India vs South Africa, 2nd Test: Proteas reach 78/0 till lunch on Day 1

Mohammed Shami disappointed by bowling fully-pitched deliveries which were milked by Markram.

IANS |

South Africa got off to a fine start in the second cricket Test against India, reaching 78/0 in their first innings till lunch on the first day at the SuperSport Park here on Saturday.

After South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis won the toss and elected to bat, opening batsmen Aiden Markram (51 batting) and Dean Elgar (26 batting) batted sensibly as they were in control mode against the Indian bowlers.

The 23-year-old right-hander Markram registered his second fifty with the help of nine fours. He was the aggressor of the two, while Elgar batted with steely resolve and backed his defensive techniques to the hilt.

On a bouncy wicket with less seam and swing as compared to the Newlands wicket in the first Test, Indian pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma and Harik Pandya operated with probing line and length.

Ishant replaced Bhuvneshwar Kumar for this match, while injured glovesman Wriddhiman Saha made way for Parthiv Patel. Another change was Lokesh Rahul replacing Shikhar Dhawan.

Mohammed Shami disappointed by bowling fully-pitched deliveries which were milked by Markram.

Markram also punished Pandya when he unleashed deliveries higher up the pitch late towards the lunch session.

In his second spell, Bumrah was off-colour, going for three fours in an over.

When South Africa were 61/0, India sought a review after the umpire turned down a caught behind appeal against Elgar off off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. But the umpire’s decision remained with the snickometer giving no sign of the ball kissing the bat.

Brief scores: South Africa: 78/0 (Aiden Markram 51 batting, Dean Elgar 26 batting) vs India till lunch on Day 1.

Inspecting authorities ensured honest execution of programmes: Naqvi

PTI | New Delhi |

Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Saturday praised the government-appointed inspecting authorities, saying they have ensured “100 per cent honest” execution of the minority affairs ministry’s programmes.

The authorities – which comprise mainly of retired IAS and IPS officials – were appointed a year ago to monitor the implementation of the ministry’s schemes.

The schemes include Gharib Nawaz Skill Development, Learn and Earn, Nai Manzil, Begum Hazrat Mahal Girls’ Scholarship, Nai Udaan, Padho Pardesh, Free Coaching, Ustaad, Prime Minister’s new 15-point programme and others.

“The more than 280 inspecting authorities have immensely contributed in proper implementation of the schemes of the ministry, National Minorities Development and Finance Corporation and Maulana Azad Education Foundation,” Naqvi was quoted as saying in an official statement.

The authorities have ensured “100 per cent honest” implementation of the programmes, he said during a workshop of the inspecting authorities held here.

Stating that his ministry has become completely digital, “leaving no scope for middlemen”, Naqvi said scholarship amounts were being credited directly into bank accounts of students.

“Be it welfare and developmental schemes or Haj affairs, our ministry has ensured complete transparency,” he said.

Naqvi said the ministry is spending about 65 per cent of its budget on educational empowerment and skill development of the minorities.

He also talked about the ministry’s decision to establish five “world class” institutions across India to impart modern education to minorities.

The ministry’s courses like ‘GST Facilitator’ and ‘Sanitary Supervisor’ are providing employment and employment opportunities to minority youths in a large number, he said.

He listed the ministry’s achievements over the past three years under the Multi-Sectoral Development Programme, organisation of Hunar Haat which is a platform for artisans from minority communities to showcase their talent – and other initiatives.

“Over the last three years, these schemes have succeeded in providing employment and employment opportunities to more than 50 lakh people from the communities,” he claimed.

Nadal wants to start afresh at 2018 Australian Open

Nadal talked down the significance of beginning the year with the No.1 ranking.

IANS | Melbourne |

Spanish tennis great Rafael Nadal has said the bitter disappointment of last year’s narrow five-set loss to Roger Federer in the Australian Open final will not give him any extra motivation for this year’s opening Grand Slam.

“It is impossible to be more motivated than last year or any year,” the world number one told Xinhua news agency on Saturday.

“For me the Australian Open, if you are not 100 percent motivated to win this tournament, you probably don’t love the sport.”

Despite a stellar 2017, which saw the 31-year-old claim the US Open and a record 10th French Open title, Nadal talked down the significance of beginning the year with the No.1 ranking.

“It is better to start No.1 than No.20,” the Spaniard said.

“But everyone starts from zero. I start from zero again. It’s a new season, an exciting one and I hope to be healthy, competitive and, most importantly, to enjoy tennis.”

“I just think about my first round… It’s the first match of the year and I don’t think further than that. I take it day by day as I always have.”

Nadal’s first hit out of the 2018 Australian Open will take place on Monday, when he faces Victor Estrella Burgos of the Dominican Republic, who currently ranks 81 in the world.

Boult’s fifer guides Kiwis to easy win vs Pakistan

New Zealand were bowled out for 257 in their 50 overs

IANS | Dunedin |

New Zealand rode on paceman Trent Boult’s fifer to thrash Pakistan by 183 runs in the third One-Day International and take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match rubber.

Batting first after winning the toss, New Zealand were bowled out for 257 in their 50 overs, a total that proved out to be a gigantic one in the end, as Pakistan collapsed to 74 all out — their fourth-lowest ODI total.

Skipper Kane Williamson top-scored for the hosts with 73 runs off 101 balls while Ross Taylor finished with a well-paced 52 off 64. Martin Guptill also played a handy knock of 45 off 62 while Tom Latham paced a run-a-ball 35.

Hasan Ali and Rumman Raees picked up three wickets each while Shadab Khan picked up two wickets as New Zealand lost seven wickets for 62 in the last 10 overs after being comfortably placed for 195/3 at the end of 40 overs.

But even that was too much for Pakistan, who could not recover from a top-order slide induced by Boult (5/17), dismissing Azhar Ali, Fakhar Zaman and Mohammad Hafeez in his first two overs, to reduce Pakistan to 2/3 in 4 overs.

That score became 16/6 in the 15th over, and before they could come to terms with the situation, Pakistan found themselves 32/8 in the 19th over.

A 20-run partnership between captain Sarfraz Ahmed and Mohammad Amir took the score past the lowest-ever ODI total of 35, which Pakistan risked changing, and then past 43, which is Pakistan’s lowest team total in ODI cricket.

After Amir’s wicket in the 24th over, Rumman Raees shared a 22-run stand with Sarfraz, but the game was already lost by then. Eventually, Pakistan were bowled out for 74 in 27.2 overs.

While Man-of-the-Match Boult turned out to be the pick of the bowlers, Colin Munro and Lockie Ferguson contributed with two wickets apiece.

Raees was the top run-scorer for Pakistan with 16 as only four batsmen could reach double-digit scores. Sarfraz finished unbeaten on 14.

Bhansali goes into shell as producers decide ‘Padmaavat’ release date

IANS |

It is astonishing what adversity can do to you. It has been eight long, painful and mortifying months for filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, master of epic sagas like “Devdas” and “Bajirao Mastani — which have formalised his place as the only true successor to epic filmmakers such as K. Asif, Mehboob Khan, V. Shantaram and Raj Kapoor, while making an insane amount of money for him.

For the past months, while Bhansali has been attacked physically and emotionally, he has possibly felt like none of the erstwhile movie moghuls did. In fact, he feels like he is being treated like a common criminal — hounded, threatened, bullied and heckled for a crime whose nature he isn’t aware of. Perhaps, he needs to read law books which say making films in this country can be damaging to a filmmaker’s health.

The “Padmavati” — now renamed “Padmaavat” — crisis appears to have broken Bhansali physically and emotionally. I know that for months he hasn’t been eating or sleeping properly. And he has started chain-smoking again. “It’s Lataji’s songs and cigarettes which have kept me going all these months,” he told me. I kept quiet. I’ve no words of consolation for him.

To say Bhansali has been to hell and back would be an understatement. Living under constant threat and fear is like coping with a fatal disease, one which erodes your very soul. The threats from the fringe groups — and I’ve been a witness to callers on his mobile phone who have shouted that they would do much worse than behead him — is something that no outsider would understand, let alone empathize with.

The lack of real camaraderie within the film fraternity makes it worse for someone as private as Bhansali. He became more vulnerable to attack when the bullies realized he had no support system to buffer him from them. The post-midnight calls became even more abusive.

Also, there were open offers to “stop all protests” in exchange for fiscal favors. When Bhansali shut down his mobile phone, calls began to come to his home number, sometimes attended to by his old, ailing mother.

For him, the most important thing at that moment is to protect his mother. He stopped watching news channels at home — and once the attacks gathered momentum, the security was beefed up. He also stayed back most of the time to protect his mother against the vilification visited upon her son. But then she would get a dose of the hate campaign against him by reading the morning Gujarati newspapers that she combed regularly.

The situation at Bhansali’s home appears to be very depressing. At some point, he decided to give up the fight and stopped thinking about the fate of “Padmaavat”. He left the marketing decisions to his producers Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, where the executives decided to release the film on January 25.

Bhansali has become a bystander in the drama of his own that’s being played out in full public view. No one is sure how this bizarre narrative based on hearsay, political antipathy, and debased views will pan out. Bhansali recently asked a friend: “Can the film release in the states that have threatened to ban it? Does the CBFC endorsement mean anything to those who want to stop my film at any cost?”

One question remains, though. Why do some people want “Padmaavat” stopped? A whim, an impulse or is it something deeper than you or I could understand?

I guess, like Jessica, we’ll never know who wanted to kill “Padmavati”.

Cabinet ministers should ‘speak up’ like SC judges: Yashwant

PTI | New Delhi |

Firing a fresh salvo at the government, disgruntled BJP leader Yashwant Sinha today asked his party colleagues and ministers to “get rid of their fear” and “speak up for democracy” like the four Supreme Court judges who came out publicly against the chief justice.

The former Union minister referred to the comments of the four judges to claim that the prevailing atmosphere was like the Emergency in 1975-77 and voiced concern over short parliamentary sessions.

If Parliament is compromised, the Supreme Court is not in order, then democracy is threatened, he told reporters.

Sinha said “if four senior-most Supreme Court judges say democracy is under threat, we have to take their words very seriously”

“Every citizen who feels for democracy should speak up. I will ask party (BJP) leaders and senior cabinet ministers to speak up. I will appeal to them to get rid of their fears and speak up,” he said.

Sinha, however, insisted that it was for the apex court to sort out the crisis after the four senior judges virtually revolted against the country’s chief justice yesterday, raising questions on “selective” case allocation and certain judicial orders.

Like the Chief Justice of India in the Supreme Court, the prime minister is also first among equals in the government and his cabinet colleagues should speak up, he said.

Sinha, who has been a vocal critic of the Modi government over issues like demonetization, GST, and Kashmir, claimed that he was “personally aware of the fear in which members of the cabinet in this government are working, and that also is a threat to democracy”.

The BJP has in the past attributed Sinha’s scathing criticism of the government to his being sidelined in the party with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley once dubbing him as a “job applicant at 80”.

Sinha was a cabinet minister in the first BJP-led NDA government and held finance and foreign affairs portfolios.

In his press conference, Sinha also rejected suggestions that politicians should not wade into the judicial crisis, saying when four senior-most SC judges have gone public, it was no longer an internal matter of the court and it was imperative for every concerned citizen to raise his voice.

Political parties and Parliament should speak when four senior-most judges had spoken about dangers to democracy, he said.

Referring to the Winter Session and the first leg of the Budget Session to be held between January 29-February 9, Sinha said he had never heard of such short sessions and this was also a threat to democracy.

Citing the four judges comments that sensitive cases were assigned by the Chief Justice of India to particular benches, he said it must be clarified which were these cases.

He added that it was anyway “clear like sunlight” that which cases were being talked about.

“It is obvious that attempts have been made to manage some sensitive cases,” he alleged, adding “corrective actions must be taken. People should be told which are these cases”.

Decks cleared to acquire land for new prison in Mumbai

PTI | Mumbai |

The Maharashtra government has told the Bombay High Court that it has finally completed formalities to acquire land for a new prison complex here, four years after it made the proposal.

As per an affidavit submitted in the high court by the Maharashtra government yesterday, the city collector will hand over around 52,000 sq mt plot at Mandale village near Mankhurd to the state by next month for the construction of the new prison.

The construction of the new prison was proposed by the Maharashtra government in 2014 to tackle overcrowding in the existing prisons in and around Mumbai.

As per the affidavit, the state home department, the revenue department, and other stakeholders met on January 3.

All formalities were completed during the meeting and the state revenue minister directed the city collector to hand over the 52,000 sq.m. plot within a month’s time.

Appearing for the state, advocate Anil Sakhre informed the court that the Public Works Department had also been directed to appoint an architect and prepare the plan and estimates for the new construction.

In the meantime, Sakhre said, the state had already begun constructing “eight new barracks at the Yerwada Central Jail premises in Pune since the prison has sufficient space” for the same.

“All new construction at the Yerwada premises and the proposed site in Mankhurd will be done in line with the suggestions of the state’s prison reforms committee,” Sakhre said.

The affidavit was filed in compliance with a previous order of the high court.

In February 2017, a bench led by Justice AS Oka had directed the Maharashtra government to set up a committee headed by a retired high court judge and experts as members to conduct a “scientific study on setting up a model prison with necessary infrastructure and steps to reduce overcrowding in jails.”

Following the court’s order at the time, the state had conducted an inspection, which revealed that the Arthur Road jail in Mumbai and the Yerwada jail were severely overcrowded.

It had also revealed that the prisons across the state did not have an adequate number of toilets and bathrooms and that the male inmates often had to bathe in the open. In the women’s cell too, there was an inadequate number of toilets and bathrooms.

The inspection report had also said that these toilets were ill-maintained and dirty.

In the affidavit submitted on Friday, the state said that the central prisons in Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Aurangabad, and Nagpur required around 200 additional toilets, bathrooms, and bathing platforms.

“We are carrying out repair work at the existing toilets and bathrooms. We will soon allocate funds for construction of new toilets and bathrooms too,” Sakhre said.

The court has now directed the state to submit by February 12 a chart detailing all repair and construction work that is proposed or currently being undertaken, the cost for the same, and the time that will be taken to complete all such work.

HDFC Ltd on Saturday said its board has approved raising up to Rs 13,000 crore primarily to maintain its holding in its banking arm and enter segments like stressed assets and health insurance.

This will be the first equity raising by the country’s largest pure-play mortgage lender in over a decade.

“The Committee of Directors of the Corporation at its meeting held today approved the issue of equity shares up to an aggregate amount not exceeding Rs 13,000 crore through a combination of a Preferential Allotment and Qualified Institutions Placement, subject to shareholders’ approval through postal ballot,” HDFC said in a statement.

The board approved issuance 6.43 crore shares of face value of Rs 2 each on a preferential basis at a price of Rs 1726.05 per share, aggregating to Rs 11,103.66 crore to various investors including Azim Premji Trust.

The board also approved the issuance of such number of shares of face value of Rs 2 each through Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) such that the total amount to be raised shall not exceed Rs 1,896 crore, subject to approval.

“The key objective of raising capital is to participate in the preferential issue of HDFC Bank up to an amount not exceeding Rs 8,500 crore. This would enable the Corporation to maintain its current shareholding in HDFC Bank,” it said.

HDFC is also exploring inorganic opportunities in the health insurance sector in conjunction with its subsidiary HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company and is evaluating opportunities in the acquisition and resolution of stressed assets in the real estate sector, it said.

“The Corporation will also need capital to sponsor funds it has set up to invest in the equity and mezzanine debt of affordable housing projects, support capital requirements of its subsidiary companies as and when required and capitalise on organic and inorganic growth opportunities in the affordable housing finance space,” it added.

UN hails India, China’s climate change fight when ‘others are failing’

PTI | United Nations |

The United Nations has hailed India and China for their leadership role and strong commitment in fighting climate change at a time when “others are failing”.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the UN has a “very solid commitment” for climate action, pointing out that African nations were the biggest victims of the globally changing weather patterns.

“We cannot be defeated by climate change and we are not yet winning this battle,” he said yesterday at a ceremony in which Egypt took over the chairmanship of the ‘Group of 77 (or G77) and China’ from Ecuador.

“And it is clear to me that the biggest victims of climate change are members of the G77, namely African countries affected by drought or small island countries affected by the kind of hurricanes that we have seen or the rising levels of waters.

“But at the same time, of the largest economies of the world the two largest economies of the G77 are strongly committed to the leadership in climate action – and I refer to China and India,” Guterres was quoted as saying by a UN statement.

“In a moment when others are failing, I see the largest economies of the Group of 77 and China to be assuming the leadership in climate action to make sure that we don’t suffer the dramatic and devastating impacts of climate change, as unfortunately we are already witnessing and things will get much worse if we are not able to defeat this threat,” Guterres said.

The G77 is the largest intergovernmental organisation of developing countries in the UN. Established on June 15, 1964, the group today has 134 members including India, the world’s third largest emitter of greenhouse gases.

India had in 2016 joined the Paris agreement on tackling climate change.

UN chief Guterres had on May 31 last year warned world leaders that the impact of climate change could affect food production, water security and weather patterns “from Canada to India”.

Stating that the “world is in a mess” he had urged the international community to “stay the course” even if one government does not believe in the emissions-cutting deal.

Two days later, US President Donald Trump had announced America’s withdrawal from the Paris Agreement.

Arguing that countries like China and India were benefiting the most from the Paris Agreement, Trump had said that the agreement on climate change was unfair to the US, as it badly hit its businesses and jobs.

The Paris Climate Agreement is a pact within the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change dealing with greenhouse gas emissions mitigation, adaptation and finance starting in the year 2020. According to the agreement, each country determines, plans and regularly reports its own contribution it should make in order to mitigate global warming.
