26 killed and 75 injured in Baghdad twin suicide bombings

IANS | Baghdad |

At least 26 persons were killed and 75 others injured in twin suicide attacks in Baghdad early on Monday, police said.

The first attack took place in the morning when a suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest at a crowded site near al-Tayaran Square where construction workers usually gather waiting for potential employers.

“The blasts were carried out by two suicide bombers,” a spokesperson for the Iraqi Interior Minister said on his Twitter account. The second bomb exploded on a roadside.

The death toll was expected to climb further as many of the wounded were in critical condition, Efe reported.

Security forces cordoned off the area and ambulances evacuated victims to nearby hospitals.

No group claimed responsibility for the attacks but the Islamic State militant group, in most cases, is blamed for deadly attacks targeting crowded areas in Iraq, including markets, cafes and mosques.

Last week, a suicide bombing in Baghdad killed eight persons and wounded 10 others when the blast struck a northern Baghdad neighbourhood targeting a police checkpoint on a busy street.

‘Padmaavat’ makers state disclaimers loud and clear via ad

IANS | Mumbai |

The makers of Padmaavat, through front-page advertisements in newspapers on Monday, listed disclaimers clarifying that it never had dream sequence featuring Alauddin Khilji and Rani Padmavati and that it is a movie every Indian will be proud of.

The ad comes a day after the controversial movie’s producers — Bhansali Productions and Viacom18 Motion Pictures — officially announced that the film will hit the screens on January 25 with due modifications suggested by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

“Padmaavat is a film that every India will be proud of. Please visit your nearest theatre on January 25 to experience it yourself,” the makers have stated at the end of the ad, which has the movie’s poster, featuring lead actress Deepika Padukone, on the flipside.

The following are the points clarified by the makers of the Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial, which also features Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh in pivotal roles:

* The film Padmaavat is based on the epic ‘Padmavat’ by Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi which is a revered work of fiction.

* The film does not have and never had a dream sequence between Alauddin Khilji and Rani Padmavati.

* We have made this film as an ode to the famed valor, legacy, and courage of Rajputs.

* The film portrays Rani Padmavati with the utmost respect and does not tarnish her repute or misrepresent her character in any manner.

* The film has been cleared with only five modifications by the CBFC and is officially approved for release in India with a U/A certificate.

* There are no further cuts or modifications to the film.

* We are grateful to the government authorities, CBFC, film fraternity and our fans for their support.

Bank of India postpones Rs 3,000 cr QIP plan

PTI | New Delhi |

State-owned Bank of India (BoI) has deferred the Rs 3,000-crore capital raising plan through private placement of equity shares after the government’s move to infuse Rs 2,257 crore capital into it, a top official said.

“We have postponed the QIP (Qualified Institutional Placement) as the government decided to infuse Rs 2,257 crore capital support into the bank obviating the need for the capital immediately,” BoI Managing Director Dinabandhu Mohapatra told PTI.

So, there is now no need for QIP this fiscal as more capital would also flow-in through recap bonds, he said.

“The decision to drop the QIP plan has not been taken because of the Prompt Corrective Action (PCA). It was taken before the PCA (by RBI).

“Since some positive developments were taking place on resolution of stressed assets under NCLT (National Company Law Tribunal) and the government had indicated more capital infusion, we decided to wait for the actual infusion on the book and then go to the market for QIP. This way we will get more value for our shares, he said.

It is to be noted that the bank has been placed under the Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) framework by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) following inspection of books in March 2017.

The central bank downgraded some of BoI’s accounts impacting profitability as well as non-performing asset (NPA) position. As a result the Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) came under pressure necessitating need for capital infusion for the government.

However, the bank expects to be out of the RBI s watchlist soon as it has put in place an aggressive bad loan recovery strategy.

BoI had last tapped the market in November last year to raise Rs 500 crore capital through AT-1 bonds.

Talking about other sources of raising capital, Mohapatra said, the bank is also looking at selling some of the non-core assets.

The bank has already floated a Request for Proposal (RFP) for selling its entire 29 per cent stake in STCI (formerly known as Securities Trading Corporation of India) Limited as part of sale of its non-core assets, he said, adding the transaction should happen this fiscal itself.

IndiGo passenger lands in Nagpur instead of Indore due to airline’s goof-up

Indore and Nagpur are separated by a distance of 450 kilometers.

SNS | New Delhi |

A passenger who had a ticket to Indore from New Delhi landed in Nagpur due to a major goof-up by IndiGo airlines. The incident happened on 12 January.

The unnamed passenger had the boarding pass for the flight to Indore but that went unchecked at the security gate from where he boarded the flight to Nagpur.

The airline company suspended three personnel over the incident and initiated a probe.

“The security lead, second lead and skipper (security personnel) have been taken off roster till IndiGo’s internal enquiry in the matter is completed,” IndiGo said in a statement.

Instead of boarding the 6E 656 (DEL-IDR) the passenger boarded the 6E 774 (DEL-NAG) and landed in the city in Maharashtra instead of the one in Madhya Pradesh.

Indore and Nagpur are separated by a distance of 450 kilometers.

In its statement, IndiGo expressed regret over the incident.

“IndiGo regrets the security breach intercepted by its security staff on flight 6E 774 (DEL-NAG), wherein a passenger of flight 6E 656 (DEL-IDR) wrongly boarded the flight 6E 774 and further travelled to Nagpur, after boarding the wrong coach,” the airline said.

The company said that the passenger’s baggage has been retrieved from the Indore flight.

Rebel with a cause Nick Kyrgios to help troubled youth

AFP | Melbourne |

Nick Kyrgios has become a rebel with a cause by creating his own foundation to help underprivileged youth, admitting it was time to “knuckle down” and grow up.

The volatile Australian, who begins his Australian Open campaign Monday, wants to help the welfare of disadvantaged youngsters by creating the NK Foundation.

It is all part of the young gun finding more maturity after frequent criticism in the past for his on-court blow- ups.

“I’m pretty young still, but there is a time when you’ve got to knuckle down and become a true professional,” he told the Melbourne Herald Sun Monday.

“And I’m getting closer and closer to that at the moment.”

Kyrgios, 22, who won his fourth ATP Tour title in Brisbane ahead of the Australian Open, has revealed his desire to provide facilities for struggling children has become a key motivator in his career.

“It’s massive for me to have a foundation like that,” he said ahead of his first-round match at Melbourne Park with Brazil’s Rogerio Dutra Silva.

“I’ve been wanting to do something like this since I was about 19.

“To have my own place where kids or people could just come or sort of live or pick a sport they wanted to play.

“Doing well at tournaments obviously is massive. The cash is a big thing to go into the foundation.

“Obviously they’re (kids) going to be watching and watching me play and that’s going to be motivation for them, I think, whichever sport they chose.

“To see the person whose foundation is doing well, the culture would be awesome.”

Kyrgios, with his brother Christos, is developing a facility in Melbourne where youth can play tennis, basketball, swim and take shelter.

It is a different side to the tempestuous Kyrgios, who is seen as the big hope to become the first Australian to win the national Open since Mark Edmondson back in 1976.

Kyrgios sees his foundation as helping him cope with competitive pressures on court.

“I’m not just playing for myself. I’m playing for the whole foundation and everyone who’s kinda helped me that and who’s supported me,” he said.

“I’m playing for all of them and I’m sure that’s going to help me on court.

“So many players and past players have been supportive.

Tennis Australia, the ATP have helped. It’s awesome.”

Indian Army chief’s comments will hurt peace: China

IANS | Beijing |

China on Monday expressed anger over Indian Army chief Bipin Rawat’s remarks, saying such “unconstructive” comments would hurt peace and tranquillity in the border area.

Gen Rawat last week said India needed to shift its military focus from its western border with Pakistan to its northern border with China. He also said that if China was strong, India was not weak either.

“During the past one year, relations between China and India witnessed some twists and turns,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said.

Lu pointed out that in September, the leaders of India and China reached some important consensus on properly handling the differences and promote China-India relations.

“Recently, two sides enhanced dialogue on consultation and bilateral relations have shown sound momentum of improvement and development.

“Under such background, the unconstructive remarks by the Indian senior officials not only go against the consensus reached by the two heads of state but not conform to the efforts made by the two sides to improve and develop bilateral relations.

“It cannot help to preserve tranquillity and peace at the border areas.”

‘The Walking Dead’ series gets renewed for season nine

PTI | Los Angeles |

The Walking Dead has been renewed for its ninth installment.

The hit zombie series, which comes back returns with the second half of the spell on February 25, will kick off season nine later this year, Entertainment Weekly reported.

Co-executive producer Angela Kang is being promoted to showrunner for the said season.

Scott M Gimple has been signed on as Chief Content Officer following an overall deal.

AMC president Charlie Collier called the development “enormously important day for the entire The Walking Dead television universe”.

“We are proud to acknowledge Angela’s significant contribution to the series and to set a clear path forward for a ninth season under her direction. Further, with gratitude and admiration, we also recognize Scott’s broad impact on, and leadership of, the content that fuels our TWD universe,” Collier said in a statement.

India firm favourites against Papua New Guinea in U-19 WC

PTI | Mount Maunganui (New Zealand) |

The odds will be stacked heavily in favour of India when the title contenders, with an eye on securing a knockout berth, meet minnows Papua New Guinea in the ICC U-19 World Cup here on Tuesday.

Three-time winners India began the tournament on a rousing note, inflicting a 100-run defeat on a well-knit Australian team yesterday.

With Zimbabwe being the other team in the group, India, with the kind of form they displayed in the sound thrashing of Australia, are expected to progress to knockouts without breaking a sweat.

From the moment India captain Prithvi Shaw won the toss and chose to bat, their opening game went almost exactly to plan, and the script is likely to remain the same at Bay Oval tomorrow.

The likes of Shaw, his opening partner Manjot Kalra, and Shubham Gill with the bat along with the pace duo of Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti could prove to be more than a handful for the Oceanian country.

Eager to prove themselves after their disastrous showing in the Asia Cup, India signalled their intentions first up with a thumping win over a very strong Australian side.

Papua New Guinea have qualified for their eighth World Cup after remaining undefeated in the East Asia Pacific Qualifier in Samoa.

PNG’s last appearance in the World Cup came in 2014 in the United Arab Emirates.

They would be keen to make an impression and show their fighting abilities.

India may be superior in all departments, but they are well aware of PNG’s willingness to make the most of this appearance, and the Rahul Dravid-coached side would look to guard against complacency.

India have been one of the most successful teams through the history of U-19 World Cups, with three titles and two runner-up finishes.

The side finished runners-up in the previous edition in 2016, losing to the West Indies in the title clash, and while a final berth looks realistic enough, a stumble at the last hurdle is what they are looking to avoid this time around.

In another match in Whangrei, Pakistan will square off against Ireland in a Group D clash.

Teams (from):

India: Prithvi Shaw (C), Shubman Gill, Aryan Juyal, Abhishek Sharma, Arshdeep Singh, Harvik Desai, Manjot Kalra, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Pankaj Yadav, Riyan Parag, Ishan Porel, Himanshu Rana, Anukul Roy, Shivam Mavi, Shiva Singh.

Papua New Guinea: Sema Kamea (C), Eisa Eka, James Tau, Tau Toa Nou, Nou Rarua, Igo Mahuru, Simon Atai, Leke Morea, Vagi Karaho, Kevau Tau, Heagi Toua, Daure Aiga, Ovia Sam, Sinaka Arua, Boge Arua.

Book-lovers throng World Book Fair on last day; dull affair, claim publishers

IANS | New Delhi |

Bibliophiles of the national capital thronged the 26th New Delhi World Book Fair on its last day on Sunday to grab their favorites at the best deal, even as publishers termed this year’s edition rather “dull” in terms of returns.

The annual book fair, which is organized by National Book Trust (NBT) in association with ITPO at the Pragati Maidan, saw a lesser number of stalls owing to ongoing construction work at the venue, but still, NBT managed to pull around 1,500.

The fair witnessed participation of more than 800 publishers, including international and regional ones. The last day at the book fair saw publishers offering heavy discounts to clear their stock. Young readers, as well as children, turned up in huge numbers at the fair to get books at a less price.

“We don’t want to carry back the books we got to the fair. So it is better to sell out as many books possible. And discounts, of course, attract visitors,” Sanjay Mittal of Rishabh Books, who was seen offering three books for Rs 100, told IANS.

Even for visitors, the main attraction of attending the book fair on last day is to buy books at a good discount. Ritika Lal, a class 10 student who came from Janakpuri said that she was visiting the fair on Sunday because of this reason.

“I came on Wednesday but the books were costly. I had already marked which books I wanted to buy when I came last time and today got them at less price. I got ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’, Enid Blyton and Sidney Sheldon for myself and a recipe book for my mother,” she added.

However, most of the publishers claimed that this edition of the book fair didn’t turn out in favor of them and rather was a dull affair.

“Unlike last year, there was no issue of demonetization this time. Yet there was hardly any crowd. Last Sunday and today we saw some crowd but throughout the week it was mostly vacant,” said Richu Kohli of Kohli Book Stall.

“Ever since the book fair has turned into an annual event, it is losing its charm and readers don’t feel coming every year. Earlier people from nearby cities like Jaipur, Chandigarh, Lucknow, and Shimla used to come a lot but now countable people turn up from the neighboring states. Schools don’t participate anymore like earlier times,” said Rishabh Vajpayee of Amar Prakashan from Kanpur.

Even for the readers, lack of fresh collection of books at the fair is a major setback. Garima Nigam who came along with her two children stated that she found the same books this time which were available last year as well.

“There is still some variety in the children’s book but no new books in fiction or non-fiction. There is too much of rush at the big publishing houses and those offering books for Rs 100 doesn’t have fresh books. Not a satisfactory event this time” said before leaving the event.

In a chilling reminder of infamous Nirbhaya case of 2012, the Haryana Police recovered the mutilated body of a minor girl from Jind district on Friday. Sources in the police said, the girl’s private parts were mutilated. Her body was found in a canal at Budhakhera village near Safidon town.

Congress-BJP trying to destroy BSP, Dalit movement: Mayawati

IANS | Lucknow |

BSP chief Mayawati on Monday accused the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of “deliberately and systematically” keeping the Dalits out of the national mainstream.

The four-time Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister also told the media here that the two parties had joined hands to destroy the movement left behind by Bhim Rao Ambedkar.

Calling the Congress and the BJP “chor-chor mausere bhai”, the Dalit leader said efforts were on to politically harm her and destroy her party.

“I want to ask the Congress why did Baba Saheb resign as Minister in 1951,” she said, likening it to her resignation from the Rajya Sabha in July 2017.

The Bahujan Samaj Party leader accused the Congress of deliberately holding back the recommendations of the Mandal Commission from implementation for several years.

She took on the BJP and said the “drama by the BJP and company” of putting up portraits of Ambedkar in government offices was an attempt to divert the attention of people.

“These two parties have kept the Dalits backwards, unemployed and ineffective for so long and atrocities and exploitation of these people continues.”

She alleged that the BJP was now conspiring against her “to make us politically redundant” and accused it of manipulating the EVMs in the 2014 general election and in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls last year.

She demanded that all further elections be held with a ballot paper.

She said a party which coined the slogan “Har Har Modi, Ghar char Modi” was almost made “beghar” (homeless) by the people of Gujarat in the Assembly elections last month.

Mayawati added that people were coming back to her party as was evident in the recently held urban body polls in Uttar Pradesh.

“People are now seeing through their game plan and very soon these casteist and communal forces will be thrown out by the people.”

She claimed that the BJP might advance the 2019 Lok Sabha election and hold them along with state assembly polls of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan slated for this year. “We are prepared for this.”

Volkswagen reports record global car sales in 2017

AFP | Detroit |

Volkswagen has said that its namesake brand sold more vehicles worldwide in 2017 than ever before, a sign it is recovering from a bruising emissions- cheating scandal three years ago.

“We finished 2017 with the best performance ever for Volkswagen,” Herbert Diess, chairman of the board of management of the Volkswagen passenger cars brand, said Sunday night at the Detroit Auto Show.

Global sales rose 4.2 per cent to 6.2 million, with sales in China jumping 5.9 per cent to 3.2 million, more than half the total sold globally.

Other countries with strong gains in terms of percentages included the United States, Russia and Brazil, although all of these countries are much smaller markets for VW than China.

VW’s sales dropped 0.1 per cent in Germany, due in part to a 4.7 per cent fall in Germany.

Diess reiterated VW’s apology over the dieselgate scandal that has cost it billions of dollars in settlements and government probes.

VW released the figures ahead of the launch of an updated version of the Jetta, its top-selling vehicle in the US. The base price of USD 18,545 won especially loud applause at a glitzy launch Sunday night.

The Jetta is among just a handful of sedans being launched at the 2018 show, which is dominated by pickup trucks and other large vehicles that have been outselling smaller cars in recent years in the US.

“As a full-line automaker family oriented, you need to have a competitive strong sedan,” VW North American chief executive Hinrich Woebcken told reporters after the launch.
