Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) skipper Steve Smith led by example on Thursday as he smashed an unbeaten 84-run knock against Mumbai Indians (MI) to beat them by seven wickets in the first Maharashtra derby of the tenth edition of the Indian Premier League.

At helm, Smith slammed back-to-back sixes in the last over by Kieron Pollard with MS Dhoni (12*) remained unbeaten on the other end.

Although RPS lost their opener Mayank Agarwal (6) early in the fourth over, Ajinkya Rahane stood responsibly and gave them a brisk start.

Benefitting best out of powerplay, Rahane smashed 60 runs off 34 balls with the help of three sixes and six boundaries. He put a 58-run partnership knock with captain Smith for the second-wicket.

Smith picked the right pulse and continued the domination. His 54-ball knock was well-decorated by three sixes and seven boundaries.

For Mumbai, pacermen Tim Southee, Hardik Pandya and Mitchell McClenaghan were the only successful bowlers as they claimed one wicket each.

Earlier, experienced leg-spinner Imran Tahir claimed three big wickets to help RPS restrict Rohit Sharma-led MI for 184/4 in the end of 20 overs.

The 38-year-old leggie, who played for Delhi Daredevils in past seasons of the IPL, shone to the maximum for his new team this time.

Tahir dismissed MI’s top-order, forcing Parthiv Patel (19), Jos Buttler (38) and Rohit Sharma (3) back to pavilion in first seven overs.

Medium-pacer Rajat Bhatia took the scalp of Ambati Rayudu (10) and Krunal Pandya (3) cheaply in 12th and 14th over respectively.

Spinner Adam Zampa and allrounder Ben Stokes claimed a wicket each to join the RPS bowling attack.

Smith had won the toss and elected to field against MI.

Last season skipper Dhoni, who captained an IPL team in 143 matches, appeared on the field as a player for the first time in the history of the league.

Change in India’s n-strike policy ‘dangerous’: Pakistan

IANS | Islamabad |

Pakistan on Thursday termed the change in India's nuclear arms usage policy as "highly irresponsible and dangerous", and said it will "not help in promoting strategic restraint and stability in a nuclearised South Asia".

"Pakistan has long maintained that the ambiguous no-first-use declaration is not verifiable and hence nothing more than an empty political statement," said Foreign Office spokesman Nafees Zakaria.

The spokesman added that such ambiguous declaration cannot substitute for verifiable arms control and restraint measures.

"Pakistan has to consider capabilities and not intentions, which can change anytime," said Zakaria in its weekly briefing.

Recent reports suggested India may be considering revisiting its "no-first strike" policy, allowing its nuclear establishment to carry out a pre-emptive nuclear strike against Pakistan in the event of a war.

According to a media report, this would not only formally change India's nuclear doctrine, which bars it from launching a first strike, but would loosen its interpretation to deem pre-emptive strikes as defensive.

Earlier, former Defence Secretary Lt. Gen. (retd) Naeem Khalid Lodhi claimed that Pakistan possesses second strike capability against India.

The second strike provides a military with the capability to hit back at an enemy in a situation where its land-based nuclear arsenal had been neutralised.

The nuclear deterrence, said the former Defence Secretary, had been augmented by the second strike capability, efficient delivery systems and effective command and control system.

Pakistan in January 2017 attained the credible "second strike capability" after successfully test-firing nuclear capable submarine-launched cruise missile (SLCM) Babur-III.

US Ambassador to United Nations Nikki Haley recently voiced concerns over the India-Pakistan tensions, saying Washington wanted to play a role in de-escalation.

The move, however, was promptly rejected by India, which has for long argued that Kashmir is a bilateral dispute, and will not accept any third-party mediation over it.

Pakistan, on the contrary, has welcomed the offer of mediation to resolve the longstanding issue. "The world's concerns have been developed in the backdrop of the deteriorating human rights situation in Jammu and Kashmir," he said.

"We welcome the statement of Ambassador Nikki Haley, expressing concerns over the rising tensions between Pakistan and India and the offer of mediation."

The spokesperson regretted that India reacted negatively to the US offer.

"India wants to speak of terrorism! We also insist on speaking of terrorism, which forms one of the elements of the comprehensive dialogue process. We need to address the Indian-sponsored terrorism in Pakistan. Kulbhushan Jadav and many other examples are irrefutable proof of Indian involvement in Pakistan," he said.

India best country to uphold religious harmony, tolerance: Dalai Lama

IANS | Bomdila |

Emphasising the need for religious harmony, Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Thursday said India is still the best country to uphold religious harmony and tolerance.

"Religious harmony is very essential at a time when the sense of responsibility is lacking. But despite niggles, it is possible in India — the most-populated democratic country. This country has shown the way for thousands of years," he said while addressing people at the Buddha Park here.

He said all the world's major religions flourished in India.

"We are social animals and without a sense of compassion for each other, we won't be happy. Whether we are religious or not, there is a need for love and compassion in the world," the Dalai Lama said.

Asserting he was disturbed by terrorism committed in the name of religion, the Dalai Lama said: "We hear a lot about Muslim terrorists, and of late of Buddhist terrorists (Myanmar). But as soon as anyone indulges in terrorism, he is no longer a Muslim or a Buddhist. Come to think of it, Chinese officials describe me as a terrorist too."

The Tibetan leader also said it was right to consume the meat of dead animals but not of those slaughtered.

"Buddhists are taught not to harm other creatures and are vegetarian; but Sri Lankan monk told me many years ago that they (monks) depend on begging for their survival… Buddhist monks are neither vegetarian nor non-vegetarian," he said.

"Pope (Francis) said it is better to be a good human being than a stupid Christian. Similarly, it is better to be good human being than a stupid Buddhist," he said.

IPL 2017: Ravi Shastri disagrees with Sourav Ganguly, calls Delhi Daredevils ‘a strong side’

Delhi will play their first game against RCB in Bengaluru on Saturday.

IANS | New Delhi |

Reacting to former India captain Sourav Ganguly's assertion that the Delhi Daredevils are one of the weaker sides in the 2017 Indian Premier League (IPL), former Team India Director Ravi Shastri on Thursday said no team can be written off easily in the shortest format of the game.

"You can't write anybody off in the IPL because once you get on a winning run, you win a game and then three-four on the trot. I am not saying only for the Daredevils but it could be any team," Shastri told IANS on the sidelines of an event here.

Ganguly had said on Tuesday that the Daredevils, who finished sixth in the eight-team tournament last year, lacked balance and composition going into the IPL, especially after losing South African batsman Quinton de Kock.

De Kock is suffering from a fractured finger sustained during the Wellington Test against New Zealand, while Jean Paul Duminy has backed out citing personal reasons.

Top order batsman Shreyas Iyer has also been ruled out for a week with a bout of chickenpox while star all-rounder, Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews, will miss at least the first half of the IPL as he is recovering from calf and hamstring injuries.

But the 54-year-old Shastri candidly disagreed with the Bengal southpaw, saying that the Delhi team has the right balance and it's only about keeping the momentum going.

"There's still time to see which team is better in this IPL. I believe this is a lottery. I feel they (Daredevils) always had a strong side and it's just about keeping their cool towards the end stages of the tournament," he said.

"They have always been there near the business end of the tournament and then lost the plot."

"I am sure coach Rahul (Dravid) and captain Zaheer (Khan) are two experienced hands and they will try to change things around. They have got the players, a very good bowling unit with variety. They have got a good batting unit as well," he added.

The Delhi Daredevils will play their first game against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Bengaluru on Saturday.

LPG cylinders’ dispatch from Indian Oil’s Bengal bottling plant hit

IANS | Kolkata |

The dispatch of around 30,000 LPG cylinders from the Indian Oil's bottling plant at the city's outskirts was affected on Thursday after a clash between the truck drivers and a group of locals, the company said.

According to police, a clash broke out between the truck drivers and a group of locals on Thursday morning over the demand of subscription for some local programme.

"The Budge Budge bottling plant dispatches 30,000 LPG cylinders a day. Dispatch was affected today (Thursday). But one day disruption will not affect overall supplies," said the company's DGM (LPG),  Amalesh Dutta.

In order to maintain the seamless supplies, the oil marketing company has a contingency plan in place.

"If the agitation prolongs, it may affect the overall supplies. We have contingency plan. If required, we will arrange cylinders from our other bottling plants in Haldia, Kalyani and Durgapur," he said.

Police, however, said that a group of locals allegedly stopped some truck drivers near the plant to asked for a donation for some local event but an altercation started between the two groups when the drivers denied them.

Police apprehended one of the locals from the spot and detained him.

"The truck drivers present in the bottling plant agitated by blocking the adjacent road for almost two hours after the incident. However, the blockade has been removed and the situation is peaceful now," said a senior officer from Budge Budge police station.

IPL 2017: Delhi Daredevils’ Rishabh Pant suffers burn injuries

Rishabh Pant suffered burn injuries, while attending last rites of his father.

Statesman News Service | Dehradun |

Team India and Delhi Daredevils' cricketer Rishabh Pant suffered burn injuries, while attending last rites of his father Rajendra Pant in Haridwar on Thursday.

Pant's leg caught fire during the rites and this might force him to miss Delhi's opening match of IPL 2017, against Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 8.

Rishabh's father Rajendra Pant died of a prolong illness, aged 53, in Roorkee on Wednesday night.

Leaving his IPL preparation, the wicket-keeper batsman rushed to his home state for attending the last rites at Kankhal cremation site in Haridwar. When ritual were being performed at the funeral, Rishabh came in fold of the flames.

Pant suffered burn on his leg and the Kankhal cremation site management committee offered first aid to the cricketer.

Eyewitness claim the burn is not that severe but considering the high-pressure game of IPL and tough competition among players even small injuries can force elimination of a cricketer from the squad.

Rishabh hails from Roorkee and moved to bigger cities for making a career in cricket. He made his T-20 debut for India this year against England.

March services PMI rises for second straight month

IANS | Mumbai |

India's services sector continued its recovery for the second successive month in March on the back of new work orders, following continuous decline since the November demonetisation measure, revealed key macro-economic data on Thursday.

The Nikkei India Services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) stood at 51.5 in March, up from 50.3 in February, and as compared to 48.7 registered in January.

An index reading of above 50 indicates an overall increase, while below 50 an overall decrease.

The PMI series of data are published by the leading global diversified provider of financial information services "IHS Markit".

"India's private sector economy stayed on an upward trajectory during March, benefiting from an upswing in demand and output. The country's rapid recovery from the demonetisation-related downturn was accompanied by job creation and softer inflationary pressures," said Pollyanna De Lima, economist at IHS Markit and author of the report.

"New business and output rose for the second straight month in March, with rates of expansion accelerating in both cases. The improvement in business conditions promoted job creation, while confidence towards the year-ahead outlook for activity was at a four-month high," she said.

Besides, the seasonally adjusted Nikkei India Composite PMI Output Index also rose during the month in consideration to 52.3, from 50.7 in February, signalling consolidation in the first increase in private sector output last month after October.

"By historical standards, the increases in new work and activity remain relatively mild, though growth is likely to gather speed as we head into the new financial year. This is shown by firms' willingness to hire additional employees and reinforced by stronger confidence towards the 12-month outlook for output," De Lima said.

The report said, going ahead, services companies indicated that activity is expected to rise over the next 12 months.

On the prices front, though input costs for services firms rose in March, and some services companies raised their own selling prices in this period, the overall rate of charge inflation was "slight".

Meanwhile, data earlier this week showed India's manufacturing sector expanded last month due to healthy demand conditions and softer inflationary pressure.

The Nikkei India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) which is a composite indicator of manufacturing performance rose to a five-month high of 52.5 in March, from 50.7 reported for February.

Islamic State fighters shoot down Iraqi chopper in Mosul

IANS | Baghdad |

Fighters from the Islamic State jihadist group on Thursday brought down an Iraqi military helicopter in the embattled city of Mosul, killing two crew members, the Iraqi army said in a statement.

"The helicopter was hit by enemy fire," said the statement from Joint Operations Command.

The chopper was providing air support to Iraqi Federal Police trying to dislodge IS fighters on the western side of Mosul, the statement added.

Local broadcaster Rudaw reported that the helicopter was downed by a rocket launched from west Mosul and said it crashed in the eastern side of the northern Iraqi city.

It was the first aircraft brought down by IS in Mosul since the US-backed offensive to dislodge the group from the city began in mid-October.

Fierce fighting has continued in Mosul as Iraqi forces battle to retake the Old City, where 400,000 people are believed to be living.

Depression affecting 86 mn in Southeast Asia: WHO

IANS | New Delhi |

With depression being the biggest cause of suicides, and the highest cause of death among 15-29-year olds in Southeast Asia, the World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday called for scaling up of the quality and reach of mental health services to tackle depression.

Depression affects nearly 86 million people in WHO Southeast Asia Region and if left untreated, in its most severe form can lead to suicide.

The global health organisation said there is a need for individuals, communities and countries to talk more openly about depression and scale up the quality and reach of mental health services to prevent untold hardships and precious lives being cut short by depression, a condition that can be easily treated.

"Depression is an issue that needs to be heard. It can affect anyone at any stage of life, impacting relationships, work and social interactions, and impeding our ability to live life to its fullest. Depression can be managed and overcome," said Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director, WHO Southeast Asia, in a statement.

April 7 every year is marked as World Health Day and depression has been set as the theme for 2017. WHO wants to lay emphasis on depression because it involves persistent sadness or loss of interest or pleasure in things normally enjoyed.

According to WHO, though depression affects all demographic groups, it is more commonly experienced by adolescents and young adults, women of childbearing age (particularly following childbirth), and adults over the age of 60.

Stating that though efforts have been made by countries in the region, Singh said that mental health has been among the top 10 health priorities in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Indonesia, the Maldives and Sri Lanka in recent years.

Eight of the 11-member countries have mental health policies or plans. She complimented India for its recent legislation that decriminalises suicide and seeks to provide health care and services for persons with mental health conditions.

Singh added that depression-related health services across the region must be made more accessible and of higher quality, and this is possible even in low- and middle-income settings.

Medical experts have also said that with the rise in sedentary lifestyle among youngsters, infertility is also becoming a major reason for depression. They said depression is also leading to disability worldwide and is a major contributor to the overall global burden of disease.

"It is important to diagnose the symptoms that hinder conception. If a person is experiencing tearfulness, not looking forward to things as much as they used to, have issues with sleeping and/or eating, are not enjoying activities like one did in the past, and are feeling irritable, it is possible that the person is depressed. Women with increased stress hormones are less likely than others to get pregnant." said Jyoti Gupta, IVF Expert at city based Indira IVF Hospital.

Talking about the symptoms of depression, Samir Parikh, Director Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences at Fortis Healthcare, said that symptoms could be accompanied by significant weight loss, decrease or increase in appetite, sleep disturbances, low energy levels and fatigue.

"A depressed individual might experience feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt, with a difficulty in concentration, difficulty in decision-making, and recurrent thoughts of death," said Parikh.

Didn’t know there was a case against me: Rakhi Sawant

IANS | Mumbai |

Actress Rakhi Sawant on Thursday claimed she never knew a case had been filed against her for a remark she made in reference to sage Valmiki, thereby adding a new twist to the ongoing controversy.

Rakhi told the media here: "I got to know from the media that I have been arrested, there's a case filed against me, and a warrant issued. I didn't know that Punjab police is searching for me.

"I am shocked. I don't know anything. Police has not come to my house. I have not received any warrant. I don't even know that there is a case filed against me."

"If I am guilty, I am ready to go to jail," Rakhi added.

The complainant had accused her of "hurting the religious sentiments" of the Valmiki community.

Rakhi has chosen to defend herself two days after a Punjab police team came to Mumbai to execute the arrest warrant against her. But they returned after failing to find her at the given address. They will now file the matter in court during the case's next hearing on April 10.

Rakhi said when she heard about the case, she went to Bangur Nagar and Oshiwara police station here and asked for a warrant. However, the police "denied any warrant" against her.

However, the actress apologised for hurting the religious sentiments of the Valmiki community.

"I just gave an example of Valmiki ji that I have been reading in books since childhood… I didn't want to hurt anybody's sentiments," she added.

Rakhi also claimed that ever since she made a comment drawing a comparison between singer Mika Singh and Valmiki last year, she had been receiving threats.

Law will run its course against sword-wielding pol leaders: Mamata

IANS | Purulia (West Bengal) |

Decrying the armed rallies organised across the state by the Sangh Parivar on the occasion of Ram Navmi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday gave a stern warning that the law would take its course against political leaders who are trying to intimidate people by walking with swords.

"Some political leaders walked on the street with swords. They are trying to intimidate people. No matter who it is, appropriate action would be taken against any political leader who rallied with arms. Law will take its course. Everyone is equal in this respect," Banerjee asserted at the public meeting here.

Massive rallies were organised by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its affiliates like Hindu Jagoran Mancha, across the eastern state on Wednesday in a never before grandiose Ram Navmi celebration, where thousands of Hindu activists including school children were seen walking on the road brandishing sticks and sharp weapons.

Most of the senior state Bharatiya Janata Party leaders took part in the procession, with a number of them carrying arms. The party's state President Dilip Ghosh, who is also an MLA in West Midnapore district's Khargapur, was seen leading one such rally in his constituency by holding aloft a sword.

Banerjee said if carrying arms in the street rallies becomes a frequent practice, it may ignite confrontation between different communities and hamper the environment of peace and harmony in the society.

"Some groups rallied with swords and other weapons yesterday in the name of Ram Navmi. Carrying arms is not the tradition of the Hindu community. Tomorrow if any other community decides to rally with swords, would they start a sword fight on the streets? Will there be any peace left at our homes if that happens?" the Trinamool Congress supremo questioned.

However, Ghosh countered that carrying arms during Ram Navmi processions is an Indian tradition.

"This is a part of Indian tradition. These traditions are there long before Indian Constitution was written," he said.

Taking a swipe at the Trinamool Congress, BJP national secretary Rahul Sinha said swords are not considered a weapon now and accused the state ruling party of supplying modern weapons to people.

"Swords are not considered as weapon nowadays. Young kids play with small fake swords as toys. In today's world, guns and bombs are the real weapons and Trinamool Congress is solely responsible for the circulation of such weapons in the state," he said.

Show your cards on Syria, Russia tells Trump

IANS | Moscow |

Russia on Thursday challenged US President Donald Trump to set out his strategy on Syria after he declared that an apparent chemical weapons attack had transformed his views on the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

On Wednesday, Trump said the attack on Tuesday against Syrian civilians that killed over 85 people "crossed a lot of lines for me" and now Syria was his "responsibility".

When asked if Moscow would reconsider its backing for Assad, Russia's Foreign Ministry instead challenged the US to show its cards.

"Russia's approach to Assad is clear. He is the legal President of an independent state. What is the US approach?" Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told CNN.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned against "snap judgments".

"It's indeed a very menacing course of events, dangerous and horrible crime. However, sticking labels on everyone, prematurely, is not a correct thing to do, in our opinion," Peskov told the media.

Russia is Syria's most powerful ally and has provided the military might behind Assad's grip on the country, which plunged into civil war six years ago.

Trump has maintained that the bloodshed in Syria was the result of weak policy under former President Barack Obama's administration, reports CNN.

Several countries, including Britain and Turkey, have now said they believe the Syrian regime carried out Tuesday's chemical weapons attack.

France said it would continue to push a resolution through the UN Security Council that would force the Syrian government to provide flight logs from the day of the attack.

Russia on Wednesday claimed that the deaths were caused by a Syrian regime airstrike on a chemical munitions depot held by a "terrorist" group.
