In a positive development for Indian workers in Kuwait, the Kuwaiti Public Authority for Manpower formed a team to address the grievances of the workers.

The team, which was formed on Sunday, will address the concerns of the Indian workers related to payment of salaries and employment in the West Asian country.

The announcement comes days after Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh met with aggrieved Indian workers and assured them of all possible help.

Indian workers in Kuwait have been facing issues related to their employment with companies in the Gulf nation. Many workers have not yet been paid salaries which are long overdue.

Singh was in Kuwait to discuss the issue of the migrant Indian workers with the authorities. Many of the workers have been charged with fines because their work permits have expired and the company they work for has refused to renew the same.

In his meeting with authorities, Singh had requested that the workers be allowed to leave the country without paying the fine since it was not their fault that their residence permit expired.

The eight-member team formed by the Kuwaiti Public Authority for Manpower will look into the grievances of the workers. Kuwait has assured that no effort will be spared for the protection of the interests of the workers.

Global economy on strong cyclical recovery: IMF

IANS | Hong Kong |

The global economy is getting stronger from cyclical recovery pointing to faster growth across regions, said a senior IMF official here on Monday.

“The cyclical recovery in the global economy is going from strength to strength. The signs point to faster growth across all regions,” International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) First Deputy Managing Director David Lipton said at the Asian Financial Forum.

Addressing the Forum’s 11th edition, he also said that India was reclaiming its place as a growth leader.

“India is reclaiming its place as a growth leader after a short slowdown,” Lipton told about 3,000 delegates from the world over participating in the two-day event, being held at the Hong Kong Convention Centre in the downtown.

Announcing that the multi-lateral funding agency IMF would give its world economic outlook for 2018 next week, he said the global economy was in a late stage of recovery from the global financial crisis of 2008.

“With economic slack in advanced economies diminishing, it is not clear how long the good news will continue.

“Now is the time to address vulnerabilities and structural issues that could impede sustained growth, and to take steps to enable stronger growth once cyclical growth is no longer driving the economy,” he said.

The “sun is shining” on the global economy with rising investments and consumer demand, he said.

Lipton is one of the keynote speakers at the annual financial summit that is being attended by at least 100 speakers from the global financial community with about 3,000 delegates attending from nearly 50 countries like China, Hong Kong and the US.

Mamata urges people to extend cooperation to businessmen

IANS | Kolkata |

Inaugurating the Rs 800 crore cement plant of JSW Group in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday appealed to people to “extend cooperation” to industries and treat businessmen as their “family members” so that industrialists do not face any problem in expanding their businesses.

Ahead of the two-day Bengal Global Business Summit starting from Tuesday, she also said perception about Bengal has been changing.

“There was a perception that the Bengal was not doing well, but now people think the state is really doing well,” Banerjee said.

Thanking local villagers and people at Salboni for cooperating with the group to set up its 2.4 MTPA (million tonnes per annum) cement manufacturing unit, Banerjee said: “Please maintain it for future also and extend your full cooperation so that they should not face any acute crisis or any problem.

“They (referring to JSW Group’s top leadership including Chairman Sajjan Jindal) are just like our family members. We have to care for our family members. If we don’t care for them, how will the business grow?”

Applauding the $12 billion JSW Group’s expansion plan in the state, she said: “Their intention is very good and we are excited for that.”

“West Bengal has been a preferred state for setting up one of our biggest cement manufacturing units. We are committed to staying invested in this state and are in fact planning to increase the capacity of our Salboni cement unit to 3.6 MTPA,” JSW Cement’s Managing Director Parth Jindal said.

“The Salboni unit’s capacity expansion is part of our goal to achieve an overall production capacity of20 MTPA by 2020,” he said.

The Salboni unit will service the company’s customer requirements in West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, and northern parts of Orissa.

Banerjee said the group would take over the Salboni Multi Super Speciality Hospital that was built by the state government.

IANS | Tupiza (Bolivia) |

Hero MotoSports Team Rally’s Oriol Mena and C.S. Santosh finished 18th and 42nd, respectively, after the Marathon stage at the Dakar Rally here.

Mena on Sunday completed the eighth stage — from Uyuni to Tupiza of 498 kms followed by an 87 km liaison section — at 12th position. His overall timing stands at 29 hours, five minutes.

Santosh finished the tough marathon stage at 38th position, which lands him at 42nd place in the overall rankings at the ends of stage 8 with a timing of 34 hours, 39 minutes and 24 seconds.

“I think this Marathon stage was the hardest I have ever done. It was incredibly difficult as we did 80 km off-piste and the camel grass. I was physically drained with the high altitude riding and also crashed a couple of times. By the time I reached the marathon bivouac I had nothing left in me,” Santosh said in a release.

France’s Antoine Meo won the stage, clocking five hours 24 minutes and one second on his KTM, more than a minute head of American Ricky Brabec on a Honda. Australian KTM rider Toby Price was third, almost three minutes off the pace, reports Xinhua news agency.

France’s Yamaha rider Adrien Van Beveren leads the overall bike standings by just 22 seconds from Argentina’s Kevin Benavides on a Honda. Austria’s Matthias Walkner is third, more than six-and-a-half minutes behind on his KTM.

In the four-wheeler category, France’s defending champion Stephane Peterhansel held off compatriot and Peugeot teammate Cyril Despres to win the eighth stage.

Peterhansel finished the 498km timed section from Uyuni to Tupiza in five hours 15 minutes and 18 seconds — 49 seconds ahead of Despres and more than two minutes faster than Toyota’s Qatari driver Nasser Al-Attiyah.

Spain’s Carlos Sainz, fifth in Sunday’s stage, remains the overall leader, more than an hour ahead of Al-Attiyah with Peterhansel third, another seven minutes further back.

Kamala Mills fire incident has shaken our conscience: Bombay HC

PTI | Mumbai |

The Kamala Mills compound blaze that claimed 14 lives has shaken the conscience of society and is an eye-opener, the Bombay High Court said on Monday and held that the tragedy was a result of the administration’s failure to ensure strict adherence to fire safety norms.

The court asked the city’s civic body to bring its house in order.

The HC made the observations while hearing a PIL filed by former Mumbai police commissioner Julio Ribeiro, seeking a judicial inquiry into the incident and also a direction to the government and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to carry out fire safety audit of all eateries and restaurants.

“The unfortunate incident has shaken our conscience. It is time the BMC keeps its house in order,” a division bench of Justices R M Borde and R G Ketkar said.

Fourteen people had died and over 30 others injured when a massive swept through ‘1 Above’ and ‘Mojo’s Bistro’ pubs in the Kamala Mills compound in central Mumbai on December 29.

BMC’s counsel Anil Sakhare told the court today that the state government had directed the civic body chief, Ajoy Mehta, to submit a report on the incident.

The commissioner is expected to submit his report by the end of this week, he said.

The court directed the civic body to also submit a copy of the report to it on the next date of hearing on February 12.

The HC also directed the corporation to file a detailed affidavit, giving details of conditions that are to be followed before granting licence to commercial establishments to serve food and beverages.

The bench said it expects the corporation to perform its statutory obligations.

“The fire incident is a result of failure of the administration system to ensure strict adherence to regulations and conditions imposed on such eating hubs, bars, pubs and so on,” Justice Borde said.

“The fire incident has opened our eyes and led us to examine the issue. We would like to know from the BMC what conditions are laid down and are mandated to be fulfilled before granting a licence for establishments serving food and beverages,” he said.

In this particular case (Kamala Mills fire), the fire department report says the pubs did not even have the licence, the court said.

“If the establishments are allowed to cook and serve food, then it should be ensured that they have proper infrastructure. Even the fire safety norms have to be strictly implemented,” Justice Borde said.

The court said it was the time the civic body carried out a survey of such establishments after granting licences.

After granting a licence, the authorities have to keep re-examining to see if the conditions and norms are being followed, Justice Borde said.

The court said it was possible that some establishments, over a period of time, constructed temporary sheds which went beyond the sanctioned plan.

“All the points raised by this court will be covered in the report. If there is anything additional that would also be covered,” the judge ordered.

The court said the corporation should also keep a check on the roadside food stalls.

The court today also permitted the Indian Hotel and Restaurant Association to intervene in the matter.

Ribeiro, in his Public Interest Litigation filed last week, claimed that the incident exposed gross negligence and omission of duties by civic body officials in complying with the fire safety norms.

The petition has sought a direction to the fire department to conduct a comprehensive fire safety audit of each and every eatery, restaurant, pub and bar which has been issued licence by the civic body.

“The court shall also set up a judicial commission for fixing up the accountability of public officers and private persons involved in the tragic incident,” the petition said.

It also sought constitution of a special investigation team to probe the incident.

Congress reiterates demand for Supreme Court supervised probe into death of Judge Loya

SNS | New Delhi |

A day after late Judge Brijgopal Harkishan Loya’s son ruled out any angle of suspicion over his father’s death, the Congress again demanded a probe into the death of the CBI judge.

Speaking to reporters on 15 January, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi demanded that a probe should be conducted within the ambit of the law.

“The country is demanding an inquiry into judge Loya’s death,” said Singhvi.

“Some issues are probed based on the significance of the issue. As a responsible party and citizen we have the right to call for an impartial, time-bound and independent probe by Supreme Court,” he said.

There is no harm if an inquiry is conducted impartially, he added.

Anuj Loya, the son of Judge Loya, requested that his family should not be harassed by NGOs and politicians over the death of his father.

Addressing media persons on 14 January he said that though he had doubts about his father’s death earlier, he no longer suspects the manner in which judge Loya died.

Judge Loya passed away on 1 December 2014 of a cardiac arrest in Nagpur, where he had gone to attend a wedding.

The 48-year-old judge was hearing the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case at the time when BJP chief Amit Shah was one of the accused. Shah was discharged on 30 December 2014.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi had on 12 January demanded a probe under the watch of the Supreme Court.

Commerce Min for slashing gold import duty in Budget

PTI | New Delhi |

The commerce ministry has pitched for reduction in import duty on gold in the forthcoming Budget with an aim to promote gold jewellery exports, a senior government official said.

The Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) has demanded cut in import duty on gold to 4 per cent from the current 10 per cent.

The sector contributes significantly in the country’s overall exports.

“We always propose cut in import duty on gold.

We take it up everytime…We are really a big user of gold and we need to be a big exporter of the gold jewellery,” the official said.

About 80 per cent of the imported gold is consumed by the jewellery industry and India has one of the best artisans working in the sector.

“Why not we actually, freely import more gold and export value added gold products. If it happens, then sudden surge of gold imports from FTA (free trade agreement) countries will also stop,” the official added.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli rattled the South African pacers to score 21st century of his Test career on Day 3 of the second Test at SuperSport Park, Centurion, on Monday.

Resuming the innings at an overnight score of 183 for five, Kohli took the charge and till lunch, the visitors had reached 287 runs for 7. With his century, Virat (ODI-32, Test-21, T20I-0) also equalled the record of cricket great Brian Lara, who has also scored 53 centuries in all formats of the game.

Virat’s century against South Africa is his 11th on the foreign soil and it could be considered to be one of the most important in his cricketing career.

Earlier, Virat Kohli along with team management and coach Ravi Shastri had come under heavy criticism for ignoring Test specialist Ajinkya and for dropping the star Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar for Ishant Sharma.

Virat was also back-lashed on different social networking sites after getting out cheaply in the opening Test match in Newlands Cape Town.

The Indian cricket fans, who were earlier upset with the selection of playing eleven and dismissal of Cheteshwar Pujara and Rohit Sharma, came forward to applaud the performance of Virat Kohli.

“It’s funny. Before the last Test, everyone was saying Ajinkya Rahane should not be included in playing XI. Now, in one week, that has changed. Everyone is saying he should be. We don’t decide the playing XI as per outside opinion,” Kohli had told reporters ahead of the 2nd Test.

Till the filing of this report, India was bowled out at the score of 307 runs.
