J&K Assembly adjourned amid uproar over LoP’s ‘Pir Panjal’ remarks

Amid noisy scenes over the ‘Pir Panjal’ region, remarks of Leader of Opposition (LoP) Sunil Sharma, the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly was on Wednesday adjourned for 15 minutes by Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather.

The ruckus started shortly after the Question Hour, with Congress MLA Iftikhar Ahmad demanding an apology from BJP leader Sunil Sharma over his remarks in an interview with a news portal that there was no term as ‘Pir Panjal’.
Several legislators, including independents, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, and ministers Satish Sharma and Javed Ahmad, joined the Congress legislator in raising the demand for an apology, which BJP legislators strongly opposed.

While BJP MLAs stood in support of their leader, Sharma remained seated as the deputy CM demanded an unconditional written apology, asserting that the House would not be allowed to function otherwise.

Speaker Rather made futile efforts to pacify the angry legislators, but many of them tried to move towards the Well of the House and came face-to-face. Later, he adjourned the House for 15 minutes.

Talking to reporters outside the Assembly, Congress MLA said that unless the LoP tendered an apology, they would not allow the House to run. “He has disrespected the people of Pir Panjal,” he said, referring to the Poonch and Rajouri districts.
He said the people of Pir Panjal have laid down their lives while defending the borders, and he has “insulted the martyrs” of Pir Panjal.

National Conference MLA Aijaz Jan also demanded an apology from the LoP on the Floor of the House. “He has hurt people. We will be on protests till he apologises. We will not tolerate insults to those people defending the borders of this country,” he said.

Later, the BJP legislators staged a sit-in outside the Assembly, alleging that they were not being allowed to speak in the House.

Mismatched Season 4: The coffee cups are back. The feelings are back. And yes, the heartbreak might be back too. Netflix has officially announced the fourth and final season of ‘Mismatched’, and fans are already emotional.

The update dropped on February 3, 2026, and it feels like a soft punch to the heart in the best way.

Netflix shared a first-look video that instantly sent fans into nostalgia mode. In the clip, Prajakta Koli and Rohit Saraf are seen sitting quietly at Marine Drive in Mumbai. Not just any spot. This is the ‘exact same place’ where season 3 ended. No loud dialogues. No dramatic music. Just Rishi and Dimple, side by side staring at the sea like two people with unfinished business.

The announcement was enough to make fans scream, cry, and text their group chats. After all ‘Mismatched’ has always been about more than just love.

A quick recap of Mismatched Season 3

Season 3 of ‘Mismatched’ premiered on Netflix on December 13, 2024. The season surprised viewers by jumping three years ahead from where season 2 ended. The characters were older, slightly wiser. They carried emotional baggage.

The storyline had twists and turns. But what truly stood out was the bond between Rishi and Dimple. Their love story, full of misunderstandings and missed chances, once again became the main reason fans stayed hooked.

What the makers say about the final chapter

Netflix India teased the final season earlier in May, sharing a post that read: “We’ve cried, we’ve screamed, we’ve shipped. Let’s meet for a cold coffee non-date, one last time?”

The makers added that season 4 is about second chances. According to them, this season explores what happens when two people who thought they had said goodbye are pulled back into each other’s lives.

Rishi and Dimple have grown, changed, and chosen different paths. But the story still has more to say.

Mismatched Season 4 cast

‘Mismatched’ season 4 is directed by Divyang Thakkar and created by Gazal Dhaliwal, with Ronnie Screwvala producing the show.

Along with Prajakta Koli and Rohit Saraf, the final season will feature Rannvijay Singha, Vidya Malvade, Ahsaas Channa, Taaruk Raina, Muskkaan Jaaferi, Abhinav Sharma, and others reprising their roles.

Mismatched Season 4 release date

Season 4 is expected to release sometime in 2026, and while the wait is painful, fans know it will be worth it.

One last coffee. One last conversation. And, one last chance for Rishi and Dimple.

Chhattisgarh Maoist involved in killing of civilians & IED blasts surrenders

During the surrender, the cadre- Sukhram Markam, also laid down an SLR Rifle, 12 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, and other articles.

Statesman News Service | BHUBANESWAR |

An Area Committee Member (ACM)-ranked underground CPI (Maoist) cadre, a native of Sukma district in Chhattisgarh, on Wednesday shunned the path of violence and joined the mainstream in a blow to the banned outfit in Odisha’s Malkangiri district.

During the surrender, the cadre- Sukhram Markam, also laid down an SLR Rifle, 12 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, and other articles.

The surrendered cadre renounced violence, severed all links with extremist activities, and opted to join the mainstream of society, expressing faith in the democratic process.

This surrender of an operational and ideological CPI (Maoist) leader marks a final blow to CPI (Maoist) cadres in Malkangiri, making the Malkangiri District Naxal-free.

Markam was involved in a series of violent activities, including orchestrating an IED blast to target security forces and the abduction and killing of civilians on suspicion of being police informers.

Constant appeals made by the Odisha government urging CPI (Maoist) cadres to return to the mainstream by shunning the violence and participating in the development and welfare of the State and its people are yielding dividends, with several outlawed red rebels returning to the mainstream in recent months.

Increased and sustained pressure by security forces, disillusionment with the ideology, a leadership vacuum, and a lack of local support, besides the new surrender-cum-rehabilitation policy of the Odisha government, have all driven the CPI (Maoist) cadres to sever their association with the outlawed outfit.

This decision reflects a deliberate and pragmatic acceptance of the Government’s surrender and rehabilitation policy and a clear renunciation of violent extremism in favour of development, peace, and a law-abiding life.

As per the Odisha Government’s New Surrender-cum-Rehabilitation Policy, surrendered cadre would receive several benefits, including a total reward amount of Rs 21 lakh.

Additional benefits like the provision of a house under Antyodaya Gruha Yojana (AG), one-time marriage incentive of Rs 25,000 are being extended to the surrendered Naxals as per the state’s rehabilitation and reintegration policy.

The Odisha State Police Department also assured that all entitled benefits will be provided promptly, enabling the surrendered cadres to rebuild their lives with dignity and security.

Director General of Police Y B Khurania also appealed to the CPI (Maoist) cadres and leaders to come out and join the mainstream society and assured that all underground CPI (Maoist) cadres who opt to surrender will receive full support, protection, and assistance under the Odisha Government’s comprehensive rehabilitation and reintegration programme, enabling them to rebuild their lives in a peaceful, dignified, and meaningful manner.

Two Pakistani terrorists of JeM outfit killed in gunfight with security forces in Udhampur forests

In a major achievement for the security forces, two Pakistani terrorists of the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) outfit were killed on Wednesday in an ongoing encounter in the Basantgarh area of Udhampur district.

Statesman News Service | Jammu |

In a major achievement for the security forces, two Pakistani terrorists of the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) outfit were killed on Wednesday in an ongoing encounter in the Basantgarh area of Udhampur district. These terrorists were holed up in a natural cave in the Basantgarh forests since Tuesday afternoon.

The joint operation ‘KIYA’ was being carried out by the Army, the CRPF, and the J&K Police.

Confirming neutralisation of the two terrorists, the White Knight Corps of the Indian Army said, “Based on specific intelligence input provided by J&K Police, troops of Counter Infiltration Force (CIF) Delta, White Knight Corps planned and executed a focused joint counter-terror operation in the general area of Jophar forest, Basantgarh (J&K) in coordination with JKP and CRPF reinforcing the cordon, ensuring effective area domination to prevent escape of terrorists”.

“Contact with terrorists was established yesterday, and since then, terrorists were prevented from breaking contact. Following a calibrated and coordinated response, two terrorists have been successfully neutralised. The operation highlighted seamless inter-agency coordination, tactical precision and high standards of professionalism. Operation concluded successfully. Area remains under surveillance”.

After the overnight lull, a fresh exchange of fire and deafening explosions rocked the area around 7.30 pm when the holed-up terrorists attempted to flee under the cover of darkness.

Army reinforcements, including paratroopers and dog squads, were rushed in to further tighten the cordon.
Security forces, early this morning, prepared for a final assault on the two JeM terrorists, with no exchange of fire reported during the night.

Meanwhile, security agencies have been put on high alert after another Pakistani balloon was recovered in the Nad area of Samba district, raising concerns amid a series of similar incidents

India doubles down on exploration, mining of rare earths

The Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD), a constituent unit of DAE, is carrying out exploration and augmentation of minerals of rare earth group elements along the coastal and inland placer sands as well as in hard rock terrains in several potential geological domains of the country, informed the government.

As on January 28, 2026 the rare earth minerals resources estimated by AMD include 136 deposits of Beach Sand Minerals containing 13.15 million tonnes (Mt) of monazite (a mineral of Thorium and Rare Earths) occurring in the coastal beach, teri/red sands and inland alluvium in parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Jharkhand and West Bengal.

These deposits contain approximately 7.23 Mt in-situ Rare Earth Oxide (eq.) resources, said Minister of Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

Also, three deposits of rare-earth minerals in hard rocks in parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat containing 1.29 Mt in-situ Rare Earth Oxide (eq.) resources have been estimated.

According to the minister, the rare earth (RE) bearing ore, Monazite, is a prescribed substance due to its association with radioactive elements — uranium and thorium — and, therefore, mining, processing and refining is kept under government control.

India is one among three to four countries globally having capacity and capability in terms of Plant, technology and skilled work force in RE sector.

Indian resources are significantly lean with respect to grade and tied with radioactive elements making the extraction long, complex and expensive.

Further, Indian resource predominantly contain light rare earth elements.

While India has adequate rare-earth resources and capabilities for extraction and refining, commercial mining and processing of these minerals has been limited due to lack of adequate technology, absence of mid-stream and downstream industries in the REE value chain.

In November last year, the Union Cabinet has approved “Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnets” with a financial outlay of Rs. 7,280 crore to establish 6,000 Metric Tons per Annum (MTPA) of integrated Rare Earth Permanent Magnet (REPM) manufacturing in India.

Rahul Gandhi ups the ante, displays Gen Naravane’s ‘unpublished book’ on India-China standoff outside Parliament

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, displayed the book outside Parliament and accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of not fulfilling his responsibility during the India-China military standoff, which started along the Line of Actual Control in April-May 2020 in Ladakh.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, who triggered an uproar in Parliament on Monday with his references to the unpublished book of former Army Chief General MM Naravane, on Wednesday sought to up the ante.

The Leader of Opposition displayed the book outside Parliament and accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of not fulfilling his responsibility during the India-China military standoff, which started along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in April-May 2020 in Ladakh.

Rahul spoke to reporters outside Parliament and displayed the book, stating, “They are saying this book does not exist. This is Naravane ji’s book, while I have been told that I cannot quote from the book. The book carries a line of the PM, ‘do what you feel is right’…. Narendra Modi did not fulfil his responsibility.”

He added, “(Former) Army Chief General Naravane has clearly written in his book that he felt really alone, that he was abandoned by the entire establishment.”

Rahul further said that if PM Modi comes to Parliament today, he will hand over the book to him. “I don’t think the PM has the guts to come to the Lok Sabha today. Because if he comes, I’ll go physically and hand him this book.”

Rahul further claimed that the book, while not published in India, is available abroad.

“It’s available abroad, I think. It’s published abroad. The government is not allowing it to be published here. That’s what I believe. The book is available. You can imagine where the book has come from. You think about where it came from,” he stated.

Rahul’s fresh remarks came two days after he was stopped repeatedly in the Lok Sabha by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah, among others, from quoting from an unverified source.

Naravane’s memoir details the circumstances of the India-China military standoff in 2020, the actions of the People’s Liberation Army of China, and how Indian forces and the political establishment reacted. The excerpts from the book were published in an online portal, to which Rahul had referred in Parliament on Monday.

Mitchell has famously held on to everything from stage costumes and instruments to personal memorabilia, offering the film an unusually intimate foundation.

Celebrating a Lasting Cultural Legacy

A towering figure in American music, Mitchell has been a defining voice of California’s folk and rock movements for decades. Her influence was formally recognised in 2014, when SFJazz honoured her with a lifetime achievement award.

With Streep now confirmed and Mitchell actively shaping the narrative, anticipation is building for a biopic that promises to be as authentic as it is reverential.

Musk’s net worth soars past $800 billion after SpaceX‑xAI deal

US entrepreneur Elon Musk’s net worth surged past the $800 billion mark after SpaceX acquired his artificial‑intelligence firm xAI, making him the richest person in history by a wide margin.

IANS | New Delhi |

US entrepreneur Elon Musk’s net worth surged past the $800 billion mark after SpaceX acquired his artificial‑intelligence firm xAI, making him the richest person in history by a wide margin.

Musk’s net worth reached roughly $852 billion, almost $578 billion higher than the world’s second-wealthiest person, Google co-founder Larry Page, whose net worth is estimated at $281 billion.

The merger took the combined value of the company to $1.25 trillion and added about $84 billion to Musk’s fortune, according to reports.

Before the merger, Musk owned about 42 per cent of SpaceX which was valued at $800 billion and roughly 49 per cent of xAI, which was valued at $250 billion after a recent private fundraising round. Post‑merger, Musk’s stake in the combined entity touched 43 per cent, worth about $542 billion and SpaceX became Musk’s largest holding by a wide margin, the reports said.

Musk also retains about 12 per cent of Tesla, valued at approximately $178 billion, along with Tesla stock options, estimated at $124 billion. Further, in addition to these, Musk also receives a shareholder‑approved Tesla pay package up to $1 trillion in additional Tesla stock, before taxes over the next decade and the cost of unlocking restricted shares, if performance targets are met.

He crossed several wealth milestones in the past four months such as $500 billion, $600 billion and $700 billion, driven by SpaceX valuation gains and a Delaware Supreme Court ruling that restored his Tesla options.

Musk earlier said that SpaceX’s Starship will begin delivering the much more powerful V3 Starlink satellites to orbit in 2026, with each launch adding more than 20 times the capacity to the constellation as the current Falcon launches of the V2 Starlink satellites.

It will enable launches “every hour carrying 200 tons per flight” and ultimately lifting millions of tons to orbit and beyond, Musk has shared his plan.

Starship will also launch the next generation of direct-to-mobile satellites, which will deliver full cellular coverage everywhere on Earth, he added.

Rahul Gandhi’s ‘traitor’ remark for MoS Bittu triggers row; Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri calls it ‘a slur on Sikhs’

The Congress MP made the ‘traitor’ remark after the Union MoS Bittu commented on the Congress MPs protesting at the Makar Dwar of the Parliament. Bittu said, “They are sitting as if they won a war.”

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi and Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu were caught in a spat today outside Parliament. While Rahul Gandhi called Union MoS Bittu a traitor, Bittu hit back at Rahul Gandhi and referred to him and his party members as ‘desh ke dushman.’ What began as an exchange of remarks between the two leaders has triggered a huge political row as the Bharatiya Janata Party has referred to the traitor remark as an attack against the entire Sikh community.

The Congress MP made the ‘traitor’ remark after the Union MoS Bittu commented on the Congress MPs protesting at the Makar Dwar of the Parliament. Bittu said, “They are sitting as if they won a war.”

Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi said, “Here is a traitor walking right by. Look at the face…” Also, the Congress MP offered to shake hands with Bittu, saying, “Hello brother, my traitor friend.” He added that Bittu will come back to the Congress party. He said, “Don’t worry, you will come back (to Congress).” However, Bittu refused to shake hands with Rahul.

The verbal altercation broke out when the Union MoS Bittu passed by Rahul, while he was standing at Makar Dwar with some protesting Congress MPs. The Congress party today staged a protest against the suspension of eight party MPs from the Lok Sabha for the remainder of the Budget session. The eight MPs were suspended yesterday for violating rules and “throwing papers on the chair” following uproar in the House over Rahul Gandhi’s mentioning of the 2020 standoff with China in Ladakh.

The protesting MPs were seen holding posters reading “PM is compromised.”

‘Sadak ka gunda,’ Bittu slams Rahul

Responding to Rahul Gandhi’s traitor remark, Ravneet Singh Bittu called the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha a ‘Sadak ka gunda.’ Bittu said, “He (Rahul Gandhi) has good fitness, but I too am strong. But this is not what we do in politics. We have to speak with decorum using Parliamentary language. He is exposed today. He stooped to hooliganism…”

Bittu also called himself the biggest patriot and mentioned that his father sacrificed himself for the Sikhs. He claimed that the Congress party and the Gandhi family had set Punjab on fire. He further attacked the Congress party for targeting thousands of Sikhs and Punjabis and killing them.

He slammed Rahul Gandhi for his comments, saying, “If Rajiv Gandhi is called ‘shaheed’, we should also say shaheed-e-azam Sardar Beant Singh. I also come from that family, this is my pain. Grandson of one martyr was fine as long as I was with him. Now that I am in the BJP, he is using such words for me.”

Bittu alleged that Rahul Gandhi considers himself to be the owner of this country. He said, “What does he think of himself? He extended his hand towards me as if he is an emperor.”

On his ‘desh ke dushman’ remark, Bittu said, “I might not belong to the Gandhi family, but I have a turban on my head. So, when he offered to shake hands with me, I said ‘aap log toh desh ke gaddar ho, desh ke dushman ho’ who speaks against the Army and the nation everyday.

He went on to call the Gandhi family the murderers of Sikhs and thereby refused to shake hands with Rahul Gandhi.

‘It’s a slur on Sikhs,’ says Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri strongly condemned the traitor remark by Rahul Gandhi for MoS Bittu and called it a slur on the entire Sikh community. He said, “The way Rahul Gandhi has addressed parliamentarian and respected Sikh leader Sardar Ravneet Singh Bittu, as a ‘Traitor’ crosses all boundaries of civility, decency and dignity.”

Puri stated that such a remark by the LoP reflects that the Congress MP holds a deep grudge against Bittu for choosing the policies of Vikas espoused by the Modi-led government over the directionless Congress. He emphasised that nothing can ever justify such a slur against a proud Sikh whose own grandfather was slain by terrorists. He said, “Calling someone a ‘traitor friend’ means he has betrayed his country. While Shri Gandhi may have many friends who are traitors, Shri Bittu is certainly not one of them.”

Sirsa attacks Congress, demands action

Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa also slammed Rahul Gandhi for calling Bittu a traitor. He said, “The kind of words used by Rahul Gandhi against a Sikh Minister, calling a Sikh Sardar ‘traitor’ – I strongly condemn this. This is very shameful.”

He strongly disapproved of the usage of such words for a Sikh leader and stressed that if there is a traitor, it is Rahul Gandhi. He said, “Sikh Sardar can never be a traitor. Reflecting such a mindset and using such words for Sikhs, says that Congress mindset has not changed even to this day.

Recalling the attack on Sri Darbar Sahib, Sirsa attacked the Gandhi family and said, “If there is a traitor, it is the Gandhi family, which attacked Sri Darbar Sahib with tanks, which harmed Akal Takht Sahib, which burned the innocent Sikhs alive. We strongly condemn the sin you have committed, the insult you hurled at Sikhs, and the foul words you used for Sikhs. We will not tolerate this.”

Sirsa has demanded that the Lok Sabha Speaker take immediate action against LoP Rahul Gandhi.

WPL: We’ve plenty of time to tinker a little bit & come back stronger next year, says GG head coach Klinger

Head coach Michael Klinger felt the Gujarat Giants’ WPL 2026 season demonstrated noticeable progress, despite an overall sense of unfinished goals, as the side concluded their campaign with a loss to Delhi Capitals in the Eliminator on Tuesday.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Head coach Michael Klinger felt the Gujarat Giants’ WPL 2026 season demonstrated noticeable progress, despite an overall sense of unfinished goals, as the side concluded their campaign with a loss to Delhi Capitals in the Eliminator on Tuesday.

Securing second place on the points table marked a positive advancement and showed that the Giants maintained composure in close matches throughout the league phase. However, it also identified areas for improvement, especially during the most critical moments.

They achieved a clean sweep of UP Warriorz, ending a long winless streak against the Mumbai Indians, and narrowly defeated Delhi Capitals twice in last-over finishes, with Sophie Devine’s calm under pressure playing a key role.

The margins of victory were often very close, and their confidence was clear, even though losses to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in both encounters prevented a higher league-stage position. As Klinger noted, the season ended in disappointment once again, with the Giants missing out on successive Eliminators in 2025 and 2026.

“Yeah, certainly, finishing outright second this year is a huge improvement. Probably the two finals (Eliminators) we played, both last year and this year, we just didn’t play at our best. We spoke about it today in our team meeting – that when we play close to our best, we’re a chance to beat any team in this competition – and we just weren’t quite there today, in our batting and our bowling,” Klinger said, addressing the media after the Giants’ loss to DC.

Nonetheless, the overall evaluation stayed positive. “We’ve learned a lot about our squad this year. Whether we won the final or not, or the championship or not, we’re pretty clear on the areas we need to improve next year. We’ve got plenty of time – about 10 months now – to watch more cricket from both local and overseas players, tinker a little bit, and hopefully come back bigger and stronger next year.

“To qualify two years in a row, there are always teams who would much prefer to be where we are than already gone home. So we’re satisfied with that, but at the same time we’re aiming for bigger things. It didn’t happen this year, but we’ll keep giving ourselves a chance by qualifying, and hopefully next year we’ll play stronger cricket in the bigger games,” he said.

Klinger expressed optimism about the Indian talent in the squad, viewing this season as a foundation rather than a ceiling.

“I think it’s about players taking the next step. Anushka (Sharma) had a good season for her first year. She got a lot of good starts, which for a young player is fantastic. The next step for her is realising how good she is, and that she can be a 300-plus run WPL player going forward. She’s a fantastic player and person, and she’s probably a big chance to play for India before next year’s WPL. I hope she does, because that international experience will help her for us next year as well.

“I thought Bharti (Fulmali) started the season really well and played some fantastic innings. Potentially, the lower bounce here (in Vadodara) didn’t quite suit her, so she couldn’t get going. It’s more about belief – that they don’t just have to contribute, but can dominate, like some of the other Indian batters in the competition. If they come in with that attitude next year, they’ll be fine. Obviously, we’ll have Yastika (Bhatia) next year, touch wood, if she’s fit and healthy, which will add another quality Indian player,” said Klinger.

Klinger discussed effort, balance, and potential improvements from a bowling perspective. He highlighted the narrow victories over DC as proof of the team’s fighting spirit, which they highly value.

“The two wins against Delhi showed our fighting spirit – even when we were up against it in the last six balls. We talk about that a lot. In our team room, we have a big sign that says ‘fight’. We’ll certainly speak to all the players – maybe not tonight with emotions running high, but over time. Everyone’s going back to domestic cricket, and there are areas everyone can work on, whether it’s our quicks or our spinners.

“I think our fast bowlers were really good when the ball was swinging. The next step for them as T20 bowlers is what their go-to option is when the ball stops swinging. That’s something they can work on. Happy Kumari is a fantastic young bowler. I heard she didn’t get picked for an upcoming domestic team, which I find amazing, because there aren’t many with her pace, line and length. I hope she keeps getting opportunities, because she’s got something special and she’ll be back with us next year, and we can really unleash her,” Klinger said.

Regarding the spinners, who played a smaller role, Klinger said, “Our spinners didn’t get as many overs this year – TK (Tanuja Kanwer) and Raj (Rajeshwari Gayakwad) – but that was more about our team make-up. We had a lot of all-rounders: Ash (Gardner), Georgia (Wareham), Sophie Devine. We didn’t have Georgia last year. With three overseas all-rounders bowling, it wasn’t a reflection on the spinners, just how we balanced our overs.”

While reiterating his belief that India possess the experience, skill and balance to succeed in a high-pressure tournament, Dhoni cautioned that dew often turns the toss into a decisive element and can create uneven contests, regardless of team strength.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has flagged dew as a key factor that could influence India’s campaign at the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, saying changing conditions can undermine even the most meticulous planning in white-ball cricket.

While reiterating his belief that India possess the experience, skill and balance to succeed in a high-pressure tournament, Dhoni cautioned that dew often turns the toss into a decisive element and can create uneven contests, regardless of team strength.

“What worries me? Again, I hate dew. Dew changes a lot of things. So, even when I was playing, something that really scared me was dew.

“Where the toss becomes crucial and all of that. If we are playing 10 matches with some of the best teams, we will come out as winners more often than not. If the conditions remain neutral,” Dhoni said.

The two-time World Cup-winning skipper
expressed confidence in India’s prospects at the marquee tournament. India enter the tournament as the defending champions, and their batting line-up is packed with some of the biggest six-hitters in the world, and in Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakravarthy, they have two of the best bowlers around.

Dhoni underlined that India’s strength lies in how well players manage pressure situations and execute clearly defined roles.

He noted that the side remains in a constant match-ready mindset, whether batting or bowling, which gives them a significant edge over their rivals.

“It’s one of the most dangerous teams. You know, they would have already started batting or bowling. But what all is needed in a good team? Everything is there.”

“They have the experience. Especially when it comes to this format, the experience is vast. They have played under pressure. Whoever is playing whatever roles they are playing in the team, they have been in that situation for a considerable period of time,” Dhoni said at an event.

Dhoni also stressed the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket, where a single poor outing or an exceptional performance by the opposition can quickly alter the course of a match or tournament.

“The problem is when some of your players have a day off and somebody from the opposition has a brilliant day, and it can happen in T20 cricket. So that’s the time – whether in the league stage or the knockout stage, that’s where all the praying is needed. You know, nobody should get injured,” he said.

“Whatever roles are given, people should accomplish their roles for the team. And if that’s the case, I don’t want to jinx it, but it’s one of the most dangerous teams,” he concluded.

‘Agriculture and dairy interests safeguarded’: Piyush Goyal in Parliament on India-US trade deal as Oppn creates ruckus

Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, on Wednesday asserted in the Lok Sabha that the Modi government has been able to safeguard the interests of sensitive sectors like agriculture and dairy in the trade deal finalised with the US.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, on Wednesday made a statement in the Lok Sabha on the India-United States trade deal. As the minister rose to deliver his remarks on the deal announced on Monday night by US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Opposition started raising slogans in the lower house, making it difficult to hear what Goyal was saying.

The minister said the India-US trade deal, under which Washington has reduced tariffs imposed on New Delhi to 18 per cent from 50 per cent, will help promote Viksit Bharat and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.

“I would like to emphasise the fact that this tariff is lower than the US tariff on several competitor nations…” Goyal told the Lok Sabha, adding that India’s labour-intensive sectors will get an export boost in the US market after the agreement.

The minister asserted that the Modi government has been able to safeguard the interests of sensitive sectors like agriculture and dairy in the trade deal with the US.

“I would like to reiterate to this august House that in the sector of fertiliser and agriculture, India’s sensitiveness has been taken care of. This agreement will provide new opportunities to small and medium businesses, MSMEs, industrialists, skilled workers and industries. This will simplify the reach to advanced technologies and help in realising India’s ‘Make in India for the World’, ‘Design in India for the World’ and ‘Innovate in India for the World’,” the minister stressed.

‘Trade deal details to be released soon’

Talking about the deal broadly, the minister said the agreement will strengthen India-US ties and help in the journey towards a developed India.

“This historic and structural agreement is a major step towards strengthening India-US relations and advancing our journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047. This also reflects the strong connection between two of the biggest democratic nations in the world; they are natural partners and are working together for shared prosperity,” said the minister.

He also explained the next steps in the finalisation of the deal, adding that all details will be released soon.

“I would like to inform the MPs that with regard to the next course of action, both sides will work together to fulfil important processes related to the trade agreement and finalise the paperwork so that its full capability can be taken benefit of at the earliest. The details of the agreement will be announced soon after the conclusion of these processes,” he added.

What the minister said on Russian oil

The minister also addressed the question of Russian oil, stating that India diversifies its energy sources, keeping in mind the interests of its population.

“I want to make it clear that, as the government has said several times, safeguarding the energy requirements of 140 crore Indians is the biggest priority of the government. In line with an objective market, circumstances and changing geopolitical situation, diversifying energy sources is the basis of our work style,” he stated.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla adjourned the house till 2 pm amid continued Opposition protests, soon after the minister finished making his statement.

The Opposition had been demanding that the government release details of the deal, which has been announced, but so far not signed on paper. The Opposition, led by the Congress, alleged the Modi government had compromised on critical sectors like agriculture and dairy.

Priyanka Chopra made an unusual request to SS Rajamouli for ‘Varanasi’; he agreed and pulled Mahesh Babu into it

Priyanka Chopra is set to return to Indian cinema after seven years with SS Rajamouli’s epic ‘Varanasi’, where a simple request to dance turned into a major film moment. The action-fantasy also stars Mahesh Babu and blends mythology, time travel, and massive scale ahead of its 2027 release.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

The phone rings. The director on the other end is SS Rajamouli. The film is massive. The comeback is long overdue. And Priyanka Chopra has just one thing on her mind. “Will you make me dance?”

That one sweet, slightly dangerous request didn’t just bring Priyanka back to Indian cinema after years away. It also dragged her co-star Mahesh Babu straight onto the dance floor, changed the energy of the film, and added a musical heartbeat to one of the most ambitious Indian movies ever planned.

Welcome to ‘Varanasi’. This is the film where gods, time travel, epic action, giant screens, and a lot of dancing collide.

A comeback that starts with a dance demand

Priyanka Chopra is officially returning to Indian cinema after seven long years, and she is doing it in the most Priyanka way possible by asking for a dance number before even saying yes.

When SS Rajamouli first called her about ‘Varanasi’, he pitched the character, praised its depth, and tried to sell the scale. Priyanka listened patiently. Then she dropped her condition.

She told him she hadn’t danced in an Indian film for years and desperately missed that connection with Indian audiences. If she was coming back, she wanted to move to music again. Rajamouli agreed.

That’s when things got… intense.

“I should not have asked”: how the dance took over the set

Priyanka later laughed about her decision, admitting she may have underestimated Rajamouli’s enthusiasm. Once he agreed, he went all in.

Instead of one gentle dance, the film exploded into multiple high-energy sequences. Rehearsals stretched. Shooting days multiplied. The choreography became demanding.

And Mahesh Babu? He got pulled into it too.

According to Priyanka, Mahesh jokingly blamed her for his sudden dance-heavy schedule. She revealed how he kept telling her that all the extra dancing was her fault. What began as her personal wish quickly became one of the film’s most talked-about elements.

Mahesh Babu can’t stop humming the song

Mahesh Babu, however, seems secretly happy about it.

He has already confirmed that one major song featuring both of them has been shot. The tune, he says, refuses to leave his head. Priyanka apparently keeps singing it on set, much to everyone’s amusement.

The song exists only because Priyanka wanted to dance and now it’s shaping up to be one of the film’s biggest crowd-pleasers.

SS Rajamouli and Priyanka Chopra: a first-time pairing

‘Varanasi’ marks the first collaboration between Priyanka Chopra and SS Rajamouli, a director known for redefining scale with ‘Baahubali’ and ‘RRR’.

Interestingly, Rajamouli wasn’t fully confident at first.

He admitted that he had a small doubt about casting Priyanka. She had spent years working in Hollywood, doing international projects, and catering to a very different audience. He wondered if she would still connect naturally with Indian storytelling.

Those doubts vanished on day one.

Rajamouli described her as “a fish into water,” instantly comfortable, emotionally tuned in, fully committed. Whatever fear existed disappeared the moment the camera rolled.

Why Mandakini needed Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka plays Mandakini, the female lead in ‘Varanasi’, and the role is not easy.

Rajamouli needed an actor who could do two things without effort: dominate action scenes and break hearts in vulnerable moments. He searched long and hard but kept running into compromises, actors who could do one but not the other.

Then Priyanka’s name came up.

He has admired her performances for years, from emotionally fragile roles to fearless, powerful characters. Mandakini required both strength and softness, and Rajamouli felt Priyanka could deliver that balance naturally.

The character can fight, but she can also fall apart. And Priyanka, in his words, “really gives it all.”

A career built on vulnerability and power

Priyanka’s casting makes sense when you look at her journey.

She has delivered deeply emotional performances in films like ‘Barfi!’ and ‘Bajirao Mastani’. At the same time, she has led high-stakes action projects internationally, including spy and political thrillers.

That mix of vulnerability and force is exactly what ‘Varanasi’ demands.

Mahesh Babu as Rudhra and as Lord Rama

Mahesh Babu plays Rudhra, the film’s protagonist, in what is being described as one of his most layered roles yet.

SS Rajamouli has confirmed that Mahesh will portray Lord Rama in one of the film’s sequences, linking the story directly to the ‘Ramayana’. This revelation has fueled massive fan curiosity.

A teaser has already hinted that time travel is central to ‘Varanasi’.

Rajamouli moves the story across different worlds and timelines, one of which draws inspiration from the ‘Ramayana’. He believes these stories are not ancient relics but living emotions.

According to him, epic tales flow in Indian blood. The real challenge is not telling them, but living up to audience expectations while retelling them on such a massive scale.

Adding even more firepower to the cast is Prithviraj Sukumaran, who plays the antagonist.

Varanasi release date and where to watch

‘Varanasi’ is scheduled for a theatrical release on April 7, 2027.

Before that, Priyanka Chopra will appear in the Hollywood action thriller ‘The Bluff’, starring Karl Urban, which releases on Prime Video this month.

But her true big-screen homecoming happens next year, when she returns as Mandakini in a Telugu action fantasy epic designed to shake theatres.

Seven years later, she’s back. She’s dancing. And she’s doing it on the biggest stage possible.

A journey that began after ‘Valiant’

The composer had first announced plans to begin work on his second symphony in October last year. Following a performance at Dubai Opera, Ilaiyaraaja expressed gratitude to audiences for their overwhelming response to Valiant, his debut western classical symphony.

The Dubai concert was part of a broader global journey for Valiant, which Ilaiyaraaja has described as one of the highest achievements of his musical career.

A personal and spiritual beginning

In an earlier message shared during Deepavali, Ilaiyaraaja revealed that the new symphony would begin after observing his mother’s death anniversary, a moment of deep personal significance. He had also spoken about composing an additional piece titled Symphonic Dancers, alongside work on the symphony.

A historic first for Indian music

Ilaiyaraaja created history on March 8 last year when he became the first Indian composer to present a western classical symphony.

The landmark performance took place at London’s Eventim Apollo Theatre, with the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra joining him on stage. The collaboration marked a rare and celebrated convergence of Indian musical legacy and western classical tradition.
Taking the Symphony to the World

Upon returning to India, Ilaiyaraaja announced plans to take Valiant to audiences across the globe, confirming performances in 13 countries. Emphasising the importance of sharing the work with his listeners, he said that such a composition represents the pinnacle of musical expression.

As the second symphony edges closer to completion, anticipation continues to build around what promises to be yet another defining chapter in Ilaiyaraaja’s extraordinary career.

Ajit Pawar’s final phone call: What happened minutes before the Baramati plane crash

Call records reveal Ajit Pawar was speaking to a party worker minutes before the Baramati plane crash, highlighting his final moments and deepening the tragedy.

Statesman News Service | Mumbai |

Fresh details have surfaced about the final minutes before the plane crash in Baramati that killed Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and four others.

Call records released by the NCP show that Pawar was speaking to a party worker just nine minutes before the aircraft went down during landing on January 28.

The brief call, routine in nature, has since taken on deep emotional weight. When its audio was played at the party office in Baramati, several workers broke down. For many, it was the last time they heard his voice.

What happened during the final call

The last conversation was with Shreejit Pawar, an NCP worker from Katewadi.

Shreejit said he had messaged Ajit Pawar at 8.19 am about a local issue. There was no immediate response, likely because the aircraft was airborne.

As the plane descended and network connectivity returned, Pawar called him back at 8.37 am.

The call lasted about a minute. Shreejit raised a local concern. Pawar listened and responded in his familiar, brisk manner.

“I will call you back later,” he said, before ending the call to prepare for landing.

At 8.46 am, the aircraft crashed while attempting to land at Baramati.

Recalling the moment, Shreejit said, “I wasn’t so important that Dada had to call me right during landing, but it was his nature to reply to every message.”

During the conversation, Pawar spoke about political inclusion and representation.

“Child, we take all castes and religions along with us. We will work to give justice to everyone. I have given the Zilla Parishad candidature to the Mali community from the Supe constituency because it was an OBC reserved seat. We have done what other parties failed to do.”

Shreejit responded, “Fine, Dada. Whatever decision you feel is right is final. I will hang up now.”

That was the end of the call.

Pawar was scheduled to address four election meetings in Baramati that day. Even moments before landing, he remained engaged with party workers and local issues.

According to Shreejit, the audio clip was played publicly because colleagues wanted to hear his voice one last time.

As the state mourns, attention has now shifted to the aircraft’s black box and the investigation into a possible technical failure.

Rhea Chakraborty makes acting comeback with Netflix’s ‘Family Business’, starring Anil Kapoor and Vijay Varma

Big names, bigger drama

‘Family Business’ is not a small comeback project. The series stars Anil Kapoor and Vijay Varma in lead roles, with Rhea playing an important part. The show is likely to release later this year, though Netflix has not revealed an exact date yet.

The teaser gives a sharp first look at the power game. Anil Kapoor plays the boss of a massive multi-billion-dollar company. Vijay Varma appears as his loyal, hardworking employee.

Things fall apart when Kapoor’s character suddenly fires Varma triggering tense power struggle. Business, betrayal, ego, family clashes form heart of the story.

It’s serious drama with suits, secrets, silent wars.

A life turned upside down

Rhea’s life took a dramatic turn after the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput in 2020. What followed was intense public scrutiny and legal trouble. In September that year, she was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau after alleged drug-related chats were found on her phone. She was granted bail soon after, but the damage to her career and personal life was deep.

For years, Rhea stayed away from films and public events. Acting offers stopped. Silence took over.

Instead of disappearing, Rhea slowly rebuilt her life. She launched her own podcast and later surprised many by appearing as a gang leader on MTV Roadies.

Now, with ‘Family Business’, Rhea is finally returning to acting.
