Terrorism is mother of all disruptions: Sushma Swaraj

SNS | New Delhi |

India on Wednesday called terrorism as the ‘mother of all disruptions’ and, in an obvious reference to Pakistan, said what was even more dangerous was the fact that the scourge was being actively supported and sponsored by states.

“Ensuring zero-tolerance towards terrorism is the call of the day. To expect that an activity which draws on all the ills of the world—fanaticism, crime, bloodshed and illegal trade—will not have a corrosive impact beyond its intended arena is unrealistic,” External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said while addressing the ‘Raising Dialogue’, organised by the External Affairs Ministry and the Observer Research Foundation (ORF).

She recalled that there was a time when terrorism was seen as other people’s problem or a law and order situation. Not just that, it was also actively utilised as an instrument of statecraft. That time has long gone by.

Terrorism anywhere could threaten societies everywhere, she observed, adding the challenge was even more serious in a digital age, with the greater propensity to radicalisation. “However, there are still old assumptions and established mindsets in this regard. Partly because of the 9/11 precedent, we associate terrorism with ungoverned spaces,” she regretted.

“The more recent example of ISIS has reinforced this stereotype,” she added.

Swaraj also spoke at length about the threat of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, calling it another disruptive element. “While it has its own history, we should not ignore the fact that proliferation threats are encouraged in large measure by arguments that favour the actual use of WMDs, especially nuclear weapons,” she added.

Alluding to New Delhi’s charge that Pakistan had assisted North Korea in developing its nuclear programme, the Indian minister said many contemporary developments have their roots in long-standing proliferation linkages that the world deliberately chose to overlook. “Like terrorism, nuclear proliferation cannot be addressed effectively in a segmented manner. Fuller disclosure and greater accountability are a must,” she added.

Swaraj also had a dig at China without naming the country over its ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which is being opposed by New Delhi since the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the flagship project of the initiative, runs through the Indian territory under Pakistan’s illegal occupation.

“In a globalised economy, it is important that the building of connectivity is a consultative process. Not just consultative but also one based on norms of transparency, good governance, commercial viability, fiscal responsibility and respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity,” she added.

BJP suppressing Muslims: Ram Gobind Chaudhary

PTI | Ballia |

Leader of Opposition in Uttar Pradesh Assembly Ram Gobind Chaudhary on Wednesday accused the BJP of suppressing the Muslims and said all the facilities being stopped by the BJP government, will be resumed by the SP, once it comes to power.

Union Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Tuesday announced in Delhi that there will be no subsidy for Haj from this year and had said the move was part of the government’s efforts to “empower minorities” without appeasement.

Chaudhary said, “The recent move by the Centre to end Haj subsidy for Muslims is ‘daman’ (an act of suppression)… In Uttar Pradesh and at the Centre, since the formation of the BJP-led governments, facilities being given to Muslims are being snatched one after the other.”

The senior Samajwadi Party leader also claimed that the BJP government is trying to terrorise the Muslims in order to bring them (Muslims) to support the party.

“After ending the Haj subsidy, the BJP government may take a decision to stop the funds given to the madrassas,” Chaudhary said.

He said, “The SP is with the Muslims, and once it comes back to power, it will restore all the facilities to the Muslims, which were stopped by the BJP government.”

Chaudhary also told the BJP that Muslims will not be feared by their (BJP’s) antics.

A record number of 1.75 lakh Muslims will undertake the pilgrimage this year from India, Naqvi had said, adding the government had spent over Rs 250 crore last year on subsidising the annual pilgrimage of Muslims to Saudi Arabia.

The decision is in line with a 2012 Supreme Court order, asking the government to do away with the subsidy, which had long been sought by the BJP.

The BJP had cited the subsidy as an example of “Muslim appeasement” by parties such as the Congress.

Diego Maradona’s daughter’s wedding fuels family drama

Dalma Maradona is due to marry Andres Caldarelli in April and apparently failed to invite her stepmother

AFP | Buesnos Aires |

Football legend Diego Maradona has some larger than life family drama on his plate: bad blood between a ready-to-wed daughter and his current wife.

Dalma Maradona is due to marry Andres Caldarelli in April and apparently failed to invite her stepmother.

Argentine media are buzzing over whether the soccer star, who coaches Al Fujairah SC, will attend at all.

Asked about his plans in Dubai by Diario Popular, Maradona was characteristically blunt.

“My wife is Rocio (Oliva). And if she is not invited, I’m not going,” he said.

The underlying family row, as usual in Argentina, is making headlines.

“She won’t be the first bride or the last to marry without her father being there,” Maradona, 57, said sounding as if minds had been made up.

The World Cup star was married for many years to Claudia Villafane, with whom he had two daughters, Dalma and Giannina.

He also has acknowledged having three children with other women.

In October, Maradona beat the future bride and groom to the punch announcing their upcoming nuptials on Instagram.

“For me, it’s very painful. I have (Dalma) tattooed on my skin because I love her. Just like I love Giannina and every one of my kids. It makes my soul ache to have to make this decision. But it’s the only choice.” AFP SSC

Mamata remembers Jyoti Basu on death anniversary

IANS | Kolkata |

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday remembered former Chief Minister and Marxist leader Jyoti Basu on his seventh death anniversary.

“Solemnly remembering … Jyoti Basu,” she tweeted.

Basu, an iconic Left leader, was the longest serving Chief Minister of the state from 1977 to 2000. He died on January 17, 2010.

Opposition demands removal of Jharkhand Chief Secretary, DGP

IANS | Ranchi |

The Jharkhand Assembly’s Budget Session began on a raucous note on Wednesday with the opposition vociferously demanding the removal of the state Chief Secretary and DGP in connection with treasury withdrawals in a fodder scam and an allegedly staged shootout, respectively.

The opposition MLAs led by Leader of Opposition Hemant Soren stood at the assembly entrance to demand removal of the two top state officials. They were carrying banners reading ‘Dismiss DGP, remove Chief secretary from her post”.

The opposition also shouted slogans when Governor Draupadi Murmu was addressing the house on the first day of the Budget Session.

Chief Secretary Rajbala Verma was accused of doing nothing to prevent fraudulent withdrawals from the Chaibasa treasury as the then Deputy Commissioner of West Singhbhum in the early 1990s. The fraudulent withdrawal, which had taken place in the Animal Husbandry Department, is popularly known as the fodder scam.

The Central Bureau of Investigation had served notice on her in 2003 but she allegedly did not respond despite over 15 reminders.

After the local media brought up the issue, the state government issued her a show-cause notice this month. Though the Chief Secretary has submitted a reply, the state has yet to decide on the matter.

Director General of Police D.K. Pandey found himself in opposition cross-hairs with regard to a shootout at Bakoria in Latehar district in 2015, in which innocent persons were allegedly killed on the pretext of gun battle with Maoists.

The Jharkhand High Court had also sought a reply from the state government on the Bakoria shootout.

Crime Investigation Department (CID) Additional Director General M.V. Rao, in a letter to the state Home Secretary, allegedly said that the DGP had asked him to go slow with the CID investigation in the case. Rao has since been transferred out of the CID.

“The Raghubar Das government claims to be clean but its two top officials are facing serious charges and the government is not removing them. What is the reason for shielding them? They should be removed for an impartial probe,” Hemant Soren told the media.

Bengal nets over Rs 2 lakh cr of investment proposals

IANS | Kolkata |

The two-day Bengal Global Business Summit organised by the state government has so far received new investment proposals worth Rs 2,19,925 crore, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced here on Wednesday.

Addressing delegates on the concluding day of the meet, Banerjee said 50 per cent of last year’s business proposals and that of previous years are “in the process”.

“The new investment proposals for this year that we have received is Rs 2,19,925 crore. It may go up also,” she said.

The opposition parties in the state — the Congress, the BJP and the CPI-M — on Tuesday demanded a White Paper from the government on the number of proposals the state had received in the earlier summits had fructified.

The Chief Minister said: “Whatever we discussed the business summit, you cannot say that we only discuss or give hope. We talk less, work more.

“Even in last year, of what we discussed, 50 per cent of businesses (proposals) is in the process… Earlier also the situation was like this,” she said.

According to the state government, the 2015 summit fetched investment proposals of Rs 2.43 lakh crore and the 2016 edition received over Rs 2.5 lakh crore.

Over 2.35 lakh crore of business announcements were received by the state in the last edition of the summit.

Terming the fourth edition of the business summit a successful event, she said 1,040 B2B and 40 B2G meetings were held in the summit and 110 MoUs would be signed.

The next year’s summit will be held on February 7 and 8.

Thanking Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani for his Rs 5,000 crore investment proposals in the state, she said more than one lakh crore employment would be created in the particular sectors.

According to her, more than 32 countries and over 4,000 delegates participated in the 2018 edition.

“Your kind presence made the summit successful. Your kind presence is our inspiration and strength. You are our great assets. We are delighted to know about your vision,” Banerjee said.

She described the state as the investment destination as it has political stability and is “labour, talent and economic-friendly”.

According to her, West Bengal is strategically placed for businesses for Asean countries including neighbouring countries of Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan and northeastern states of India.

“Bengal deserves to be a global industrial hub,” she told delegates at the summit.

“We are the united family and cosmopolitan family. There are no differences between the caste, creed. Tolerance is the key. If you don’t tolerate the people, you would not get the result,” she reiterated.

Don’t know why they prepared this kind of pitch: Shami

Shami took 4/49 in the South African second innings as the hosts were bowled out for 258

PTI | Centurion |

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami today expressed surprise at South Africa rolling out a sub- continental type of pitch for the second cricket Test here.

India were reduced to 35/3 while chasing 287 for a series-leveling victory at stumps on the fourth day.

“I did not expect the ball would stay so low in this wicket. Till now in overseas conditions, we have not seen such slow and low bounce wickets. So I don’t know what they were thinking when they made this wicket. But whatever it is we have to play on it and the conditions are same for both teams.

Tomorrow we will try to win,” said Shami.

“The wicket has been slow since the beginning, even on the first day you saw that it is going low continuously. And even today, it went slow and low and you needed a lot of extra effort. We tried to give 110-120 percent. That was more important for us,” he said at the post-match press conference.

Shami took 4/49 in the South African second innings as the hosts were bowled out for 258. He took three wickets in the morning session, but bowled only the last over of the post-lunch session. He did not even come on to bowl when he had the chance of taking a five-wicket haul.

“It depends on the captain when he wants to bowl which bowler. It also depends on the conditions. I bowled before lunch so I could not bowl immediately. So the captain is also thinking that we should bowl with rotation. The plan was that whenever I will get chance I will come to bowl,” said Shami.

“There are some stages in front of you that you want to bowl more but the captain thinks that we should get them out quickly. So you cannot mind that, but yes, sometimes you do feel inside that maybe I could have got five wickets. But if you see from team’s point of view, you will not feel like this,” he added.

South Africa’s lower-order stonewalled the Indian bowling post lunch and India did not take the second new ball available to them.

Asked if India should have attacked more, Shami said, “Today, the whole day, we were looking to give away as few runs as possible and we wanted to attack them fully. We went all out on attack and gave away as few runs as possible. We wanted to bowl in good areas as we had given them 28-run lead.

So we wanted to restrict them to as low a score as possible and bowl in good areas as much as possible.

“For any bowler, it is a lot of frustration when the fielder is there and edges are coming, what you want is happening but the batsman isn’t getting out. So there is a little frustration mentally but you need to be mentally strong at that stage and how long you can persist with it, that is more important. Like Quinton de Kock got three boundaries on three consecutive good balls, but I did the same again and I got result on that,” he added.

Talking about missed chances in slip cordon, he said, “When you make a unit and get 15 guys to play for the country then you should have self belief, and mix up with each other, so that this is our best and we will make him stand in slips.

It is part of the game that you will drop some catches but we are not robots or machines that we will catch all of them. We can only try and then the rest is dependent on luck.”

Having already lost three wickets, India have a tough ask ahead of them on day five tomorrow.

Asked about the team’s chances, Shami said, “About the result, we have stopped them at a very good target and the rest is about luck.” PTI

Bikinis allowed in Goa because of Opinion Poll: Deputy Speaker

IANS | Panaji |

The Opinion Poll of 1967, a historic referendum in Goa, may have helped the former Portuguese colony retain its own unique identity but Assembly Deputy Speaker and BJP MLA Michael Lobo feel the Opinion Poll is also the reason why bikinis are allowed in the coastal state.

Lobo’s speech, delivered on Tuesday at one of the numerous events held to mark the Opinion Poll day, where he justifies why bikinis in Goa are allowed because of the Opinion Poll against a merger with Maharashtra, has gone viral on Wednesday on social media.

“The development which has happened here (in Goa), the fact that international tourists come to this destination… To go to the last limit, a bikini is allowed on the beach is because of this Opinion Poll day,” Lobo said.

“I am going into that because in Maharashtra it is not allowed. Let us be very frank. In Maharashtra it is not allowed, otherwise, tourism would have flourished there,” Lobo also said.

During the historic referendum known in Goa as ‘Opinion Poll’ day, on January 16, 1967, 54.20 per cent of the population voted for Goa to be a separate territory while 43.50 per cent voted for merging the newly liberated region into neighbouring Maharashtra.

The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party had backed the merger while United Goans, led by late Jack Sequeira, batted for Goa being recognised as an independent region in the Indian Union.

Goa was liberated from Portuguese rule in 1961 and was eventually granted statehood in 1987 after years of being governed as a Union Territory.

Lobo also said that Goa and its people should give proper due to Opinion Poll day by hosting an official function in Panaji to commemorate the occasion every year.

I’m telling the truth: Farrow

IANS | Los Angeles |

Actress Dylan Farrow, adopted daughter of Woody Allen, says the sexual allegations she has put across against the veteran filmmaker are true.

In the wake of the Time’s Up and #MeToo movements, Farrow will sit down with CBS This Morning co-host Gayle King to discuss her allegations against Allen. It will air on Thursday, reports variety.com.

However, in a preview released on Wednesday, Farrow said: “I am credible and I am telling the truth. It’s important that people realise that one victim, one accuser, matters. And that they are enough to change things.”

Farrow, the adopted daughter of Allen and Mia Farrow, has been vocal in the past about her accusations of sexual abuse against the director.

She accused him of taking her into an attic and assaulting her in 1992 when she was 7 years old. Allen has repeatedly denied it.

Some other stars too have started turning against Allen, like Lady Bird writer and director Greta Gerwig, who acted in Allen’s film To Rome With Love, saying that if she had known, she would not have acted in the film.

“I have not worked for him again and I will not work for him again,” she said.

“Call Me by Your Name” star Timothee Chalamet, who has a leading role in Allen’s upcoming film “A Rainy Day in New York”, has announced he would be donating his full salary from the film to Time’s Up, LGBT Center in New York and anti-sexual assault organization RAINN.

Actress Rebecca Hall, who is also in A Rainy Day in New York, too has donated her salary from the film to Time’s Up.

CPI-M flays abrupt end to Haj subsidy

IANS | New Delhi |

The CPI-M on Wednesday criticized the government for abruptly stopping the Haj subsidy for pilgrims when the Supreme Court ruled in 2012 that this should be phased out over a 10-year period.

“The sudden withdrawal of the subsidy seems arbitrary and motivated by other considerations,” the Communist Party of India-Marxist said in a statement.

“As per the secular principle of the State, the CPI-M is not for State subsidy, or, funding of religious pilgrimages undertaken by individuals whichever religion they belong to.

“Hence, there should be no Central or state government funding, as it exists today, of providing subsidies and grants for individuals to go on religious pilgrimages,” the statement added.

Clicks can be bought, don’t believe in number games: Sanjay Suri

IANS | Mumbai |

Actor-producer Sanjay Suri, whose next is My Birthday Song, says he is not in the rat race of the number game.

Sanjay, who has produced films like Sorry Bhai and I Am in the past, says that he is thankful to all the celebrities who have supported him for My Birthday Song, directed by Samir Soni.

He said here: “Our film has been supported by big personalities of Hindi film industry. Karan Johar launched the poster of the film and Salman Khan launched trailer of our film, so we are thankful to them because I am an independent filmmaker, so we don’t have those means to reach up to the audience.

“Apart from that, the audience has given positive feedback to the trailer of our film. I don’t believe in number games. When the film’s trailer gets released, then within half a day, it crosses 5-10 millions views.

“Clicks can be bought, I don’t say everyone does that, but it exists. If you see Oscar-winning movies, their lifetime views are around 1.2-1.5 millions, but here after the trailer launch, it crosses 10 millions views. So, I haven’t got involved in number games, and in future also I don’t have intensions to do that.”

My Birthday Song is releasing on Friday.
