Lack of exercise linked to hard-to-treat heart failures

IANS | New York |

A sedentary lifestyle can take a huge toll on your heart. Researchers have found that lack of exercise and excessive weight are strongly associated with a type of heart failure that is very hard to treat.

Heart failure is a chronic condition in which the heart is unable to supply enough oxygenated blood to meet the demands of the body.

"Previous studies have consistently found an association between low levels of physical activity, high BMI (body mass index), and overall risk of heart failure, but this study shows that the association is more pronounced for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, the type of heart failure that is the most challenging to treat," said the study's senior author Jarett Berry, Associate Professor at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in the US.

Heart failure is approximately equally divided between two subtypes — heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HfrEF).

Ejection fraction refers to the percentage of the blood that exits the heart with each contraction.

Many treatments have been developed for treating heart failure with reduced ejection fraction but there are no evidence-based treatments for the other type.

The pooled analysis looked at data from 51,000 participants in three cohort studies, the Women's Health Initiative, the Multiethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), and the Cardiovascular Health Study.

Among the 51,000 participants, there were 3,180 individuals who developed heart failure. Of these, 39 per cent were heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, 29 per cent were heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, and 32 per cent had not been classified when the data was gathered.

The incidence of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction was 19 per cent lower for individuals who exercised at recommended levels, showed the findings published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Similarly, body mass index (BMI) had an inverse relationship with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

Higher BMI levels were more strongly associated with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction than with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction.

Academy issues apology for Oscars’ Best Picture goof-up

IANS |

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences says it "deeply" regrets "the mistakes that were made" after the wrong film was announced as the Best Picture winner at the 89th Academy Awards gala.

The gaffe occurred on Sunday night when veteran actors Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were given the wrong envelope.

Dunaway announced the winner for the Best Picture category for La La Land, but minutes later the producers of Moonlight were informed that it was actually their film that had won the award.

The Academy said in a statement on Monday: "We deeply regret the mistakes that were made during the presentation of the Best Picture category during last night's Oscar ceremony. We apologise to the entire cast and crew of La La Land'and Moonlight whose experience was profoundly altered by this error."

"We salute the tremendous grace they displayed under the circumstances. To all involved – including our presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, the filmmakers, and our fans watching worldwide – we apologise."

The statement also mentioned that for the last 83-years, the Academy has entrusted auditor firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to handle the critical tabulation process, including the accurate delivery of results.

"The PwC has taken full responsibility for the breaches of established protocols that took place during the ceremony. We have spent last night (Sunday) and today (Monday) investigating the circumstances, and will determine what actions are appropriate going forward," the statement added.

It added: "We are unwaveringly committed to upholding the integrity of the Oscars and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences."

The gala was marred by a second goof-up where in the 'In Memoriam' segment, a photograph of living Australian producer Jan Chapman was mistakenly used against late costume designer Janett Patterson's name.

Kejriwal to meet LG on Ramjas issue

IANS | New Delhi |

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will meet Lt Governor Anil Baijal on Tuesday afternoon to demand action against the ABVP and those who issued rape threats to a Delhi University student.

Kejriwal also alleged that the anti-national slogans were usually raised on directions of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student's wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh(RSS).

Gurmehar Kaur, a Delhi University student and daughter of an army Captain who died in the 1999 Kargil war, launched a social media campaign against the ABVP in wake of the violence in Ramjas College.

She later withdrew her campaign on Tuesday after receiving rape and death threats on social media by some who called her "anti-national".

"I'm withdrawing from the campaign. Congratulations everyone. I request to be left alone. I said what I had to say," she said.

"I have been through a lot and this is all my 20-year self could take."

Kejriwal had earlier held the BJP responsible for the Ramjas violence and the subsequent threats to Kaur.

"Threatening our daughters and sisters with rape; is this BJP's patriotism? Shame on these people," he said.

On February 22, Clashes erupted between activists of the left-wing All India Students Association (AISA) and the ABVP outside Ramjas College, after the ABVP forced suspension of an event to be addressed by JNU student Umar Khalid.

Khalid was jailed last year on sedition charges for allegedly shouting anti-national slogans.
