Nimesulide ban: Govt bars sale of oral painkiller doses above 100 mg

The government has barred the manufacture and sale of oral nimesulide formulations above 100 mg, saying higher doses carry health risks and safer options are available.

Statesman News Service | Mumbai |

The Union government has banned the manufacture and sale of all oral medicines containing more than 100 mg of the painkiller nimesulide, saying higher doses pose a risk to patients.

The order, issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, applies to immediate-release oral formulations and comes into effect immediately. Officials said the move was taken after assessing safety concerns and noting that other pain-relief options are available.

Nimesulide ban notification

The government said the decision on nimesulide was taken under provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, following consultations with the Drugs Technical Advisory Board. It described the restriction as necessary in the public interest.

Nimesulide has been the subject of regulatory scrutiny for years, particularly over its use at higher strengths. While some formulations of the drug remain permitted, the latest notification removes stronger oral doses from the market.

In a separate notification, the Centre has also proposed amendments to the Drugs Rules, 1945. The proposed changes pertain to Schedule K, which lists medicines that are exempt from certain licensing conditions. Public comments and objections have been invited and will be accepted for 30 days.

Yearender: SP eager to present an alternative to BJP throughout the year, but failed to transform issues into mass movements

While out of power, the SP played the role of an aggressive opposition against the BJP government, and at the same time, it also reflected on its internal weaknesses and social base.

Manoj Bhadra | Lucknow |

The year 2025 was neither a year of success nor failure for the Samajwadi Party (SP). It emerged as a period of self-analysis, organisational restructuring, and strategic preparation for 2027 for the party.

While out of power, the SP played the role of an aggressive opposition against the BJP government, and at the same time, it also reflected on its internal weaknesses and social base.

In 2025, the Samajwadi Party continuously targeted the BJP government in the state on issues such as unemployment, inflation, farmers’ distress, law and order, privatisation, and reservations.

Inside and outside the assembly, party leaders accused the government, stating that “claims of development are limited to paper, while the common people are suffering on the ground.” The SP particularly used issues like farmer payments, crop procurement, mismanagement in health services, and privatisation in education as major political weapons.

However, political analysts believe that while the SP’s issues were relevant, the party was not entirely successful in transforming them into widespread mass movements. On issues like Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and fertilisers, the party remained limited to mere rhetoric. The party did not engage in any struggle on the streets. Despite campaigning in the Bihar elections and supporting the RJD, the party failed to make any significant impact.

In 2025, Akhilesh Yadav remained at the centre of SP politics. Along with sharp attacks on the BJP government, he held continuous meetings, tours, and dialogue programmes to keep the organisation active. Akhilesh Yadav tried to further strengthen the ‘PDA’ (Backward-Dalit-Minority) politics. He said his focus was clear with issues including social justice, protection of reservations, and safeguarding the Constitution.

The SP argued that the BJP government was weakening the reservation system through privatisation and contractual employment. The SP made this issue the central point of its political narrative. There was also discussion in political circles that Akhilesh Yadav, in 2025, attempted to present himself not merely as an aggressive leader, but as a viable alternative chief minister. In 2025, the Samajwadi Party (SP) took steps to activate its organisation down to the booth level, holding district and divisional level review meetings and reconnecting with young and veteran party workers.

Although there were no assembly elections in 2025, the SP had its sights set on the 2026 panchayat elections and the 2027 assembly elections. The party indicated that strategies regarding ticket distribution, local leadership, and social balance would be planned well in advance. It also became clear that the SP now wants to focus not only on caste arithmetic but also on local issues and performance-based politics.

While a large portion of the Muslim vote is still considered to be with the SP, it is also clear that the Muslim community is now moving beyond the politics of having no alternative and is prioritising an effective opposition and the ability to win. If the SP appears weak, a portion of the Muslim vote might shift towards strategic voting, a signal that serves as a warning for the SP.

According to political analysts, the PDA (Pichda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak)—Backward Classes, Dalits, Minorities—concept provided the party with ideological clarity, but translating it fully into electoral success remains a challenge.

Rajasthan: Explosives seized in Tonk on New Year’s eve, raising security concerns; two arrested

Rajasthan Police today seized a large cache of explosives from a car in Tonk district, heightening serious security concerns ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Rajasthan Police today seized a large cache of explosives from a car in Tonk district, heightening serious security concerns ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations.

According to the police, a car was intercepted in the Baroni police station following a tip-off and explosives were recovered. The police seized nearly 150 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, concealed in sacks of urea. In addition to the explosive material, police recovered 200 explosive batteries and about 1,100 metres of wire.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Mrityunjay Mishra said, “Explosives were seized from a Maruti Ciaz car. 150 kg of ammonium nitrate hidden in sacks of urea seized. In addition, police recovered 200 explosive batteries and 1100 meters of wire. Two accused have been arrested.”

Two accused, identified as Surendra Patwa and Surendra Mochi, have been arrested in connection with the case. Both the accused are residents of Bundi district. However, an investigation is still underway to ascertain the source of the explosives and their intended use.

The timing of the seizure, just hours before New Year’s Eve festivities, has alarmed security agencies already on high alert across the country. Security has been tightened across sensitive locations, marketplaces, and public gathering spots as authorities work to ensure a safe and incident-free New Year.

Three inmates go missing from Jharkhand’s Hazaribag Central Jail, security under scanner

Three inmates have gone missing from the Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan Central Jail in Jharkhand, triggering concern within the state administration over security arrangements at the high-security prison.

Statesman News Service | Hazaribag |

Three inmates have gone missing from the Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan Central Jail in Jharkhand, triggering concern within the state administration over security arrangements at the high-security prison.

Confirming the incident, Jail Superintendent Chandrashekhar Suman said preliminary information suggests that all three inmates are residents of Dhanbad. However, he added that details regarding their identities and whether they were convicts or undertrials are yet to be ascertained.

The incident has raised fresh questions about prison security, as the Hazaribag Central Jail is known for housing hardened criminals, Naxalites, and several high-profile undertrial prisoners. The jail is considered one of the most secure facilities in the state.

In recent weeks, security at the jail had been further tightened. The Inspector General of Prisons had suspended 12 security personnel to strengthen vigilance, following which security protocols were reportedly reinforced. Despite these measures, the disappearance of three inmates has put the jail administration under renewed scrutiny.

The prison is protected by a five-layer security system, requiring thorough checks for anyone entering or exiting the premises. The jail also holds historical significance, as veteran freedom fighter Jayaprakash Narayan had famously escaped from the same prison during the freedom movement.

An inquiry has been initiated to determine how the inmates went missing and whether there was any lapse in security.

Mazagon Dock OFS, rising dividends underscore DIPAM’s market-driven strategy in 2025

The Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) continued to play a key role in strengthening public finances and enhancing value creation in Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) during 2025 through higher dividend receipts, successful market-based disinvestment and focused capacity building initiatives.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

The Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) continued to play a key role in strengthening public finances and enhancing value creation in Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) during 2025 through higher dividend receipts, successful market-based disinvestment and focused capacity building initiatives.

Despite progressive dilution of the Government’s shareholding in CPSEs through disinvestment, dividend payouts have shown a steady increase since FY 2020–21. The rise has been attributed to improved capital management practices, stronger accountability mechanisms and calibrated spacing of disinvestment transactions, as per the Year-Ender note shared by the Ministry of Finance.

Dividends from CPSEs remain an important source of non-tax revenue for the Centre. Dividend payouts are deliberated through an inter-ministerial forum, the Committee for Monitoring of Capital Management and Dividends by CPSEs (CMCDC).

Over the past five years, dividend receipts have consistently exceeded the Revised Estimates (RE), reflecting improved financial performance of CPSEs.

According to data released by the Ministry of Finance, dividend receipts rose from Rs 39,750 crore in 2020–21 against an RE of Rs 34,717 crore to Rs 74,017 crore in 2024–25, surpassing the revised estimate of Rs 55,000 crore. The trend underscores significant improvement in dividend performance across CPSEs.

In 2025, DIPAM also leveraged market mechanisms for value creation through the Offer for Sale (OFS) route. A 3.61 per cent stake in Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) was divested from the government’s holding of 84.83 per cent. The OFS was launched on April 4, 2025, for non-retail investors and on April 7, 2025, for retail investors.

Following oversubscription, a green shoe option was exercised in the non-retail category, enabling the Government to realise Rs 3,673.42 crore. Post-OFS, MDL’s stock price witnessed an upward trend, contributing to capital gains for investors.

As part of its broader value creation agenda, DIPAM also focused on leadership and capacity building within CPSEs. In collaboration with the Capacity Building Commission (CBC), it organised a workshop on enhancing leadership communication skills in New Delhi on January 17, 2025.

The programme targeted CPSE executives working in finance, business development, strategy, and communications, with an emphasis on improving engagement with investors and financial analysts.

Additionally, DIPAM conducted a capacity building programme on the basics of financial markets in association with the National Stock Exchange (NSE) on August 29, 2025, at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, for officers and employees.

Through higher dividend mobilisation, successful disinvestment initiatives, and targeted capacity building, DIPAM’s efforts in 2025 contributed to fiscal consolidation, strengthened investor confidence, and advanced long-term value creation in CPSEs.

Ladakh’s rare double-humped camels, Zanskar ponies to debut at New Delhi Republic Day Parade

In a proud moment for Ladakh, the critically endangered double-humped camels (Bactrian Camel) of the cold desert region of Ladakh will make a historic appearance at the upcoming Republic Day Parade in New Delhi, drawing attention to their conservation and cultural significance.

Statesman News Service | Jammu |

In a proud moment for Ladakh, the critically endangered double-humped camels (Bactrian Camel) of the cold desert region of Ladakh will make a historic appearance at the upcoming Republic Day Parade in New Delhi, drawing attention to their conservation and cultural significance.

Adding to the uniqueness of the contingent, the “At Risk” breed of the Zanskar Pony will also participate as part of the Remount & Veterinary Corps (RVC) of the Indian Army, celebrating both tradition and preservation.

The contingent will feature two Bactrian camels and four Zanskar ponies. Together, they represent a blend of tradition, innovation and self-reliance in the Indian Army’s operational ecosystem.

Leading the column will be the hardy Bactrian camels, recently inducted for operations in the cold deserts of Ladakh. Perfectly adapted to extreme cold, thin air and altitudes above 15,000 feet, these camels can carry loads of up to 250 kilograms and traverse long distances with minimal water and feed. Their induction has significantly enhanced logistical support and mounted patrolling capability along the Line of Actual Control in sandy terrain and steep gradients.

Marching alongside will be the Zanskar ponies, a rare and indigenous mountain breed from Ladakh.
Despite their small stature, these ponies are renowned for extraordinary endurance, carrying 40 to 60 kilograms over long distances at altitudes exceeding 15,000 feet and in temperatures dropping to minus 40 degrees Celsius.

Since their induction in 2020, they have served in some of the harshest terrains, including the Siachen Glacier.
Beyond logistics, Zanskar ponies play a key role in mounted patrols, sometimes covering up to 70 kilometres in a single day, standing shoulder to shoulder with soldiers in high-risk areas.

As the animal contingent marches past the saluting dais on Republic Day 2026, it will serve as a poignant reminder that India’s defence strength is not built by machines and soldiers alone. From the icy heights of Siachen to the cold deserts of Ladakh and disaster-hit civilian areas, these animals have quietly shared the burden of duty, courage and sacrifice.

They march not just as support elements, but as warriors on four legs, living symbols of resilience, loyalty and the Indian Army’s unwavering resolve to protect the nation under all conditions.

Govt rolls out Market Access Support to boost global footprint of exporters

The Government of India on Wednesday launched the Market Access Support (MAS) Intervention under the Export Promotion Mission (EPM), a flagship initiative approved by the Union Cabinet on November 12, 2025.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

The Government of India on Wednesday launched the Market Access Support (MAS) Intervention under the Export Promotion Mission (EPM), a flagship initiative approved by the Union Cabinet on November 12, 2025. The initiative aims to strengthen international market access for Indian exporters, particularly MSMEs and first-time exporters.

The MAS Intervention is being implemented under the NIRYAT DISHA sub-scheme of EPM and focuses on improving buyer connect and enhancing India’s footprint in global markets through structured, outcome-oriented market access initiatives, as per the statement released by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry.

The Export Promotion Mission is jointly implemented by the Department of Commerce, the Ministry of MSME, and the Ministry of Finance, in coordination with Indian Missions abroad, Export Promotion Councils (EPCs), Commodity Boards, and industry associations.

Under the MAS framework, financial and institutional support will be provided for activities such as Buyer-Seller Meets (BSMs), participation in international trade fairs and exhibitions, Mega Reverse Buyer-Seller Meets (RBSMs) organised in India, and trade delegations to priority and emerging export markets.

To ensure predictability and continuity, a three-to-five-year calendar of major market access events will be prepared and approved in advance. At least 35 per cent participation of MSMEs has been mandated for supported events, with special emphasis on new geographies and smaller markets to promote export diversification. Delegation size has been benchmarked at a minimum of 50 participants, with flexibility based on strategic and market considerations.

Financial support ceilings and cost-sharing ratios at the event level have been rationalised, with preferential support for priority sectors and markets. Small exporters with an export turnover of up to Rs 75 lakh in the previous year will receive partial airfare support to encourage participation by new and small exporters.

All processes, including event listing, proposal submission, approvals, participant onboarding, fund disbursal, and monitoring, will be digitised through the trade.gov.in portal to ensure transparency and ease of access.

Mandatory online feedback mechanisms will be introduced for exporters participating in supported events, covering buyer quality, business leads generated, and market relevance. Based on feedback and implementation outcomes, the MAS guidelines will be refined and institutionalised over time.

The government will also shortly notify a new component for Proofs-of-Concept and Product Demonstrations aimed at overseas buyers, particularly in technology-intensive, emerging, and sunrise sectors. Additional digital tools for lead tracking, exporter follow-up, and market intelligence integration will be rolled out in phases.

With the launch of the Market Access Support Intervention, the government aims to provide Indian exporters with predictable market-entry pathways, stronger buyer engagement, and data-driven policy support, enabling deeper integration into global value chains and sustained export growth.

PM Modi lauds Arjun Erigaisi as he joins Viswanathan Anand in elite list with World Blitz bronze

With podium finishes in both the rapid and blitz formats, Arjun Erigaisi achieved a rare feat, becoming only the second Indian male player after Viswanathan Anand to medal in the open category of both events.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi secured the bronze medal at the FIDE World Blitz Championship in Doha on Tuesday, drawing praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his remarkable achievement.

Congratulating the 22-year-old, PM Modi took to X and wrote:

“India’s strides in chess continue! Congratulations to Arjun Erigaisi for winning the bronze at the FIDE World Blitz Chess Championship in Doha, following his bronze medal at the FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship recently. His skills, patience, and passion are exemplary. His successes will continue to inspire our youth. My best wishes to him.”

Erigaisi had earlier clinched a bronze medal at the 2025 FIDE World Rapid Championship, making it a memorable outing in Doha. With podium finishes in both the rapid and blitz formats, he achieved a rare feat, becoming only the second Indian male player after Viswanathan Anand to medal in the open category of both events.

His campaign at the World Blitz Championship ended in the semi-finals, where he lost 0.5-2.5 to Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Abdusattorov, despite a dominant league-stage performance. Erigaisi finished the league phase with 14.5 points from 18 rounds, registering 12 wins, five draws, and just one loss, which secured him a place in the knockout stage.

Erigaisi shared the bronze medal with American Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana, who was defeated 1-3 by Magnus Carlsen in the other semi-final.

Carlsen went on to clinch his sixth World Blitz title. However, the Norwegian once again found himself in the spotlight for his animated reaction under time pressure, banging the table during his game against Erigaisi. The incident, similar to a previous outburst against D Gukesh, went viral on social media, sparking mixed reactions from fans.

In the women’s section, India’s Koneru Humpy also claimed a bronze medal at the World Rapid Championship, tying on 8.5 points with Zhu Jiner and Aleksandra Goryachkina. As per tie-break rules, Zhu and Goryachkina advanced to the playoff, where Goryachkina defeated Zhu to win the gold medal.

Both Arjun Erigaisi and Koneru Humpy received appreciation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, who lauded their dedication and contributions to Indian chess.

Politics 2025 — the year of BJP dominance, shifting Opposition fortunes

Only two Assembly elections were held during the year, but politically 2025 was an eventful year marked by intensity, strong opposition challenges, and a common theme—the continued dominance of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) that, midway, seemed to set the tone of the rest of India’s electoral cycle till the General Elections in 2029.

VIBHA SHARMA | New Delhi |

Only two Assembly elections were held during the year, but politically 2025 was an eventful year marked by intensity, strong opposition challenges, and a common theme—the continued dominance of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) that, midway, seemed to set the tone of the rest of India’s electoral cycle till the General Elections in 2029.

The two Assembly elections in Delhi and Bihar, a rather unexpected polls to choose a new Vice President of India, and a surprise saffron win in the local bodies’ elections in Kerala’s capital Thiruvananthapuram, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi described as a “watershed moment in Kerala’s politics”.

It was a year of strategic gains for the saffron side—one of the six currently recognised parties which include the Indian National Congress (INC), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M), the Communist Party of India (CPI), and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Despite tough resistance from opponents—Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi, and Congress and a strong regional ally Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in Bihar, the BJP remained a much more cohesive political force, a behemoth in Indian politics, thanks to its strategic planning, scale, influence, and dominance.

In Bihar, the BJP consolidated its position as the leading force in the NDA, weakening its rivals and becoming the most successful party in Indian politics in 2025, despite a narrower 2024 Lok Sabha victory. Despite tough geopolitical, regional and domestic challenges, Prime Minister Narendra Modi navigated the second year of his third term in politics with ease, putting to rest all speculations about strained ties with the party’s ideological fountainhead—the RSS.

Whether it was bringing the BJP back to power in Delhi after 27 years this February, winning 48 of the 70 Assembly seats and ending AAP’s decade-long rule in the capital state, or a very decisive NDA sail in Bihar, the results proved that the relationship with the Sangh was very much on track. In Delhi, the saffron vote share went up by more than eight per cent, and several senior AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, lost their constituencies.

The scenario was repeated in Bihar in November, where the BJP recorded its best-ever performance, winning 89 seats in the 243-member Assembly. Along with JD(U)’s 85 seats, the NDA landed a commanding 202 seats. Despite failing health, multiple-time Chief Minister Nitish Kumar reiterated his position in Bihar politics that it was impossible to form a government in the state without his JD(U).

Nationally, the BJP continued to leverage its Hindutva ideology, carrying forward its 2024 Lok Sabha momentum into 2025 through strategically-framed legislation like the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Bill, 2025, that replaced the UPA-era MGNREGA—a move that triggered multiple objections, including over its acronym — VB-G RAM G Bill, its ideological positioning, and the removal of Mahatma Gandhi’s name.

As part of the INDIA bloc, the Congress had doubled its Lok Sabha tally to 99 seats in the 2024 general election, signalling a revival under the new Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, but 2025 proved to be less than a mixed bag for the grand old party. Apart from electoral disappointments in Assemblies, the party continued to battle the mid-term leadership crisis between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy D K Shivakumar. The situation remains unresolved even as the year ends.

After Punjab, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka was yet another Congress-ruled state witnessing mayhem amid local rivalries, putting a question mark on what the party “High Command” was thinking. Why was it letting the issue fester in a key state, among the only three under the Congress rule, along with Telangana and Himachal Pradesh? Facing strained ties with an important constituent of the INDIA bloc—the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in poll-bound West Bengal—much to its embarrassment, the Congress also battled dissenting notes from senior leaders like Shashi Tharoor and Digvijaya Singh.

The Congress tried to capitalise on anti-incumbency sentiments and sharpened its narrative around the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in 2025, but its allegations of “vote chori” failed to deliver a decisive counter to the BJP in Bihar. Rahul Gandhi’s protests, accusing the ECI of “vote chori” (vote theft) to benefit the BJP, failed to impress voters. Meanwhile, now there is this buzz of a bigger and better role for Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is emerging as a more “approachable, affable, and effective” person than her brother.

In Maharashtra, the coming together of Thackeray cousins—Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray—ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections left the Maha Vikas Aghadi fractured, and the remaining two MVA constituents—the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Sharad Pawar (SP) faction and the Congress—were left to fight out against each other in the polls to the richest civic body.

The year also surprised with a rare Constitutional moment—the vice-presidential election in September following the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on health grounds. NDA nominee C P Radhakrishnan, a former Maharashtra Governor and RSS veteran, sailed through with 452 first-preference votes against opposition candidate Justice B Sudershan Reddy, who got 300 votes.

The only saving grace for BJP’s rivals—the 152-vote margin—was the narrowest in a vice-presidential election since 2002.

Faridabad: Woman gang-raped for 2 hours in moving van after being offered lift; assaulted and thrown on road

A 25-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped for nearly two hours inside a moving vehicle by two men in Haryana’s Faridabad.

A 25-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped for nearly two hours inside a moving vehicle after being offered a lift by two men in Haryana’s Faridabad. The incident took place on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.

Police have arrested two men in connection with the case, officials confirmed today.

Details of the incident

According to officials, the woman was waiting for a ride to return home around midnight when a van stopped and two men offered to drop her. Trusting them, she accepted the lift. However, instead of taking her home, the accused diverted the vehicle towards the Faridabad-Gurugram Road.

When the woman objected, she was allegedly assaulted. Police said one of the accused continued driving while the other raped her as the vehicle moved along the Faridabad-Gurugram stretch for nearly two hours. Around 3 am, the accused reportedly threw the woman out of the moving van near SGM Nagar and fled the spot.

The victim sustained injuries to her face and head and was rushed to a hospital in an injured condition. She was initially admitted to the Civil Hospital in Faridabad and later referred to AIIMS Delhi due to the seriousness of her injuries. Currently, she is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Faridabad.

Probe underway

Faridabad Police PRO Sub-Inspector Yashpal Singh said that a case was registered at Kotwali Police Station on December 30 following a complaint filed by the victim’s family. “The Crime Branch team acted promptly, arrested both the accused, and recovered the vehicle. Further questioning of the suspects is underway,” he said.

In the complaint, the victim’s sister said she received a call from the woman around 8.30 pm, during which she mentioned having an argument with her mother and going to a friend’s house, from where she expected to return within three hours.

As part of the investigation, the CCTV footage from the area was examined by the police, which led to the arrest of both accused. The suspects, who are reportedly natives of Madhya Pradesh, were living in Faridabad.

Further investigation is underway.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

At least eight people have lost their lives and more than 100 people have fallen ill after drinking contaminated water supplied by the municipality in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore. The incident has been reported from Bhagirathpura area of the city.

Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav put the death toll at seven and said municipal officials are going door-to-door to ensure proper care for the affected people.

Some reports said quoting local residents and other officials that the number of dead has risen to eight.

“The health department has officially confirmed the deaths of three people. However, according to my information, the total number of deaths due to illness is seven. 36 people have been discharged. More than 116 people are reported to be ill,” Bhargav said.

“The Indore Municipal Corporation’s health department is constantly working with the people to resolve their problems. We are all deeply saddened by this unfortunate situation. The entire municipal corporation is reaching out to people in all areas and ensuring that they receive proper care in hospitals,” Bhargav told news agency ANI.

According to the Mayor, the Chief Minister has announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased, while all those ill will be provided free treatment.

What really happened, what action has been taken

As per the details available, a large number of people fell ill in Bhagirathpura area over the last few days after drinking contaminated water.

Most of them were admitted to different hospitals in the city. By Tuesday, three of the affected people had died. However, the number rose sharply to eight on Wednesday as per an official quoted by news agency IANS.

It has been reported that residents of the area had complained about unusual taste and smell in the municipal water supply which they received on December 25.

The incident has triggered serious concerns about the safety of drinking water in Indore, with Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav ordering swift action in the case.

Two municipal officials have been suspended and one public health engineer has been sacked over negligence in performing their duties.

“Bhagirathpura incident in Indore is tragic. Zonal officer Saligram Sitole and Assistant Engineer Yogesh Joshi were suspended. Superintendent Engineer of PHE Shubham Srivastava has been removed from his service with immediate effect,” CM Yadav stated in a statement issued late on Tuesday.

Congress leader alleges poisoning of water supply

The Opposition Congress in the state has slammed the state government and authorities over the tragedy.

Indore district Congress unit is reported to be mulling filing of an FIR against the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) and its Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav.

Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari, who met the affected people at some hospitals on Tuesday evening, blamed the Indore Municipal Commissioner for the tragedy and alleged poisoning of the water supply.

“This is a complete failure of the Municipal Corporation. If drainage water mixes with drinking water pipelines, people can suffer from vomiting, diarrhoea, and jaundice, but they do not die from it. It appears that some kind of poisonous substance had mixed into the drinking water pipeline, and this needs to be investigated,” Patwari said.
