Babri case is about title, says Asaduddin Owaisi

IANS | Hyderabad |

Virtually ruling out an out-of-court settlement of the Ayodhya dispute as suggested by the Supreme Court on Tuesday, MP Asaduddin Owaisi said the case was about title.

"Please remember Babri Masjid case is about title which the Allahabad High Court wrongly decided as a Partnership case. Hence the appeal in apex court," he tweeted.

Owaisi is a member of All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), which had challenged in the Supreme Court the 2010 verdict of the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court directing that the Babri Masjid-Ramjanmbhoomi disputed site be divided into three parts.

The court had directed that the 2.77-acre disputed land be divided in three parts – two parts to Hindu organisations and the remaining to the Muslims.

The AIMPB, the apex body of Indian Muslims, termed the High Court verdict as "unacceptable", saying it was based on faith and not on evidence.

Describing the judgement as "strange and surprising" the Supreme Court had on May 9, 2011 stayed it.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday suggested out-of-court settlement while hearing an appeal by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy for construction of the Ram temple.

Owaisi hoped that the Supreme Court would decide the other cases pending since the demolition of Babri Msjid in 1992.

"I hope Supreme Court decides the contempt petition pending since 1992," he tweeted.

"Waiting to hear about whether conspiracy charges will be held against (BJP leaders LK) Advani, (Murli Manohar) Joshi, Uma Bharati in Babri demolition case."

Ayodhya dispute a sentimental issue, first sit together and sort out: SC

SNS | New Delhi |

Terming the Ram Mandir issue "sentimental” and “sensitive”, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said that the matter should be settled amicably.

"It is an issue of sentiment and religion. First sit together and sort out.  Both sides employ moderators and hold meetings," Chief Justice JS Khehar said.

The apex court suggested that the matter should be settled through discussion and would only step in if the issue is not resolved through talks.

Chief Justice Khehar even offered to act as a mediator between the parties to resolve the decade-old issue.

"Any person of your choice. You want me to mediate (but) I will not hear (on judicial side). You want my brother (Judge). There are issues. You all sit together across the table and decide,” Khehar said.

Chief Justice Khehar said while hearing an urgent an appeal from senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy to consider an appeal to build the Ram Mandir which has been pending since 2010.

After hearing the Supreme Court’s response, Swamy said it is a strenuous effort to make both the contradicting parties sit together and judicial judgment is required.

Meanwhile, the Babri Masjid Action Committee (BMAC) said it is impossible to settle the issue out of court.

"Negotiations have failed earlier, an out of court settlement is not possible," Zafaryab Jilani, Convenor of BMAC said.

The dispute started when hundreds of RSS karsevaks in 1992 demolished the 16th century Babri Mosque in Ayodhya, claiming that the mosque was built in the holy birthplace of the Hindu deity Lord Rama.

The Supreme Court in 2010 put a freeze on the Allahabad High Court order in the same year, saying Lord Ram was born in Ayodhya and Hindus have the right to build a temple and worship there.

Many BJP top leaders, including LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, are accused of involving in the Babri Masjid demolition case.

‘Rahul Gandhi must make way for others if he can’t lead Congress’

Deposit of old notes: SC asks Centre, RBI to reply in 2 weeks

SNS | New Delhi |

In a major development to the issue of depositing old notes, the Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a notice to the Centre and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) asking them to file an explanation within two weeks on why people were not being allowed to deposit demonetised notes till March 31 as promised.

Earlier, on March 6, the top court had also questioned why a separate category was not created for those who couldn't deposit demonetised notes by December 30, 2016.

While announcing the demonetisation move on November 8, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that old currency notes (Rs.1,000 and Rs.500) could be exchanged till March 31, 2017.

However, many people returned empty-handed after December 31 as the RBI allowed the facility only for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) or those who were abroad during the 50-day of the demonetisation period.

The next hearing on the case will be held on April 11.

Ivanka Trump to get own office in White House

IANS | Washington |

US President Donald Trump's eldest daughter Ivanka is set to get her own office in the White House even after saying that she would not play a formal role in her father's administration, a media report said.

The first daughter has secured her own office on the West Wing's second floor — a space next to senior adviser Dina Powell, who was recently promoted to a position on the National Security Council, Politico news said in the report on Monday.

She is also in the process of obtaining a security clearance and is set to receive government-issued communications devices this week.

Ivanka will be joining her husband Jared Kushner, who is a senior adviser to the President.

However, Ivanka will hold no official position and is not pocketing a salary, according to her attorney Jamie Gorelick.

Ivanka's role will be to serve as the President's "eyes and ears" while providing broad-ranging advice, not just limited to women's empowerment issues, Gorelick told Politico news.

Last week, Ivanka raised eyebrows when she was seated next to Angela Merkel for the German Chancellor's first official visit to Trump's White House.

"Ivanka's plans to adhere to the same ethics and records retention rules that apply to government employees even though she is not technically an employee," Gorelick said.

A spokeswoman for Ivanka Trump said her role was signed off on by the White House counsel's office, and the conflict issues were "worked through" with the office of government ethics.

People close to Ivanka said that she sees nothing unusual about the arrangement — it is simply how she has worked with her father for years, as a senior official at the Trump Organisation and as Donald Trump's partner on the reality TV show "The Apprentice".

Punjab CM to seek legal opinion on Navjot Sidhu’s TV stint

PTI | Chandigarh |

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh will seek legal opinion on whether his minister Navjot Sidhu can continue as a celebrity-judge on a popular TV comedy show.

He told a TV news channel that he will ask the Advocate General to give his opinion on Sidhu's continuation as a celebrity-judge on 'The Kapil Sharma Show'.

"I do not know what the Constitution or the law says on this matter. We will have to ask our advocate general to give us an opinion whether a person who is a minister can do what he wants to do.

"It will entirely depend on legal opinion and then I will bring it to Navjot Singh Sidhu's notice. Frankly, I do not know whether it is a conflict of interest. Once I get an opinion from them (advocate general and legal experts), I will have a chat with him," Singh told the channel.

Sidhu, a front runner for the post of deputy chief minister, was given a rather lightweight department to look after. He has been made minister of tourism and culture, and local bodies in the new Congress government.

Reacting to the issue, Sidhu insisted his TV shows will not interfere with his cabinet responsibilities.

"I have no liquor, sand mining or transport business like former deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. I earn a living through TV shows and I will be in Chandigarh from Monday to Thursday and in Amritsar from Friday to Sunday. What I do at night should not be anyone's concern, will take first flight back to Punjab after TV shoots in Mumbai," he said.

As he invited criticism for saying he will continue to appear on the show, his wife and former state legislator Navjot Kaur Sidhu came out in his support.

In a Facebook post, Kaur on Sunday said her family had no other source of income but television, and undue hype was being created over the issue.

"Such hype has been created about Navjot earning a living from television. When I was working as an MLA, my electricity bill and tea for guests cost more. We have no other business or source of income except television. He has left 80 per cent of shows, which included IPL, commentary, etc.

"Shooting for two shows (of the comedy show) takes only five hours a week and that also mostly on Saturday night. I think it is a meagre time for a non-socially active God-fearing workaholic (sic)," she wrote.

Sidhu, a cricketer-turned-politician, served as Amritsar MP thrice when he was with BJP.

In the recent assembly polls, he won the Amritsar East seat, which was earlier represented by his wife, on a Congress ticket.

Be brave and smile, ECB tells England cricketers

ECB is taking steps to significantly boost the number of players at grassroots level.

AFP | London |

England's new Test captain Joe Root and One Day counterpart Eoin Morgan must provide crowd pleasing cricket and bear a sunny disposition so as to attract new players to the game, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said Monday.

The ECB is taking steps to significantly boost the number of players at grassroots level — which has stagnated over the past five years — and the England cricket team is seen as a useful weapon in that regard.

Tom Harrison, chief executive of the ECB, said the England cricketers and their director of cricket former England skipper Andrew Strauss knew what was expected of them.

"Andrew Strauss and the England team are very clear that part of their responsibility is playing brave cricket — this commitment to playing an exciting formula of cricket every time they go on the park is linked to (the participation strategy).

"Joe Root and Eoin Morgan understand their responsibility to play exciting cricket for future generations to connect with and for fans to get behind."

Harrison, who has been in the post since January 2015 and installed Strauss at the expense of Paul Downton, said even if England were to lose if they went down fighting the reaction would be kinder.

"It's a very deliberate strategy," said Harrison.

"It doesn't work every time but we understand you're more likely to be forgiven for having a bad day if you've tried everything to win a game as opposed to trying not to lose it, which is a key difference.

"Ever since Andrew took the job as director of cricket he saw the link between successful England teams, and I mean successful by approach as much as results, was key."

Harrison, who played cricket for Derbyshire and Northamptonshire, said the days of England trying to grind out a one-off Test victory are over.

"People like the fact the team is taking calculated risks, at very competitive limits, but also with a smile on their faces," he said.

BJP hails SC advice for amicable settlement of Ayodhya dispute

IANS | New Delhi |

The BJP on Tuesday hailed the Supreme Court's advice for an amicable settlement of the Ayodhya Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said that a solution through friendly negotiations was the best way to solve the long-pending dispute.

"This is a very good step by the apex court. Even the BJP has been encouraging solving the issue through negotiations. It is a very good step to solve the issue by sitting together and negotiating," said PP Chaudhary, Minister of State for Law and Justice and a senior BJP leader.

The apex court on Tuesday said that the amicable settlement of the Ayodhya dispute was a better course than insistence on judicial pronouncement.

However, another senior BJP leader, Subramanian Swamy, said that the Ramjanmabhoomi in Ayodhya should be used only for constructing the Ram temple.

"Masjid can be built anywhere, Namaz can be read anywhere… it can be read on the street. The Ram Janmabhoomi is for the Ram Mandir and it should be used for the Ram temple only," said Swamy.

Swamy is also a petitioner who has sought that the Supreme Court should constitute a bench to hear a batch of petitions challenging a 2010 Allahabad High Court order.

The 2010 order said that there should be a partition of the Ayodhya land between the parties to the dispute.

However, the Wakf board ruled out the out-of-court settlement, stating that the case has been in the court for long.

"An amicable solution is impossible. This has to be dealt in the court itself. After all, it is long pending in the court," said Zafaryab Jilani, Convenor of the Babri Masjid Action Committee.
