South Africa vs Canada, T20 WC: Aiden Markram leads South Africa to 57-run win over Canada in opener

Canada won the toss and elected to field first, opting to take advantage of the expected dew in the second innings at the Ahmedabad venue.

Neha Buswal | New Delhi |

South Africa, the 2024 runners-up, underlined their favourites tag with a dominant batting display against Canada in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

After being put in to bat, the Proteas piled up a formidable 213/4 in their 20 overs, powered by a captain’s knock from Aiden Markram and a brutal late surge from David Miller and Tristan Stubbs.

Openers Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock set the tone early, taking the attack to the Canadian bowlers and racing to 66 without loss in the powerplay. De Kock looked fluent during his 25 off 22 balls before Dilpreet Bajwa provided the breakthrough, but Markram continued to dominate and brought up a 28-ball half-century, keeping the scoring rate high through the middle overs.

Ryan Rickelton provided solid support at the other end as the duo took South Africa past the 100-run mark inside 10 overs. Canada fought back through Ansh Patel, who struck twice in quick succession to dismiss Markram for 59 off 32 balls and Rickelton for 33 off 21, briefly pulling the momentum back.

However, the Proteas finished strongly, with David Miller and Tristan Stubbs launching a late assault to push South Africa beyond the 200-run mark. Miller remained unbeaten on 39 off 23 balls, while Stubbs chipped in with a rapid 34 off 19, ensuring a daunting target for Canada. Ansh Patel was the standout bowler for Canada, returning figures of 3/31 in his four overs.

In response, Canada struggled against South Africa’s pace attack and were restricted to 156/8 in their 20 overs, despite a fighting 64 off 45 balls from Navneet Dhaliwal. Lungi Ngidi starred with the ball for the Proteas, claiming four wickets to dismantle Canada’s top and middle order, while a double strike from Marco Jansen in the 18th over effectively ended the chase.

South Africa eventually sealed a comprehensive 57-run victory in their opening Group D match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

T20 World Cup, South Africa vs Canada: Toss Update

Canada won the toss and elected to field first, opting to take advantage of the expected dew in the second innings at the Ahmedabad venue.

Captains take after the toss

Canada captain Dilpreet Bajwa said:

“We will bowl first. The boys are excited rather than anxious. We’re playing against South Africa, who were runners-up in the last World Cup, so it’s a big challenge. Everyone is very happy to play at this stadium and is really looking forward to a night game. It looks like a very good batting track. However, because of the conditions and the possibility of dew later on, we decided to bowl first. Let’s see how it plays out. Our preparation has been good. Because of the weather back home in Canada, we couldn’t get enough cricket there, but thanks to our board, we had a pre-tour in Sri Lanka. We played some very good practice matches there, including against Sri Lanka A, which helped us a lot going into the World Cup.

“We’ve gone with a balanced attack – three fast bowlers and spin options. The seamers are Kaleem Sana and Dilon Heyliger, and in spin, we have Saad Bin Zafar as a left-arm spinner, Ansh Patel as a wrist-spinner, and myself. It’s a great experience for our players. Many of them have already played in the GT20 league, where they got the chance to rub shoulders with big international players. But the World Cup is a much bigger stage, and it’s a great opportunity for them to showcase their talent to the world.”

South Africa captain Aiden Markram said:

“Looks a pretty good surface. Hopefully, we can get to a good start with the bat, get to a good score and continue with that momentum with the ball in hand. We have been blessed with the draw, I suppose. Looking forward to it. the wicket looks good. A fantastic stadium to play in. Looking to get to a good start in Ahmedabad and run away with it.

“It is a big help. People can say whatever they want to say about white ball wickets, but they do vary from continent to continent. It does not mean that they are bad wickets. They are good wickets, but they can be different. We are fortunate that we have played quite a lot of a cricket in the subcontinent in the recent times.

“That is the long term goal. But first we have to earn the right to play in the Super 8s and then the knockouts. But having a good group phase is where the focus is now. Tristan Stubbs plays at no. 6, that was one of the question marks. 4 seamers — Lungi (Ngidi), KG (Rabada), Corbin Bosch and Marco (Jansen) and Kesh (Keshav Maharaj) as the spinner.”

Jharkhand MP seeks cultural corridor linking tribal heritage sites

Deepak Prakash raised the issue of tribal identity and heritage in the Rajya Sabha, urging the Centre to develop a dedicated Adivasi Cultural Corridor to preserve and promote the legacy of the Urav and Santhal communities of Jharkhand and adjoining regions.

Statesman News Service | Ranchi |

Deepak Prakash raised the issue of tribal identity and heritage in the Rajya Sabha, urging the Centre to develop a dedicated Adivasi Cultural Corridor to preserve and promote the legacy of the Urav and Santhal communities of Jharkhand and adjoining regions.

Speaking in the Upper House, the BJP MP said the Urav and Santhal tribes possess one of the most ancient living cultures in the country and that their historical and spiritual sites deserve structured protection and national recognition. He proposed the development of a “distinct cultural corridor” linking key heritage locations spread across Jharkhand and Bihar.

Referring to Rohtasgarh, Mudma, and Marang Buru, Prakash said these sites together represent the civilisational memory, faith systems, and traditional governance structures of tribal society. Rohtasgarh in Bihar, he said, symbolises the valour of the Urav community and preserves the memories of their ancestors.

Mudma, located in Mandar block near Ranchi, he noted, is not only a sacred religious site but also the birthplace of the traditional Padha system of tribal self-governance, which has sustained indigenous society for centuries.

He described Marang Buru, located in the Parasnath region, as the supreme deity of the Santhal community, stating that it is not merely a mountain but a core symbol of Santhal identity and existence.

To underline the cultural significance of these locations, the MP recited poetic lines in the House highlighting ancestral faith and heritage. He stressed that protection of tribal communities is inseparable from preservation of their cultural and historical legacy.

Prakash also expressed concern that several sites of global cultural importance continue to lack basic infrastructure such as roads, electricity, and drinking water. He urged the government to adopt a holistic approach by developing the proposed corridor with essential amenities and conservation measures.

He said the proposed cultural corridor linking Mudma, Marang Buru, and Rohtasgarh would help familiarise the country and the world with India’s indigenous civilisation, culture, and tribal history.

Acharya Balkrishna shares a simple Ayurvedic trick for headaches using just cloves, cardamom, and ginger. Brew it, sip it slowly, and feel the pain melt away naturally.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Forget complicated treatments or expensive medications. Sometimes, nature’s pantry has all you need.

The simple recipe

According to Balkrishna, you only need three ingredients from your kitchen. Grab two to three cloves, two small cardamom pods, and a tiny piece of fresh ginger.

Why it works

Ayurveda has long believed that certain spices have cooling and pain-relieving properties. Cloves are popular for their analgesic qualities. That may help reduce intensity of pain.

Cardamom acts as a natural anti-inflammatory and can calm nervous system. Ginger of course is classic remedy that improves circulation and soothes discomfort.

Combined they create potent little brew that can tackle mild headaches without chemicals.

Balkrishna suggests sipping this concoction slowly, a little at a time, to get the best results. It’s particularly helpful for tension headaches. Now forget those annoying pains that creep up after long hours at work, staring at screens or stressing over deadlines.

While it’s not replacement for professional medical advice in severe or chronic cases, it’s gentle. And, it is home-based way to relieve everyday headaches.

10 of 40 days given to CM have passed, no proof received: Shankaracharya

Jyotishpeethadhishwar Shankaracharya Swami Shri Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati on Monday once again demanded from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath proof of being a Hindu.

Statesman News Service | Varanasi |

Jyotishpeethadhishwar Shankaracharya Swami Shri Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati on Monday once again demanded from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath proof of being a Hindu.

He said he had given the Chief Minister 40 days to completely stop cow slaughter and declare the cow as the state mother. Ten days have passed, but there has been no response.

The Shankaracharya said, “Everyone knows that during the last Magh Mela, the state government demanded the proof of my being a Shankaracharya within just 24 hours, which we provided within the stipulated time. After that, we generously gave the Chief Minister 40 days to provide proof of his being a true Hindu. Ten days have passed, but in these ten days, neither Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath nor the state government has presented any proof of being Hindu.”

He further said that in these ten days, the government took the first step by giving its Animal Husbandry Minister an article to read, which he read aloud with great enthusiasm. After that, he said that they do not consider him a ‘Shankaracharya’.

The Shankaracharya reacted strongly to this, saying: Firstly, the recognition or non-recognition of the Uttar Pradesh government is irrelevant for being a Shankaracharya, as this government came into existence thousands of years after the establishment of the Peeth (monastery).

Secondly, only someone who is not a Hindu himself would not recognize a Shankaracharya.

Thirdly, anyone who calls himself a Hindu but does not recognize the Shankaracharya, proves himself to be a fake Hindu.

Fourthly, governments should not forget that Adi Shankaracharya clearly stated in the Mathamnaya Mahanushasan that Dharma (righteousness) is the foundation of human beings and it depends on the Acharya (spiritual teacher).

KL Rahul’s century powers Karnataka into Ranji Trophy semis

KL Rahul rolled back the years with a masterful fourth-innings century as Karnataka pulled off a memorable four-wicket win over 42-time champions Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy 2025–26 quarter-final at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy, BKC, on Monday.

Statesman News Service | Mumbai |

KL Rahul rolled back the years with a masterful fourth-innings century as Karnataka pulled off a memorable four-wicket win over 42-time champions Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy 2025–26 quarter-final at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy, BKC, on Monday.

Set a daunting target of 325 against a seasoned Mumbai attack, Karnataka were jolted early when skipper Mayank Agarwal was dismissed in just the second over by skipper Shardul Thakur. From there, Rahul took control of the chase, displaying composure and authority in equal measure.

Devdutt Padikkal, continuing his rich vein of form, provided early stability and combined with Rahul in an 84-run stand for the second wicket. Padikkal’s resistance ended in the 20th over when he was trapped by Tanush Kotiyan, but Rahul remained unflustered, calmly rotating the strike and punishing loose deliveries.

Karun Nair briefly joined Rahul and added 23 before falling in the 31st over, but any hopes of a Mumbai comeback were extinguished when Rahul found a dependable partner in youngster Smaran Ravichandran. The pair stitched together a match-defining 147-run partnership that swung the contest decisively in Karnataka’s favour.

Rahul brought up his 24th first-class hundred off 147 balls as Karnataka cruised to 265 for three by lunch on the final day. His outstanding innings finally ended early in the afternoon session when Tushar Deshpande broke through, dismissing the right-hander for a superb 130 off 182 balls, laced with 14 fours and a six.

Smaran, already a proven run-scorer at the domestic level, showed maturity beyond his years to anchor the chase after Rahul’s departure. He remained unbeaten on 83 as Vidyadhar Patil struck the winning runs in the 74th over, sealing Karnataka’s place in the semi-finals.

Earlier in the match, Karnataka had seized control on the opening day after bundling Mumbai out for 120, with Prasidh Krishna and Vidweth Kaverappa leading a disciplined bowling effort. The eight-time champions then secured a slender first-innings lead of 53, posting 173 in reply, largely thanks to Mayank Agarwal’s fluent 92.

Mumbai mounted a strong fightback in their second innings, piling up 377 to set up an intriguing finale. Akash Anand top-scored with 70, while Musheer Khan’s 49 provided crucial support as the former champions set Karnataka a stiff fourth-innings challenge.

With the victory, Karnataka advanced to the Ranji Trophy semi-finals, where they will face first-time semifinalists Uttarakhand, keeping their quest for a ninth title firmly on track.

Haryana emerges as sporting powerhouse, ₹24 crore awarded to National Games medalists: CM

Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Monday said that Haryana has firmly established itself as a powerhouse of sports, producing not only crops but also champions.

Statesman News Service | Chandigarh |

Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Monday said that Haryana has firmly established itself as a powerhouse of sports, producing not only crops but also champions. The state is no longer known solely as the land of farmers and soldiers, it has earned a distinct national identity as a land of sports.

From the National Games to the Olympics, the state’s strong presence is being felt across the sporting landscape. The government’s resolve, he said, is to ensure that no talented sports person is left behind due to lack of resources, he added.

The Chief Minister was addressing a large gathering at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Gurugram, after inaugurating the Chief Minister’s Cup and distributing awards to medal winners of the 38th National Games. On the occasion, he disbursed prize money worth approximately ₹24 crore to 417 medal winners and participating players of the National Games and also honoured Padma Shri awardee and Indian women’s hockey team goalkeeper Savita Punia.

He described the event as a celebration of Haryana’s sporting talent, discipline, hard work and determination, adding that the sacred land of Gurugram was witnessing two major sporting celebrations simultaneously. Industries and Commerce Minister Rao Narbir Singh, Pataudi MLA Bimla Chaudhary, Additional Chief Secretary (Sports) Vijay Singh Dahiya, Sports Director Parth Gupta and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

Saini said that sports platforms give wings to the dreams of the youth and athletes carry the resolve to take the nation’s pride to new heights. He noted that Haryana’s players delivered an outstanding performance in the 38th National Games held in Uttarakhand. A total of 689 players from the state participated in 33 sports disciplines and won 153 medals, including 48 gold, 47 silver and 58 bronze medals, reflecting years of dedication, sacrifice and perseverance.

He said sportspersons are a source of inspiration for society. Under the state government’s incentive policy, gold medal winners of the National Games are being awarded ₹7 lakh, silver medal winners ₹5 lakh and bronze medal winners ₹3 lakh, while all participants are being given ₹51,000 each as encouragement. The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to parents and coaches whose guidance and motivation enabled athletes to bring laurels to the state and the nation.

Encouraging participants of the Chief Minister’s Cup, he said around 3,600 players are taking part in six sports disciplines in the three-day competition. Cash prizes of ₹1 lakh for gold, ₹70,000 for silver and ₹50,000 for bronze winners will be awarded. He said the CM Cup reflects the government’s vision of identifying and nurturing sporting talent from every village and city. Wrestlers, boxers, athletes, shooters and hockey players from Haryana continue to make the country proud, he added.

The Chief Minister further said that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, initiatives such as Khelo India and Fit India have given a new direction to the sports culture in the country. Sports are no longer just a competition but have become a powerful medium of nation-building. He advised athletes to uphold discipline, humility and patriotism, to remain undeterred by defeat and grounded in victory.

The Chief Minister said that sports infrastructure is being expanded continuously across the state. A Sports University has been established at Rai in Sonipat district. At present, Haryana has three state-level sports complexes, 21 district stadiums, 25 sub-division stadiums, 163 Rajiv Gandhi Rural Sports Complexes, 245 rural stadiums and 382 indoor gyms in villages. In addition, 10 swimming pools, 11 synthetic athletics tracks, 14 hockey astro turfs, two synthetic football fields and nine multipurpose halls have been developed. Facilitation centres have also been set up in 16 districts at a cost of ₹3 crore.

He said sports equipment is being provided under the Haryana Sports Equipment Provision Scheme, benefiting 15,634 players so far. Currently, 1,472 sports nurseries are operational across the state, where over 37,000 children receive regular training. Financial assistance of ₹1,500 per month is being given to players aged 8–14 years and ₹2,000 per month to those aged 15–19 years.

To ensure secure futures for athletes, the Haryana Outstanding Sportsperson Service Rules, 2021, have been implemented. Under these rules, 550 new posts have been created in the Sports Department and 231 sportspersons have been provided government jobs. A rehabilitation centre has also been started at the Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex, Panchkula.

Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Gaurav Gautam said that the day would be etched in golden letters in the country’s sports history, as hundreds of players were honoured on a single platform. Of the 689 Haryana players who participated in the 38th National Games, 153 won medals, enhancing the pride of both the state and the nation.

Referring to Mission Olympics 2036, the Sports Minister said that the combined efforts of the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister are shaping Haryana into a global sporting power. Through initiatives such as Khelo India, TOPS, CM Cup, sports nurseries, academies and Mission Olympics 2036 ‘Vijayi Bhav’, athletes are being provided with robust and sustainable platforms.

Jana Nayagan row: Producers withdraw court case, CBFC revising committee now to decide film certification

After months of legal drama, Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’ producers have withdrawn their court case. The film now moves back to the CBFC revising committee for certification, bringing fans a step closer to its release.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

The legal saga around actor Thalapathy Vijay’s much-anticipated film ‘Jana Nayagan’ has finally taken surprising twist. After weeks of courtroom drama and censorship debates, the makers have decided to step back from the legal battlefield and let the official film certification process take the lead.

Fans and film buffs alike are now waiting to see when the star-studded entertainer will finally hit the screens.

Court case on the brink of closure?

On February 10, 2026, the Madras High Court is set to mark a key moment in the ‘Jana Nayagan’ controversy. The writ petition filed by producers against Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is now listed under heading “for withdrawal” before Justice PT Asha.

According to ‘The Hindu’, the production team has formally told the court registry that they no longer wish to continue the legal fight.

Vijayan Subramanian, the lawyer representing the production house, confirmed that the producers have decided not to seek urgent certification or push for court orders anymore. Instead, the team will follow the CBFC’s official procedures, meaning the revising committee now has the green light to review the film without any legal interruptions.

Producer steps back: A strategic move

The withdrawal is being seen as smart move to break deadlock that has delayed the film’s release. By pulling out of court, producers have essentially frozen the legal process. This signals their intent to cooperate with the CBFC and move closer to the long-awaited release date.

A formal letter submitted to the High Court registry spelled out this decision, giving the revising committee a clear path to examine the film thoroughly.

Industry insiders note that this step could finally allow ‘Jana Nayagan’ to leave the months-long controversy behind and focus on what matters most: getting into theaters and onto streaming platforms.

How the ‘Jana Nayagan’ censor row began

The journey to this point has been rocky. ‘Jana Nayagan’ was originally ready for a January 9, 2026 release. CBFC first reviewed the film on December 19, 2025. Then it suggested U/A 16+ rating along with few cuts.

The producers agreed and made necessary edits resubmitting film for approval.

But trouble brewed when a CBFC board member raised concerns about certain procedural issues, references to the army, sensitive religious mentions in the film.

This led the CBFC to put certification on hold and refer movie to revising committee. This move escalated tensions between the filmmakers and the board.

Legal detour to nowhere

Before the CBFC’s official decision was even online, the producers approached the Madras High Court asking for urgent certification within 24 hours. The court listened, reviewed the records submitted by the CBFC, and the matter was under scrutiny. Now with the withdrawal notice filed, court route has officially closed. Film’s fate rests entirely with revising committee.

For fans, this means the next major update on ‘Jana Nayagan’ will likely come from CBFC itself rather than legal headlines.

UP Governor’s address appears more like a celebration of false praises for a govt steeped in corruption: Akhilesh

Samajwadi Party National President Akhilesh Yadav said that the Uttar Pradesh Governor’s address, made in the joint session of the state legislature on, appears more like a celebration of false praises for a government steeped in corruption.

Statesman News Service | Lucknow |

Samajwadi Party National President Akhilesh Yadav said that the Uttar Pradesh Governor’s address, made in the joint session of the state legislature on, appears more like a celebration of false praises for a government steeped in corruption.

The public will not be misled by the government’s attempts to create a false sense of progress on paper. The BJP government has only worked to betray the trust of the people of the state and harm mutual harmony, he alleged.

Yadav said under the BJP rule, the progress of the state has been stalled. The metro, which had progressed significantly under the Samajwadi government, has not moved an inch further. No express highway has been built to match the Agra-Lucknow Expressway.

“There is anarchy and disorder everywhere. Farmers are in distress. Young people are suffering from unemployment. There are no jobs, industries are closing down in the state, and only grand events are being held in the name of capital investment. No investment is visible on the ground,” he alleged.

The SP president, in a statement here, said that the Governor’s address is merely a display of statistics and empty rhetoric. While the address contains many claims, the ground reality is that even 50 per cent of the funds have not been spent in many departments. There is no water in the toilets. In some places, only the structures for taps have been erected under the tap water scheme, and in other places, no water is available. The products of small and medium-sized industries are not selling. Due to the lack of expensive raw materials, these industries are also shutting down. Industries are facing a crisis due to the power shortage and the deteriorating law and order situation.

Yadav further said that the people of the state have clearly understood the BJP’s lies, corruption, and dishonesty. The people, suffering from inflation, unemployment, and corruption, are now determined to remove the BJP government in the 2027 assembly elections, only then will Uttar Pradesh be freed from the looming crisis.

Tension in Nadia as TMC MLA accused of assaulting students

The incident happened at Murutia police station area in Nadia’s Karimpur when ruling party MLA Bimalendu Singh Roy allegedly assaulted a group of Higher Secondary students returning home on bicycles.

Statesman News Service | Kolkata |

A day after the Trinamul Congress suspended a local councillor allegedly for kicking an octogenarian to death, the high-handedness of another ruling party leader came to the fore when a TMC MLA was accused of assaulting Higher Secondary students who were returning home on bicycles, triggering tension in Nadia district on Sunday evening.

The incident happened at Murutia police station area in Nadia’s Karimpur when ruling party MLA Bimalendu Singh Roy allegedly assaulted a group of Higher Secondary students returning home on bicycles.

According to local sources, the incident took place at Baliadanga in Murutia when several Class XII students were cycling back after tuition classes.

The MLA’s vehicle was reportedly behind the students. Even after repeated honking, the cyclists allegedly did not move aside.

Locals and guardians claimed the road was narrow, leaving the students with little room to give way.

It is alleged that the MLA got down from his car, argued with the students and slapped a few of them.

As news of the incident spread, residents gathered and questioned how a public representative could allegedly manhandle students over such a minor issue.

Villagers demanded an apology from the MLA and staged a brief protest outside his residence.

Murutia police reached the spot and the agitation was withdrawn after assurances from the police.

However, the Karimpur MLA denied the allegations of assault.

“I did not hit anyone. I was only speaking to the students. At that time, some BJP leaders arrived and tried to harass me. This is a conspiracy to defame me,” Roy claimed.

The BJP, in turn, alleged that the MLA was dragging politics into the issue to cover up his own actions. With allegations and counter-allegations flying, political tensions in the area remain high.

Nitin Nabin begins maiden visit to Bihar as BJP chief, recalls struggles during ‘Jungle Raj’

On his first visit to Bihar as the National President of the BJP, Nitin Nabin launched a scathing attack on Opposition parties, hinting at the RJD and the Congress for focusing on the progress of their families instead of serving the nation.

Imran Mojib | Patna |

On his first visit to Bihar as the National President of the BJP, Nitin Nabin launched a scathing attack on Opposition parties, hinting at the RJD and the Congress for focusing on the progress of their families instead of serving the nation.

“Parties that begin with themselves and end with themselves cannot ensure a bright future for Bihar or for the country,” he said.

Speaking at a welcome ceremony organised by the party on Monday in Patna, Nitin Nabin said that Bihar will play an important role in making India a developed nation by 2047. He called upon party workers to remain united and work with team spirit to secure a bright future for the state.

Recalling the struggles of senior BJP leaders, he said the party has emerged as a major force today because of their sacrifices.

“During the era of ‘jungle raj,’ it was difficult for BJP workers even to step out of their homes to distribute pamphlets. Yet they faced those challenges to publicise the party’s ideology, and it is because of their sacrifices that the party has moved forward. We must further strengthen the party by strengthening its ideology,” he said.

On the occasion, he also recalled the BJP’s ideological foundations, stating that Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee gave the inspiration of nationalism, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya presented the concept of ‘Antyodaya’, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee gave the mantra of good governance. He said BJP governments today are guided by the ideas of all three great leaders.

The BJP President said, “From the soil of Bihar, I express my gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the trust he has placed in me. I will strive to carry that trust forward.”

Addressing party workers, he said, “I have worked for a long time with the Yuva Morcha. I always say that politics is a long run. I repeat this again today. If we want to realise PM Modi’s dream and build the India envisioned by him, all of us must put in sincere effort during our time.”

Upon arrival in Patna, he was received by BJP State President Sanjay Saraogi and Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha. Nitin Nabin visited the residence of Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan and paid floral tribute to his statue.

Manu Bhaker had to settle for silver after a dramatic finish in the women’s 25m pistol event at the Asian Rifle/Pistol Championship, New Delhi 2026, losing out to Vietnam’s Thuy Trang Nguyen after two tense shoot-offs at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range here on Tuesday.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Manu Bhaker had to settle for silver after a dramatic finish in the women’s 25m pistol event at the Asian Rifle/Pistol Championship, New Delhi 2026, losing out to Vietnam’s Thuy Trang Nguyen after two tense shoot-offs at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range here on Tuesday. Esha Singh added to India’s medal haul by claiming bronze, her second individual podium finish of the championships.

The final was a gripping affair, with Esha opening strongly by shooting a perfect five in the first series, while Manu and Nguyen managed fours. The three remained locked in a tight battle through the early stages, exchanging positions after almost every series. Nguyen briefly gained the upper hand with a flawless sixth series that gave her a two-point cushion, but Manu and Esha clawed back after the Vietnamese shooter dropped a shot in the seventh.

Esha led the field with 30 hits after eight series, only to suffer a costly slip in the ninth, where she missed all five shots, ending her gold medal hopes and leaving her to contend for bronze. In the final series, Manu scored three while Nguyen hit two, bringing both shooters level on 35 and forcing a shoot-off.

The first shoot-off saw both Manu and Nguyen register two hits apiece, extending the contest. In the second, Nguyen held her nerve as Manu missed three shots, sealing the gold for the Vietnamese shooter and leaving Manu with silver. Rhythm Sangwan, the third Indian finalist, finished just outside the medals in fourth place.

India also enjoyed success in the junior women’s 25m pistol event, where Naamya Kapoor clinched gold after another nerve-racking shoot-off. Kapoor, the youngest Indian to win a World Championship medal, was tied with Indonesia’s Rihadatul Asyifa on 29 hits at the end of regulation. In the shoot-off, Kapoor produced three hits while Asyifa missed all her shots. Anjali Bhagwat secured bronze with a score of 24, while Parisha Gupta, who had topped qualification, finished fifth.

The day ended on a high for the hosts as India swept the team golds in both the senior and junior women’s 25m pistol events, taking the overall medal tally at the championships to an impressive 60, including 37 gold, 13 silver and 10 bronze.

Ranji Trophy QF: Heartbreak at 299 as Sudip Gharami powers Bengal to dominance

Sudip Gharami fell agonisingly short of a historic triple century but not before scripting one of the great Ranji Trophy innings, as Bengal seized firm control of their 2025–26 quarter-final against Andhra at the Bengal Cricket Academy in Kalyani on Monday.

Sudip Gharami fell agonisingly short of a historic triple century but not before scripting one of the great Ranji Trophy innings, as Bengal seized firm control of their 2025–26 quarter-final against Andhra at the Bengal Cricket Academy in Kalyani on Monday.

The Bengal No.3 batted through most of the fourth day, producing a marathon knock that powered the hosts well past Andhra’s first-innings total of 295 and into an unassailable position. Gharami’s innings, built on patience and stamina, left Andhra chasing the game long before his eventual dismissal.

After bringing up his maiden double century, the 26-year-old continued to grind the bowlers down as Bengal consolidated their advantage. He forged vital century stands for the sixth and seventh wickets, the latter a 221-run partnership with wicketkeeper Shakir Gandhi that proved decisive in pushing Bengal into a dominant position.

With the innings deep into Day 4, Gharami lost Gandhi and Akash Deep in quick succession but kept inching closer to a rare milestone. The ground held its breath as he reached 299, only for Andhra leg-spinner Shaik Rasheed to cut short the vigil with a delivery that stayed low and knocked back the off stump.

Gharami’s dismissal on 299 made him the first Indian batter to fall one run short of a triple century and only the third player in the history of First-Class cricket to be dismissed on that score. His previous highest score was 186, underscoring the magnitude of the effort.

The score of 299 has long occupied a curious place in cricket history. Don Bradman famously finished unbeaten on 299 against South Africa at Adelaide in 1931-32, while Maharashtra’s S.S. Sugwekar registered an unbeaten 299 in the Ranji Trophy in 1988-89. Gharami now joins New Zealand great Martin Crowe and England’s Michael Powell as the only batters dismissed on 299 in First-Class cricket.

The 596-ball knock ranks as the sixth-longest innings by an Indian in First-Class cricket, with only five Indians having faced 600 balls or more in a single innings.

Bengal eventually closed their first innings at 629, securing a commanding lead of 334 runs. By stumps on the fourth day, Andhra had already lost three wickets in their second innings and trailed by 270 runs, leaving Bengal firmly on course for a semi-final berth against first-time qualifiers Jammu & Kashmir.

J&K stun MP to make it to last four

Jammu & Kashmir created history on Monday by reaching their maiden Ranji Trophy semi-final, defeating 2021–22 champions Madhya Pradesh by 56 runs in a gripping quarter-final at the Holkar Stadium. The victory marked a watershed moment for J&K, who advanced to the last four for the first time in their Ranji Trophy journey, 67 years after making their debut in the competition and six years after their previous knockout appearance.

Fast bowler Auqib Nabi was the architect of the historic triumph, returning sensational match figures of 12 for 110. Madhya Pradesh began the fourth day at 87 for five, requiring 204 runs for victory, but Nabi struck early to remove Venkatesh Iyer, tilting the contest firmly in J&K’s favour.

Saransh Jain mounted a spirited resistance with a well-made 64, briefly reviving hopes of a chase, but Nabi produced a decisive moment, sending one back sharply to beat Jain’s defence. Madhya Pradesh slipped to 211 for nine, though the last-wicket pair of Aryan Pandey and Kuldeep Sen extended the contest with a defiant 23-run stand. The resistance finally ended when Yudhvir Singh clean bowled Pandey to seal a famous win for J&K.

Earlier in the match, J&K bounced back after being bowled out for 194 in the first innings, with Nabi’s remarkable 7 for 40 handing them a slender but crucial 42-run lead. Madhya Pradesh responded strongly, pushing J&K onto the back foot in the second innings by reducing them to 73 for five. However, the lower order staged a timely recovery, led by Abid Mushtaq’s vital 41 and Vanshraj Sharma’s composed 54.

Despite that fightback, J&K were still struggling at 183 for nine and looked set to set a target under 250. But a crucial 65-run partnership for the 10th wicket between Sunil Kumar and Yudhvir Singh transformed the equation, giving J&K the cushion they needed to defend a challenging total.

Kanpur Lamborghini Crash: Tobacco tycoon’s son named in FIR; Lawyer says he wasn’t driving

“The FIR of the accident was registered earlier, and now, in our investigation, we have learned that the name of the driver is Shivam Mishra,” Kanpur Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal said in a press conference.

The police have included the name of Shivam Mishra, the son of tobacco tycoon KK Mishra, in the FIR filed in connection with the Kanpur Lamborghini crash. The FIR registered initially had named “unidentified person” as the driver of the speeding luxury car.

“The FIR of the accident was registered earlier, and now, in our investigation, we have learned that the name of the driver is Shivam Mishra,” Kanpur Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal said in a press conference.

However, Shivam Mishra’s lawyer, Mrityunjay Kumar, has claimed that it was his client’s driver who was driving the car at the time of the accident. “Shivam was not driving; his driver, Mohan, was. This is an accident case. When he was not driving, then there can be no case against him,” Kumar said.

However, the police claimed that the speeding car was being driven by Shivam Mishra and his bouncers pulled him out after the accident.

“We have found the details of the car. The car has been seized. The car was driven by Shivam Mishra. After the accident, Shivam Mishra’s bouncers pulled him out of the car,” the Kanpur Police Commissioner said.

The Commissioner also said that Shivam has some medical issues. According to reports, his family had initially claimed that he suffered seizures, which led to the crash.

According to reports, the accident took place on Sunday afternoon on VIP Road near Rev-3 Mall in the Gwaltoli area in Kanpur. The luxury car allegedly being driven by the tobacco tycoon’s son rammed into pedestrians and vehicles.

The car first hit an auto-rickshaw before ramming into a motorcycle and hitting several people. While the incident is currently under investigation, no arrests have been made so far.

Union minister promises higher incomes, handloom push at Shantipur weavers’ meet

Union textile minister Giriraj Singh on Sunday promised a series of measures to boost the income and business prospects of weavers and handloom workers in poll-bound West Bengal, asserting that their daily earnings would see a sharp rise if the BJP comes to power in the state.

Union textile minister Giriraj Singh on Sunday promised a series of measures to boost the income and business prospects of weavers and handloom workers in poll-bound West Bengal, asserting that their daily earnings would see a sharp rise if the BJP comes to power in the state.

Addressing a large gathering of weavers and textile artisans at Shantipur in Nadia district, Singh said the Centre would work to expand markets for Bengal’s handloom products and ensure greater financial security for those engaged in the sector.

The programme was organised by the BJP’s weavers and textile workers’ cell, led by state convener Anil Biswas. State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya and local MP Jagannath Sarkar were also present.

Singh alleged that institutions like Tantuj, which were set up to promote cottage and handloom-based textiles, had failed in their core objective under the present state government.

He claimed that machine-made fabrics and garments sourced from Bangladesh were now dominating such outlets.

Singh said that if a BJP government is formed in West Bengal, Tantuj would exclusively promote hand-woven products.

He also announced that school uniforms supplied to students in the state would be made only from handloom fabric.

Interacting with the weavers, Singh asked about their average daily earnings, to which the response was around Rs 200.

When told that they aspired to earn at least Rs 500 a day, the minister said he was committing to ensuring opportunities for daily earnings of up to Rs 1,500.

He added that efforts would be made to create direct markets for Bengal’s textiles in the US and Europe.

After the programme, Singh had lunch at the residence of a local weaver. Anil Biswas claimed that if the minister’s announcements are implemented, around seven lakh weavers and textile workers across the state would benefit.

The festival of Mahashivratri will be celebrated with grand, divine, and traditional fervor this year in Kashi, the city of Lord Mahadev.
On Mahashivratri, Kashi’s Lord Baba Vishwanath will appear before devotees as a groom. On this occasion, Baba’s special adornment will include a traditional turban made of Rudraksha, fruits, dry fruits, and flowers, symbolizing the folk tradition and faith of Shiva’s marriage.

On Mahashivratri, Baba’s adornment is done according to the centuries-old traditions of Kashi. The turban holds special significance in this groom’s adornment. The turban, made of Rudraksha, symbolizes Baba’s tradition of renunciation and the Shiva principle, while the fruits, dry fruits, and flowers used in the turban represent folk customs and auspiciousness.

This Sehra will be offered to Baba from the Mahant’s residence at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Tedhinim to the Shiva Baraat and the four-hour Aartis held throughout the night at Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham.

This Sehra will remain in place during all the Aartis held in the temple, including the movable idol of Baba.

Pandit Vachaspati Tiwari explained that the Sehra is being prepared entirely from natural and religious materials. Rudraksha, along with makhana (sunflower seeds), cloves, cardamom, Shivalingi, grapes, and various fragrant flowers, will be used. All these items have religious and spiritual significance. Rudraksha is a favorite of Shiva, the Shivalingi is considered a symbol of progeny and prosperity, while fruits and nuts represent good wishes and devotion.

The Shiva Baraat holds special significance in Kashi on Mahashivratri. According to folk tradition, Lord Shiva sets out as a groom to marry Mother Gauri. In keeping with this tradition, Baba Vishwanath is adorned in the form of a groom. The Sehra (headgear) is a key part of this adornment, bestowing a supernatural beauty on Baba’s head.

Pandit Vachaspati Tiwari stated that on the occasion of Mahashivratri, the Saptarishi Aarti will be held at the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple at all four times. This Aarti is a unique tradition of Kashi, in which the Aarti is performed with special rituals symbolizing the seven sages. The Saptarishi Aarti will be conducted under the leadership of Pt. Shashi Bhushan Tripathi ‘Guddu Maharaj’, a senior member of the Mahant family and head of the Saptarishi Aarti.

The night of Mahashivratri is considered extremely special for Baba. Aarti, Abhishek, and special worship continue throughout the night in the temple. Devotees queue up throughout the night to have darshan and Jalabhishek of Baba. Devotees are particularly excited to see Baba in his groom form.

On the holy night of Mahashivratri, when Baba Vishwanath will appear before the devotees in the form of a groom with a turban decorated with Rudraksha and dry fruits, a wonderful confluence of devotion, tradition and spiritual energy will be seen in Kashi.

Zimbabwe began their 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup campaign with a dominant eight-wicket victory over Oman in their Group B opener at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo on Monday.

After winning the toss and opting to field, Zimbabwe’s pace trio of Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava, and Brad Evans ripped through Oman’s batting lineup to bowl them out for 103 in 19.5 overs. Zimbabwe then chased down the target with ease, reaching 106/2 in just 13.3 overs to seal the win with 39 balls to spare.

Oman suffered a disastrous start after being put in to bat. Blessing Muzarabani struck early, clean-bowling skipper Jatinder Singh (5) with the first ball of the second over. Richard Ngarava then removed experienced batter Hammad Mirza in the following over to pile on the pressure.

Muzarabani returned to dismiss veteran all-rounder Aamir Kaleem, who became the oldest player to feature in a T20 World Cup match at 44 years and 81 days. In the same over, he also accounted for Karan Sonavale for a duck. Oman slipped to 27/5 when Sikandar Raza bowled Wasim Ali just after the powerplay.

Wicketkeeper-batter Vinayak Shukla and Sufyan Mehmood attempted a recovery, adding 42 runs—the highest partnership of the innings. Vinayak made 28 off 21 balls with four boundaries before falling to Ngarava, who later dismissed Jiten Ramanandi in the same over to complete his three-wicket haul.

Sufyan fought on with 25 off 39 balls, while Nadeem Khan added a late 20 off 18, but Brad Evans wrapped up the tail as Oman were bowled out for 103 in 19.5 overs.

Muzarabani (3/16), Ngarava (3/17), and Evans (3/18) were the standout bowlers, with skipper Sikandar Raza also picking up a wicket.

Zimbabwe’s chase was straightforward, with Brian Bennett anchoring the innings with an unbeaten 48 off 36 balls. Veteran Brendan Taylor retired hurt on 31 with a hamstring issue, just six runs short of the target, but the result was never in doubt as Zimbabwe cruised home in 13.3 overs.
