Stars born from supermassive black holes spotted

IANS | London |

Astronomers have observed for the first time stars forming within powerful outflows of material blasted out from supermassive black holes at the cores of galaxies.

"Astronomers have thought for a while that conditions within these outflows could be right for star formation, but no one has seen it actually happening as it's a very difficult observation," said team leader Roberto Maiolino from University of Cambridge.

"Our results are exciting because they show unambiguously that stars are being created inside these outflows," Maiolino added.

The discovery, published in the journal Nature, has many consequences for understanding galaxy properties and evolution.

The discovery provides new and exciting information that could better our understanding of some astrophysics, including how certain galaxies obtain their shapes; how intergalactic space becomes enriched with heavy elements; and even from where unexplained cosmic infrared background radiation may arise.

The group of European astronomers used the MUSE and X-shooter instruments on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) at European Southern Observatory's Paranal Observatory in Chile to study an ongoing collision between two galaxies, known collectively as IRAS F23128-5919, that lie around 600 million light-years from Earth.

Observing the colossal winds of material — or outflows — originating near the supermassive black hole at the heart of the pair's southern galaxy, the researchers found the first clear evidence that stars are being born within them.

Such galactic outflows are driven by the huge energy output from the active and turbulent centres of galaxies.

Supermassive black holes lurk in the cores of most galaxies, and when they gobble up matter they also heat the surrounding gas and expel it from the host galaxy in powerful, dense winds.

"The stars that form in the wind close to the galaxy centre might slow down and even start heading back inwards, but the stars that form further out in the flow experience less deceleration and can even fly off out of the galaxy altogether," study co-author Helen Russell from Institute of Astronomy, University of Cambridge, explained.

After the assembly elections to five states, the BJP bagged overwhelming majorities in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Whereas in Goa and Manipur, it managed to steal a march over the Congress by stitching up crucial alliances and formed the governments.

Taapsee Pannu encourages women to learn self-defence

IANS | Mumbai |

Actress Taapsee Pannu, known for playing powerful characters in films like Baby, Pink and in her forthcoming Naam Shabana, says women should take responsibility for their own safety and learn the act of self-defence.

The actress also features in Culture Machine's latest video in the Unblushed series on Blush channel titled "Unblushed Taapsee| #HitBack", where she talks about how it is important for girls to be unapologetic about how they dress up and the lifestyle they lead.

"It's time for us to be responsible for our own safety and learn to protect ourselves. The video resonates with me and I am glad to be a part of something so powerful, something I hope every woman will understand and act upon," Tapsee said in a statement.

She also believes that women possess great power in form of strength and vulnerability.

"Though we do not have as much muscle power as of a man, god has compensated that with our strong sixth sense. If you are facing physical abuse, instead of thinking like a victim, use your presence of mind to deal with the situation. That's all that matter — power of mind, more than body," Taapsee said.

Taapsee started her career in 2010 with Telugu film Jhummandi Naadam, and then acted in various south Indian films. She made her debut in Bollywood with Chashme Baddoor in 2013. However, she was noticed for her action-packed performance in Baby, directed by Neeraj Pandey.

Her character in Baby is what has resulted in its spin-off Naam Shabana, produced by Pandey and directed by Shivam Nair and releasing on March 31.

Taapsee says "the film could have been called 'Naam Subham' also".

"I mean the film has got nothing to do with gender, because the girl Shabana was equally well trained that of a male spy," she added.

Interpol denies Red Notice against Lalit Modi

"The sword that was hanging over my head has suddenly gone," Modi said.

IANS | New Delhi |

Interpol has given a major reprieve to graft tainted former Indian Premier League (IPL) Chairman Lalit Modi denying a Red Notice against him.

"I just got off from a flight from Barcelona through which I sat completely numb. Just as I was boarding the flight I got the news that the Interpol had finally investigated and concluded and reached a verdict in my favour with a detailed letter of rejection of India's request for issuing of a Red Notice," Modi wrote on his Instagram account.

He also posted Interpol documents, which were not for public dissemination, at his Instagram and Twitter accounts.

"The sword that was hanging over my head has suddenly gone," Modi said.

The Interpol document dated March 24 said: "Lalit Kumar Modi… is not subject to an Interpol Red Notice or diffusion and not known in the Interpol's database."

The organisation however clarified that "in the past the individual (Lalit Modi) was subject of data record in Interpol's database, yet the data was later cancelled".

Lalit Modi had fled India in 2010, after facing charges of financial irregularity in IPL. He is currently living in Britain. His extradition process is still pending.

The authenticity of the documents could not be verified as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said they had no such information yet.

CBI spokesperson RK Gaur said: "The agency is authenticating the Interpol documents."

Kanye West in talks to join ‘American Idol’

PTI | Los Angeles |

Rapper Kanye West is in negotiations to join the revival of American Idol as one of the show's judges.

If reports are to be believed, NBC is courting the Gold Digger hitmaker to convince him to join the judging panel on the singing competition and that the network will stop at nothing to get him on board, reported AceShowbiz.

“Ryan Seacrest has put his name forward during his negotiations to come back as host and NBC are salivating over it,” a source told Radar Online.

“Kanye is at the very top of the wish list, not Simon Cowell. If Ryan hosting can help get them Kanye, that's a happy result for NBC,” the source added.

‘Trump admin may approve major export of natural gas to India’

PTI | Washington |

The Trump administration is expected to give its consent for major export of natural gas to energy-hungry India, a senior US official has said, underling that energy sector is likely to be a major area of bilateral co-operation.

"Watch for it," the official said.

His comments came as US President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order to wipe out his predecessor Barack Obama's climate change legacy.

No decision yet has been taken on Trump administration's commitment to the Paris Agreement on climate change. And same is the case with the various co-cooperation that the US has been doing with other countries including India on clean energy and climate change issues, the official said on condition of anonymity.

The official, however, said that energy sector is likely to be a major area of co-operation between India and the US.

Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan, during his visit to the US this month, had discussed with new Energy Secretary Rick Perry the possibility of importing LNG from the US and Indian investment in the energy sector there.

Pradhan had also discussed with Perry energy cooperation between India and the US, Indian investment in Liquefied natural gas (LNG) and Shale sectors, and the possibility of the US exporting LNG to India from early next year.

Perry had said co-operation between India and the US in the energy sector is in mutual interest as India's energy need is set to see a rapid increase as the economy expands.

"The policy tomorrow will look back and look forward," the official told reporters on the eve of the signing of the clean energy executive order.

"Energy independence is the goal," the official said, adding that the new energy policy is driven by economy.

Trump, the senior administration official said, believes that there are many clean energy policies of the Obama administration that should be reviewed or should be "taken off the books to the extent we can".

The executive order would also provide a framework for Trump administration's strategy on energy such that each department and agency of the government will be responsible for identifying all regulations, all rules that serve as obstacle and impediments to domestic energy.

The executive order among other things will call for a review of the Clean Power Plan, and overturn limits on coal leasing on public lands, methane regulations, and requirements to include climate change as part of environmental assessments, as well as call for a re-examination of the social cost of carbon.

"When it comes to climate change, we want to take our own course and do it in our won fashion," the official said.

"In terms of the Paris Agreement whether we are staying or not is still under discussion. Paris Agreement is still under discussion," he said.

However, it will not address several major environmental rules issued during the Obama administration.

High-fiber diet may check onset of diabetes

IANS | Sydney |

A diet rich in high-fiber foods — such as fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains — encourage the production of short-chain fatty acids that are beneficial for the immune system and may help protect against the onset of Type 1 diabetes, a study shows.

The findings showed that the western diet, which lacks dietary fibre affects human gut microbiota and the production of short-chain fatty acids acetate or butyrate.

The specialised diet uses starches — found in many foods including fruit and vegetables — that resist digestion and pass through to the colon or large bowel where they are broken down by microbiota (gut bacteria).

This process of fermentation produces acetate and butyrate which, when combined, provided complete protection against Type 1 diabetes, the researchers said.

"Our research found that eating a diet which encourages the gut bacteria that produce high levels of acetate or butyrate improves the integrity of the gut lining, which reduces pro-inflammatory factors and promote immune tolerance," said Eliana Marino researcher at Monash University in Australia.

"We found this had an enormous impact on the development of Type 1 diabetes," Marino added.

The study, published in the journal Nature Immunology, highlighted how non-pharmaceutical approaches including special diets and gut bacteria could treat or prevent autoimmune diseases such as Type 1 diabetes.

"The materials we used are something you can digest that is comprised of natural products – resistant starches are a normal part of our diet. The diets we used are highly efficient at releasing beneficial metabolites. I would describe them as an extreme superfood," explained Charles Mackay, Professor at Monash University.

However, the diet was not just about eating vegetables or high-fibre foods but involved special food and a special process and would need to be managed by nutritionists, dietitians and clinicians, Mackay noted.

China pledges $28 m support to Nepal Army

ANN | Kathmandu |

Chinese Defence Minister General Chang Wanquan has pledged a grant assistance of Nepalese rupees 3.04 billion ($28 million) to strengthen the Nepal Army (NA) in disaster management and equip it for the United Nations peacekeeping mission.

During his meeting with Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Thursday, Chang said the Chinese government was ready to support the NA with the equipment equal to the pledged amount.

The commitment from Chang is part of the pledge made by Chinese President Xi Jinping to PM Dahal during their meeting in September last year during the BRICS Outreach Summit in Goa.

Chang arrived in Kathmandu for a three-day visit on Thursday, the first by a Chinese defence minister in 15 years. Defence Minister Bal Krishna Khand said the Chinese side would provide the equipment support based on the demand from NA.

“The two sides will finalise the support after the NA provides the list of military support it needs,” Khand told the Post. The NA which wants to double its presence in the UN peacekeeping mission from around 5,000 at present is struggling to manage equipment. The doubling effort is expected to cost around Rupees 7 billion as the NA has to prepare the troops to deploy them in war-hit countries.

The Rupees 3.04 billion military assistance from the northern neighbour on Thursday comes weeks after China’s pledge during an investment summit early this month to plough $8.3 billion (approximately Rupees 860 billion), equivalent to nearly 40 percent of Nepal’s GDP, into Nepal for infrastructure development.

Khand and Chang, who is leading a 19-member delegation to Nepal, also held discussions on holding military exercises, the first ever by the armies of Nepal and China.

The dates are yet to be announced, but the first of the joint exercises is likely to take place in the third week of April, NA officials said, adding that the drills to be held for two weeks would focus on disaster management.

Chang is scheduled to hold a meeting with Chief of Army Staff Rajendra Chhetri on Friday.

Prince turned down Notorious B.I.G. collaboration

IANS | Los Angeles |

Rapper P Diddy has revealed that late music icon Prince turned down a collaboration with him and late hip-hop star The Notorious B.I.G.

Diddy said that he planned to collaborate with Prince, who passed away in April 2016 from a fentanyl overdose, but he refused their offer as he didn't want to be associated with the hip-hop genre at the time, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

"We met with Prince… but this was during a time when (he) wasn't really rocking with hip-hop and wasn't really clearing any samples, so that really didn't go too well," Diddy said in a video on Instagram.

"But we were always still cool with him and wound up sampling some of his records," he added.

Diddy further said: "He would just go through his phases and he came back to us and just let us know how proud he was of us and the whole thing.

"He was just really protective at one time of just what was going on as far as the whole bitch and hoe controversy. That was a real moment in hip-hop. That was a real reflection point in hip-hop where we were being kind of asked to take responsibility and think about what we were saying."

China building largest nano-research facility

PTI | Beijing |

China is building world's largest multifunctional research platform for nano-technology which would help develop more powerful computers and intelligent robots, official media reported on Tuesday.

The Vacuum Interconnected Nano-X Research Facility in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, integrates the state-of-art capabilities of material growth, device fabrication and testing in one ultra-high vacuum environment, Ding Sunan, deputy director of the project said.

"We are exploring a new technology route of nano-scale devices production on the platform, which simulates the ultra-high vacuum environment of space," Ding, a researcher at the Suzhou Institute of Nano-Tech and Nano-Bionics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences said.

Nano-X has received initial funding of 320 million yuan (about USD 46.5 million) and will eventually have a budget of 1.5 billion yuan, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Construction of the first stage began in 2014 and is expected to be completed in 2018. It comprises 100-metre-long ultra-high vacuum pipelines connecting 30 pieces of equipment.

Ultimately the facility will have ultra-high vacuum pipelines of about 500 metres, connecting more than 100 large pieces of equipment, Ding said.

Nano-X is designed as a complete system for materials growth, device fabrication and testing. All samples can be transferred accurately, quickly and smoothly among all tools in an ultra-high vacuum environment.

The facility can prevent surface contamination from the air, keeping a material's intrinsic properties unchanged and realizing quantum manipulation and control, Ding said.

Experts say it will help make breakthroughs in common and critical problems in materials science and device technology, and develop new manufacturing technologies of nano-materials and core devices in the fields of energy and information.

Nano-X is expected to be incorporated into China's national research infrastructure system, and become a world-class open platform for research and development in nano-science and nano-technology, providing advanced technical support for the national strategy of high technologies, the report said.

Previously a global manufacturing hub, China is currently trying to transform itself into high technology centre to beat its economic slowdown.

China has started the construction of one of largest and most sensitive cosmic-ray facilities in Sichuan province.

Earlier it commissioned the world's biggest telescope in Guizhou Province to search for more strange objects space, gain better understand the origin of the universe and to boost the global hunt for extra-terrestrial life.

Facebook launches Town Hall tool to find nearby lawmakers

IANS | New York |

Facebook has launched a new tool that would make it easier for users to find and "follow" their elected representatives. The tool lists the officials based on users' location and provide a fast access to them.

The new tool, currently available in the US, would help users to contact every official in their vicinity directly as the tool would provide users with the officials' phone number, address or a link to message them on Facebook (presuming the politician is on Facebook).

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said civic-minded features like Town Hall were becoming a bigger focus at his company, technology website CNet reported.

"The more you engage with the political process, the more you can ensure it reflects your values. This is an important part of feeling connected to your community and your democracy, and it's something we're increasingly focused on at Facebook," Zuckerberg wrote in a post.

Town Hall would also include local elected officials for the 150 biggest cities in the US and the company hoped to expand this further.

"In addition to Town Hall, Facebook users that 'Like' or 'Comment' on a post from one of their elected officials from their news feed will see a new feature that invites them to directly contact their representative. Should the user follow through, Facebook will then prompt them to post about contacting that lawmaker," the report said.

The Menlo Park-based social media giant rolled out a similar feature during the US presidential elections last year which helped citizens make a voting plan to use on Election Day.
