Sharon Stone had 5 per cent chance of living

IANS | Los Angeles |

Actress Sharon Stone says she there was a time when she had just “five per cent chance” of surviving. It was when she suffered brain haemorrhage in 2001.

Stone, 59, said that she had to re-learn “everything” when her life was “wiped out” as a result of the medical condition.

The actress, who will be returning to TV in Steven Soderbergh’s “Mosaic”, said: “There was about a five per cent chance of me living. My whole life was wiped out. Others aren’t that interested in a broken person. I was alone.

“I’m sure I seemed peculiar coming through this all these years, and I didn’t want to tell everybody what was happening because, you know, this is not a forgiving environment. I’m so grateful to have this. The chance of my having it was so slim.”

While the “Basic Instinct” star is back in the film industry again, she still has some alone time and likes to spend some of it talking to her tree.

“I talk to my tree… it’s pretty fabulous, it smells so great,” said Stone, who has adopted sons Roan, 17, Laird, 12, and Quinn, 11.

She says she has “seen it all” in the entertainment industry over the last 40 years, and is pleased to see women are becoming more “empowered”.

Asked if she has ever been in a position when she has felt “uncomfortable”, she laughed and replied: “Oh, I’ve been in this business for 40 years. Can you imagine the business I stepped into 40 years ago?

“Looking like I look, from nowhere, Pennsylvania? I didn’t come here with any protection. I’ve seen it all. We’re starting to acknowledge our own gifts as women and not think that we have to behave as men in order to be empowered or powerful or valuable,” she said.

Kevin Spacey accused of racism

IANS | Los Angeles |

Actor Kevin Spacey has been accused of racism and refusing to acknowledge black employees on the first season of House of Cards.

Earl Blue, 51, the head of VIP Protective Services, was hired by Knight Takes King Productions to manage on-set security during season one filming of the Netflix series in 2012.

He claims Spacey, who played the lead character Frank Underwood in “House of Cards”, refused to acknowledge the black team members and even made racial slurs, reports dailymail.co.uk.

Blue said a group of black security guards were watching the trailer for the show when he heard the actor tell his personal security manager: “I don’t want n***ers watching my trailer.”

When Blue raised concerns with set managers about Spacey, who was referred to as “The Powers That Be”, he was told: ‘That’s just the way he is; we have got to keep him happy’.”

Despite producers allegedly telling VIP Protective Services that they were pleased with their work, their $1.1 million contract was not renewed.

Breaking his four-year silence, father-of-three Blue, who plans to sue Spacey, claims the fallout resulted in his business, which employs 40 guards, losing millions of dollars in revenue.

One of his employees, supervisor Eric Lyles, 47, corroborated Blue’s allegations and claimed Spacey also refused to shake his hand or acknowledge him.

The pair fear dozens more will have suffered discrimination at the hands of the Hollywood star, who has separately been accused of sexual assault by more than a dozen men.

Blue said: “I was a tremendous fan of the man but now I am disgusted by him. I lost faith that I am in the right job after the contract was terminated. I questioned myself for months. What could I have done differently?

“Then I came to the realisation that I did everything I was supposed to do, I was just dealing with a racist man.

“I sat on it for four years because I believe in confidentiality but when it comes to the point where people are being harmed, enough is enough. I realized he was getting worse and worse.”

A former employee of Knight Takes King, who asked not to be named, said he has “no particular recollection” of Spacey behaving in a racist manner towards security staff.

However, he said Spacey was a “real a*****e” who was “temperamental” on set and would “get frustrated” if things didn’t go his way.

He said the reason Blue’s contract was severed was “never explained”.

Producer Iain Paterson declined to discuss the allegations but said VIP Protective Services’s work was found to be “unsatisfactory”, reports dailymail.co.uk.

A source claimed: “VIP Protective Services had the set security contract for season one, when break-ins occurred in both the make-up trailer and Kevin Spacey’s trailer.

“The contract for set security was then awarded to Master Security for Season 2-6, yet VIP has continued to bid each year.”

Blue denied the claim and said: “There were no break-ins. I pride myself on our service and integrity so to hear these lies has struck a cord. No reason was given for terminating the contract.”

Kylie called her mother to inform her that she caught one of her employees taking photos of her in her own home. Kris is upset about it.

“I really feel bad for Kylie because there’s always somebody that’s trying to exploit a certain situation,” Kris said.

“To have somebody in her own home trying to snap pictures they shouldn’t be snapping is really, really stressful. The 62-year-old pondered whether she should be getting the police involved.

She questioned: “Should we have her arrested?”

Kris was also stressed over son Rob’s custody dispute with former fiancee Blac Chyna over their daughter Dream, 14 months.

She said: “I’ve got kids with problems, I can’t stay anywhere for more than five minutes! I swear to God, I’m going to lock myself on a funny farm. There’s just a lot going on. It’s Rob and the whole custody thing and settling, and it’s just wild.

“It’s stressful because, at the end of the day, I’m trying to help him navigate this because he’s never gone through anything like this before.”

IANS | Los Angeles |

Model Dita Von Teese plans to embrace her grey hair when the time comes.

During an interview for the Daily Telegraph newspaper, she was asked if she can see a day when she will embrace the grey.

She said: “Oh definitely. Every two weeks, when I pull out that box of black dye, I’m like, ‘God, wouldn’t it be great to not be doing this?’ But be careful what you wish for, right?”

Her burlesque shows are still hugely popular. But Von Teese said she considered retiring two years ago before realising she wants to be an “example” for older women.

“I had a lot of pressure from my former producing partner. Every night I’d come offstage and she’d be like, ‘Oh, you didn’t look so good right there… Can we cover up this? You need to really suck it in.

I was thinking, ‘Oh God, maybe I should quit before people start seeing all the flaws that could arise from the ageing process. It was starting to get to me.

“(But) it occurred to me that there are all these women who are older that I admire, Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani, Madonna, and they are all out there still. It has meaning for me to watch them go through different phases of life and still embrace their sexuality and sensuality. I need to be an example as well. I love performing burlesque, people still want to see me do it.”

Shami reduces S Africa to 173/5 at lunch on Day 4

Faf du Plessis (12 batting) and Vernon Philalnder (3 batting) were unbeaten for the hosts at the break.

IANS | Centurion |

Seamer Mohammed Shami took three wickets to India pull India into contention in the second Test as they reduced South Africa to 173/5 in their second innings at lunch on the fourth day here on Tuesday for a 201-run lead.

Shami removed AB de Villiers (80), Dean Elgar (61) and Quinton de Kock (12) in the first session of play as the hosts managed to add 83 runs to their overnight score of 90/2.

Faf du Plessis (12 batting) and Vernon Philalnder (3 batting) were unbeaten for the hosts at the break.

The overnight partnership of de Villiers and Elgar threatened to take the game away from India. They had joined hands with South Africa at 3/2 and on Tuesday, they continued from where they left.

Both of them looked bright and maintained a very healthy rate in the first hour of play with boundries coming their way easily.

While de Villiers in control against the Indian bowlers, Elgar, who completed his ninth Test career fifty, was resolute.

Shami broke the stand at 141 runs when a rising delivery kissed de Villiers’ gloves for an easy catch to waiting wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel.

Soon, left-hander Elgar pulled one straight into the hands of Lokesh Rahul at deep square leg as the hosts lost their fourth wicket for 151 runs.

It could have been 151/5 had Rahul pulled off a half chance at short-leg off du Plessis, who was then on six. Du Plessis struggled against off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and managed to push it to the right of Rahul.

Shami continued his impressive spell as the got rid of de Kock, who edged an away-moving ball to Parthiv, leaving his side at 163/5.

Du Plessis and Philander negated the Indian bowlers till the umpires called for lunch.

Brief scores: South Africa: 335 all out and 173/5 (AB de Villiers 80, Dean Elgar 61; Mohammed Shami 3/38, Jasprit Bumrah 2/47) vs India: 307 all out in first innings at lunch on Day 4.

President Kovind address AIIMS 45th convocation ceremony in Delhi

SNS | New Delhi |

President Ram Nath Kovind, graced and addressed the 45th convocation of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Kovind said that AIIMS is a national centre of excellence. In medical research and healthcare, it is a model for the country. The name “AIIMS” has become a byword for quality, commitment and rich experience. The faculty and doctors, as well as of course the students, are the pride of our medical fraternity and our nation.

Kovind advised the graduating doctors that as they go into the world – a world that needs their services more than ever before – they should remember that they need to give back to society. He stated that it is true that they need to be legitimately rewarded for their academic excellence, their medical skills and their expertise.

Pointing out the shortage of doctors in our country, Kovind said that there is need of a new regulatory system to enhance availability of doctors and medical professionals in our society. In the absence of this, the work-load on our doctors is very high.

Kovind said that currently our medical colleges, whether run by the government or private institutions, have only about 67,000 undergraduate seats and 31,000 postgraduate seats. In a country of 1.3 billion people this is highly inadequate. We have to overcome regulatory bottlenecks and interest groups that have prevented the growth of quality medical education in our country.

As a nation, we need to address this situation very urgently. We need to create more opportunities for those young people who want to make medicine their calling, Kovind added.
