India-Bangladesh: From Frosty to Warmer Climes

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi who has on Friday morning tweeted his congratulations to BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman following his party’s landslide victory in Bangladesh’s national elections may make a personal effort to cultivate the newly minted leader.

Jayanta Roy Chowdhury, Tarique Rahman | New Delhi |

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi who has on Friday morning tweeted his congratulations to BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman following his party’s landslide victory in Bangladesh’s national elections may make a personal effort to cultivate the newly minted leader.

Top Bangladesh officials said there was a distinct possibility of the two talking to each other soon, marking a new chapter in relations between the two neighbours, which have been frosty for some time.

India’s discomfort with an evidently inimical Mohammad Yunus-led government in Dhaka has been well know. Relations had dipped to a new low when it was suspected that the current regime had engineered protests outside Indian missions in Bangladesh which included instances of attacks.

However, analysts do not expect an immediate rush towards bonhomie but rather a measured and structured approach.

Despite the BNP’s victory, Rahman is unlikely to move too swiftly in warming ties with India.

Anti-India sentiment has long been a potent political instrument in Bangladesh’s domestic politics. Any perception of being overly eager to court New Delhi could hand ammunition to his political opponents seeking to portray the new government as compromising national interests.

As a result, progress on two of the most sensitive bilateral issues, trade and river water sharing, is expected to be steady but not necessarily on the fast lane.

Bangladesh has consistently sought expanded market access and resolution of long-pending water-sharing agreements. India, for its part, remains concerned about security cooperation and regional strategic alignment. “The negotiations are likely to proceed in a pragmatic but measured manner,” top Indian officials said.

Zafar Sobhan, a prominent Bangladeshi intellectual and editor, argues that the incoming BNP government faces multiple challenges beyond foreign policy recalibration.

“The relationship with India is certainly one,” he notes, “but it is only one among several major tests.”

A second major challenge will be managing the political future of the Awami League. The BNP has long demanded restrictions on its principal rival. However, outright political exclusion carries risks, both domestically and internationally. Some degree of accommodation may ultimately prove necessary to preserve political stability and democratic credibility.

The most sensitive issue, however, revolves around former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Bringing Hasina back to Bangladesh would be politically explosive. It could inflame domestic tensions, provoke street mobilisation, and complicate Dhaka’s internal politics to the extent that there could be a swift change in government.

Not to speak of complicating relations with New Delhi, where she currently resides. At the same time, the BNP cannot openly advocate her continued exile in India without appearing politically compromised.

For the new government, therefore, allowing Hasina to remain abroad may be the least destabilising option, while paying lip- sympathy to the old Yunus demand for her return.

The coming weeks will test the BNP’s political dexterity. It must reassure domestic constituencies, stabilize a polarised political landscape, and recalibrate relations with India without appearing subservient.

BNP’s sagacity will also be tested on other fronts. Journalists and academics such as Shyamal Dutta, Prof Abul Barkat, who were carted off to jail on various charges ranging from murder, spying, to corruption, may not immediately be freed.

But with the gag earlier seen on Dhaka’s media taken off, their cases may not be adjudged in the perfunctory and vengeful manner that was clearly visible.

The gossip in Dhaka is that several of the top advisors in the interim government will exit Bangladesh altogether, while others will stay on and rejoin their professions as university teachers, media-persons or NGOs.

Law Adviser Asif Nazrul wants to go back to research. Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain wants to concentrate on writing, while Food and Land Adviser Ali Imam Majumder will go back to being a columnist.

Two women in Yunus’s cabinet want to go back to their NGOs. Social Welfare Adviser Sharmeen S Murshid is likely to return to her NGO ‘Brotee’ to work on human rights issues, while Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan will return to her legal NGO – Bela.

Engineer’s death in Noida pit prompts UP govt to roll out ‘Disaster Friends’ training

Since there were no other occupants in the car, as per reports, there were no injuries or casualties in the incident.

The incident brought back memories of the January 18 incident in Noida’s Sector 150 when a techie lost his life after his car plunged into a water-filled pit, which had been dug for the construction of a society.

The death of Yuvraj Mehta triggered public outrage and forced several actions at the Noida authority level. While the incident highlighted gaps in construction-related safety, it also brought to the fore the underpreparedness and delayed response of the local authority in saving the life of the techie, who kept waiting for help for about two hours.

Weeks after Noida drowning incident, biker dies in Delhi after falling into deep pit dug by Jal Board

The death of a biker in Delhi’s Janakpuri area also triggered outrage a few days ago. The motorcyclist died after his bike plunged into a deep pit dug for pipeline work by the Delhi Jal Board. It was alleged that the pit was not barricaded and there were no warning signs.

Lawrence Bishnoi gang warns Ranveer Singh, Rohit Shetty again: ‘Even your next seven generations can’t touch us’

Bollywood stars Ranveer Singh and Rohit Shetty face fresh threats from gangster Harry Boxer of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang after filing a police complaint. Mumbai Crime Branch is investigating extortion demands and targeting of managers.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Bollywood’s action-packed life seems to have spilled off-screen into real danger. Superstar Ranveer Singh and director Rohit Shetty are reportedly being threatened by gangster Harry Boxer, a key associate of the notorious Lawrence Bishnoi gang. The warning comes after the duo filed a police complaint. This move apparently did not sit well with the gang.

What are the chilling threats?

The menacing message sent to Ranveer Singh carried a terrifying claim. Not just him, but “even your next seven generations will not be able to harm us.”

The threat detailed intimate knowledge of their lives including their managers’ addresses, daily routines, family residences. The sender warned that if Ranveer and Rohit did not “mend their ways,” the managers could be targeted one by one.

Adding a sinister twist, the threat also claimed responsibility for a recent shooting incident linked to the seizure of Indian passports in Portugal.

Voice note links Harry Boxer to Rs 1 crore extortion

The Mumbai Crime Branch has traced a threatening WhatsApp voice note demanding Rs 1 crore from Ranveer Singh. Preliminary investigations suggest the voice belongs to Harry Boxer.

Officials say the note was sent to Ranveer’s manager following a firing incident outside Rohit Shetty’s home.

The voice note, now sent for forensic examination, is part of ongoing efforts to collect further evidence.

Meanwhile, Ranveer’s security arrangements have reportedly been beefed up as a precaution.

Investigators revealed that a VPN network was used to send the message. Current traces point to a foreign country, prompting authorities to seek Interpol’s help to track the source.

Officials are trying to identify which country’s VPN network was active at the time.

The Crime Branch has also recorded statements from the managers of actor Aayush Sharma and superstar Salman Khan’s brother-in-law in related investigations.

The accident took place around 6 pm when the Class 12 student was returning after attending a farewell function at his school. Reports further said a female friend of the boy was also in the car at the time of the incident. Both are said to be minors.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Just days after the Lamborghini car crash in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur made national headlines, a tragic hit-and-run incident has been reported from the state capital Lucknow.

A speeding car, which has not been officially identified so far, reported hit an auto-rickshaw and pedestrians near Hanuman Temple in Banthra on Thursday (February 12). Five people were injured in the accident. A 6-year-old child, among the injured, succumbed to the wounds during treatment.

The Lucknow police said they have carried out the inquest proceedings and informed the families.

Media reports, meanwhile, said the car involved in the accident was a Maruti Swift and it was being driven by a Class 12 student.

The accident took place around 6 pm when the student was returning after attending a farewell function at his school. Reports further said a female friend of the boy was also in the car at the time of the incident. Both are said to be minors.

The duo left the accident scene without stopping the car. The boy dropped the girl shortly after the accident and fled.

While the police is reported to have seized the car after tracking the girl, the boy is said to be on the run.

The police are ascertaining whether the boy was driving the car under the influence of alcohol.

The injure are, meanwhile, undergoing treatment at a hospital and are said to be stable.

CCTV footage of the incident from two different angles has also emerged.

1. Girls Trip (2017)

If there’s one movie that screams, “Life is better with your besties”, it’s ‘Girls Trip’. Queen Latifah, Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Tiffany Haddish deliver laughs, tears, and chaos in New Orleans like no one else could.

The story follows four friends reuniting for a wild trip, packed with music, dancing, and misadventures that make you forget about Valentine’s heartbreaks or lonely nights. Tiffany Haddish’s comic timing alone is enough to have you in stitches.

2. Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion (1997)

Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is a gem of the late ‘90s that you may have forgotten, but it’s perfect for a Valentine’s Day solo watch. Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino play two friends who haven’t exactly conquered adulthood. They fake impressive careers to impress old classmates at their ten-year reunion, and the results are glorious.

3. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005)

Before ‘Girls Trip’, there was ‘The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants’, the ultimate ode to friendship and growing up. America Ferrera, Blake Lively, Alexis Bledel, and Amber Tamblyn share a pair of pants that magically fit all of them.

Valentine’s Day can be rough when you’re single, but this movie shows that your friends can fill your life with just as much love, if not more.

4. Wild (2014)

Who says Valentine’s Day is only for couples? ‘Wild’ proves that conquering the world or at least the Pacific Crest Trail solo is far more empowering. Reese Witherspoon gives an underrated performance as Cheryl Strayed, a woman hiking 2,653 miles to rebuild her life after personal tragedy.

Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, this film is about resilience. By the end, you’ll feel inspired to hike metaphorical trails of your own (or just conquer your own pizza).

5. Eat, Pray, Love (2010)

Julia Roberts is perfect as Elizabeth Gilbert, a woman taking a year off to travel, eat incredible food, meditate, and find herself after a painful divorce. Critically, it was polarising, but audiences couldn’t get enough of it and for good reason.

You can fall in love with… well, ‘you’.

6. The First Wives Club (1996)

Sometimes being single means dodging disasters. ‘The First Wives Club’ is a hilarious celebration of that fact. Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton, and Bette Midler star as three women who were left for younger partners. And they aren’t taking it lying down.

This movie is funny, empowering, downright satisfying.

7. Marriage Story (2019)

If you’re in the mood for something heavier, ‘Marriage Story’ is painfully honest look at divorce and heartbreak. Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver’s performances will hit you right in feels.

While it’s tough to watch, it’s strangely cathartic for singles. Watching someone else navigate the complexities of marriage (and survive) can make your own single life feel like a blessing.

8. Gone Girl (2014)

Romance isn’t always sweet. Sometimes it’s terrifying. ‘Gone Girl’ directed by David Fincher shows what happens when love goes wrong, really wrong. Rosamund Pike stars as a missing wife. Ben Affleck’s husband becomes the prime suspect.

Twists, deception, suspense make this psychological thriller you can’t take your eyes off.

For singles, it’s oddly satisfying. No messy breakups, no suspicions. You’re free!

9. Heathers (1989)

High school crushes can be toxic. And ‘Heathers’ doesn’t sugarcoat it. Winona Ryder plays Veronica, navigating a clique of girls all named Heather while dating the dangerously charming JD (Christian Slater).

This black comedy shows the dangers of toxic relationships in the most entertaining way. Watching from the sidelines makes being single feel downright safe.

10. A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)

Sometimes you need a classic. ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ adapted from Tennessee Williams’ legendary play is timeless story of personal reinvention. Vivien Leigh stars as Blanche DuBois. He moves to New Orleans to start anew after personal trauma, navigating passion, tension, and self-realisation along the way.

For singles, this 1950s masterpiece tells you that heartbreak doesn’t define you.

T20 WC: All stats from India’s win over Namibia in New Delhi

India scripted history on Thursday with consecutive 10th victories in the T20 World Cup tournament after thrashing Namibia by 93 runs in the Men’s T20 World Cup at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

IANS | New Delhi |

India scripted history on Thursday with consecutive 10th victories in the T20 World Cup tournament after thrashing Namibia by 93 runs in the Men’s T20 World Cup at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

The previous record stood in the name of Australia and South Africa who have won 8 successive matches each.

Wrist-spinner Varun Chakaravarthy claimed 3-7 after India posted 209/9 in their 20 overs, powered by Ishan Kishan’s blistering 61 off 24 balls and Hardik Pandya’s 52 off 28 balls. Namibia’s captain Gerhard Erasmus was the pick of their bowlers, returning figures of 4-20 with his slingy style and myriad of variations.

Namibia’s chase began brightly with Louren Steenkamp and Jan Frylinck attacking in the powerplay, but Chakravarthy’s spell dismantled their middle order. Every Indian bowler chipped in with at least a wicket as Namibia were bowled out for 116 in 18.2 overs. The 93-run margin is also India’s biggest victory in Men’s T20 World Cup history, underlining their dominance despite occasional lapses in the match.

Namibia’s chase began with Jan Frylinck taking a four and six off Hardik Pandya, before driving and pulling Arshdeep Singh for two boundaries. But Arshdeep struck back in the fourth over as Frylinck miscued a knuckle ball to deep mid-wicket. Louren Steenkamp carved Arshdeep for two boundaries and a six slashed over the short third, as Namibia ended Power-play at 57/1.

After Namibia milked 10 runs from Jasprit Bumrah’s opening over, Varun Chakaravarthy turned the game in the eighth over – his first ball was a googly that castled Steenkamp for 29. Loftie-Eaton and Erasmus tried to rebuild, but Varun’s accuracy kept them quiet.

Though Axar Patel was greeted with back-to-back slog-sweeping sixes from Gerhard Erasmus in the ninth over, Varun returned to dismantle Namibia further – having Loftie-Eaton hole out to long-off, while castling JJ Smit with another googly.

Axar joined the wicket-taker charts when Erasmus holed out to long-off and then had Malan Kruger top-edging a sweep to short fine leg, who managed to hang on to the ball at the last moment. Bumrah, who came in for Mohammed Siraj, nailed a yorker on the base of off-stump to castle Ruben Trumpelmann, while Hardik bagged two scalps and Shivam Dube had Zane Green dismissed via hit wicket to help India get their tenth consecutive win in the T20 World Cups.

Numbers game between India v Namibia match:

10: This was India’s 10th consecutive wins in the T20 WC. It is a new world record. Previous record stood in the name of Australia and South Africa who have won 8 successive matches each.

4: Gerhard Erasmus who took 4/20 in Delhi became the fourth captain to capture four wickets in a T20 WC match. Rashid Khan of Afghanistan, Daniel Vettori of New Zealand, Zeeshan Maqsood of Oman are the others. Rashid Khan achieved this feat twice. He took 4/17 v NZ in Providence in 2024 and 4/23 v Bangladesh in Kingstown ,2024.

4: India scored 209 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs. In the history of T20WC , it was the 4th occasion when India managed to score 200 or more runs during an innings.

47: Now India has scored 200 plus runs in T20Is 47 times. This is also a new world record. After India, South Africa has scored 200 plus in T20Is for the 29 times.

4: Ishan Kishan completed his fifty in just 20 balls. In T20WCs it was the 5th instance when an Indian batter completed his 50 in 20 or less balls. Yuvraj Singh achieved this feat twice. Yuvraj completed his 50 v England in Durban in 2007 off just 12 balls ( a world record) while against Australia in Durban in 2007 he also completed his half-century off just 20 balls.

6.5: India took only 6.5 overs to reach 100, the least overs taken by a team in T20 WC. The previous record was held by Netherlands who completed their 100 in 7 overs.

From ‘Dark Prince’ to Bangladesh’s new power centre: How US cables once defined Tarique Rahman

Two decades after being scrutinised in international correspondence, Tarique Rahman now stands at the centre of Bangladesh’s political transition.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Tarique Rahman, once described in US diplomatic cables as the “Dark Prince”, has led the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to a sweeping victory in Bangladesh’s Parliamentary Elections, securing around 210 of 299 contested seats, according to the latest count.

The win marks the first national election since the 2024 student-led uprising that ended the Awami League’s tenure and forced the resignation of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. With the simple majority mark set at 151 seats in the 300-member Parliament, the BNP’s result positions Rahman to form the next government.

The ‘Dark Prince’ label and its origins

The moniker “Dark Prince” originated not from Bangladeshi political rivals but from US diplomatic correspondence during the BNP-Jamaat government years.

In a December 2005 diplomatic cable, then US Charge d’Affaires Judith A Chammas referred to Tarique Rahman as the “Dark Prince”, remarking that he carried “the Zia name, political cunning, and mountains of cash generated by his Hawa Bhaban’s collection of tolls from businesses and BNP political aspirants”, as reported by the Bangladeshi daily Dhaka Tribune in 2023.

Former US ambassador James F Moriarty also referred to Rahman in sharply critical terms. A 2011 WikiLeaks disclosure quoted him as calling Tarique “a symbol of kleptocratic government and violent politics in Bangladesh” and accusing him of “flagrantly and frequently demanding bribes” in exchange for government contracts as well as appointments. He reportedly recommended restricting Rahman’s entry into the United States.

Those cables later became public and have since shaped international perceptions of Rahman’s political past.

A changed political landscape

The current election, however, unfolds in a very different context. Around 61 per cent of registered voters participated, according to officials in Dhaka. While the BNP secured 210 seats, the Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance won 73 seats, and independents claimed 8.

Jamaat-e-Islami expressed dissatisfaction with the results, stating it was “not satisfied with the process surrounding the election results” and alleging irregularities in certain constituencies.

Rahman secured the Dhaka-17 seat with 72,699 votes, finishing 4,399 votes ahead of his closest challenger. He was also unofficially declared elected from Bogra-6, where he polled 216,284 votes.

The election also included a referendum on the July National Charter, addressing constitutional reforms such as limits on prime ministers’ terms and the restoration of a caretaker system.

Regional reactions and diplomatic signals

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Rahman, describing the outcome as a “decisive victory” and expressing readiness to strengthen bilateral ties.

Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also extended congratulations, signalling regional willingness to engage with the new leadership in Dhaka.

Observers say the BNP’s return to power could shape the trajectory of India-Bangladesh relations, particularly in trade, connectivity and regional cooperation.

A second chapter

Rahman, son of former president General Ziaur Rahman, has now moved from opposition leadership to the centre of power. His electoral mandate marks a significant shift in Bangladesh’s political landscape and represents a striking contrast to the international scrutiny that once defined his image abroad.

Dhurandhar goes cheaper than a snack in Pakistan! Viral reel shows Ranveer Singh’s hit thriller at Rs 16 in Karachi

Karl Rock couldn’t believe his eyes when he spotted pirated copies of Ranveer Singh’s ‘Dhurandhar’ selling for just Rs 16 in Karachi, Pakistan. Even with the ban on Indian films, this spy thriller is flying off the shelves.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Who said Indian films don’t reach Pakistan? Apparently, the new Ranveer Singh spy thriller ‘Dhurandhar’ found a sneaky shortcut straight into Karachi’s bustling Rainbow Centre, a famous hub for pirated movies. YouTuber Karl Rock, who is based in India, recently took social media on a tour of this unexpected film treasure trove, and fans are having a field day.

Walking through the crowded alleys, Karl spotted stacks of DVDs and blurted out in his usual amazed style, “Indian films are banned in Pakistan, but look what I found!”

Yes, you read that right. Despite the official ban, Dhurandhar copies were being sold openly for just PKR 50, roughly ₹16. The shopkeeper confirmed, “Sir, this is an Indian film, Dhurandhar. It has been released recently.”

Ranveer Singh’s Sindhi roots make it extra special

Karl didn’t just stop at the pirated copy. He took a moment to talk about Ranveer Singh, the film’s lead star, who has Sindhi roots.

“I can tell you a thing or two about Ranveer Singh,” Karl said. He pointed out that the actor’s grandparents originally hailed from Pakistan and migrated to India during the Partition.

Dhurandhar on Netflix breaks borders

Even though Pakistani cinemas have long kept Indian films at bay, ‘Dhurandhar’ isn’t letting geography stop it. After premiering on Netflix on January 30, the movie quickly topped the platform’s Top 10 list not only in India but also in Pakistan.

The espionage drama even made it to the global Top 10 non-English films.

Dhurandhar originally hit Indian theaters on December 5, and the film’s success has been nothing short of explosive. Alongside Ranveer Singh, it boasts a powerhouse cast including Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, R Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, and Rakesh Bedi.

Given the film’s runaway popularity, fans don’t have long to wait. The sequel, ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’, is already slated for a March 19 release in theaters.

Men in Blue enter golden era of T20 cricket

In the fast-paced, ever-unpredictable world of T20 cricket, India has carved out a niche that is nothing short of extraordinary.

UNI | New Delhi |

In the fast-paced, ever-unpredictable world of T20 cricket, India has carved out a niche that is nothing short of extraordinary. Watching this team play between 2024 and 2026 has been a masterclass in consistency, power, and strategic brilliance.

Ten consecutive wins in the Men’s T20 World Cup is no small feat; it is a statement, a declaration of dominance. To put it in perspective, this streak surpasses the previous benchmarks of South Africa’s eight wins in 2024 and Australia’s run of eight victories from 2022 to 2024. This is not merely a winning streak—it is a demonstration of India’s ability to perform under pressure, across conditions, against all oppositions.

But numbers alone don’t tell the full story. The manner in which India has achieved these victories is equally compelling. Their triumph over Namibia in Delhi in 2026 by 93 runs was a masterclass in both batting aggression and disciplined bowling. Earlier wins, such as 90 runs against England in Colombo (2012), 73 runs versus Australia in Mirpur (2014), and 71 runs against Zimbabwe in Melbourne (2022), highlight a team capable of imposing itself irrespective of venue or opponent.

Individual brilliance has often illuminated these team performances. Rashid Khan of Afghanistan, with two 4-wicket hauls in the 2024 World Cup, has shown that leadership and skill can coexist under pressure. Gerhard Erasmus of Namibia’s 4/20 against India in Delhi (2026) and historical figures such as Daniel Vettori (2007) and Zeeshan Maqsood (2021) remind us that T20 cricket is a stage for game-changing performances.

On the batting front, India has been a powerhouse. Crossing 200 runs in T20 World Cups has become almost routine. From 218/4 against England in Durban (2007) to 210/2 against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi (2021), 209/9 versus Namibia in Delhi (2026), and 205/5 over Australia in Gros Islet (2024), India has demonstrated depth, firepower, and adaptability.
In the larger context of T20Is, India leads all teams with 47 200-plus totals, ahead of South Africa (29), New Zealand (28), Australia (25), and West Indies (25). Post the 2024 World Cup, India has struck 14 200-plus totals—more than double any other side in this timeframe.

The powerplay has become a canvas for India’s artistry. The team’s highest T20I powerplay scores include 95/1 against England in Mumbai (2025) and 94/2 against New Zealand in Guwahati (2026). During the 2026 T20 World Cup, India posted 86/1 against Namibia, and earlier powerplay highlights include 82/2 versus Scotland in Dubai (2021) and 82/1 against Bangladesh in Hyderabad (2024).

Beyond India, the T20 World Cup has witnessed thrilling starts, such as West Indies’ 92/1 against Afghanistan (2024) and Netherlands’ 91/1 against Ireland (2014), underscoring how the first six overs have become a defining segment of the game.

Early aggression has been the hallmark of some of India’s finest players. Abhishek Sharma has reached 50 within the first six overs on three occasions, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan twice each, KL Rahul once, and Yashasvi Jaiswal once. This ability to accelerate from the first ball sets the tone and puts opposition under immediate pressure.

In conclusion, India’s recent T20 journey represents a synthesis of team excellence, individual brilliance, and tactical acuity. The Men in Blue are not just winning—they are defining what dominance in the shortest format should look like. From record consecutive wins to explosive powerplays, from 200-plus totals to match-winning individual performances, this period will be remembered as a golden era in India’s T20 cricket history. Watching this team in action is a reminder that, in T20 cricket as in life, preparation, skill, and fearlessness combine to produce something truly spectacular.

Unbeaten Titans Clash: New Zealand take on South Africa in Ahmedabad

Explosive clash of unbeaten heavyweights with records on the line, and the drama of chasing under dew at a batting paradise.

UNI | New Delhi |

Explosive clash of unbeaten heavyweights with records on the line, and the drama of chasing under dew at a batting paradise. That’s what awaits fans at the Narendra Modi Stadium here on Friday, when New Zealand faces South Africa in a high-stakes Group D encounter of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Both teams arrive undefeated, each with two wins from two matches, making this a critical showdown in the race for the top spot.

New Zealand enters the match in blistering form, riding the wave of a historic opening partnership between Finn Allen and Tim Seifert. Against UAE, the duo smashed an unbeaten 175-run stand, the highest for any wicket in T20I cricket history, to chase down 174 in just 15.2 overs. Allen, who topped the Big Bash League 2025-26 run charts with 466 runs in 11 matches, has continued his destructive form with 84 off 50 balls at a strike rate of 168, while Seifert contributed 89 off 42 balls, striking at 211.9.

The middle order, led by Glenn Phillips and Daryl Mitchell, offers depth and aggression, capable of maintaining the momentum and finishing games with authority. New Zealand’s bowling attack is a balanced unit, with pace spearheaded by Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, and Jacob Duffy, while spinners Mitchell Santner, Glenn Phillips, and Rachin Ravindra provide breakthroughs in the middle overs. The Kiwis combine explosive batting at the top with dependable bowling, making them a formidable contender in this tournament.

South Africa, however, is no stranger to drama. In a thrilling encounter against Afghanistan, the Proteas survived a double Super Over, showing immense composure under pressure. Quinton de Kock has led the charge at the top, scoring 149 runs in three matches at the Narendra Modi Stadium, while Ryan Rickelton has been aggressive and in form, striking 61 off 28 balls against Afghanistan. Aiden Markram and David Miller provide stability in the middle, but the Proteas’ middle order remains a potential vulnerability.
The bowling is anchored by Lungi Ngidi, who has claimed seven wickets in two games, supported by Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada. Spin options Keshav Maharaj and George Linde have had a limited impact on a pitch that offers little for turn.

The Narendra Modi Stadium pitch is a batting paradise, flat with true bounce and a fast outfield. High scores above 200 are common, particularly under lights, while dew in the evening favors the chasing side, making the toss a crucial factor. With clear skies, temperatures ranging between 22°C and 33°C, and light winds, conditions are ideal for a high-octane contest.

This clash promises fireworks, as explosive openers, resilient middle orders, and strike bowlers battle under lights. Records may tumble, tension will soar, and one team will seize an early psychological edge in the tournament. On a pitch made for strokemaking and with dew favouring the team batting second, New Zealand’s firepower gives them a slight edge in what is expected to be a thrilling encounter between two unbeaten heavyweights.

Out-of-control car sparks deadly chain collision, seven killed near Bengaluru

Police are probing possible overspeeding and whether the driver was inebriated after a chain collision on a Bengaluru highway killed seven people.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Seven people were killed early Friday morning in a chain collision involving a car, a motorcycle, and a canter truck on the Hoskote-Dabaspete National Highway near M Sathyavara village in Hoskote taluk of Bengaluru Rural district.

The crash, which occurred earlier today, left six occupants of an XUV and a bike rider dead on the spot, police said. The accident has once again brought focus on road safety along the busy stretch connecting Kolar and Devanahalli.

According to preliminary police findings, the XUV was travelling from Kolar towards Devanahalli when it first struck a motorcycle moving ahead of it. The driver is believed to have lost control after the initial impact, and the vehicle then rammed into a canter truck, triggering a fatal sequence of collisions.

How the accident unfolded on the Hoskote-Dabaspete highway

The force of the crash was severe. Police said the XUV was completely mangled. After the collision, both the truck and the motorcycle reportedly crossed the median and landed on the opposite side of the highway. The damaged XUV, meanwhile, came to rest nearly 500 metres away from where the other vehicles had fallen.

Six people travelling in the car and the rider of the motorcycle died at the scene. All six deceased from the car are said to be residents of Kothanur in Bengaluru.

IGP (Central) Labhu Ram, who visited the spot, stated, “Seven persons were killed in a series of road accident. We have cleared the vehicle and shifted the bodies to the hospital. Among the dead, the bodies of six persons — travelling on a bike and an XUV — have been identified. We will contact their family and relatives and complete the next procedures. The efforts are on to identify another deceased person.”

He added, “The investigation is on to find out whether the car driver was driving the vehicle in an inebriated state. We can’t say anything in this regard.”

Overspeeding suspected; probe underway

Police officials said overspeeding appears to be the primary cause of the mishap, based on initial findings. However, they clarified that a detailed investigation is ongoing.

Personnel from the Sulibele police station rushed to the scene soon after the crash. The bodies have been shifted to the government hospital in Hoskote for post-mortem examination. Bengaluru Rural Superintendent of Police Chandrakant also inspected the accident site.

Residents question highway design

In the aftermath of the tragedy, local residents raised concerns about the design and construction quality of the highway stretch between Sadappanahalli and Kamalipura Bridge. They alleged that the road lacks proper scientific planning and claimed that objections had been flagged by an engineer during construction regarding design flaws.

More details are awaited as the police continue their probe.

After BNP’s decisive win, India and US signal readiness to engage Bangladesh’s new leadership

The decisive BNP mandate prompted rapid diplomatic messaging from New Delhi and Washington, underlining Bangladesh’s strategic importance during a sensitive political transition.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

India and the United States have moved quickly to engage Bangladesh’s incoming leadership after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) claimed a decisive victory in the 13th Parliamentary Election.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday congratulated Tarique Rahman for leading the BNP to what he described as a “decisive victory”, stating that India would continue to support a “democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh” and that he looked forward to working together to strengthen bilateral ties.

Within hours, US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen also extended congratulations, calling it a “historic victory” and saying Washington looked forward to collaborating to realise shared goals of prosperity and security.

Tarique Rahman poised to lead new government

According to unofficial results cited by local media, the BNP-led alliance has won 210 seats in the 13th Parliamentary Election, paving the way for the formation of a new government under Tarique Rahman.

Local reports indicate that Tarique Rahman is set to lead the new government. Unofficial constituency-level results show he secured 72,699 votes in Dhaka-17, defeating Jamaat-e-Islami candidate SM Khaliduzzaman, who received 68,300 votes. He also won the Bogra-6 constituency with 216,284 votes.

Following the death of former prime minister Khaleda Zia in December last year, Tarique assumed leadership of the BNP. His victory signals a major shift in the politics of Bangladesh. If confirmed, Tarique Rahman would become the country’s first male prime minister in nearly 35 years.

Even as the final results are awaited, India and the US have moved quickly to congratulate him, a sign that both are keen to see a stable and smooth transition in Dhaka
