Adele broke her Album of the Year Grammy in two

PTI |

Singer Adele, who emerged as a big winner at the 59th annual Grammys taking home major prizes, broke her Album of the Year trophy in half on stage after she declared that it truly belongs to Beyonce.

While accepting the honour, the 28-year-old star paid tribute to Beyonce, whose album 'Lemonade' was also nominated in the same category, saying the latter was a more deserving winner than her.

"I can't possibly accept this award. The Lemonade album was just so monumental, Beyonce. It was so monumental and well thought-out and beautiful and soul-baring… We appreciate that. All of us artists here adore you. You are our light," Adele said.

The '25' songstress, who also won Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, said backstage that when she heard her name called instead of Queen Bey "a piece of me died inside", reported People magazine.

"I felt like it was her time to win. What the f does she have to do to win Album of the Year?"

However, Beyonce, 35, who was the front-runner in the race with nine nods for Lemonade, could only win in the two categories, including Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best Music Video.

Pakistani Court allows channels to show Indian movies

IANS | Islamabad |

The Lahore High Court has allowed private channels to show Indian movies as per their terms of agreements with Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA).

The court on Monday granted permission in the light of Pemra's 2002 ordinance that television channels were allowed to run Indian films, The News International reported.

Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah issued the order after Leo Communication and others challenged the ban on the broadcast of Indian content on TVs.

The petitioner argued the permission would remain subject to terms and conditions of the licence under the Pemra Ordinance in 2002.

It said the channels should be allowed to broadcast Indian dramas/plays as they fall within the category of "entertainment".

However, the Pemra contested the argument and sought time to establish that "entertainment" did not include Indian dramas and plays.

It said the channels were allowed to run Indian movies as per terms of their licence agreements.

The court has set March 2 for further hearing.

Leo Communication had filed the petition assailing a circular issued by the Pemra on October 19 last year for being ultra vires of the authority's rules and the constitution as well.

The petitioner company said the government was indulging in selective patriotism as Indian movies were allowed to be screened across the country but not on televisions.

On Monday, the rupee had dropped by 14 paise to close at 67.02 on continued demand for the Dollar coupled with its growing strength overseas.

Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex fell 38.20 points, or 0.13 per cent, to 28,313.42 in early trade.

On Valentine’s Day, here are some of those fictional men who made us fall in love with them.

Mr Darcy (Pride and Prejudice)

One of the two central characters of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Mr Darcy is the vintage old school guy whose charm never fades. No matter how modern and outgoing the world becomes, love is the best in old school style.

Christian Grey (Fifty Shades trilogy)

Landon (A Walk to Remember)

Sasikala convicted in corruption case, CM dream shattered

SNS | New Delhi |

In a major setback for AIADMK General Secretary VK Sasikala, the Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday convicted her in a case of disproportionate assets, thus crushing her dream of becoming the next chief minister of Tamil Nadu.

Hours after the apex court ruling, Sasikala, as the party chief, axed acting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and 19 more leaders from the AIADMK. But Panneerselvam refused to give up.

The MLAs backing Sasikala — who wished to take over as Chief Minister before Panneerselvam revolted — and holed up at a resort near here also elected E. Palanisamy as their new legislature party leader.

Palanisamy, the Minister for Public Works, Highways and Minor Ports, lost no time in asking Governor C. Vidayasagar Rao to let him prove his majority in the assembly and form a government.

A Supreme Court division bench of Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose and Justice Amitava Roy set aside a Karnataka High Court order acquitting the three and Jayalalithaa, who died on December 5.

Sasikala cannot contest elections for 10 years, including the four years she will be in jail. She was also fined Rs 10 crore.

The apex court’s verdict came on an appeal by the Karnataka government in the disproportionate assets case involving former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister late J Jayalalithaa,  Sasikala and others.

The appeal was crucial as according to reports, Tamil Nadu Governor C Vidyasagar Rao was waiting for the Judgment in the case before calling Sasikala to form the government and end the ongoing political turmoil in the state.

The Karnataka government has challenged a May 11, 2015 Karnataka High Court order acquitting late Chief Minister J Jayalalithha, Sasikala and her two relatives VN Sudhakaran and Elavarasi for allegedly amassing disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs 66.65 crore during Jayalalithaa's first term as Chief Minister (1991-1996).

The verdict on the Karnataka government's plea was reserved on June 7, 2016.

The high court by its verdict had reversed a September 27, 2014 trial court Judgment which had sentenced Jayalalithaa to four years in jail and imposed a Rs 100 crore fine after a trial that lasted for 18 years.

Sasikala, who was elected General Secretary of AIADMK following the death of Jayalalithaa in December 2016, was elected leader of the legislature party on February 5.

I’m anti-fairytales, says Halle Berry

IANS |

Actress Halle Berry, who has been divorced three times, says she has become anti-fairytales after her split from Olivier Martinez, Eric Benét and David Justice.

Berry said: "I have learned to deal with three failed marriages, which has not been easy, especially when there's children involved. (As) women, we go into marriage thinking it's going to last forever and that this is our prince on a shiny horse.

"That's what fairytales taught me as a kid… and I'm kind of anti-fairytales today. But we go in there with that hope, so when it falls apart it feels like a huge failure and a huge disappointment. I've often felt guilty and responsible. I've suffered a lot of pain and anguish."

However, Berry feels it taught her a lot about herself, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

Speaking in a question and answer at the City Summit event here, she added: "In every one of those situations, as hard – and sometimes embarrassing – as it was, I learned so much about myself.

"All of those relationships were necessary for me. We all come here with lessons that we have to learn and those relationships provided me with lessons that got me to where I am right now. For that, I'm grateful. But it has been hard. It's been a difficult part of my life."

Chinese crew held in India may soon be released

China Daily/ANN | Beijing |

China’s consulate general in Kolkata announced on Monday that the 23 Chinese crew members on a cargo ship detained more than a month ago at India’s Haldia port could probably go home soon.

The freighter Union Demeter, owned by Nanjing Tranvast Holdings, was detained by order of a court in Mumbai in December after the company failed to pay refueling expenses. Soon after the detention, the shipowner declared bankruptcy, leaving the crew members helpless on the ship.

“With the joint efforts of all sides, progress has been made for resolving relevant problems. We believe that the crew members can go back home soon,” the consulate general said on its website.

Consul-General Ma Zhanwu has maintained close contact with the ship’s captain, Dai Xiaosong, about the situation on the ship, and three
diplomats including Cai Zhifeng, deputy consul-general, have boarded the ship to see the crew members, according to the statement.

Indian government authorities said they will take unspecified measures to facilitate the crew members’ return home, the statement said.

The case drew public attention after Captain Dai called Jiangsu News Radio on Sunday to ask for help and said that if there was no other company to take over the cargo ship, the Indian government would not release the crew.

The food, drinking water and fuel supplies on board were nearly used up, he said, adding that the sailors were at high risk for dengue fever.

The sailors told Jiangsu News Radio they haven’t been paid for five months and the total unpaid wages reached 1.5 million yuan (US$218,000).

In a photo circulated on Jiangsu News Radio’s micro blog, the sailors stand on the ship’s deck and hold banners, on which they have written in English: “We need help. We want to home. We want our salary.”

Han Lei, general manager of Yuanteng Shipping Co, which hired the sailors, said the best solution would be for the ship’s owner to pay for the release of the crew and the berth, and then to sell the ship to resolve its financial problem.

But the shipowner has refused to contact the crew’s employer to talk about the issue, said Han, and the cost of berthing the ship at the port
has been in the tens of thousands of dollars per day.

China Daily was unable to reach the ship owner for comment as of press time.

Kong Lingming, a sailor at a shipping company in Quanzhou, Fujian province, said each sailor has insurance based on the Maritime Labour Convention, and the insurance company will pay the sailors and take over the ship if the shipowner continues to refuse to resolve the problem.

However, Kong said, “such a process will take a long time,” and the consulate general’s help will make it possible for the sailors to go home
sooner.
