Police brace for influx from Assam to Manipur

IANS | Imphal |

Manipur Police have tightened security to check the possible influx of migrants after a draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) published in neighbouring Assam has sparked fears that many may be declared non-Indians.

Director General of Police L.M. Khaute has supervised security measures along the Assam-Manipur border on the state’s eastern side to check entry of outsiders whose names are not on the NRC.

On Monday, the Assam government published the draft which includes names of 1.9 crore people of of the total 3.29 crore applicants. The process of updating the NRC began in 2013 and it was carried out under the guidance and instructions of the Supreme court.

As many as 68.27 lakh families comprising of 3.29 crore applicants had submitted 6.5 crore documents in support of their citizenship claims.

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh said: “Additional police and paramilitary personnel have been rushed to Jiribam district to ensure that undesirable persons do not enter (our state).”

Police in Jiribam have demolished six bamboo bridges across Jiri river, a detour route migrants use to avoid security checks.

Security personnel were also deployed at the Mao gate as many migrants might enter Manipur from the National Highway-2 that links Manipur, Nagaland and Assam, the police said.

Police are also being deployed along the Assam-Tamenglong highway and Jessami in Ukhrul district.

Authorities had conducted security checks in Jiribam district where some people without identity cards were detained. Some were found to be using fake voter IDs.

Samajwadi Party calls opposition meet to discuss EVMs

IANS | Lucknow, |

The Samajwadi Party has called a meeting of opposition parties on Saturday to discuss the “functioning of electronic voting machines (EVMs)” and to “join hands in opposing the future use of EVMs”, said a party leader on Thursday.

Party state unit chief Naresh Uttam said he had written to the leaders of the Congress, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Rashtriya Lok Dal, Lok Dal, Communist Party of India and CPI-M, inviting them for the meet.

The BSP has refused to attend. All other parties, except the Congress, have confirmed they will take part. It is also seen as an effort to forge opposition unity before the general elections in 2019.

Parties that lost to the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections in early 2017 have been alleging manipulation of the EVMs in favour of the BJP.

The Samajwadi Party has demanded that all future elections should be held under the old and time-tested ballot paper system as they “had lost faith in the EVMs”.

BSP chief Mayawati has for long been alleging that the EVMs have been tampered to electorally benefit the BJP.

DMK to back AIADMK MPs for AIIMS-style facility in Tamil Nadu: Stalin

IANS | Chennai |

DMK leader M.K. Stalin on Thursday said his party’s Rajya Sabha members would cooperate with their AIADMK counterparts in the Lok Sabha for getting a facility on the lines of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Tamil Nadu.

In a statement here, Stalin said the Central government has failed to fulfil its promise of setting up an AIIMS in Tamil Nadu despite making an announcement in the 2015-16 Union Budget.

According to Stalin, an expert team from the Central government in 2015 had visited the five sites (Thanjavur, Madurai, Pudukottai, Erode and Chengalpattu) offered by the Tamil Nadu government for setting up the AIIMS.

After the state government delayed information asked by the Central government to proceed further, the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court, in August this year, had ordered the Central government to finalise the location by December 31.

But till date, the location has not been finalised, Stalin said, urging the Central government to take immediate steps to build an AIIMS in the state.

Dia will be seen playing the role of Sanjay’s wife Manyata in the biopic.

“I’m very very excited about the Dutt biopic and my work in it. I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself by thinking about the fact that it might take my career as an actor in a new direction,” Dia told IANS.

The biopic features Ranbir Kapoor as the protagonist. It also stars Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala, Karishma Tanna, Vicky Kaushal and Jim Sarbh.

After winning the Miss Asia Pacific 2000 title, Dia made her Bollywood debut in 2001 with the film “Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein”.

Despite having a successful debut, she could not sustain the golden run in the Hindi film industry. She featured in Bollywood films like “Deewaanapan”, “Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge”, “Dum” and “Kurbaan” that bombed at the box office.

Apart from acting, Dia has stepped into the filmmaking business. She co-owns a production house, Born Free Entertainment, with her husband Sahil Sangha. Her last production venture was “Bobby Jasoos” in 2014.

Qatar Open: Thiem wins; Rublev sets up quarterfinal against Coric

Dominic Thiem of Austria survived the upset wave by getting past Slovenia’s Aljaz Bedene

IANS | Doha |

Top seed Dominic Thiem of Austria survived the upset wave by getting past Slovenia’s Aljaz Bedene 7-5, 6-4 in the Qatar Open tennis tournament here while Russia’s Andrey Rublev withstood Spain’s Fernando Verdasco to set up a quarterfinal tie against Borna Coric.

Thiem made a strong start breaking Bedene to take a 4-1 lead but Bedene fought back to level the set at 4-4 on Wednesday. Thiem then missed three set points before converting on his fourth to win a close first set 7-5 when Bedene hit a Forehand wide.

In the second set, Bedene put up a stiff resistance as he came under repeated pressure from the top seed. The World No. 49 saved nine of 10 breakpoints but a lone break was sufficient for Thiem to close out the match in straight sets.

After the match, Thiem said that he was pleased to get through in straight sets. “It was a tough match, but I expected it and had two tough matches which I both won in straight sets. So I think that’s a perfect start to the New Year. If you have to fight a lot, if you have to suffer a bit, I think it’s very good like this. You get a lot of tough situations already in the first matches, and that’s why I’m happy with the start.”

Rublev withstood a late charge from veteran Fernando Verdasco to win through in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. The young Russian did not serve well in windy conditions and both players were inconsistent splitting the first two sets.

But in the third set, the quality of play improved and Rublev was able to get the crucial break with some consistent tennis. When serving for the match, Rublev faced two break points as Verdasco came up with some big forehands.

But Rublev held on strong and brought up match point with a forehand winner. Rublev completed the win with a strong serve to set up a quarterfinal against Borna Coric who won through easily against Nikoloz Basilashvili.

Rublev elaborated on the reasons for his win. “I think in third set, I was quite focused. I was quite calm. I was not showing emotions. I was trying to focus on the points and the rallies. That was the main part when I start to play a little bit better. And then I win.”

Eight seed Feliciano Lopez also bit the dust against qualifier Mirza Basic 6-4, 7-6(2). But crowd favourite Gael Monfils came through against Jan Lennard Struff 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

Aadhaar data fully safe, no breach possible: UIDAI

IANS | New Delhi |

Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on Thursday denied breach or leak of Aadhaar data after a newspaper reported it bought unrestricted access to the details of over one billion Aadhaar numbers — for just Rs 500.

“The Aadhaar data, including biometric information, is fully safe and secure,” the authority said in a statement, calling the report in Media”a case of misreporting”.

“UIDAI assures that there has not been any Aadhaar data breach,” the statement said, adding that the data was secure with a “robust uncompromised security”.

The authority said it had given search facility for the purpose of grievance redressal to designated personnel and state government officials to help residents only by entering their 12-digit Aadhaar numbers.

The grievance redressal search facility, the statement said, “gives only limited access to name and other details and has no access to biometric details”.

It said the authority maintains complete log and traceability of its search facility and any misuse was traceable.

“The reported case appears to be instance of misuse of the grievance redressal Aadhaar data based fully Secured search facility. As UIDAI maintains complete log and traceability of the facility, the legal action including lodging of FIR against the persons involved in the instant case is being done.”

The Aadhaar database “remains fully safe and secure with highest encryption at UIDAI and mere display of demographic information cannot be misused without biometrics”.

It said 12-digit ID number was not secret and had to be shared with authorized agencies whenever an Aadhaar holder wishes to avail certain service or benefit of government welfare schemes.

“That does not mean that the proper use of Aadhaar number poses a security or financial threat. Also, mere availability of Aadhaar number will not be a security threat (and) will not lead to financial (or) other fraud, as for a successful authentication fingerprint or iris of individual is also required.

“Claims of bypassing or duping the Aadhaar enrolment system are totally unfounded. The UIDAI Data Centres are infrastructure of critical importance and is protected accordingly with high technology conforming to the best standards of security and also by legal provisions.”

UIDAI slams media report

The Media report, which was widely shared on social media sites, claimed that it took just Rs 500 and 10 minutes for the newspaper to get an access through an “agent” to every detail of any individual submitted to the UIDAI, including name, address, postal code (PIN), photo, phone number and email.

The newspaper said it paid another Rs 300, for which the “agent” provided “software” to facilitate the printing of the Aadhaar card after entering the Aadhaar number of any individual.

The Media also claimed to have found in its investigation that the racket may have started around six months ago when some anonymous groups were created on WhatsApp.

These groups targeted over three lakh village-level enterprise operators hired by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (ME&IT) under the Common Service Centres Scheme (CSCS) across India, offering them access to UIDAI data.

CSCS operators were initially entrusted with the task of making Aadhaar cards across the country but were withdrawn later. The service was restricted to post offices and designated banks to avoid any security breach in November last year.

China’s Arunachal statement, transgression, raised in Lok Sabha

IANS | New Delhi |

An incident of a Chinese road construction party entering Indian territory and Beijing’s statement on not recognising Arunachal Pradesh was raised in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

Revolutionary Socialist Party member N.K. Premchandran urged the government to make a statement on the incident.

“Chinese entered Indian territory, there were attempts to construct a road. Up to one kilometre they constructed. They were then stopped by people and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police force.

“They had come up till the Siang river basin, so my point is upper Siang basin is being aggressed upon,” Premchandran said.

“Further the Chinese spokesperson openly stated that Beijing has never recognised the state of Arunachal Pradesh. It is a provoking statement on China’s part,” he added.

“I would like to know the response of government of India on the Chinese aggression,” he said.

A road building party from China entered Indian territory in a remote part of Arunachal Pradesh in December-end and were sent back by the Indian troops.

Around December 26, they were found constructing a track around two kilometres away from the nearest Indo-Tibetan Border Police post.

A nearly 600 metre long and 12 feet wide track was constructed on Indian territory when the Chinese party was stopped.

The area where the Chinese workers entered is close to the place where Brahmaputra river enters India.

Indian troops pushed back the labourers and seized the equipment. While there was no confrontation between troops on both side, Indian troops have barricaded the area since and have been guarding it.

Asked about the incident, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said: “First of all, on border issues with India, China is clear and consistent.

“We never acknowledge the existence of so-called Arunachal Pradesh,” Geng said.

Swift wants ‘Shake it off’ copyright suit dismissed

IANS | Los Angeles |

Singer Taylor Swifts lawyers have asked a federal judge to dismiss the copyright lawsuit regarding her 2014 hit track “Shake it off“.

According to the lawyers’ argument on Wednesday, the phrase “players gonna play and haters gonna hate” is a musical cliché that should be in the public domain, reports variety.com.

In a footnote, they also cited numerous other references to “players” and “haters” in pop culture, including the 1977 song “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac, which includes the lyric — “Players only love you when they are playing“, and “Playa hater“, the 1997 Notorious B.I.G. song.

Swift was sued in September, 2017 by songwriters Sean Hall and Nathan Butler. They have also co-penned “Playas gon’ play” for the girl group 3LW in 2001.

The chorus of that song includes the phrase, “Playas, they gonna play, and haters, they gonna hate“.
