Selena Gomez in Netherlands to be with The Weeknd

IANS |

Singer-actress Selena Gomez reportedly flew all the way to the Netherlands to watch her rumoured boyfriend and singer The Weeknd perform.

Gomez landed in Amsterdam just twenty four hours before The Weeknd was scheduled to perform in the capital as part of his Starboy: Legend of the Fall Tour, reports dailymail.co.uk.

According to a source, Gomez had jetted over to the Netherlands to watch him perform at the Ziggo Dome in the capital and to support him during the European leg of his tour.

"She flew there to meet up with him. She will be at his show in Amsterdam," the source said.

However with a busy schedule of her own in both her music and TV career, Gomez's visits will only be fleeting.

"She plans on showing up here and there on his tour. She has a ton going on so she can't drop everything, but she will show up on off-days," the source added.

Large Mayan jade pendant with carved inscriptions discovered

PTI | Washington |

In a rare find, scientists have discovered a large piece of carved jade that once belonged to an ancient Maya king, inscribed with a historical text decribing its first owner.

The jewel – a jade pendant worn on a king's chest during key religious ceremonies – was first unearthed in 2015, in Nim Li Punit in southern Belize.

The T-shaped pendant is remarkable for being the second largest Maya jade found in Belize to date, said Geoffrey Braswell, a professor at University of California, San Diego in the US.

"It was like finding the Hope Diamond in Peoria instead of New York," said Braswell, who led the dig.

"We would expect something like it in one of the big cities of the Maya world. Instead, here it was, far from the centre," he said.

The pendant measures 7.4 inches wide, 4.1 inches high and just 0.3 inches thick.

Sawing it into this thin, flat form with string, fat and jade dust would have been a technical feat for the Mayans, researchers said.

The pendant is the only one known to be inscribed with a historical text. Carved into the pendant's back are 30 hieroglyphs about its first owner.

The pendant was "not torn out of history by looters," said Braswell.

"To find it on a legal expedition, in context, gives us information about the site and the jewel that we couldn't have otherwise had or maybe even imagined," he said.

Nim Li Punit is a small site in the Toledo District of Belize. It sits on a ridge in the Maya Mountains, near the contemporary village of Indian Creek.

On the southeastern edge of the ancient Maya zone – more than 400 kilometres south of Chichen Itza in Mexico, where similar but smaller breast pieces have been found – Nim Li Punit is estimated to have been inhabited between AD 150 and 850.

The site's name means "big hat." It was dubbed that, after its rediscovery in 1976, for the elaborate headdress sported by one of its stone figures.

Researchers along with a crew of local people, were excavating a palace built around the year 400 when they found a collapsed, but intact, tomb.

Inside the tomb, which dates to about AD 800, were 25 pottery vessels, a large stone that had been flaked into the shape of a deity and the precious jade pectoral. Except for a couple of teeth, there were no human remains.

The pendant is in the shape of a T. Its front is also carved with a T. This is the Mayan glyph "ik" which stands for "wind and breath."

It was buried,in a curious, T-shaped platform. One of the pots discovered with it, a vessel with a beaked face, probably depicts a Maya god of wind.

Wind was seen as vital by the Maya. It brought annual monsoon rains that made the crops grow. And Maya kings – as divine rulers responsible for the weather – performed rituals according to their sacred calendar, burning and scattering incense to bring on the wind and life-giving rains.

According to the inscription on its back, the pendant was first used in AD 672 in just such a ritual, Braswell said.

Two relief sculptures on large rock slabs at Nim Li Punit also corroborate that use.

In both sculptures, a king is shown wearing the T-shaped pendant while scattering incense, in AD 721 and 731, some 50 and 60 years after the pendant was first worn.

By the year AD 800, the pendant was buried, not with its human owner, it seems, but just with other objects. Braswell believes that it was buried as a dedication to the wind god.

Maya kingdoms were collapsing throughout Belize and Guatemala around AD 800, Braswell said. Population levels plummeted. Within a generation of the construction of the tomb, Nim Li Punit itself was abandoned.

"A recent theory is that climate change caused droughts that led to the widespread failure of agriculture and the collapse of Maya civilisation," Braswell said.

"The dedication of this tomb at that time of crisis to the wind god who brings the annual rains lends support to this theory, and should remind us all about the danger of climate change," he said.

The inscription on the back of the pendant is perhaps the most intriguing thing about it, Braswell said.

The text is still being analysed by researchers, and the Mayan script itself is not yet fully deciphered or agreed upon.

La Liga: Crucial Sunday for big guns

Sunday afternoon sees second-placed FC Barcelona visit Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon stadium.

IANS | Madrid |

Sunday promises to be a vital day of Spain's La Liga football title race as two games, Atletico Madrid-Barcelona and Real Madrid-Villarreal, could go a long way towards deciding who lifts the trophy at the end of the season.

Sunday afternoon sees second-placed FC Barcelona visit Atletico Madrid in the Vicente Calderon stadium with their recent King's Cup semi-final fresh in the memories of both sets of supporters, reports Xinhua news agency.

Barcelona triumphed in the Cup, winning 2-1 in Madrid and holding on for a draw in the Camp Nou, but Atletico will take heart from their display in the second leg of that tie in which they had the Catalans on the ropes for long periods of the game.

That game was a sign of the problems which Barcelona have faced in recent matches with a 0-4 Champions League humiliation in Paris followed up by a fortunate 2-1 win at home to lowly Leganes las Sunday.

A repeat of either of those performances against highly motivated rivals who know that a win could put them back in the title race, would surely lead to another setback, whereas if Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Neymar, Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta are back to their best, Barcelona have a chance of leapfrogging Madrid and piling the pressure on Zinedine Zidane's men.

Wednesday saw Real Madrid waste one of their two games in hand over their rivals as they lost 1-2 in Valencia and they return to the east coast on Sunday night to visit Villarreal, who have the best defensive record in the league.

Not only that, but a win for Barcelona would leave Real Madrid needing to win in order to reclaim top spot in the table, while a draw in the Camp Nou would leave them needing to claim a point in order to recover the leadership.

Real's Raphael Varane will be out of action for five or six weeks with a thigh injury, while Nacho is also doubtful with a muscle problem, meanwhile the press has opened a debate over whether Kiko Casilla should replace Keylor Navas as first choice in goal.

A win in a tough ground to visit will steady nerves in the capital, but failure to do so would get the alarm bells ringing at a club where any game that doesn't end in victory is seen as a failure.

Helen Mirren ‘fed up’ with her own ambition

Helen Mirren has said she is fed up of still being ambitious after 50 years as an actress.

The 71-year-old star may have 115 awards to her name including an Oscar, two Golden Globes and five BAFTAs but the Hollywood actress always has a "niggling little nub of ambition that hasn't shut up yet",reported Contactmusic.

"Well, of course, my career is pretty amazing. I am lucky in my profession that I am still working. So I can't complain about that.

"But that doesn't mean that my nasty, niggling little nub of ambition hasn't shut up yet: 'Why aren't you doing this or that? Why didn't you do that better? Oh you blew it there.' That sort of drive is there and I wish it wasn't as I'm kind of fed up with it," Mirren said.

Kids inherit obesity from parents

PTI | Mumbai |

About 35 to 40 per cent children from all over the world inherit obesity from parents, says a recent research undertaken by University of Sussex even as medical experts here also feel that a similar situation prevails in India.

This research is very much relevant to Indian population as around 30 million people in the country are obese, medical experts say.

The research had considered the BMI (Body Mass Index) of the Obese children and their patients across six countries including UK, USA, China, Indonesia, Spain and Mexico, thereby covering all the key geographies of the world.

Professor Peter Dolton, the lead author of the study says the pattern of results is remarkably consistent across all the countries after analysing the data of over 100,000 sample spread across the two highest obese nations (US and UK) and the two least obese nations i.e. China and Indonesia.

In his research, Dolton noted that the study gives an important and rare insight into how obesity is transmitted across generations in both developed and developing countries and also indicated that the process of intergenerational transmission is the same across all the different countries.

Commenting on this research, leading obesity surgeon Dr M G Bhat from Apollo Spectra and Manipal Hospitals in Bangalore said, "in many of my patients, I have observed that they also have obese children pointing out to family factors and genetic inheritance."

"Researches have shown that Genes appear to play an important role in the development of obesity in childhood.

Genes may influence behaviour through appetite or by making it harder to resist food," Bhatt said.

Dr Supreet Grover, nutritionist & weight loss consultant at AXIS Hospital says, "Various Factors lead to obesity and I do believe that to an extent obesity is a result of our genetic inheritance and family factors," .

AAP govt putting money into pockets of poor people: Arvind Kejriwal

SNS | New Delhi |

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has approved 37 per cent hike in the minimum wages of the city's labour class, saying it is a "Holi gift" for them, that his government puts money into the pockets of poor people.

"This is a very big and historic decision. With this, we are directly putting money into the pocket of poor people," Kejriwal said, addressing a press conference in the capital on Saturday.

The approval, now, has to be cleared by Lt Governor Anil Baijal. Kejriwal said the approval would be put before the governor on Monday for clearance.

"We are sending this file to LG sir (Anil Baijal) and are very hopeful about its approval. I will personally go and meet him in this connection. If LG approves this proposal, then it will be a Holi gift to the labourers in Delhi," Kejriwal said.

The minimum wages was revised following the recommendation of a committee formed after former Lt Governor Najeeb Jung returned the file of a proposal to hike minimum wages by about 50 per cent in September 2016.

In an effort to remove discrepancies, a tripartite committee of five members each from the government, labour unions and industry associations was formed with the LG's approval. Several meetings were held and the final committee meeting was held on February 16.

Following the meeting recommendations, the Delhi Cabinet approved the recommendation of the new committee to revise minimum wages.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Convener said the special committee constituted by the Delhi Labour Department recommended a hike in minimum wages by about 37 per cent.

"The minimum wages for unskilled labour in Delhi currently stands at Rs 9,724 per month, which has been increased to Rs 13,350," Kejriwal said, adding, "For semi-skilled and skilled persons, the minimum wage would be increased from Rs 10,764 to Rs 14,698 and from Rs 11,830 to Rs 16,182, respectively".

This is the second attempt by the AAP government within months to revise minimum wages after former LG Jung turned down the previous decision to revises wages on procedural grounds.

The AAP government had earlier proposed minimum monthly wages for unskilled workers to be increased from Rs 9,000 to Rs 14,052, for semi-skilled workers from Rs 10,582 to Rs 15,471, and for skilled workers from Rs 11,622 to Rs 17,033. "The revised minimum wage figures are Rs 600 to Rs 700 less than the last year's proposal," Kejriwal said.

The chief minister said if the government had stuck to the old recommendations of hiking minimum wages by about 50 per cent then it would have invited unnecessary litigation. "So we decided to go by the latest recommendations of the new committee after analysing the latest data," he added.

Labour Minister Gopal Rai said that the committee decided the minimum wages after assessing five points, recommended by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Supreme Court, which are housing, clothing, food, education, electricity and fuel, taking into consideration their market prices.

Democrats elect Tom Perez as new chairman

IANS | Washington |

Members of the Democratic National Committee elected former Labor Secretary Tom Perez as their new chairman, media reports said.

Perez, known as a civil rights advocate, won 235 of the 445 votes cast by the Democratic delegates meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, since Thursday to elect the new chairman of the DNC, Xinhua news agency reported.

After shaking hands with his rival for the position Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison, Perez proposed a motion to name his "good friend" Ellison as Deputy Chairman of the DNC, and received unanimous consent.

Ellison accepted the position and asked his followers to support Perez starting today because Democrats cannot risk going forward divided.

"I'm asking you to give everything you've got to support Chairman Perez," Ellison told his fellow Democrats.

Being backed by former Vice President Joe Biden, Perez was encouraged by Obama's team to run for the position.

Democrats are submerged in a serious crisis due to the loss of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in her run for the White House, as well as by their inability to win back the Senate from conservatives in the legislative elections last November.

At the same time, they could scarcely cut into Republicans' majority in the House of Representatives, while suffering big losses at state and local levels.

Delhi Congress plans door-to-door campaign for MCD polls

PTI | New Delhi |

The Delhi Congress has chalked out a plan for door-to-door campaign for the MCD elections with each worker covering 16 houses under every polling booth.

The Congress is gearing up for the polls to 272 wards of the three civic bodies by focusing on "failures" of both the AAP and the BJP on development front.

The party is looking for a revival in Delhi after its dismal performances in the Lok Sabha and the Assembly elections in the national capital.

In January this year, party vice-president Rahul Gandhi had met a delegation of the Delhi Congress, including its opposition leaders in three BJP-ruled municipal corporations, and gave suggestions for the MCD polls which is likely to be held in April.

"On Gandhi's suggestion, the party is forming a dedicated team of 15 workers per booth for the MCD elections," senior Delhi Congress leader Chatar Singh said.

There are nearly 13,000 polling booths in Delhi spread over 70 Assembly constituencies. Every ward has around 40 polling booths with each having around 1,000 voters, he said.

The party has a created a pool of around 2 lakh workers who will ensure door-to-door campaign at booth level, with each worker covering about 60-70 voters or roughly 16 houses during campaigning for MCD elections, Singh said.

"This door-to-door contact programme has already started with workers visiting homes under 'Meri Dilli Mere Sapne' campaign launched by the party in December last year," he said.

Gandhi is slated to address a convention of Delhi Congress at Ramleela Grounds here which will be attended by these booth-level workers.

The workers have been pooled on the recommendations of applicants for Congress ticket in MCD polls. Feedback of these workers will also be vital in deciding tickets in different wards besides the strong voter connect in each polling booth, he said.

Nitesh directs Aamir for short film on women empowerment

After the massive success of Dangal, actor-director duo Aamir Khan and Nitesh Tiwari have collaborated on a brand film about women empowerment.

The film throws light on the social issue of gender inequality in the country and is part of Star Plus' Nayi Soch campaign.

The 50-second short, created by Ogilvy, showcases Aamir as a small-town, middle-class new-age father who is progressive and confident that his daughters will take ahead the legacy of his business.

Lauding the initiative, Aamir said in a statement, "The film is a tribute to all the proud dads and their daughters who became the beacons of change."

While, Uday Shankar, Chairman & CEO, Star India said, "It not only questions the gender discrimination that still exists, but also reiterates our belief that it is time for fathers to step up and inspire their daughters with confidence and self-belief.

"Aamir Khan brings great credibility and empathy to the role of a father whose progressive thinking gives his daughters the freedom to flourish."

Fearing DU like violence, Ambedkar varsity postpones Kashmir event

PTI | New Delhi |

Fearing DU like violence on its campus, the Ambedkar University in the national capital has postponed an event marking the 26th anniversary of the alleged Kunan Poshpora mass rape in Kashmir.

On February 23, Ambedkar University and an NGO Women Against Sexual Violence and State Repression (WSS) were to organise an event to observe the Kashmiri Women's Day of Resistance on the 26th anniversary of the alleged mass sexual violence unleashed by the army against the villagers of Kunan and Poshpora in Kashmir.

Less than 24 hours before the event, the speakers were sent an email informing them that the seminar has been postponed citing the alleged threats to "freedom of speech".

"The AUD administration want some changes in the shape of the event from the faculty and we will do that and reschedule a date and place sometime in March as you can see the times are bad for the university as a place for free speech and free discussions and critical engagements in our society," the university said in an email to the speakers of the seminar.

Gowhar Fazili, a scholar who was supposed to present a paper entitled "Familial Grief, Resistance and the Political Imaginary in Kashmir", confirmed receiving the email.

"The institutions, academicians and activists buckle before the Right-wing threats with such ease," he told PTI.

Other speakers of the seminar were Bhavneet Kaur from Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons, who was slated to speak on "The politics of emotion: women's narratives of memory, resistance and the Everyday in Kashmir", Vanessa Chishti, OP Jindal University-"the woman's question in Kashmir", Iffat Fatima, director of documentary 'Khoon Div Baarav' and Essar Batool, co-author of Do You Remember Kunan Poshpora.

Delhi University's Ramjas College had on Wednesday witnessed large-scale violence between members of AISA and ABVP workers. The genesis of the clash was an invite to JNU students Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid to address a seminar on 'Culture of Protests' which was withdrawn by the college authorities following opposition by the ABVP.

ArcelorMittal plans solar farm on steel plant land in K’taka

PTI | New Delhi |

World's largest steelmaker ArcelorMittal may set up a solar farm on land alloted to it for the proposed 6 MT Karnataka project in view of excess global steel capacity and delays in securing raw materials.

The company had entered into a pact with Karnataka government for setting up a 6 million tonnes (MT) steel plant with a captive 750 MW power plant at an estimated investment of $6.5 billion.

"In view of excess capacity of steel world-wide and uncertainty in iron ore availability locally, the company is also exploring the possibility of utilizing the land in Karnataka for the establishment of a solar farm for generating solar energy," the global steel giant has said in its latest report.

ArcelorMittal India has received possession certificates for 2,659 acres of private land following the acquisition of 1,827 acres and 832 acres in December 2011 and October 2012, respectively, it said.

A balance of 136.33 acres owned by the Karnataka government is being processed for allocation, it said.

Setting up of the solar park will contribute to the mitigation of Karnataka's power crisis and participation in the National Solar Energy mission of the government of India.

"In this regard, the company has sought the state government's permission to set up a solar farm of up to 600 MW.

"The state government is considering ArcelorMittal's proposal and the company is hopeful of receiving a favorable response to the proposal," it said.

The NRI billionaire Lakshmi Mittal-led company in June 2010 had signed an MoU with the Karnataka government to set up a 6 MTPA greenfield project at Kuditini in Bellary, Karnataka.

After failing for over a decade to set up plants at Odisha and Jharkhand, ArcelorMittal had signed the pact with Karnataka government for the plant but the same is yet to take off.

While the company is facing raw material security issues in Karnataka, the projects in Jharkhand and Odisha were marred by delays.

Six appeal as Kenyan Kipsang wins Tokyo Marathon

Sarah Chepchirchir won the women's race in a personal best to complete a perfect day for Kenya.

AFP | Tokyo |

Kenya's Wilson Kipsang stormed to victory in the Tokyo Marathon on Sunday in the fastest race ever run in Japan.

The former world record holder clocked 2:03:58 over a flatter course than in previous years as he added the Tokyo title to victories in London, New York and Berlin.

Sarah Chepchirchir won the women's race in a personal best 2:19:47 — the first sub-2:20 in Japan — to complete a perfect day for Kenya.

The top six men's finishers were all Kenyans with Gideon Kipketer runner-up in 2:05:51 and former winner Dickson Chumba third in 2:06:25.

Evans Chebet (2:06:42), Alfers Lagat (2:07:39) and Bernard Kipyego (2:08:10) all finished ahead of Eritrean Yohanes Gebregergish, who clocked 2:08:14 to edge out Japan's Hiroto Inoue.

Kipsang had targeted countryman Dennis Kimetto's world record of 2:02:57 and he got off to a quick start in the Tokyo sunshine.

The 34-year-old's pace dropped over the final 10 kilometres running into a slight breeze but still ran a fourth sub-2:04.

"I felt good today and I was trying to go for a world record," said Kipsang, who held the world mark with a 2:03:23 run at the Berlin Marathon in 2013 before Kimetto surpassed that a year later.

"It was a little bit windy," added the London Olympic bronze medallist. "That's why I couldn't run that time, but I look forward to coming back and hope to compete at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020."

Chepchirchir left a quality field in her wake, former champion Birhane Dibaba of Ethiopia finishing second over a minute and a half behind in her bid to win a second Tokyo title in three years.
