Andy Murray joins plea to British PM over climate change promises

The plea from the campaigners told the government that "nature is not up for negotiation".

IANS | London |

British tennis star Andy Murray, singer Will Young and other celebrities joined 11 environment organisations in a plea to Prime Minister Theresa May on Sunday over Britain's climate change promises.

They signed a joint letter delivered to 10 Downing Street warning the British government against watering down climate change and environmental commitments during its Brexit negotiations with the European Union, reports Xinhua news agency.

The plea from the campaigners told the government that "nature is not up for negotiation" after photographed documents suggested that Britain could scale down environmental measures in order to smooth post-Brexit trade deals.

As well as a host of known celebrity environment advocates, the letter to May was signed by 11 organisations including WWF, Greenpeace, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), and Friends of the Earth.

This warning comes after recently photographed documents appeared to show that the British Government could scale back some of its international work on climate change and the illegal wildlife trade to clear the way for post-Brexit trade deals.

A spokesman from WWF UK for the signatories said: "This is despite the UK and global environment facing an unprecedented level of danger.

"The State of Nature Report, produced in 2016 by a number of the NGO signatories to today's letter, found that more than half of the UK's wildlife is in decline, including much loved species such as the hedgehog and water vole. There are an estimated 40,000 UK deaths per year attributable to exposure to outdoor air pollution and flooding events during the winter of 2013/14 caused 1.3 billion pounds of economic damage."

Tanya Steele, CEO of WWF, said, "Our environment must not be sacrificed during the Brexit negotiations. The UK Government must deliver on its promises and leave the environment in a better state for future generations rather than trading away protections for our nature and climate."

Himachal Pradesh women not in the pink of health

Archana Phull | Shimla |

Women in Himachal Pradesh may be tough, but they are not in pink of health.

The disturbing indicator has come to notice in the latest National Family Health Survey-4, according to which more than half the number of women between 15-49 years of age, including pregnant women, are anaemic. Equal number of children in the age category of 6-59 months in the hill state also have lesser haemoglobin (Hb).

What is more serious is that there is a jump of ten per cent in numbers of anaemic women in Himachal (53.5 per cent) from 43 per cent in NFHS-3 done ten years back. The percentage of anaemic women in Himachal is not only higher than the national average, but is against the trend of decline in anaemic women at country level.

In India, the per centage of anaemic women has gone down from 55.3 to 53 from NFHS-3 to NFHS-4, and that of pregnant women from 57.9 to 50.3.

In HP, the pregnant women who are anaemic are 50.2 per cent as per the latest survey compared with 38.1 per cent ten years back.

The incidence of anaemic in tribal women is worse off, as 83.2 per cent women in tribal district of Lahaul Spiti and 80.08 per cent women in Kinnaur in the age category of 15-49 years are anaemic.

Anaemia in men has slightly increased in HP from 18 per cent to 20.1 over the last ten years.

Medical experts with Indira Gandhi Medical College hospital here said the increasing incidence of anaemia in the age category of 15-49 years has to do with poor nutritional status since adoloscence. “But it is a cause of worry and reflects on general health of women. It has a direct relation with other health issues also, including those at the time of child bearing. We need to improve the situation,” the experts said.

Subhash Mendhapurkar, Director, Social Uplift Though Rural Action (SUTRA), which is working in field of women health for long in HP, blamed the government for its denial mode on anaemia among women and children.

“The District Level Household and Facility Survey (DLHS) in HP in recent years too has shown that 47 per cent girls and 45 per cent boys in the age group of 10-19 years are anaemic. But what have we done to address it?” he questioned.

He said the trend of increasing incidence of anaemia has to do with the economic growth, which has changed the dietary habits.

It is pertinent to mention that the previous BJP government had started a programme for Anaemia Free HP, which never took off for its piece meal approach to address the health problem through iron tablets- than the nutritional habits.

Solar power companies sign deal for Rewa ultra mega solar park project

PTI | New Delhi |

World Bank Group IFC has said that Madhya Pradesh has signed project agreements with solar power companies on Monday for Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Park.

“IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, is the lead transaction advisor for this project that will mobilise $550 million in private investment and avoid a million tonnes of GHG (Greenhouse gas) emissions,” IFC said in a statement.

According to the statement, the project is led by Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Limited (RUMSL), a joint venture between the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) and Madhya Pradesh Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (MPUVN).

The first year tariff for the project had dropped to an all-time low of Rs.2.97 per unit under a competitive bidding.

The Rewa solar park transaction will have an enormous ripple effect, helping create new markets for large solar projects across India and the region, Philippe Le Houerou, IFC Executive Vice President and CEO, said in the statement.

We have partnered with state and national government agencies for years to develop the solar market in India – from rooftops to mega solar parks-and the agreements signed on Monday are the next step in IFCs efforts to help India be a global leader in renewable energy and secure a clean, sustainable future.

The 750 MW capacity project was auctioned in three packages of 250 MW each, and will be one of the biggest single site solar project in the world. The three winning bidders for the project are Mahindra Renewables, ACME Solar, and Solenergie Power, it said.

The winning bidders signed two sets of power purchase agreements with the Madhya Pradesh Power Management Corporation Ltd (MPPMCL) and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. About 24 per cent of energy from the park is being sold to the Delhi Metro which will meet about 80 per cent of its daytime energy requirement.

The Rewa solar project will also receive financing from the World Bank, which is helping India deliver on its solar ambitions with more than $1 billion in lending over FY2017, as well as supporting the India-led International Solar Alliance, which aims to promote solar use globally by mobilising $1 trillion in investments by 2030.

Don’t indulge in petty politics over Harjit Singh Sajjan issue: PPCC

Statesman News Service | Chandigarh |

The Punjab Congress on Monday castigated elements standing up in support of Canadian defence minister Harjit Singh Sajjan, saying there were enough documentary and circumstantial evidence on record to prove the Indo-Canadian’s Khalistani sympathies.

In a statement issued by Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), leaders Ravneet Bittu and Gurjit Aujla said that those criticising Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh were playing into the hands of anti-Indian forces out to destroy the secular fabric of the nation. They further urged all organisations, including political parties, not to indulge in petty politics over such a serious issue, which could have implications for the future of Punjab and its people.

Sajjan is scheduled to kick-start his India visit from Monday evening.

Sajjan’s brazenly pro-Khalistani stance has also not gone down well with the Indian government. At a Surrey temple Remembrance Day event in 2011, the Liberal candidate had warned his colleagues from being photographed near posters of Khalistani martyrs. The incident created so much stir that Ottawa was forced to apologise to India over the event. PPCC leaders said that as per publicly reported information, the apology followed complaints from some Punjabi-Canadians that religious fundamentalists had hijacked a solemn day to honour the sacrifices of Canadian soldiers.

By choosing to ignore these, and many other documented facts, political and religious organisations in India were extending their subtle support to Sajjan and other pro-Khalistani elements like him, said the PPCC leaders, warning that this would prove to be highly damaging to the interests of India, particularly Punjab, in the long run.

The recent statements of several religious and political leaders, dubbing Captain Amarinder’s refusal to meet Sajjan during his India visit as a `conspiracy’, were a cause for concern as they had chosen to indulge in needless criticism, without even bothering to check out Sajjan’s background, the Congress leaders added.
