Punjab has begun the process of seeking Geographical Indication (GI) status for the famous Amritsari Kulcha, a move aimed at preserving the originality of the centuries-old delicacy and strengthening its association with the holy city of Amritsar.

Officials said the initiative is intended to protect the traditional product from growing imitation in different parts of the country and to ensure that the reputation built by generations of local kulcha makers remains linked to its place of origin.

As part of the exercise, a consultation involving government departments, food technology experts, and representatives of the kulcha industry has been scheduled in Amritsar on June 19. The discussions are expected to focus on the documentation and institutional framework required for filing a GI application.

The proposed recognition would place Amritsari Kulcha among a select group of region-specific products that enjoy legal protection under India’s Geographical Indication framework. Such status is generally granted to products whose quality, reputation, or characteristics are closely connected with a particular geographical area.

Sources in the Food Processing Department said authorities believe GI recognition could help enhance the product’s market value while preventing misuse of the “Amritsari Kulcha” identity by producers operating outside the region. The initiative is also expected to benefit traditional bakers and small businesses that have helped make the food item synonymous with Punjab’s culinary culture.

To facilitate the process, the state government is working on creating a coordinated platform involving technical institutions, scientific bodies, and local stakeholders. An association representing kulcha manufacturers is also likely to be formed, which would play a key role in pursuing the registration process before the competent authorities.

Officials said institutions, including the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology and the Food Technology Department of Guru Nanak Dev University, are expected to assist in compiling historical, technical, and geographical evidence required for the application.

The district administration in Amritsar has been tasked with coordinating the exercise, while industry representatives have been invited to participate in the upcoming deliberations.

If approved, the GI tag would provide legal recognition to the product’s unique identity and could further boost food tourism in Amritsar, a city already known worldwide for its religious significance and rich culinary traditions.
