SNS | New Delhi |

Pawan Kalyan’s 25th film Agnyaathavaasi which released on January 12, received mixed responses from audiences. The makers of Agnyaathavaasi have now announced that a special cameo will be done by Tollywood actor Venkatesh who has done hit films like Prema, Brahma Putrudu and Bobbili Raja.

They will also be cutting many unnecessary shots in the film and will be releasing the renewed version in theatres from Sankranthi, said media reports.

Angyaathavaasi was one of the most awaited films in the Telugu cinema and took the box office by storm on its opening day. According to a Forbes report, the film gained over a record breaking $1.52 Million in its US Box Office but sank by a decline of 97% in just two days of its release, making just $44,600 on Thursday. According to reports, the film earned a total of Rs 60.5 Crore worldwide on its first day.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted the numbers gained by Angyaathavaasi on his official twitter account:

The film directed by Trivikram Srinivas is his third collaboration with Pawan Kalyan. Previously this actor-director duo was seen doing two other blockbuster films like Jalsa and Attarintiki Daredi.

Apart from starring Pawan Kalyan, the film also stars Aadhi, Keerthy Suresh and Anu Emmanuel. Angyaathavaasi also marks the Telugu debut for music director Anirudh Ravichander.

Only those Muslims will stay in India who assimilate into Hindu culture: BJP MLA

PTI | Ballia (UP) |

In a controversial remark, a BJP MLA from this district has said that once India becomes a “Hindu rashtra”, only those Muslims will stay in the country who assimilate into the Hindu culture.

“There are a very few Muslims who are patriotic. Once India becomes a Hindu rashtra (Hindu nation), Muslims who assimilate into our culture will stay in India. Those who will not are free to take asylum in any other country,” Bairia MLA Surendra Singh told reporters here last night.

He also claimed that by 2024, India would become a Hindu nation.

Describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an “avatar purush” (reincarnation of a deity), Singh said, “As the RSS completes 100 years in 2025, by 2024, India will become a Hindu rashtra. By the grace of god, India is going to be a global superpower thanks to the leadership of Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Not only will India become a ‘vishwa guru’, it will also become a Hindu rashtra by 2024.”

Taking a jibe at Congress president Rahul Gandhi, the BJP MLA said, “There are two sets of values in Rahul Gandhi — one is Italian, while the other one is Indian…He can never become the torchbearer of the Indian thought.”

He said the Gandhi scion could coin any slogan to become the prime minister of the country, but he lacked the strength and values to make India strong.

“His (Rahul Gandhi’s) is a mix of Indian and Italian culture,” Singh said and claimed that the Congress chief was not aware of what India and Indianness were all about.

Nadal, Djokovic, favourites at Australian Open: Federer

The humble Swiss star talked down any suggestion that he should be considered the favourite for this year’s Australian Open.

IANS | Melbourne |

After last year’s inspirational five-set victory against Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open final, tennis great Roger Federer looked cool, calm and confident when he addressed the media on Sunday, just one day before the 2018 tournament gets underway.

But the humble Swiss star talked down any suggestion that he should be considered the favourite for this year’s Australian Open, reports Xinhua news agency.

“I feel like maybe somebody like a Rafa, with the year that he’s had, or Novak (Djokovic) with the six titles could very well be the favorites too,” Federer said.

Even at 36 years of age, Federer is still at the peak of his powers, taking out two Grand Slams in 2017.

The World No.2 believes that his extensive pre-season training should be enough to see him through the gruelling tournament schedule.

“The off-season is tougher than playing tournaments for me,” Federer explained.

“I work hard in the off-season to create a base that serves me well throughout the season, and then I rework the base time and time again throughout the season,” he added.

“I think that’s very important.”

With five-time Australian Open finalist Andy Murray’s withdrawal, and Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic under injury clouds, Federer acknowledged that there is a price to pay when playing “highly explosive tennis.”

“I think attacking tennis also has a lot of wear and tear on the body,” he said.

“Playing more of a reactive game is maybe more physical in the sense that you play longer rallies, you spend more time on the court, but it’s always pretty much the same,” he added.

“It’s a similar rhythm, but there’s not that much sprints going on in this regard.”

When asked if tennis tournament organisers should do more to address the recent spate of player injuries, Federer disagreed.

“Whose responsibility is it at the end of the day? I think it’s the players.

“I’ve played thousands of matches in my life, and I’m sure I’ve gotten lucky throughout my career, but sometimes you have to take a minute and talk to the team about it, like how we’re going to approach these next three months, next year, next day,” he said.

“Everything needs to be perfectly planned, I think, to avoid as many injuries as possible.”

His first round match of the 2018 Australian Open will take place Tuesday, against Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia.

Students more engaged, attentive during outdoor lessons: study

PTI | New York |

Conducting lessons outdoors amidst natural greenery can help students become more attentive and engaged during classes, a study has found.

Scientists have known for a while that natural outdoor environments can have a variety of beneficial effects on people.

People exposed to parks, trees or wildlife can experience benefits such as physical activity, stress reduction, rejuvenated attention and increased motivation.

In children, studies have shown that even a view of greenery through a classroom window could have positive effects on students’ attention.

Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign in the US hypothesized that an outdoor lesson in nature would result in increased classroom engagement in indoor lessons held immediately afterward.

“We wanted to see if we could put the nature effect to work in a school setting,” said Ming Kuo, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

For the study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology, the researchers tested their hypothesis in third graders (9-10 years old) in a school.

Bhangra not just about balle balle, hoye hoye: Bally Sagoo

IANS | New Delhi |

In the 1990s, he won hearts with his re-worked version of Chura liya– and hits like Gur nalon ishq mitha, Dil cheez and Tum bin — at a time when social media was nowhere in sight. British-Indian record producer Baljit Singh Sagoo, known better as Bally Sagoo, says there is a misconception that Punjab’s bhangra music genre is just about balle balle and hoye hoye.

Sagoo believes Bollywood has progressed a lot with new sounds, but not bhangra music.

“Bhangra is not just about the balle balle and hoye hoye. The kids out there don’t want to listen to Punjabi music. And when I say Punjabi music, it’s the language fused with different sounds, just like English, Latino and other global sounds.

“My music differs and I have been serving different tastes in most of my albums — varying from mellow, dance, R&B and romantic, so there’s a variety in there with bhangra songs,” Sagoo, who has three decades of experience in the music industry.

He said that in Punjab, people are still using the beats which he was using in the early 1990s.

“They use the same types of percussion… whereas, in my opinion, they should be fusing the language with different sounds — with a bit of bhangra as we all love it. Also, one major thing is that female singers are missing. It has always been a male-dominated industry. It should be a collaborative effort,” said Sagoo, who performed in Gurugram on Friday for Lohri celebrations at DLF Cyber Hub.

With most Punjabi songs hailing figures of women, flashy cars and watches, Sagoo, who has scored music for films like “Bend It Like Beckham” and “Monsoon Wedding”, says people should look beyond “trying to get a big fat car or a big fat chain or something like that in a video”.

“I think today’s songs pretty much contain some sort of violence, drugs, women and bling, and I personally don’t really like that kind of stuff, I don’t like that kind of videos… I think they give pretty much a wrong impression… to the youngsters, to the kids out there,” said the 53-year-old artiste.

“India now has access to what happens around the world. Of course, a lot of people are seeing what is happening all over the world… (but) some things don’t work in our society and in our culture,” he added.

Sagoo said he prefers making videos that people can enjoy even with family members.

“I don’t like the guns, the gangsters or any sort of violence. People should be making more and more true music and experimenting more… With bhangra music, it is the same topic: Boy meets girl; boy tries to impress the girl… I guess more and more new styles of music should be introduced into bhangra music,” said Sagoo, who has been flying to and fro between India and the UK.

On the trend he foresees in the music industry, Sagoo pointed out how India has a lot of DJs, but few record producers.

“To compete with the world, we really need a lot more composers and new, serious vocalists. We have a lot of DJs but not producers. The trend is towards the R&B and the hip-hop side,” said the artiste, whose last album was “Cafe Punjab” released in 2015.

Stressing that “Bollywood will always be the king”, Sagoo said there are people outside India who want to hear different sounds and vibes. Which is why he wants more and more people to constantly push the boundaries.

Sagoo is currently handling several new projects and will soon be “dropping a brand new album”.

EC panel to review law barring campaigning 48 hrs before poll

PTI | New Delhi |

The Election Commission has set up a panel to suggest amendments to a provision in the election law barring campaigning 48 hours ahead of polling, following complaints that it has failed to keep pace with information technology.

The panel will be headed by senior Deputy Election Commissioner Umesh Sinha. It will have eight other members from the EC.

The committee will have one member each from the law ministry, IT ministry and the information and broadcasting ministry. Two others will be from the Press Council of India and the National Broadcasters Association.

The panel will submit its report to the poll watchdog in the next three months.

The committee will “examine these provisions in the prevailing context of communication technologies and suggest required changes”, it said.

The move to set up the committee came in the wake of controversies over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s FICCI meeting, Rahul Gandhi’s TV interviews and the release of BJP manifesto — all after campaigning had ended in Gujarat.

The poll panel accepted that Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act does not take into account the revolution in communication technologies.

“It appears imperative to revisit the provisions relating to the last 48 hours before completion of poll to appropriately address challenges unleashed by fast changing technologies in the context of multi-phase polls,” the EC had said.

SC crisis: 4 retired judges write open letter to CJI

PTI | New Delhi |

Four retired judges, including an ex-Supreme Court judge, today wrote an open letter to the chief justice of India, saying they agree with the issues raised by the four apex court judges over allocation of cases and the crisis needs to be resolved “within the judiciary”.

The letter by former apex court judge P B Sawant, ex- chief justice of Delhi High Court A P Shah, former Madras High Court judge K Chandru and ex-Bombay High Court judge H Suresh was given to the media. It also went viral on social media.

Justice Shah confirmed having written an open letter along with the other retired judges and told PTI, “We have written the open letter which the other judges named in the letter have also consented to.”

He said that the view expressed by the retired judges is “quite similar to the views of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) that till this crisis is resolved, the important matters should be listed before a five-judge Constitution bench of senior judges”.

Justice Shah said that earlier he was not sure about the consent given by the other three judges and, therefore, he initially denied having written any letter but now all of them have given consent to it.

The letter quoted the judges as having said, “The four senior puisne Judges of the Supreme Court have brought to light a serious issue regarding the manner of allocation of cases, particularly sensitive cases, to various benches of the Supreme Court.

“They have expressed a grave concern that cases are not being allocated in a proper manner and are being allocated arbitrarily to particular designated benches, often headed by junior judges, in an arbitrary manner. This is having a very deleterious effect on the administration of justice and the rule of law.”

The four retired judges said that they agree with the four judges of top court that though the CJI is the master of roster and can designate benches for allocation of work but this does not mean that it can be done in an “arbitrary manner” such that, “sensitive and important cases” are sent to “hand-picked benches” of junior judges by the chief justice.

“This issue needs to be resolved and clear rules and norms must be laid down for allocation of benches and distribution of cases, which are rational, fair and transparent,” they said, adding that this must be done “immediately to restore public confidence” in the judiciary and in the Supreme Court.

The letter further said that “however till that is done, it is important that all sensitive and important cases including pending ones, be dealt with by a Constitution bench of the five seniormost judges of this Court”.

It added, “Only such measures would assure the people that the Supreme Court is functioning in a fair and transparent manner and that the power of the Chief Justice as master of roster is not being misused to achieve a particular result in important and sensitive cases. We, therefore, urge you to take immediate steps in this regard.”

PM Modi will host a private dinner for Netanyahu on Sunday. PM Netanyahu will call on External Affairs Minister (EAM) Sushma Swaraj, later on the same day.

On Monday, he will be given a ceremonial reception at the Rashtrapati Bhawan following which he would lay a wreath at Rajghat.

He would then participate in a dialogue at Hyderabad House which will also include a one-on-one discussion with Modi.

PM Modi will hold talks with his Israeli counterpart on Monday covering entire expanse of the ties and explore new areas of cooperation to further deepen the “very very special relationship”. After the signing of agreements, they will issue a joint press statement.

Israeli PM Netanyahu will call on President Ram Nath Kovind and Vice President Venkaiah Naidu later on Monday.

Govt disbands security development council over fund misuse

PTI | New Delhi |

The government has disbanded the Security Sector Skill Development Council, set up to provide professional certification for the private security industry, after an audit found several malpractices, including misuse of funds and serious conflict of interest.

The powers of assessing trainees and awarding certificates have been taken away from the Security Sector Skill Development Council (SSSDC) and it has been subsumed into the management sector skill council.

The development comes in the backdrop of rising concerns over job creation and the government’s increased focus on skilling to create a workforce ready to be absorbed by the industry.

Sources said there are complaints from various quarters regarding the functioning of the sector skill councils that are set up as autonomous industry-led bodies by National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC).

The sector skill councils are being closely watched, and recommendations for the non-performing ones have been submitted to the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, as there is a need to “weed out” the bad ones, NSDC MD & CEO Manish Kumar told PTI.

A directive has also been issued for freezing the bank account of the Security Sector Skill Development Council to protect the public money lying with it.

“Inquiry is done, now we will file an FIR. It is something which is serious and we are not going to leave it, we are going to pursue this,” Kumar said.

The FIR, he said, will be filed against the executive authority who was signing the cheque. “Apparently, the signing power was with the Chairman (Kunwar Vikram Singh), whoever was signing the cheques we will hold accountable,” Kumar said.

The council has 22 persons on its Board.

Kumar said an audit which was shared with the NSDC Board raised a “lot of money misuse” and the report was shared with the government.

“A government request had come that they (security SSC) should not be entrusted with the responsibility of a sector skill council. A formal communication had come from the government, so it is a combined decision of the government and NSDC,” he said.

In NSDC too, 6-7 employees have resigned in the recent past, perhaps owing to feedback on their poor performance, whereas a couple of others may have resigned as their “integrity was under the cloud” and an inquiry would have followed, Kumar said, adding that poor-performers may be asked to leave in future.

However, he said that mass sacking is out of the question.

According to sources, the government is not satisfied with the performance of the flagship skilling scheme Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) being implemented by NSDC.

“PMKVY’s performance and IT (Smart Portal) performance has not been up to the level that we wanted. Therefore, that does mean that we need to do more out there. We want to improve that,” Kumar said.

The NSDC had earlier wrested control of its Skill Management and Accreditation of Training Centres (SMART) portal from Quality Council of India, following several complaints regarding inspection of its training centres being run under PMKVY.

The Security Sector Skill Development Council was constituted as per the National Skill Policy of the government. It was jointly formed by the Central Association of Private Security Industry and NSDC.

The NSDC was set up as a one of its kind public-private partnership company.

Israel PM begins historic India visit, PM Modi welcomes him with a bear hug

Ashok Tuteja | New Delhi |

India on Sunday accorded a red carpet welcome to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who arrived here on a six-day landmark visit that is expected to further tighten the embrace between the two countries in fields ranging from defence and counter-terrorism to trade, agriculture, water and health.

Setting aside the protocol, Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally received his ‘friend’ with a bear hug as the Israeli PM and his wife Sara disembarked from the special aircraft, reinforcing the personal chemistry between the two leaders.

The visit comes six months after Modi’s own visit to Israel and days after India voted at the UN against the US move to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Though disappointed over New Delhi’s vote, Israel has chosen not to make it a big issue, given the burgeoning partnership between the two nations in key areas.

Netanyahu is the second Israeli PM to visit India in the last 25 years after the two countries established diplomatic relations. The first was by Ariel Sharon who visited India in 2003, with the then PM Atal Behari Vajpayee being his host.

Netanyahu’s visit, which is likely to be high on symbolism, will be keenly watched in Pakistan and the Arab world, concerned as they are over the increasing strategic alliance between India and Israel ever since the NDA government assumed office in New Delhi in May 2014.

Shortly after the Israeli entourage landed, the two Prime Ministers drove straight from the airport to the Teen Murti Memorial in the heart of the capital to participate in a solemn ceremony to pay homage to Indian soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice to liberate Haifa in Israel in 1918. The two leaders laid wreaths at the memorial and signed the visitors’ book. The ceremony also marked the formal renaming of Teen Murti Chowk as the Teen Murti Haifa Chowk.

The Israeli PM would be formally welcomed on Monday morning at the Rashtrapati Bhavan before the two PMs hold delegation-level talks. It will be followed by inking of several MoUs between their two nations in different areas. Sources said the MoUs would be in the field of oil and gas, renewable energy, cyber security, co-production of films and documentaries, aviation and health. The two countries are also expected to issue a joint statement, declaring, among other things, their resolve to combat terrorism and enhance security cooperation.

The two countries are also expected to sign mega business deals during the visit since Netanyahu is travelling with a high-powered delegation, comprising nearly 130 businessmen from more than 100 Israeli companies. A meeting with President Ram Nath Kovind is also scheduled for tomorrow.

Netanyahu and his delegation would be travelling to Agra to see the historic Taj Mahal on Tuesday and return to Delhi later to participate in the ‘Raisina Dialogue’.

Modi would be accompanying the visiting leader on Wednesday to his home state of Gujarat where the two leaders would participate in a road show in Ahmedabad, similar to the one organised for Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in September last year.

Netanyahu would arrive in Mumbai on Wednesday evening to meet members of the Indian Jewish community. His scheduled in India’s commercial capital would also include a breakfast meeting with top Indian business honchos. He will also attended memorial services for the victims of the Mumbai terror attacks at the iconic Taj Hotel and the Nariman House. He will also meet top Bollywood directors and actors for exploring the possibilities of cooperation between the two countries in co-production of films.

Rails supplied to railways are defect free, says SAIL

PTI | New Delhi |

The country’s largest steelmaker SAIL has said the rails supplied to railways are totally “defect free” and processing of tracks at the PSU follows highest level of quality control.

The statement comes in the wake of railways inviting a global tender to plug the shortfall in supply of rails from Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL).

“Production of rails is a complex multi stage process.

The processing of rail tracks at SAIL follows highest level of quality control by virtue of which almost 15 per cent of work in progress is kept aside during various stages of production,” a company official said.

State-owned SAIL has been its sole supplier so far. The public sector undertaking (PSU) has been supplying tracks to Indian railways for more than five decades.

“The 100 per cent of rails supplied by SAIL to Indian railways are inspected by a third party and are completely defect free,” the official added.

Railways recently said that it had to invite a global tender for procuring more than 4 lakh metric tonne of rails to meet the shortfall of supply from SAIL.

Minister of state for railways Rajen Gohain had informed the Rajya Sabha that the requirement of rails for Indian Railways for year 2017-2018 was 14.59 lakh metric tonnes.

“SAIL as per their latest projection has given commitment to supply 9.5 lakh metric tonne rails during 2017-2018. To meet the shortfall of supply from SAIL, Railway has invited a global tender…,” Gohain had said.

The pre-bid conference for this tender was held on 21 November. The technical bids of tender for procurement of 4,87,000 metric tonnes of 60 kg-UIC rails was opened on 22 December 2017.

This was the first time that the national transporter floated a global tender for procuring rails.

Recently, SAIL commissioned its 1.2 MTPA new Universal Rail Mill (URM). And with this, the PSU has begun the commercial production of world’s longest single rail of 130 meters from the new URM.

“This URM will take BSP’s (Bhilai Steel Plant) total capacity to produce rails at 2.0 MTPA, which will be the largest rail production capacity in any single location for a plant world over,” the PSU official said.

“Alongside the URM, a long rail welding complex had also been set with proven technology for world class rail welding.

The welding complex is equipped with fully automated flash butt welding machine to weld rail panels of 260-metre length and fully automated long rail handling facility,” the official added.

This URM complex will equip SAIL to meet railways’ specific demand of 260-metre rails as the new mill is capable of producing 260 metre long rail with a single weld and also has the provision to supply welded panels up to 520 metre length in future, the official said.
