S Korean President faces impeachment vote

IANS | Seoul |

South Korean President Park Geun-hye faces impeachment on Friday, with lawmakers due to vote on dismissing her from office.
Park has been embroiled in a political scandal that has sparked massive protests and calls for her resignation after her close confidante, Choi Soon-sil, was accused of using the President’s connections to gain influence and money.
Prosecutors said the scandal-hit President had a “considerable” role in the alleged corruption, which she has denied, BBC reported.
Park has resisted calls to step down, insisting that she would leave the decision up to South Korean parliament.
The National Assembly introduced the impeachment motion on Thursday, setting up a likely vote on Friday, Yonhap news agency reported.
The impeachment will go through if at least two-thirds of the assembly vote in favour of it.
The assembly is dominated by opposition parties and independents who want the President dismissed — but they need at least 28 more votes from Park’s Saenuri party for the impeachment.
According to reports, there may be enough Saenuri dissenters who would vote for it. Park said this week that she would accept the vote’s outcome.
If parliament votes for impeachment, Park would not be immediately removed. She would only be suspended from office, with the Prime Minister taking over her duties.
The decision would still need final approval from the nine-judge constitutional court, which would have six months to deliberate.
If it upheld the decision, only then Park would be dismissed. She would become the first sitting South Korean President to be deposed in the country’s democratic era.
At the heart of the scandal is Park’s links to Choi, who has already been charged with coercion and abuse of power.
Choi is accused of using her links with Park to pressure some of the country’s biggest corporations into donating to two foundations controlled by her, who allegedly siphoned off funds for her personal use.
On Tuesday the corporations’ leaders were grilled by MPs in a rare parliamentary enquiry on whether they made the donations in exchange for political favours.
Park has also come under fire for allowing Choi inappropriate access to government decisions, something which she has repeatedly apologised for.
The scandal has ignited public fury in South Korea, where tens of thousands of people have staged demonstrations in Seoul in recent weeks calling for the President to step down.

Juan Manuel Santos to receive Nobel Peace Prize

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos travelled to Norway to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, together with representatives of the thousands of victims of the country’s half-century conflict, the media reported on Friday.
Santos on Thursday invited “some 40 people, many of them close friends and relatives, but also (peace) negotiators and about 10 representatives of the victims of the conflict”, Xinhua news agency reported.
“I will accept the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of all Colombians, but especially the victims of the conflict,” Santos said.
Among those accompanying the President were Pastora Mira Garcia, a community activist who lost much of her family and still helped both the victims and those fighting the civil war, Leiner Palacios, a survivor of massacre, Fabiola Perdomo, a widow of a deputy who was kidnapped and killed by the rebels, and Ingrid Betancourt, a former presidential candidate and high-profile kidnapped victim.
According to the presidency, besides her personal pains, “Mira’s struggle for others, her social activism, her infinite capacity for forgiveness and reconciliation (to the point of providing shelter and first aid to the attacker of one of her relatives)… make her stand out among those invited to the Nobel” ceremony.
Santos was awarded the Nobel prize for his role in the peace process to end the decades long civil war in Colombia.
He and the leader of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, Rodrigo Londono, signed a revised peace agreement in November, in efforts to end the country’s half-century conflict, which has left 220,000 people dead, and millions of people homeless.

Bani J storms out of ‘Bigg Boss’ press conference

PTI | Mumbai |

Unable to keep up with model Lopamudra Raut’s constant taunts during a press conference inside the Bigg Boss house, VJ-actress Bani J walked out of the meet leaving everyone shocked.
Tension between Bani and Lopamudra is not new and it took an ugly turn when latter interrupted Bani every time she answered questions posed to her, at a press meet yesterday at the Bigg Boss house.
When asked if Bani is insecure of her, Lopa said that is definitely the case, adding that it may be because “she considers me a big competition.”
However, the former Roadies-host shrugged it off saying the model is “too immature” and not worthy of any competition.
Listening to her answer, Lopa started taunting her, which made Bani visibly irritated.
The nail in the coffin was a scribe’s question that whether the VJ and Lopa will fight it out like Gauahar Khan and Tanisha Mukherjee competed against each other in Bigg Boss season seven.
“It is a huge compliment that you compared me with Gauhar, because she had a big heart. I am here at ‘Bigg Boss’ only because of her,” Bani said.
Lopamudra, however, interrupted her again, which left Bani completely miffed.
The VJ stood up and said she does not want to be a part of any conference where she is not even allowed to talk to the media for “even two minutes” properly.
Bani then walked out of the event almost choked up.
Later, the VJ broke down in the house and locked herself in the bathroom.

Michael Jordan wins China court ruling after years-long case

Numerous Chinese companies sell products with names that sound suspiciously similar to well-known foreign brands.

AFP | Beijing |

China's highest court on Thursday ruled in favour of basketball legend Michael Jordan at the culmination of a years-long case over use of the Chinese rendering of his globally-known name and trademark.
The former NBA star has been in dispute with a sportswear company based in southern China called Qiaodan Sports since 2012.
He had previously argued unsuccessfully in Beijing courts that they had used his Chinese name “Qiaodan” by which he has been known since he gained widespread popularity in the mid-1980s, his old jersey number 23 and basketball player logo to make it look like he was associated with their brand.
The Supreme People's Court on Thursday announced that it was overturning two rulings by Beijing courts against Jordan from 2014 and 2015 that had found there wasn't sufficient evidence to support the athlete's allegations over the use of his image.
It also ordered the trademark bureau to issue a new ruling over the use of the Chinese characters in the brand name “Qiaodan.”
Pronounced “CHEEOW-dan,” it is the transliteration of “Jordan” in Mandarin.
The court's judgment was broadcast live on its website.
Jordan said in a statement that millions of Chinese fans and consumers had always known him by the name Qiaodan and that he was happy the court had recognized his right to protect his name.
“Chinese consumers deserve to know that Qiaodan Sports and its products have no connection to me. Nothing is more important than protecting your own name, and today's decision shows the importance of that principle,” Jordan said.
In a twist to the legal saga, Qiaodan Sports successfully counter-sued Jordan in 2013 for preventing it from pursuing a stock market listing because of the trademark lawsuit.
The Beijing law firm representing Qiaodan Sports Co Ltd declined to comment. The case reflects the difficulties faced by foreign individuals and companies in protecting their copyrights in China, where domestic firms have long taken a cavalier attitude toward intellectual property.
Numerous Chinese companies sell products with names that sound suspiciously similar to well-known foreign brands, often with only one or two letters changed.

Mumbai Test Day 1: England make promising start

The highlight of the morning session was debutant Keaton Jennings' well-paced half-century.

SNS | New Delhi |

England’s perfect start to the fourth Test was ruined when Ravindra Jadeja got rid of Alastair Cook in his very first over, but the visitors remained in a good position at 117-1 when lunch was called.
The opening duo of captain Cook and debutant Keaton Jennings had put on a 99-wicket stand, before a lapse of concentration on the former’s part ended his innings four runs short of a half-century.
Jennings did get his 50, initially looking a little hesitant but started to grow as he faced more deliveries and looks extremely well-set at 65 not out. With eight boundaries to his name already, he is in sight of a century and the visitors have a battle on their hands if they are to get him out.
Cook for the umpteenth time in his career, was stumped trying to attempt a slog-hit, with Jadeja’s guile fooling him to give the Indians a slight glimmer of hope after a relentless barrage of runs.
Giving Jennings company is Yorkshireman Joe Root (5*).

Pakistan to work closely with Trump administration: Fatemi

IANS | Washington |

Pakistan is looking forward to work closely with the new US administration over regional security and to help resolve the Kashmir issue, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi has said.
He made the remarks in Washington while interacting with the current US administration and as part of reaching out to officials likely to join the incoming Trump administration.
In an interview with NBC News this week, Vice President-elect Mike Pence said Trump intended to be fully engage with both Pakistan and India to promote regional peace. He also suggested that the president-elect could play a role in resolving longstanding international disputes, such as Kashmir.
Talking to the US press, Fatemi emphasised that Pakistan wanted relations between the two countries to further strengthen.
The special assistant stressed that Pakistan could play a significant role in promoting peace and stability not just in Afghanistan but the entire region. Pakistan has confluence of interests with the US and there is a solid track record of both working together over seven decades, he said.
The special assistant underlined the need for a sustained dialogue process between Pakistan and India to resolve their long-standing differences including that of Kashmir.
Fatemi also spoke about the widespread and homegrown uprising in Jammu and Kashmir, which the Indian government has been trying to “suppress using brute force”.
“Over 16,000 Kashmiris have been injured and approximately 600 blinded by using pellet guns. In addition, the number of ceasefire violations have increased during recent months,” he said adding that these violations had targeted innocent civilians, which amount to a “war crime”.

Women empowerment key to social development: Mehbooba

PTI | Jammu |

Stating that empowerment of women is imperative for the development of the society, Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday said the government has launched many schemes and programmes for their welfare.
She said the state Government has flagged women’s welfare as a priority area and efforts are being made to achieve the targets in this regard.
Mehbooba was addressing a public meeting here this afternoon after interacting with members of women Self Help Groups (SHGs) set up under ‘UMEED’ programme under J-K Rural Livelihood Mission.
She said the state government has launched a scheme called Ladli Beti to support and finance the expenses of girl child.
Similarly, the government has introduced women’s police stations in many districts of the state for the speedy disposal of cases of crime against women.
The Chief Minister said the government contemplates to set up a Maternity & Child health centre along a hospital in every area of the state so that women in far flung places don’t have to travel miles for their treatment.
She said recently the government launched a ‘scooty scheme’ for girl students to encourage the meritorious ones and equip them with exclusive transportation.
An exclusive bus service for women was introduced to give the working women and students a secure atmosphere not only at workplace but on roads and in travel also, she added.
Mehbooba complimented the Self Help Group (SHG) members for contributing positively to their families and the society.
She said possibilities would be explored that these SHGs get the requisite market support and their products are sold across the country at good prices.
Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Nirmal Singh in his address termed the ‘Umeed scheme’ as a good beginning for the economic empowerment of rural women.

‘Demonetisation decision not taken with UP Assembly election in mind’

PTI | New Delhi |

Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi Wednesday said the demonetisation decision was not taken with Uttar Pradesh Assembly election in mind but if it becomes the issue, then it would be “best issue” in the polls.
“Many election in Uttar Pradesh had been held in the name of casteism, communalism and this type of narrow issues.
This time at least…Demonetisation has hit the black money holders but the pain is being felt by (Opposition). If this becomes the issue, then I think this would be the best issue…fight against corruption, black money holders,” Naqvi said while responding to a question on 'Agenda Aaj Tak'.
He, however, said the demonetisation decision was not taken keeping in mind the election in Uttar Pradesh and emphasised that people in the country are supporting this initiative in “one voice”.
Congress leader Raj Babbar sought to know from BJP which law in the world prohibits people from withdrawing their own money and said the “politics of discourse” is going on in the country.
He said if the government has really succeeded in unearthing the black money, then it should waive off the loan of farmers and give money to below poverty level people in the country.
Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agarwal questioned the surgical strike by the government, asking what is the use of the operation after which 32 soldiers were killed.

Merkel urges Germans to stick to facts on refugee crime

AFP | Essen |

Chancellor Angela Merkel insisted on Thursday that Germany’s record refugee influx in 2015 had not led to a surge in violent crime, despite a rash of headline-grabbing cases.
Asked about the rape-murder of a German student allegedly committed by a teenage Afghan asylum seeker and the recent arrest of a 31-year-old Iraqi asylum seeker over the sexual assaults of two Chinese students, Merkel urged Germans to stick to the known facts.
“These are terrible isolated incidents,” Merkel told rolling news channel NTV on the sidelines of her CDU party’s annual conference in the western city of Essen.
She called for “tough sentencing” in such cases but said she had faith in “the response of Germany’s rule of law”, adding that general suspicion of refugees was not called for.
“We have looked closely at the crime rate among refugees and the picture is varied. That is also the right answer: that you have to differentiate,” she said.
“The fact that some people want to exploit that is something we have to withstand and defend ourselves against.”
Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere, a close Merkel ally, presented an official report yesterday about crimes committed by refugees and said it showed it was unfair to tar all newcomers with the same brush.
He said that property crimes were elevated among asylum seekers from Georgia, for example, compared to the general population but that the findings showed no such trend among Syrians, who represent a much larger share of the latest influx.
Merkel, who is running for a fourth term in a general election next year, is confronting deep ambivalence among Germans about the arrival since early 2015 of more than one million asylum seekers.
While many have welcomed Merkel’s decision to take in people fleeing war and misery, she has also seen a backlash among those doubtful about the ability of Europe’s top economic power to integrate the newcomers.
A resurgent right-wing populist party, the AfD, has managed to capitalise on such fears, making strong gains in a string of state elections this year.
This week it directly linked Merkel’s liberal border policy to the sex crimes against the three students.

WB house adopts resolution against note ban, Cong, left back

The West Bengal Assembly on Wednesday passed a ruling TMC-piloted resolution against demonetisation.

PTI | Kolkata |

The West Bengal Assembly on Wednesday passed a ruling TMC-piloted resolution against demonetisation, but failed to enlist the support of the Congress and Left Front which are with it at the national level in opposing the exercise undertaken by the Modi government.

Their rivalry with the ruling TMC in state politics prevented the Congress and the Left parties from backing the resolution, which was adopted by a voice vote. Congress and the Left claimed they could not have supported the resolution as TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wanted a roll back of the demonetisation, while they were only protesting against the manner of its implementation.

The TMC government had on Monday brought a resolution to discuss demonetisation which was moved by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee. The discussion on it continued n Wednesday.

Yesterday, the House was adjourned for the day following Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's death.

“An unprecedented situation has evolved due to the directionless leadership of Narendra Modi. We condemn it. I don't support black money,” state's Finance Minister Amit Mitra said while speaking on the motion.

“We all are against black money. But this decision of demonetisation has been taken without any proper planning. It has snapped the entire supply chain in the country and is pushing the country towards recession,” Mitra said.

Speaking on the motion on Monday, Mamata Banerjee had demanded a probe by a Supreme Court judge into the assets bought by the BJP just months before demonetisation was announced. She had also demanded a roll back of the decision.

“We did not support the resolution as they (the TMC government) had demanded a roll back of the decision. Roll back of this decision would lead to a much bigger crisis,” Leader of Opposition Abdul Mannan of Congress later told reporters.

Left Front legislature party leader Sujan Chakraborty said those who themselves are involved in corruption should not talk big about black money.

“We gave amendments but those were not accepted. We are not in favour of roll back of decision. We have reservations over implementation of the decision.

“We wish that people do not suffer because of the decision. Those who themselves are corrupt can't talk big about fighting black money,” Chakraborty told reporters, referring to arch rival TMC some of whose leaders are allegedly involved in the Saradha chit fund scam.

Earlier, speaking on the resolution, Chatterjee appealed to both Congress and CPI(M) to support it in order to put up a united face against demonetisation.

“I would appeal to all of you to support the resolution.

I want that the opposition presents a united face against demonetisation,” he said.

MLA and state BJP President Dilip Ghosh alleged that those opposing demonetisation had a lot of black money.

“Those who have stashed huge amount of black money generated through syndicate (real estate cartel) and chit funds are opposing the decision of demonetisation,” Ghosh said.
