Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of late Libyan leader, shot dead by masked gunmen: Reports

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, was reportedly shot dead on Tuesday in an armed attack in Zintan, Libya, as per media reports.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, was reportedly shot dead on Tuesday in an armed attack in Zintan, Libya, as per media reports.

The 53-year-old Saif al-Islam Gaddafi was a prominent figure in Libya’s political landscape since the NATO-backed uprising in 2011 that toppled his father’s regime. Muammar Gaddafi ruled Libya from 1969 until he was killed in the 2011 uprising.

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi’s death was confirmed in a statement posted on a social media platform by Abdullah Othman Abdurrahim, a member of Gaddafi’s team. According to him, four masked gunmen stormed Gaddafi’s residence in Zintan at noon and disabled surveillance cameras before a direct armed confrontation took place, leading to Saif al-Islam’s death. Though he did not mention who may have been behind the attack.

Also, his lawyer has confirmed to the AFP news agency that a unit of four armed men killed Gaddafi at his home in the city of Zintan.

Meanwhile, Gaddafi’s political team has appealed to the Libyan judiciary and the international community to carry out investigations into the attack. They have urged the authorities to identify the perpetrators, including the mastermind behind the attack.

However, so far, there has been no official statement from the authorities in Tripoli and Zintan about his assassination.

According to local media, the Libyan Attorney General’s Office has initiated an investigation into the killing.

Saurabh Dwivedi joins Saif Ali Khan in Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies produced Netflix film ‘Kartavya’

Saif Ali Khan turns cop in Netflix’s ‘Kartavya’, an investigative drama produced by Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment. The film also marks journalist Saurabh Dwivedi’s acting debut.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Saif Ali Khan is clearly not in the mood to play it safe. Just when you think you’ve seen him in every possible avatar, Netflix drops a surprise and says: here comes Saif, the cop. Serious, layered, and stuck in a moral mess. And honestly? Bollywood gossip lovers are already leaning in.

At Netflix’s flashy Next on Netflix event, the streaming giant revealed its India slate for 2026, and one announcement quietly stole the spotlight, ‘Kartavya’. It is an investigative drama starring Saif Ali Khan and backed by Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment. Big names, big stakes, big expectations.

Saif Ali Khan becomes a cop again but with a twist

In ‘Kartavya’, Saif Ali Khan steps into the shoes of a police officer caught between dharm, karm, and duty. Netflix summed it up with a dramatic line: “Dharm aur karm ke yuddh mein, kya kartavya jeet payega?” In simple words, when right and wrong blur, what choice will duty make?

The film promises an intense investigative setup, not loud action, but quiet tension. Think long silences, tough questions, uncomfortable truths. This is Saif’s comfort zone. Flawed men, sharp minds, moral chaos.

‘Kartavya’ cast including Saurabh Dwivedi

Joining Saif is an interesting mix of talent. Rasika Dugal brings her calm intensity, while Sanjay Mishra adds weight and unpredictability. But the biggest talking point? Journalist Saurabh Dwivedi making his acting debut.

Just last month, Dwivedi shocked fans by announcing his exit from ‘The Lallantop’, where his deep, viral interviews made him a familiar face. Now, he’s crossing over to acting. And audiences are curious, nervous, and excited all at once.

The film is directed by Pulkit, known for the hard-hitting ‘Bhakshak’.

Expect realism, not glamour. Grit, not gloss. The release date is still under wraps but the buzz is already loud.

Saif’s other Netflix Film: ‘Hum Hindustani’

Netflix also confirmed ‘Hum Hindustani’, another Saif Ali Khan project. Set in post-Independence India, the film follows a small group of officials trying to conduct India’s first democratic election against impossible odds. Inspired by real events, it stars Pratik Gandhi and is directed by Rahul Dholakia.

‘Fadnavis has no right to speak on NCP merger’: Sharad Pawar, says no ‘political discussions’ between factions

Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) chief Sharad Pawar on Wednesday said that discussions on a possible merger of the two NCP factions were held between Ajit Pawar and Jayant Patil, and not with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

ANI | New Delhi |

Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) chief Sharad Pawar on Wednesday said that discussions on a possible merger of the two NCP factions were held between Ajit Pawar and Jayant Patil, and not with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Pawar also expressed happiness that Sunetra Pawar was sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister.
Addressing a press conference in Baramati, Pawar said, “I am happy that Sunetra Pawar is sworn in as Deputy CM….Merger discussions were held between Ajit Pawar and Jayant Patil. CM Fadnavis was not involved in the talks. What right did he have to talk about it?”
“At present, our entire focus is on taking care of everyone and moving forward together with those who are grieving. As of now, there is no discussion at all about any political decisions,” he added.

Ajit Pawar, 66, died on the morning of January 28 after the aircraft carrying him crashed while attempting to land at the Baramati airport in Pune district.
NCP Sunetra Pawar, leader of the Nationalist Congress Party and widow of the late Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, stepped into fill the post that became vacant following the demise of Ajit Pawar.
Further, Pawar said he could not attend Parliament on Budget Day for the first time in 58 years due to a family incident and expressed concern that the Union Budget may create difficulties for common people.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday (February 1) presented the Union Budget 2026-27 in Lok Sabha, her ninth consecutive Budget.
“Whether it is the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly or the Lok Sabha of the country, I have been a member for the past 58 years. In all these 58 years, I have never been absent from Parliament on Budget Day. Unfortunately, due to an incident in my family, I could not be present in Parliament on the day of the Budget this time,” Pawar said.
“However, from whatever I have read, I can see two or three issues. A new type of tax has been introduced, which appears likely to cause difficulties for the common people. From this Budget, it was expected that concrete steps would be taken to accelerate development works,” he said.

Pawar further talked about the India-US trade deal and said it may harm Indian farmers, and added that more details of the agreement are needed before any conclusion is drawn.
The India-US trade deal reduces tariffs on Indian goods in the US to 18 per cent, while Washington has claimed the deal will help it export more agricultural products to New Delhi.

“The second issue relates to information I have received that the United States has reduced the kind of taxes it had imposed on India. I have one or two concerns regarding this. A clear picture regarding the new agreement between the United States and India should emerge before the country in the next two to three days, and only after that can a detailed discussion be held. But from what has been made public by the United States so far, it appears that arrangements have been made to allow them to export in the agricultural sector, which is a matter of concern for India,” he said.

“The United States is a powerful country with greater economic strength. If it exports any important agricultural product to other countries, it will certainly have an impact on that country and its farming community. There is an expectation that such a situation should not arise in India’s agricultural sector,” Pawar said.

Mumbai–Pune Expressway traffic disrupted for over 12 hours after gas tanker overturns near Adoshi tunnel

Traffic on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway was disrupted for over 12 hours after a gas tanker overturned near the Adoshi tunnel, leaving hundreds of motorists stranded overnight.

Statesman News Service | Mumbai |

Traffic on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway came to a standstill overnight after a gas tanker overturned in the Khandala Ghat stretch, triggering a prolonged emergency response and leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded.

The accident happened near the Adoshi tunnel in Raigad district on Tuesday evening. Soon after the tanker overturned, gas began leaking from the vehicle, forcing authorities to slow down rescue and clearance work.

By early Wednesday, congestion had stretched across both carriageways, with motorists stuck for hours and movement reduced to a crawl.

Passengers reported long waits without access to food, drinking water, or toilet facilities as vehicles remained stationary near the site.

Gas leak delays restoration of traffic on Mumbai–Pune Expressway

According to the expressway control room, the tanker overturned at around 5 pm on Tuesday. It was allegedly moving at high speed when it lost control on the slope near the tunnel and toppled over.

To manage the situation, Mumbai-bound vehicles were diverted onto the Pune-bound carriageway for a two-kilometre stretch. However, the diversion offered little relief.

Officials said traffic could not be fully restored due to the continuous gas leak, leading to long queues and severe congestion for more than 12 hours, including on the Pune-bound side.

By Wednesday morning, traffic remained heavy, and commuters were advised to expect delays while authorities worked to secure the tanker and clear the roadway.

Iran reports ‘successful’ drone mission as US says it shot down aircraft near carrier

A drone belonging to Iran’s armed forces completed a “surveillance mission” in international waters Tuesday, Iranian media reported, shortly after the US military said it had shot down an Iranian aircraft that “aggressively approached” an aircraft carrier.

IANS | New Delhi |

A drone belonging to Iran’s armed forces completed a “surveillance mission” in international waters Tuesday, Iranian media reported, shortly after the US military said it had shot down an Iranian aircraft that “aggressively approached” an aircraft carrier.

Citing unnamed sources, the Fars news agency reported that the drone “successfully” monitored military movements in areas adjacent to Iran and transmitted data to ground bases in real time. The report described such missions as vital for the “overall monitoring” of the region, Xinhua news agency reported.

Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency quoted an informed source as saying that Iran lost connection to one of its drones, the cause of which is under investigation and will be announced after it is determined.

The US Central Command said earlier in the day that a US F-35C warplane “was forced” to shoot down an Iranian Shahed-139 drone in the Arabian Sea. The command stated that the drone had “unnecessarily maneuvered” toward the USS Abraham Lincoln while the carrier was transiting international waters approximately 800 km from the Iranian coast.

According to the US statement, the drone was shot down in “an act of self-defense.” No US troops were injured, and no equipment was damaged in the encounter, the military said.

The encounter comes amid a significant buildup of American forces in the region. The Trump administration deployed an aircraft carrier strike group and several warships to the Middle East in late January, as the US president continues to issue warnings to Tehran.

Dense fog grips Delhi; low visibility procedures in place at IGI Airport

Delhi-NCR remained in the grip of cold and dense fog on Wednesday as winter conditions continued to disrupt daily life across the national capital.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Delhi-NCR remained in the grip of cold and dense fog on Wednesday as winter conditions continued to disrupt daily life across the national capital.

Several areas reported low visibility during the early morning hours, leading to slower traffic movement and inconvenience for commuters. The combined impact of cold winds, fog and cloudy skies made mornings particularly harsh for residents.

Amid the prevailing weather conditions, the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport issued a passenger advisory, confirming that Low Visibility Procedures (LVP) were in effect. In an official update, Delhi Airport said, “Low Visibility Procedures are in progress at Delhi Airport. All flight operations continue as normal. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information.” While flight operations were largely normal, passengers were advised to stay in touch with airlines for the latest updates due to the possibility of delays.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a latest bulletin, stating that moderate to dense fog is likely to prevail across many parts of Delhi during the morning hours on Wednesday. The sky is expected to remain partly cloudy throughout the day, limiting sunshine.

According to the IMD, while most areas will experience moderate fog, isolated pockets may witness dense fog conditions, especially during early hours. Due to fog and haze, the weather department has issued a Yellow Alert for the entire city. Reduced visibility is expected to impact road traffic during morning hours, particularly on major roads and highways.

Authorities have advised commuters to drive cautiously and maintain safe distances while travelling.

In terms of temperature, Delhi is likely to record a maximum of 21 to 23 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may hover around 9 degrees Celsius. Over the past few days, minimum temperatures have ranged between 8 and 10 degrees Celsius, remaining below normal and intensifying the chill during early mornings and nights.

The IMD noted that cold conditions are likely to continue over the next few days, with foggy mornings remaining a regular feature. Residents, especially children and the elderly, have been advised to take precautions against the cold and remain cautious during foggy conditions.

Penélope Cruz and Owen Wilson, who were attached to an earlier version of the film, remain closely linked to the project as it takes its next steps toward production.

A Star-Studded Ensemble Taking Shape

Beyond Cruz and Wilson, the film is shaping up to feature an impressive ensemble. Oscar winner Kieran Culkin, along with Jude Law and Sex Education star Emma Mackey, are reportedly in advanced negotiations to join the cast.

While details about the story are being kept firmly under wraps, sources have stressed that any previously circulated plot descriptions are inaccurate.

From Netflix to Warner Bros

The project’s journey to the big screen has been anything but straightforward. Initially developed at Netflix, the film had Scarlett Johansson and Michael Fassbender in talks at one stage, alongside Cruz and Wilson.

However, the streamer ultimately pulled the plug in March 2023, reportedly due to the project’s high budget, which was estimated between $130 million and $150 million

Just days after Netflix exited, Warner Bros stepped in and has since been actively committed to mounting the film—this time at a significantly reduced cost.

Holiday Release Plans and Production Details

Warner Bros has earmarked the film for a Christmas Day 2027 release, positioning it as a major holiday offering. Meyers will produce the project alongside Ilona Herzberg, with Diana Pokorny serving as executive producer.

At one point during development, Adam Driver was also linked to the film before ultimately committing to Michael Mann’s Heat 2.

A Beloved Filmmaker’s Comeback

Known for her signature blend of romance, warmth and sharp dialogue, Nancy Meyers’ return is already generating industry buzz. With a high-profile cast and a prime release date locked in, her upcoming film is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated studio releases on the horizon.

Forecast for light showers in South TN, delta districts; fog in western parts

Residents across Tamil Nadu can expect a mix of mild winter chill, patchy fog, and isolated rainfall over the next couple of days, according to the latest advisory issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre.

IANS | New Delhi |

Residents across Tamil Nadu can expect a mix of mild winter chill, patchy fog, and isolated rainfall over the next couple of days, according to the latest advisory issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre.

The weather department has forecast moderate early-morning fog in several western and north-western districts, particularly in the hilly and interior regions. Districts including Nilgiris, Salem, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tirupathur, Vellore and Ranipet are likely to wake up to misty conditions during the pre-dawn and early hours.

Reduced visibility may affect commuters and motorists on highways and ghat roads, prompting authorities to advise caution during morning travel.

In contrast to the foggy conditions in the western belt, parts of southern Tamil Nadu and the fertile delta districts are expected to receive light rainfall on Thursday. The meteorological centre has predicted scattered, light showers at one or two places across these regions. Karaikal and adjoining coastal areas may also witness brief spells of rain.

Though the rainfall is not expected to be intense, it could provide temporary relief from the prevailing dry weather and benefit standing crops in agricultural belts.

Elsewhere in Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry, dry weather conditions are expected to persist. Skies are likely to remain largely clear to partly cloudy, with no significant precipitation forecast for most interior and northern regions.

Meanwhile, temperatures across interior Tamil Nadu are projected to rise slightly in the coming days.

Weather officials have indicated that maximum temperatures may remain above normal the day after Thursday, especially in inland districts. The warmer daytime conditions could contrast with the cooler mornings caused by fog and cloud cover, creating noticeable fluctuations in temperature. Chennai, the State capital, is expected to experience partly cloudy skies.

While no major rainfall has been forecast for the city, residents can anticipate relatively pleasant weather, with moderate daytime warmth and comfortable evenings.

Overall, the state is set to experience varied weather patterns ranging from foggy mornings in the hills to light showers in the south, while most regions remain dry. Authorities recommend that travellers, farmers and the general public stay updated with local forecasts and take necessary precautions.

Barbara Forever Review: Love, politics, lesbian iconography that made Barbara Hammer a cinematic revolutionary

Step into the vibrant, sensual world of Barbara Hammer, the lesbian cinema pioneer who turned archives into art and love into rebellion. ‘Barbara Forever’ is a playful, intimate celebration of desire, identity, and a life lived unapologetically.

Bibhu Luitel | New Delhi |

Barbara Forever Review: If you’ve ever thought, ‘Where’s the lesbian history?’, Barbara Hammer would probably wink at you and say, “Make it yourself, darling.”

And she did. Over 80 times. The new documentary ‘Barbara Forever’, directed by Brydie O’Connor, is a time capsule, a love letter, and a riot of lesbian brilliance all rolled into one. Think of it as part history lesson, part diary, all heart. Hammer, who passed away in 2019, isn’t just the subject. She is everywhere, in the frame and in spirit. And yes, she’s still mischievous, gap-toothed grin and all, making Sundance 1993 look like the hottest lesbian party you weren’t invited to.

Also Read: Josephine Review: This is what trauma looks like before it has a name

Personal footage, big emotions

What makes ‘Barbara Forever’ feel so alive is the way O’Connor digs into Hammer’s personal archive. Half a century of films, home videos, camcorder fuzz, and warm beige hues of indoor gatherings give the film a tactile quality.

You almost smell the winter jackets, the hardwood floors, the excitement of queer spaces coming to life. Early footage from ‘Nitrate Kisses’ at Sundance is classic: a man deadpans to camera, “I see more baby dykes running around than I ever have before, and that’s all your fault, Barbara.”

Then Barbara pops up, ushanka hat on, full of warmth, energy, and that playful aura that made her a legend.

Watching it feels like sitting in someone’s living room as history unfolds, but the history is very much alive, sensual, political, tender, and radical all at once.

Lesbian love, celebrated out loud

This documentary isn’t just about Hammer’s work. It’s about love. Her long-term partner, Florrie R Burke, appears throughout, spilling admiration and devotion. It’s a rare and beautiful thing to see lesbian love celebrated with such fullness and intimacy on screen.

Hammer’s films often focus on the same themes: eroticism, care, ritual, and joy. But here, we see it mirrored in real life.

You feel the tenderness and the intensity, a love not just for people but for a life lived authentically. And that, perhaps, is Hammer’s ultimate gift. She made lesbian desire, identity, history feel normal, celebratory, cinematic.

Building a new lesbian cinema

Barbara Hammer didn’t just make films. She actually invented a visual language. Her work helped define a “new lesbian aesthetic,” an iconography of the lesbian body that was revolutionary. She turned away from patriarchal norms and toward self-definition. And, she created a cinematic universe where women’s eroticism, care, and joy could exist without shame or voyeurism.

Early on, her films were fiery and reactive. Anger at the patriarchy would spill onto the screen. But over time, works like ‘I WAS/I AM’, ‘X’, and ‘Psychosynthesis’ synthesised this energy into something more complex.

She explored Jungian archetypes, collaging selves, emotions, and identities into a new mythology of lesbian existence. It wasn’t just art. It was survival, affirmation, liberation.

Erotic, but never exploitative

Let’s get one thing straight. Barbara Hammer’s films are erotic, but not pornographic. The camera isn’t a controlling male gaze. It’s curious, tender, and exploratory. Women’s bodies in her films are shown in contexts of love, care, and ritual, not domination.

Compare this to Constance Beeson’s ‘Holding’, and the difference is clear. Beeson’s distant camera creates alienation; Hammer’s lens invites intimacy. She made eroticism inclusive, playful, and celebratory, and never prescriptive.

There’s a subtle brilliance in this. Hammer’s films ask: ‘This is one way to love and live. There are others too.’ In doing so, she expanded not just cinema, but imagination.

Ritual, performance, radical joy

One of Hammer’s most fascinating tools was ritual. By creating cinematic rituals, she challenged habitual ways of seeing, breaking down patriarchal mythology and constructing alternative worlds for women. Scenes in ‘Superdyke’, for instance, show diverse groups of naked women walking hand-in-hand through meadows; ritualised, erotic, tender, unifying. It’s playful yet profound.

Hammer asks us to imagine worlds where intimacy, eroticism coexist freely. Watching them, you feel connected to something profoundly human.

A film for cinephiles, scholars (and everyone)

Yes, ‘Barbara Forever’ is a treasure trove for historians, queer theorists, film scholars. But it’s not dry or academic. It’s funny, charming, brimming with human energy. Whether you’re in it for lesbian history, feminist filmmaking, or just a good story of love and rebellion, this film delivers.

For cinephiles, it’s a gold mine of archival footage and avant-garde experiments. For casual viewers, it’s a journey into the life of a woman who refused to wait for representation. She made it herself.

Barbara Hammer beyond the screen

Barbara Hammer’s influence is felt far beyond her films. She helped redefine what cinema could do: show difference, create eroticism without exploitation, and make invisible histories visible. She crafted a new language for the lesbian body, and through ritual, collage, and sensitivity, she made art that was personal, political, and profoundly playful.

‘Barbara Forever’ captures this spirit perfectly. O’Connor curates Hammer’s work with care letting the footage speak for itself while threading a narrative that’s affectionate, informative, celebratory. The result is a film that feels alive, urgent, necessary.

If you’ve ever wondered what it would feel like to step into a world made entirely for queer women, here it is. Barbara Hammer made it, and now ‘Barbara Forever’ invites you to walk through it with her.

Shooter of former Japanese PM Abe appeals life sentence

Tetsuya Yamagami, the man who fatally shot former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2022, filed an appeal on Wednesday against his life sentence.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Tetsuya Yamagami, the man who fatally shot former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2022, filed an appeal on Wednesday against his life sentence.

The Nara District Court on January 21 handed down a life sentence to Yamagami, 45, who was convicted of murder and other charges for shooting Abe with a homemade gun in July 2022 while the former leader was delivering a campaign speech on a street in Nara.

The ruling rejected the defence counsel’s argument that his unfavorable upbringing should be considered in determining his sentence.

Masaaki Furukawa, one of Yamagami’s lawyers, said the decision to appeal was made after consultations with the defendant to seek a review and possible correction of the initial ruling, the Asahi Shimbun reported.

Wednesday was the deadline for him to file an appeal against the January 21 ruling by the Nara court. Yamagami agreed to appeal after strong persuasion from his lawyers, domestic media reported, quoting informed sources.

Yamagami had earlier admitted to murdering Abe during his trial at the Nara District Court, saying that he committed the crime due to a grudge he held against the Unification Church because his family suffered financial ruin due to his mother’s large donations to the religious group, which he believed had close ties to Abe and other Japanese politicians.

Yamagami’s defence had called for a prison term of no more than 20 years, arguing that he was a victim of a religious group’s harm and that his ‘tragic’ upbringing motivated him to kill Abe, Xinhua news agency reported.

The court, however, maintained that while his upbringing involved significant hardship, it did not justify a substantial reduction in sentence.

The life sentence was in line with what prosecutors had requested. The defence team, which did not contest the basic facts surrounding the murder that took place in broad daylight, had asked that Yamagami’s sentence be capped at 20 years or less, saying their client deserved a chance to make a fresh start in society.

Vijay plans big rally in TN’s Salem as TVK revives campaign after Karur stampede

Actor-turned-politician and TVK leader Vijay is set to resume his statewide election campaign with renewed momentum, weeks after a tragic stampede incident disrupted the party’s activities in Karur district.

IANS | New Delhi |

Actor-turned-politician and TVK leader Vijay is set to resume his statewide election campaign with renewed momentum, weeks after a tragic stampede incident disrupted the party’s activities in Karur district.

On September 27, 2025, chaos broke out during Vijay’s campaign rally at Veluchamipuram in Karur, where an unexpected crowd surge led to a stampede that left 41 people injured. The incident forced the party to slow down its public programmes and temporarily suspend several administrative and campaign-related activities for nearly a month.

After this brief pause, the party has now restarted its political operations with greater intensity. As part of the revival efforts, a special general council meeting was recently convened at a private venue in Mamallapuram under Vijay’s leadership.

The meeting focused on strengthening the party’s grassroots machinery and planning the next phase of the campaign ahead of the Assembly elections.

With organisational work back on track, Vijay has begun charting out his next round of public outreach programmes. His upcoming campaign trail will take him to the Salem district, where the party is planning a major public rally at Magudanchavadi.

TVK functionaries have formally submitted a petition to the police department seeking permission to conduct the meeting. This rally is expected to mark Vijay’s first major live public gathering in Tamil Nadu after the Karur mishap.

His first public appearance following the stampede incident had taken place earlier at Uppalam Harbour in Puducherry. Subsequently, another large public meeting was organised on December 18, 2025, at Vijayamangalam in Erode district, drawing significant crowds. Party sources said the Salem rally, scheduled for January 13, is being planned on a much larger scale, with improved safety measures and crowd control arrangements to prevent any repeat of the Karur episode.

Interestingly, police had earlier denied permission for a campaign event in Salem on December 4, 2025, citing security concerns. However, the party has now reapplied, expressing confidence that the necessary safeguards will be in place.

Magudanchavadi also carries political significance, as it was once a campaign venue for former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa during the 2016 Assembly elections — adding symbolic weight to Vijay’s planned rally

PM Modi likely to reply to Motion of Thanks today after repeated Lok Sabha disruptions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to reply to the Motion of Thanks today after repeated Lok Sabha disruptions over China references, trade questions, and rising tensions between the government and opposition.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to reply to the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, at around 5 pm.

His reply comes after a stormy day in Parliament, where repeated disruptions forced multiple adjournments and led to the suspension of eight opposition MPs.

The debate, meant to close the discussion on President Droupadi Murmu’s address, has instead turned into a sharp political clash over national security, China, and India’s recent trade engagements.

China references derail debate as House adjourned repeatedly

The Lok Sabha struggled to function on Tuesday as proceedings were adjourned three times within hours.

The House was first paused soon after it assembled at 11 am. It was adjourned again at noon and later until 3 pm, as verbal exchanges between the ruling BJP and opposition parties grew louder.

The confrontation began during the Motion of Thanks debate when Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi raised concerns about India-China relations. He spoke about the wider consequences of the China-US conflict for India’s global role and questioned the Prime Minister’s handling of the 2020 border standoff.

Gandhi also sought parliamentary authentication of an article linked to the issue and repeatedly referred to former Army Chief General MM Naravane’s unpublished memoir.

BJP members objected strongly, accusing him of straying beyond the scope of the debate and showing disrespect to the armed forces. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju urged members not to reopen matters already settled. The Chair, meanwhile, repeatedly asked Gandhi to confine his remarks to the Motion of Thanks.

As tempers rose, opposition MPs moved into the well of the House and raised slogans, including “Surrender Modi.” BJP leaders described the protests as a deliberate attempt to disrupt proceedings and a violation of parliamentary norms.

Trade questions and PAC reports crowd the agenda

The standoff widened when Congress sought scrutiny of a recent India-US trade agreement praised by the Prime Minister.

The party questioned why the announcement came from the US President and raised concerns about its possible impact on farmers, domestic industries, and India’s strategic autonomy. Congress General Secretary K C Venugopal moved an adjournment motion demanding a detailed parliamentary discussion, especially amid reports that India may have agreed to stop purchasing Russian oil.

Despite the disruptions, legislative business remains scheduled. A Motion of Thanks was moved by Sarbananda Sonowal and seconded by Tejasvi Surya, with 18 hours allocated for discussion. In the Rajya Sabha, the motion was moved by BJP MP Sadanand Master.

As per the List of Business, MPs Jair Parkash and Balashowry Vallabhaneni are set to table several Public Accounts Committee reports for 2025–26. These include reports on punctuality in train operations, irregularities related to the Overseas Citizenship of India card scheme and Indian cultural centres abroad, and follow-up action on recommendations linked to the Performance Audit of the Agriculture Crop Insurance Scheme.

The Motion of Thanks follows President Droupadi Murmu’s address to the joint sitting of Parliament on January 28, which marked the beginning of the Budget Session.

With Prime Minister Modi expected to speak later today, attention is now on whether his reply can help restore order in a House weighed down by deep political divisions.

Drew Barrymore says she’d never date a man in his 20s: ‘It just feels wrong’

Drew Barrymore opens up about modern dating, motherhood, and why dating men in their 20s is a hard no for her.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Hollywood actor Drew Barrymore has made it clear that dating someone significantly younger is not on her radar. The 50-year-old actress recently admitted that she can’t imagine being romantically involved with a man in his 20s and she doesn’t mince words about why.

A candid dating chat on her talk show

The conversation unfolded during a Drew’s News segment on The Drew Barrymore Show, where Barrymore was joined by co-host Ross Mathews and Food Network star Sunny Anderson. What began as a light-hearted discussion about dating quickly turned into an honest take on modern romance.

Mathews, who married Wellinthon García in 2022, reminded viewers that dating is meant to be enjoyable. Barrymore, however, wasn’t so optimistic.

“Can you tell the men I go on dates with that?” she joked, adding that her recent dating experiences haven’t exactly been smooth. “I feel like they missed the memo.”

‘I have children, it feels wrong now’

Things took a sharper turn when Anderson asked whether Barrymore had considered dating men in their 20s. The 50 First Dates star shut the idea down immediately.

“No,” Barrymore said bluntly. “I’m totally grossed out by that. I have children, and it just feels wrong now.”
Barrymore is a mother to two daughters, aged 13 and 11, whom she shares with ex-husband Will Kopelman.

Motherhood, she explained, has fundamentally reshaped how she views relationships and boundaries.

A differing take on age-gap dating

While Barrymore wasn’t sold on the idea, Anderson offered a contrasting perspective, revealing that she had dated younger men in her 40s and enjoyed it.

The discussion sparked some playful banter, with Mathews asking Anderson whether she was in her 30s or 40s at the time. Anderson clarified she was in her 40s and described the experience as carefree, adding that she was upfront about not seeking anything serious.

What Drew really wants from dating now

For Barrymore, however, dating today comes with a longer checklist. She shared that she now prefers to get important conversations out of the way early, everything from political views to personal values and even TV preferences.

“It’s about weeding people out sooner,” she implied, emphasizing that emotional compatibility matters more than casual fun at this stage of her life.

An ongoing conversation about modern romance

BJP-JD(S) MLAs’ day-and-night protest in K’taka Assembly continues; lawmakers take morning walk, sing bhajans

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal(Secular) continued their day-and-night protest at the Vidhana Soudha on Wednesday, demanding the resignation of Excise Minister R.B. Thimmapur over the alleged excise scam.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal(Secular) continued their day-and-night protest at the Vidhana Soudha on Wednesday, demanding the resignation of Excise Minister R.B. Thimmapur over the alleged excise scam.

The BJP-JD(S) legislators camped overnight at the Vidhana Soudha and spent the night inside the Assembly. Some leaders, including BJP state President B.Y. Vijayendra and Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka, went for a morning walk within the premises.

Earlier, LoP R. Ashoka, BJP State President and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra, and JD(S) floor leader C.B. Suresh Babu addressed a joint press conference in Bengaluru and announced the commencement of the protest on Tuesday night.

The legislators held posters inside the Assembly demanding the resignation of Excise Minister R.B. Thimmapur, alleging a Rs 6,000-crore scam in the Excise Department. Later, they gathered to sing devotional songs and then slept on the floor of the House. Photos and videos of BJP and JD(S) leaders sleeping on the floor went viral on social media.

After freshening up, the legislators gathered at the lounge, had tea, and discussed the future course of action. The protest was resumed after the morning walk, with BJP and JD(S) legislators sitting on the entry steps of the Assembly and raising slogans demanding the Excise Minister’s resignation. They also sang songs and raised “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” slogans.

BJP MLA Channabasappa sang a devotional song, and legislators, including Vijayendra, Ashoka, and Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Arvind Bellad, joined him.

Earlier, while addressing the media, Ashoka had claimed that, for the first time in Karnataka’s history, liquor associations themselves have alleged a Rs 6,000 crore scam in the Excise Department. He further alleged that the Excise Minister was collecting between Rs 250 crore and Rs 300 crore every month. According to him, Rs 2 crore was allegedly collected for each Deputy Commissioner’s post and Rs 10 lakh even for constable-level postings.

He also referred to an audio recording in which a Deputy Commissioner allegedly stated that a “cut” had to be paid to ministers, and pointed out that a complaint had been filed against the minister with the Lokayukta.

“Despite all this, the minister is asking for proof, and the entire government, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who also holds the finance portfolio, is backing him. This indicates that a huge amount of money is reaching the Congress high command. For elections, this massive Rs 6,000 crore collection has taken place. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated that Rs 700 crore from Karnataka was sent for the Maharashtra elections,” Ashoka alleged.

“We are staging an overnight dharna and will continue the protest until Excise Minister Thimmapur resigns. If he does not resign, we will directly allege that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has a share in the scam,” he said.

In a tragic incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad, three minor sisters lost their lives after jumping off the ninth floor of their residential building in the early hours of Wednesday, reportedly after their parents objected to the three sisters’ excessive online gaming. As per reports, the three minor sisters used to play online task-based games. The incident took place around 2 am last night at Bharat City Society under Tila Mod Police Limits in the Loni area.

The police found a note in the case at the residence of the three minor girls. From the suicide note, it is clear that the three girls were influenced by Korean culture, said the police. However, no particular app was named.

After reading the suicide note, the father of the minors, Chetan Kumar, said, “They had told me, ‘Papa, we cannot leave Korean. Korean is our life. Korean is everything to us. You cannot separate us from it. We will give up our lives.’ I have just seen the suicide note. This is very tragic.” He appealed to all parents to be careful and to ensure that children do not become so deeply attached to games.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police, Atul Kumar Singh, stated that the three deceased minor girls have been identified as Nishika (16), Prachi (14), and Pakhi (12). ACP added, “Today, around 2:15 AM, information was received that three girls had jumped from the balcony of the 9th floor of Flat No. 907, Tower B1, in Bharat City… On reaching the spot, it was found that the three girls were dead on the ground floor…”

After speaking to the family, DCP Trans-Hindon, Nimish Patil confirmed that the girls were troubled after their parents somewhat restricted them from using the phone for the past few days. He added, “because of that, the three sisters took this decision…”

According to police, the whole family was present in the house at the time of the incident, but they were asleep as the incident occurred at 2 am on Wednesday. Probe is underway.

As per an eyewitness who had called the police, one of them planned to jump, and the others fell while trying to save her. He stated, “I saw all three of them jumping… It happened at around 2 AM…I called the police… ”

Shehzad Poonawalla’s mother injured in Pune hit-and-run: What the family has alleged

Shehzad Poonawalla has alleged that his mother was deliberately hit by a car in Pune and left seriously injured, as the family seeks swift police action.

Statesman News Service | Mumbai |

BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla has said his mother was seriously injured after being hit by a car in Pune in what he described as a “deliberate” act. The driver fled the spot, leaving her critically hurt.

The incident took place on Tuesday. According to the family, she was rushed to hospital and is expected to undergo surgery. No official police statement has been issued so far.

Sharing details on X, Poonawalla said the impact was intentional and appealed for swift action.

“A few hours ago, an extremely disgusting human being ran his car over my mother deliberately — leaving her seriously injured and ran away. She will be undergoing a surgery very soon. Kindly pray for her,” he wrote.

He described his mother as a gentle and compassionate person and said the incident had shaken him deeply.

“My mother is one of the kindest and nicest human beings and for her to be subjected to this at this age makes my blood boil and my heart sink,” he added.

CCTV clip surfaces; family seeks arrest of accused

Poonawalla tagged the Pune City Police, the city’s police commissioner, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and the Chief Minister’s Office, urging authorities to identify and arrest the accused.

In a related post, his brother, political analyst Tehseen Poonawalla, shared what he said was CCTV footage of the incident. He claimed the visuals show their mother being struck while she was standing at a distance from the car.

“My mom a senior citizen went for a drive with my driver and executive assistant & was waiting on the side while they were tanking up the gas in our car, someone just hit her (seems deliberate) and ran away!” he wrote.

Tehseen said a police complaint would be filed and efforts were underway to trace the vehicle involved.

“Will be filing a police complaint and getting the car number! If u see the video Pune Police, my mom is standing very far so how can someone hit her?” he said.

He later confirmed that she had suffered a fractured hip and would need surgery.

“Her hip is broken and she has been undergo surgery! We have got her admitted to hospital. If her vitals are okay surgery tomorrow. Seriously this is crazy!” he wrote.

In another update, he said she would require a rod implant for life.

“Mom will have to undergo hip surgery and a rod for life! Very infuriating and heartbreaking! Spoke to the Jt Commissioner Police and DCP. What a disgusting rotten piece who either has done this deliberately or decided to run away after hitting a senior citizen!”

Police are yet to issue a formal statement. The investigation is expected to continue.

India–US trade deal: Washington cites New Delhi’s USD 500bn investment pledge; Congress questions the math

The India–US trade deal promises energy shifts and major investments, but Congress has questioned whether the USD 500 billion figure claimed by Washington is realistic.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

The White House has welcomed a newly announced trade agreement with India, calling it a major economic win for the United States.

At the centre of Washington’s claim is a sweeping pledge: a shift away from Russian oil, higher US energy purchases, and a proposed USD 500 billion investment by India across key American sectors.

But in New Delhi, the numbers are already under scrutiny. The opposition has asked whether the scale being projected by the US administration is even feasible.

The agreement, announced by US President Donald Trump, is being framed as part of Washington’s broader push to rebalance trade, protect domestic industry, and expand export markets. Indian ministers, meanwhile, have called it a growth-defining opportunity, while insisting sensitive sectors remain protected.

What the White House says the deal delivers

Speaking at the White House, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had committed to ending purchases of Russian oil and turning to US energy suppliers.

“India committed to not only no longer purchasing Russian oil, but buying oil from the United States, also perhaps from Venezuela too, which will now have a direct benefit on the US and American people,” she told reporters.

Leavitt also said India had pledged USD 500 billion in investments into the US economy, covering transportation, energy, and agriculture.

“PM Modi committed to an investment of USD 500 billion into the United States, including energy, transportation, and agricultural products,” she said.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer later told CNBC that the agreement would preserve certain tariff protections for the US while opening Indian markets in selected sectors.

“We’ll continue to maintain some level of tariff against India,” Greer said, while confirming that New Delhi had agreed to reduce duties on American agricultural products, manufactured goods, chemicals, and medical devices.

At the same time, he said India would continue to safeguard sensitive farm sectors.

“India, like every country in the world, including the United States, has some protection around some certain key areas in agriculture, and they will continue to control that,” Greer said.

Congress questions figures; government calls it future-defining

The scale of the deal has been questioned by Congress MP Manish Tewari, who argued that the numbers cited by Washington do not align with existing trade data.

In a post on X, Tewari wrote: “The math in @POTUS @realDonaldTrump @WhiteHouse social Media post on the purported Indo-US Trade Deal simply just doesn’t add up. If you look at the figures below, where can or does the USD 500 Billion figure come from? India exports to US in 2024 was USD 79.44 Billion dollars and imports from US were USD 38.99 Billion USD.”

He also questioned whether India had committed to sourcing a dominant share of its imports from the US.

“From 39 billion USD approximately to go to USD 500 billion in imports will be quite a journey. India’s total imports between April-December 2025 were 730.84 billion USD. Have we committed to sourcing 3/4 th of our imports from one single source- US? That seems to be the assertion of @realDonaldTrump? Government must answer!”

The government has pushed back against the criticism. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal described the agreement as a “future-defining deal” that would open new opportunities for Indian businesses.

“This trade agreement is the best possible deal for India when compared to competing countries,” he said, adding that sensitive areas of the economy had been protected.

Goyal said exporters, technology firms, investors, and labour-intensive industries stood to benefit, pointing to what he described as widespread enthusiasm across sectors.
