No financial crisis in Rajasthan, says state finance panel chief Arun Chaturvedi

Rajasthan State Finance Commission Chairman Arun Chaturvedi has categorically rejected the “false impression” being created by Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Tika Ram Jully regarding the state’s financial status, asserting, “We are not facing any financial crisis.”

Rajasthan State Finance Commission Chairman Arun Chaturvedi has categorically rejected the “false impression” being created by Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Tika Ram Jully regarding the state’s financial status, asserting, “We are not facing any financial crisis.”

“There is no financial crisis of any sort in Rajasthan; it is a false impression being created by the opposition Congress, which practises misleading propaganda-based politics”, senior BJP leader and former minister Chaturvedi said.

“The ground reality is that we are quite comfortable on the financial front, with strong fiscal and financial fundamentals,” he said.

During the two-year tenure of the incumbent Bhajan Lal Sharma-led BJP government, the state’s per capita income rose from Rs 1.67 lakh in 2023–24 to Rs 2.02 lakh in 2025–26, while revenue from the state’s share in central taxes doubled to Rs 2.54 lakh crore.

The state has received Rs 19,600 crore from the Centre under the Special Assistance for State Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme in two years, significantly higher than the Rs 15,803 crore received during the previous Congress regime over five years.

The average gross state domestic product (GSDP) growth was 5.3 per cent under the previous regime (2018–23), which has risen to 8.7 per cent under the incumbent government.

Under the current dispensation, the debt burden and budget deficit have also been brought within permissible limits, he said, adding that LoP Jully is, however, using misleading data on key financial parameters to create a false impression regarding the state’s financial condition.

Cabinet Clears Rs.33,660 Crore BHAVYA Scheme to Drive Manufacturing-Led Growth

In a major step to boost industrial development and manufacturing capacity, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Bharat Audyogik Vikas Yojna (BHAVYA), with an outlay of Rs 33,660 crore for the development of 100 plug-and-play industrial parks across the country.

Announcing the decision, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the initiative would “unlock India’s manufacturing potential and drive the nation’s growth story.”

The BHAVYA scheme is aimed at creating world-class industrial infrastructure that emphasizes efficiency, speed, and investor-friendly reforms. It will be implemented in partnership with state governments and private sector players, building on the success of Industrial Smart Cities developed under the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme framework.

“At the heart of BHAVYA is a commitment to ease of doing business,” Vaishnav said. “From streamlined approvals to single-window systems and investor-friendly reforms led by the states, industries can move from intent to production with certainty and speed.”

Under the scheme, industrial parks ranging from 100 to 1,000 acres will be developed with financial support of up to Rs.1 crore per acre for core infrastructure such as internal roads, underground utilities, drainage systems, ICT networks, and administrative facilities. Additional support will be provided for value-added infrastructure, including ready-built factory sheds, built-to-suit units, testing laboratories, and warehousing, along with social infrastructure such as worker housing and essential amenities. Up to 25% of project costs will also be supported for external connectivity.

Projects will be selected through a challenge mode to ensure that only high-quality, reform-oriented, and investment-ready proposals are taken forward. The parks will be designed as sustainable, future-ready ecosystems aligned with the PM GatiShakti principles, enabling seamless multimodal connectivity and efficient last-mile access. Green energy integration, underground utility corridors, and low-maintenance infrastructure are expected to set new benchmarks in industrial efficiency.

The scheme is expected to generate large-scale employment opportunities across manufacturing, logistics, and services while attracting substantial domestic and foreign investment. It will be rolled out across all states and union territories, promoting balanced regional industrialization and strengthening domestic supply chains.

“BHAVYA will benefit a broad spectrum of stakeholders—from manufacturing units, MSMEs, startups, and global investors to workers, logistics providers, service enterprises, and local communities,” Vaishnav said. “This is a transformational step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat, reinforcing our manufacturing capabilities, boosting exports, and laying the foundation for a resilient, inclusive, and globally competitive economy.”

The National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation, under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, will spearhead the implementation of the scheme. NICDC currently oversees 20 projects across 13 states and has played a key role in advancing the plug-and-play industrial park model by providing ready-to-use land, utilities, and approvals to accelerate industrial operations.

With the rollout of BHAVYA, the government aims to accelerate its vision of a Viksit Bharat, driven by manufacturing-led growth, job creation, and investment at scale.

Mandhana credits team effort, preparation for 2025 World Cup triumph

Smriti Mandhana capped off a stellar season by being named Best International Cricketer (Women) at the BCCI Naman Awards, reflecting on a year marked by both personal milestones and India’s triumph on the global stage.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Smriti Mandhana capped off a stellar season by being named Best International Cricketer (Women) at the BCCI Naman Awards, reflecting on a year marked by both personal milestones and India’s triumph on the global stage.

The India vice-captain looked back on a campaign highlighted by the team’s ICC Women’s ODI World Cup victory, choosing to emphasise collective success over individual accolades.

“It’s been a great year. Again, I can’t really mention a lot about my own performance because of the way we played the World Cup and winning the World Cup, that was pretty special. But for me individually as well, it was a great year in terms of doing what I could for the team and I’m happy that I could contribute to that,” Mandhana said in a BCCI video.

She also underlined India’s broader resurgence across formats, pointing to a remarkable phase for both the men’s and women’s teams. “As I mentioned in the speech, four World Cups and one Champions Trophy, that’s pretty amazing. And for Indian cricket, we had a few years where there was no World Cup, and a lot of people had a lot of things to say. But to come back in the last two years and doing what the Indian cricket has done, it’s just amazing. And just to be part of the evening and celebrating all the teams, it’s just amazing.”

Mandhana credited the groundwork laid behind the scenes for the team’s success, highlighting the importance of preparation and administrative support. She specifically acknowledged the role played by Jay Shah in elevating the women’s game, particularly through initiatives like the Women’s Premier League. “If you want to do something special, you want to go on to win the World Cup. It doesn’t just happen in that World Cup. The preparation has to start. And for us, to be fair, Jay (Shah) sir has been just amazing in the last three years, four years from the time he’s come and he’s got WPL. WPL has really changed the way women’s cricket has been played. And again, an equal pick in terms of the match fees. And, smaller things, more than all those things.”

She further stressed the role of improved infrastructure and support systems in building a championship-winning side. “Just the kind of support staff was provided, the kind of facilities which were provided, whatever was asked was given. So when you do those sort of things, those things right, the result comes. And the 19 women’s winning the World Cup and as well as WPL creating stars and then us going on to win the World Cup. That’s just the start of something really great,” Mandhana said.

Gill eyes WTC Final push after landmark 2025 season

Shubman Gill capped off a stellar 2025 season by clinching the prestigious Polly Umrigar Award for Best International Cricketer (Men) at the BCCI Naman Awards, but the India Test captain has already shifted his focus towards guiding the team to the ICC World Test Championship Final.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Shubman Gill capped off a stellar 2025 season by clinching the prestigious Polly Umrigar Award for Best International Cricketer (Men) at the BCCI Naman Awards, but the India Test captain has already shifted his focus towards guiding the team to the ICC World Test Championship Final.

Gill described the accolade as a special milestone in his career, particularly given the legacy associated with the award. “Obviously, it feels quite amazing to be recognised among cricketers, among the legends and idols that have won this award before me. It’s truly a great honour every time you step on the field to represent your country in a sport that I’ve spent my entire life playing, and to do well in that sport and be recognised by the BCCI is an immense honour,” he said in a BCCI video.

Reflecting on India’s journey over the past year, Gill highlighted the team’s resilience, especially during the England tour where they bounced back strongly after an early setback. “I think it’s been an amazing journey so far. Going into the England series and coming back to draw the series from where we were after the first Test match, and even after that, playing in the West Indies and the Asia Cup it’s been a truly great year,” he noted.

Looking ahead, the 26-year-old underlined the importance of a demanding Test calendar, with key series against Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Australia likely to shape India’s chances in the World Test Championship. India are currently placed sixth, with four wins and a draw from nine matches, making the road to the final a crucial objective.

“We’ve got some really crucial Test series coming up. Hopefully we are able to win most of our matches and qualify for the finals,” he said.

Gill credited the collective effort of the team’s support system, including head coach Gautam Gambhir and the wider coaching staff, for building a fearless unit. “It’s efforts by everyone, whether it’s Gauti bhai, the batting coach, bowling coach, fielding coach; they all work tirelessly to make this group what it is today. That’s why we are recognised as one of the most fearless teams in the world, and wherever we go, we are looked upon as favourites. That tag doesn’t come easy,” he added.

He also acknowledged the role played by the Board of Control for Cricket in India and former secretary Jay Shah, the current ICC chairman, in strengthening infrastructure and player support systems.

“The support that we have got from the BCCI, especially Jay bhai and all the office bearers, has been great. The initiatives they’ve taken to take our cricket forward have really helped us immensely. Even when I got injured, the training, practice and facilities played a huge role in performance,” Gill said.

On the topic of legacy, Gill emphasised a team-first approach, particularly in the longest format. “I don’t really focus on legacy that much, but we want to be looked upon, especially in red-ball cricket, as a team that doesn’t give up easily. We want to instil that kind of character in all players,” he explained.

Gill had been in prolific run with the bat in 2025, especially in the longest format. He amassed 754 runs in five Tests against England at an average of 75.40, including four centuries and a highest score of 269. Overall, he finished as the leading run-scorer in Tests in 2025, tallying 983 runs in nine matches at an average of 70.21.

CCEA approves Rs 6,969-crore four-lane National Highway-927 to boost connectivity and trade in Uttar Pradesh

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs Wednesday approved the construction of a four-lane access-controlled National Highway-927 spanning 101.515 kilometers from Barabanki to Bahraich in Uttar Pradesh, at a cost of Rs 6,969.04 crore.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs Wednesday approved the construction of a four-lane access-controlled National Highway-927 spanning 101.515 kilometers from Barabanki to Bahraich in Uttar Pradesh, at a cost of Rs 6,969.04 crore. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the project will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM).

“The project will significantly improve connectivity, reduce travel time, and enhance road safety in the region,” Vaishnav said, noting that the upgraded corridor is expected to cut travel time between Barabanki and Bahraich to about one hour. He added that the development would also improve fuel efficiency and reduce vehicle operating costs, delivering broad economic benefits.

The existing Barabanki-Bahraich stretch has long been affected by sharp curves, geometric deficiencies, and congestion in built-up areas across both districts. The new access-controlled highway, along with continuous service roads, is designed to bypass major habitations, ensuring smoother traffic flow and safer travel conditions.

The minister said the project will play a crucial role in enhancing connectivity to key economic, social, and logistics nodes across Uttar Pradesh. The corridor will link three economic nodes, two social nodes, and twelve logistics nodes, strengthening multimodal integration in the region. It will also improve access to important transport infrastructure, including the strategically significant Rupaidiha Land Port and nearby airports.

The highway is also poised to become a critical cross-border trade route between India and Nepal via Nepalganj, facilitating faster movement of goods and passengers.

Beyond improving accessibility for remote districts like Bahraich and Shravasti, the project is expected to stimulate agricultural trade, tourism, and cross-border commerce, driving socio-economic growth. The initiative aligns with the government’s PM GatiShakti plan, emphasizing integrated infrastructure development to accelerate growth and enhance logistics efficiency.

Assam: Congress faces another setback ahead of polls, Sarma warns of more

A day after resigning from the Congress, Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi joined the rival BJP in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, citing “persistent internal humiliation and a lack of support from the party leadership”.

VIBHA SHARMA | New Delhi |

A day after resigning from the Congress, Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi joined the rival BJP in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, citing “persistent internal humiliation and a lack of support from the party leadership”. “There is not just one reason. I was feeling suffocated and humiliated,” he said after joining the BJP almost on the eve of the Assam elections scheduled for April 9.

Coming less than a month after former Congress state president Bhupen Kumar Borah jumped ship to the BJP, the move marks another setback for the Congress in Assam. Bordoloi was one of the three Congress MPs from the state and represented the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat.

Sarma, meanwhile, said more Congress leaders were on their way into the BJP, with names like Navajyoti Talukdar—who recently resigned as state vice president—expected soon. “Several leaders will join in the next two to three days. We are finalising our candidate list as well,” he said, adding that Bordoloi’s induction would strengthen the party.

The BJP may field Bordoloi in the upcoming polls.

A committed Congress member since 1975, Bordoloi said his decision to quit was driven by “self-respect” rather than electoral considerations. Accusing the Congress leadership of sidelining him, he said getting a ticket was never an issue with him. “I want to make it very clear that I am in my second term in the Lok Sabha, and there are another three years to go. I could have accepted the humiliation if I wanted to remain an MP, but I decided to leave and work for the people,” he said.

Bordoloi’s exit is part of a string of defections that have weakened the Congress in Assam ahead of the elections. Incidentally, his son, Prateek Bordoloi, has been fielded by the Congress from the Margherita constituency—raising questions about how this family’s political split will manifest electorally. Exits and new entrants are expected to reshape not just the party ranks but also the complexion of the state’s electoral landscape.

Borah, a two-time MLA once seen as a key organisational figure, too, justified his decision by blaming the party leadership. He claimed the party had drifted away from the inclusive legacy of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and alleged a lack of leadership under Gaurav Gogoi.

According to political observers, high-profile defections can influence voter perception and electoral momentum.

Similar crossovers in states like Karnataka (2019), Madhya Pradesh (2020), and Maharashtra (2022) led to dramatic shifts in power, with crossover leaders securing influential positions.

Leaders who joined the BJP over the past decade have helped strengthen the party while weakening the Congress. Such crossovers by senior leaders are often used to send a signal that the original party is weakening or has lost its ideological moorings. Then there are also tangible political benefits. According to sources, Sarma has made it clear that the BJP will take care of Bordoloi’s interests.

Sarma himself left the Congress to become the Chief Minister of Assam as a BJP leader. The move marked one of the most significant shifts in Northeast politics towards right-wing Hindu nationalism, with a focus on illegal immigration. Sarma once said that had he become a Congress Chief Minister, history would have remembered him with disgrace, as he would not have been able to work for Sanatan Dharma or the Assamese people. “I thank Rahul Gandhi for not making me a CM then,” he then quipped.

The Assam Assembly elections for all 126 constituencies will be held in a single phase on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4. The main contest is between the BJP-led NDA, seeking a third consecutive term, and the Congress, aiming to regain power.

Cabinet approves 100 plug-and-play industrial parks across India

The scheme aims to develop world-class industrial infrastructure, unlocking manufacturing potential and driving India’s growth story.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

In a landmark step towards accelerating industrial growth, the Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved the Bharat Audyogik Vikas Yojna (BHAVYA), with an allocation of Rs.33,660 crore for developing 100 plug-and-play industrial parks across the country.

The scheme aims to develop world-class industrial infrastructure, unlocking manufacturing potential and driving India’s growth story.

Building on the success of Industrial Smart Cities developed under the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme (NICDP) framework, BHAVYA will be implemented in partnership with states and private sector players.

At the heart of BHAVYA lies a strong push for deregulation and ease of doing business, with streamlined approvals, effective single-window systems, and investor-friendly reforms led by states.

The scheme will deliver plug-and-play industrial ecosystems, enabling industries to move from intent to production with speed and certainty. With pre-approved land, ready infrastructure, and integrated services, BHAVYA will significantly reduce entry barriers for investors.

Under the scheme, industrial parks ranging from 100 to 1000 acres will be taken up for development. Financial support of up to Rs one crore per acre will be provided for:

· Core infrastructure (internal roads, underground utilities, drainage, common treatment facilities, ICT and administrative systems)

· Value-added infrastructure (ready-built factory sheds, built-to-suit units, testing labs, warehousing)

· Social infrastructure (worker housing and support amenities)

Support for external infrastructure will also be provided up to 25% of the project cost, ensuring seamless connectivity and integration with existing networks.

Project selection will be undertaken through a challenge mode, ensuring that only high-quality, reform-oriented and investment-ready proposals are taken forward.

The industrial parks will be designed as futuristic and sustainable ecosystems aligned with the PM GatiShakti Principles to enable seamless multimodal connectivity and efficient last-mile access

These parks will set new benchmarks in industrial infrastructure, ensuring reliability, reducing inefficiencies, and enhancing productivity across sectors.

BHAVYA is expected to drive large-scale job creation, generating substantial direct and indirect employment across manufacturing, logistics, and services, while catalysing significant investments.

The scheme will extend to all states and Union Territories, creating lakhs of employment opportunities across the country and accelerating industrial growth nationwide.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, expressing her deep distress over the unfortunate fire incident in a multi-story residential building at Palam, informed on Wednesday that a magisterial enquiry has been ordered into the incident to probe the cause and other aspects.

A rescue operation is underway under the supervision of the district administration, Delhi Fire Service, and the Delhi Police.
According to the police, at around 7 am, information regarding the fire in a cloth shop located at Ram Market, Palam was received at the local police station. The Station House Officer (SHO), along with his staff, rushed to the spot and found the basement, ground floor and the first floor of the building, a cloth and cosmetics outlet, and the second and third floors where the owner’s family resided gutted.

During the rescue operation, a total of 12 people were evacuated from the building, nine of whom, including two men, four women, and three children, were declared dead while three survivors are currently under medical treatment in the hospital.
Legal proceedings are underway in the matter while forensic and crime investigation teams have reached the spot.

A Fire Department official had earlier said that nine members of a family were trapped inside the house when the fire broke out.
Two persons reportedly jumped off the building and were rushed to the hospital with injuries. Not long ago, on March 15, a fire broke out within a cluster of 40 temporary commercial shops near the Chhatarpur Metro Station Delhi.
It was at around 0737 hours following the emergency call, six fire units were dispatched initially to the spot.

As the fire spread rapidly through the materials in the shops that included carpets, shawls, sarees, and various handloom materials, the fire officer concerned signaled for escalation, increasing the deployment of fire units.
The DFS had contained the blaze, while there were no reports of any casualties during the operation.

Speeding youths truck crush three under its wheels in Korba, locals block road in anger

A speeding truck mowed down three young men on a motorcycle and overturned near Nuneera village in Korba’s Pali police station area on Wednesday morning.

Statesman News Service | Raipur |

A speeding truck mowed down three young men on a motorcycle and overturned near Nuneera village in Korba’s Pali police station area on Wednesday morning. The accident triggered violent protests and a road blockade by angry villagers. The victims, all in their twenties, died on the spot. Their bodies remained trapped under the overturned vehicle for nearly an hour before a hydra machine could be arranged to lift the truck.

Local residents who witnessed the crash or arrived moments later described a scene of utter horror. The villagers revealed that the truck was clearly travelling at breakneck speed when the driver lost control. It first hit the motorcycle and then ran over the three riders before flipping over, spilling coal all over the road.

“The way the truck was going, it was obvious something bad would happen. These heavy vehicles don’t care about anyone on the road. The three didn’t even get a second to react,” said a shopkeeper from a nearby village who reached the spot hearing the deafening sound of the crash.

As news spread, people from surrounding areas began gathering at the site. What started as a crowd of curious onlookers soon turned into an agitated mob. Villagers alleged that such accidents keep happening because of reckless driving and demanded immediate arrest of the truck driver, who fled the scene after the incident.

The irate locals blocked both sides of the road which lead to long traffic jams. Vehicles could be seen lined up for kilometres as commuters were left stranded. Police from Pali station reached the spot and tried to calm the crowd. They assured the locals of that strict action would be taken.

It took considerable effort from the police to convince people to allow the rescue operation. A hydra machine was called in to lift the truck, and after much struggle, the bodies were finally pulled out. The motorcycle was completely mangled, beyond recognition.

One of the deceased was identified as Om Prakash, son of Mangalu Singh Gond, a resident of Potapani village under Pali police station. Officials said that they were trying to ascertain the identity of the other two victims. The truck driver is absconding, and police have registered a case and launched a search for him.

The incident has left the families shattered. Relatives of the victims reached the spot and their wails could be heard from a distance. Local residents have expressed solidarity with the families and demanded compensation from the government.

It is noteworthy that this is not the first time such an accident has occurred on this stretch. Locals said that heavy vehicles, particularly coal laden trucks, frequently speed through the area, and accidents have become a routine affair. They urged the administration to install speed breakers and enforce traffic rules more strictly.

In a separate incident earlier in the day, at least 10 children were injured as a school van taking them to school overturned in neighbouring Janjgir-Champa district. The van, reportedly being driven by the school principal in the absence of the regular driver, collided with a stationary tractor and flipped over. The injured children and a woman teacher were rushed to the district hospital. Police said they are investigating the matter.

PM Modi: Journey never ends in politics

Observing that in the dynamic field of politics the journey never truly ends, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the future always holds new opportunities for seasoned leaders.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Observing that in the dynamic field of politics the journey never truly ends, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the future always holds new opportunities for seasoned leaders.

Addressing retiring members of the Rajya Sabha, the PM said, “In politics, there are no full stops; your experience and contribution will forever remain a part of the nation’s life.”

Expressing heartfelt gratitude for the chance to honour the retiring members, he noted that such occasions allow the House to rise above party lines and share a common sentiment.

PM Modi remarked that whether the members return or move into broader social service, their accumulated experience remains an asset to the nation.

Highlighting the best contributions of the outgoing members, he suggested that the new generation of MPs should look to veterans like H D Deve Gowda, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Sharad Pawar as role models.

He also praised Deputy Chairman Harivansh for his soft-spoken conduct and his ability to maintain the House’s trust while handling complex crises. Such dedicated service reflects a deep commitment to the responsibilities entrusted by society. “There is much to learn from these senior leaders about staying entirely committed to the responsibilities given by society,” the PM noted.

Reflecting on the changing traditions of the House, PM Modi remarked that while the 24×7 media environment has made everyone more conscious, the legacy of humour and wit remains an essential part of parliamentary life. He highlighted that the departure of a group every two years allows for a continuous exchange of knowledge, ensuring that the House’s rich legacy is preserved by the incoming members.

He observed that this institutional continuity is a significant advantage that strengthens the democratic process. “The legacy here is a continuous process that enriches our parliamentary system,” remarked the Prime Minister.

Highlighting the unique institutional value of the Rajya Sabha, the PM pointed out that the parliamentary system gains immense strength from the concept of a “second opinion.” He noted that the transition of decisions between the two Houses adds a critical new dimension to the legislative process, ensuring more refined outcomes for the country.

This democratic heritage, according to him, fosters a sense of openness and thoroughness in national decision-making. “This second opinion is a massive contribution to our democracy that we must cherish,” said the PM.

He pointed out that the retiring cohort holds the rare distinction of having served in both the old and the new Parliament buildings during their tenure. He remarked that being part of the historic transition to the new House would serve as a fresh and significant memory in their public service careers.

Modi described the House as a “Great Open University” that provides members with a unique education in the complexities of national life.

Iranian Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib killed in overnight strikes

The assassination of yet another top Iranian leader came hours after Ali Larijani, who served as Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, was killed on Monday night.

Statesman News Service | NEW DELHI |

In yet another blow to the top Iranian leadership, Israel on Wednesday claimed that the country’s Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib, who was targeted in overnight strikes, has been killed.

In a statement, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said, “Last night Iran’s Intelligence Minister Khatib was also eliminated.”

Shortly after his claim, Iran also confirmed the killing of its intelligence minister.

The assassination of yet another top Iranian leader came hours after Ali Larijani, who served as Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, was killed on Monday night.

Larijani, a close associate of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, was targeted alongside his son, who has also reportedly died in the attack.

Additionally, Brigadier General Gholamreza Soleimani, the head of the Basij forces, was also killed in what Iranian state media called an “American-Zionist enemy” attack. Soleimani had led the internal security force for six years and was considered a key figure in the military response.

Top Iranian leaders killed in US-Israeli strikes

Major General Mohsen Darebaghi, deputy chief of logistics and industrial research, police intelligence chief Gholamreza Rezaian, and Major General Bahram Hosseini Motlagh, plans and operations chief, were among the other prominent Iranian leaders killed in the US and Israeli strikes.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ trailer breakdown: New suit, new enemies, and a life nobody remembers

Peter Parker is starting over after a life-changing sacrifice that erased him from everyone’s memory. The new trailer teases fresh faces, returning villains, and a much darker journey ahead.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is back… but this time, nobody remembers him. And honestly? That might be the most heartbreaking twist yet.

After years of waiting, Tom Holland has finally swung back into action in the first trailer of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, and things look very different in Peter Parker’s world.

A lonely hero returns to the big screen

The fourth solo Spider-Man film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is all set to release on July 31, bringing Holland back in his iconic suit. This marks his first solo outing since ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, the massive blockbuster that shook the multiverse and fans alike.

That 2021 film didn’t just break hearts. It broke records too, earning over $1.9 billion worldwide. It also gave fans a nostalgic treat by bringing back earlier Spider-Men played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield into the MCU.

But now, ‘Brand New Day’ is starting fresh. And it’s not all sunshine and swinging.

What changed after ‘No Way Home’?

If you remember emotional ending of ‘No Way Home’, Peter Parker made the ultimate sacrifice. To fix the chaos caused by Doctor Strange’s spell, which accidentally pulled villains like Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus into his universe, Peter chose to erase himself from everyone’s memory.

Yes, everyone forgot who he is.

That includes his girlfriend MJ, played by Zendaya, and his best friend Ned, played by Jacob Batalon. Just like that, Peter is completely alone.

Still grieving the loss of Aunt May (played by Marisa Tomei), Peter quietly steps back into his role as Spider-Man, this time wearing a more comic-accurate red-and-blue suit.

New faces, old enemies, and bigger chaos

The new film isn’t just about Peter’s emotional reset. It’s also bringing in a mix of familiar and fresh characters.

Returning to the MCU are Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk and Jon Bernthal as the Punisher. That alone hints at a much bigger and possibly darker story.

Fans will also see the return of Scorpion, played by Michael Mando, who first appeared in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’.

And then come the new entries: Sadie Sink, Tramell Tillman, Liza Colón-Zayas, and Marvin Jones II, who will play the powerful gangster Tombstone.

“Choli Ke Peeche did it first… so why the outrage now?” that’s the question lighting up the internet after a fresh song dropped and chaos followed.

The storm began with “Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke”, a track from the upcoming Kannada film ‘KD: The Devil’. And right at the center of it all? A fiery defence from filmmaker Prem’s wife, former actor Rakshitha.

A song drops… and sparks fly

The moment “Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke” hit the internet, it grabbed attention for all the wrong reasons. It got slammed.

Viewers and critics called out the lyrics as vulgar and inappropriate. Social media quickly turned into a battlefield, with many questioning why such content is still being created.

But while outrage grew louder, Rakshitha stepped in, and she didn’t hold back.

Rakshitha hits back: “One song doesn’t define him”

In a detailed and emotional response, Rakshitha defended her husband, director Prem, and his creative choices.

She made one thing clear: judging an entire filmmaker based on one song is unfair.

According to her, a single track cannot define Prem’s credibility as a writer or director. She pointed out that ups and downs at the box office are normal and should not be used to dismiss someone’s talent or hard work.

Rakshitha also addressed the tone of criticism online. She agreed that audiences absolutely have the right to question creative decisions. But she drew a firm line at personal attacks.

In her words, asking “why” is valid. But abusing someone? Not acceptable.

She brought up iconic Bollywood songs like “Choli Ke Peeche” and “Dreamum Wakeupum”, tracks that were also considered bold or provocative when they released.

According to her, the film industry has always had suggestive songs. From lyrics to visuals, nothing about this trend is new. She even pointed out that many films openly depict violence and sexual themes today without facing such intense backlash.

So why is one song suddenly such a big deal?

She admitted she’s not justifying everything, but she clearly believes the reaction is disproportionate.

‘Prem humare sath, shadi Modi sahab ke sath’: Congress chief Kharge’s jibe at HD Deve Gowda leaves Rajya Sabha in splits | WATCH

Addressing the House during the ongoing session, Kharge recalled his long association with Deve Gowda before taking a dig at the former PM for his decision to join the BJP-led NDA alliance.

Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday took a “bewafa” jibe at former Prime Minister and retiring Rajya Sabha MP HD Deve Gowda, leaving the House, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in splits.

Addressing the House during the ongoing session, Kharge recalled his long association with Deve Gowda before taking a dig at the former PM for his decision to join the BJP-led NDA alliance.

“I have known Deve Gowda for more than 54 years, and I have worked with him a lot,” he said, adding, “Later, I don’t know what happened. ‘Wo prem humare saath kiye, shaadi Modi sahab ke sath’.”

His remarks triggered a wave of laughter in the House, and even Prime Minister Modi was left amused. Deve Gowda’s JDS was an alliance partner of the Congress in Karnataka during their government in 2018-19. However, the JDS broke its alliance to join the BJP-led NDA in 2023.

Kharge also asserted that those in politics and public life “neither get tired nor retire” because of their passion for serving the country.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also thanked the retiring MPs for their contributions and wished them well for their future endeavours. Modi also reminded the retiring leaders that there is no full stop in politics.

“Discussions take place on various issues in the House, and every member plays a unique role in them. In moments like these, a common sense of respect is generated, rising above party lines. To the leaders who are leaving the House after the end of their tenure, I want to say that there is no full stop in politics. The future is waiting for you. Your experience and contribution will always be remembered,” the PM said.

He said that the newly elected MPs need to learn from senior leaders such as HD Deve Gowda, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Sharad Pawar, who have spent more than half their lives in Parliamentary work.

“HD Deve Gowda, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Sharad Pawar are senior leaders who have spent more than half of their lives in parliamentary work. Newly elected MPs should learn from them,” he said.

HD Deve Gowda, Ramdas Athawale, Priyanka Chaturvedi, Tiruchi Siva, Amarendra Dhari Singh, and Abhishek Manu Singhvi are among the 37 retiring MPs.

Nora Fatehi-Sanjay Dutt song row explodes in parliament; Ashwini Vaishnaw says ‘freedom of speech cannot be absolute’

A controversy over Nora Fatehi’s latest song has snowballed from online outrage to a full-blown political debate. With the government stepping in and the track now removed, questions around content limits are getting sharper.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

The drama around Nora Fatehi and Sanjay Dutt’s latest song just got a political twist, and it’s getting louder by the day.

The controversy is about the song “Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke” from the film ‘KD: The Devil’. Soon after its release, the track began trending, but not for the reasons the makers expected.

Viewers quickly called out the song for its bold lyrics and suggestive dance moves. Many on social media felt it crossed a line. Some even described it as “inappropriate” for general audiences, especially younger viewers.

Singer Armaan Malik also joined the criticism, calling the lyrics a “new low.”

Parliament reacts: “Freedom has limits”

As the debate grew, the issue was raised in the Lok Sabha by MP Anand Bhadauria. And that’s when the government stepped in.

Speaking in Parliament, Ashwini Vaishnaw made it clear that freedom of speech is not unlimited. He said it must work within the boundaries of society and culture.

He also revealed that the controversial song has already been banned. His message was firm: creative freedom comes with responsibility.

According to him, the Constitution allows reasonable restrictions on free speech, and those rules must be respected.

“Ready for strict action,” says government

Vaishnaw didn’t stop there. He warned that in today’s fast-moving digital world, content spreads quickly, and that can have serious impact.

He stressed the need to protect vulnerable groups, especially children, women, and disadvantaged communities. If needed, the government is ready to take strict action to control harmful content.

Makers pull back amid legal heat

As criticism poured in, legal complaints were also filed demanding a ban on the song. The argument? It could harm public decency and negatively influence minors.

Facing mounting pressure, the makers reportedly removed the track from YouTube. This move came as a clear attempt to calm the storm. But the debate was already out in the open.

This controversy has once again opened up a big question in Bollywood: how far is too far?

Govt boosts LPG production by 40%, offers 10% extra supply to states

Government added that crude oil availability remains stable and refineries across the country are operating at full capacity, ensuring an uninterrupted fuel supply.

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on Wednesday announced a significant rise in domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) output, stating that production has increased by 40%. Also, the central government has offered states and Union Territories an additional 10% allocation of commercial LPG. The move is aimed at strengthening supply and supporting a long-term shift from LPG to piped natural gas (PNG).

According to the Ministry, states that facilitate this transition will be eligible for the extra allocation. “The Government of India has offered all States/UTs an additional 10% allocation of commercial LPG, provided they can help in the long-term transition from LPG to PNG,” it said.

Officials stated that allocation orders for commercial LPG have already been issued by nearly 15 states and Union Territories. Supply has been ensured across the country, with authorities emphasising that distribution networks remain functional.

Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary (Marketing & Oil Refinery), Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, said, “Regarding commercial LPG supply, allocation orders have been issued by nearly fifteen states and union territories. Commercial LPG has been supplied to all states…”

‘LPG issue is still worrisome’

Despite the improved supply situation, officials acknowledged ongoing challenges. The Joint Secretary said the “LPG issue is still worrisome.”

Highlighting the areas of concern, the official said, “There is an improvement in online booking. But it is also true that there are long lines at distributors.”

Inspections intensified to check irregularities

To address supply issues and curb malpractices, oil marketing companies (OMCs) have stepped up enforcement measures. Over 2,300 surprise inspections were carried out at LPG distributor points yesterday.

Additional inspections have also been conducted at LPG retail outlets and distributorships. The ministry urged citizens to rely only on official information and avoid rumours.

‘Crude availability adequate’

The government also reassured the public on fuel pricing and availability. Officials confirmed that there has been no increase in petrol and diesel prices so far.

“We have sufficient stocks of aviation turbine fuel, and no price increase has been made by the oil marketing companies,” the Ministry said.

It clarified that crude oil availability remains stable and refineries across the country are operating at full capacity, ensuring an uninterrupted fuel supply.
