Australian GP: Lewis Hamilton remains ahead in 2nd practice

Mercedes dominating yet another session! Can Ferrari catch them on Saturday?

SNS | New Delhi |

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton continued where he left off in the first practice at the Australian Grand Prix, consistently lapping faster times than the rest of the chasing pack in Friday’s second practice session, with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel half a second behind in second place.

While Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas had been impressive in the first session, his second outing saw a slight dip, ending the day a 100th of a second behind Vettel in third place. Vettel’s teammate, Kimi Raikkonen was in fourth place and the only driver within a second of pace-setter Hamilton’s marker.

Red Bull also saw a slight downturn in fortunes, with their drivers finishing 5th and 6th in an incident packed practice session. Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo was ahead of the much-vaunted Max Verstappen, but with Renault’s Joylon Palmer bringing out the red flags early in the session, many drivers saw their runs interrupted.

Sauber’s Marcus Ericsson was another driver who had an unfruitful practice, hitting the gravel at Turn 6 while Williams’ Felipe Massa failed to recover from a gearbox issue and was unable to go round Albert Park more than six times as a result. Kevin Magnussen was another driver who could not get much time on the tracks after his Haas was crippled by a water pressure issue.

Friday’s afternoon session proves that plenty of teams are struggling with a variety of issues and with time running out, they best get their act together if they wish to realistically compete in Saturday’s qualifying and the race on Sunday.

Won’t allow Karnataka to become ‘Udta Punjab’, says minister

PTI | Bengaluru |

Asserting that his government has taken stringent steps to check drug menace, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara has said 'Udta Punjab' will not happen in the state after the BJP raised the issue in the legislative council.

'Udta Punjab' is the name of a Hindi film which highlights drug abuse by youths in Punjab.

"A special drive has been launched to curb drug menace in the state, especially Bengaluru and Mangaluru. We will not allow Bengaluru to go the Punjab way. Udta Punjab will not happen here," he said.

The Minister was replying to BJP MLC Lahar Singh in the legislative council yesterday.

Raising the issue in the House, Singh rapped the government for its "inaction" to curb the drug menace in the state.

Parameshwara said the government has taken the matter seriously and directed police to take stringent action against drug peddlers. "It has been come to the notice of the police that petty shops near colleges indulge in peddling," he said.

Parameshewara said 65 Indian and 23 foreign nationals have been arrested in connection with drug-trafficking cases in the past two-and-a-half months.

The minister also said there are 1,023 foreign nationals overstaying in the state."We have been in touch with the External Affairs Ministry, and around 59 of overstaying foreign nationals have been deported," he said.

About the recent mysterious death of a Nigerian national, who overstayed his visa, here, Parameshwara said he was a drug trafficker and had died in a road mishap.

"Nobody has claimed his body despite the Nigerian High Commission being informed. Right steps will be taken to dispose of the body after getting court orders," he said.

BJP's Capt Ganesh Karnik said steps should be taken to destroy the entire drug network instead of merely arresting traffickers.

Anushka Sharma’s ‘Phillauri’ goes under CBFC’s knife

SNS |

The Central Board of Film Certification has ordered the makers of Phillauri to delete a scene featuring Hanuman Chalisa.

In the scene, actor Suraj Sharma is seen reciting Hanuman Chalisa while sitting in his bathtub when he sees Shashi (Anushka Sharma), who plays a ghost in the movie. To drive the ghost away, the actor was reciting the Hanuman Chalisa.

According to Hindu beliefs, Hanuman Chalisa drives away the evil spirits but in Phillauri when Suraj recites the Chalisa, the ghost Shashi doesn’t leave the spot.

A source close to the Central board revealed that this particular scene can hurt the sentiments of Hindu community. The CBFC has ordered the makers to remove ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ from the film’s soundtrack. The makers have agreed to omit the scene and now the actor will be seen reciting a prayer but the prayer won’t be heard out loud.

In Phillauri, Anushka Sharma plays the role of a happy ghost while this is Suraj Sharma’s Bollywood debut after Life of Pi’.

Releasing on March 24, Phillauri also features Punjabi actor Diljit Dosanj in a pivotal role.

Incorrigible ‘lotus eaters’

Archana Phull | Shimla |

You may call them the incorrigible ‘lotus eaters’ of Himachal Pradesh. They flaunt lavish lifestyle that they have got by making ‘fast buck’.

A visit to Channi Majra, twin Panchayats in Kangra district of HP towards Punjab’s Pathankot area, makes it clearer.

With a population of around 2,500, the area, which houses a traditional community settled here from Rajasthan, is all along notorious for alleged over- indulgence in illicit ‘lahan’ (liquor made from Jaggery) extraction in crudest of ways.

For decades, majority locals here have faced cases for bootlegging, with women as equal partners. The Police destroyed drums and drums of illegal liquor in the area and arrested them every now and then. But all this did not deter them.

In recent years, with Punjab becoming the hub of drug trafficking through Afghanistan and Pakistan, a number of Channi Majra residents left bootlegging and allegedly took to more lucrative trade of narcotics and synthetic drugs.

The figures with Kangra Police corroborate it.

From 2008 to 2015, the cases of ND&PS (Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act and Drugs and Cosmetics Act showed a consistent rise from 21 to 93 in a year and the persons arrested from 32 to 107 in Channi Majra.

The 2016 data showed a big leap as the cases registered under ND&PS and the Drugs and Cosmetic Act were 362, with 443 arrests against 358 cases and 434 arrests in previous eight years. Besides, the Kangra Police, which led the government take up amendment in Drugs and Cosmetics Act, identified 45 properties last year, freezing five of them worth crores of Rupees. Drugs like heroine and synthetic capsules have been seized from here.

“Channi Majra is worst affected in Kangra district in drug pedalling. Majority people here don’t want to work and they look for easy money. These people are not only trading, but are also consuming drugs,” Kangra district Police chief, Sanjeev Gandhi told The Statesman. He said their networking for drugs is with their relatives settled across the states.

Gandhi, who has tightened the noose around the drug peddlers in Kangra, the biggest district of HP on Punjab border, even set up a female narcotic cell to nab women drug peddlers in border villages, including Bhadroya and Mand.

“We may have big houses and foreign travels to boast, but life has just been that of ‘hide and seek’ with lurking Police fear,” said a local, who left the illicit liquor business to run a dhaba in early 90s. “Not many are able to do it as they avoid struggle for money,” he summed.

One can see the vicious cycle working on ground. More than 80 per cent residents here are still illiterate, only due to their mindset. The area has so far produced a school teacher and few Police cops.

Will ascertain matter in detail: Speaker Sumitra Majahan on Ravindra Gaikwad

Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Majahan on Friday expressed deep concern over Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad brutally assaulting an Air India staffer saying she would ascertain the matter in detail and take action accordingly if there is any complaint.

"The incident happened outside the Parliament, so I will ascertain the details and act on any complaint," Mahajan said outside the Parliament on Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad.

"No one is allowed to misbehave with anyone, even if he is an MP, a common man or any official. As a mother, I teach children not to misbehave with people," she added.

‘Countdown’ begins, I-T dept warns blackmoney holders ahead of Mar 31

IANS | New Delhi |

The Income Tax department on Friday warned blackmoney holders that it has "information" about their illegal deposits and they should avail the soon-to-end PMGKY window to come clean.

In advertisements issued in leading national dailies, the department said that the "countdown" in this regard has begun and stash holders should declare their black money "or regret later".

The window under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojna (PMGKY) closes on March 31.

The advertisement said that the "Income Tax department has information about your deposits."

The department also said that total "confidentiality is ensured" to those who declare their black assets and funds under this scheme.

It had recently also cautioned stash holders to avail the scheme or face stringent action under Benami laws, adding that the defaulters' names will also be shared with the central probe agencies like the Enforcement Directorate and the CBI.

The tax and penalty against those who hide their blackmoney and fail to avail the PMGKY could go as high as 137 per cent of the cash deposits made, a senior officer had said, adding the department will not shy away from slapping the newly enacted Benami Transactions Act against defaulters.

The official explained that a person or entity that opts for PMGKY will have to pay 49.9 per cent tax on the income, whereas a person who does not opt for the scheme but offers his black income in his Income Tax Returns will face a tax and penalty rate of 77.25 per cent.

The one who does not offer his stash funds under the scheme but is caught with undisclosed income in scrutiny assessment will face 83.25 per cent tax rate.

For those who do not declare their stash under the PMGKY and are raided will face 107.25 per cent tax and penalty if the undisclosed income is surrendered during the action.

Those who do not surrender such hidden income even during searches will stand to face the highest level of penalty and tax at 137.25 per cent.

The Benami Act invites rigorous imprisonment of up to seven years and the violators also stand to be charged under the I-T Act, besides being liable to pay fine up to 25 per cent of fair market value of benami property and other penalties.

The Centre had come out with the PMGKY scheme after its decision to demonetise high value currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 last year.

A quarter of the total sum will also have to be parked in a non interest bearing deposit for four years under the said scheme.

The scheme had commenced on December 17 last.

Oil prices decline on rising US stockpiles

The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) said on Wednesday that the country's crude inventories climbed by almost 5 million barrels to 533.1 million last week, far outpacing forecasts for an increase of 2.8 million, Xinhua news agency reported.

Analysts said the rising output also weighed on the production reduction by the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies.

The West Texas Intermediate for May Delivery erased $0.34 to settle at $47.70 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, while Brent crude for May delivery decreased $0.08 to close at $50.56 a barrel on the London ICE Futures Exchange.

Six youths arrested by anti-Romeo squad in Shamli

PTI | Muzaffarnagar |

In a crack-down on eve-teasers, six youths have been arrested in Shamli district by the anti-Romeo squads of the police who held them for allegedly harassing girls.

The arrests were made yesterday in three separate incidents.

Ankur and Arjun were arrested in Jhunjhala town whereas Sonu and Naresh Kumar were arrested from Thana Bhawan town by the newly-formed squads, Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajay Lal Sharma said.

They were found passing lewd remarks on the girl students who were returning home after taking their board examination, the SP said.

Two other youths were arrested in Shamli city for similar offences, he added.

The district police has formed anti-Romeo squads in every police station in the wake of the orders of new chief minister Aditya Nath Yogi, fulfilling a pre-poll pledge of the BJP to check eve-teasing.

Special squads comprising cops from local police stations kept a vigil at markets, malls, schools, colleges, coaching centres, parks and other crowded places to see if women were being harassed.

Airtel to acquire Tikona’s 4G business for Rs. 1,600 crore

PTI | New Delhi |

Bharti Airtel on Thursday announced an agreement with Tikona Digital Networks to acquire the latter's 4G business, including the Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) spectrum and 350 sites, in five telecom circles for around Rs 1,600 crore.

However, the acquisition is subject to requisite regulatory approvals.

"Tikona currently has 20 MHz spectrum in the 2,300 MHz band in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh (East), Uttar Pradesh (West), Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh circles. Airtel plans to roll out high-speed 4G services on the newly acquired spectrum in the five circles immediately after the closure of the transaction," an Airtel statement said.

The company, in a regulatory filing with the Bombay Stock Exchange, said the indicative time of completion of the acquisition is 60 days.

"Airtel's continued focus on strengthening its 4G capabilities across multiple spectrum bands will be complemented with the BWA spectrum acquisition from Tikona. We believe that combining our capacities in TD-LTE (term division-long-term evolution) and FD-LTE (frequency division-long-term evolution) will further bolster our network, and help us provide unmatched high-speed wireless broadband experience to our customers," said Gopal Vittal, MD & CEO (India & South Asia), Bharti Airtel.

"We remain committed to our vision of leading India's digital revolution by offering world-class and affordable telecom services through a robust spectrum portfolio spread across multiple bands," he added.

According to the agreement, the acquisition of the 4G business in Gujarat, UP (East), UP (West) and Himachal Pradesh will be undertaken by Airtel, while in the Rajasthan circle, it will be accomplished through Airtel's subsidiary Bharti Hexacom Limited.

"After the Vodafone-Idea deal, this is another step towards consolidation in the Indian telecom sector. Overall, things are heading in the right direction for a healthy competition," said Rishi Tejpal, Principal Research Analyst, Gartner.

"Airtel's acquisition of Tikona's 4G spectrum fills the gap that it had in the TDD-LTE band mainly in UP East, UP West and Rajasthan circles. With this acquisition Airtel will have nationwide TDD-LTE spectrum," he added.

Post-acquisition, the combined spectrum holding of Airtel in these five circles will be within the spectrum caps prescribed by the government, the statement clarified.

The proposed acquisition will enable Airtel to fill BWA spectrum gaps in the 2,300 MHz band in Rajasthan, UP (East) and UP (West), thereby securing a pan-India footprint in the band.

"The deal will significantly bolster Airtel's spectrum position in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, taking its overall BWA spectrum holding to 30 MHz each in these circles. Post completion of the deal, Airtel will have 30 MHz in the 2300 MHz band in 13 circles giving it tremendous advantage to handle the surging data demand," the statement added.

Resident doctors in Maharashtra yet to resume work

PTI | Mumbai |

Resident doctors in Maharashtra are yet to resume work despite an appeal by an association representing them to join duty and intervention of the Bombay High Court.

With the doctors not returning to work, functioning of the OPDs and general wards in the government and the civic hospitals are likely to be affected today as well.

"The OPDs in KEM, Sion and Nair hospitals have not yet become fully operational. Some doctors are managing them but it has increased the waiting period for patients," Dr Avinash Supe, dean of KEM Hospital, told PTI.

Asked about the striking doctors resuming duty, Supe said, "Very few have returned to work. Hence, full medical services will not be available immediately."

The High Court had yesterday directed the resident doctors to resume work immediately. However, the order was not available on the HC website till last night and therefore protesting doctors decided to wait.

After the court order, the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) late last night appealed to the striking medical practitioners to join duty.

"The order is now available on the HC website and we find it satisfactory. Now, there is a meeting scheduled with some state ministers at 1 pm today where we will discuss the issue (about their safety) once again," said Dr Swapnil Meshram, general secretary of MARD.

After holding a meeting with Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis yesterday, the doctors decided to wait for a copy of the minutes before taking a call on joining duty.

In a bid to end the strike, Fadnavis proposed setting up a panel to resolve security issues in state-run hospitals.

"We have been fooled in the past when promises and assurances made by officials were not strictly implemented.

This time we are being careful," said a MARD official, explaining the delay in the doctors returning to work.

Nearly 4,000 resident doctors have stayed away from work since Monday, demanding enhanced security in the wake of a string of attacks on their colleagues by patients' relatives at government hospitals across the state.

Sita not just an ‘Adarsh Bhartiya Nari’, says Amish Tripathi

IANS | New Delhi |

He is the author of the fastest-selling book series in Indian publishing history — "The Shiva Trilogy" — and his last book, "Scion of Ikshvaku", was the biggest literary blockbuster of 2015, all of which have together sold over 3.5 million copies.

Now, banker-turned-writer Amish Tripathi's upcoming book narrates the story of Hindu goddess Sita, but the author's interpretation is contrary to her depiction in popular culture.

Sita, the wife of Lord Ram, is generally seen as a symbol of the "Adarsh Bhartiya Nari" — the Ideal Indian Woman — and from daily soaps to mythological books, she stands as an obedient and devoted wife. But is she just the sum total of her wifely submissions?

Tripathi, whose second book from the Ram Chandra series is titled "Sita – Warrior of Mithila", said that there is some sort of amnesia among people about the character of Sita.

"Sita was not just an obedient and humble wife; she was a warrior. I was surprised to know that many people do not even know that she was the adopted daughter of King Janak. The feeling that I have got after interacting with so many people is that although people seem aware of the Ramayana, there is very little knowledge about the story of Sita," Tripathi told IANS in a candid chat over breakfast here on Thursday.

"Sita – Warrior of Mithila", which is expected to release by end of May or early June, comes after roughly two years since "Scion of Ikshvaku".

With a slice of french toast and masala omelette waiting to be relished, Tripathi went on to reveal that the second book of the Ram Chandra series is not exactly a sequel to "Scion of Ikshvaku", as it will take the readers back to the beginning.

"Readers will get to see Sita maa as a feminist icon and, even more importantly, they will get to see her as a warrior, not just her physical strength but also her mental ability," he said.

The writer has applied the multi-linear narrative technique in the Ram Chandra series and, therefore, the first book, "The Scion of Ikshvaku", is from the birth of Ram to the kidnapping of Sita; the second book will be from the birth of Sita to the kidnapping of Ram; the third, from the birth of Ravana to the kidnapping of Sita; and from there on, the story converges into a common narrative in the fourth and the fifth parts.

"I can't claim to have invented this style, it's been around for some time. The basic idea is that multiple truths can exist. All of us are in the same room, but one month later, each one of us will have a slightly different recollection of this day. Do we know well enough the backstory of all the characters of Ramayana? So I thought it would be interesting to have the backstories of the main characters, which converges into a common narrative," added the author with gross retail sales of over Rs 100 crore.

He said that the idea of a multi-linear narrative was clear-cut in his mind right from the beginning, which is why he announced it as a five-book series. While Lord Ram remains the overall protagonist of the Ram Chandra series, Sita will take centrestage in the second part and Ravana in the third.

"One point to be noted is that it is not Ramayana from Sita's perspective; that has been done several times. It is, instead, the story of Sita, where Ram comes as a character in the last part of the book," he reminded.

Mythological fiction raises one question, though. Are the depictions of the characters in the book or even the plot of the novel true?

Tripathi said that Indian civilisation believes in multiple truths and that is the strength of the Indian way of life. Our scriptures basically tell us, he said, that your truth is right from your perspective and my truth is right from my perspective.

"The purpose is to catch up on the lessons and inspirations from their lives rather than worrying about a singular truth," quipped the 43-year-old writer.

So what is the biggest lesson that one can derive from the life of Lord Ram?

"That he was a Maryada-Purushotam, the follower of laws. The main lesson from his life is that an able administrator needs to believe in rule of law. When there is a leader who believes in the rule of law, it is very good for the society — but very challenging for the family. He represents an ideal follower of laws," contended Tripathi.

"Sita – Warrior of Mithila", is published by Westland, recently acquired by Amazon. One-third of the book was penned in the national capital, at Tripathi's brother's residence here, while the rest was written in Mumbai and Cambodia.

Tripathi worked for 14 years in the financial services industry and quit it only after, in his own words, his royalty check became greater than his salary.

Selena Gomez feels ‘defeated’ by her youthful appearance

IANS |

Singer-actress Selena Gomez thinks her youthful looks have restricted her acting career.

The 24-year-old says her innocent appearance makes it tough for her to secure more mature onscreen roles.

"I could do any tomboy/teen princess movie in the world if I wanted to. I could do those for years. But I want to be a part of projects that have value, that really matter. And it's really hard to do that," Gomez told nytimes.com.

"Sometimes I feel defeated. I'll audition for a part that I feel very passionate about, meet with people, tell them I'm willing to go places. I think they think I won't go there," she added.

Gomez shared that she doesn't see the landscape changing for her "anytime soon".

"To be honest, I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon for me. I think I look really young and image-wise, it's difficult for people to grasp," she added.

Film industry has become disciplined: Madhuri

IANS |

Madhuri Dixit, who ruled the silver screen in the late '80s and '90s, has said the film industry has become more "disciplined" over the years.

"Today films are being made on time and everyone has become punctual. There is discipline. Also, different kinds (concept) of films are being made and are doing well. It is not just about song and dance, they have started focusing on the story too.

"Today women (actress) are coming in the forefront and producing films which is wonderful. You get a bound script, you are aware about your role, your look and actors just have to focus on their performance. The industry is moving in the right direction," Madhuri said.

Madhuri, 49, who was present at FICCI Frames 2017 along with her husband Sriram Nene, spoke about her online dance academy and life after marriage and motherhoood.

The dancing diva noted more writers are taking interest in writing women-centric roles.

"Change doesn't happen overnight. I see more roles are being written with actresses in mind. Today women are not just a mother, they take care of the home, kids and everything and people are taking cognisance of this," she said.

Madhuri, who was last seen in Gulaab Gang, will return to the big screen provided there is a good role for her.
