Winter must-haves for men

Winter gives limited options to style up, especially for men, but layering it differently and accessorising it properly can do the trick.

IANS | Mumbai |

Winter gives limited options to style up fashionably, especially for men, but layering it differently and accessorising it properly can do the trick.

James Doidge and Sandeep Gonsalves,  share some interesting winter must-haves for an effortless style.

* For winter, layering is key for men’s dressing. Wearing a lightweight knit such as a merino crew neck jumper under a sports-inspired bomber jacket is a great way to dress for the colder weather.

winter, fashion, jacket, comfort

* For something slightly warmer you can’t go wrong with a cashmere jumper. The super soft knit is perfect for feeling comfy in the cold.

* For a more casual look swap a merino jumper for a sports-inspired sweatshirt. Layer over a classic white tee and pair with jeans and trainers for a laidback weekend look.

* For truly cold days, wearing a thermal vest or pant is essential. They are everyday basics that you can wear under most looks throughout winter to keep warm with minimum effort.

* Lastly, accessorising with a chic scarf, simple beanie or classic leather gloves is an easy way to finish winter outfits.

* Slim fit silhouettes that are extravagant and upbeat create a dynamic structure and are trending this winter with an emphasis on fabric and texture.

* A quality winter coat in a neutral colour is a versatile piece of clothing that is always a good choice and available in different styles and patterns allowing one to choose from a long line trench coat or a chunky coat that goes up till the waist. Worsted wool, tweed, leather and corduroy fabrics work best for this season.

formals

* Another winter wardrobe essential would be the simple and practical raincoat that makes for a great layer in case of unexpected downpours.

* Longer, more streamlined coats like overcoats and trench coats add a hint of sophistication and elegance that works best for office and everyday looks. One can go for neutral and subdued shades, keeping them easy to blend in and complement with a range of formal and smart casual outfits. For a formal look, one can layer a trench coat over a full suit or stay more relaxed with a pair of slim fit jeans and a turtleneck jumper.

* For a glam party look, one can opt for velvet dinner jackets in hues of black and emerald to add a hint of opulence for a festive vibe.

* Warm accessories like hats, gloves and scarves are a necessity to complete your look and keep you warm at the same time. One can accessorise their outfit with a pair of gold cuff-links, collar bar, tie bar or lapel pins.

* Gold is much warmer than silver in general and creates a more winter look. A pair of sturdy and warm boots are a winter classic that help to keep the feet dry. A good lace-up pair or more formal monk strap footwear works well too.

Use national flag made of paper not plastic: MHA

SNS | New Delhi |

Centre has issued an advisory to states and Union Territories (UT) to ensure strict compliance of the flag code, ahead of the Republic Day and has urged everyone not to use national flag made of plastic on important national, cultural and sports events. Only flags made of paper should be used, the directive says.

In an advisory to the states and Union Territories, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said the national flag represents the hopes and aspirations of the people of the country and hence should occupy a position of honour.

The advisory on paper-made national flags should be used by public in terms of the provisions of the ‘Flag Code of India, 2002’ and such paper flags are not to be discarded or thrown on the ground after the event.

The ministry said that it has been brought to its notice that during important events, national flags made of plastic are also being used.

Since the plastic flags are not biodegradable like paper flags, they do not get decomposed for a long time. Ensuring appropriate disposal of national flag made of plastic commensurate with dignity of the flag, the advisory said.

PTI | New Delhi |

The Income Tax Department on Wednesday conducted country-wide searches at over 100 stores and other premises belonging to two major south-India based jewellery chains on charges of alleged tax evasion, official sources said.

BCCI’s backdated 5-month ban on Yusuf Pathan to end on Jan 14

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

All-rounder Yusuf Pathan, on Tuesday, was slapped with a backdated five months ban by the Board of Control for India in Cricket (BCCI) on the grounds of a doping violation which will end after four days from now.

The BCCI in a release said Yusuf Pathan had “inadvertently ingested a prohibited substance, which can be commonly found in cough syrups.”

In a decision which will leaves WADA and NADA officials in a tizzy, the board has back-dated the five-month suspension from 15 August 2017, meaning it will end on 14 January.

It will be interesting to see if other federations and association also follow this trend and the reaction of the WADA and NADA. Though it must be made clear here that BCCI is not a member of any of these agencies.

Pathan played 57 ODIs and 22 T20Is for India between 2008 and 2012, and was part of the squads that won the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 in 2007 and the 50-over World Cup in 2011.

According to the release, “Pathan had provided a urine sample as part of the BCCI’s anti-doping testing program during a domestic T20 competition on 16 March 2017 in New Delhi. His sample was subsequently tested and found to contain Terbutaline. Terbutaline, a specified substance, is prohibited both In & Out of Competition in the WADA Prohibited List of Substances.”

“On 27 October 2017, Pathan was charged with the commission of an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) under the BCCI Anti-Doping Rules (ADR) Article 2.1 and provisionally suspended pending determination of the charge. Pathan responded to the charge by admitting the ADRV and asserting that it was caused by his ingestion of a medication containing Terbutaline that had been mistakenly given to him instead of the medication prescribed for him, which did not contain any prohibited substance,” it further added.

CES 2018: Lenovo unveils Miix 630 2-in-1, Mirage Solo VR headset, Smart Display and more

The Lenovo Miix 630 2-in-1 sports a 12.3-inch WUXGA+ touchscreen display and ships with a detachable keyboard.

SNS |

On the second day of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018 here, Chinese multinational technology company Lenovo launched three new products to bring tech advancement in Virtual Reality (VR), tablet/PC and smart home devices – priced to reach out to a large segment of buyers.

The tablet/PC combines the capability and versatility of both and Lenovo ensured that the battery in the Lenovo Miix 630 2-in-1,  that runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 Mobile PC platform, lasts for 20 hours with full video playback.

The Lenovo Miix 630 2-in-1 sports a 12.3-inch WUXGA+ touchscreen display. It ships with a detachable keyboard and runs Windows 10 S. It comes bundled with a Windows Ink-supporting digital pen capable of 1,024 levels of pressure.

The Lenovo Miix 630 2-in-1 price starts at $799.99 and will go on sale from Q2 2018.

Lenovo Mirage Solo

Lenovo also extended its AR/VR range by launching “Mirage Solo” – a standalone Daydream VR headset with camera that is aimed at providing live streaming to users, thus bringing the near reality of a remote event taking place.

Lenovo Mirage Solo

The dual-camera, as a separate unit, can upload live pictures through the mobile phone or Wi-Fi to YouTube for those with the headset to experience it anywhere.

“The camera is capable of capturing the depth of field, as opposed to just flat images and its simple and easy to use,” said Bareda.

The main advantage of this device is that it’s standalone and does not have any cable connected to it which had been the bane of all such VR or AR devices. You can move anywhere with ease and watch 180 degree images in 3D.

Bareda said that earlier launch of the AR/VR headset linked to Star Wars was a resounding success and the latest device would bring in more capabilities as it has tied up with Google Daydream 2.0 platform.

The device will come with a launch of “Blade Runner 2049” in early second quarter, but the company is keeping the price under wraps for later announcement.

Introducing the product to journalists here on the sidelines of the CES 2018, Matt Bareda, Vice President, Marketing for PCs, AR/VR and Smart Devices at Lenovo said that its rollout in the second quarter would be a “game changer” that will bring in the hands of the users whatever is possible in the computing space.

Lenovo Smart Display

Priced at $799.99, the 12.3-inch tablet is connected to the keyboard magnetically and has a pen for easing up usage. An attached, hinged flap acts as a kickstand and can assume a wide range of angles.

“It brings in a tablet/PC format the concept that we are all used to in mobile phones – always on. No need to shut it down every time your usage is over,” said Bareda.

The Lenovo “Smart Display” aims to connect, inform, entertain and control with the help of Google Assistant, while sitting in the kitchen or drawing room.

Lenovo Smart Display

The Lenovo “Smart Display” basically looks like a mash-up between a tablet and a smart speaker. It can reach out to Internet for all the information that one requires, while also connecting people remotely through audio and video.

The device – in 10 inch and 8 inch formats – with Google Assistant will not only bring all entertainment to the screen on command but also has the capability of controlling all features of a smart home through voice command and can act as a video monitor for rooms or outside.

“You can tell the Google Assistant to pull the latest movie for showing, connect to a friend through video, show who’s at the door and bring the video on the latest dance steps that you want to practice,” Bareda said.

The company has put in a physical camera lock to obviate any accidental streaming out of live video from home or elsewhere. “This feature, although simple, was arrived at after interaction with users to protect privacy,” Bareda added.

The 10-inch Lenovo Smart Display is priced at $249.99, and the 8-inch device at $199.99. Both will be available for users early summer this year.

Yusuf Pathan’s case a pending one, says WADA

As per WADA Doping Code of 2015, a first-time offense automatically invokes a four-year suspension.

PTI |

Cricketer Yusuf Pathan might soon be completing BCCI’s retroactive five-month ban imposed on him for a first-time dope offense but as per the World Anti Doping Agency’s protocol, the case is an active one. Indian all-rounder Pathan was on Tuesday handed a five-month retrospective suspension for failing a dope test, a sanction which will end on January 14 after the BCCI accepted his plea that the violation was inadvertent.

“As this is a pending case, we are not in a position to comment,” informed Maggie Durand, WADA’s Manager, Media Relations and Communications in response to an email query by PTI whether the period of the ban imposed on him was WADA-compliant.

As per WADA Doping Code of 2015, a first-time offense automatically invokes a four-year suspension.

The BCCI had said in a statement, “Mr Yusuf Pathan has been suspended for a doping violation. Mr. Pathan had inadvertently ingested a prohibited substance, which can be commonly found in cough syrups.”

The 35-year-old Pathan, a member of the victorious Indian 2011 World Cup squad, had provided a urine sample as part of the BCCI’s anti-doping testing program during a domestic T20 competition on March 16 last year.

“His sample was subsequently tested and found to contain Terbutaline. Terbutaline, a specified substance, is prohibited both In and Out of Competition in the WADA Prohibited List of Substances,” the BCCI stated.

The all-rounder, who has played 57 ODIs and 22 T20 Internationals for India, was charged with the “commission of an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) under the BCCI Anti-Doping Rules (ADR) Article 2.1 and provisionally suspended pending determination of the charge”.

“Mr. Pathan responded to the charge by admitting the ADRV and asserting that it was caused by his ingestion of a medication containing Terbutaline that had been mistakenly given to him instead of the medication prescribed for him, which did not contain any prohibited substance,” the BCCI explained.

The BCCI said it is “satisfied” with Pathan’s explanation that he was using the medication to “treat an Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (URTI) and not as a performance-enhancing drug”.

“Having considered all of the evidence and taken expert external advice, the BCCI has accepted Mr Pathan’s explanation of the cause of his ADRV, and on that basis has agreed that a period of ineligibility of five months should apply, together with the disqualification of certain results,” the BCCI stated.

The BCCI said Pathan had been provisionally suspended on October 28 last year and the Board has now decided to back-date the period of his final suspension from August 15.

“…there is discretion under BCCI ADR Article 10.10.2 to back-date the start date of the period of ineligibility still further on account of Mr Pathan’s prompt admission of his ADRV upon being confronted with it by the BCCI, and under BCCI ADR Article 10.10.1 on account of the delays in the results management in this case that are not attributable to Mr Pathan.

“In all of the circumstances, the five-month period of ineligibility will be deemed to have started to run on 15 August 2017 and end at midnight on 14 January 2018,” the Board stated.

The development comes amid the BCCI’s stoic opposition to allow the National Anti-Doping Agency to test cricketers. The Board has refused to sign up with NADA despite repeated requests by the agency.

Significantly, the IPL players’ auction is scheduled this month-end at Bengaluru and Pathan, a regular in the Kolkata Knight Riders team, will become eligible to be included in the list of players after serving out his ban this Sunday.

The world needs to be told about Sikkim: A.R. Rahman

IANS | New Delhi |

Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman, who has been named as the first brand ambassador of Sikkim, hopes India becomes more inclusive towards the “fascinating” Northeast, which he feels is a treasure waiting to be explored.

“I always find the Northeast region fascinating. It is a part of India that we were not exposed to that much. In this move (appointment as brand ambassador), there is an opportunity for doing this. I think we should be more inclusive of the Northeast,” Rahman told IANS in an interview on the phone from Gangtok.

“For the past seven years, I have been saying that I have met some amazing musicians from the Northeast. I met Shillong Chamber Choir, which now has become popular and we can see them perform at several places. It is important to make them feel that they are a part of India.”

Rahman on Monday was officially announced the first brand ambassador of Sikkim at the onset of ‘The Red Panda Winter Carnival 2018′, which aims at increasing the flow of tourists by promoting the state’s bounty.

Talking to IANS after wrapping up the event, Rahman opened up about the “inspirational” move, and his future plans.

“Things like these inspire the whole nation. There is so much to take from here, from the people and from the land. How they make their life very self-sustaining, and are environmentally conscious of maintaining the gift of nature that God has given. They have done it beautifully.”

The Grammy winning Indian musician says he will chalk out a detailed plan to promote the state soon.

“It is more of an inspirational role because the officials said that both of us should keep the expectations very low. (We are looking at) cultural exchange and find spots through which we can expose Sikkim to the world. It is such a beautiful place. The world needs to be told about Sikkim, even though they know about it.”

How does he plan to work towards it?

“We are going to discuss it. We are in early stages of it.”

Rahman started his journey in the film industry with “Roja” in 1992, and went on to establish his signature of fusing various musical elements in his compositions which include classical and contemporary to very earthy sounds of nature. He has earned tags like “music maestro” and “Mozart of Madras”.

For 2018, Rahman’s work slate is full, and he is looking forward to challenging himself by entering new zones.

“’99 Songs’ — my first film as a producer and a writer and directed by Vishwesh Krishnamoorthy — will be releasing this year… There are other movies like ‘2.0’, and another couple of Tamil movies as well as some surprises (in the year). I am excited about all of it.”

Rahman’s film stars Manisha Koirala, Lisa Ray, Raghu Ram, and newcomers Ehan Bhat, Edilsy Varghese and Tenzin Dalha.

“We just released the cast clip. We are cutting the film and it is in post-production. Once we finish that, we will start releasing the songs one by one.”

What about his next international film?

“Ahhh… Yes (there is). But I can’t reveal anything. Maybe by the year-end, you will know something.”

Only laptops in Kerala schools

IANS | Thiruvananthapuram |

The Kerala government on Wednesday ordered that henceforth, only laptops and not desktops should be purchased for state-run schools.

The order is in line with a recommendation of the Technical Committee of the Education Department.

K. Anvar Sadath, Vice Chairman, Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education, the state government body that looks after the ICT needs of the schools, told IANS laptops have numerous advantage including portability, power backup and low energy consumption.

As a result of the order, 45,000 classrooms in close to 4,775 schools would be supplied 60,250 laptops and 43,750 projectors before this fiscal ends on March 31.

Sexual misconduct allegations not accurate: James Franco

IANS | Los Angeles |

Actor James Franco says the allegations of sexual misconduct against him are inaccurate.

Comedian and host Stephen Colbert brought up the recent allegations against Franco that emerged on Sunday following the actor’s Golden Globes win, while Franco was on Tuesday night’s “Late Show”, reports variety.com.

“First, I want to say that I do support it. Look, I was so excited to win but being in that room that night was incredible. It was powerful. I support change. There were some things on Twitter, I haven’t read them. I’ve heard about them,” said Franco.

He then addressed a vague and now-deleted tweet from Ally Sheedy, who Franco directed in a 2014 Broadway play. She had accused him of sexual misconduct.

“I have no idea what I did to Ally Sheedy…I had nothing but a great time with her. I have total respect for her. I have no idea why she was upset. She took the tweet down…I can’t speak for her,” he said.

“The things that I heard were on Twitter are not accurate, but I completely support people coming out and being able to have a voice because they didn’t have a voice for so long. So I don’t want to shut them down in any way, and I think it’s a good thing and I support it,” Franco added.

“I can’t live if there’s restitution to be made. If I’ve done something wrong, I will fix it. I have to. I don’t know what else to do. As far as the bigger issue of how we do it, I really don’t have the answers. I think the point of this whole thing is that we listen. I’m here to listen and learn and change my perspective where it’s off. I’m completely willing and want to”.

Opposition boycotts J-K CM’s speech

IANS | Jammu |

The opposition on Wednesday boycotted Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s speech in the Assembly demanding a statement on the killing of a youth in Kulgam district.

After the House met here, members from the National Conference and Congress and some independent legislators created uproar in the House, demanding a statement from the government on the Tuesday killing.

The youth was shot in Khudwani village when a mob clashed with the Army. He succumbed to his injury.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Abdul Rehman Veeri told the House that a magisterial probe had been ordered into the death. “It is a concern for us as well,” he said.

But National Conference leader Omar Abdullah said a statement on this sensitive issue should have come from the Chief Minister.

He said the Chief Minister would now deliver a long speech in response to the Governor’s address to the Assembly.

As Abdullah was speaking, Mehbooba Mufti came to the House but Abdullah continued to speak and then left. The entire opposition, including the Congress, followed Abdullah.

CES 2018: World’s smallest wearable device to monitor UV light exposure unveiled

PTI |

Scientists have developed the world’s smallest wearable device – a wafer-thin, feather-light sensor – that can fit on a fingernail and precisely measure a person’s exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun.

The broader goal is to provide a technology platform that can save lives and reduce skin cancers by allowing individuals, on a personalised level, to modulate their exposure to the sun, researchers said.

The device, as light as a raindrop, is powered by the sun and contains the world’s most sophisticated and accurate UV dosimeter, they said.

The device called UV Sense was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

“We think it provides the most convenient, most accurate way for people to measure sun exposure in a quantitative manner,” said John A Rogers from Northwestern University in the US.

UV Sense has no moving parts, no battery, is waterproof and can be attached to almost any part of the body or clothing, where it continuously measures UV exposure in a unique accumulation mode, researchers said.

Rogers said the device, created in a partnership with L’Oreal, is meant to stick on a thumbnail – a stable, rigid surface that ensures robust device adherence. It is also an optimal location to measure exposure to the sun.

“It also is one of the few sensors that directly measures the most harmful UV rays. Further, it simultaneously records body temperature, which is also very important in the context of sun exposure,” he said.

Users only need to download an app on their smartphone, then swipe the phone over the device to see their exposure to the sun, either for that day or over time. The app can suggest other, less UV-intense times for outdoor activities or give peace of mind to individuals who are concerned about overexposure.

“UV Sense is transformative technology that permits people to receive real-time advice via mobile phone messages when they exceed their daily safe sun limit,” said June K Robinson, research professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

The researchers have received a USD two million grant from the National Institutes of Health in the US to deploy the fingernail UV sensors in human clinical studies of sun exposure in cohorts of subjects who are at risk for melanoma.

The first pre-pilot field trials launched in December, researchers said.

Watch ‘Pari’ teaser: Anushka Sharma’s movie poster will send chills down your spine

SNS | New Delhi |

Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli’s wedding has been the talk of the town. The wedding pictures that released on the social media sites were goals. The duo had a fairytale wedding in Italy, where they were clad in Sabyasachi’s designer attires. Anushka was a beautiful bride but now those days are gone and she is all set to scare the hell out of us.

With her upcoming movie ‘Pari’, Anushka has adopted a new avatar that we have never seen before. In Phillauri we saw her as a ghost and she was maybe the sweetest ghost that you will bump into. The posters of the movie released last year and made us wonder what it is all about. Now, the motion picture has been released and we cannot keep calm after seeing that. ‘Pari’ will be out in the cinemas on 2nd March. It was earlier scheduled on 9th February, but to avoid the clash among ‘Sonu ke Titu Ke Sweety’ and ‘Aiyaary’ the release of the movie was shifted. According to the new release date, ‘Pari’ will not face any clashes and the suspense has already left the audience intrigued.

As the teaser begins, Anushka blankly stares at the camera and bloody scars and bruises gradually appear on her skin. Her expressionless face says a lot though and would make it difficult for you to look into her eyes. The teaser is spooky and raises curiosity in the viewers. Since the teaser is so intriguing, it would make the audience impatient for the release of the trailer.

After all the release date chaos of ‘Padmavat,’ many other movies did a shuffling of dates to avert clashes. However, ‘Padmavat’ will still clash with R. Balki’s ‘Padman’.

The team has now released a second poster of the film and it is even creepier. The suspense keeps increasing with every update of the film. Check out the new poster.

Mamata Banerjee hails Tashkent Declaration, remembers brave soldiers

PTI | Kolkata |

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday remembered the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1965 that ended with the signing of the Tashkent Declaration on this day.

The 1965 armed conflict between India and Pakistan was formally brought to an end by signing this declaration at Tashkent, the capital of the Republic of Uzbekistan in the Soviet Union, on January 10, 1966.

“On this day in 1966, the Tashkent Declaration brought to an end the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. Remembering the brave soldiers who gave their lives for the nation,” Banerjee wrote on her Twitter handle this morning.

Problem for release of ‘Padmavat’ in Goa?

SNS | New Delhi |

Though the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has cleared ‘Padmavat’ with a U/A certificate and suggested few modifications in the film, but it seems that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s problems are not ending yet.

After Rajasthan’s Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje stated that the film will not be released in Rajasthan as they don’t want people’s sentiments to get hurt, while Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, called the film controversial and said though he respected art, when people’s sentiments were involved then such matters should be discussed; the next in the list is Goa which has problem with the release of the film in the state.

The BJP’s state women’s wing demanded the government to ban the screening of the film in the state after the Goa Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s Mahila Morcha’s  president Sulakshana Sawant met CM Manohar Parrikar at his official residence.

The Goa Police have also recommended to the government to “avoid” the screening of “Padmavat” during peak tourist season due to its staff being engaged in security arrangements.

Now after three states considering the release of the movie as a matter of discussion, let’s see where the fate of the movie takes it to and how many controversies are still standing in the movie’s way of success. It needs to be seen if it be able to mark another success at box office for Sanjay Leela Bhansali Productions.
