PIL against Kamal Haasan for comments on Mahabharata

SNS | New Delhi |

Film actor Kamal Haasan is in trouble again with his allegedly derogatory remarks on the Hindu epic Mahabharata.

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed against Haasan in the Tirunelveli District Court by members of the Hindu Makkal Katchi for allegedly hurting Hindu sentiments.

During an interview to a Tamil channel recently Haasan expressed his views on Mahabharata, saying, "In Mahabharata, Panchali was used as a pawn while the men gambled” and “she was used as a collateral and India is a country that respects and honours a book that revolves around men using a woman to gamble away as if she was a mere object.” Following this, Hindu Makkal Katchi members expressed concern that this might cause enmity between two communities.

This is not the first time that the actor has courted controversy. From Tamil Nadu’s state politics to Jallikattu protests, his tweets and comments have always dragged him under the limelight.

Even during the release of his film Vishwaroopam, Haasan's character created controversy as it presented a particular community in a negative light.

Sri Lankan Navy arrests 10 Indian fishermen

PTI | Rameswaram (TN) |

Ten Indian fishermen were on Tuesday arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy when they were fishing near Katchatheevu, a fisheries department official said.

They were arrested on charges of crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line, Assistant Director of Fisheries, Kulanjinathan, said.

The fishermen, belonging to Thangachimadam near here, were taken to Kankesanthurai along with their boat, he said.

Earlier on March 6, 22-year-old Bridgo was shot dead by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel while he was fishing in a mechanised boat near Katchatheevu islet. Another fisherman, Saravanan, had suffered injuries in the incident.

The fishermen had protested the killing and had refused to receive the body of the youth till a Union minister visited the island and gave them an assurance that such incidents would not recur.

They had withdrawn their protest a week later after talks with Union ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Pon Radhakrishnan, who assured them that their demands would be met.

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami had also written to the Centre and urged it to summon Sri Lankan High Commissioner to India forthwith and convey to him "the strong feelings of the Government of India and Tamil Nadu about the 'unprovoked' firing on fishermen and non-adherence to earlier agreements on this issue".

BJP MP calls for unique ID for defence equipment

IANS | New Delhi |

BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi on Tuesday called for implementation of NATO like numbering of defence equipments in the inventory of Indian armed forces, and highlighted that this will result in a 30 per cent decrease in procurements.

Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha during Zero Hour, Lekhi said: "Unique Identification (UID) is something we are using for human beings, but it is needed also for military equipments."

She said that many equipments in the Army, Navy and the Air Force are common with very large inventory.

"NATO standardised process has NSN (National Stock Number). We do not use numbers and our standardisation process is a problem. If we use bureau methods of efficient management of inventory, we will decrease our procurement by 30 per cent," she said.

The National Stock Number (NSN) is a 13-digit code recognised by all NATO countries, including the US Department of Defense, identifying all the "standardised material items of supply".

"We go on buying, making purchase of parts that are already available. People who have been working on this particular project need not be shifted, the project should be completed and some senior people be involved so that we can manage the inventory better and reduce our procurement," she said.

As per the National Codification Bureau of India, procurement costs can come down by nearly 30 per cent by streamlining process of procurement and efficiently managing the stocks with such identification numbers.

No evidence Obama wiretapped Trump: FBI

PTI | Washington |

Two top US spymasters on Tuesday trashed President Donald Trump's allegation that his Trump Tower was wiretapped on the orders of his predecessor Barack Obama, saying there is no evidence to support the claim.

"With respect to the president's tweets about alleged wiretapping directed at him by the prior administration, I have no information that supports those tweets, and we have looked carefully inside the FBI," FBI Director James Comey told the powerful House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

Responding to a question from the members on Trump's allegation, Comey said the Justice Department had also looked for evidence to support Trump's allegation that his Trump Tower in New York – the headquarters of his presidential campaign – was wiretapped but could not find any.

"The Department of Justice has asked me to share with you that the answer is the same for the Department of Justice and all its components, the department has no information that supports those tweets," Comey said, noting that no US president can unilaterally order a wiretap.

Admiral Michael Rogers, Director of the National Security Agency and Commander of US Cyber Command, also spoke on the same lines asserting he has seen no evidence of wiretapping as alleged by Trump through his tweets.

Trump has alleged that Obama had ordered wiretapping of the Trump Tower in the run up to the November 8 presidential election. His accusation had led to a huge uproar in the US and an Obama aide had to come forward to reject the charge.

Trump's allegation had also triggered a diplomatic row with Britain recently, as Trump and aides cited a discredited report by an American television network that Obama asked a British intelligence agency to tap him.

The British government had objected to the claim and the Trump administration had assured London that the White House will not use the allegations again.

Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said the existence of a month-long FBI investigation into Trump officials' ties to the Russians confirms the necessity of a comprehensive, independent, bipartisan commission to bring the full truth to light.

"The possibility of Trump officials conspiring with a foreign adversary to influence a US election represents a grave threat to our national security and our democracy, and the American people deserve answers," she said.

Trump has been desperate to distract attention from the FBI investigation into the Kremlin's grip on his administration. Director Comey's testimony put the last nail into President Trump's mendacious wiretapping claims, she alleged.

"Trump owes President Obama and the American people an apology for his disgraceful and incendiary fabrications," Pelosi demanded.

"The Deflector-in-Chief's desperation demands answers to our original question: what is Russia's political, personal and financial grip on the Trump Administration? The American people want and deserve the whole truth about the Trump-Russia connection," she said.

Soon after Comey's Congressional hearing, Democrats demanded that Trump apologise to Obama.

"President Trump owes the American people and President Obama more than just an explanation, but an apology. He should admit he was wrong, stop the outlandish Tweets, and get to work on behalf of this country," said Senate majority leader Charles Schumer.

"The FBI director has now confirmed what members from both parties in both the House and the Senate have said: 'President Obama did not order a wiretap on Trump Tower'. No matter what else happened, there are no ifs, ands, or buts about it President Obama wiretapping Trump Tower did not happen," he said.

"By tweeting this claim and attempting to put unproven theories from the fringes of the American media into the mainstream, President Trump has severely damaged his credibility, which is essential to being president. He needs to retract his claim immediately," Schumer alleged.

The dance of the outlaws

IANS | Guwahati |

In a small town called Pathsala, about 60 km from this principal town of Assam, a mission has been underway for more than half a century. The task at hand is not easy — revival of the Nati dance of India's outlawed Devadasi tradition.

Even then, the man behind the mission, Dilip Kakati, is trudging along in his "lonely journey" to restore the lost glory of this ancient dance form of Assam.

Assam's Devadasi dance is a 1,000-year-old tradition, prevalent since the 7th century when the Devadasi system was in place. Girls were offered to Saiva, Sakta and Vaishnava temples to dance as part of a daily ritual. Ancient texts like the Kalika Puran and Jogitantra carry references to this ritualistic dance practice.

Kakati says that in those times, Devadasis — also known as Natis in the local language — used to remain unmarried while living with their families and attending to the temple services. Apart from that, they were also required to perform outside the temple during certain occasions, such as Durga Puja.

The Devadasi dance's fall from glory happened around the 17th century when there were repeated foreign invasions and royal patronage receded — forcing the sacred temple dancers into prostitution for survival. By the early 20th century, the British had abolished the system in India.

"In the early 1950s, Ratnakanta Talukdar of Pathsala decided to revive the forgotten Nati dance tradition. He did not belong to any temple dancer's family. He was an outsider, but under the guidance of the legendary Kalaguru Vishnu Rabha, he dived into this revival mission and found the last two surviving Natis, Kaushalya Devi and Royabala Devi," Kakati said.

The Natis had very faint memories of the dance they had performed once upon a time, and from what they could remember, a 10-minute performance was put together. But the next challenge was finding young girls whose families would allow them to perform the stigmatised dance form. But Talukdar was successful — he found four girls, one of whom was Dilip Kakati's sister.

"That is how I got involved in the Devadasi dance revival mission," the 61-year-old flag-bearer says. The brother-sister duo was at the receiving end of societal rebuke, but they were undeterred. The revival mission had begun.

"When he (Ratnakanta Talukdar) passed away in 1980, the responsibility fell on my shoulders to carry on the mission," he said.

Ever since, Kakati and his troupe of seven members have been performing the Nati dance on stage in various cultural programmes. As he trains the Devadasi dancers, it is obvious that acceptance of this form is no longer the big challenge. "The challenge now is propagating the pure form of Nati dance," he said.

According to Kakati, over the years, Nati dance has found other supporters who have been propagating a "remixed" version of the dance form. "There is a Guwahati-based artist, also from Pathsala, who, along with his troupe, has been performing Nati dance across India. He asked me to join him on several occasions but I found a lot of differences in his dance form… it seems to have been tweaked to suit modern tastes," Kakati said.

"No matter how lonely my journey may be, I will propagate only the purest form of Nati dance, the one that was painstakingly put together from the memories of the original Natis. But I wish the state government extended some support in preserving this dance form," he lamented.

Kakati's troupe members — the "khol" (drum) player, the one who plays the "taal" (cymbal), the dancers, including his sister — are a dedicated lot but he is still worried about the dance form's survival after he is gone. "My children are not as interested… it is therefore heartening when artistes like (Mumbai-based dancer) Prateesha Suresh give a platform for us to tell people about this tradition through discussions and performances."

"I just hope that after I am gone, there will be someone who will be ready to carry on the beacon of the Nati dance in its pure form and help it regain its lost glory," he said.

‘Don’t make Aadhaar card mandatory for mid-day meals’

IANS | New Delhi |

Congress member KC Venugopal on Tuesday urged the government in the Lok Sabha not to make Aadhaar card mandatory for students to avail of mid-day meals.

"There are complaints against the quality of rice, no proper space for serving food," Venugopal said raising the issue during the Zero hour in the Lok Sabha.

"The situation has further worsened after the Ministry of Human Resource Development directed that cooks working under the mid-day meal scheme will now require an Aadhaar card," Venugopal said.

The ministry recently announced that cook-cum-helpers working under the scheme as well as student beneficiaries will now be required to have an Aadhaar card to avail the facility.

There are some 12 crore children enrolled under the scheme, the Lok Sabha member said.

"The government should not deprive children by making the Aadhaar card mandatory," he said.

The mid-day meal scheme (MDMS) is centrally-sponsored to boost the universalisation of primary education by increasing enrolment, retention and attendance in primary and upper primary classes.

Bastian Schweinsteiger heading for Chicago Fire?

Will the former Germany captain become the latest high-profile player to cross the Pacific?

SNS | New Delhi |

Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has joined Major League Soccer club Chicago Fire on a one-year deal, according to sources.

While the authenticity of the transfer is yet to be officially confirmed by either of the three parties involved, news has been spreading like wildfire after the Chicago Tribune ran a story confirming the move on Monday.

Initially a winger, before transforming into a central midfielder who could dictate the tempo of a game with his metronomic range of passing coupled with some hard-running in the middle of the pitch, he won the Bundesliga Player of the Year accolade in 2013.

A legend at Bayern Munich, where he won the Bundesliga several times and the UEFA Champions League in 2013, Schweinsteiger moved to the English giants in the summer of 2015 for a reported fee of €9 million and enjoyed a decent maiden season in England under Louis van Gaal.

Van Gaal, who managed him while the duo were at Bayern, was replaced by Jose Mourinho the following year and all of a sudden the German found himself out of a team that were competing for four trophies in the 2016-17 season.

Injuries to midfielders allowed the German, who is married to retired tennis star Ana Ivanovic, to get a few games under his belt but with not a single appearance in the Premier League and starts reserved only for cup games, his time at Old Trafford was running out.

The midfielder, who won the FIFA World Cup in 2014, captained Germany at the UEFA European Championships in 2016 and announced his retirement from international football after their exit at the hands of host France in the semifinals. Having made his debut in 2004, he had amassed an impressive 121 appearances for the four-time world champions.

The move to the MLS, where several big-names such as Andrea Pirlo and David Villa play, makes sense at this stage in his career and he can easily become the focal point for the Chicago Fire.

While his lack of match fitness may be an issue, a player of his pedigree should be able to get settled fairly quickly in the 2017 MLS season, which began on March 3 and will conclude in October. An official confirmation is expected to be made within the next couple of days.

Pakistan-Afghanistan border reopens

IANS | Islamabad |

Pakistan on Tuesday reopened its border with Afghanistan after it was shut in February following an attack on a Sufi shrine in Sindh that killed over 70 people.

Thousands of individuals and cargo vehicles crossed the border to enter the two countries through Torkham and Chaman border crossings, Geo TV reported.

Travellers, transporters and traders expressed happiness at the government decision.

"The two countries should resolve matters through discussions. Closing the borders is not the right way to find solutions," a trader said.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ordered on Monday that the Pakistan-Afghan border would reopen. The decision was a "goodwill gesture", Sharif said.

It was reopened at 7 am on Tuesday, officials said.

The officials told Radio Pakistan that Afghans carrying valid documents alone would be allowed to enter.

Pakistan sealed the Torkham border crossing with Afghanistan for an indefinite period after the bombing at the Lal Shehbaz Qalandar shrine in Sindh province last month.

The border crossing was sealed for all trade and commercial activities due to security concerns.

MWCD cautions Delhiites against fake BBBP schemes

Babri case is about title, says Asaduddin Owaisi

IANS | Hyderabad |

Virtually ruling out an out-of-court settlement of the Ayodhya dispute as suggested by the Supreme Court on Tuesday, MP Asaduddin Owaisi said the case was about title.

"Please remember Babri Masjid case is about title which the Allahabad High Court wrongly decided as a Partnership case. Hence the appeal in apex court," he tweeted.

Owaisi is a member of All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), which had challenged in the Supreme Court the 2010 verdict of the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court directing that the Babri Masjid-Ramjanmbhoomi disputed site be divided into three parts.

The court had directed that the 2.77-acre disputed land be divided in three parts – two parts to Hindu organisations and the remaining to the Muslims.

The AIMPB, the apex body of Indian Muslims, termed the High Court verdict as "unacceptable", saying it was based on faith and not on evidence.

Describing the judgement as "strange and surprising" the Supreme Court had on May 9, 2011 stayed it.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday suggested out-of-court settlement while hearing an appeal by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy for construction of the Ram temple.

Owaisi hoped that the Supreme Court would decide the other cases pending since the demolition of Babri Msjid in 1992.

"I hope Supreme Court decides the contempt petition pending since 1992," he tweeted.

"Waiting to hear about whether conspiracy charges will be held against (BJP leaders LK) Advani, (Murli Manohar) Joshi, Uma Bharati in Babri demolition case."

Ayodhya dispute a sentimental issue, first sit together and sort out: SC

SNS | New Delhi |

Terming the Ram Mandir issue "sentimental” and “sensitive”, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said that the matter should be settled amicably.

"It is an issue of sentiment and religion. First sit together and sort out.  Both sides employ moderators and hold meetings," Chief Justice JS Khehar said.

The apex court suggested that the matter should be settled through discussion and would only step in if the issue is not resolved through talks.

Chief Justice Khehar even offered to act as a mediator between the parties to resolve the decade-old issue.

"Any person of your choice. You want me to mediate (but) I will not hear (on judicial side). You want my brother (Judge). There are issues. You all sit together across the table and decide,” Khehar said.

Chief Justice Khehar said while hearing an urgent an appeal from senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy to consider an appeal to build the Ram Mandir which has been pending since 2010.

After hearing the Supreme Court’s response, Swamy said it is a strenuous effort to make both the contradicting parties sit together and judicial judgment is required.

Meanwhile, the Babri Masjid Action Committee (BMAC) said it is impossible to settle the issue out of court.

"Negotiations have failed earlier, an out of court settlement is not possible," Zafaryab Jilani, Convenor of BMAC said.

The dispute started when hundreds of RSS karsevaks in 1992 demolished the 16th century Babri Mosque in Ayodhya, claiming that the mosque was built in the holy birthplace of the Hindu deity Lord Rama.

The Supreme Court in 2010 put a freeze on the Allahabad High Court order in the same year, saying Lord Ram was born in Ayodhya and Hindus have the right to build a temple and worship there.

Many BJP top leaders, including LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, are accused of involving in the Babri Masjid demolition case.

‘Rahul Gandhi must make way for others if he can’t lead Congress’

IANS | Thiruvananthapuram |

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi must make way for others if he does not want to lead the party, Youth Congress leader CR Mahesh has said.

"Respected Rahul Gandhi, if you are not interested to take the lead, please make way, as this great entity that has roots all over the country is getting snapped," Mahesh said in his Facebook page.

A Youth Congress Vice President, Mahesh contested the 2016 assembly polls from Karunagapally in Kollam district and lost to CPI's R Ramachandran by 1,759 votes.

Mahesh said the Congress in Kerala was without a President for two weeks.

"This comes at a time when the failures of the CPI-M and the BJP have to be highlighted and also when the top leadership of the party in Congress is watching from the sidelines the factional feud going on in the KSU," he said, referring to the student wing of the Congress.

He also urged former Defence Minister AK Antony to breaks his silence on what's happening in the Congress.

"We are prepared to die to see that the Indian National Congress stays alive in the country but it should be ensured that merit should be given due credit," Mahesh said.

Deposit of old notes: SC asks Centre, RBI to reply in 2 weeks

SNS | New Delhi |

In a major development to the issue of depositing old notes, the Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a notice to the Centre and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) asking them to file an explanation within two weeks on why people were not being allowed to deposit demonetised notes till March 31 as promised.

Earlier, on March 6, the top court had also questioned why a separate category was not created for those who couldn't deposit demonetised notes by December 30, 2016.

While announcing the demonetisation move on November 8, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that old currency notes (Rs.1,000 and Rs.500) could be exchanged till March 31, 2017.

However, many people returned empty-handed after December 31 as the RBI allowed the facility only for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) or those who were abroad during the 50-day of the demonetisation period.

The next hearing on the case will be held on April 11.
