Deposit money as directed, Tihar is not far: Supreme Court to Jaypee

IANS | New Delhi |

The Supreme Court on Wednesday told Jaypee Associates to deposit Rs 125 crore as directed failing which it would be held in contempt of court and could land in Tihar Jail.

The amount is part of the Rs 2,000 crore that the top court had directed Jaypee Associates to deposit with its registry to pay the home buyers of Jaypee Infratech seeking a refund of their money.

Jaypee Associates has to deposit the Rs 125 crore by January 25.

A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud also directed Jaypee Associates to file an affidavit stating all the housing projects they were developing.

The court said that it would only at a later stage see an application by the Reserve Bank of India seeking the top court’s nod for initiating proceedings under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) against Jaypee Associates.

Atletico Madrid, Valencia advance in Copa del Rey

Nemanja Maksimovic added a goal six minutes later and Vietto completed the hat trick in the 66th minute.

Yannick Carrasco, Kevin Gameiro and Vitolo Machin got the goals as Atletico Madrid beat Lleida 3-0 here to win a Copa del Rey round of 16 tie by a decisive 7-0 on aggregate.

Though the contest was virtually a formality after Atleti dominated the third-division side in the first leg, coach Diego Simeone fielded a potent lineup led by Carrasco, Diego Costa and Fernando Torres, reports Efe.

Lleida, with nothing to lose, demonstrated plenty of ambition, matching the Colchoneros in chances for the first 25 minutes and keeping the hosts off the scoreboard until the 58th minute, when Carrasco connected with an assist from Costa.

Gameiro, who came on for Costa after the first goal, made it 2-0 on the night with a strike in the 74th minute and Vitolo added a third in the 81st.

In Tuesday’s other match, Luciano Vietto had a hat trick as Valencia pounded visiting Las Palmas 4-0 to win 5-1 on aggregate.

Vietto, in only his second outing for Valencia, scored in the 30th minute and again in the 48th to put the hosts up 3-1 on aggregate against an ineffectual Las Palmas.

Nemanja Maksimovic added a goal six minutes later and Vietto completed the hat trick in the 66th minute.

Gujarat to conduct census to ascertain presence of tigers

PTI | Ahmedabad |

Gujarat, which houses a rich population of lions, will now see an exercise to find out if tigers also inhabit the state.

The last time a tiger was spotted in Gujarat was way back in 1985. Now, over three decades later, a census has been planned next month to ascertain the presence of the striped animal in the forest of Dang district.

The state forest department earlier sent a proposal to the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) for the census after some media reports suggested the presence of tigers in Dang, which is full of green forests.

The proposal was approved by the NTCA, a statutory body under the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests, Gujarat’s principal chief conservator of forest (wildlife), G K Sinha, said.

Till the early 80s, there were tigers in Gujarat, mainly inhabiting the forests of Dang, Narmada and Sabarkantha districts, he said.

“The last tiger died in a road accident in Dang in 1985. No tiger was seen in the state after that. Locals generally confuse hyenas with tigers and that is how they assume there are tigers in Gujarat forests,” Sinha said.

“We requested the NTCA to include Dang in the tiger census because there are some reports in the media about tigers having been sighted in the area. Some villagers also say they saw tigers,” he said.

The state forest department sent a team in July last year to survey the area to ascertain the presence of tigers but the report was negative.

“Our surveys have shown a negative possibility of tigers in the state, but to put the debate to rest, we decided to include the area (Dang forests) in the census. If there is any such possibility, the census will bring it to its logical end,” Sinha said.

After the NTCA agreed for the tiger census in Dang, three officials of the state forest department were sent for training in Assam for the purpose, he said.

The counting exercise in Dang will be a part of the nationwide tiger census being conducted by the Wildlife Institute of India on the directions of the NTCA, the official said.

Notably, Gujarat boasts of a sizable population of lions, which are a major tourist attraction.

As per the last census conducted in 2015, there are about 650 lions, mainly inhabiting the forests of Gir Somnath, Amreli and Bhavnagar districts in Saurashtra region of the state.

Facebook may soon launch home video chat product

IANS | San Francisco |

In a reported bid to enter the hardware product market, Facebook is planning to launch a home video chat product titled “Portal” in May that will compete with Amazon’s Echo Show and Google Assistant-enabled touchscreens.

According to a report by online news network Cheddar on Wednesday, “Portal” will be the first finished hardware product from Facebook’s secretive Building 8 lab and may see the light of the day in May — the time when Facebook organises its annual F8 developer conference.

The report claimed that Facebook plans to sell the device for $499 through pop-up stores as well as online.

“Portal” is seen as a competition to Amazon Echo Show and four Google Assistant-powered smart speakers that were launched at CES 2018 this week.

The four new smart displays include devices made by Sony, Samsung-owned JBL, LG and Lenovo.

These devices feature a touchscreen that can be used to display visual information to accompany its responses, as well as play video and conduct video calls.

“Portal” will be equipped with a wide-angle lens that is capable of recognising individual faces and associating them with their Facebook accounts.

The social media giant also intends to let “Portal” access outside streaming services like Spotify and Netflix.

Toyota recalls over 600,000 vehicles due to airbag problem

IANS |

Toyota Motor North America announced on Tuesday it was expanding its safety recall involving Takata front passenger airbag inflators as required by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The expansion involves approximately 601,300 additional vehicles in the UN, Xinhua quoted a Toyota spokesperson as saying.

Takata and its US entity TK Holdings Inc filed for bankruptcy in June. The Japanese auto-parts giant said it was recalling more than 100 million of its air bag inflators across the world through the end of 2019.

By the end of November 2017, 19 automakers had recalled 46 million Takata inflators in 34 million US vehicles, according to NHTSA.

Takata agreed in 2016 to plead guilty to wire fraud and pay a total of $1 billion in criminal penalties to resolve a US Justice Department investigation.

We need to play enough matches away: India football captain Sunil Chhetri

India qualified for the Asian Cup by beating Macau in the qualifiers last year in October.

IANS |

India captain Sunil Chhetri wants the national football team to play more away games this year as it prepares for the AFC Asian Cup in 2019.

Chhetri, who is currently playing for Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League (ISL), feels each and every player who dons the India colours needs to raise his game by a few notches so that coach Stephen Constantine has a headache while picking the team every time.

“We need to play enough matches away. We generally do well at home, but our away record hasn’t been good. We should try to get teams from 16 to 8 (AFC rankings) ranking. It’s difficult to play South Korea and Japan as they don’t want to play us. We should get teams who are better than us and play at their home. This is from the organisation side,” Chhetri told IANS in an interview here.

“From the players’ side, we need to improve ourselves individually, making sure that the competition for the national team increases and it is a big headache for the coach. It should be tough for him to choose the players and whenever that happens he gets the cream,” the 33-year-old said.

India qualified for the Asian Cup by beating Macau in the qualifiers last year in October.

The last time India played in the world’s second-oldest continental football championship was in 2011 under British coach Bob Houghton. Chhetri was an integral part of the team, scoring two goals in the group stages in what was only India’s third appearance.

India did not win a match and bowed out, letting in 13 goals and scoring just three.

Chhetri said India should look to play teams like the United Arab Emirates (UAE), who are also hosting the Asian Cup, on the road.

“We are at the bottom, man. Whoever we get is going to be better than us,” Chhetri said when asked to name the teams they should play friendlies with leading up to the tournament, starting in January next year.

“In 2011, we got No 1, No 3 and No 5 — Australia, South Korea, Bahrain (in the main round). It couldn’t have been worse than that mathematically. This time we got Kyrgyzstan, Macau and Myanmar (in the qualifiers). With due respect to them it wasn’t very difficult.

“We should aim to play the UAE, Qatar, Oman, Palestine and Lebanon (in the friendlies),” Chhetri said.

There are talks of a four-nation Champions Cup taking place this year in India. Chhetri said the tourney would have no bearing on India’s rankings as it is outside the FIFA dates, but the match practice would do a world of good to India’s preparations.

“Now it’s not about the rankings, because we have qualified. Having said that, the arrangements of the groups matter in terms of ranking but keeping all these things aside, playing at home those three-four nation tournament…I hope we get better teams to play against,” he said.

Coming to his club Bengaluru FC, which is at the top of the ISL standings now, Chhetri said it doesn’t have the pressure of expectations and takes one game at a time.

“The motto in our club is to think about the next game — the way we won two Federation Cups and the I-League by taking one game at a time. The motto has not changed,” he said.

Just married to long-time girlfriend Sonam, daughter of former India and Mohun Bagan defender Subrata Bhattacharya, Chhetri signed off tongue-in-cheek, saying he now knows the prices of “onions and tomatoes”.

“The last 10-15 days after marriage… I have enjoyed my time. I think me and Sonam have seen each other for 13 years but we never lived with each other. She was always a tourist wherever I played. Now living together, it’s nice, man. More because, apart from the fact that she is my wife and I love her… we are also very good friends,” he said.

“She understands my job. So there was no need of telling her that I have to come back and sleep and take a nap… everything is nice because she understands. Later in the evening we watch Netflix. We go for walks. We went to buy grocery the other day and I realised I haven’t taken walks for a long time. I know the rates of onions and tomatoes now (laughs).”

Youth kills Andhra girl for spurning his love

IANS | Hyderabad |

In yet another case of crime against women, a jilted lover allegedly stabbed a girl to death for spurning his advances.

B. Janaki, 24, working as a sales girl in a supermarket, was killed when her colleague allegedly stabbed her in her house in Moosapet here on Tuesday, police said on Wednesday.

The girl, hailing from Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh, was alone in the house when Anantappa alia Anand barged in, entered into an argument with her and then attacked her with a knife.

When Janaki’s roommate Rupa returned home, she found her unconscious in a pool of blood. She alerted the neighbours, who shifted Janaki to a nearby hospital, where she succumbed late Tuesday.

Police said Anand, who was working with Janaki in the supermarket in KPHB, had been harassing her as she had spurned his advances. He had come to her house about 10 days ago and had threatened to kill her.

Police said the accused was absconding and a special team was formed to nab him.

Carlos Tevez hoping for Argentina recall ahead of World Cup

“I have a few years of football left,” Tevez told reporters. “Being in a World Cup for a player of my age would be something very nice.”

IANS |

Carlos Tevez said that he hopes his return to Boca Juniors will help him earn a recall to Argentina’s national team ahead of this year’s World Cup.

The 33-year-old former Manchester United, Manchester City and Juventus forward made the last of his 76 appearances for the Albiceleste in October 2015, reports Xinhua news agency.

“I have a few years of football left,” Tevez told reporters. “Being in a World Cup for a player of my age would be something very nice.”

Tevez rejoined his boyhood club last week after leaving Shanghai Shenhua, where he failed to impress during a dismal 12-month spell.

“I want to enjoy these next two years with Boca because it’s the last thing I have left,” he said.

Tevez was a part of Argentina’s 2006 and 2010 World Cup squads but was overlooked for the 2014 tournament in Brazil.

The 2018 World Cup will be played in Russia from June 14 to July 15.

Liverpool players, former and present, react to Philippe Coutinho’s departure

Barcelona signed the Brazilian for a mammoth fee of €160 million on Monday.

SNS | New Delhi |

Philippe Coutinho on Monday was officially revealed as a Barcelona’s most expensive signing of all-time and while Liverpool fans were indignant at the way the Brazilian pushed for a move, most of his former teammates were quick to pay tribute to the fleet-footed midfielder.

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who was at the club in a playing capacity when Coutinho joined in 2013 and is currently managing the U-18 side, was effusive in his praise:

Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah, who has been in sensational form this season, had this to say on the twinkle-toed midfielder:

Current Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson admitted he would miss the Brazilian but wished him well as he posted:

Reds centre-back Dejan Lovren’s touching post was well-received by his followers:

And lastly, but certainly not the least, former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, expressed his delight at reuniting with his former colleague at Barcelona:

Coutinho’s €160 million move was the culmination of a saga that started in the summer of 2017, when Barcelona saw several offers fail to dislodge Liverpool’s no-sale policy.

The Brazilian midfielder, who had arrived at Anfield for a relative bargain price of £8.3 million in January 2013, had his head turned by the Catalan giants’ pursuit but the Reds stood firm and managed to keep the Brazilian beyond the transfer deadline.
