching. Sundar is currently part of India’s World Cup squad, but his availability for the upcoming T20I series remains uncertain. In the first ODI, Sundar bowled five overs and remained unbeaten on 7 during India’s chase before being forced off due to injury.

India’s updated squad for 2nd and 3rd ODIs: Shubman Gill (C), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul (WK), Shreyas Iyer (VC), Ravindra Jadeja, Mohd Siraj, Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna, Kuldeep Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Arshdeep Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Ayush Badoni

‘India to be invited next month to join Pax Silica initiative’: New US envoy Sergio Gor makes big announcement

According to the US State Department, the Pax Silica initiative seeks to reduce coercive dependencies, protect materials and capabilities foundational to artificial intelligence (AI), and ensure that aligned nations can develop and deploy transformative technologies at scale.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Sergio Gor made a big announcement on Monday (January 12) in his first remarks after taking charge as the new US Ambassador to India earlier today: India will be invited by the United States next month to join Pax Silica as a full member.

The US last month launched the Pax Silica strategic initiative to build a secure, prosperous, and innovation-driven silicon supply chain from critical minerals and energy inputs to advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, AI development, and logistics. According to the US State Department, the initiative seeks to reduce coercive dependencies, protect materials and capabilities foundational to artificial intelligence (AI), and ensure that aligned nations can develop and deploy transformative technologies at scale.

Several countries joined the US-led initiative at the launch last month, including Japan, South Korea, Singapore, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Australia.

India was a notable exclusion from the initiative and the opposition Congress party criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government over the development, calling it “a missed opportunity”.

However, the new US envoy to New Delhi announced today: “I want to share with you today a new initiative that the United States launched just last month called Pax Silica. Nations that joined last month include Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and Israel. Today, I am pleased to announce that India will be invited to join this group of nations as a full member next month.”

“As the world adopts new technology, it is essential that India and the United States work hand in hand from the very start of this initiative,” he added.

On India-US trade deal

Gor also commented on the ongoing talks between the two countries on a bilateral trade deal, which assumes significance in the face of high tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on India. The ambassador said the “next call” on the deal will happen tomorrow.

“Many of you have asked me for an update on the ongoing trade deal negotiations. Both sides continue to actively engage. In fact, the next call on trade will occur tomorrow,” Gr said, as per news agency ANI.

The envoy also explained why there has been a delay in concluding the negotiations.

“India is the world’s largest nation. So, it’s not an easy task to get this across the finish line, but we are determined to get there. While trade is very important for our relationship, we will continue to work closely together on other very important areas such as security, counter-terrorism, energy, technology, education, and health,” he said.

‘India an essential partner’

Gor further said that India is an “essential partner” for the US, adding that he will work to further the strategic relationship between the two countries.

“No partner is more essential than India. In the months and years ahead, it is my goal as ambassador to pursue a very ambitious agenda. We will do this as true strategic partners, each bringing strength, respect, and leadership to the table,” Gor said.

“It is great to be here as the United States’ Ambassador. I come to this remarkable nation with profound respect and a clear mission: to take the partnership between our two nations to the next level. This is the intersection between the world’s oldest democracy and the world’s largest democracy. During my last dinner with him, President Trump recounted his last visit to India and also his great friendship with the great Prime Minister of India. I hope the President will be visiting us soon, hopefully in the next year or two. President Trump has a habit of calling at 2 in the morning, and with the time difference in New Delhi, it might work out pretty well,” he stated in his initial remarks.

“I thank the people of India for a very warm welcome. You are a resilient people. You are innovative. You are spiritual. I look forward to meeting many of you as I travel across this incredible nation. To the staff here at the embassy, I’m excited to work with you. You and I have an incredible once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to redefine diplomacy. What it can accomplish could be the most consequential global partnership of this century,” he added.

‘Modi-Trump friendship real’

Gor also sought to allay doubts over the friendship shared by PM Modi and President Trump, asserting that it is very much real. “I’ve travelled all over the world with President Trump, and I can attest that his friendship with Prime Minister Modi is real. The United States and India are bound not just by shared interest, but by a relationship anchored at the highest levels. Real friends can disagree, but always resolve their differences in the end,” he said.

“I spoke with President Trump just yesterday, and I bring his warm wishes to all the people of India, especially his dear friend, the incredible Prime Minister Modi. As many of you might have heard, the President is quite busy, not only around the world, but also redecorating and renovating Washington, D.C. and when I spoke to the President, I shared with him that I had just driven past the beautiful India Gate. The President has embarked on building a ballroom at the White House, but one of the additional projects that’s on his list is building something similar to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and no offence to the French, but I think what we have here in Delhi might even surpass that,” Gor added.

Mark Ruffalo, Avengers’ Hulk, hints at joining politics, criticises US parties, cheers Zohran Mamdani

Mark Ruffalo hints at a possible political run while criticizing corporate influence in US politics. He also praised Zohran Mamdani’s New York mayoral win, saying it shows what’s possible for the country.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Mark Ruffalo, the beloved ‘Avengers’ hero, might be thinking about a potential future in office. During the All the President’s Men benefit reading for the Stella Adler Foundation in Los Angeles on January 10, Ruffalo opened up to Us Weekly about his political thoughts.

At 58, he admitted that running for office isn’t on his immediate agenda but left the door wide open: “It isn’t on my game card right now, but who knows. I mean, you never say never.”

He added, “I spent a lot of time in that world, and acting. It’s for the people. So, I love the people, and politicians could be doing something good for the people.”

Mark Ruffalo excited about Zohran Mamdani

Ruffalo also shared his enthusiasm for Zohran Mamdani’s victory as New York City mayor over Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa. “It really excited me,” he said. “It shows what’s possible in this country.”

Calling out political excuses

Known for speaking his mind, Ruffalo didn’t hold back when addressing the excuse that meaningful change is too slow or expensive. He said bluntly, “The people in America are suffering. If they weren’t, we wouldn’t be where we are right now.”

He went further, pointing fingers at both parties: “They become completely captured by corporations. It’s time for a new America that is for the working people, the plurality of this country.”

Activism through the years

This isn’t the first time Ruffalo has stirred the political pot. The actor and environmental activist has long been outspoken on social issues. In June, he slammed former President Donald Trump on Instagram over ICE operations in US cities, comparing the agents to “packs of coyotes” and calling out racial injustice.

He continued, “The billionaire up at the top is stealing you blind, and you are worried about the poorest of the poor ruining your life? You are pointing your guns in the wrong direction.”

‘He walks the talk…,’ Shreyas lauds Kohli’s years of consistency

India batter Shreyas Iyer reserved special praise for Virat Kohli after the latter achieved two major milestones with his brilliant 93-run knock in the first ODI against New Zealand on Sunday.

IANS | New Delhi |

India batter Shreyas Iyer reserved special praise for Virat Kohli after the latter achieved two major milestones with his brilliant 93-run knock in the first ODI against New Zealand on Sunday.

The Men in Blue clinched a four-wicket win against the Kiwis to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Kohli entered the match needing just 25 runs to reach 28,000 international runs and achieved the landmark in the 13th over of India’s chase, becoming the fastest cricketer to reach the milestone, achieving it in just 624 innings, 20 fewer than legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who held the world record before the 37-year-old broke it.

Kohli’s innings also saw him surpass Kumar Sangakkara to become the all-time second-highest run-scorer in international cricket history, moving past the Sri Lankan great’s tally of 28,016 runs. Tendulkar remains at the top with 34,357 international runs.

Speaking of his milestones and his calm knock against the BlackCaps, Iyer, in a video shared by the BCCI, said, “Whatever we talk about his innings, it would be less. We’ve been seeing it for so many years now. He’s been doing it consistently. The way he rotates the strike, he takes on the bowler. He basically walks the talk.”

Iyer also delivered a pivotal performance in his comeback game after recovering from the spleen injury he sustained during India’s tour of Australia in October last year. Appointed vice-captain for the series, the middle-order batter teamed up with Kohli to form a 77-run partnership and scored 49 runs off 47 balls, narrowly missing a well-deserved half-century.

“Great momentum, great start for the series, especially. Me coming back, after a while, into the team. It feels great to be part of the squad. But more than that, it was a great feeling to stay in the dressing room with each and every one. I was missing it for quite a while, but I’m happy to be back,” Iyer said of his outing.

Jana Nayagan moves Supreme Court over CBFC certification, Vijay’s Pongal release uncertain after Madras HC stay

Earlier, a single bench of the Madras High Court had ordered the CBFC to immediately certify ‘Jana Nayagan.’ However, a division bench stayed that order, citing insufficient time for the CBFC to respond.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Fans of Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay were gearing up for a Pongal treat, but the release of his latest film, ‘Jana Nayagan’, has suddenly turned into a courtroom drama. What was meant to be a festive celebration for his final film before plunging into politics has now become a legal rollercoaster.

Producer rushes to Supreme Court

The drama escalated when KVN Productions LLP, the producer of ‘Jana Nayagan’, moved the Supreme Court early Monday. The petition challenges an order by a division bench of the Madras High Court that stayed a previous single bench order. It had directed the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) to clear the film immediately.

Producers say they are pushing hard because the film was initially slated for release on January 9. This would mark as Vijay’s last outing before focusing on his newly launched political party, TVK.

The CBFC hurdle for ‘Jana Nayagan’

The trouble began when the CBFC refused certification for ‘Jana Nayagan’. On January 9, a single bench of the Madras High Court sided with the producers and instructed the Board to grant clearance.

But in a swift twist, the CBFC appealed to the division bench the same day, which stayed the earlier order and set the next hearing for January 20.

The division bench felt the single bench hadn’t given the CBFC enough time to respond. This is a classic case of court tug-of-war.

Technical glitches and a sudden revising committee

The producer’s side told the court that the certification process had already been in motion since December 2025. Initially, the CBFC suggested some changes, which the producers accepted. The revised version was submitted on December 24. And by December 29, the Regional Office of the CBFC at Chennai confirmed the film would be certified.

However, a technical glitch in the CBFC portal prevented the final uploading process. The producers promptly informed the Board, but things took a surprising turn on January 5.

The CBFC Chairperson decided to refer the film to Revising Committee following complaint about content hurting religious sentiments and portrayal of armed forces.

Interestingly, the complaint came from a member of the Examining Committee, which had already cleared the film. The single bench of the High Court later slammed this decision, saying the Chairperson’s move to refer the film after the Examining Committee’s approval was unjustified.

Next steps for ‘Jana Nayagan’

The division bench hearing is set for January 20, and until then, the film’s release hangs in suspense.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court petition by the producers keeps the tension high for fans.

U.S. Fed chair Powell under investigation

The U.S. Federal Reserve confirmed late Sunday that the federal prosecutors are investigating Fed Chair Jerome Powell over the central bank’s multi-billion-dollar project to renovate its headquarters.

UNI | New Delhi |

The U.S. Federal Reserve confirmed late Sunday that the federal prosecutors are investigating Fed Chair Jerome Powell over the central bank’s multi-billion-dollar project to renovate its headquarters.

In a public statement posted on the website of the Federal Reserve late Sunday, Powell said the Department of Justice on Friday served the Fed with grand jury subpoenas, “threatening a criminal indictment related to my testimony before the Senate Banking Committee last June. That testimony concerned in part a multi-year project to renovate historic Federal Reserve office buildings.”

“This unprecedented action should be seen in the broader context of the administration’s threats and ongoing pressure,” Powell said. “The threat of criminal charges is a consequence of the Federal Reserve setting interest rates based on our best assessment of what will serve the public, rather than following the preferences of the President.”
“This is about whether the Fed will be able to continue to set interest rates based on evidence and economic conditions — or whether instead monetary policy will be directed by political pressure or intimidation,” he said.

Powell stressed that he “will continue to do the job the Senate confirmed me to do, with integrity and a commitment to serving the American people.”
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia is overseeing the investigation, local media reported.

Ever since taking his office in January 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized Powell for not cutting interest rates as much and as quickly as he demanded.
Powell was first appointed Fed chair by President Donald Trump in 2018 and reappointed to a second term by former President Joe Biden in 2022. His current term is set to expire in May 2026.

North India shivers under intense cold wave; Magh Mela draws devotees despite biting chill

A severe cold wave continued to grip large parts of Uttar Pradesh and north India on Monday morning, with dense fog reducing visibility in several cities even as thousands of devotees braved the freezing conditions to take a holy dip at the Sangam in Prayagraj during the ongoing Magh Mela.

ANI | New Delhi |

A severe cold wave continued to grip large parts of Uttar Pradesh and north India on Monday morning, with dense fog reducing visibility in several cities even as thousands of devotees braved the freezing conditions to take a holy dip at the Sangam in Prayagraj during the ongoing Magh Mela.

In Agra, a thin layer of fog enveloped the Taj Mahal, creating low-visibility conditions at the Taj View Point area.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city’s maximum temperature is expected to hover around 20 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is likely to drop to 7 degrees Celsius as cold conditions intensify.

Despite the extreme cold, devotees continued to arrive in large numbers at the Sangam in Prayagraj, undeterred by the plunging temperatures.
Pilgrims took a holy dip in the early hours of the morning, as the spiritual fervour of the Magh Mela remained strong amid harsh winter conditions.
The Magh Mela of Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh), which takes place at the divine Triveni Sangam, the place of confluence of the sacred rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and the legendary Saraswati, is one of the largest pilgrimages in India. The pilgrimage is named after the Hindu month of Magh, which typically falls in January-February.
The Prayag Magh Mela is a 45-day pilgrimage that begins on Paush Purnima (the full moon day of the month of Paush) and ends on Mahashivaratri, spanning the entire month of Magh.
Meanwhile, cold wave conditions were also reported in Haridwar, where dense fog blanketed the Har ki Paudi ghat, significantly affecting visibility.
In Haryana, thick fog engulfed Karnal district as the cold wave intensified. IMD forecasts indicate that the maximum temperature in Karnal is expected to reach 17 degrees Celsius, while the minimum could dip to around 4 degrees Celsius.
Furthermore, Mumbai also witnessed deteriorating air conditions, with a layer of smog lingering over areas such as Wadala on Monday morning.
Meanwhile, New Delhi reeled under an intense cold spell as temperatures dipped sharply across the national capital, with Ayanagar recording the lowest minimum temperature at 2.9 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Several parts of the city witnessed cold wave conditions on Sunday night, with minimum temperatures plunging close to the three-degree mark. Palam recorded a minimum temperature of 3.0 degrees Celsius, its lowest in several years. IMD data suggests that similar cold conditions are likely to persist through the day.
At Safdarjung, the minimum temperature was 4.8 degrees Celsius on Sunday night and is expected to drop further to around 3 degrees Celsius tonight. The Ridge station recorded a minimum temperature of 3.7 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature there reached 18.8 degrees Celsius.
Furthermore, air pollution levels remained a concern. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 293, falling under the ‘poor’ category as of 7 am on Monday. This marked a slight rise compared to Saturday’s AQI reading of 291.

Karur stampede: TVK chief Vijay questioned by CBI in Delhi for over 6 hours

The CBI had summoned TVK chief and actor Vijay for questioning in connection with the deadly stampede that took place at his party’s political rally in Karur district of Tamil Nadu on September 27 last year.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Months after the Karur tragedy in Tamil Nadu, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay on Monday appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) at its New Delhi headquarters in connection with the case. Vijay, who arrived in Delhi from Chennai by a private flight, spent around six hours at the CBI office and left in the evening after 6 pm.

The agency had summoned the TVK chief and actor for questioning in connection with the deadly stampede that took place at his party’s political rally in Karur district of Tamil Nadu on September 27 last year.

No details of the CBI questioning of the popular actor-turned-politician were available. According to CBI sources, he is likely to be questioned again.

At least 41 people were killed and more than 100 were injured in the stampede that took place at Veluchamipuram near Karur. A massive crowd had come to attend the TVK campaign rally, which led to severe overcrowding. Due to the alleged inadequate arrangements to manage the massive crowd, a stampede occurred, resulting in deaths and injuries.

The probe so far

A widespread public outrage followed. The matter also reached the judiciary, with the Supreme Court ordering the CBI to lead the investigation.

Following the top court’s directions, a special CBI team from Delhi travelled to Karur to carry out a detailed probe. The team has camped in Karur for several weeks.

So far, over 200 individuals, including family members of the deceased, injured victims, ambulance drivers, eyewitnesses, and local residents, have been examined by the CBI team and their statements recorded.

Several officials and political functionaries have also been questioned in connection with the matter. These include TVK leaders N Anand, Adhav Arjun, and CTR Nirmal Kumar. The Karur District Collector and the Superintendent of Police have also been examined. Many of those questioned have also been summoned to Delhi.

The CBI team also reconstructed the scene of the tragedy in Karur as part of the technical and forensic investigation to ascertain the circumstances that led to the stampede and to identify possible lapses.

News agency IANS had earlier reported that the CBI’s line of questioning was likely to focus on crowd management, security arrangements, permissions, and the overall conduct of the rally.

The Union Home Ministry, ahead of Vijay’s appearance before the CBI in Delhi, had asked the Delhi Police Commissioner to ensure adequate security for the actor.

Vijay’s questioning in the Karur stampede case assumes political significance in view of the upcoming Assembly Elections in Tamil Nadu.

Golden Globes 2026 opening monologue: Nikki Glaser targets Leonardo DiCaprio, Epstein Files and just everyone

Nikki Glaser kicked off the Golden Globes 2026 with a bold, no-holds-barred monologue that had Hollywood laughing, gasping, and squirming. There was a sharp Leonardo DiCaprio dating joke to a daring Epstein files reference. No A-lister was spared.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Nikki Glaser walked in at the Golden Globes 2026 night like she owned the place, again. The 83rd edition of the awards on Sunday didn’t begin with polite smiles or safe jokes. They began with fire. And Nikki made sure no famous face stayed untouched.

Nikki Glaser kicked off the night by reminding everyone that she was not a one-time experiment. She had returned, sharper.

“Just like ‘Wicked’, I’m back for a sequel,” she said before adding a line only Nikki could pull off: “Just like Frankenstein, I have been pieced together by an unlicensed European surgeon.”

Leonardo DiCaprio joke that stole the room

Then came ‘the’ joke of the night aimed straight at Leonardo DiCaprio.

Nikki praised his legendary career, listing his iconic performances, his work with top directors, his three Golden Globes and his Oscar. Then she landed the punchline: “The most impressive thing is you were able to accomplish all that before your girlfriend turned 30.”

The room exploded. Leo laughed. Cameras zoomed in. Social media immediately went wild.

“Leo, I’m sorry I made that joke. It’s cheap,” she said. “I tried not to, but we don’t know anything else about you, man. There’s nothing else. Open up! I’m serious!”

Leonardo DiCaprio laughed, nodded along, and even gave Nikki a thumbs up.

Timothée Chalamet and a ping-pong workout

Next up was Best Actor winner Timothée Chalamet, who didn’t escape either. Nikki joked that Timothée had made history by becoming “the first actor ever to have to put on muscle for a movie about ping-pong.”

It was weird. It was funny. And it somehow made total sense in Nikki’s world.

Michael B Jordan, twins, and an awkward laugh

Michael B Jordan also found himself in Nikki’s spotlight for his role in ‘Sinners’.

She joked, “In ‘Sinners’, Michael played two brothers. Am I allowed to say that? Doesn’t sound right.”

Quickly correcting herself, she said he played twins, adding, “I can’t believe it. We got two Michael B Jordans.” Then came the line that made the room gasp and giggle: “When I saw that, I was like Nikki B Jerkin’, because that was awesome.”

Michael B Jordan laughed awkwardly while sitting right next to his mother. The camera caught it all.

Hollywood deals and dark jokes

Nikki didn’t just roast actors. She went after the industry itself. Talking about the much-discussed Netflix–Warner Bros deal, she joked: “We’ll start the bidding for Warner Bros at $5. Do I hear $5?” Then she moved on to brutally roast the Epstein Files.

And then came one of her boldest turns of the night.

“There are so many A-listers here,” she said, “and by A-listers, I mean people who are on a list that has been heavily redacted.”

The punchline landed hard: “And the Golden Globe for Best Editing goes to the Justice Department.”

No one was safe: Sean Penn, Kevin Hart, The Rock

Nikki saved a few quick jabs for others too. She called Sean Penn a “sexy leather handbag”, confusing, hilarious, oddly accurate.

She also described Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson as “the Steve Martin and Martin Short for people under 50 IQ.”

Nikki Glaser first hosted the Golden Globes last year and clearly made a strong enough impression to be invited back for the 2026 edition.

‘Adolescence’ dominates Golden Globes 2026 with three big wins, youngest winner Owen Cooper makes history

Netflix’s ‘Adolescence’ follows the arrest of a 13-year-old boy in a murder case, focusing not on the crime itself but on the emotional and social reasons behind it. The limited series explores family, guilt, and growing up under pressure through powerful performances.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

The applause has not stopped, and ‘Adolescence’ is clearly the name everyone is whispering about in Hollywood right now. This Netflix limited series is having a moment. And what a moment it is. If trophies could talk, they would probably ask for more shelf space for Golden Globe 2026 at the ‘Adolescence’ team’s homes.

Golden night for ‘Adolescence’

At the Golden Globe Awards 2026, ‘Adolescence’ walked in as a strong contender and walked out as one of the biggest winners of the night.

The limited series won three Golden Globe awards.

History made by a teenage star, Owen Cooper

The loudest cheer of the evening belonged to Owen Cooper, and for good reason. At just 16 years old, Owen made history by becoming the youngest actor ever to win a Golden Globe. That alone would be enough to grab headlines. But his win felt even more special because of the tough role he carried on such young shoulders.

Best limited series win

As if one historic moment was not enough, ‘Adolescence’ also won Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.

Erin Doherty shines in supporting role

The winning streak continued when Erin Doherty picked up the Golden Globe for Best Female Supporting Actor in a television series. Her performance added emotional depth to the story and gave the show another reason to celebrate.

It was one of those wins where everyone nodded and said, “Well deserved.”

Stephen Graham’s powerful performance wins big

Actor-director Stephen Graham also had a memorable night. He won Best Male Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Made-for-TV Movie for his role as a deeply troubled father.

Awards love did not start here

This is not the first time ‘Adolescence’ has been showered with praise. Earlier this month, the series picked up major wins at the Critics’ Choice Awards, including Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie.

Last year, it also earned several honours at the Emmy Awards.

What ‘Adolescence’ is really about

In the four-episode Netflix series, Owen plays Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old schoolboy arrested in a murder case. The story does not focus on who committed the crime. Instead, it digs deeper into why Jamie’s life took such a tragic turn.

The series also stars Stephen Graham as Jamie’s father, Christine Tremarco as his mother, and Amelie Pease as his sister. According to ‘Deadline’, ‘Adolescence’ crossed 141 million views in its first three months, becoming Netflix’s second most-watched series after ‘Wednesday’.
