Gross incompetence

A host of tricky queries need to be answered: how come only the SIMI activists escaped from captivity; were they provided assistance within the jail.

SNS |

That caption would possibly be the most restrained expression of the disturbing and contradictory impressions triggered by the jailbreak, and subsequent killing, of alleged SIMI activists from the central jail in Bhopal. Propriety would demand awaiting the findings of a probe into the matter but even a superficial assessment of events points, at best, to shameful ineptitude of the jail authorities; and what took place thereafter lends itself to suspicions even more sinister. Without getting bogged down in the political controversies the killings have generated it would be relevant to query the probe being limited to the National Investigation Agency without any judicial supervision or monitoring. The NIA, still “cutting its teeth”, has yet to acquire the status and credibility required of an agency that is both professional and politically independent. The “sins” of the CBI have proved contagious, and a judicial probe is too time-consuming to have any direct impact Rs so having the NIA function under the direction of a superior court might be one way out. It is, admittedly, both a national tragedy and a huge disgrace that there is no probe agency in the country that has attained, and sustained, the credentials that command the respect and confidence of society at large.
A host of tricky queries need to be answered: how come only the SIMI activists escaped from captivity; were they provided assistance within the jail, and then outside too; is it not curious that they did not split up to avoid detection; if they were provided clothing and footwear how is it that no vehicle was arranged for them to elude those who were on their trail? The video-recordings of the “encounter” raise another set of disturbing issues Rs do the police record encounters as a matter of standard procedure, were the “terrorists” provided arms by their supporters, and what efforts were made to re-capture some of them alive and not gun down all eight of them? Will the NIA have the mandate and competence to conduct such a thorough probe? For that agency, this inquiry could be a “make or break affair”. And there would be a lurking suspicion that sectarian factors could impede, or influence, the investigation, It is most disturbing that political and communal factors have come into play almost immediately, and sections of the BJP have tried exploiting prevailing emotions to link SIMI with Pakistan-based terror outfits, talk of Uri and Bhopal in the same breath, and regurgitate that “anti-national” charge against anyone questioning the role of the Madhya Pradesh police in the current controversy. Similarly, talk of “extra-judicial killings” is also to be condemned until evidence of such motivation is established. The truth often gets snuffed-out in such cross-fire.

An egg a day may cut stroke risk, says a study

One large egg boasts six grammes of high-quality protein and antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, found within the egg yolk, as well as vitamins E, D and A.

A daily dose of one egg daily – an affordable source of high quality protein – may cut the risk of suffering a stroke by 12 per cent, a new study has claimed.
One large egg boasts six grammes of high-quality protein and antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, found within the egg yolk, as well as vitamins E, D and A, researchers said.
Consumption of up to one egg per day had no association with coronary heart disease (CHD) and a 12 per cent reduction of stroke risk, they said.
Researchers reviewed studies dating back between 1982 and 2015, which evaluated relationships between egg intake and coronary heart disease (total of 2,76,000 subjects) and stroke (total of 3,08,000 subjects).
“Eggs do have many positive nutritional attributes, including antioxidants, which have been shown to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation,” said said Dominik Alexander of the EpidStat Institute in the US.
“They are also an excellent source of protein, which has been related to lower blood pressure,” said Alexander.
The study was published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

SRK was first cast in villainous roles in films like Baazigar, Darr and Anjan, but soon turned it into his favour and became the quintessential romantic hero.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hain, Dil To Pagal Hai, Mohabbatein, Veer Zara and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi… he continued to charm viewers with his “lover boy” image.

The Baadshah of Bollywood followed Amitabh Bachchan’s footsteps and soon hosted Kaun Banega Crorepati for a season in 2007.

Kejriwal regrets ex-soldier’s suicide, wants OROP implemented

IANS |

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday urged the government to immediately implement the OROP after a retired soldier committed suicide allegedly over the issue.
Describing as “very unfortunate” the suicide by Ram Kishan Grewal at a park here, Kejriwal quoted the 70-year-old as saying in his suicide note that he was taking his life in support of OROP's implementation.
The Aam Aadmi Party leader said in a video message that it was regrettable that despite dragging protests by ex-servicemen, the One Rank One Pension (OROP) had not been implemented.
And if this was true, then Prime Minister Narendra Modi had “lied” to the nation by claiming that OROP had been implemented, he said.
Grewal's son was quoted as telling journalists that his father called the family to say he was committing suicide as the government had failed to implement the OROP.
Grewal had been taking part in ongoing protests by ex-servicemen here in support of OROP.
The AAP leader also took on the government for reducing disability pension for soldiers and lowering the ranks of military personnel vis-a-vis civil servants.
Kejriwal urged the BJP and the government to stop doing politics over the army's surgical strikes on terrorist launch pads in Pakistani territory.

Maradona fears Argentina may be left out of 2018 World Cup

IANS |

Argentina may be left out of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, football legend Diego Maradona has said.

The former star player and national team coach said on Tuesday that there was no one looking out for his country's interests inside football's decision-making organisations, reports Xinhua.
Argentina “has no representative” either within the regional South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) or the world football body, the International Federation of Associated Football (FIFA), said Maradona.
“There's nobody to stand up for us. How am I going to not be worried with everything that's going on at the AFA,” the 56-year-old said, referring to the Argentine Football Association (AFA).
“They put whoever,” Maradona said of the AFA's selection. “Not only might we be left out of the Russia World Cup, but out of almost all of the world games, including the Under-15, Under-16, Under-18 and Under-20.”
His remarks came after FIFA ordered Bolivia to forfeit two South American qualifying matches for including an ineligible player. The decision helped Chile move up in the rankings, to fifth place with 16 points, and made it eligible to compete in the play-offs, while Argentina was bumped to sixth place.
Argentina's team had the same number of points, but a weaker goal average.
Maradona, who won two World Cups as team captain at the 1986 Mexico games and the 1990 Italy games, said “the AFA needs to be cleaned out” and officials made to “return the money they stole or jailed.”
“I fear for Argentina. (FIFA President Gianni) Infantino isn't going to hesitate from keeping those who are stealing out of football,” Maradona said in an interview with Fox Sports.
Argentina is set to play Brazil on November 10 in Belo Horizonte, and Colombia on November 15, in San Juan.

Using Facebook may help you live longer

Using Facebook may help you live longer

IANS |

If you are an avid Facebook user here is some good news. A new study says that using Facebook is associated with living longer as it serves to maintain and enhance an individual’s real-world social ties.

quot;Happily for almost all Facebook users what we found is balanced use and a lower risk of mortalityquot; said James Fowler Professor at the University of California-San Diego in a study of 12 million Facebook users.

Interacting online seems to be healthy when the online activity is moderate and complements interactions offline.

quot;It is only on the extreme end spending a lot of time online with little evidence of being connected to people otherwise that we see a negative associationquot; added William Hobbs post-doctoral fellow at Northeastern University.

The finding showed that those who are on Facebook live longer than those who are not and were nearly 12 per cent less likely to die than someone who doesn’t use the social networking website.nbsp;

People with average or large social networks in the top 50 to 30 per cent lived longer than those in the lowest 10.

Those on Facebook with highest levels of offline social integration — as measured by posting more photos which suggests face-to-face social activity — have the greatest longevity.nbsp;

Online-only social interactions like writing wall posts and messages showed a nonlinear relationship of which moderate levels were associated with the lowest mortality.

In addition the study found that Facebook users who accepted the most friendships requests lived the longest.nbsp;

For the study the researchers studied counts of online activity over six months comparing the activity of those still living to those who had died.

All of those studied were born between 1945 and 1989 and all the comparisons were made between people of similar age and gender.

The study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences PNAS.

Juventus” Marchisio fired up after return from injury

Italian football champions Juventus’ midfielder Claudio Marchisio has outlined his quot;great desirequot; and claimed that he is in the quot;best possible shapequot; after making a comeback from the left knee ligament surgery in April.

The 30-year-old played in Juventus’ wins against Sampdoria and Napoli and was used cautiously by head coach Massimilano Allegri.

quot;It’s been great to taste victory again with my team-mates. I need to train with a degree of caution because I’m returning from a long-term injury but I’m delighted to be back playingquot; he told Juventus’ website.

quot;I’ve a huge desire to give everything I’ve got for my colleagues who’ve started the season before me. My return so far has been a positive onequot; Marchisio who has been part of the Turin giants since 2006 added.

quot;I’m aware that it’s not always easy to maintain energy levels to the maximum after injuries such as the one I had. But I’m focused on working hard every day to make sure that I’m in the best possible shape out on the pitch.quot;

Juventus are four points clear at the top after 11 games in Serie A in their bid to become the first club to win six consecutive domestic league titles.

They are also sitting comfortably at the top of their group in the European Champions League. But Marchisio said they need to keep getting better.

quot;Each year and with every passing day we’re looking to improve the way we playquot; the Juventus’ second vice-captain noted.

quot;We’re still at a relatively early stage in the season but we need to keep raising the bar in order to make sure that we’re in perfect shape for when we enter the business end of the campaign and face top-quality opposition.quot;

Talking about their next match against French club Lyon here in the Champions League: he said: quot;It’s a very important match. They’re a great side as we saw a couple of weeks ago when they gave us a tough game.

quot;We need to take advantage of the fact that we’re playing at home and that three points would see us into the knockout stages.quot;

Gambhir, Ishant in line for England series

Gambhir, Ishant in line for England series

IANS |

All eyes will be on the Delhi duo of opener Gautam Gambhir and pacer Ishant Sharma when the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s BCCI national selection committee meet here to choose the team for the England Test series on Wednesday.

Gambhir who made a comeback in the just-concluded New Zealand series gave a good account of himself by scoring a half century in the final Test at Indore before accumulating 147 in Delhi’s last Ranji Trophy match against Odisha.

Ishant on the other hand was picked for the opening Test against the Kiwis at Kanpur but could not play any part in the rubber after being down with chikungunya.

Though Ishant did not look match fit in Delhi’s Ranji game against Karnataka at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata the seasoned campaigner bowled more than 40 overs at good pace in his two domestic outings.

With opener Lokesh Rahul still nursing a hamstring strain and seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar dealing with an ankle injury Gambhir and Ishant will be the likely options when the MSK Prasad-led selection panel picks the side.

No other major changes are expected in the Virat Kohli-led side which whitewashed the Kiwis 3-0.

The Indian squad is set to assemble on November 5 at Rajkot which is set to host the series opener from November 9 to 13.

The other Tests are slated to be held in Vishakapatnam November 17 to 21 Mohali November 26 to 30 Mumbai December 8 to 12 and Chennai December 16 to 20.

The five-match series will be a litmus test for the No.1-ranked home side with England having won the last three Test series between the two nations — two in England and one in India.
