12-year-old murders friend over Rs.250 cricket match bet

IANS | Kolkata |

A 12-year-old boy in West Bengal's Howrah district allegedly killed his friend following a dispute over a bet of Rs.250 placed on a cricket match, police said on Sunday.

The accused has been taken into custody, police said. The body of the victim was found on Saturday.

The accused and the victim, both resident of Daspara under Liluah police station, had bet Rs.250 on the result of a cricket match.

The victim – also a 12-year-old – won the bet, but the accused refused to pay the amount, triggering a quarrel.

"They had bet Rs 250 on the match. My son won the bet and demanded the money. But he (the accused) refused to pay the amount.

"He then brought my son to a nearby garden and beat him up mercilessly. He then smashed my son's head with a brick. My son became senseless. Then he throttled him," said the victim's father Kanhaiya Paswan.

The accused then tried to disfigure the victim's body, dragged it to a nearby jungle and covered it with shrubs and bricks.

The accused and one of his friends were detained and interrogated at length in the Liluah police station. "One of the boys broke down and confessed the crime," said a police officer.

"I won't get my son back. But the killer must be punished," said Paswan.

Opposition settling foreigners in Jammu, says Jitendra Singh

IANS | Jammu |

Union Minister of State in the PMO Jitendra Singh on Sunday accused opposition parties in Jammu and Kashmir for allowing foreigners to settle in Jammu.

Addressing the Bharatiya Janata Party's state executive committee meeting in Doda district, he asked party workers to go to the people and highlight the developmental works and projects brought in by the Narendra Modi Government in Jammu and Kashmir to give a comparison of what hadn't happened in the last 60 years and what all had been made possible in just three years.

He accused the opposition leaders for being hand in glove in settling foreign Rohingyas and Bangladeshis in Jammu for electoral considerations.

"It is an irony that Jammu-based leaders, who have been for years dancing to the tune of their Kashmir-centric masters, are now suddenly questioning the contribution of BJP when they have been thrown out of power.

"What has been their contribution to the development of Jammu when they were in power, both in the state as well as centre for decades," he asked.

Enumerating the Modi government's long list of projects in Jammu in just three years, Singh referred to IIT, AIIMS and IIM for Jammu, approval of the engineering college for Kathua and medical colleges for Kathua and Doda, the inter-state Keediyan-Gadyal bridge in Lakhanpur, North India's first Bio-tech park at Gati near Kathua, a passport centre at Udhampur and approval for Katra-Delhi expressway and the Basholi-Doda Chandragalla tunnel.

To those who accuse BJP of having promoted "polarisation" in name of religion, he said his party has brought polarisation in name of development wherein people from all religions and castes voted for it in all the recently-held elections.

Nadal wins his 10th Monte-Carlo Masters

IANS | Roquebrune-Cap-Martin (France) |

Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal won the Monte-Carlo Masters by defeating his countryman Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the final to lift the 10th title of his favourite tournament here on Sunday.

Nadal, regarded as one of the greatest clay-court players of all time, defeated Ramos-Vinolas 6-1, 6-3 in 76 minutes and became the first player in the Open Era to win 10 Monte-Carlo Masters tournaments and 50 career clay-court titles, reports Efe.

Since the beginning of the match, Ramos-Vinolas, ranked World No.24, was subjected to tremendous pressure and managed to save two championship points, but eventually hit a double fault on Nadal's third chance to claim victory.

This is also Nadal's 70th ATP World Tour title and his 29th ATP Masters 1000 crown, just one title shy of Serbian record-holder Novak Djokovic, who has 30 titles to his name.

Sunday's match was the first all left-handed Monte-Carlo Masters final since 2010, when Nadal won the title against compatriot Fernando Verdasco.

It also marks Nadal's perfect 14-0 record of never losing against a fellow Spaniard in an ATP World Tour final.

BJP complains to EC against AAP’s Manish Sisodia

IANS | New Delhi |

The Delhi BJP on Sunday filed a complaint with the Election Commission against Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, accusing him of violating the Model Code of Conduct during the civic polls.

Demanding legal action against Sisodia, Delhi BJP Vice-President Abhay Verma and BJP Legal Cell member Neeraj claimed that the AAP leader had, during an interview to a private news channel, appealed to the people to vote for Aam Aadmi Party even while balloting for the three municipal corporations was on.

"Repeated violation of Model Code of Conduct by Aam Aadmi Party leaders is a repeat of what they did during the 2015 Vidhan Sabha elections in Delhi, Punjab, and Goa. It is a proof of anarchic nature of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's party," Bharatiya Janata Party's Delhi unit President Manoj Tiwari said.

IPL 2017: Hashim Amla helps Kings XI Punjab end losing streak

Punjab defeated Gujarat Lions by 25 runs at the at the SCA Stadium in Rajkot.

SNS | New Delhi |

Motivated by Hashim Amla's 65-run knock, Kings XI Punjab bowlers bowled brilliantly to help the team break losing streak of four matches as they defeated Gujarat Lions by 25 runs at the at the SCA Stadium in Rajkot on Sunday.

Chasing a strong target of 189 runs at their home ground, Gujarat made a hesitate start as their openers Brendon McCullum and Aaron Finch lost their wickets cheaply for six and 13 runs respectively.

However, wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik kept the hope alive for Gujarat’s fans. He slammed unbeaten 58 runs off 44 balls with six boundaries to excite the Rajkot spectators.

Four of Gujarat’s batsmen were dismissed for a single-digit score and no other batsmen managed to impress much with the willow.

For Punjab, Sandeep Sharma, KC Cariappa and Axar patel were the star bowlers as they claimed two wickets each.
Pacer Mohit Sharma took the scalp of Finch to help the KXIP bowlers in assault.

Earlier in Punjab’s innings, it was consistent hitter Hashim Amla who stole all the limelight. The 34-year-old batsman, who scored his maiden IPL century in his last match, continued consistent batting display on Sunday as he scored 65 runs to take KXIP to 188/7 in their innings.

With this, Amla clinched the orange cap after scoring highest 299 runs from seven matches. He hit two sixes and nine boundaries in his illustrious 40-ball knock.

After losing the toss, Punjab struggled to start well as opener Manan Vohra lost his wicket cheaply for two runs.

However, Shaun Marsh (30) and Amla stabilised Punjab after early blow as the pair put 70-run stand for the second-wicket partnership.

Captain Glenn Maxwell and Axar Patel contributed 31 and 34 runs respectively to help KXIP heap a competitive total.
Gujarat pacer Andrew Tye claimed two wickets in the shape of Marsh and Marcus Stoinis (7).

Shubham Agarwal, Nathu Singh and Dwane Smith supported Tye in the pace attack after taking the scalp of Amla, Vohra and Patel respectively.

Tweaker Ravindra Jadeja trapped skipper Maxwell LBW to join the party.

Dark chocolate may protect your brain from ageing

PTI | Los Angeles |

Chocoholics, take note! Eating dark chocolate may protect your brain from age-related stress and inflammation that are thought to play an important role in the neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease.

The findings may help explain the beneficial effects on memory seen in people who consume dark chocolate, researchers said.

Oxidative stress and inflammation increase with ageing and are thought to play an important role in the development of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.

In a new study, researchers from the University of California San Diego in the US showed that the epicatechin (Epi), a flavanol found in foods such as dark chocolate, reduced damaging oxidative stress and neuroinflammation in a mouse model of ageing.

Just two weeks of treatment with epicatechin not only suppressed levels of oxidative stress and neuroinflammation that would normally be increased in this mouse model, but also improved memory and anxiety levels in the mice.

“We previously reported on the beneficial effects of treatment with the cacao flavanol on ageing-induced oxidative stress and capacity to restore modulators of mitochondrial biogenesis in the prefrontal cortex of 26-month-old mice,” researchers said.

“In the current study, using a similar mouse model of ageing, we examined the capacity of Epi to mitigate hippocampus oxidative stress and inflammation leading to improved memory and anxiety levels,” they said.
Male mice underwent two weeks of treatment and samples of their brains were collected for the assessment of relevant endpoints.

The assessment of the OS markers protein carbonyls and malondialdehyde levels show significant increases with ageing that are suppressed by Epi.

Altogether, results evidence a unique capacity of Epi to significantly mitigate neuroinflammation leading to improved brain function.

The research was published in the journal Experimental Biology.

No intentions to reverse my retirement plans: Younis Khan

Younis, 39, in the video also told his fans to not doubt his credibility and pray for his success.

PTI | Karachi |

Pakistan's former captain and senior batsman, Younis Khan has made it clear he has no intentions of reversing his decision of retiring from international cricket.

“A lot of things are being said regarding my retirement from Test cricket… that perhaps Younis Khan wants to continue playing cricket,” he said in a video uploaded on his Twitter account. “There is no truth to this,” he asserted.

A fresh controversy erupted in Pakistan cricket after Younis apparently told a website in an interview that if required he can take back his retirement decision for the sake of the national team.

But on Sunday, the senior batsman was clearly not pleased with the criticism directed ta him for apparently having second thoughts on his retirement.

“I have retired by my own wishes, with honour, in the right manner and according to a plan,” Younis said.
Younis, who is just 23 runs short of becoming the first Pakistani batsman to reach 10,000 Test runs made it clear that the answers he had given in the interview to the website were being made into a big controversy.

“I won't go into details about the questions I was asked [in the interview], the response I gave and the version that was brought to you,” he said.

Both Younis and Test captain, Misbah-ul-Haq have announced they will retire from test cricket after the three-match series in the West Indies.

Both have already retired from ODIs and T20 internationals. Younis made it clear he had no plans to change his retirement plans even if he had a successful series in the West Indies.

“Even if I score a century in every innings of the three tests even then I will retire from test cricket as announced by me,” he added.

Misbah also stoked the Younis retirement issue when he also in an interview to the same website expressed the wish that Younis should continue playing for atleast two more years.

He said that Pakistan cricket still required the presence of Younis in the dressing room and he can carry on playing for now.

Younis, 39, in the video also told his fans to not doubt his credibility and pray for his success.

German towns hand out housework vouchers to employees

PTI | London |

In a bid to encourage qualified women involved in family chores to return to work, two German towns are handing out vouchers to employees working extra hours to help with housework such as cleaning and ironing.

Two towns in Baden-Wuerttemberg, southwest Germany, are running the publicly funded scheme, aimed at both supporting family life and reducing the shadow economy.

Employees covered by social insurance get a subsidy of 8 euros an hour for additional time worked.

The vouchers can be exchanged at agencies supplying domestic services, BBC reported, citing a German daily.
Ralf Kleindiek, state secretary in the federal ministry of family affairs, stressed that the goal was to “support qualified women who are heavily involved in family work but would like to return to work or do more work”.

The project, launched last month, is due to run until February 2019, according to the German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine (FAZ).

The initiative was inspired by a similar scheme in Belgium, the report said.

Employment agencies issue vouchers to eligible employees in the towns of Aalen and Heilbronn, the FAZ said.
The vouchers can then be redeemed by service agencies whose staff have social insurance.

Between 75 per cent and 83 per cent of helpers employed in German households are unregistered, according to an estimate by the German Business Institute in Cologne.

“With professional help in the home, it is easier to reconcile work and family life,” said Kleindiek.

“On the other hand, we are strengthening service companies with the pioneering project and effectively combating illegal work, since the vouchers may only be redeemed where the companies employ their employees with social insurance,” he said.

When Rishi Kapoor was apprehensive to shoot ‘Karz’ song

PTI | Mumbai |

Subhash Ghai's 1980 release Karz is still remembered for its story and chartbuster music, but its lead actor Rishi Kapoor reveals he was apprehensive to shoot a song for the movie without any choreographer.

The actor says his first schedule of the movie started with picturisation of the popular Dard-E-Dil song, during he which he realised there was no choreographer on the set.

“I asked who will choreograph the song, so Subhash Ghai said he will. To be honest, I didn't have that conviction, or was that happy that he will shoot the song because he had made action films. I objected a little but he convinced me. He said we will re-shoot the song if I don't like it.

“I am happy to tell you, the final version that you see has been picturised by Subhash Ghai with no choreographers. He is among the very few directors who can picturise a song without any help from choreographers,” Rishi told reporters here.

The 64-year-old actor was speaking at a special 're-premiere' event of the film along with Ghai and actress Simi Garewal.

The film's album, by Laxmikant-Pyarelal had several successful numbers like, Om Shanti Om, Dard-E-Dil and Ek Haseena Thi.

At the event, Rishi shared an anecdote involving the music of the film and Anupam Kher.

“Anupam Kher sahab often jokes with me. I had gone to a show and whenever the topic of 'Karz' comes, naturally the 'Om Shanti Om' song is remembered. The lyrics of the song are 'meri umar kay naujawanon.' So he told me, I should stop singing this and instead sing kya umar thi, kya sama tha, kya zamana tha. Ek haseena thi ek deewana tha, he says.

Umar Akmal to return in Pakistan squad for Champions Trophy?

Akmal is expected to make a comeback in the Pakistan squad for the ICC Champions Trophy.

PTI | Karachi |

Enigmatic Pakistan batsman Umar Akmal is expected to make a comeback in the Pakistan squad for the ICC Champions Trophy to be held in England in June.

After being dropped for the tour to the West Indies on fitness grounds, the national selectors and team management are now considering Umar for a berth in the Champions Trophy squad.

“Umar is a serious contender for a recall but his elder brother, Kamran Akmal is unlikely to be picked for the tournament as the selectors and management were not impressed with his efforts in the limited over matches in the West Indies, a well-informed source told PTI.

“Kamran got seven innings in the West Indies to make his mark but unfortunately he failed and the selectors are now contemplating bringing back Azhar Ali into the ODI side to open with Ahmad Shahzad,” the source added.

Kamran had earned a recall to the national team last month after being on the sidelines since April 2014.

The source said that Umar is a serious contender as the selectors wanted a power hitter option in the top and lower order.

“Umar has also worked on his fitness since being dropped and has led Punjab well in the ongoing Pakistan Cup ODI tournament,” he added.

Two rookie players who went to the West Indies for the ODI series and returned without playing a match, batsman Asif Zakir and all-rounder Fahim Ashraf are also expected to be given the axe for the Champions Trophy, a title Pakistan has never won since its inception in 1998.

The source said that another all-rounder Aamir Yamin, who is doing well in the Pakistan Cup, could instead be given the allrounder's role in England but the selectors are yet to make a final decision on his inclusion.

The selectors have to announce the 15-member Champion Trophy squad by the April 25 deadline.

If the selectors recall Azhar for the mega-event in which Pakistan faces India and South Africa in its opening two matches, it is a decision that is bound to come under debate since they had dropped him for the ODIs in West Indies after he stepped down as the captain just before the start of the Pakistan Super League in February.

“Azhar is likely to be included as he is a steady player and the selectors feel in English conditions he can be useful,” the source said.

Pacer Sohail Khan is also expected to get a recall for the Champions Trophy after being dumped for the West Indies tour apparently on fitness and disciplinary grounds.

Pakistan's probable Champions Trophy squad: Azhar Ali, Ahmad Shahzad, Babar Azam, Umar Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Muhammad Hafeez, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Wahab Riaz, Muhammad Aamir, Emad Wasim, Shadab Khan, Sohail Khan, Hassan Ali, Aamir Yamin, Fakhr Zaman.

Millions vote in Delhi civic polls amid EVM glitches

IANS | New Delhi |

Millions of men and women on Sunday voted amid EVM glitches to pick three new municipal bodies in an election crucial for all three main contenders — the BJP, Congress and the AAP.

At least 42 per cent of the 1.32 crore electorate had exercised their franchise when 9.5 hours of polling ended at 5.30 pm, the turnout hit by intense midday heat.

Residents reported "low" voting in many areas but in many others there were long queues of men and women keen to pick three wings of a municipal corporation that covers almost the whole of Delhi.

The balloting was peaceful but both voters and political parties reported numerous cases of malfunctioning of the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), which themselves have come under a cloud.

The Aam Aadmi Party, which rules Delhi, and the Congress want to end the 10-year reign of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the civic body, citing poor upkeep of the city's cleanliness.

The BJP used Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal to reclaim the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (104 seats), South Delhi Municipal Corporation (104 seats) and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (64 seats).

Polling did not take place in two wards – Maujpur in East Delhi and Sarai Pipal Thala in North Delhi – where a candidate each of the Samajwadi Party died.

Even as the polling was on, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said reports of EVM malfunctioning came from all over the capital. He also tweeted that many people with voter slips were not allowed to vote.

BJP leader Arvinder Singh Lovely, who recently quit the Congress, could not vote because the EVM in his polling station – there were 13,022 in all – broke down.

By 3 p.m., the AAP "War Room" reported 250 calls from voters complaining about non-functional EVMs. The complaints came from several areas including Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia's constituency Patparganj.

A Maharashtra Congress leader, Shehzad Poonawala, tweeted about the EVMs in Delhi: "Better we call them (E)xtremely (V)ulnerable (M)achines."

A total of 2,537 candidates were in the fray.

Among others who contested the election are the Bahujan Samaj Party, Samajwadi Party, Janata Dal-United and Swaraj India of Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan who were earlier Kejriwal's colleagues in the AAP.

The three civic bodies cover 68 of the 70 assembly constituencies in Delhi. The two smaller civic bodies are the Delhi Cantonment Board as well as the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC).

Lt Governor Anil Baijal, Kejriwal, Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken and Delhi BJP leaders were among the early voters.

"I urge the people of Delhi to vote for a filth-free Delhi, a dengue- and chikungunya-free Delhi," said Kejriwal after voting along with his family.

Asked if the election was a referendum on his government's two-year performance, he replied: "We will see when the results come (on Wednesday)."

Maken rooted for the Congress.

"The BJP has done enough damage for 10 years. The only thing it has done is engaging in verbal duels with the AAP. People want sensible governance. Going by Congress' track record, they will vote for us," he said.

BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi blamed the Kejriwal government for the capital mess and said she was confident her party would again control the civic body.

Some voters complained of poor organisation.

"Voter slips have not been given to many. This has created a lot of confusion. My wife and I didn't get any voter slips," Amit Basu, a voter from Chittaranjan Park in south Delhi, told IANS.

Through the day, EVMs which broke down were either quickly repaired or replaced by functional ones.

Sonakshi doesn’t believe in pleasing everybody

PTI | Mumbai |

Actress Sonakshi Sinha says she believes in doing things on her own terms and conditions as she has realised that making everyone happy through her work is not possible.

The actress says just like anybody else, she too went through a phase where she was going all out to please others while neglecting her own happiness.

“There are times in life when you reach a saturation point, trying to please everyone but yourself. Self acceptance is very important. For me, I've always tried to be as real as I can because that's the only way I know,”Sonakshi told.

“I learnt very early in life that you can't please everyone, so don't even try. Then you realise it's not worth it. I've to be happy in what I am doing, only then I'll be able to make others happy.”

Sonakshi feels this approach to life has helped her in the industry so far and not give in to the “pressure” of what others expect her to do.

“If you like me, great, if you don't, it's fine. Which is why I've been able to work on my own conditions, do the work I want to do and not succumb to any kind of pressure from anyone,” she says.

While Sonakshi has featured in hit Bollywood pot boilers like Dabangg, Rowdy Rathore and R Rajkumar, it is her performance in movies like Lootera and Akira which have impressed the critics.

Sonakshi is aware that there is an audience which wants her to experiment and feels she will try something new only when she wants to.

“I think it's very flattering that people understand what you're capable of and they expect that from you. It's very flattering when people say 'oh you should do stuff like that, there's so much you can do, your potential is so much.

“It will happen in time, but just not on their (audience) time. It will happen on the right time, when I want it to happen and am ready to do it.”

In her career of more than half a decade, the actress has witnessed both highs and lows, something which she says she learnt to deal with looking at her actor-turned-politician father Shatrughan Sinha.

“I've seen my father handle, success and failure, in a very dignified, calm and composed manner. He is unfazed by these things. The very fact that I've seen him do this, I have also imbibed the quality where things don't really faze me.

“It's okay if certain things didn't go as planned. We will try again with next film. I don't get bogged down or bothered by these things (failure of films),” Sonakshi adds.

The 29-year-old actress says in her family, she has been brought up in such a way that she treats failure and success equally.

“When a film does really well, you won't see me going on rooftops and shouting about it; when it (film) doesn't work you won't see me sitting in a corner and dwelling about it.

“Life goes on, irrespective. Success and failure is part of everybody's life. Be it a student in school or even the prime minister, anyone. If there are no ups and downs, what kind of life is that?”

Arun Jaitley raises H-1B visa issue with US authorities

IANS | Washington |

The vexed issue of the Trump administration mulling curbs in H-1B visas has been taken up with by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley with the American authorities during his ongoing visit, an Indian official said on Sunday.

The issue was raised by Jaitley during his meeting with US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin here on Saturday, an Indian Finance Ministry statement said.

"Finance Minister Arun Jaitley raised the issue of H-1B visas for skilled professionals from India and highlighted the contribution which Indian companies and professionals are making to US economy," it said.

The issue stems from recent executive orders signed by US President Donald Trump which indicate a possible tightening of the H-1B visas.

"Issues related to terror funding were also discussed and the US Treasury Secretary appreciated the role of India in this regard, including Indo-US cooperation in FATF (Financial Action Task Force)," the statement said.

"Critical economic issues like Indo-US Investment Initiative, infrastructure collaboration, National Investment and Infrastructure Fund, collaboration with USA for smart cities development, etcetera, were deliberated upon during the meeting," it added.

Jaitley is on a five-day visit to the US to attend the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

According to the Finance Ministry, Jaitley also held bilateral meetings with the Finance Ministers of Sweden, France and Bangladesh, as well as with World Bank President Jim Yong Kim.

Meanwhile, the US, in turn, has alleged that Indian IT companies were unfairly cornering the major share of H-1B visas by putting extra tickets in the lottery system, which the current US administration wants to replace with a more merit-linked immigration policy.

"The top recipients of the H-1B visa are companies like Tata, Infosys, Cognizant — they will apply for a very large number of visas, more than they get, by putting extra tickets in the lottery raffle, if you will, and then they'll get the lion's share of visas," a senior US official said at a White House briefing last week, according to transcripts posted on the White House website.

"And those three companies are companies that have an average wage for H-1B visas between $60,000 and $65,000. By contrast, the median Silicon Valley (US) software engineer's wage is probably around $150,000," the official said.

Govt to ensure 60-yr limit followed for senior citizen benefit

PTI | New Delhi |

The government wants ministries, departments and also private agencies to adopt '60 years' as the uniform age criterion to define senior citizens as to address anomalies in extending benefits to the elderly.

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is contemplating to bring in an amendment in the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens (MWPSC) Act, 2007, to implement this change.

The MWPSC Act defines senior citizens as any person who is a citizen of India and has attained the age of '60 years and above'.

The phrase '… and above' is being manipulated by several agencies to deny benefits under senior-citizen clauses by adopting different age limits, a government official said.

“It came to our notice that several government departments have adopted different age criteria for extending the benefits and the concessions meant for the elderly. Similarly, some private insurance companies have set different age limits,” the official said.

The eligibility criteria for extending travel concessions to senior citizens by Air India was until recently 63 years. Last week, the national carrier lowered it to 60 years.

According to the official, the Air India issue was taken up by former social justice minister Kumari Selja during the previous UPA government but had remained unresolved.

The Social Justice Ministry again took it up recently with Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju, following which the age limit was revised.

In the Indian Railways, the eligibility for availing of concessions in the basic fares for women is '58 years and above' while for men it is '60 years and above'.
