Civilians assisting cops in managing queues at banks, ATM

PTI | New Delhi |

Over 250 people joined hands with police personnel in
managing long queues, waiting outside banks and ATMs to get their demonetised
Rs.500/1000 currency notes, as part of Delhi Police’s ‘Police Mitra’ initiative
launched on Saturday by Commissioner Alok Kumar Verma.

The civilians–mainly farmers, housewives, self-employed
individuals, jhuggi dwellers, social workers, retired officials, students,
advocates, ex-servicemen–came forward to help police in managing crowd in the
southwestern range.

Varma hailed ‘Police Mitras’ for accepting this additional
responsibility of assisting Delhi Police in various police duties like crime
prevention, crowd management, traffic management, safety of women, children and
senior citizens etc.

He also appreciated them for their proactive role in
assisting police, in the last few days, during the ongoing demonetisation
facilitation arrangements at banks, ATMs, post offices and petrol pumps.

In the southwestern range, comprising west and southwest
districts, 294 civilians including 49 women, have been deputed outside banks
and ATMs which are being thronged by people after the Centre demonetised Rs 500
and Rs 1000 currency notes.

“West and southwest districts have 166 and 128 ‘Police
Mitras’ respectively. The scheme was formally launched on Saturday but they have been
helping our staff for the last few days.

They helped in pacifying people in queues,” Joint
Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Dependra Pathak said.

The Southwest range is the first to roll out the initiative
which other districts are to follow in the next few weeks. Delhi Police
Commissioner had last month issued standing orders to implement the initiative.

Under the initiative, every police station will have
civilian volunteers, whose number will depend on the area, and they will help
police in crime prevention and establishing a better public-police interface.

Those with “good social record” will be enrolled.

Their job will be to help police in addressing issues like
drug addiction, maintaining communal harmony in the area.

The idea was suggested by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at
the Directors General of Police and Inspectors General conference last year
where he had stressed that police forces should work on bridging the gap
between them and the society.

Cash crunch to hit economic activity; GDP growth to fall

Statesman News Service | New Delhi |

The cash crunch following the scrapping of high value currency is likely to impact the GDP growth, experts say. The growth in 2017-18 is likely to fall to 5.8 per cent from an estimated 7.3 per cent as economic activity slows down after demonetisation.

“The way things are right now, economy will be under pressure and there will be an impact on the growth due to demonetisation. It will take at least 2-3 months for the economy to stabilise,” former RBI deputy governor KC Chakraborty said, pointing out that replacing old notes with new ones will take time.

A total of 14 lakh crore, 86 per cent of the value of the currency in circulation became useless after Nov 8 that led to a cash crunch and given current printing capacity it may take a few months to print replacement currency.

“Downturn has already set in with businesses getting adversely impacted. Small scale industries as well as big businesses and services have got hit. And now as the middle class postpones their purchases, the demand will decline further, impacting production and investments, resulting in low growth,” JNU Professor Arun Kumar said, adding that once the downturn sets in it takes it takes time to become normal.

According to a report from brokerage house Ambit Capital, from October-December 2016 until October-December 2019, Ambit Capital expects a strong 'formalisation effect' to play out. “We expect this dynamic to crimp GDP growth in India in FY18 as well and hence we cut our FY18 GDP growth estimate to 5.8 percent from 7.3 percent,” the report said.

The demonetisation move is expected to disrupt economic activity in the short term, especially those segments where cash-based transactions are the norm like real estate, unsecured lending, real estate construction services and building materials.

Half of the non-tax paying businesses in the informal sector that forms 40 per cent share will become unviable and cede market share to their organised sector counterparts, leading to low growth, the report states.

“While in the near-term, we expect these businesses to suffer, over the next couple of years the strongest players in these sectors will gain market share as competition from unorganised players reduces,” the report adds.

Giroud strike ensures Manchester United, Arsenal share spoils

Oliver Giroud’s 89th minute header denied the Manchester United a morale-boosting win.

Prithviraj Dev | New Delhi |

Substitute Olivier Giroud rose high to head home a late equaliser to ensure Arsenal managed to hold Manchester United to a 1-1 draw in a high-octane English Premier League clash on Saturday.
The hosts will feel the result was akin to a defeat, such was their dominance in the final third of the pitch. In fact, United goalkeeper David de Gea didn't have a single save to make before Giroud’s 89th minute header.
United had the vast majority of chances as Jose Mourinho’s men executed his plan almost perfectly, stifling the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil without much difficulty.
A surprise considering the fact that Arsenal have been free-scoring of late and with a strong line-up with just Carl Jenkinson replacing regular Hector Bellerin, one almost feared for United. Sanchez, so often their difference-maker, was clearly not match-fit, playing with a heavily bandaged right thigh.
The sides went into the interval deadlocked, and Petr Cech was the man to thank for that fact, making two crucial saves to keep his side in the game. First Juan Mata’s low shot was tipped around the corner, and later Anthony Marital’s curler was tipped over the bar.
United weren't to be denied after the break however, dominating their opponents in a similar fashion as they did in the first period.
Paul Pogba who gave a composed performance in the middle of the pitch, released the energetic Ander Herrera on the wing and the Spaniard’s cut-back was guided into the back of the net with precise accuracy by the onrushing Mata in the 68th minute.
No less than what United deserved and while they came close to adding a second twice after their opener, somehow they could not finish the game off. Marcos Rojo in particular, was guilty of an easy miss, somehow unable to keep a free head on target.
And United were left to rue their profligacy as Arsenal started to press for an equaliser.
Arsene Wenger threw on the mercurial Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and the burly Olivier Giroud to force the result and the two combined with devastating effect in the 89th minute, grabbing a equaliser which leaves their title credentials intact.
Chamberlain skipped past a tiring Marcus Rashford on the wing and sent in a doozy of a cross and Giroud responded in kind with a well-placed header which left David de Gea with no chance.
United’s inability to finish the game off will worry Mourinho, as it is not the first time this season they have conceded a late equaliser. They remain in sixth place but could slip to seventh should Everton beat Swansea later on Saturday.
Arsenal will go back to London content with a result which feels like a win and rise to third in the table, albeit provisionally considering they have played a game extra than fourth-placed Manchester city.

Sushma Swaraj under observation at AIIMS

IANS | New Delhi |

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who has suffered kidney failure and is waiting for a transplant, on Saturday was under close observation of a team of top doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences for her high sugar levels.
According to doctors, the minister needed to be monitored as her sugar level was mostly on the high side.
Earlier, on Sushma Swaraj’s choosing, the doctors had allowed her to come to the hospital every morning and return home in the evening after undergoing the required tests.
However, as her diabetes levels are high she has been admitted again to a special ward on the ground floor of the Cardio Thoracic and Neuro Sciences (CN) Centre of AIIMS, doctors said.
“She is under the close observation of a team of doctors constituted to conduct her treatment. Till the time the transplant is performed after getting a suitable donor it is important that the minister (Swaraj) is in a normal condition,” a senior doctor, familiar with the minister’s treatment updates, told IANS.
Sources said that Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda visited Sushma Swaraj on Friday evening and inquired about her health.
The team of top doctors constituted for the treatment of Sushma Swaraj includes, Head of Endocrinology Nikhil Tandon, Head of Pulmonary Medicine Randeep Guleria, Chief of Cardio Thoracic and Head of Nephrology Sandeep Mahajan.
According to the doctors, the minister will have to wait at least 15 days more till a perfect matching donor is found. The chances of having a donor within blood relation has been ruled out as the minister’s daughter is also a diabetic.
Several people on social media platforms have voiced interest in donating their kidney to Sushma Swaraj, after she tweeted on Wednesday about her kidney failure and the need to undergo a kidney transplant.
A parliamentarian from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Rayapati Sambasiva Rao, has also expressed his desire to donate his kidney.
In a letter to Sushma Swaraj, Rao said: “I am very sorry to hear about your health problems and that you have been diagnosed with renal failure. As AIIMS doctors have advised you for the renal transplant at the earliest, Madam I shall be very grateful (if) you kindly accept my offer for donation of my kidney to you for transplant.”
The 73-year-old MP hails from Narasaraopet constituency in Andhra Pradesh.
The minister, who was admitted on Nov 7, is undergoing dialysis whenever required.

Shatrughan Sinha finds John, Sonakshi ‘made for each other’

IANS | Mumbai |

Actress Sonakshi Sinha says her father and veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha has lauded her performance in Force 2 and found her and actor John Abraham as “made for each other”.
When John was asked about the best reaction he received so far, the actor replied that he got it from Sonakshi’s father.
Sonakshi added that her father watched the Delhi screening of Force 2, which also stars Tahir Raj Bhasin.
“He took his friends and the police commissioner with him. They all loved it (Force 2). Until now, my dad never called any of my co-stars and talked to them… But this time he did and even said that our (John and Sonakshi) jodi (pair) is made for each other. He was very happy and proud of the film. That’s enough for me,” she said.
The 29-year-old actress says Shatrughan also took the film’s director Abhinay Deo’s number and called him too.
“I felt wonderful when Shatrughan Sinha called me even before he called Sonakshi,” an elated Deo said.
Sonakshi got a call from actor Akshay Kumar.
“Akshay is quite impressed with the kind of action sequences we did in the film.”
